Work Text

Nestled in a lush valley surrounded by mist-capped mountains, the kingdom of Johwa was a breathtaking land where beauty seemed to defy time. Rivers flowed gracefully through the land, nurturing the verdant fields that spread out like an artist's canvas. In the heart of the kingdom lay its capital, a city built on ancient stones that echoed with stories of kings and queens who had walked its cobblestone streets. The people were known for their artistry, crafting intricate tapestries and delicate ceramics that were sought after across the world. The culture of the rich land celebrated harmony in all aspects of life. Festivals throughout the year honored the changing seasons, each one bringing the people together in joy and unity. Music and dance were cherished pastimes, and the court often echoed with the soft strains of traditional instruments. Though the kingdom had seen its share of challenges, its people were resilient, drawing strength from their shared history. Park Jihoon, the crown prince and the future king, was a commanding presence with a warrior's heart. His tall and striking frame was matched only by his formidable skill on the battlefield. Jihoon's reputation as a brave and strategic leader was well-deserved; he had led the kingdom through many skirmishes with rival lands and emerged victorious each time. His people admired him for his courage and fairness, for he never waged war without just cause. Park Hyunsuk, the king’s mate and the future queen, was Jihoon's perfect complement. He was smaller in stature, but his quick wit and smart strategies was marveling. Hyunsuk's intelligence was renowned throughout the kingdom, and his ability to navigate political complexities had been crucial in keeping the kingdom strong and united. The people adored him for his charm and benevolence, traits that endeared him to all. The love story of Jihoon and Hyunsuk was one for the ages, rooted in mutual respect and deep affection. Their first meeting had been under a cherry blossom tree, a chance encounter that neither would ever forget. Jihoon's regal bearing and kind eyes had drawn Hyunsuk in, while Hyunsuk's soft smile and sharp mind had captivated Jihoon. Their relationship blossomed as they worked together for the good of the kingdom. Jihoon's prowess on the battlefield was complemented by Hyunsuk's shrewd diplomacy, and they became an unstoppable force. Yet, despite their strength, they always found time for each other, cherishing the moments they could steal away from their duties. Their bond was a beacon of hope for their people, and under their joint leadership, Johwa thrived like never before. The kingdom flourished, its lands teeming with life and its people living in harmony, its rulers leading with strength, wisdom, and unwavering love. Not everything goes smoothly without an interruption in life and definitely not for a big and flourishing kingdom. The time of war began to befall everywhere. And the land of Johwa was no exception. As dawn broke over the kingdom of Johwa, a sense of anticipation hung in the air. Soldiers, clad in gleaming armor, assembled in neat ranks in the palace courtyard. Their banners, bearing the crest of Johwa, fluttered in the morning breeze. Jihoon, the future king, stood at the forefront, his countenance resolute and his sword sheathed at his side. The clattering of hooves and the clinking of weapons echoed through the still morning air, mingling with the hushed voices of well-wishers who had come to see off their beloved king. Park Hyunsuk, his beloved and future queen, watched from the palace steps, his eyes filled with both pride and concern. His soft hands rested protectively on his abdomen, where the first stirrings of new life had begun. Though he trusted in Jihoon's strength, the thought of his departure for war weighed heavy on Hyunsuk's heart. Jihoon approached Hyunsuk, his armor catching the morning sun's glow. He reached out and delicately cupped Hyunsuk's cheek, his touch gentle and reverent. "My beloved, you bear the burdens of our child and our kingdom," Jihoon said, his tone resolute. "Rest assured, I shall keep my vow to return to your side. I will be with you when our child is born, my queen." Hyunsuk met his gaze, his expression soft but unwavering. "Your Highness, my heart is with you always; your bravery on the battlefield inspires us all, and I am confident you shall lead our soldiers to victory," he responded. "Hold onto the love we share and the child who eagerly awaits your return, my king."

Jihoon leaned in and kissed Hyunsuk tenderly, his lips conveying the depth of his affection and the strength of his vow. "I swear to you, Hyunsuk, I shall come back to you, and together, we will welcome our child into this world," Jihoon said with quiet intensity. The entire kingdom had gathered to witness the departure of their king and warriors. As Jihoon turned to address them, his voice rang out, commanding and inspiring. "People of Johwa! We embark on this journey with honor and resolve. Together, we shall face our enemies with courage and protect our land and our loved ones. Stand firm in your faith, for we shall prevail and return with victory!" The crowd, deeply moved, bowed in unison. "Long live our future king and queen! Victory to Johwa!" they cried, their voices echoing through the courtyard. Jihoon nodded, acknowledging their support. He gave a reassuring smile to Hyunsuk, then mounted his steed and raised his sword high. "To battle!" he shouted, and with a powerful cry, the soldiers rallied behind him on their horses. The sound of hooves thundered as they departed, heading toward the horizon and the challenges that lay ahead. As the sound of the army's departure faded into the distance, the people of Johwa turned their eyes to Hyunsuk, offering him their support and well-wishes. He accepted their kindness with gratitude, knowing that he must remain strong for the kingdom and for the life growing within him. Hyunsuk watched them go, his heart filled with hope and a silent prayer for their safe return. Though the journey ahead was fraught with danger, his faith in Jihoon and their love remained unshaken.

A month had passed since the brave warriors had set forth to defend the kingdom against its adversaries. Hyunsuk's pregnancy progressed, and though he was only one month along, the weight of his duties as a ruler and an expectant parent rested heavily upon him. Yet, he carried himself with grace, his will strong and unwavering. His younger cousin, Prince Jaehyuk, walked by his side, lending his quiet support. "Jaehyuk-ah," Hyunsuk spoke as they made their way to the grand chamber, "the matters of the kingdom weigh heavily upon my mind today. I trust you shall remain at my side during this session?" Jaehyuk, with his golden hair catching the light of the palace torches, nodded earnestly. "Of course, Your Grace. I am ever at your service and shall be your ally in all matters." Hyunsuk offered a gentle smile, a rare sight in these troubled times. "Your presence brings me comfort, Jaehyuk-ah. Let us proceed with wisdom and unity for today." They entered the grand chamber, where members of the court had already gathered. The room was adorned with tapestries depicting the storied history of Johwa. As Hyunsuk took his seat, the court fell into respectful silence. "Esteemed council," Hyunsuk began, his voice clear and commanding, "we gather today to deliberate on the ongoing war that our kingdom faces. Let us proceed with our reports and updates. Lord Sung, speak on the state of our resources." Lord Sung, the chief royal advisor, stepped forward, bowing respectfully. "Your Highness, our stores are sufficient for now, but we must take care in our usage, for the war may yet be long and arduous. Our supply lines remain steady, but we face increasing pressure from our enemies." Hyunsuk nodded thoughtfully. "We shall heed your counsel and act with caution. What of our warriors? Have there been any reports from the frontlines?" As if on cue, a messenger entered the chamber, bowing deeply before Hyunsuk. "Your Grace, I bring news from the battlefield," he announced. "The war is cruel, as you have foreseen. Our warriors have faced fierce resistance from the enemy, yet they remain steadfast. King Jihoon leads them with unmatched valor, his sword striking fear into the hearts of our foes." Hyunsuk's expression remained stoic, though his heart quickened at the mention of Jihoon's name. "What else can you share with us, good messenger?" The messenger cleared his throat. "Your Highness, King Jihoon bade me deliver a personal message unto you." He took a breath, then recited Jihoon's words. "'My beloved Hyunsuk, the trials of war test us all, yet my resolve to return to you and our child remains unbroken. Your love and courage fuel my spirit in battle. Hold fast to hope, for I shall soon be by your side.'" Hyunsuk's expression softened, his love for Jihoon evident in his eyes. "I thank you for bearing this message. My heart rejoices to know that our king remains strong and resolute." The court murmured their approval, reassured by Jihoon's steadfastness and Hyunsuk's leadership. "Good messenger," Hyunsuk continued, "return to our warriors with our kingdom's prayers and blessings. Tell them their bravery and sacrifices shall not be in vain. Let them know their queen and all Johwa stand behind them." The messenger bowed deeply. "It shall be as you command, Your Grace." With that, he departed the chamber. Hyunsuk turned to the court. "Let us remain vigilant in our duties and steadfast in our faith. Together, we shall guide Johwa through these trials and emerge stronger than ever." The court responded with a chorus of affirmations, pledging their loyalty and support. Hyunsuk exchanged a knowing glance with Jaehyuk, his trusted companion. They knew the road ahead would be fraught with challenges, but their hope and determination would see them through.  On the battlefield, the clash of swords and the thunder of hooves had filled the air. King Jihoon and his warriors had faced the enemy with unmatched valor, but their resources were dwindling, and their strength waning. On this fateful day, a sudden and fierce onslaught caught them off guard, leaving the chivalry slain and many warriors gravely wounded. Jihoon, bloodied but unyielding, rallied his men with a voice that echoed across the battlefield. "Stand fast, my brothers! We must not falter now! The fate of Johwa rests upon our shoulders!" His younger brother, Park Jeongwoo, the first in command and the next in line, fought at his side, his strong frame moving with grace and determination. But as the enemy pressed harder, Jihoon knew they needed reinforcements to turn the tide of battle. "Jeongwoo-yah," Jihoon called out, his voice carrying over the chaos, "you must return to the kingdom and seek backup. We cannot hold out much longer without aid." Jeongwoo refused, shaking his head adamantly. "Hyung, I cannot leave you in this dire hour! We must fight together or perish together!" Jihoon's gaze was fierce, yet his tone held a note of desperation. "Park Jeongwoo, you are my last hope for our kingdom! I command you to go—now! Save yourself and bring us the help we need!" Jeongwoo's heart was torn, but he could not defy his brother's command. He bowed his head in respect. "As you wish, Your highness. I shall return with reinforcements. May the gods watch over you." With a heavy heart, Jeongwoo turned and rode away from the battlefield, his mind focused on his duty despite the pain of leaving his brother behind. The journey was long and arduous, his body and spirit pushed to their limits. Meanwhile, at the palace, Hyunsuk anxiously awaited news from the frontlines. He paced the grand hall, his thoughts consumed by worry for Jihoon and the warriors. Prince Jaehyuk remained by his side, offering support in these troubled times. "Hyunsuk Hyung," Jaehyuk said, trying to console him, "you must stay strong. Our kingdom needs your leadership now more than ever." Hyunsuk nodded, though his heart ached. "I fear for Jihoon, Jaehyuk-ah. The silence from the battlefield is like a dagger to my soul. We must prepare for any news, good or ill." Just then, the castle gates swung open, and a battered and wounded Jeongwoo stumbled in. His appearance was a shocking sight—his armor battered, his face bloodied. He staggered toward Hyunsuk and Jaehyuk, his strength nearly spent. "Jeongwoo-yah!" Hyunsuk cried, rushing to his side. "What has befallen you? Where is Jihoon?" Jeongwoo could barely speak, his breath labored and his voice weak. "Your Grace...the king…hyung... he remains on the battlefield... fighting valiantly... but we are in dire need of reinforcements..." Hyunsuk's heart sank, his fears realized. "Jeongwoo-yah, you must rest now. We will tend to your wounds. The kingdom shall rally to Jihoon's side and bring him the aid he needs." But before Jeongwoo could reply, he collapsed into Jaehyuk's arms, unconscious from exhaustion and his wounds. The prince held him gently, and Hyunsuk's eyes were filled with tears of sorrow, and fear for Jihoon's fate. "Guards, summon the healers quickly," Hyunsuk commanded, his voice steady despite his anguish. "We must act swiftly. Let us call upon the kingdom knights to aid the king and his warriors at once." As Jeongwoo was carried away to receive care with Jaehyuk accompanying, Hyunsuk steeled themselves for the days ahead. The path to victory now seemed more daunting, but Hyunsuk's resolve stood unshaken. With the kingdom's support, he would strive to fulfill Jihoon's wish and bring their warriors the help they so desperately needed.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

In the quiet of the healing chambers, Prince Jaehyuk knelt beside the cot where Park Jeongwoo lay, his bare chest bandaged to tend to his wounds. The flickering torch light cast shadows across Jeongwoo's face, revealing the depths of his pain and weariness. Jaehyuk tried his best to conceal his worry, focusing on his duty as he applied salves and bandages with gentle hands.

