Work Text
“Hazelnut, this is your dad. I shouldn’t have to call you every morning. Now get your butt out of bed! You have class this morning.” I could already hear the exasperation in my father’s voice as I reached over to pick up my iPhone and smiled at the handsome picture on the screen. Leave it to him to start my day off right. Yawning, I pushed myself up from the twin-size mattress and frowned at the threadbare curtains barely keeping the morning light out. I hate Thursdays. I hate how they come around and just ruin a good week while giving me no apology in return. Wait… I’m getting ahead of myself here. Let’s go back. Way back... to the beginning... well not the beginning but... I think you get what I’m trying to say.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Corriander Felicia Brennaur and I am nobody. At least that's what everyone whispered behind my back when I walked past them. I wasn't what you'd call a popular person. Hell, I wasn't even known to the student population. I've never tried out for after school activities and not one of my teachers told me I was special. So yeah, I guess to them I was nobody.
Taking my iPhone in hand I cradled the phone between my shoulder and ear as I climbed out of bed.
“You’re up!” My dad exclaimed on the other end. Smiling at his voice I wandered over to my window and pulled the curtains back, cringing at the morning sunlight.
“I’ve been up for a while just thinking about life.” I said heading back to my bed plopping back onto the mattress.
“As long as you’re awake and completely out of bed I’m happy.” He spoke. Sitting up slowly from the bed I pushed off the mattress once again. It was like he was psychic and knew I’d gotten back into bed or something.
“Yep, that’s me… out of bed… not even lying on top of it… well remember I won’t be over tonight because I’m working at the carnival, but I will be by this weekend.” I said trying not to sound guilty.
“Yes, I remember. Have fun and don’t scare them too badly Hazelnut, we don’t want a repeat of middle school.” My dad chuckled bringing back memories of my youth. The images of kids running from the classroom screaming their heads off came to mind. Yeah… let’s not have a repeat of middle school.
“Gotcha, I love you daddy.” I spoke.
“Back at you Hazelnut, bye.” He said before hanging up. Tossing my phone onto my blankets I sighed at the ceiling resisting the urge to get back into bed. As much as I love my father the stench of Thursday still lingered in the air.
“I hate Thursdays.” I muttered to myself. In all fairness I don’t hate the actual day it’s just what the day brings. Growing up the way I did school was never easy for me. If it hadn’t been for my family, I probably would have given up a long time ago. It took a while for me to accept that I wasn’t like everyone else.
So, by the time I stopped trying to be like the masses and began to be myself graduation day was here. I was happy to be rid of them but like most things in my life there was a little hiccup involved. When it was time to march into the ceremony where was I? Well… I overslept. I was supposed to meet my dad there but ended up missing the entire thing which prompted me having to go back the following week to Abern High to pick up my diploma. I would have liked to march in with my cap and gown, to sit in the crowd listening to a not-so-great commencement speech but apparently it wasn’t in the cards for me. Really at that point it didn't matter anymore; I mean I had no good memories of the place, or the students why pretend to miss them? The only thing that mattered was I graduated… barely.
Now I’m a freshman at Peachtree City Community College in Atlanta, Georgia. Mind you it was the only college that would accept me due to my nonexistent extra-curricular activities and recommendation letters. I packed my meager belongings and made the trek over to the college campus like the rest of the freshmen eager to start the new phase of their lives. My dad kept taking pictures like he’d never see me again all the while trying not to cry. With one last rib bruising hug he kissed my forehead and left me to my own vices. I thought maybe this was my chance to blend in. You know, to be one of the crowd, to be like everyone else. To just be normal… let’s just say things aren’t working out as planned. Now when mornings come, I lie in bed encased in my broom closet sized dorm room and watch the sun fight through my hand-me-down curtains dreading what’s coming.
It wasn’t that bad in the beginning. Sure, everyone was ignoring me, but I was okay with that. It wasn’t until she showed up did everything and I mean everything change. Now instead of having a mild dislike for Thursdays I hate them… with a passion that burns deep in my soul. And even though I only had two classes today, Thursdays still sucked royally. First up on this day of horror was Applied Economics. After two and a half hours of mind-numbing torture brought on by Professor Dunton’s labored breathing no doubt from the cheap cigars he smokes and a lack of exercise men of his age desperately need I’m released into the wild to go to my second class, Theories. I loved the concept of discussing the unknown in the world. There is so much in the universe that can’t be explained or packaged up in boxes with little red ribbons.
It’s the only reason I signed up for this class. No subject was taboo, no idea too controversial to talk about. The conversations between my classmates and I were epic. Then she showed up, and it's been hell ever since. My happiness is now non-existent, and I'm stuck in a stuffy classroom with Miss. Prissy Einstein who conveniently seems to only rain on my parade. And I'm not talking about some sprinkles here or there, I'm talking about full on torrential downpours. Full fledge tsunamis with no survivors. She’s all smiles and unicorns in the beginning then she turns into the she-devil, thus making Thursday the most hated day of the week for me.
Besides being stuck in a class with the devil’s advocate I have this unnerving feeling someone is watching me. No matter where I go or what I do I can’t shake the feeling I’m being followed. Because of this I’ve taken measures to secure myself at night with the help from my recent purchases at Whithall’s Wicca Emporium. Now I know what you’re thinking Wicca Emporium. Yes, I meant what I said. Being a wiccan myself it would make sense for me to shop at said establishment. It’s not a known fact about me but an interesting one. Closing my eyes, I took hold of the green and gold crystal necklace I’d purchased earlier this week to ward off evil energy. I could feel the crystal pulsing between my fingers. I felt no negative vibes in the room or in the hall, so I decided it was safe to get on with my day. Stretching my arms over my head and went to my closet and pulled back the eggshell-colored shutter doors.
'Today will be a good day.' I thought to myself as I sorted through my clothing.
‘Despite what she says or does I will not let her destroy my good mood.’ I vowed. I kept repeating that over and over until it was ingrained in my memory. Despite being Thursday today was untouchable. Today is my favorite holiday of the year All Hollows Eve or Halloween as it's now called. All the leaves turn from their glossy greens to their brilliant oranges and shimmering reds. The smell of harvest is in the air and the crisp chill of autumn turns everything into magic.
After pulling on my destroyed red skinny jeans and my ‘Zombies were People too’ hoodie I packed my shoulder bag with my books and notebooks. Kneeling on the floor I reached under my bed for my custom black Converse sneakers. There in a circle lie jasmine, lily, rosemary, and lavender. The ingredients of a protection spell my Aunt Tuny taught me when I was younger. Satisfied it was still in place I laced up my chucks and stood. Looking at myself in the mirror I smiled at my reflection. Pushing my shoulder length ebony tresses from my mocha latte face I stared into my hazel brown eyes.
"Ready as you'll ever be freak." I chuckled.
Before you assume I’m degrading myself I’m not. The term freak is an endearment that my classmates from Theories class have given me or at least that’s how I chose to see it. I went from being nobody in high school to a supernatural freak in college. What were the odds of that happening? Even though they meant the word freak to hurt me it only confirmed for me what I already knew. I am a freak. I couldn't help but feel the tingle in the palms of my hands as it slowly climbed my arms to spread along the rest of my body. They thought I was a supernatural freak because I believed in unseen forces. What they didn’t know is how right they were. Grabbing my bag off the bed I snatched up my keys and was out the door.
As I shuffled my way across the quads; I took particular care to make it to Applied Economics earlier. The quicker I got there the longer I would have to practice my oral presentation for Theories. And practice was the key. Crossing the threshold, I greeted Professor Dunton with a half-hearted good morning. He didn't even look up from his morning newspaper to speak. His balding scalp gleamed under the flickering fluorescent lights while the smell of morning mint and stale cigars wafted into my nostrils. Just that alone confirmed that today’s lesson in Applied Economics would be as boring as usual. After my first week of school was over, I spent the weekend at home with my dad catching up. He loved hearing about my classes and professors. I was trying to explain to him it wasn’t as awesome as it seemed, but he wouldn’t hear it any other way.
“Don’t be so judgmental. He’s probably a nice guy once you get to know him.” My dad said after I gave him a full description of my first encounter with Professor Dunton.
“Nice guy? Seriously daddy I can’t see him being a nice guy. I don’t think the word nice is even in his vocabulary. On the first day he gave us a quiz to see what we knew. I answered every question correctly and you know what grade he gave me? A seventy! When I asked him about it, he said he deducted points because he didn’t like my penmanship if that’s Professor Dunton’s way of being a nice guy then I hate to see him being mean.” I said into my plate of spaghetti. My dad did his best to cheer me up that night, but the fact remained. Professor Dunton was a crabby old man.
Making it to my seat in the back of the class I sat down and pulled out my work. In this area of the class, I sat alone because no one wanted to sit by me. Word had spread around campus I was weird. They thought by sitting next to me my weirdness would somehow rub off on them. If they only knew how weird they were without my help they’d beg for my friendship. Placing my assignments on the desktop near the outer edges of the classroom ring I plugged my ears with my ear buds and press play on my mp3 player. A song from one of my favorite bands Evolution of Days blared through the tiny headset. As I nodded my head to the music and mouthing the words I took my Theories paper in hand. Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes and cleared my mind almost meditating letting the music wash over me. There was only one shot for me to get this out there and I had to be ready. As the song finished, I opened my eyes and looked to the paper in my hands.
'Today will be a good day.'

I could feel beads of sweat rolling down the curve of my spine despite the cool air from the A/C blowing at full blast. To say I was nervous would be an understatement. There was only one chance to get it out there before they shut me down completely. Even with all my practice I was still nervous. I could feel the butterflies in my stomach bumping into one another clumsily. There was a slight tremor running through me causing my paper to tremble in my hands. Instead of delivering an oral presentation it felt like I was standing in front of a firing squad. Clearing my throat, I threw my shoulders back and stood tall. Here goes nothing.
"The supernatural has always existed whether we want to believe in it or not. There has always been unexplained --" I wasn't even finished with my opening paragraph before Miss. Prissy Einstein raised her hand and interrupted me. Her emerald like pupils raked over me with boredom before she turned to her left.
"Um... Professor Rotham is this going to be another ranting lecture about how the boogey man, and the mummy exist and how we humans are just too ignorant to understand?" She asked in a condescending voice. When I saw the small smile appeared at the corners of her mouth I wanted to slap it right off her face. There are no words to describe how much I hated this girl. It took everything I had inside me to stay where I was. I stood there staring at her with the heat of a thousand suns as she sat there staring back at me all calm and sweet like.
Though she looked as innocent as a daisy there was something in her eyes that told a different story, Miss. Prissy Einstein could be nice but apparently only nice to anyone that wasn’t me. Clearing his throat Professor Rotham leaned his hips against his desk crossing his arms over his chest. He was a forty something year old hippie, wearing a tie dye shirt and too short khaki pants. His feet were wedged in a pair of sandals two sizes too small, and they seemed to cut off his circulation. The exposed soles of his feet were crusted with mud like he'd been walking through the nearby woods and never washed afterward. Besides his nasty feet and disheveled appearance his unkempt hair suspiciously smelled of marijuana.
"That's a good question. So, Ms. Brennaur, is this another report about utter nonsense?" He asked. Professor Rotham was the only professor for Theories and him himself didn't believe in angels but could bore you to death about his alien abductions. I stood there with my report in my hand, ready to get my A+ for this outstanding work. All my careful research and fact checking for a solid month and a half destroyed in one breath by this girl who had to be the daughter of the devil. Did I mention I really hated this girl?
