" Ok Mom, ready? "
It was Nancy Caseys' first day off of parole and though Christie was still cautious around her Mother, she decided that she would give it a chance.
Earlier that morning, Nancy had asked if she could drive them to the nearby bakery, Christie had hesitantenty said yes and now they were all going to pull out of the driveway with Violet in the back, Christie in the passenger, and Nancy in the drivers' seat.
Nancy took a breath, " I'm ready "
And they were off.
The ride was silent, except for the radio and Violets' tablet in the back. Nancy pulled to a stop at a red light. She looked out the window and started to think.
About all the years she spent locked away
About the reason she was even in prison
About all the pain she suffered because she couldn't finish the job
Her last thought was to finish What. She. Started.
Christie yelped as the car suddenly accelerated,
" Mom, MOM!, Watch Out! "
That was the last thing she said before a giant truck slammed into the car
---
" Bree. Bree. Truck 54, Squad 8, Ambo 23, Auto accident, South and Racine "
When they got to the scene it was a gruesome sight. A truck had seemingly ran the light slammed into a white minivan, that of which crashed into a stop sign.
How Ironic, The lieutenant of Truck 54, Mulligan, thought, the stupid truck that couldn't stop made someone else stop by force. He decided to ignore that thought and get back to his job. The guy in the truck was ok and was already going off about how it wasn't his fault. Luckily, P.D was already hauling his sorry ass to the cop car
Squad 8 was already walking towards the car and Truck wasn't far behind, the lieutenant of squad, Rivers, walked around to the driver's side, he looked in to assess the damage and as soon as he saw who it was, he froze.
" Oh Shit "
Mulligan saw the Lieutenant's strange behavior,
" What's wrong? "
" Ulm. You know the captain over at 51"
" Yeah "
" I think that's his mom "
" What!? ", Rivers ran over to where Mulligan was standing,
He peered into the open window, he cursed under his breath, his mom was in the passenger side. Then, he saw it, blonde hair in the backseat of the car. He immediately looked through the back window,
" God, that's his niece ", he pulled at the handle, " We need this door opened now! "---As soon as Boden walked into the briefing room, all conversation stopped. Everyone knew something was up when they saw the look on the chiefs face.
" Okay. So I'm sure you all have noticed by now that Casey is not with us, he will not be here for the next few shifts "
" Why not, Chief? " Stella asked
" While I believe it is not my story to tell " Boden took a breath before he continued, " Casey's Mom, Sister, and Niece were all killed in a car accident ".
At first, nobody reacted, but slowly the realization sunk in.
" That's his whole family " Herrmann eventually voiced his thoughts.
" I know, which is why we should make sure that he knows that we are here for him " Boden continued,
" Herrmann, I'm making you acting lieutenant until Casey is back on duty "
Herrmann silently nodded.
" Alright, Dismissed " Boden said and everyone slowly filed out of the briefing room, murmuring things amongst themselves.
---Boden looked up at a knock on his door, it was Severide
" Um chief, can I step out for a second to check on Casey, I tried calling, but he hasn't answered. I'll keep my radio on "
" Sure ", he thought for a second, " Make sure to tell him, we're here for him "
" Will do " Severide said as he stepped out the room. He walked out to the App. Floor,
" Squad, we're going for a ride "