Jeongwoo winced slightly as Jaehyuk's fingers worked over his injuries, yet he stared at the young prince with an intensity that spoke of unvoiced emotions. Jaehyuk's heart raced under Jeongwoo's gaze, but he forced himself to remain composed, his hands steady despite his inner turmoil.

"Your wounds are deep, Jeongwoo-shi," Jaehyuk spoke, his voice soft but full of concern. "You must rest now and allow your body to heal."

Jeongwoo nodded slowly, his breath shallow. "I thank you, Jaehyuk-nim, for your kindness. Your care soothes my pain, though my spirit longs to be at the king’s side."

Jaehyuk looked away for a moment, trying to steady himself. He had met Jeongwoo only during formal occasions, and though their encounters had been brief, an unspoken connection had always existed between them. Yet neither had ever dared to voice their feelings.

"You must not rush back to the battlefield," Jaehyuk implored, his voice tinged with worry. "Your wounds need time to heal. Think of your safety. And you can address me as Jaehyuk, Prince Jeongwoo"

“You can call Jeongwoo, Jaehyuk-ah” Jeongwoo reached out and grasped Jaehyuk's hand, his grip firm despite his weakened state. "I cannot linger here, Jaehyuk-ah. My hyung needs me now more than ever. I must return to him with reinforcements, no matter the cost."

Jaehyuk's eyes widened, and his heart ached at Jeongwoo's determination. "But you are gravely injured, your highness. Must you truly go?"

Jeongwoo's gaze was steady, his eyes locked with Jaehyuk's. "I must, Jaehyuk-ah. For my brother and for our kingdom. My duty calls me, and I shall answer it."

Jaehyuk's emotions swirled within him, torn between the need to protect Jeongwoo and the understanding of his duty. He nodded slowly, his expression somber. "Then may the gods watch over you and guide your path, Jeongwoo-yah. May you find victory and safety on the battlefield."

Jeongwoo released Jaehyuk's hand, a faint smile touching his lips. "And may you find strength and courage here in the palace, Jaehyuk-ah. I leave our kingdom and the queen in capable hands."

As Jaehyuk stood to leave, he glanced back at Jeongwoo one last time, their eyes meeting with unspoken words hanging between them. Then he turned and walked away, his mind heavy with thoughts of what might have been.

Elsewhere, King Jihoon lay half-conscious, his body fully wounded and his strength waning. In a desperate moment, he stumbled toward a waterfall, his vision blurring. His last breath carried one word: "Hyunsuk." With that, he fell into the rushing waters, his fate unknown.

At the same moment, back in the palace, Hyunsuk felt a sudden, sharp pain in his heart. He clutched his chest, a sense of dread washing over him. Though he did not know why, he could not shake the feeling that something terrible had befallen Jihoon.

Hyunsuk's fears for his beloved's safety intensified, but he steeled himself, knowing he must remain strong for the sake of his people. His resolve grew firmer, even as his heart cried out for Jihoon's return.

In the dead of night, as the kingdom of Johwa lay under the serene blanket of the stars, preparations were underway for reinforcement. The castle's armory bustled with activity as soldiers hastened to arm themselves, the soft clinks of metal and the quiet murmur of voices echoing through the stone corridors.

The moonlight cast a gentle glow on their determined faces, reflecting the unwavering resolve of those about to embark on their solemn duty. The palace was shrouded in a quiet yet solemn atmosphere, the gravity of the situation apparent to all. Jeongwoo, his wounds freshly bandaged, prepared to lead the reinforcements back to the battlefield, his heart heavy with concern for his brother Jihoon.

Courtesans and the queen were gathered to bid Jeongwoo farewell, their expressions solemn as they offered their blessings for his safe journey. Hyunsuk, though carrying the weight of his own worries, composed himself to speak with Jeongwoo before his departure.

"My brave brother-in-law," Hyunsuk began, his voice steady, "you undertake this journey with great bravery and resolve. Know that the entire kingdom stands with you, and my prayers accompany you."

Jeongwoo bowed his head in gratitude. "I thank you, my Queen. It is my honor to serve the kingdom and my brother in this way, Your highness."

"Jeongwoo-yah, take these words to Jihoon," Hyunsuk said, his voice gentle yet firm. "Tell him our child and I wait eagerly for his return. His courage is the lifeblood of Johwa, and his presence shall bring us victory."

Jeongwoo placed his hand over his heart and bowed deeply to Hyunsuk. "I shall deliver your words, Your Highness. Fear not, for the king is a warrior of unparalleled strength. He shall fulfill his vow to you."

As Jeongwoo prepared to depart, his gaze met Jaehyuk’s across the courtyard. There was an unspoken farewell in their exchange, the silent promise of a return reflected in their locked eyes. Jaehyuk’s heart ached at the thought of Jeongwoo leaving once more, yet he kept his emotions in check.

Jeongwoo mounted his steed and gave one last nod to Jaehyuk, sealing their unspoken agreement. Then he led the army out of the palace gates, his troops following in a solemn procession.

Jaehyuk watched until the last of the army had vanished into the night. He stood there for a moment, lost in thought, before turning to join Hyunsuk. He found the future queen in his private quarters, pacing back and forth, a troubled expression on his face.

"Jaehyuk," Hyunsuk said, pausing his pacing as Jaehyuk entered the room, "I cannot shake this commotion in my heart. The dread I feel weighs heavily upon me. Something has befallen Jihoon, I fear it."

Jaehyuk approached Hyunsuk, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Hyunsuk Hyung, I know your worry is deep, but you must trust in Jihoon's strength and his promises. He is a man of his word and will return to you and your child as he vowed."

Hyunsuk nodded, taking some comfort in Jaehyuk's words, but his fear for Jihoon's fate remained. "I shall hold onto hope, Jaehyuk, but my heart cannot help but yearn for his safe return."

Jaehyuk squeezed Hyunsuk's shoulder gently. "Let us trust in Jeongwoo to bring our warriors home and to find Jihoon. We must remain strong here for our people and for Jihoon's sake."

Meanwhile, at the battlefield, the warriors who had been unconscious began to regain their senses. As they came to, they discovered Jihoon was missing. Panic and concern spread through their ranks, for their king was nowhere to be found.

The search for Jihoon commenced, the warriors scouring the area with urgency. Their loyalty to their king and love for their homeland drove them on, determined to find Jihoon and bring him back safely. The fate of Johwa hung in the balance, but the warriors would not rest until their king was found and their leader restored.

Park Jeongwoo returned to the battlefield with haste, his heart pounding with urgency and concern for his brother and their fellow warriors. As he approached the encampment, he was met with a sight that made his blood run cold—wounded soldiers, their faces stricken with fear, bowed their heads as he passed.

Jeongwoo, filled with confusion and dread, halted in his tracks. "Soldiers of Johwa, what troubles you? Why do you bow your heads in such sorrow?" he called out, his voice carrying over the camp.

The soldiers exchanged glances, their expressions heavy with anxiety. General Myung, a seasoned leader known for his valor and loyalty, stepped forward. His head remained bowed, a sense of shame weighing heavily upon him.

"My lord Jeongwoo," General Myung spoke, his voice tinged with sorrow, "I bring grave news. Our king, Jihoon, is missing. We do not know his fate. The battlefield yielded fierce combat, and though we fought valiantly, we have been left with no sign of our king."

Jeongwoo stumbled back, his face filled with shock and disbelief. "What do you mean the king is missing?" he screamed in pain, his voice echoing across the camp. "Have you searched every corner of the battlefield?"

General Myung nodded gravely. "We have scoured the land, my lord. But there is no trace of the king. We shall continue our search, but the darkness of night makes our efforts difficult."

Jeongwoo fell to his knees, the weight of the news crashing over him like a tempest. "This cannot be..." he murmured, his heart heavy with fear and sorrow. "Hyung must be found!"

The soldiers gathered around him, their faces filled with sorrow. General Myung tried to offer words of reassurance, though his own despair was clear. "Your Highness, we will not give up the search. We will find our king and bring him back safely. He is a warrior of unparalleled strength—he must still live."

Jeongwoo looked up at General Myung, his eyes filled with a mix of pain and determination. "Do all you can to find him, General," he said, his voice strained. "We cannot lose him—not now, not ever."

General Myung nodded solemnly. "It shall be done, Your Highness. We shall scour every inch of this land to find our king."

As Jeongwoo struggled with the revelation, back in the palace, a different battle was taking place. Hyunsuk, feeling a deep connection to Jihoon, suddenly fell gravely ill. His temperature spiked, his face pale, and his body weak. The suddenness of his sickness alarmed the palace, and prince Jaehyuk and courtesans rushed to his side.

Jaehyuk, knowing Hyunsuk's condition was severe, remained at his side, tending to him with great care. He brought cool clothes to Hyunsuk's forehead and prayed for relief. "Hyunsuk hyung, you must stay strong, for the kingdom, for you, for the king, and importantly for the poor child in you" Jaehyuk urged, his voice filled with concern. "Your body must heal. The king would wish for you to endure."