"No, I have reliable sources and--" I defended my paper. There were tons of doctors who dedicated their lives to the study of the supernatural but again she interrupts me, her voice heavy with sarcasm.
"The homeless guy that calls everyone heathens as they walk by and the woman who says the world is about to end aren’t people I would count as reliable." Miss. Prissy Einstein chuckled. It was like we were on a sitcom stage, and someone pressed the laugh track button. The entire lecture hall erupted into unison laughter so much, so it echoed off the walls; they were yet again laughing at my expense. I bit my tongue and quickly fought the wave of embarrassment that was consuming me. It was like high school all over again. What was the point to this? Why did I keep doing this to myself? Was I the only one excited about the possibilities of supernatural forces at work? I didn't waste time trying to defend my report any longer; I knew they wouldn't listen now. Many of them were still laughing, tears rolling down their faces.
I did the only thing I could in this situation. Without another word I headed for my chair while crumbling my paper in my hand. Slumping into the cushion I waited for class to be over. I truly hated Thursdays. We never talked about anything but logic. What is the purpose of having a theory if you destroy it with logic? After I was safely tucked away in my corner Miss. Prissy Einstein quieted down and allowed other students to get through their presentations. Once time was up Professor Rotham released us and I made haste my escape through the back door of the classroom. Once the sunlight hit my skin, I felt the shackles of Theories fall right off of me.
I had to remember today was a good day. Today was All Hollows Eve. Miss. Prissy Einstein couldn't ruin this for me. I was determined to have a good day. Taking a deep breath, I cleared my head and focused on the fun I’d have later.
To support the local schools and community the college sponsored a carnival every year. This year I'd been chosen for the fortune teller's booth. Usually, they don’t allow freshmen to take on such large responsibilities alone but no one else was up for it so it’s all mine. I was more than excited. Not only was the fortune teller's booth the most popular booth, but it would also allow me the chance to show off what I can really do. Ever since I could remember I've been able to see and feel things. I’m not talking about seeing a leaf move in the wind and feeling it blow against my skin. I’m talking about something that can only be classified as supernatural.
I keep that to myself mostly because people already think I'm weird, I mean why add fuel to the fire? I mean let’s not alienate them. I still have three more years at this school. Grinning to myself I couldn't help but think that's exactly what will happen when my predictions come true. Some will fear me, some won't believe, and others will be utterly confused by the whole thing. Let’s hope everyone will be confused and think I’m just a good actress. I hoped Miss. Prissy Einstein comes by so I can shut her up for the rest of her life and then some.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
"She started on the supernatural again. I don't think I can keep her quiet for much longer." Antonette said tossing her bag on the table, taking a seat by the desk she closed her eyes and frowned.
"Did she have anything?" Anton asked while putting the finishing touches on Antonette’s composition essay.
"I read most of it before she trashed it. She figured out the most ancient three bloodlines and that all three uses specific hierarchies. She wrote about some of the rules and traditions that are followed by some of the supernatural species and that we all are mortal enemies. I don’t know where she uncovered her information, but it’s dated. And might I add she’s exhausting to listen to. I’ve heard no one talk to themselves so much in my life." Antonette said rubbing her temples. Looking up from the essay Anton blinked then grinned.
"Wow.... do you really think it's her? I mean we've been searching for her over three hundred years. She has to be the one we’re looking for." Anton chuckled glimpsing Antonette’s tired face. Yawning Nicholette rolled across the bed and stretched her body before relaxing back into the full-size mattress.
"Well, I believe we aren't the only ones who believe she is the one." Nicholette yawned again.
"What do you mean?" Antonette asked opening her eyes.
"I think she senses someone is following her. She went to Whithall on Saturday and spent more than an hour shopping. Sherman said she’d purchased protection amulets and dried herbs. He said she'd strung one up and put it around her neck before she left the store." Nicholette explained. Grinning Anton reared back in his chair amazed at the events happening when a thoughtful look appeared on his face.
"Are they working?" He asked. Sitting up from the other side of the bed, Nicholi let out a low whistle while shaking his head slowly.
"Are they working? She meant for the herbs to protect her while she’s in her dorm room. Instead, its protecting the entire building, while the amulet around her neck protects anyone within a twenty-foot radius of her. Not even a semi-gifted wiccan could produce such an amount of power before ascending." Nicholi said in an awe-struck whisper. Nodding Anton stood and passed the finished essay to Antonette.
"It has to be her. There’s too much irrefutable proof." Anton stated matter-of-factly. Both Antonette and Nicholette nodded in agreement to Anton’s assessment while sitting in the corner of the room, Dominic glared at his fists.
"No, its mere chance it seems like her. The carnival is tonight. If and only if she uses the gift of sight will we take action not before then; we won't have a repeat of Italy." He said glaring at each of them to make sure they caught his meaning. Lying on the floor next to Dominic DeAnni smiled.
"I must concur with my brother. We see the evidence and it is as you say Anton overwhelming, but we must have undeniable facts before we do anything rash. For all we know she's a practicing wiccan and is just beyond gifted. Then again, she could be whom we seek. We've waited this long what is another hour?"
* * * * * * * * * * * * * *
I sat at the small wooden table watching as everything was set up around the tent for tonight’s carnival.
"You sure you’re up for this?" Manny asked me for the third time in a ten minutes. Rolling my eyes, I gave him a long-suffering sigh then marched over to the trunk containing various costumes and pulled out some of the printed scarves to wrap around my ebony hair like a turban.
"Yeah Manny, I got this in the bag." I said my words laden with sarcasm.
"I mean are you sure because if not--" He started hesitantly. Letting the trunk lid fall from my fingers I turned to Manny and glared at him with hostile hazel eyes.
"I told you yes. I’m sure so stop asking me am I sure because the answer isn't gonna change." I ground out as nicely as I possibly could. Manny stood there staring at me before he turned back to the other workers putting the last bits and pieces in place. Once he was satisfied everything was in its proper place Manny turned back.
"Okay, don't be cryptic and don't be obvious. They’re paying good money to have their futures told. Oh yeah, please try not to scare them." He spoke. Grinning, I remember the advice my dad gave me this morning. Pulling the trunk open again, I pulled out an extra scarf, and I tied it around my waist to hide my jeans from view. What fortune teller you know wears skinny jeans?
"I will try my best." I said fixing my scarves around my slender waist. After finally getting the scarves where I wanted them, I looked up to see Manny holding a box in his hands.
"Here." He spoke. Peering at it I took the box then shook it softly to hear noise rattling from inside.
"What's this?" I asked curiously. Going through the papers on his clipboard, Manny scribbled then paused as if he was in deep thought.
"Um... some tarot cards processed chicken bones, and a standard magic crystal ball. It even clouds when you wave your hands over the sensors." He said somewhat excited. Placing the box on the table I shook my head in confusion.
"I don't need these." I said offended. Pointing towards the box Manny frowned.
"How else are you gonna tell them fake fortunes?" He asked. Taking a seat at the table I placed the box on the floor.
"To be honest, I won’t tell them fake fortunes. Anything I have to tell them will be true. I’ll have them lay their hands on the table palms up then I'll put my hands over theirs and--" Manny shook his head causing his dreadlocks to whip about his face.
"No physical contact." He said taking the wind right out of my sails.
"How am I going to tell them their fortunes then?" I huffed. Motioning towards the box on the ground Manny looked at me like I was a freaking idiot.
"By using the crystal ball and other crap in that box right there." He intoned like I had a learning disability. Now this was total bull shit.
"A glass ball that smokes up will not tell me anything I mean--" Grabbing his forehead, Manny sighed.
"You, want this gig?" He asked his voice a little less patient. Looking down at the box and my tools of my trade I bit into my bottom lip.
"Yes." I mumbled. Nodding, Manny reached over and picked the box up placing it back on the table.
"Then follow the rules." He stated like a teacher to a problem student.
"But--" Turning his back Manny started for the flaps of the tent.
"No if, ands or buts about it." He called back over his shoulder. I watched as the last of the tech guys left the tent. Glaring at the box I rolled my eyes.
"Great." I muttered.

DeAnni stood next to the entrance of the carnival with her arm linked with Nicholette watching the comers and goers roam the campus. Next Antonette and Anton appeared each holding a cotton candy cone in their hands as Dominic and Nicholi brought up the rear.
"Wow, these people really love Halloween." Anton chuckled as he pointed to a bunch of girls dressed up as prison inmates.
"This reminds me of home." DeAnni sighed. Grinning, Nicholette pointed to a group of children dressed as flower sprites.
"Aren't they adorable?" She cooed. Giving them an annoyed look, Dominic closed his eyes and shook his head.
"Enough, where's the booth?" Dominic hissed. Ignoring his sour attitude, Antonette pointed in the general direction.
"It’s in the far corner down that path to the right. They wanted it to look spooky." She said eating the last of her cotton candy. Grinning Anton waved at some small superheroes passing by.
"They get an 'A' for effort." He chuckled. Turning toward the fortune teller's tent, Dominic let his eyes sweep the area slowly noting each shadow or lingering figure.
"It's clean." DeAnni said as she watched more children passing. Looking over his shoulders, Dominic's eyes narrowed.
"Be serious. We have a mission here. Nick, Lette, and Ton spread out, Anni to her dorm room, Nette with me. I don't have an easy feeling about this." Dominic said. Giving each other a slight nod they each disappeared heading down the paths created by tents and booths covering the grounds of the quad.
“Nervous much?" Antonette whispered as Dominic led the way to the fortune teller's tent. Shrugging his shoulders, Dominic kept his eyes forward trying to calm his nerves.
"You don't have to be, you'll love her." Antonette whispered again. A corner of Dominic's mouth lifted.
"Let's meet her first then see where it goes."
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
“Welcome my friends please join me inside." I said in my regular voice. I'd attempted an accent but sounded like I had a head cold instead. After hearing me butcher it for the fourth time Manny suggested that I keep it light. No need to ham it up. As the tent flaps were pushed back, I felt my heart rate doubled. Miss. Prissy Einstein strolled in all super cool with a look of suspicion on her face. I was glad she’d come to see me in action. I was so caught up in my head thinking of ways I could freak her out I almost didn’t see him walk in.
This guy could only be described as beautiful. I knew for a fact I’d never seen him on campus before. He looked maybe twenty-five. He wore his dark hair cropped low. It set off his chiseled jaw line and perfectly sculpted lips. The combination of his straight nose, flawless skin and sparkling green eyes made him number one on my bucket list. When I realized I was drooling over him I cut my eyes back to Miss. Prissy Einstein. She stood there with a smug smile on her face. Rolling my eyes, I tried to regain my cool. She would have a boyfriend who looked like him. The world wouldn’t be right if she didn’t have a model-esque boyfriend. There goes my hope that she was a spinster living in a house full of cats. Moving to the chair in the center of the tent she stood slightly behind it while Adonis stopped just inside the tent.
"How did you know we were coming?" She asked. Chuckling to myself I smiled at Miss. Prissy Einstein then her boyfriend.
"Arthur is set up outside. When someone approaches the tent, he buzzes the light panel up there." I explained. Pointing to the small light box in the corner I wiggled my brows.
"I thought you were supposed to be physic." She said snidely. Here we go with the Miss. Prissy Einstein attitude.
"Yeah well, we all get disappointed now and then." I mumbled. Motioning to the chair I picked up my box of tools and placed the items on the table.
