“Zircoooooon.”

A hushed voice called out to the orange gem, who was lounging in the pitch darkness with his eyes closed.

“Zircoooooon!”

He gasped, flinching as a pebble ricocheted off his arm. His head whirled around to the giggling offender. “Spinel??”

The pink gem beamed. “Come on, get up!”

“Why??”

“Come look, come look!”

Reluctantly, he swung his feet over the chair. “Come…outside?”

“Yeah!”

“But…but it’s the middle of the night,” Zircon gulped. “Let me at least report our location—”

“There’s no time!” Spinel sprinted from behind the pillar and seized the other gem’s hand. “It’ll be gone before you can get back!”

“But what if the Lunari—guaah!”

Whisked away into the night, Zircon was soon overcome with awe at the hundreds upon hundreds of stars shooting across the blackened sky. Trails of light streaked from horizon to horizon, shining off their glassy strands of hair.

He couldn’t take his eyes off the sight.

“You said you wanted to see it, right?”

After a moment, he looked down at his shorter cohort. The pink gem had told him stories about grand meteor showers in years past, and, though he was afraid of being out at night, especially without notifying the others and without his partner, he had yearned to one day catch this occurrence in the absence of combat.

Spinel beamed at his fellow gem. “I’ve been asking Sensei and the others to help me figure out when this next star shower would be! I’ve been waiting to bring you ever since!”

Zircon couldn’t break his gaze on the older gem, wondering just how long he bided his time for this moment. All just for him. Spinel always had his head in the clouds and acted goofy, so he never expected him to take such a request seriously. They spent a lot of their free time together, sure, but why did Spinel not do this with his own partner instead?

“Do you like it?”

“I…” he turned back to the sky, then smiled. “I love it! It's amazing!”

“I’m glad!”

“Thank you so much!”

“Of course!”

Their hands squeezed a little tighter as the shimmering stars blazed overhead.

Until the call of a cross Bort interrupted the moment.