Hyunsuk's breaths were labored, and he could barely speak. "I feel him, Jaehyuk-ah," Hyunsuk whispered, his voice weak. "I fear for him, as if his fate were entwined with mine. He is in peril, I know it in my soul."

Jaehyuk's heart ached at Hyunsuk's words, but he remained resolute. "You must hold on, my queen. We must have faith that Jihoon will be found and returned safely to us. The gods will guide us through these trials."

And Jaehyuk continued to care for Hyunsuk, he sent urgent messages to the court, requesting healers and all necessary aid. Though fear gripped his heart, he refused to give in to despair. He would do everything in his power to support Hyunsuk and their kingdom during this dark time. As Jeongwoo and the soldiers scoured the battlefield for Jihoon, and as Jaehyuk cared for Hyunsuk, the fate of the kingdom hung in the balance.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The sun rose on the palace with a subdued glow, casting a shadow over the land of Johwa as news of King Jihoon's fate remained unknown. In the palace, under Jaehyuk's attentive care, Hyunsuk had regained some strength. However, his mind was still consumed by anxiety for Jihoon and the well-being of the kingdom.

Feeling a pressing need to take action, Hyunsuk called for an urgent royal meeting in the secret court. Jaehyuk stood by his side, offering his insight and support as they made their way to the chamber. The court members, maidens, and knights gathered, their faces etched with concern. Hyunsuk's expression was grave, his eyes haunted by fear and uncertainty.

Just as the meeting was about to begin, the sound of hooves and the commotion of soldiers filled the air. Jeongwoo returned to the palace, leading the remaining army back from the battlefield. But his expression was one of sorrow and fear, and the army he led was smaller than it had been when he first left.

Hyunsuk's heart raced as he watched Jeongwoo enter the chamber. His eyes searched for Jihoon, but he did not find his beloved king among the returning soldiers. His voice quivered as he spoke. "Prince Jeongwoo, where is the king? Where’s my husband? W–where’s Jihoon?”

Jeongwoo's expression was sorrowful, fear etched into his features. The soldiers behind him bore similar expressions, and their demeanor was subdued. All present understood immediately what this meant—King Jihoon was not among them.

Hyunsuk's face paled as he saw Jeongwoo's empty hands, his heart sinking with dread. "He isn't here, is he?" Hyunsuk asked, his voice trembling with fear.

Jeongwoo's face contorted with guilt and anguish. He rushed forward, falling to his knees at Hyunsuk's feet and holding them tightly. "Your highness, I beg your forgiveness," he sobbed, tears streaming down his face. "We searched for the king with all our might, but we could not find him. He is missing, and we fear the worst."

Hyunsuk's face paled, his body trembling as he heard Jeongwoo's words. His heart shattered at the realization that Jihoon might never return. A wail of grief escaped his lips as he collapsed to his knees, tears flowing freely.

Hyunsuk's anguish was palpable as he watched Jeongwoo weep at his feet. "No, this cannot be..." he wailed, his tears mingling with pain. "H-He promised to return, to our kingdom, to our people, to our child, t–to m-me. He cannot be gone. No"

The court, maidens, and knights looked on with heads bowed, their own hearts heavy with pain and fear. The air was thick with unspoken sorrow, as if the very walls of the grand hall absorbed the collective anguish of those within.

They watched as the queen shed tears, their deep grief echoing through the chamber.

Jeongwoo bowed deeply, in tears and fear. The guilt of being not able to bring back his brother had consumed him completely. "Forgive me, my queen," Jeongwoo pleaded, his voice choking with emotion. "I failed him, I failed you, I failed the people, I failed the u–unborn...I beg for forgiveness."

The weight of the moment was too much for Hyunsuk to bear.  Hyunsuk could not find the words to respond, his grief overwhelming him. His body trembled in fear, the pain of loss almost too much to bear. Exhaustion and sorrow overcame him, and he fainted, his body going limp. Jeongwoo and Jaehyuk swiftly caught him, preventing him from falling to the ground.

Jaehyuk watched the scene unfold, his own heart heavy with sorrow. "Hyung, you must hold on, there is a tender life inside you" he said gently, trying to offer support. "And we must not lose hope."

But Hyunsuk's exhaustion and anguish were too much for him to bear. His body weakened, and he had lost consciousness. "Hyunsuk hyung!" Jaehyuk exclaimed, his voice filled with worry as he and Jeongwoo gently laid Hyunsuk down. "Quickly, fetch the healers!" Jaehyuk commanded, his mind racing with concern for Hyunsuk's well-being.

The healers rushed to Hyunsuk's side, tending to him with urgency as the court looked on in silence. Jeongwoo remained on his knees, his face buried in his hands, overcome with guilt and despair.

The fate of the kingdom and their beloved king now hung in the balance. The court could do nothing but hope for Hyunsuk's recovery and pray that Jihoon would somehow be found and returned safely to them.

In the calm and beautiful countryside of Johwa, life continued as it had always been unaware of the war cries of the battle, with the lush fields and gentle rivers painting a serene landscape. It was on the banks of one such river, near a tranquil waterfall, that a local farmer named Kim Junkyu made a startling discovery. Junkyu, a tall and handsome man with a strong frame, was tending to his fields when he noticed a figure lying by the water's edge.

Junkyu rushed to the injured man's side, his heart quickening at the sight of the unconscious man. The man's clothes were soaked through, his face and body bloodied and pale from the cold water. Junkyu knew he needed to act quickly to save the stranger's life.

"Oh my, he is grievously wounded," Junkyu muttered to himself, his voice filled with urgency. "I must get him to safety."

With great care, Junkyu lifted the unconscious man onto his shoulders and carried him back to his cottage farm. Upon entering his home, he called out to his husband, Mashiho.

"Mashiho, my love!" Junkyu exclaimed, his voice echoing through the cottage. "We have a wounded man in need of our help."

Mashiho, a short and pretty tailor with gentle features, hurried out from the back room, his expression one of concern. "Oh dear, who is this man?" Mashiho asked as he approached the injured man and his husband.

"I found him by the waterfall, nearly lifeless," Junkyu replied, laying the man down on the hearth. "We must tend to him at once. He needs immediate care."

Mashiho nodded, his eyes focused on the man's injuries. "Let me fetch warm blankets and prepare some healing salves." He quickly moved to gather what was needed, returning with soft blankets and herbal remedies.

Together, the couple carefully wrapped the injured man in blankets, and Mashiho applied the healing salves to his wounds. "We must do all we can to bring him back to health," Mashiho said as he worked.

As they tended to the injured man whose his body utterly injured with cuts and face completely bloodied, Junkyu noticed the man's appearance and aura, even in his unconscious state. "Darling, there is something about this man... I believe he may not be one of us."

Mashiho paused, considering Junkyu's words. "You may be right, dear. We must take great care with him and keep his presence here discreet. We cannot know what dangers may follow him."

Junkyu nodded in agreement. "Yes love, let us offer him our home and our help, and keep his identity safe."

Back in the castle, Hyunsuk's restlessness only grew. Though the royal healers tended to him with the utmost care, his anxiety for Jihoon's safety made it difficult for him to find peace. He tossed and turned, his mind filled with dread and uncertainty.

"Your Highness, you must rest," one of the healers implored, placing a cool cloth on Hyunsuk's forehead. "Your recovery is crucial, not just for yourself but for the unborn in you."

Hyunsuk nodded, though his thoughts were far from rest. "I cannot shake the feeling that something terrible has befallen my beloved," he whispered, his voice laced with worry. "I must know what has become of him."

The healers exchanged concerned glances, their loyalty to Hyunsuk evident. "We shall continue to care for you, Your Highness," one said, "and do all we can to bring news of King Jihoon. You must hold on to hope and trust in his strength."

Though their words offered little peace, Hyunsuk knew he had no choice but to endure for his king and child. He closed his eyes, hoping for Jihoon's safe return and trying to find some semblance of calm.

As the night deepened, Junkyu and Mashiho continued to care for the injured man, unaware that they were nursing King Jihoon himself back to health and the royal healers worked hard for the queen and the child.
Their kindness and care would soon prove to be a lifeline for the wounded king and restless queen.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