"What's your poison? What tool would you like me to use to ‘see’ your future?" I asked bitterly. Taking a seat in the chair slowly she stared at the table and all my goodies.
"Tool?" She asked. Nodding I grimaced at the thought of telling her a fake fortune when I knew I could really blow her mind. Squashing down those thoughts I tried to paste a smile on my face.
"I have an assortment of goodies for you to choose from. I could use tarot cards, but I don't know how to read them or what they mean. I could try my hand at throwing bones but don't get your hopes up on that one either. Last, I could use my always cloudy crystal ball. Tell you the truth, I could rub a pair of sticks together and have better luck." I spoke. Though he didn't look interested in what we were doing, apparently Adonis was listening.
"You don't sound happy." He muttered. Sighing I glared at the table and all its useless junk.
"Oh, I'm not. I couldn’t tell you shit from those things even if my life depended on it. I can tell you your future but it’s policy that no carnival workers have physical contact with any customers." I explained. Laughing Miss. Prissy Einstein shook her head tossing her wavy auburn hair side to side. I couldn’t tell if she were laughing at the rules or me for thinking I could read her fortune. Adonis stood at the flaps gazing out now ignoring me again as Miss. Prissy Einstein sat there looking like Miss America. Between the two of them I had to admit defeat. They looked like a great couple. They were probably junior high school sweethearts who lived in the same neighborhood. He probably threw pebbles at her window and sent her secret notes saying how much he loved her. She probably wore his jersey number and was at every football game watching him play. And here I was hoping he’d just give me a look, even for a second. How sad is my life?
"Well, I paid to have my fortune read and it will be read. Screw policy." She spoke. Did she say what I think she said?
"Are you willing to let me place the palms of my hands on yours?" I asked anxiously. Looking back, she gave Adonis a brief smile.
"That's it, we hold hands?" She asked. Adonis stood there in the same spot as before but had turned slightly to have a better view of the table. The look of indifference was no longer there, it was replaced with a look of apprehension. I didn’t understand the sudden chill that swept over me. It felt like he would intervene at any moment if I moved too suddenly. Was he scared I’d do her harm or something? Well, technically I wanted to slap her earlier so maybe his suspicions weren’t that far off.
"Pretty much." I spoke. Taking her clutch purse from under her arm she held it out for Adonis.
"Here hold this." She said to her boyfriend.
"Are you sure you want her to do this?" He asked. Wow... even her boyfriend was a snob. I could feel my temper flaring even with the tense moment that had just passed.
"I paid five dollars to have my fortune read and I want every penny. Besides I have hand sanitizer in my purse." She spoke. I had to turn my head away to keep them from seeing me roll my eyes. Hand sanitizer? Really is that necessary? As if I was carrying around some kind of disease.
"Place your hands on the table palms up. Relax your body and your mind. Take a deep breath and hold it for a minute then exhale, now ask me one question?" I said before I did something I’d regret… like slap her. She sat there in the chair for a moment with a perfect pout on her face as if I’d asked her the square root of two point five billion. After another minute of silence, she glanced over her shoulder to Adonis and gave him a wink. Turning back, she cleared her throat then gave me a little smile.
"How old will I be before I find love?" She asked. Raising my brow slowly I fought to keep my smart remarks behind my teeth. Like my dad always said if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. Placing my palms over hers I let them hover. Forcing yet another smile, I let my eyes flicker to Adonis who stood there watching us intently before I closed them for the last time.
"Are you sure?" I asked. I felt her nodding her head as I lowered my hands allowing our skin to touch and noticed it immediately. Her skin didn't feel like normal skin. I mean it felt like skin but there was no heat to it. It was like her body was no warmer than room temperature. Maybe she’d been outside too long… or maybe she was made of ice. Pushing the naughty thoughts from my head I took one final breath and opened my mind to her. As soon as I had full contact the temperature of her skin no longer mattered. It felt like an electrical current was running loose through my body. I’d done this plenty of times to know that what I was feeling right now wasn’t normal.
I wasn’t being brought into her thoughts I was being electrocuted. I flashed through her mind, houses and fields came into view. Men and women dressed in mid-seventeenth century clothing were huddled together in groups across the fields. The look of horror and manic excitement turned their features into sinister looking masks. I could feel the cold creeping into my bones. Whatever was happening it wasn’t good. To my left torches were being lit, men dressed in long woolen coats stomped their way through the crowds until they reached the front where two pyres stood. I knew then this wasn't her future I was seeing but somehow, I’d locked into her memories.
Suddenly without warning fire erupted all around me. The acrid smoke clogged my lungs burning my chest. The heat and pain from the fire bit at my flesh. Wave after wave it built until I felt the sting of tears in my eyes. I could feel myself panicking. I needed to get out of there, but I couldn’t let go. I was still locked into her memories. Turning to the right I fought through the smog of fumes trying to get to clean air but the more I ran the darker and dense the smoke became. It wasn’t until I tripped over my own feet did, I hear the sound of a beating heart. It echoed through my head getting louder and louder until suddenly it stopped. Once there was silence, I could feel myself being pushed out of the memory. There was a sizzle of pain as I pulled my hands away. Blinking my eyes, I tried to bring them back into focus, but it took longer than I’d expected. Once I could see the outline of the tent I focused my eyes on Miss. Prissy Einstein. As her face came more and more into focus, I could see astonishment etched in her features.
"How'd you--" She stuttered. Her eyes kept flickering between my flushed face and her burning palms. I shook my head hard trying to clear my mind, but the images were still there, the young man with a set of long white glistening fangs who leaned over her dying body. The way he caressed her hair as she pleaded with him for help. The pressure she felt when his teeth pierced through her skin and the sudden numbness from it. Even with all that playing in my head I could still form simple sentences.
"You have no heartbeat!" I gasped. I couldn't catch my breath. It felt like I was still running from the smoke. The more I tried to inhale the less oxygen I seemed to get in. I watched Miss. Prissy Einstein’s face change to a guilty one within seconds of the statement being said. My mind kept jumping from detail to detail over what I’d witnessed. I needed her to say it aloud, to confirm that I wasn’t crazy not even a little.
"What are you talking about?" She asked innocently. Even when I’ve caught her red handed, she still wouldn’t give up the innocent act. Was she trying to make this seem like a part of my imagination? I narrowed my eyes on her and sat forward.
"You died in the year of sixteen forty-three. You were burned… alive. They tied you to an altar in the middle of your own fields and set you on fire... they thought you were infected but really, you’re a-" It was right at that moment did I finally realize what I was about to say. Even though my education with Aunt Tuny had been extensive I’d met no other supernatural being except for Aunt Tuny herself. To think I’d just met another one was overwhelming. I could feel my words dying on my lips as she stood and leaned over the table. With every inch Miss. Prissy Einstein leaned forward I leaned back. The innocent Miss. Prissy Einstein was no longer here. Before me stood another; someone more dangerous than Miss. Prissy Einstein ever could be.
"I’m really a what?" I heard her say. I couldn't get past the look of hatred in her executors eyes. He sauntered his way to the front of the group. I could see the permanent sneer carved on his haggard face. Holding the torch up high he gave a toothless grin and tossed the open flames into the pile of hay gathered at the bottom of the pyre. The flames caught immediately eating up the dry hay spreading like wildfire.
"A vampire." I whispered. I was too shaken up by the fear to speak any louder.
"And is that what you think I am?" She asked her voice softer. The profound silence I heard after the memory gave me the answer I was looking for even if I didn’t want it to be true.
"Yes." I said a little more forcefully trying to shake off the fear.
"Why do you say that?" She asked curiously. Blinking I let my eyes focus on her as if I could see past her skin. The angelic face she’d worn before had a hardness to it now. Her sassy emerald, green eyes were gone her pupils now shone a gold tint. She looked more like a predator of the weak than the sacrificial lamb she made you believe she was.
"I felt your heart die." I said my voice uneven. She stood there for a moment before giving me a brilliant smile. Oh my God, I was alone in a tiny tent away from the beaten path with a vampire in front of me smiling. She turned her head to Adonis giving him a knowing look; he stood there his eyes unfocused staring in my direction. Then it hit me.
'He's a vampire too... I'm gonna die.' I thought. Miss. Prissy Einstein’s smile only brightened as she twirled from the table. Whirling around in tiny circles she hopped to a stop in front of him. Taking her clutch from him she leaned forward.
"I told ya so." She said before sticking her head out the tent flaps. As she whistled, it sounded like strokes of a Stradivarius violin. Ignoring her Adonis slowly crossed over the space of the tent until he was standing before me. I groped the table out of fright. He didn't look indifferent or apprehensive anymore. He looked like he was ready to commit murder… my murder.
"You must come with us." Miss. Prissy Einstein said as she pulled her head back in the tent. Taking a small bottle and a straight pin from her purse she handed me both. I looked to the bottle and straight pin then back to her and Adonis.
"I suggest you do it quickly, so it won ‘t hurt as much." She said motioning me to prick myself. Looking to the bottle and pin again I raised my eyebrows in suspicion.
"Why? Why do you want my blood? Does it have something to do with your memories?" I asked. There had to be a damn good reason for me to prick my finger with two, count them two vampires in front of me. I would not provoke any attacks from them by shedding my blood. I wanted to extend my life as long as possible.
"We can't leave a trail for them to follow. It’s been hard enough trying to find you. We need no added hassle trying to get you out." She said tossing the clutch to the ground. Right, my day wouldn't be complete without some other creatures of the night wanting me too.
"Who’s following me exactly?" I asked trying to keep the tremor out of my voice. I could see Adonis’s eyes hardened and narrow. I slowly inched to the other side of my chair away from him. Even as crazy looking as he is now; he’s still easily the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. Taking her seat again, Miss. Prissy Einstein pushed back her sleeves. Her inner forearms were tattooed with ornate symbols that created an intricate pattern from her elbows to her wrist.
“Those associated with our coven bear these marks. With each coven the design differs, but it still looks the same. We’re dedicated to protecting the good be it human or otherwise. Others, like the one's following you wear these marks.” She said sliding her phone over I could see the difference between the two symbols immediately.
“They call themselves the Renarilo or The Resistance. They’re the ones shadowing you. They were spawned centuries ago and we’ve done everything in our power to hunt them down, but they remain." She spoke. Now I understood. The creepy feeling, I was getting everywhere I went, the extra shadows that seem to appear out of nowhere, it was the Renarilo.
"I knew someone was following me." I muttered. Nodding her head, she took back her phone then gave me a brilliant smile.
"Yes, you were right. It was a smart move with the amulets and dried herbs. After you enchanted them, they couldn't get anywhere near you." She chuckled pocketing the device. Slowly I let my eyes cut to Adonis then back to Miss. Prissy Einstein. Taking hold of the amulet around my neck I eyed them suspiciously.
"Really, my amulets did all that huh? Why didn't they work on you?" I asked. At first Miss. Prissy Einstein stared at me then looked to the tabletop. Then her shoulders shook like she was going into fits. It wasn’t until she let out a snort did, I realize she was laughing. It was so infectious, but I held it in, just barely. This was no laughing matter. This was in every sense of the words life or death. Turning from us, Adonis paced the length of the tent. His entire body seemed on edge. Just as suddenly as he started, he stopped. He stood back by the entrance again. His breathing ragged and uneven; body tense and knuckles white from the fists he’d held firmly at his sides.
"They’re designed to protect you from harm, like from those following you. We are here to protect you. Think of us as a body form of your amulet." He said his voice sounding strained as if he was in pain. I had the urge to comfort him, but Miss. Prissy Einstein shook her head no. Nodding I understood, silly human he isn't yours to comfort. Looking to Adonis, she gave him a soft sad smile, a couple seconds passed before he suddenly left us alone in the tent.
"Don't worry; he won't be like that all the time, just in the beginning." She explained still staring at the swaying tent flaps. I nodded absentmindedly at her comment not understanding what she meant. Before I could ask her about it, I heard a faint growling noise which brought my eyes back to the tent entrance. Within seconds of hearing, it all illusions of me comforting him shattered. Without another thought I pricked my thumb and held it to the opened bottle. Slowly my blood beaded on the surface of my skin and dripped into bottle. The murky black liquid changed to a vivid red then transitioned into a pristine clear.
Miss. Prissy Einstein and I watched as the liquid altered, her smile ever growing with each transformation. Taking the bottle from me she went to the tent's opening and passed the bottle through. Taking the tissue, she’d given me I pressed my thumb into it. I watched her silently pace back and forth across the tent waiting for something. Two minutes later there was another growl then silence.
"What's your name?" I asked suddenly ashamed I didn't already know what it was. Pausing in mid-stride Miss. Prissy Einstein turned and grinned.
"Antonette Dondrake but everyone calls me Nette." She said taking my hand into her own shaking it.
“I’m Corrie Brennaur… well it’s actually Corriander but I only use that name for legal matters.” I said timidly. I don’t know where it came from, but I was nervous now. Talking to her face to face and not behind her back had turned me into bundle of nerves.
"I know who you are… and sorry for being such a bitch to you these couple weeks. I had to keep up appearances we didn’t know who was watching. But now we’ve found you and you know what I am I can give up this dreary life as a college student and go home." She said with a sigh of relief.
"What do you mean?" I was confused. I thought they were here to protect me. How could she leave? Was Adonis leaving too? Who would protect me from the creepy shadow people? I was about to voice my concern when the tent flaps were pushed open.
"She means she’s leaving this quaint little place and so are you. No need to pack anything of value DeAnni has already retrieved." Another handsome guy said as he breezed through the tent's opening. Smiling Antonette motioned to the trunk on the floor.
"Over there under the trunk." She spoke. I watched as he lifted the corner of the trunk and pulled out three small blue crystals and pocketed them.
"Wait, what are those? Who packed for me? And why do I have to leave?" I asked eager for information. Pausing the newcomer smiled.
"Well, we can't just leave you here, can we?" He said his eyes smoldering at me with his head cocked to the side just so. I looked to Antonette for an explanation but instead she shook her head and rolled her eyes.
"Nick, she isn't yours, remember that." Antonette muttered going back to the tent entrance. Clearing his throat, Nick gave me a winsome smile then turned back to the entrance. They stood like that for a few more minutes ignoring me while I waited semi-patiently.
"You know no one answered my questions." I said to their backs. Turning slightly Antonette motioned for me to join them. Slowly my body stood from the table and made its way over.
"With your existence known now, you won't be safe from the Renarilo any longer. Not even your amulets and spells will keep them from hunting you now. They’ll get to you and when they do, they’ll kill you." Antonette explained.
"You gotta be kidding me?" I said now taking a step back from them. This had to be an elaborate prank or ruse the upper classmen played on the freshmen. Any second they would burst through those flaps and yell ‘Gotcha!’... Any second now. Grinning Nick winked an emerald eye before extending his hand wiggling his long, graceful fingers at me.
"I thought the supernatural was your favorite topic in Theories." He spoke. Shaking my head, I tried to produce a retort, but I could feel my eyelids drooping. What was going on? Why did it feel like my body was encased in lead suddenly? Why couldn’t I keep my eyes open?
"What?" I grumbled trying my best to keep my eyes from closing.
"Vampires, werewolves and wiccans--Oh my." I heard him chuckle through the long winding tunnel I’d been magically transported to. I could feel my body swaying back and forth within the currents of the wind. Gravity was pulling me down to the ground and I couldn't fight it any longer. I was just about gone when I heard another female voice enter the tent.
"It's time, let's go."
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
I could feel myself waking from a deep sleep; turning onto my side I cracked my lids open slowly unsure what I’d see. I remembered bits and pieces of what happened in the tent, but everything was still blurry. As my eyes came into focus, I stretched into a more comfortable position and allowed my brain to catch up. Slowly sitting up I tried to go back to the last thing I recalled. It was like a light switch had been flipped on, the last few hours came rushing back hard. Antonette’s memories of the fire and her death, the look of psycho hatred on Adonis’s face and let’s not forget the bumps in the night trying to get me. All that jumbled together caused the unfamiliar knots in my stomach to explode. Clamping my lips together I took deep breaths and prayed I wouldn’t vomit in an unknown place.
Once my stomach settled down, I let my eyes travel around the room. I’ve never seen a place so beautiful in my life. Not even when my family and I went on vacation to New York. The bed had to be a California king size with black satin sheets. A marble fireplace was set across the room casting a sunset glow on everything. To the left thick expensive looking silk curtains covered the windows that seemed to comprise the entire wall. Swinging my legs over the edge of the bed I went to explore my new surroundings. The room had the look and feel of a five-star hotel decorated with items from the early sixteenth century. Gold had to be the theme of this room because it was everywhere. Slowly I reached over and fingered one of the gold candle sticks sitting in the center of a large oak table. Underneath the glass a large ornate symbol was carved into the wood. Just seeing it brought back another piece of my memory, but I couldn’t place where I’d seen it.
Smaller tables filled the room holding crystal vases filled with fresh white roses and delicate pink orchids. Every other wall held a landscape portrait of England or France’s countryside. The chairs stashed in the nooks of the room looked to be so soft I could get lost in them. Let’s not forget the bookcases lined with expensive leather-bound tomes. Every last one of them screamed ‘first edition.’ As I made my way back to the foot of the bed I tried to take everything in. I kept pinching myself waiting for me to wake up, but it never happened. Leaning against the foot board I noticed a small gold cart holding covered dishes.
“Eat; you need to build your strength.” Said a voice from the shadows where the firelight couldn’t reach. I jumped about thirty feet off the ground clutching my hand to my chest.
“Holy shit, don’t do that!” I yelped. I struggled to drag in oxygen as I searched for the owner of the voice. Emerging from the other side of the bookcase he stepped forward into the light. I blinked once then again not sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me. I must have been sucked into the twilight zone or something. Sexy men seemed to pop up out of nowhere. He stood there grinning at me as if I’d made a funny joke. It was then I realized how I must look. Pulling my fingers through my tangled knots I tried to look somewhat presentable.
"It’s your favorite, sweet and sour fried noodles with spicy pork and a vegetable egg roll with extra soy sauce on the side." He said motioning to the cart. I stood there watching him as my stomach growled at the mention of food. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d eaten. Honestly, the last twenty-four hours had been questionable. Coming forward he pulled out one of the overstuffed chairs at the table for me like a true gentleman.
"I won't bite, I swear." He said giving me a mock Boy Scout salute. I stood there staring at him all the while trying to keep drool from rolling down my chin at the smell of the food.
‘Where in the hell did, he come from? Had he been in here the whole time?’ I thought eyeing the cart. Taking the chair, I let my eyes really study him. There was no doubt I’d seen him before. The way his eyes crinkled at the corner and the arch of his brow. I knew I knew him from somewhere.
"You look familiar. What's your name?" I asked as I unrolled my golden flatware from my ivory linen napkin. Taking a seat across from me, he crossed his legs and propped his chin on the heel of his hand all the while giving me a knowing smile.
"I should. You met my sister, Antonette. My name is Anton." I paused opening the soy sauce bottle.
"She’s your sister?" I asked. Nodding his head, he motioned to my food.
"Eat before it gets cold." He spoke. I took the fork in hand and twirled it in my noodles gathering as much as I could. He sat there just watching me not saying a word. When I couldn’t fit any more on my fork, I dipped it into my spicy pork and brought it to my mouth. While I chewed, I did the breathing exercises Aunt Tuny had taught me. Once I was finish, I could bring Antonette’s memories into focus without feeling the aftereffects. It was the first time I noticed him with her on that day.
"You died with her but I’m not sure how you died." I whispered. The easy smile he wore somewhat dimmed from his face.
"Well let me tell you. Antonette and I had a regular childhood, at least for that time period. After I came of age I enlisted in the military and Nette stayed home to help our parents with the farm. I was only gone for two years when I received notice that our parents had passed away. I refused to let the village council take our farm, so I decommissioned from the military and came home. It was hard but we worked to keep the little land we had. Nette taught music to the children of our village and neighboring villages who could afford it while I did manual labor for wages. It was hard in the beginning, but we made it work. Just when things seemed to get better that’s when everything fell apart.
A man showed up in the village begging for food and shelter. The preacher had gone on a missionary trip and his wife didn’t have the heart to turn the man away, so she let him stay in their barn. She fed him, watched after him. But after two days he died. His body looked to be eaten from the inside out. Back then we didn’t know what it was. It wasn’t until years later after my transition did, I learn it was called the Variola virus.
It ran through the village so fast no one stood a chance against it. When we realized it infected the harvest, we burned the fields trying to destroy the virus before it killed everyone in our village. That’s how Nette and I met our creator Hammis Petrov. He’d been wounded, arrows lodged in his shoulder and chest souvenirs from a few of his enemies. We found him hiding in our corn fields slowly bleeding to death it seemed. Nette and I did what we could to save him, but you have to remember he was an outsider. With the virus killing all in its path outsiders were not welcomed any longer.
When the others got news of Hammis they came in a fury of riots. We tried to stop them, but we couldn’t. We watched them drag Hammis from our home, they took pleasure in beating him until one man snapped Hammis’s neck. Until this day I still can’t describe the feeling I got watching Hammis’s death. It was like we were already bonded by blood and the sorrow that took over me was overwhelming. Both Nette and I grieved for this man we hardly knew and while grieving we contracted the virus by eating contaminated food.
Because we knew how the village felt about us, we vowed we would not let them rule our deaths. We decided we would take our lives in our own hands. Nette mixed arsenic in our stew trying to mask the taste with spices but you could still smell the poison. It burned at first, but we didn’t stop eating until every last bit of stew was gone. It didn’t take long for it to work. Nette and I lay in our parents bed huddled together as if we were children again waiting for death to claim us when Hammis appeared. He said he was there to return the act of kindness shown to him by us despite what the others had done to him.
He said his gift to us would change our lives. Neither one of us understood, but we didn’t care. The relief of seeing Hammis made me regret having eaten the poisoned stew. First, he transitioned me then Nette. He said in order for us to be free from the village we had to die a mortal’s death. So, we let it slip we had the virus. The village pounced on us with a vengeance. It was frightening to see the joy in their faces as Nette and I faced our mortal deaths. They stormed our home trashing it as they dragged us from our beds. They wasted no time tying us to pyres set up in our own fields to set us a blaze.
As the flames licked our flesh I left the restraints of my mortal life release from my body. Hammis started another fire distracting the others aiding in our escape. We stayed with him until he disappeared leaving Nette and I to fend for ourselves.” Anton concluded. I sat there with wide eyes with a broken egg roll hanging from my limp fingers.
"How did you survive the fire?" I asked. Slowly his smile came back as he picked up a knife from the table set.