As night fell over the kingdom of Johwa, the sky wept with heavy rains, the dark clouds mourning the separation of Hyunsuk and Jihoon. Inside the palace, Hyunsuk lay in his chamber, his sleep troubled and filled with dreams of Jihoon. The healers had given him a sedative to help ease his pain and exhaustion, but the aching emptiness in his heart could not be so easily soothed. His body needed rest, but his mind was far from at peace.  Dreams of Jihoon haunted his slumber, and every moment without his beloved felt like an eternity. Jaehyuk, who had been by Hyunsuk's side as much as he could, eventually left the chamber and wandered into the castle gardens. He needed space to think, to process the events that had transpired. As he walked among the flowers, he found himself overcome with emotion. Tears streamed down his face, mingling with the raindrops that had begun to fall from the sky. Lost in thought and sorrow, Jaehyuk didn't hear Jeongwoo approach him. It was only when he felt a gentle touch on his shoulder that he turned to see Jeongwoo, his expression one of pain and understanding. They shared a moment of silent recognition, their grief unspoken yet understood. Jaehyuk's voice trembled as he spoke, "Jeongwoo, I cannot believe what has happened. I fear for Hyunsuk and for Jihoon... this separation is a cruel torment." Jeongwoo nodded, his own heart heavy with guilt and fear. "I too cannot comprehend it, Jaehyuk-ah. I have failed my brother, my king and the queen. My heart aches for them." In that moment, the two young men embraced, seeking comfort and solace in each other's arms. Their shared sorrow brought them closer, a bond of understanding forming between them. "We must stay strong," Jeongwoo murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "For their sake, for the kingdom's." Jaehyuk nodded, wiping away his tears. "You are right, prince. We must remain hopeful, though it is difficult. Let us hold on to the belief that the king will return to us." Time seemed to fade away as their eyes locked, the sky began to mourn with them, heavy rains pouring down as if to express the world's grief at the separation of Hyunsuk and Jihoon.  In the countryside, the rain fell softly upon the cottage farm where Junkyu and Mashiho tended to the injured man they had found. Despite their doubts about the man's identity, they chose to help him without question. His injuries were severe, and though they tried their best to care for him, his condition remained unchanged. Mashiho carefully wiped the man's brow with a cool cloth, his face filled with scratches and wounds. "Love, I fear for this man's life," he said, his voice soft but full of concern. "He has yet to regain consciousness." Junkyu, standing by Mashiho's side, hugging him and nodded solemnly. "We must keep faith, my love. Though we may not know who he is, he is in our care now. We must do all we can to nurse him back to health." Mashiho placed his hand on Junkyu's arm, offering a small smile of gratitude. "You are right, dear. We must remain hopeful, just as the rains will pass, so too may his wounds heal." Junkyu returned Mashiho's smile, and they both continued their efforts to care for the injured man. Though the rain fell steadily outside, they worked diligently, their hearts full of kindness and determination. Unbeknownst to them, they were caring for King Jihoon, the very man the kingdom mourned in his absence. Their selfless acts of compassion would prove to be a lifeline for Jihoon, even as Hyunsuk and those in the castle prayed for his safe return. In the palace and the countryside, the night passed slowly, the heavy rain a constant reminder of the sorrow that gripped the kingdom who were unaware of the darkness on them. The palace dwellers who loved Jihoon and Hyunsuk with their everything held onto hope, praying for the day their reunion would bring an end to the pain and uncertainty.  Hyunsuk finally awakened in his chamber, though his return to consciousness did not bring the relief his loved ones had hoped for. Instead, he seemed disoriented, unable to come to terms with the reality of Jihoon's absence. His eyes, once full of life and warmth, now carried a haunting emptiness, reflecting his struggle to process the situation. The palace healers, deeply concerned for Hyunsuk's state, gathered around him with gentle care. His stress and despair worried them greatly, especially for the sake of the unborn child Hyunsuk carried. "Your Highness, you must calm yourself," the royal healer urged, her voice soothing but with an undertone of urgency. "The child depends on your strength and well-being. Please, allow us to help you." But Hyunsuk seemed distant, barely acknowledging their presence. "Jihoon must return... he promised me," he whispered, his eyes gazing out the window as if searching for a sign. Jaehyuk stepped forward, his heart aching at the sight of Hyunsuk's anguish. "Hyunsuk hyung," he began, his voice gentle yet firm. "We are doing all we can to find the king. You must rest and trust that he will return." Hyunsuk shook his head slowly, his expression troubled. "He must be lost... or worse, Jaehyuk-ah" he murmured, his voice barely audible. "How can I rest when he is out there, alone?" The maidens, seeing Hyunsuk's distress, tried to offer comfort as well. "Your Highness," one spoke softly, "please, let us ease your burdens. The king would want you to be strong." Despite their words, Hyunsuk remained unresponsive to their pleas. The heaviness in his heart seemed to consume him, his mind clouded by fear and despair. Meanwhile, outside the castle walls, armies and spies were mobilized in great numbers. Under strict orders to keep their movements secret, they fanned out across the kingdom to search for the missing king. Careful to avoid alerting other kingdoms to the situation, they moved with stealth and precision. The search parties traversed the land, combing every possible area where Jihoon might be found. Rivers, forests, and mountains were scoured for any trace of the king, their efforts driven by loyalty and hope. Back in the palace, Hyunsuk's health continued to worry the healers. They feared the impact of his stress on the unborn child, their expressions tense as they monitored him closely. "His state grows more concerning by the hour," one healer whispered to another, their voices laced with anxiety. "We must find a way to ease his pain, or it may take a terrible toll on both him and the child." Jaehyuk, overhearing their conversation, nodded gravely. He knew the importance of Hyunsuk's well-being, and he vowed to stay by his cousin's side, providing him with everything he could. They continued their efforts to console Hyunsuk, hoping their love and care would eventually break through the darkness that enveloped him. Meanwhile, the search for Jihoon intensified, the kingdom holding its breath as they awaited news of their missing king.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