"There are special properties in Hammis’s blood which allowed us to live through the burning flames. He never really explained how his blood could save us from burning in the fire but then again, we never really asked either. It wasn’t until later before his departure did, he explain his origins but that’s a story for another time." He said glancing down at my nearly empty plate.
"Was he the first of your kind?" I asked curiously. Shaking his head, no, Anton fingered the blade with the pad of his thumb.
"No, Hammis was turned by another more ancient than he. Prince Lopefe Krudsen was his name. Prince Lopefe was sired by King Miliem." As he said Miliem’s name the pleasant smile on his face faded completely. Placing my fork down, I wiped my mouth and stared at him through my lashes. His eyes were fixed on the knife’s blade like it held the missing answers of the universe.
"This King Miliem guy wasn't a good, was he?" I asked. Anton looked to be in deep thought, for a moment I thought he hadn't heard me until his eyes focus on me. There was a sorrowful pained expression that marred his handsome face.
"At one point he was. He was the first of the original three. They were called the Vampire Kings. He ruled alongside his vampiric brother’s King Jaris and Raphael. Before their sire, his Majesty King Kristoff von Trachtenberg, passed he gave a great gift to their Highness’s Jaris and Raphael. King Miliem took a great offense. He couldn't understand why he was left out of his share. It was said that at one time King Kristoff held council with a wiccan who could foresee what was to be. She had seen his betrayal to the coven. Now you must understand, it was also said we were mortal enemies of the wiccan's. The simple act of his sire believing her words over his made him even more furious." Anton explained.
"What are wiccans?" I whispered. There were parts of my life that wasn’t public knowledge to the world. Only a select few knew of my ability to see and I wanted to keep it that way. Before I offered to let this guy in on my little secret, I had to know what he knew. I saw his eyes flicker to the door behind me then back to the candle's flame.
"I rather not use this term but there isn’t another word that can explain what I mean. Wiccans are known as witches." He spoke. Frowning, I looked down at my empty plate, shaking my head a little.
"Here I was thinking warewolves were your mortal enemies." I spoke. I took a second to realize I said that part aloud. Smacking my forehead, I felt a blush lighting my skin. Nodding his head, Anton gave his eyebrows a wiggle before his eyes cut to the door again. I had to catch myself before I turned towards the doors too. What was he looking at?
"We are, well we were. Back then in the beginning we didn't know the wares intentions. The elders thought they were like the other supernatural creatures roaming this planet and pegged them territory stealers, so they didn't trust them. It wasn’t until later we found out the truth of it all. Despite our differences supernatural creatures have one common goal to preserve life and keep harmony. It's after all our true reason for existing. We do it in different ways." He chuckled at my blush. Pushing my plate away I leaned back into my chair and waited for Anton to continue. After another minute I leaned forward and waved my hand in his direction.
"What happened next?" I asked curious to find out how the story ended. Leaning back in his chair, Anton placed his knife on the table surface.
"As predicted Miliem plotted against the coven and crown. His reasons were that they'd betrayed him by allowing a wiccan to interfere with coven business. He turned humans at random. It was thought he was trying to build an army to fight against both the vampires and wiccans. He turned about four hundred humans to do his bidding." He explained. My eyes went down to my hands as I tried to absorb the information Anton was giving me. Four hundred humans lost their mortal lives because of Miliem… four hundred souls were stolen on a whim of a mad man.
"Many died in battle, destroyed because of the rebellion and for the simple fact they were not true vampires. It takes more than just biting a human to transition them into my kind and it’s not as easy as they make it seem in the books and movies. It’s true that with time we vampires learn to control our bloodlust but sometimes no amount of determination or willpower can stop you when your hunger has been triggered. It was because of that hunger close to a hundred and fifty half-breeds died that first week of war but many escaped because their fear overruled their hunger. Over the centuries they'd been hunted down but these half breeds are resilient. It’s been difficult to rid the world of them when new nest pops up from the shadows. Those who surrendered peacefully were spared and were transitioned into true vampires or at least it was attempted. No matter how they try no one can figure out how to complete the transition within a half breed vampire." Anton finished. My mind was spinning at the information Anton was giving me. As I sat there trying to absorb it all the faint notes of music kept infiltrating my thoughts. Looking to the clock on the wall and I saw it was well after midnight.
‘Who is up this hour?... Oh yeah… vampires.’ I giggled to myself. Shaking off the bits of my thoughts I came back to the subject at hand. Bringing my eyes back to Anton’s, I see him watching me with an amused look on his face. Did I look that ridiculous?
"Miliem died that night, didn't he?" I asked ignoring his smirk all together. Slowly Anton nodded. Standing he moved to the fireplace and placed more logs on the dying embers.
"It hurt Jaris the most to know his brother would hurt and betray the coven in such a manner, so he refused to sire his own progeny. Before any of that madness occurred Miliem had already sired his own line of progenies, his elder being Lopefe. It was decided that Lopefe would sire a progeny for Jaris in his stead. It only took a few months before Lopefe found Hammis who saved Nette and I." He said moving the wood about with the poker.
Placing my dishes back on the gold cart I stood and went to the fireplace. I watched as Anton motioned to overstuffed loveseat. Taking a seat, I cleared my throat. With everything Anton’s told me I thought maybe now was the time to ask about the bumps in the night after me.
"Antonette told me that someone called the Renarilo is after me, you mind telling me why?" Smiling Anton took a seat in the chair next to the loveseat.
"Not someone but a group, remember when I said many half-breeds escaped their deaths, we believe those were the true believers of Miliem’s cause. They united after the war to continue his fight. They’ve been working underground for centuries bidding their time. Now it seems their back… for you." He spoke. I sat there staring at the blue flames confused. Why were they back for me? What have I done to them? And if it takes more than just biting someone to turn them into a vampire, how was it, they survived this long? Shouldn’t they have died because they were incomplete? As if he'd be able to hear my thoughts Anton gave me a knowing smile.
"We've always believed that if the process was started and never finished the human would die. Our DNA when introduced into a human body takes over like a virus. It doesn’t stop until there is nothing left. We believed that if the transition is started our DNA would destroy the incomplete body, but we were wrong. We can only speculate on what happens. Whatever happened helped them through to make an alternate transition. They were made into vampires, but they weren’t true vampires only mutated versions of my kind." He spoke. Oh wonderful, the bumps in the night aren’t just half-breed vampires but mutated half breed vampires.
"That doesn't explain why they’re after me. I mean I have done nothing to them that I know of. If I did, I’ll apologize, send a muffin basket, a singing telegram anything to get them to back off." I spoke. When Anton's eyes went to the door this time, I couldn't help myself. I turned to see another person standing a few feet in the room. She was lovely. Her blond hair hung loose around her waist. On her head she wore a wreath of small white lilies and blue irises. Her eyes were just as green as Antonette’s shining like polished emeralds in the firelight. Her lithe frame was draped in a silk sheath the color of cornflower; she looked like Mother Nature personified.
"You, my dear are the next seer." Her voice sounded like whispers of angelic wings. I was so enthralled that I didn't even realize I'd stood to face her.
"Seer?" I asked dumbfounded. Nodding she took my hands in hers. Her skin felt like Antonette's, almost at room temperature.
"You are special, young one. Your abilities make you our next seer." She spoke. Looking back at Anton he too had stood.
"Allow me to introduce DeAnni. She is Dominic's vampiric sister." He spoke. Recognition flared in my eyes as I took in her beauty once again. This was Adonis’s sister… Adonis had a name… Dominic.
"He's taken by you. We've been searching so long for you and now you're here it's… unreal for us all." She said leading me back to the loveseat. Sitting down I watched as DeAnni took a seat next to me. Claiming his chair Anton sat there in silence watching me as I stared at DeAnni.
"He was the first guy I met in the fortune teller tent with Antonette, isn’t he? I don’t think he likes me much." I whispered remembering the fear I felt when he was near me. Nodding DeAnni smiled gently and squeezed my hand.
"He wasn't ready for the effects of you." She said as she pulled out a lace handkerchief and placed it in my hands. I thought of his face and how he looked as if being near me made his sick. I could hear the hostile growling as it echoed in my ears.
"He wasn't sick Corrie; he was far from it actually. Your blood triggered his hunger. He was trying to keep himself under control and failed terribly at it." Anton said smugly. I looked to Anton then to DeAnni. It was then I noticed the tint of her eyes seem to change to the color of the flames in the fireplace. Slowly the color evolved from an ice blue to startling red. Looking back to Anton my eyes widened when it finally hit me.
‘How in the hell did he know I thought that?! How in the hell did her eyes do that?!’ I yelled in my head unsure what to do or say. Grinning Anton tapped his long, graceful fingers to his temple.
"I could hear you." He chuckled. I looked to DeAnni who looked un-phased by Anton’s comment.
"You've been reading my mind this entire time?" I cringed. I couldn't force my voice any higher than a whisper. I was afraid if I spoke any louder, I could damage his internal hearing. I could see that Anton was listening to in my internal chatter once again. He fought back the smile threatening to take over his face.
"Actually, he's been reading Dominic. He's been such a pain since you've arrived. He’s snapping at everyone, practically biting their heads off. I've asked Anton to check up on him every so often to make sure he wasn't pushing himself beyond what he could manage." She explained as she gave an indulgent look towards the door. I couldn't help but to look at the door then to DeAnni and Anton.
"He's been outside the door the whole time, hasn't he?" Nodding Anton grimaced.
"He's been there since we brought you in. He’s worried about you, but his worrying is also fueled by his hunger for your blood and it’s trying our patience." Anton muttered. I wanted to get up and go to the door but decided against it. There was no telling what frame of mind he was in. For all I knew his unhappy mood could have gotten worse. Pulling my thoughts back to the fireplace I watched as the flames shift from red to green then to a light yellowish white color. Looking to Anton I was about to ask him how he did it when something told me it wasn’t Anton making it happen. Turning to DeAnni I cocked my head to the side and frowned.
"How did you do that with the fire?" I asked. If I thought, she was beautiful just sitting here she was intoxicating smiling.
"We have a gift for the elements, Dominic and me. It was passed down from our sire DiCamilo Smirnov through his blood." DeAnni explained.
‘That makes sense. The both of them having the same sire would cause both of them having the same ability. So… if Anton could hear my thoughts that means… Oh crap! Antonette could hear them too.’ I thought. Suddenly I had a flash back to all my ranting and raving I’d done in the heat of annoyance because of Antonette and all her constant interruptions in Theories class. I watched Anton's eyes light up at my revelation. I was almost in panic mode when I remembered the smooth talker from the tent.
"That would be Nicholi. He and his sister Nicholette have the gift of empathy." Anton said. Snapping out of my thoughts I looked to Anton.
"Empathy... they can feel what I feel." I spoke. Nodding DeAnni stood glancing at the clock.
"Not only can they feel your emotions they can influence them. They’re very handy to have around for dealing with Dominic and his mood swings but you’ll find out more about that later. Oh, you must forgive us. You must wish for a bath and fresh clothing." She said as the doors opened, and two young women entered the room bowing deeply at the waist.
"Ah, may I introduce your personal maids and bodyguards. This is Greta," The brunette came forward, curtsying while giving me a dazzling smile.
"And this is Willow." DeAnni said. Her hair was a light brown streaked with golden highlights. She too gave me a curtsy and smile. They look to be in their late teens.
"You're right. They were both transitioned at sixteen but have been halflings for some time now." Anton chuckled. My eyes went back to the girls who stood there watching me with their bright green eyes.
"We'll leave you to freshen up." DeAnni said as she and Anton moved towards the large oak doors. I wanted to peek around them to see if Dominic was in the hall, but I couldn’t get enough courage to lift my eyes.
"When she is ready, please escort her to the council chamber." DeAnni directed to the girls who bowed to DeAnni then to Anton. After the doors were closed Willow moved to the windows pulling back the heavy curtains pushing the windows open wide. A light breeze carrying the perfume of wildflowers wafted through the room as Greta gathered items to take into the bath. I stood there unsure what to do watching them move about the room. I could hear the tap running from the bath, the smell of lavender drifting into the room on clouds of warm steam.
“Um… do I need to do anything?” I asked my voice cracking. I was nervous. I mean super nervous. None of my schooling with Aunt Tuny prepared me for this. Both girls stopped and smiled at me.
"Oh no your Majesty, we shall make all the preparations for you." Greta said. Nodding Willow moved forward towards me.
“Shall I help you undress your Majesty?” I stood there looking at her with wide eyes.
‘Help me undress? Is she serious?’ I thought. Holding up my hands in front of me I backed up slowly.
“Um… I think I can manage that but thanks.” I spoke. Greta stepped forward not quite meeting my eyes looking like I’d slapped her in the face.
“Your Majesty, it’s our job to see that your every need is met. We mean no disrespect. It’s an honor to be in your service but if you wish it; we will take our leave. Please accept our most humble apologies if we’ve offended you.” She whispered her voice wavering. I stood there staring at their pitiful faces kicking myself all the while.
‘Crap; great going you idiot. You’ve managed to offend the locals who happen to be vampires. Anton if you’re listening; you could have warned me about this.’ I thought to myself glumly. Giving them both reassuring smiles I tried to back track through the mess I’d just made before I did any more damage.
“I don’t want you to leave. Um, I’m kind of new at this and I don’t have a clue what I’m supposed to do so… if you still want you can help me.” I spoke. Their beaming smiles from earlier returned in full force as they descended on me with a vengeance.
Smiling Willow wrapped a plush towel around me and steered me towards a large mother-of-pearl vanity situated just outside the bathroom. Sitting me in front of the mirror I got a glimpse of myself for the first time since that night in the tent. I felt my eyes widening and my jaw dropping at the mere image.
‘Oh my God… I look like a train wreck. No wonder why it takes two people to help me bathe. I look horrible.’ I sighed noting my wan complexion and the bird’s nest on my head called hair.
“Well, girls… it looks like you’ve got your work cut out for you so… good luck with that.” I said cringing at the image in the mirror. Greta and Willow just smiled at me then got to work. Pulling a comb made of ivory from one of the vanity drawers Willow preceded to attack my bird’s nest. After the third tug at my tangles, I almost told Willow to just cut it all off but quickly opted to stay quiet. After winning the fight with the tangles Willow exchanged the comb for a bush. I sat there trying to watch Willow’s hands, but they were moving too fast for my wimpy human eyes to see. That’s when I noticed someone standing over my shoulder. I could see his body well enough, the outline of an awfully expensive suit but as my eyes traveled higher his face seemed to get blurry.
‘Maybe he’s here to help too.’ I thought. I sat there waiting for him to step forward, but he didn’t move from the spot in front of the fireplace. The longer I stared at him the more my eyes could focus, and his face became familiar.
‘I know him… isn’t that Adonis… I mean Dominic.’ I thought. After the realization of who he was hit it became harder to breathe. It felt like I was standing in the middle of a Dutch oven or something.
"Your Majesty, are you all right?" Willow asked as Greta knelt in front of me waving her hand in front of my face. I blinked, and the image was gone leaving only my reflection in the mirror. I could feel my face burning as I tried to look at anyone and everything but Greta’s worried eyes.
"I'm fine." I said breathless. My heart was doing a little salsa in my chest at the same time the air was playing peek-a-boo with my lungs. After the third reassurance Willow resumed her brushing while Greta poked about the room. Placing the brush down Willow motioned to the open bathroom door. Standing I tried to follow Greta but suddenly I felt lightheaded. I stood there waiting for it to pass when I felt a hand on my arm.
"Your Majesty?" Greta whispered. Giving her a somewhat okay smile, I took a deep breath. I took her hand in my own and gave her a reassuring smile.
"No worries. I stood up too fast. I'm good." I said hoping I was telling the truth.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
“Have you heard?” Gregory asked as he skirted through the golden French doors leading to the ivy-covered veranda.
"What has been said?" Patricia asked as she leaned back against the chaise lounge. A broadening smile appeared on Gregory’s face.
"A new wiccan has been located." He cooed. Looking up from his book Douglass raised a brow at Gregory’s giddiness.
"What's so special about that? New wiccan's are located all the time." He spoke. Dancing up the veranda stairs Sammy came to pause at the top of them.
"She can only be partially seen." Sammy said his eyes sparkled with amusement. Sitting up Patricia looked to Gregory then to Sammy.
"Partially seen? Are you sure?" Patricia asked her voice not above a whisper. Nodding Sammy came forward and claimed a seat at the end of her chaise lounge.
"Lady Erielyn was most excited when she glimpsed her." He spoke. Closing his book Douglass looked each of them.
"You know what that means?" Douglass said. Seated above them on the branch Desmond smiled slightly.
"There will be a new seer." He said his voice sounding almost relieved. Pulling her knees to her chest, Patricia wondered aloud.
“Who will be replaced then?” Everyone thought about her question for a moment. It was Gregory who giggled.
"It cannot be Lady Erielyn, she for saw her arrival." Everyone agreed then Desmond jumped from his perched down to the veranda.
"If she's a wiccan then it's safe to say she's also human. That means Lord Aiden will also glimpse her." Desmond concluded. Everyone looked to Sammy as he stood from the chaise lounge. The color in his face had faded away.
“That only leaves Lady Leticia.” Sammy croaked. Everyone knew Leticia wasn’t the easiest to have a good relationship with. Instead of commanding with loyalty she commanded with fear. Standing also, Patricia wrapped her slender arms around Sammy’s slumped shoulders, giving him a light squeeze of sympathy.
"That is a conversation I would not want to be a part of." Gregory chortled.

"Ah... interesting." Aiden sighed as he leaned back into the satin and silk pillows scattered about on his personal platform. Seated on her own platform, Erielyn let out a sigh of relief. Placing her scrolls down Erielyn moved to the edge of her own platform and came to her feet.
“So, you have seen her.” Erielyn sighed her voice jingled like the peals of small bells. Pulling her mirror down from her face Leticia watched her brother and sister as they stared at one another. Rolling her eyes, she brought her mirror back up so she could continue to stare at her own beauty.
"Foreseen who?" Leticia asked. Looking to Leticia, Aiden suppressed an eye roll; glancing to Erielyn he took a calming breath.
"The new wiccan." Aiden said almost through clenched teeth. Looking over the edge of her mirror Leticia could hear the traces of discord in his response. Moving to the edge of her platform she stood and leaned onto the railing that led to the stairs to the common platform.
"Wiccan you say. I believe she belongs to Erielyn." Leticia sneered as she leaned further out. Coming to his feet, Aiden descended the stairs as did Erielyn.
"She would normally but this seems to be a joint operation." Aiden chuckled as he and Erielyn met on the common platform. Standing in front of the crystal water fountain they both watched as their glimpses repeated themselves upon the water’s reflective surface.
"Joint?" Leticia asked her voice sharp with suspiciousness. Glimmering down the stairs she joined her siblings at the water fountain to witness their glimpses. She stood there stunned at what she saw.
"She is of human descendant. All human related glimpses pass through my eyes." Aiden continued. He circled the fountain; every time he made a full circle the glimpse would restart causing Leticia’s eyes to harden with each play. After about his fifth time Erielyn caught his arm to stop his progress.
"When I glimpsed her, she was with another. I could not see it clearly." Erielyn said. They both watched as Erielyn’s glimpses played on the fountain’s water. Taking a seat in one of the council chairs, Aiden propped his leg on the arm.
"I was also blinded to see her companion." Aiden said. Suddenly a shiver pulsed through Leticia’s body her eyes had gone milky white. Gasping Leticia reached out in front of her, her legs had become unstable. Both Aiden and Erielyn were by her side in an instant.
"No, it couldn't be?" Leticia said in a sob. Her body quivered uncontrollably as her knees gave way. Catching her around the waist, Erielyn placed her hand under Leticia’s chin to steady her head.
"What have you foreseen?" Erielyn whispered. Leticia’s chest heaved up and down for a second, she couldn’t speak; swallowing hard, she felt her sight coming back to her.
"The wedding rites of vampiric royalty." Leticia croaked her throat dry. Motioning to Leticia’s council chair Aiden helped Erielyn move her to it. Once Leticia was seated Erielyn went to fetch a goblet of wine.
"Which one did you see?" Aiden asked as he wiped away a few of her errant tears. Blinking furiously Leticia tried to calm her breathing.
"Dominic. He is kneeling next to someone, but I can’t see her. She isn't partially blinded she is completely gone from my sight." Leticia coughed. Taking the wine in hand she took a large swallow then another. Standing back, Aiden let a grin blossom on his face. He looked to Erielyn who looked to Leticia.
"Sisters you realize what this means?" Aiden almost whispered. It seemed like a hush fell over the entire room. Leticia sat paralyzed as she stared at the goblet in her hands. The slight tremor of her body caused the contents to slosh over its rim.
“She’s a seer. Only a potential seer can cause so much pain during a glimpse.” Leticia hissed her voice flat and hard.
"Yes. A seer... is marrying a vampire... Oh... it's her. It's Lady Feldaria's descendant." Erielyn said joyously.
"If she is marrying a vampire, it means the legend is true. She is the next vampire queen." Aiden murmured. He could feel relief coursing through him. It has been too long without peace and the thought of another century with Leticia would cause him to go insane.
"Impossible. King Kristoff and Lady Feldaria's heir was killed centuries ago by Miliem and the mutated vampires." Leticia spat into the wine goblet. Giving his sister a deeper grin, Aiden leaned closer.
"It would seem that the historians were wrong wouldn't you say my dear sister." He could see the panic flaring in Leticia’s eyes.
"It can't be there is no proof that this human is the chosen heir." Leticia almost mumbled to herself trying to contain her anger. Kneeling next to Leticia’s chair Erielyn took one of her hands in her own and caressed it tenderly.
“You yourself glimpsed Dominic performing his wedding rites and say there is no proof?” Erielyn said. She could see that Leticia would not believe it until the new seer arrived. Shaking her head Erielyn looked to Aiden.
"It is the only known legend that connects the three oldest bloodlines. Lady Feldaria's descendant is of human and wiccan heritage. She will ascend on the Trinity Moon. She will possess the ancient power of the first covenant mother. She will become the next seer of all things vampiric. You must face this facts sister. Your reign as vampiric seer is coming to an end." Aiden whispered.
"You’re wrong, she can't be--" Leticia stuttered shaking her head no. Exasperated Erielyn dropped Leticia’s hand and stood.
“You doubt our eyes?” Erielyn asked her voice hard. Lifting her eyes to Erielyn, Leticia shook her head again slowly. How could she doubt their eyes? She’d seen it.
"You knew this was not a permanent position. You knew someday that a new seer would be born. You need to accept that the chosen heir lies claim to her throne." Aiden said his voice almost thoughtful at Leticia’s apparent pain.