In the calm countryside, Jihoon slowly began to recover under the devoted care of husbands Junkyu and Mashiho. The couple watched over him attentively, ensuring he was kept warm and protected in their cozy cottage. Though he had not yet regained full strength, Jihoon's wounds had begun to heal, and his breathing was steadier. One morning, as the rain let up and the sun began to shine through the windows, Jihoon finally opened his eyes, blinking at the unfamiliar surroundings. Junkyu and Mashiho, who had been keeping watch nearby, noticed immediately and hurried to his side. "Hyung-nim," Mashiho said, his voice gentle and soothing, "you have awoken. How do you feel? Can you speak to us?" Jihoon blinked slowly, his eyes darting around the room as he tried to grasp his situation. His body was weak, and though he tried to form words, his voice was barely a whisper. "I...?" he managed to utter. Junkyu offered Jihoon a warm smile, trying to ease his confusion. "You are safe in our home, Hyung-nim," he said, his tone kind and reassuring. "You were found by the waterfall, injured and in need of care. We brought you here to help you heal."  Jihoon looked at them both, his expression one of confusion and uncertainty. He seemed to struggle to recall any details of his past, his mind clouded by pain and exhaustion. Mashiho noticed the distress in Jihoon's eyes and tried to reassure him. "You need not worry," he said, his voice soothing. "You are in good hands. Rest and recover. We shall give you time to heal." Junkyu nodded in agreement, placing a comforting hand on Jihoon's shoulder. "Indeed, there is no rush," he said, trying to put the man at ease. "In time, you may share with us who you are and what happened. For now, your well-being is our priority." Though the couple offered Jihoon food and fresh clothes, he showed little reaction, his focus still on trying to understand his situation. He took small sips of water and nibbles of food, but his appetite remained diminished. Mashiho, noticing Jihoon's lack of response, spoke to Junkyu in a hushed tone. "His silence worries me, love," he admitted, his brow furrowed with concern. "The poor man seems lost, unable to recall who he is or what has happened." Junkyu nodded, sharing his husband's concern. "It may take time for him to regain his memories and his strength," he said, his expression thoughtful. "We must remain patient and provide him with as much support as we can, love." Jihoon continued to stay silent, his eyes distant and his body still weak. Though he was grateful for the care he received, he seemed disconnected from the world around him, struggling to find his bearings. Junkyu and Mashiho exchanged a glance, their hearts heavy with worry for the injured man in their care. Though they did not know his true identity, their kindness and compassion would continue to be his refuge as he slowly regained his strength.  A week had passed, and though Hyunsuk’s heart still pained for Jihoon, he found the strength within himself to return to his duties as queen. For the sake of his child and his kingdom, Hyunsuk resumed his responsibilities, though his thoughts often drifted to his beloved. The palace was abuzz with activity as the search for the king continued, but the returning spies and knights brought no news of his whereabouts. The failure weighed heavily on the hearts of all the royals, but none more so than the queen, who tried to hide his despair beneath a stoic façade. A royal court session was convened, with Hyunsuk leading it. The chamber was filled with advisors, nobles, and trusted allies, their expressions a mix of concern and uncertainty. Hyunsuk took his seat at the head of the chamber, Jaehyuk and Jeongwoo close by, their presence a comfort to him. The royal advisors began to discuss matters of state lethargically, as though the absence of King Jihoon was of little consequence. Hyunsuk listened in silence, his face composed but his mind troubled by the insinuations he heard. "With our king missing, we must prepare for the worst," one advisor suggested, his tone detached. "If he is no longer with us, the kingdom will need to prepare for new leadership and stability." Hyunsuk's heart tightened at the advisor's words, but he remained silent, not wanting to cause a scene. However, as the conversation continued and more advisors spoke of Jihoon's possible demise, his patience began to wear thin. "I say we must prepare ourselves for succession," another advisor added. "The people need a clear path forward in these uncertain times." Hyunsuk's grip on his chair tightened, his emotions bubbling to the surface. Before he could speak, Jeongwoo suddenly stood, raising his sword high. His voice echoed through the chamber, sharp and filled with righteous indignation. "All tongues that speak ill of the king would be removed!" Jeongwoo declared, his gaze fierce and unwavering. "The king is alive and well somewhere, and we shall not allow his image to be tarnished! Let no one here forget his bravery and loyalty to this kingdom!" The court fell into stunned silence at Jeongwoo's outburst, the tension in the room high. The advisors exchanged nervous glances, realizing they had overstepped their bounds. Hyunsuk, though momentarily taken aback by the turn of events, felt a surge of gratitude for Jeongwoo’s support. Jaehyuk quickly stepped in to soothe Hyunsuk, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "My queen, remain calm," Jaehyuk urged, his voice gentle but firm. "The prince speaks with proficiency, but we must not let our emotions cloud our judgment. Let us guide this meeting with wisdom and patience." Hyunsuk nodded, taking a deep breath to steady himself. Though the advisors' words had stung, he knew he needed to maintain composure for the sake of his kingdom. "Let us move forward with respect for the king’s duty and his dedication to this land," Hyunsuk said, his voice clear and steady. "The search for the king continues, and until we know his fate, we shall hold fast to hope. Our duty is to support our king, in absentia or in presence." The advisors nodded, their expressions solemn. Though they may have disagreed with Hyunsuk's stance, they knew better than to challenge him openly. The court proceeded with caution, aware that their queen's loyalty to Jihoon was resolute. The session continued, albeit with a newfound sense of reverence for Jihoon and his contributions to the kingdom. Though the tension remained, Hyunsuk's determination to uphold his husband's legacy kept the court in check. At the same time in the countryside, Jihoon remained weak, his condition continued to improve under the careful attention of a loving couple. They watched over him with patience and kindness, providing him with the warmth of their home and their care.  The next morning, as the sun rose over the horizon, Jihoon surprised the husbands by speaking to them for the first time. His voice was soft and hoarse, but the words carried a sense of urgency. "Who am I?" he asked, his gaze searching their faces. "Can you tell me who I am? I cannot recall my own name, my family, nor how I have come to be here." Junkyu and Mashiho exchanged startled glances, taken aback by Jihoon's question. Though they had been caring for him for days, they knew little of his true identity beyond his aura and presence. Their minds raced in confusion. "Hyung-nim," Junkyu began, "we are just a normal couple in the calm borders of the kingdom and know not who you are or where you come from. I found you injured by the waterfall, half-unconscious and in need of aid. I brought you here to heal." Mashiho stepped closer, his expression filled with compassion. "I am Mashiho and he is my husband Junkyu," he said, introducing them both. "He is a farmer, and I am a tailor. You are welcome in our home as long as you need rest and recovery." Jihoon nodded slowly, listening intently to their words. He struggled to grasp the extent of his memory loss, but he could sense the sincerity of the couple's kindness. "I thank you both," Jihoon said and bowed, his voice quiet yet grateful. "Your care has been a blessing. I shall do my best to remember myself, though the path ahead may be challenging." Junkyu smiled warmly, placing a reassuring hand on Jihoon's arm. "You need not rush, Hyung-nim. Take your time to heal and regain your strength. We shall stand by your side and assist you as you recover." Mashiho nodded in agreement, offering Jihoon a soft smile. "Indeed, we will continue to provide for you as you journey to remember who you are. Your well-being is our priority, and we hope you find solace in our humble home." Jihoon nodded, touched by their kindness and care. Though he still felt a great deal of uncertainty, he found comfort in their presence and their support. "Your hospitality brings me much relief," Jihoon said, his expression grateful. "I hope to one day remember myself and repay your generosity." Junkyu and Mashiho exchanged smiles, their hearts warmed by Jihoon's gratitude. They knew the road ahead might be long and filled with challenges, but they were committed to helping Jihoon on his journey to recovery. Though Jihoon's identity remained a mystery, they held hope that he would soon uncover the truth about himself and his past so that he could reach his loved ones.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Two months had passed since Jihoon first awakened in the countryside, and under the care of husbands Junkyu and Mashiho, he had made significant strides in his recovery. Though his physical strength had returned, he had to wear a full salve-scarf around his face to conceal the scars left by his injuries for it to heal. His memory, however, remained elusive—he could not recall his name or his life. Despite this, Jihoon had adapted to his new life in the countryside, finding a sense of peace in the simplicity of his surroundings. He began to accompany Junkyu and Mashiho to the market, helping them sell fruits, vegetables, and clothes. His quiet demeanor and willingness to assist endeared him to the local community, though no one was able to figure or guess his true identity much to Jihoon's dismay. One morning, as the couple prepared for the market, Jihoon helped load their cart with fresh produce and garments. He adjusted his scarf to ensure it covered his face and then turned to Mashiho. "Is there anything else you require me to carry?" he asked, his voice calm and even. Mashiho smiled at Jihoon's thoughtfulness. "You have done more than enough, Hyung-nim," he replied. "Your help is greatly appreciated. Shall we set off?" Jihoon nodded, his eyes softening with gratitude. "Let us go, then. The market awaits." Together, they made their way to the market, the simple tasks of daily life providing Jihoon with a sense of purpose and distraction from his internal struggle.  Meanwhile, back at the castle, the absence of King Jihoon continued to weigh heavily on the hearts of all. The kingdom was in turmoil, its people distraught and longing for their beloved king's return. The situation was tense, and there was a sense of uncertainty about the future. A royal meeting was called, and Hyunsuk arrived with Jaehyuk and Jeongwoo at his side. The hall was filled with royal advisors, nobles, and military leaders, all awaiting Hyunsuk's guidance. The atmosphere was somber, reflecting the gravity of the situation. Hyunsuk took his place at the head of the chamber, his expression determined yet heavy with the burden of Jihoon's absence. Jaehyuk and Jeongwoo stood close by to him. "Esteemed council," Hyunsuk began, his voice firm yet gentle, "we gather today to discuss the state of our kingdom and our ongoing search for King Jihoon. Our efforts to find him have thus far been fruitless, but we must remain steadfast in our pursuit." The advisors exchanged glances, their expressions filled with concern. One stepped forward to speak. "Your Highness, the continued absence of King Jihoon is a grave concern for us all. We must consider our options should he not return." Hyunsuk's gaze hardened, his expression stern. "King Jihoon is not lost to us," he said, his voice filled with conviction. "We must not give in to despair. Our duty is to keep searching and to maintain hope for his safe return." Jeongwoo nodded in agreement, his loyalty to his brother strong as ever. "Our king is a warrior, a man of unmatched strength. We must hold true to our belief in his survival and his return." Jaehyuk placed a reassuring hand on Hyunsuk's shoulder, supporting his cousin's resolve. "Indeed," Jaehyuk said, his voice calm and measured. "Let us not entertain thoughts of giving up our search. Instead, we should focus on strategies to expand our efforts and explore new avenues." The royal meeting continued within the grand hall, the air thick with the weight of decisions yet to be made. Hyunsuk sensed a change in the atmosphere. There were hushed whispers of something unknown, something that was hesitant to be put forward, “Well, if there are any more queries do tell, noblemen”, he uttered with a warm smile. Chief Advisor Min, an elder statesman with years of service to the crown, cleared his throat and stood, drawing the attention of the assembly. "Your Highness," he began, addressing Hyunsuk, "we must discuss the future of our kingdom in the absence of King Jihoon. It is imperative that we ensure stability and continuity. To that end, I propose we consider a marriage alliance for Prince Jeongwoo." Jeongwoo's eyes widened in shock, and he glanced at Jaehyuk, whose expression mirrored his own surprise. The thought of marriage had not crossed Jeongwoo's mind, especially not in the current circumstances. "Marriage alliance?" Jeongwoo echoed, unable to hide his disbelief. "Chief Advisor, this is neither the time nor the place to discuss such matters." Chief Min remained calm, his demeanor set. "Forgive me, Your Highness, but the stability of our kingdom depends on strong alliances. A marriage would fortify our ties with neighboring realms and ensure the continued prosperity of Johwa." Hyunsuk observed the exchange, his mind calculating the depth of the talk. He understood the political necessity of the proposal, but he also saw the distress it caused Jeongwoo. "Chief Advisor Min," Hyunsuk said, "while I understand the importance of alliances, we must consider the feelings of Prince Jeongwoo in this matter. This discussion may be premature given our current predicament." Other nobles, emboldened by Chief Min's suggestion, began to chime in. "There are many suitable matches for Prince Jeongwoo," one said. "A princess from the northern kingdom, or perhaps a prince from the western lands." Jaehyuk's heart ached at the thought, and he avoided Jeongwoo's gaze. Despite his efforts to remain composed, he could not help but feel a pang of jealousy and sorrow. He and Jeongwoo had shared unsaid feelings for each other, and the prospect of Jeongwoo being wed to another was unbearable. Jeongwoo, sensing Jaehyuk's turmoil, felt a surge of frustration. "I have no interest in such alliances at this time," he declared, his voice firm. "My focus is on the search for my brother and the well-being of our kingdom." Hyunsuk, noting Jeongwoo's disinterest and the underlying tension between him and his cousin, decided to intervene. "This matter shall be postponed for a later time," he announced, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Our priority remains the safe return of King Jihoon and the stability of our realm. We shall revisit the topic of alliances when the time is more appropriate." Relief washed over Jeongwoo and Jaehyuk, though they dared not show it openly. The other nobles, though disappointed, respected Hyunsuk's decision and fell silent. The meeting continued with discussions on state affairs and the search efforts for Jihoon, but the atmosphere had shifted. Jeongwoo and Jaehyuk, though outwardly composed, felt the weight of their different thoughts between them.