"There is no use in fighting what you've already for seen. Dominic will wed the chosen heir and you will be a seer no more." Erielyn concluded. Nodding to her brother Erielyn left the common platform to seek solace in her private rooms. Nodding to Leticia Aiden did the same leaving Leticia alone staring at the last image on the water's surface. Slowly her hand tightened around the stem of the goblet as anger rose in her chest, contorting her beautiful features into a mask of fury.
“We’ll see about that.”
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
“You know that isn’t very nice, Dominic.” Antonette said scanning through some of the coven’s old archives. Blinking Dominic let his eyes roam from the fire to see Antonette frowning scowl.“Well, if you guys would stop watching every move, I make I wouldn’t be forced to such drastic measures.” He retorted bitterly. Scoffing Antonette scribbled on a note pad beside her.“Dominic, do I need to remind you I can hear your train of thought. You aren’t fooling anyone, especially me.” She chuckled. Slouching back into his chair, Dominic watched as Antonette finished her note taking and placed her materials back on the bookcase. Coming to kneel in front of him she watched him for a second before letting her hands capture his.“Don’t worry. Once this passes, you’ll be able to see her whenever you want. Until then you know the rules. Don’t make me choose because it will be her.” Antonette said. Frowning Dominic sat watching Antonette stand from the floor and disappear through the library doors.* * * * * * * * * * * * *I think I spent almost an hour in the tub soaking and relaxing. When the water turned cold Greta suggested I get out. Afterwards Greta and Willow helped me dressed in a gown that looked like it was handmade in the Victorian era. It was a golden chiffon piece with black lace gathered at the shoulders and at the hem. The bodice fit like a corset except there weren’t any strings. The bottom billowed out covering the flat ballet slippers Willow placed on my feet. Greta gathered my hair twisting and twirling it between her nimble fingers concocting a picture of perfection. Never in my life could I ever get my hair to do that. It was upswept into soft ringlets. She piled them on themselves and weaved strands of pearls in and out.‘I look like a fairy princess.’ I giggled in my thoughts. Thanking them for all their hard work I tried to calm my nerves as I followed them from the room. When I entered a large conference like room I felt panic flare up in my chest. I wasn’t expecting a room full of people.“I wouldn’t say you look like fairy princess… more like a vampiric queen.” Anton whispered as I stepped over the threshold of the room. Taking my hand, he led me to a large rectangle table and pulling out the chair for me to sit. I fought the blush that threatened to stain my cheeks. I forgot Anton could hear my thoughts. Taking my seat, I spotted Antonette sitting at the opposite end of the table next to Dominic. I hurried and let my eyes skirt over his. He didn’t look sick any longer, now he had what seemed to be a permanent frown on his face.‘I mean if looks could kill. I would sooo be dead.’ I thought. From the corner of my eye, I could see Anton smothering a smile at my mental banter. On the other side of Dominic sat the young man from the tent Nicholi. He gave me a wink and smiled before turning towards the woman seated next to him who if you can believe it out shone him in beauty. As I took in the rest of the people around the table, I noticed that despite the beautiful clothing and new hairstyle I was just an average human being compared to them. The woman seated next to me took my hand in hers and smiled sweetly at me. I could tell just by looking at her she had to be Nicholi’s sister Nicholette. Our eyes connected with one another, my hazel to her emerald green. It seemed like she was trying to peer into my soul or something. The connection was so strong that neither one of us could look away. While I drowned in the depths of her eyes, I could hear a faint but distinct growling coming from the opposite end of the table, but I couldn’t take my eyes away. Instead of feeling ordinary I felt elated almost like I was bursting with happiness.“Cut it out, Dominic.” Both Anton and Antonette said in unison disrupting the spell Nicholette was weaving over me. Blinking I let my eyes come back into focus and wander back down the table to see Dominic’s eyes on me. His brows were furrowed, and his top lip curled back revealing straight and white teeth. Swallowing hard, I leaned back in my chair shrinking under his heated gaze while letting my eyes drifting away.“He’s just jealous.” Anton chuckled. Looking to him I tightened the hold on Nicholette’s hand.“Why, I’ve done anything.” I whispered. Shaking his head Anton motioned to Nicholette.“It’s not you he’s jealous of its Lette. Being as we are… our emotions are more amplified than most beings. What we feel it’s about a thousand times stronger than what a human feels. Since Dominic views you as his, anyone giving you attention and affection drives him to anger and jealously.” Anton explained with an amused little smile on his face.‘Oh great, he’s the hulk of the vampire world and he doesn‘t like to share.’ I thought shaking my head at the whole situation. A tiny giggle escaped Antonette’s lips as she pulled books and papers from the bag beside her. Seated at the middle of the table, DeAnni stood and looked to everyone.“Let us start. First let me say greetings to our newest queen to be,” She nodded at me causing me to smile.“Let me introduce our council table. The council is divided into four heads or departments: the Royals, the Elders, the Guards and the Grimlings, first our Royals. This is Dominic von Williamsburg, High King of all covens. I am DeAnni Phillips-Pierce, Vampiric Princess, my husband Jorge Pierce. Anton Dondrake, King of the Eastern Covens, his wife Scarlett Asher-Dondrake.Antonette Dondrake, Queen of the Northern Covens, her mate Adrian Edwards. Nicholette Mitchell, Queen of the Western Covens, her mate Benjamin Morrison. And Nicholi Adamson, King of the Southern Covens, his mate Violet Webber. Our job is to govern over the foreign and domestic covens around the world.” DeAnni said. I sat at the table with my jaw hanging open as each person stood and bowed. They weren’t just beautiful supernatural creatures. They were beautiful vampiric royalty.“The Elders are seen as the Grand Dukes and Duchesses of the coven. They oversee all domestic duties within the coven. Each coven has their own set of elders to help run the coven's daily lives. May I introduce Francisco Watson, his wife, Millicent Carter and Geoffrey Rivera, his wife Ursula Gray. Next the leaders of our Vampiric Guard, Commander Stefan Garcia and his Lieutenant Willow Roberts and Commander Greta Windberg and her Lieutenant Cameron Tyler. The Vampiric Guards oversee the safety of the entire coven especially the safety of the Royals and Elders. Think of them as our version of the secret service.” DeAnni murmured as each of the Vampiric Guard stepped forward and bowed.“The captain of the Grimlings, Abel Collins his second in command is Welish Barnes. Our first lieutenant Santiago Rodriguez and second lieutenant Quinton Jaxon, they are our enforcers. We call them the jacks of all trades. No matter what the task they can perform it. May I introduce you all to our future vampiric queen and the next vampiric seer, Corriander Brennaur.” Everyone murmured greetings as DeAnni took her seat.Standing next Antonette passed out thick packets. As I flipped through the first couple pages of mine, I was surprised at what I found. The first six pages were pictures of me in various places around campus. I looked up to see everyone studying the photos with great interest, well everyone expects Dominic. Clearing her throat Antonette brought the attention back to her.“As you can see, we aren’t the only ones who believed Corrie to be the next in line. The Renarilo were also there scouting her. We do not understand how they came upon the information or who else knows but I suggest until the Trinity Moon, Corrie is not allowed outside our walls of protection.” Antonette said. I sat there somewhat confused. Staring at one image before me I let my eyes take in everything until I spotted the one person in the photo that didn’t belong. It was then I realize what Antonette was proposing. Raising my hand, I looked to Antonette who gave me a nod to proceed with my question.“A couple questions and I’ll let you get back to your stalker photos one, what is the Trinity Moon? B, what do you mean not letting me leave? Three, what exactly is a seer? And D, what do you mean not letting leave?” I asked. They all gave me the same puzzled look while Dominic glared at me even harder. Clearing his throat Nicholi leaned forward placing his forearms on the table before him.“Well let me see if I can clarify, your Majesty. The answer to question one is this. The Trinity Moon is a time of the year when potential seers and wiccans gain their full power. You right now can see bits and pieces. Once you ascend, you’ll have twenty-four-seven, three-hundred-and-sixty-degree access to your gifts. Next, you are a seer. You can ‘see’ future or past events whether they are bad or good. You are one third of a very prestigious group known as Celestial Ones. Since vampires, wares and wiccans are the eldest of blood lines they each have their own seer. Each seer can do what you do.The only difference is that you can only see events pertaining to vampires. The seer for wiccans sees only for wiccans and the same for the wares. Last, the answers to questions B and D are simple. You cannot exit the secure and safe walls of our little coven. No walks in the park, no movies on the weekend, nothing until it’s safe for you to travel.” He concluded. The smile he started with at the beginning was quickly fading. I could feel Nicolette trying to calm my fear but with a healthy tug I pulled my hand away. Antonette stood across from me giving me such a sorrowful look as if she pitied me. Everyone else looked everywhere else except at me. Pushing the chair back, I stood from the table and planted my hands on the top.“That’s it? I’m stuck here for the rest of my life. That’s your answer?” I asked my voice getting higher with each question. Taking a step forward around the table Antonette raised her hands as if to reassure me.“Not the rest of your life... just until the Trinity Moon.” She replied gently. Nodding I looked to Anton who was having a staring contest with the tabletop to avoid meeting my eyes.“How long?” I asked my voice hard now. I watched him swallow and then look to Scarlett who nodded to him as if giving him courage.“Two months.” He said between gritted teeth. Now everyone was looking at me. I stood there unable to process the information Anton had just told me. I couldn’t live here for two months. Hell, I didn’t even know where ‘here’ was. Shaking my head back and forth I could feel that infamous Brennaur temper rising.“No… no… I quit.” Stepping around Nicholette’s chair I started for the door. I could feel Willow and Greta shadowing my every step.“Be reasonable, you can’t go back to your college dorm and pretend this didn’t happen.” Jorge said as he too stood facing me. Stopping I glared at him then to DeAnni who stood twisting her fingers together nervously.“Wanna bet?” I tossed over my shoulder as I headed for the doors. My dramatic exit was cut short by Welish and Quinton stepping in front of me blocking my path.“I’m sorry, your Majesty. We cannot allow you to leave.” Welish said with a pained expression contorting his features. I tilted my head at them, then turned slowly to Antonette.“Tell them to move.” I hissed trying my best not to explode right there in the middle of the doorway. Shaking her head, Antonette let her eyes slide to Dominic then back. He sat there; his body ridged in his chair grasping the arms causing the wood to splinter at his fingertips.“Only Dominic can order them out the way. He holds rank over all of us.” She said helplessly.“And I’m not about to do that so go back and sit down.” He growled. I could feel the little of patience I had snapping in half. I tried, I really tried to be understanding and hear these crazy people out but there was no way in hell I would let anyone boss me around like that. Whirling around I let my eyes land on Dominic giving him the undiluted version of my anger.“FUCK YOU!! You don’t get to order me around like your pawns here. I couldn’t give a rat’s ass who you people are. I want to leave. I don’t care about your trinity moons, suns, stars, or anything else. You don’t just snatch somebody up and tell them, ‘Oh hey, you’re a vampire queen and oh, you’re never gonna see daylight again.’ So, fuck you, fuck them and lastly fuck this.” I shouted not caring how many feelings I hurt. I’d had enough of this crap.No one saw it coming or even had time to react to Dominic. He was out his chair and across the table within a blink of an eye. His hand was around my throat, his face inches from mine. His fangs looked like to be extensions of his canine teeth; they glistened under the glittery lights of the candles stationed on the walls behind me. Anton and Nicholi were behind him moments later, both trying to pull Dominic back but like said he was the freaking Hulk of the supernatural world. It wasn’t long before I could feel something burning its way through my veins. My anger had triggered something inside me I’d never felt before.