Meanwhile, in the tranquil countryside, Jihoon was beginning to experience flashes of memories. He had taken to accompanying Junkyu and Mashiho to the market, helping them sell their produce and goods. His presence, though quiet and enigmatic, had become a familiar sight to the townspeople. That noon, as Jihoon stood by the stall, arranging fruits in neat rows, a sudden image flashed in his mind. Jihoon saw a figure calling his name, like a distant melody carried on a gentle breeze, fleeting yet resonant. The smile that greeted him was a sunbeam breaking through clouds, warm and tender, wrapping around him like a comforting embrace. Though the vision was fleeting as morning mist, its presence left an imprint on his heart, stirring emotions buried deep within him, like a dormant seed awakened by the first touch of spring. Startled, Jihoon paused, his hand frozen in mid-air. He tried to focus, to grasp the fleeting memory, but it slipped away like water through his fingers. Confusion and frustration welled up inside him. "Hyung-nim, are you well?" Junkyu asked, noticing Jihoon's sudden stillness. Jihoon shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. "I... I saw something," he said, his voice tinged with uncertainty. "A memory, perhaps. Someone calling me, smiling at me. But it is all so unclear." Mashiho, who had been arranging garments on the other side of the stall, looked over with concern. "Maybe it is a sign, Hyung-nim. Maybe your memories are beginning to return." Jihoon nodded slowly, though his confusion remained. "I wish I could remember more. It is like trying to grasp at shadows." Junkyu placed a reassuring hand on Jihoon's shoulder. "Give it time. Memories often return in fragments. Do not rush yourself." Jihoon took a deep breath, trying to calm the turmoil within him. "Thank you, both of you. Your kindness has been a great comfort to me. I shall do my best to piece together these fragments."  As the day wore on, Jihoon continued to help at the market, his thoughts returning again and again to the fleeting memory. Who was the person in his vision? What connection did they have to him? The questions gnawed at him, but he resolved to remain patient and let the answers come in their own time.
Back at the castle, the royal meeting concluded with plans to intensify the search for Jihoon and to bolster the kingdom's defenses. Hyunsuk, Jaehyuk, and Jeongwoo emerged from the chamber, the weight of their responsibilities heavy upon them. Jaehyuk, sensing Jeongwoo's unease, gently touched his arm. "Are you alright, prince?" he asked softly. Jeongwoo nodded, though his eyes betrayed his inner turmoil. "I am fine, Jaehyuk. It is just... the thought of marriage, of alliances. It is not what I wish for." Jaehyuk's heart ached at Jeongwoo's words. "I understand," he said quietly. "But we must do what is best for the kingdom." Jeongwoo looked into Jaehyuk's eyes, seeing the same unspoken emotions reflected back at him. "And what is best for the kingdom, Jaehyuk? Is it truly to bind myself to someone I do not love?" Jaehyuk's gaze faltered and he looked at his feet, unable to meet Jeongwoo's piercing eyes. "It is not a question we can answer easily," he said, his voice barely above a murmur. "But...but know that you are not alone in your feelings." Jeongwoo placed a hand on Jaehyuk's cheek, a gesture of both comfort and longing. "Thank you, Jaehyuk. Those words...they mean a lot to me ." As they walked through the corridors of the castle in silence, Hyunsuk joined them, his expression thoughtful. "I know there were some hard points spoken," he said, his voice soothing. "Our kingdom needs us to be strong, both for ourselves and for our people, for Jihoon." Jeongwoo and Jaehyuk nodded, their resolve strengthened by Hyunsuk's words. Though the path ahead was uncertain, they knew they had each other to rely on.
And, in the countryside, Jihoon continued to struggle with the fragments of his memory. As the sun set and the market closed, he helped Junkyu and Mashiho pack up their goods. The couple's kindness and patience had become a beacon of hope for him. That evening, as they sat around the hearth, Jihoon spoke of his confusion. "I had another flash of memory now," he said, his voice tinged with frustration. "Someone smiling at me, calling my name. But I could not see their face." Junkyu nodded, his expression understanding. "Memories often return in pieces. It may take time, but you will remember." Mashiho placed a comforting hand on Jihoon's arm. "We believe in you, Hyung-nim. Whatever your past may be, you are welcome here as long as you need." Jihoon felt a wave of gratitude wash over him. "Words cannot express my gratitude, truly, to both of you. Your kindness has given me strength. I shall continue to search for my memories, and perhaps one day, I shall know who I truly am." As the rain continued to fall outside, the three of them sat in silence, each lost in their thoughts. The sky wept for the separation of Hyunsuk and Jihoon, but within the warmth of the cottage, there was a glimmer of hope.
At the castle, Hyunsuk retired to his chambers, exhaustion weighing heavily upon him. Jaehyuk and Jeongwoo lingered in the garden, the night air cool and soothing. "Do you think we shall ever find him?" Jaehyuk asked softly, his voice filled with worry. Jeongwoo sighed, looking up at the stars. "I do not know, Jaehyuk. But we must believe. For the queen, for the kingdom, and for ourselves." Jaehyuk nodded, taking comfort in Jeongwoo's words. "We shall continue to search, and we shall not give up hope." As they stood there, side by side, the bond between them grew stronger. Though unspoken, their feelings for each other were undeniable, a source of peace and solace in these uncertain times.
In the countryside, Jihoon lay in bed, his mind filled with the fragments of his past. Though his memories remained elusive, he felt a growing determination to uncover the truth about himself. The face and voice in his visions called to him, and he knew that, with time, he would remember. The rain continued to fall, a constant reminder of the challenges ahead. But within the hearts of those who loved and missed Jihoon, there remained a flicker of hope, a belief that he would one day return to them, as Hyunsuk hoped for himself and their unborn. And Jihoon too, prayed he would return to the one smiling at him warmly in his dreams.  -~-  In the kingdom of Johwa, where the sun-kissed land stretched out under the azure sky like a boundless ocean above, its depths mirrored in the calm and steady pulse of daily existence as life continued with its gentle rhythms. In the tranquil countryside, the market bustled with activity as villagers and travelers perused the stalls filled with fruits, vegetables, and handmade goods. Jihoon stood beside Junkyu and Mashiho, helping arrange their produce for display. His days had fallen into a routine of sorts, filled with the rhythmic cadence of market life and the companionship of the kind-hearted farmers. As Jihoon carefully arranged a basket of ripe fruits, his mind wandered, troubled by the fragmented memories that haunted him. Flashes of someone calling his name, smiling at him, and the warmth of their embrace lingered in his thoughts. Yet, each time he tried to grasp the details, they slipped away like mist. As time went on, Jihoon's visions persisted, fragments of memories that eluded his mind like whispers carried away by the wind. One recurring image haunted him—a figure calling his name with warmth and familiarity, embraced in an affectionate hug.  Who was this person? Why did their smile bring a pang of longing to his heart? Junkyu noticed Jihoon's distant expression and approached him with a gentle smile. "Hyung-nim, are you unwell today as well?" he asked, his tone filled with genuine concern. Jihoon blinked, returning from his reverie. "Ah, no, but thank you, no, Junkyu...I...uh," he replied with a faint smile. "Just lost in thought." Mashiho, folding a piece of cloth neatly, joined them. "The market is lively today," he remarked, glancing around at the bustling crowd. "It seems everyone is preparing for the upcoming news announcement." Jihoon nodded absentmindedly, his thoughts drifting back to the strange visions that plagued him. "I... I had another vision today," he confessed quietly. "Someone calling to me, smiling. But I cannot remember who they are." Junkyu and Mashiho exchanged a knowing glance, understanding Jihoon's plight. "Memories can be elusive," Junkyu offered sympathetically. "Perhaps they will return in time." Mashiho nodded in agreement. "You have been through much, Hyung-nim. It is natural for your mind to seek clarity." Jihoon sighed, a mix of frustration and determination flickering in his eyes. "I want to remember," he admitted, his voice tinged with emotion. "To understand who I am, where I come from...and for who I yearn for."
As the afternoon wore on, Jihoon helped the farmers attend to customers, his mind preoccupied with thoughts of his lost identity and the vague memories that teased him. The sun began its descent toward the horizon, casting a warm glow over the bustling marketplace.  Meanwhile, back at the castle, Hyunsuk adorned in the regal attire befitting the queen, sat in the quiet of his chambers, a subtle glow of anticipation and worry upon his face. The pregnancy, now in its delicate phase, manifested in cravings and a constant longing that tugged at his heart. Yet, duty demanded composure, and Hyunsuk, with a sigh, masked his inner turmoil beneath a serene facade, the weight of his pregnancy beginning to make itself known. His hand rested gently on his abdomen, feeling the stirrings of life within. Despite the joyous anticipation of their child's arrival, a pang of longing for Jihoon pierced his heart.  The royal healers had noted Hyunsuk's cravings and his occasional moments of melancholy. He longed for Jihoon's presence, for his strength and comforting embrace. Yet, duty bound him to the role of the queen, and he bore his feelings in silence, masking his inner turmoil with a serene demeanor befitting his station.  That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the market began to wind down, a hush fell over the crowd. The herald of the palace stepped forward, his voice carrying through the square as he read aloud a royal notice. "Hear ye, hear ye!" the herald proclaimed, his voice echoing against the stone walls. "A message from Queen Hyunsuk of Johwa. The war rages on, led by our brave King Jihoon. The kingdom stands steadfast, and the future heir to the throne is in good health, expected to be born in five months." Jihoon, who had been listening intently, felt a jolt of recognition at the mention of Hyunsuk's name. His brows furrowed in confusion as he tried to piece together the significance of the news. "Eh?" Jihoon murmured, turning to Junkyu with a puzzled expression. "Who is this news about?" Junkyu glanced at Jihoon, a solemn look crossing his features. "King Jihoon, our brave ruler," he explained gently. "He is leading our kingdom in the war effort." Mashiho, standing nearby, added, "And Queen Hyunsuk, his beautiful spouse, is expecting their child."
Jihoon's mind raced, trying to reconcile the fragments of his memory with the reality presented to him. "Ah I see," he replied quietly, though his thoughts were in turmoil. The mention of the name Hyunsuk stirred something deep within him, an inexplicable pull that he could not fully understand. As the market began to shift for the evening, Jihoon bid farewell to Junkyu and Mashiho to rest early, his thoughts consumed by the revelation of something new. He walked back to the cottage under the darkening sky, the weight of uncertainty heavy on his shoulders. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the place, Jihoon felt a mix of emotions churning within him—confusion, longing, and a growing sense of something unknown- a promise. Despite the gaps in his memory, he knew one thing for certain: he needed to find answers, not only for himself but for the sake of the ones waiting for him, the one in his visions and the people who had shown him such kindness.  Back at the castle, Hyunsuk lay in bed, his body resting after a tiring day. Hyunsuk stared at the window of his chambers, gazing out at the moonlit sky and the stars. His hand rested protectively over his swelling abdomen, feeling the life of the unborn child. Thoughts of Jihoon consumed his mind and heart, a yearning that echoed in the depths of his soul. "Jihoon-ah," Hyunsuk whispered into the night, his voice barely a breath with the tears rolling down his cheeks. "Where are you, my love? How are you doing alone? Don't you miss me?  Don't you miss us? You hate discomfort, are you doing well? You dislike skipping food, are you even eating? You despise resting at untimely hours, are you sleeping good? You hate the cold, are you clothed properly? My dear, please be well. And...come back to us, Jihoon. Come back to me, Jihoonie, please, comeback to me...please" Despite the joyous anticipation of his pregnancy, his heart still ached for Jihoon. He missed his presence, his smile, and the warmth of his love. Each second felt stretched without Jihoon by his side, holding him closely while whispering sweet nothings. The door creaked, Jaehyuk entered quietly, his concern evident as he approached Hyunsuk's bedside. "Are you well, hyung?" he asked softly, taking a seat beside him.
Hyunsuk managed a small smile as rubbed his damp cheeks, though it did not reach his eyes. "I am as well as can be expected," he replied honestly. "But I miss Jihoon terribly." Jaehyuk placed a comforting hand on Hyunsuk's shoulder. "The king will return to us, hyung," he assured him, his voice filled with conviction. "I believe in his strength and his love for you." Hyunsuk nodded, grateful for Jaehyuk's effort to help him be strong. "I know," he said softly. "But the days without him grow harder." As they spoke, the flickering candlelight cast shadows on the chamber walls, a quiet witness to their shared sorrow and hope. Outside, the stars twinkled in the night sky, a reminder of the vastness of the world and the uncertainties that lay ahead.  In the quiet moments that followed as his cousin left, Hyunsuk closed his eyes, his thoughts drifting to Jihoon. He prayed for his safe return, for their reunion and the promise of a future together as a family. Deep within him, their child breathed, an unborn testament to the love that tied them all together across the distance. In his single cot, Jihoon dreamt again, an unclear face smiling at him, calling him, telling him to comeback, a soothing voice whispers his name indistinctly and Jihoon wants to hug him in an embrace, hold him, caress his cheeks and whisper words of love. And Jihoon would, all that, if only he knew who that was or who he was. In their own chambers, Jaehyuk and Jeongwoo lay awake, their thoughts occupied with the uncertain fate of their beloved king and the weight of responsibility that now rested upon their shoulders. The silent understanding of each other's unspoken feelings gave them strength—Jaehyuk's unwavering loyalty to Hyunsuk and Jeongwoo's steadfast determination to find his brother, Jihoon. In the privacy of their cottage room, Junkyu and Mashiho slept in a tight embrace hoping that the lost man who was now distressed by his thoughts would soon find his family and loved ones and that their king would return from war to his Queen and their child. And at the moment, as the world slept and dreams took flight, the hearts of Hyunsuk and Jihoon beat in rhythm, their souls connected by an unbreakable thread of love and longing.  In the quiet of the night, the cold winter air was heavy with unease and uncertainty of two souls—Jihoon in the countryside and Hyunsuk in the royal chambers—were bound by an invisible thread of fate. Each minute brought them closer to a reunion they both longed for, though only one knew the depth of their connection, yet, their love remained steadfast, unwavering in the face of obstacles, while hope glimmered softly, like of the dewdrops adorning the petals of spring flowers, which will bloom in their life soon.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

In the quiet corridors of the palace, tension lingered like a thick, unseen fog.

Hyunsuk, now in the fifth month of his pregnancy, struggled to maintain his regal composure. The usual glow that would have illuminated his face was overshadowed by a constant pallor, the weight of his responsibilities bearing down on him.

His thoughts were ever consumed by Jihoon—his absence an unhealed wound that ached with every breath.

The kingdom, unaware of the full truth behind their king’s disappearance, believed him to be fighting valiantly on the battlefield. The advisors, knights, and even the maids spoke in hushed tones, careful to hide the truth of Jihoon’s unknown fate.

Jaehyuk had become his anchor. Though young and unaccustomed to the full brunt of royal duties, Jaehyuk assisted in handling the affairs of the kingdom with a quiet, determined grace. His heart ached for Hyunsuk, but he too kept his worries to himself, never allowing his cousin to see his distress.

They worked together, side by side, in the throne room, poring over documents, signing decrees, and making decisions that would keep the kingdom stable in such turbulent times.

As Hyunsuk carefully reviewed a scroll concerning the kingdom’s grain supplies, Jaehyuk approached quietly, offering a cup of warm herbal tea. “Hyung,” Jaehyuk said softly, “you must not forget to care for yourself. The kingdom needs you, yes, but so does the child you bear.”

Hyunsuk accepted the cup with a faint smile, though it did not reach his eyes. “ I appreciate your concern, Jaehyuk,” he replied, “But how can I think of rest when every moment feels like an eternity without him? How can I smile when he is not here to see it?”

Jaehyuk’s heart ached at the sight of Hyunsuk’s weariness. “I understand, Your Grace,” Jaehyuk said, glancing briefly at the growing bump that represented both hope and heartache. “But we must have faith. King Jihoon is strong, and so are you. His absence is felt, but we must carry on as he would wish us to.”

Hyunsuk nodded, though his heart was far from convinced.

Every night, he would lay awake, his hand resting on his belly, silently praying for Jihoon’s safe return. He missed the warmth of his embrace, the sound of his voice, and the promise they had made to be together when their child was born. The palace, though grand and opulent, felt like a prison without Jihoon by his side.

Meanwhile, at the modest cottage in the countryside, Jihoon’s life had settled into a new rhythm.

The once-great king, now simply a man without a past, had become part of the community in small yet meaningful ways. He had taken to helping Junkyu and Mashiho with their daily work—accompanying them to the market, setting up their stall, and selling fruits, vegetables, and Mashiho’s fine garments.

Though his memories were still fragmented, Jihoon found solace in the simplicity of this life, yet something remained unfulfilled.

The market had become familiar, its bustle and noise a constant hum that Jihoon had grown accustomed to. Yet, whenever he saw Junkyu and Mashiho sharing a quiet moment—a whispered word, a stolen kiss—an ache stirred within him. It was not just a longing but a profound sense of absence, as if something precious had been lost.

The noon sun was bright  as Jihoon leaned against a wooden post to get away from the heat, his mind wandering through the haze of his memories, he saw Junkyu gently take Mashiho’s hand, their smiles so soft.

Junkyu’s fingers brushed Mashiho’s hand as he handed over a ripe, red apple, and Mashiho glanced up, his smile softening at the loving gesture. It was a smile filled with a quiet, enduring love that needed no words.

“You look tired, my love,” Junkyu said gently, brushing a stray lock of hair from Mashiho’s face. “The market has been busy today. Perhaps we should retire early?”

Mashiho chuckled softly, “You fuss over me too much, dear. I am not so delicate.”

Junkyu’s eyes crinkled at the corners as he smiled back, his hand lingering on Mashiho’s cheek for a moment longer. “It is my greatest joy to fuss over you, darling. Let me have this.”

They smiled, the kind of smile that only those deeply in love could share, the world around them momentarily forgotten. However, as Junkyu turned to glance at Jihoon, who was still lost somewhere, his expression grew more somber.

“He seems far away again,” Junkyu said, his voice low as he watched Jihoon’s pensive stance. “I wonder what troubles his mind so.”

Mashiho followed Junkyu’s gaze, concern shadowing his gentle features. “He is searching,” Mashiho said softly, his eyes filled with empathy. “For memories, for something—or someone—who means everything to him. It is painful to watch.”

Junkyu nodded, his grip on Mashiho’s hand tightening slightly. “I hope he finds what he is looking for. No one should be lost in their own mind, not knowing where they belong.”

Lost in thought, Jihoon’s chest tightened, and in the back of his mind, a vision flickered: –someone– a soft, loving smile, the touch of a hand, the warmth of an embrace. He could see himself speaking, laughing, and then leaning in for a kiss. The feeling was so vivid, yet the face of the one he kissed remained a blur. The vision faded as quickly as it had come, leaving Jihoon restless and yearning for clarity.

In the vision, Jihoon stood by a large window, the sky outside painted in hues of twilight. He looked out, and the landscape before him was familiar—rolling hills, lush gardens, and the distant spires of a grand palace. But his eyes did not linger on the view; instead, they turned inward, searching the room. There, he saw another figure, one whose presence tugged at his heart with an intensity that stole his breath.

The figure was seated by a small table, dressed in soft, flowing robes that shimmered faintly in the dim light. Though the face remained hazy, indistinct, the aura of gentleness and grace was unmistakable. The figure looked up, smiling with a tenderness that struck Jihoon to his core. It was a smile that felt like home, like a long-awaited embrace.

Jihoon stepped forward in the vision, the sensation so vivid that he could almost feel the cool stone floor beneath his feet. As he drew closer, the figure rose, and Jihoon’s heart swelled with a profound sense of love and yearning. They stood close, so close that Jihoon could feel the warmth radiating between them. The figure reached out, a hand gently resting on Jihoon’s cheek, and the touch sent a shiver down his spine—a touch that felt achingly familiar, as if it had been meant for him alone.

“You are here,” the figure’s voice murmured, soft and melodic, but the words were muffled, lost to the indistinct haze of his memory. Jihoon tried to grasp the sound, to hold onto the voice that stirred something deep within his soul, but it slipped away like grains of sand through his fingers.

Jihoon’s own hand moved on its own accord, reaching up to cover the figure’s hand that rested on his face. The contact was gentle, almost reverent, and Jihoon felt a surge of emotions—love, longing, and an overwhelming need to protect. He could not see the figure’s face clearly, but the eyes, dark and luminous, held a world of unspoken promises.

As the vision unfolded, Jihoon found himself speaking words he could not remember ever saying, yet they flowed from his lips with ease. “I have missed you,” he whispered, his voice tinged with a quiet desperation. “Every moment feels empty without you.”

The figure’s smile widened, and Jihoon felt a soft, joyous laugh escape him—a sound that filled the room with light. The figure stepped closer, and suddenly Jihoon’s vision was filled with a rush of warmth as their foreheads met, a gesture so tender that it left him breathless. He could feel the rise and fall of their shared breaths, the steady beat of their hearts in perfect rhythm. It was a moment of pure love, one that felt like it had been etched into his very soul.

Then, as if driven by instinct, Jihoon leaned in, capturing the figure’s lips in a kiss that was gentle yet filled with a deep, aching need. The sensation was soft and familiar, like the return of something long lost. Jihoon’s heart fluttered, and he felt a tear slip from his eye—a tear of joy, of sorrow, of all the emotions he could not name.

But just as quickly as it had begun, the vision began to blur. The face faded, the voice went distant, the room dimmed, and the warmth of the embrace dissipated like morning mist. Jihoon tried to hold on, to stay within this fleeting moment of peace and belonging, but the scene slipped away, leaving him once again in the quiet darkness of his modest room.

“Hyung-nim, are you well?” Junkyu’s voice broke through Jihoon’s thoughts, his tone full of concern.

Jihoon heaved a shaky breath, pulling himself from the depths of his reverie. “I am… lost in thought, it seems,” he admitted, a faint smile crossing his lips. “It is strange, to feel as though I am searching for something I cannot quite grasp.”

Junkyu nodded, understanding all too well the inner battles Jihoon faced. “You are doing well, Hyung-nim. Perhaps, it's a sign that all will come back to you.”

Jihoon nodded, though uncertainty clouded his mind. “Perhaps,” he said quietly, though he could not shake the feeling that something—or someone—was waiting for him.

As the evening sun dipped low on the horizon, casting long shadows across the market, the sound of a royal herald’s trumpet echoed through the streets, drawing the attention of all who were present.

The herald, adorned in the palace colors, stepped forward, unfurling a scroll as he began to read aloud.

“By decree of Queen Hyunsuk, it is announced that His Grace shall make a visit to the market tomorrow, to oversee the state of trade and to connect with the people of this fair kingdom.”

Jihoon’s breath caught in his throat at the mention of Hyunsuk’s name. Though he did not fully understand why, the announcement stirred something within him—a sense of anticipation mixed with dread. He could not place the source of his unease, but the thought of seeing the queen, of standing in the presence of someone so connected to his past, left him on edge.

Back at the palace, Hyunsuk sat in his chambers, the announcement having been made. His heart was heavy, yet a flicker of excitement lit within him at the thought of stepping outside the palace walls, if only for a moment. He placed a hand on his growing belly, feeling the gentle movements within. “We shall greet our people tomorrow, my child” he whispered softly, his voice filled with both hope and sorrow. “Perhaps, in their faces, we shall find the strength to carry on, to wait for your appa, of course”

Jaehyuk entered the chamber, his expression warm but tinged with concern. “Your Grace, are you certain you are ready for this? The market can be overwhelming, especially in your state.”

Hyunsuk met Jaehyuk’s gaze, his eyes reflecting a steely determination. “I am ready,” he affirmed, “I must be. For my Jihoon, for our child, and for the people who look to us in these times of uncertainty.”

Jaehyuk nodded, placing a reassuring hand on Hyunsuk’s shoulder. “Then we shall make this day one of hope,” he said, offering a small but genuine smile. “The people will be heartened to see you, and I believe it will do us all some good.”

Meanwhile, Prince Jeongwoo had returned to the palace, his presence commanding as he sought out supplies and strategized for the ongoing war. His thoughts, however, were never far from the one person who made his return to the palace bearable.

As he stood in the great hall, his eyes scanned the crowd until he found Jaehyuk, who was speaking quietly with Hyunsuk near the dais. The sight of Jaehyuk, so poised and delicate in his finely embroidered garb, filled Jeongwoo with a sense of peace he could not find on the battlefield.

Their eyes met, a brief but meaningful exchange that neither could ignore. For a moment, Jeongwoo forgot the weight of his armor, the responsibilities that pulled him back to war. In Jaehyuk’s gaze, he found peace—a feeling of contentment, he guesses.

“Prince Jeongwoo,” Jaehyuk greeted and bowed, his voice formal yet laced with a softness reserved only for him. “It is good to see you return safely, though I wish it were under happier circumstances.”

Jeongwoo bowed slightly, his eyes never leaving Jaehyuk’s. “It heartens me to see you as well, Prince Jaehyuk,” he replied, his tone gentle despite the usual stoicism of a warrior. “I... find myself grateful for these nonetheless, fleeting as they may be, to be here I mean…with you.”

Jaehyuk nodded, the faintest hint of a blush coloring his cheeks. “As do I,” he confessed, though they both knew their duties would always come first. For now, the simple acknowledgment of each other’s presence was enough to sustain them.

Jeongwoo reached out, his hand gently grazing Jaehyuk’s as if to confirm that he was truly there. “I have no words to describe the solace your presence brings me, Jaehyuk-ah,” he admitted, “In a world so often filled with conflict, you are the calm that I seek.”

Jaehyuk glanced down, his heart fluttering at Jeongwoo’s earnest words. Though neither could afford to openly declare what lay between them, these quiet exchanges were enough to sustain them for now. In their silences, they found a kind of bond that did not need labels or grand gestures—just the simple acknowledgment of one another’s existence.

“Then take this moment with you, Jeongwoo,” Jaehyuk said, “Let it be your shield when you are away. And know that I shall be here…waiting for your return.”

Jeongwoo nodded, his eyes glistening with a rare tenderness. “I shall carry it with me, always.”

As the two princes parted, Jaehyuk watched Jeongwoo’s retreating form, the weight of his armor contrasting with the lightness of his heart. In the silence that followed, both were filled with the quiet hope that these moments, however brief, were the foundation of something lasting.

As the sun set, Jihoon lay on his modest bed, staring up at the ceiling as shadows danced across the room. He thought of the announcement of the queen who would be visiting the market. The name

Hyunsuk

echoed in his mind like a soft lullaby, familiar yet distant. He longed to remember, to piece together the fragments of his past that continued to elude him.

Meanwhile, in the palace, Hyunsuk prepared for the next day, a mixture of nerves and anticipation bubbling within him. The thought of reconnecting with the people brought him a small measure of joy, a chance to step beyond his sorrow, if only for a moment. As he looked out the window, the city lights twinkling in the distance, he whispered a silent prayer, his hand resting protectively over his unborn child.

“My Jihoonie...” he murmured into the night, “...wherever you are, know that I am waiting. I shall keep waiting, no matter how long it takes.”

The kingdom continued to hold its breath, unaware of the twists of fate that would soon unfold. The fated lovers, though separated by distance and memory, felt the pull of destiny. The paths they walked were lined with heartache and hope, waiting for their union.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The dawn broke gently over the land of Johwa, its golden rays spilling across the countryside like liquid hope, touching the rooftops and fields with a promise of new beginnings. It was a day long-awaited, filled with excitement and anticipation, for their beloved Queen Hyunsuk was to make his appearance in the city. The people of Johwa whispered among themselves, voices laced with wonder and joy, as they prepared to catch a glimpse of the Queen and the future prince, the life growing inside him, a symbol of prosperity for the entire kingdom. In the heart of the palace, the atmosphere was equally charged with excitement, though tempered by the meticulousness of royal duties. The maids, bustling with coos, prepared the Queen's bath. The chamber smelled of lavender and roses, the steam rising from the warm water like a veil of delicate mist. They laid out the finest robes, spun from silk the color of dawn, and arranged an assortment of jewels that glittered like stars in the soft morning light. Hyunsuk’s maids, their hands swift and practiced carefully applied makeup to highlight the radiance in his perfect face, despite the exhaustion that lingered beneath his eyes—an exhaustion he hid well from all but those closest to him."His Majesty looks radiant," one of the maids whispered, tying the final ribbon into place on Hyunsuk's robe.Another nodded, her eyes bright with admiration. "The Queen is a beacon of strength, especially now, with the future heir."Hyunsuk, sitting quietly as they worked, glanced down at his reflection in the polished silver mirror before him. His features, usually so calm and composed, betrayed a flicker of anxiety. It was the baby, of course—the precious child within him, whose presence was both a comfort and a constant reminder of Jihoon’s absence. He placed a hand over his growing belly, feeling the faint, rhythmic flutter of life inside. This child was their future, their hope.
And yet, the ache of Jihoon's absence shadowed every step. And Jaehyuk, stood nearby, watching over the proceedings with a sharp but quiet gaze. He, too, was dressed in finery, his long, blonde hair falling over his face, adding to his pretty, delicate appearance.
Though his demeanor was calm, Jaehyuk could sense the unease beneath Hyunsuk’s royal grace. Their bond, though formal by royal standards, ran deeper than most realized. He saw the subtle tremor in Hyunsuk’s hand as he reached for his crown, and how his cousin’s eyes lingered on the empty seat where Jihoon should have been."Are you prepared for today, hyung?" Jaehyuk asked softly, concern.Hyunsuk nodded, giving a small, almost imperceptible smile. "The people await their Queen. It is my duty to bring them hope.""Indeed," Jaehyuk agreed, though he knew Hyunsuk’s strength masked the deeper pain. He stepped closer, his hand lightly resting on Hyunsuk’s shoulder, offering comfort. In the courtyard outside, the knights and soldiers prepared for the Queen's patrol headed by Jeongwoo. They checked their weapons, their armor gleaming in the sunlight, their expressions solemn and ready.A royal carriage, adorned with the finest Johwan craftsmanship, waited in the grand courtyard. It was a spectacle of elegance, draped in gold and silver, its wheels painted with intricate designs that symbolized the unity of the kingdom. The horses, their black coats shining like onyx, pawed the ground impatiently, awaiting the signal to depart.Among them, the knights prepared themselves for the solemn duty of protecting their Queen. They had heard rumors—whispers in the dark corridors of the palace—that the search for King Jihoon had yielded little fruit. The kingdom was tense, and every step Hyunsuk took was laden with the weight of a ruler keeping a fragile balance. Yet, today, the people would see their Queen, and they would find solace in the future that lay within him. The market square was alive with preparation and celebration, filled with the sounds of joy and excitement. Shopkeepers, farmers, and craftsmen had adorned their stalls with vibrant flowers, bright silks, and banners that waved in the gentle breeze. Children skipped along the streets, their hands sticky with sweets that had been freely distributed in celebration of the royal visit.Scented oils and spices filled the air, mingling with the chatter of citizens preparing for their Queen’s arrival.Somewhere among the crowd, Jihoon moved quietly, his figure obscured by the scarf that he wore around his face. His presence in the market was unremarkable, just another man among the crowd, and yet, there was a strange energy coursing through him today. For weeks, he had been battling with fragments of memories—fleeting visions of a face he could not place, a voice that seemed so familiar but remained just out of reach. And now, as the market prepared for the Queen’s arrival, Jihoon felt something deep within him stir, a strange pull, as though the very air had shifted."Junkyu-nim," he called, turning to the tall, handsome farmer beside him. "Why is there so much excitement in the air today?"Junkyu, his brow furrowing slightly, glanced at the preparations around them. "Did you forget, Seonsaeng-nim? The Queen is to visit the market today. It's a rare occurrence, and the people are eager to see him, especially now since he carries the future heir."Jihoon’s heart gave an odd jolt at the mention of the Queen. "Ah the Queen, it must have slipped my mind." he said, the word tasting foreign on his tongue, yet strangely familiar."Oh that’s fine but you should know about queen," Mashiho chimed in, his pretty features softening with a fond smile. "Queen Hyunsuk. Beautiful and strong, He ensures our safety with King in war. The kingdom holds him in high regard, especially with the war still raging on. The announcement was made not long ago, yesterday if my memory holds good—he’ll be patrolling the market to show the people that both he and the child are in good health."Jihoon stood there, listening, but his mind was elsewhere. A vision flashed before his eyes—someone’s gentle hand resting on his chest, soft whispers of comfort, and a kiss that lingered on his lips. He couldn’t see the face, but the sensation was vivid, real."Hyunsuk…" Jihoon whispered, the name slipping from his lips unbidden. His heart raced as the fragmented memory tugged at him, leaving him feeling hollow and disoriented.Junkyu noticed the shift in Jihoon’s expression, concern flickering in his eyes. "Are you all right, Seonsaeng-nim?" he asked cautiously. "You seem… troubled."Jihoon shook his head, as though trying to clear the fog that clung to his thoughts. "I... I don't know," he admitted quietly, still tinged with frustration. "There are things I cannot recall, memories I cannot grasp. It feels like I am chasing shadows."Mashiho’s spoke calmly. "Don’t worry, Seonsaeng-nim. Perhaps seeing the Queen today might help," he suggested. "Sometimes, the heart remembers what the mind cannot."Jihoon remained silent, the weight of those words settling over him like a cloak. Could it be that the one he longed for, the one who haunted his dreams, would be here? He glanced at the market square, where the people were gathering, their excitement wafting in the air. The anticipation was almost overwhelming, and yet, Jihoon felt drawn to it, as though fate itself was pulling him toward something he could not yet comprehend. In the palace, the preparations were nearly complete. Hyunsuk, his robes flowing elegantly around him, stood before the mirror, his hand resting on his belly. The child within him had grown, and with it, so had his longing for Jihoon. Every night, when he lay in bed, his thoughts wandered to his missing husband, to the warmth of his touch and the safety of his presence. It had been months since Jihoon had disappeared, and though Hyunsuk tried to remain strong for the kingdom, the pain of his absence was a constant shadow that followed him everywhere."Your Majesty," one of the maids said softly, breaking the silence. "The carriage is ready."Hyunsuk nodded, taking a deep breath to steady himself. "Very well," he said, calm and composed, though his heart ached with each passing moment. He could not let the people see his sorrow, for today was about hope, about showing them that their kingdom was still strong, even in the midst of uncertainty. As he walked through the palace halls, Jaehyuk by his side, he could feel the weight of the crown on his head, both literal and metaphorical. The future of Johwa rested on his shoulders, and the child he carried was a symbol of that future. Yet, as much as he tried to focus on the duties of a Queen, his thoughts always circled back to Jihoon. Where was he? Was he safe? Did he even remember the life they had built together? As he stepped into the courtyard, the carriage awaited, the horses stamping their feet impatiently. The knights formed a protective circle around the carriage, ready to escort their Queen through the bustling streets of the city. Hyunsuk took one last breath, then climbed into the carriage, his hand resting protectively over his belly. As the carriage began its journey toward the market, the streets of Johwa came alive with excitement. The people lined the roads, cheering and waving as the carriage passed by, their faces alight with joy.Children shouted in delight, their tiny hands clutching flowers that they tossed in the path of the carriage. Shopkeepers bowed respectfully, their faces filled with admiration as their Queen passed by.Inside the carriage, Hyunsuk gazed out at the sea of faces, his heart swelling with a mix of pride and sorrow. These were his people, and they deserved to feel hope, even as his own heart ached with longing for Jihoon. He smiled at them, offering a wave from the window, and the crowd erupted into cheers. And yet, beneath the joy of the moment, a strange sensation stirred in Hyunsuk’s chest. There was something about today, something different. He couldn’t quite place it, but it was as if the air itself was charged with a tension he couldn’t explain. A shiver ran down his spine, and he pressed his hand more firmly against his belly, as if seeking comfort in the life that grew within him. The carriage rolled into the view, and the crowd grew even louder, their cheers filling the air like music. As the carriage came to a stop, Hyunsuk took a deep breath, preparing himself for the next part of his duty. He would greet the people, offer them words of encouragement, and show them that the future of Johwa was bright.