“You dare disgrace--” Was all Dominic got out before hitting the marbled floor hard. Grabbing his head, he shuddered in pain. Everyone looked around to one another, confused and somewhat scared. I watched as the invisible threads knotting themselves about his head tightened with each pulse of my anger causing the pain to intensify. He lay on the ground, withering his body convulsing with each throb. I rubbed my throat trying to smooth away Dominic’s fingerprints from my skin as he cried hoarse like screams.I could feel a presence beside me as if it were guarding me. I knew it wasn’t me who was causing this pain but the invisible angel next to me. Slowly I knelt next to Dominic letting my fingertips brush through his hair pulling it from his sweat drenched forehead. Seeing him in such a state brought a smile to my lips. Instead of trying to decode what that meant I focused on Dominic and waited until his green orbs met my hazel pupils. I knew from the way Anton’s body stiffened he could hear the voice inside my head that wasn’t my own. Grabbing Nicholi’s arm Anton pulled him away and forced him to take a step back.“You ever threaten her again Dominic and you will not like what I do to you in return.” I said each word spoken in a voice that wasn’t my own. We stay like that staring at one another until it was too much for him to manage. Tears of blood formed and slip from his eyes leaving red trails down the sides of his face until they met the marble beneath him.“When Nicholi so intelligently explained about seers, he failed to mention an important fact. Seers are descendants of wiccans. Though you are not versed in wicca, you’ve just found this to be true. You threaten a wiccan and the power in her blood protects and defends just like I’m doing now.” As the pain faded, Dominic’s body slowly relaxed, his chest heaving trying to get as much oxygen as he could.“You will not keep her here trapped like a prisoner. She will go back to school and graduate from college. She may see her father, walk in the park, and go to the fucking movies if she so cares to. If you want to protect her, fine. I have no problem with that. What you won’t do is tell her what she can and cannot do while threatening her life. Now that we’ve talked, I’ll leave you here. Corriand knows of what has transpired here today. Do not force me to return again. Do you understand?” Just as quickly the power appeared it disappeared leaving me on my own. Even though it wasn’t actually me I felt power, almost invincible. Standing I looked to everyone, smiling. Nodding to each elder I turned back to Welish and Quinton.“Willow and Greta, if you please?” I said my voice rich with authority. Coming before me they stared the young men down until neither could meet their eyes. Slowly they stepped aside opening the doors. Stepping out in the hall Greta bowed before me. Tossing Dominic one last look I crossed the threshold and exited the room with Willow and Greta trailing after. Inside the room Dominic lay there watching as Anton and Nicholi stepped over him.“I told you to be careful. She’s a wiccan by blood.” DeAnni murmured from the table. Helping Dominic up Nicholi could feel the slight tremor running through his body as if he’d been deprived of food for weeks. He’d never felt such pain in his life.“Welish, could you get wine for his Majesty.” Nicholi said helping Dominic to a nearby chair. Nodding the soldier went to pour a glass.“At least we know she can manage Dominic.” Violet sighed as she stood from the table ignoring Dominic's glaring gaze.“Manage him? She owned him.” Benjamin chortled. Taking the wine glass in hand Dominic downed the entire goblet in one gulp. After placing the delicate glass down Dominic wiped his face and looked back at the smiling faces behind him.“Just shut up all of you.” He muttered.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Erielyn stood on the balcony of her private chambers replaying the conversation over and over in her head. It wasn't long before Aiden found his way in her private chambers. He'd seated himself at the iron table in the corner of the balcony waiting for Erielyn to release herself from her thoughts."She will be problematic. She will not want to release her seat." Erielyn finally said over an hour of silence. Aiden sat still, deep in thought; all he wanted was peace. He was tired of fighting Leticia at every turn."There is little she can do to overturn the decision. Feldaria's heir has been located. It would be suicide to fight against her." Aiden replied. So many scenarios played out in his head. Though there was plenty they all ended the same."You must remember dear brother she has to ascend to gain the power of the first covenant mother. Even if she uses her powers before the ascension, she won’t have enough to protect herself for long. If Leticia somehow hurts her before-hand, she will keep her seat." Erielyn said. Her eyes closed slowly trying to will everything to go right."True, but she is blind to Leticia's eyes. No potential seer can be glimpsed through our eyes. We are even blind to her face until she ascends." Aiden said, standing he came to stand next to Erielyn."I’m worried. I don’t feel calm about this situation, brother. Leticia was known for doing anything to get what she wanted as a wiccan. What do you think she will do as a seer?” Erielyn whispered hugging herself more tightly. Wrapping his arms around her as well he kissed her temple."I suggest we advise the wiccans and wares to speak with the vampires." Aiden said as he himself resigned to the fact he would inevitably have to fight against Leticia."But she will see." Erielyn cried softly. She could feel Aiden's pain weaving into her own. Even though they did not like Leticia, they were connected to her. Her pain was their pain."She will but she will not understand. Advise them to speak in the old tongue. We are well versed in it, but Leticia is not. She won't be able to comprehend their words. It's the only way to make sure Lady Feldaria's heir is protected." Aiden said his voice barely above a whisper. Taking a deep breath Erielyn looked to Aiden's face then the darkening skies."Then we shall proceed."* * * * * * * * * * * * *Leticia sat in front of her vanity glaring at the image in the mirror. A swirling back mass rotated across the glass. It seemed to pulse with each movement. Leaning forward she clenched the vanity top with her manicured nails."You promised she was dead. You said she died in the vampire wars, the same wars that consumed her parents. How is it she is here?" Leticia almost screeched. The pulsing black mass shimmered and a dead voice vibrated through the glass."She survived through the witch's magic. Do not worry, she won't be a problem." The dead voice said. Rolling her eyes Leticia sneered."Are you dumb? It’s already being said she's the chosen heir thanks to that ridiculous prophecy. Erielyn and Aiden are already packing my things getting ready to boot me out of Pelfar because of the glimpses they’ve received. You’ve failed me once already, are you now promising me you'll finish her now?" Leticia hissed. The pulsing black mass shimmered again. The color faded changing from a midnight black to a misty gray."She will be dealt with in time--" The dead voice started only to be interrupted by Leticia's seething tones."Not in time, now! I have glimpsed Dominic performing wedding rites." The smoky mass stilled inside the mirror's frame for a minute before it moved in a swirling motion creating a vortex tornado."Wedding rites?" The dead voice asked. Pushing back from the vanity Leticia began to pacing the length of her private chambers."You of all people should know the prophecy spoken throughout time. He is to wed the daughter of the first covenant mother. They are to take the throne and to unite the bloodlines." Leticia's voiced cracked, her fear spreading through her body causing her body to shiver. Swallowing hard she tried to force herself to calm down. The more she thought about it the more panic seemed to take a hold of her."No, they cannot be allowed to taint the bloodlines." The dead voice sparkled with anger. The tornado on the mirror grew causing the vanity mirror to tremble."He will for he will be with the chosen heir. She will become the next vampire queen thus putting us on the path of destruction if you do not do something about this." Leticia continued. She knew from her past conversations with him through the mirrored glass he wanted Feldaria's heir dead. Though he refused to reveal his reasons he wanted it she knew he wanted it more anyone she’d ever encountered. All she had to do was nudge him in the right places and it would get done. She’d done things, betrayal and mistrust stained her hands from long ago. To keep her position, she had to make sure Feldaria’s heir never made it to her ascension day."Where is she? Have the vampires found her?" It asked, eager to get the latest information."You know I can't glimpse her location. We are blind to potential seers. It is up to you to find her. I will keep you informed of their movements through my siblings." Leticia said while patting her glossy blonde hair back in place. She had to remain calm, or her siblings would suspect things. No one could know of her plans to execute the new seer."Very well." The dead voice said his anger back in check. Smiling Leticia sat back down at the vanity and let her fingers run over the image of the swirling black mass on her mirror."We do not have long. The Trinity Moon will be upon us in two months-time. If she ascends all will be lost to the both of us." Leticia cooed while batting her long eyelashes at the mirror. Slowly the image faded until there was nothing left but gray haze."Then release me so I may destroy her." Tapping the mirror twice it cleared. Sitting back, Leticia smiled at herself in her reflection."I will win this... no matter what the cost."* * * * * * * * * * * * *When I got back to my room, I had Greta help me with the gown and Willow let my hair down. Going to the closet I searched for something regular to put on. I had no idea where they’d put my stuff, they’d packed for me, but I knew I couldn't walk down the street dressed like I would see Queen Elizabeth. When I couldn’t find my clothes I dressed in a light sun dress, sweater, and sandals I found hanging in the closet. Both Willow and Greta watched as I hung the ball gown on the hanger and stuffed it into the closet. Pulling the closet close I went to the bedroom door. Pulling it open I remembered my phone had been placed on the nightstand near the bed. Turning back to get it I noticed I had three missed calls. The first call was from my dad, the next from Aunt Tuny and the last from my mother’s friend Tanyina.‘I bet they’re worried about me.’ I thought to myself as I slipped the phone into one of the pockets of the sundress."Corrie, will you please reconsider." Someone said from the open door. Turning I looked to see Adrian in the threshold wringing his hands nervously. Shaking my head, I went to stand in front of him giving him a gentle smile."I will not be forced to be a part of this game when I didn't ask to be involved. I am not a chess piece to be move about for everyone else's enjoyment. If I wanted to be treated like crap I'd just go back to high school. Queen or not I will let no one not even the high king of all covens of the universe treat me like that again." Stepping around him I walked out into the hall where it seemed like every guard in the coven was station. They watched me walk pass, afraid to stop me but not wanting me to leave. Greta and Willow trailed behind me as I came to a four-way stop. Turning in a complete circle I tried to figure out the way to go but I couldn’t quite remember the way I’d come.‘This place is like a freakin’ casino labyrinth.’ I thought. After five minutes of standing in the middle of the hall I turned to Greta and Willow."Greta, how do I get out of here?" I asked finally admitting defeat."If I tell you, you will leave and if you leave his Majesty will be displeased." She said unsure of what to do. I understood where she was coming from. She was loyal to Dominic and the coven but from her little speech she gave me a little while ago she was also loyal to me. I couldn’t stay here after making that huge scene in the meeting, so I had to fight dirty. Apparently, it was the only way to make anything happen around here. Looking to Willow I let my lips curl into smiled. Seeing this she looked to Greta then back all the while backing away.“Let me ask you guys a question. Who are you more afraid of, me or him?” I asked. Frowning Greta looked to Willow then back to me.“I don’t understand your question.” Greta said nervously. Nodding my head, I gave her a thoughtful look.“Who are you more afraid of, me or him? Yeah, sure he's the vampire king over the universe and he can control the elements with his mind but I'm a wiccan. If I want to, I can turn your bodies inside out just for fun with a snap of my fingers. His elements… can't do shit against me. I could cause you a lot of damage... and pain. So, I ask… who are you more afraid of, me… or him?" They both seem to shrink into themselves as I literally threatened their lives. I watched as Greta looked to Willow and Willow look to Greta."So… how do I get out of here?" I asked again. It only took a second for Willow to grab my hand and lead the way. She moved so fast I literally tripped over my own feet trying to keep up. Everyone we passed was blurs before my eyes. I couldn’t focus to see them because by the time I did they’d disappeared from my sight. Once at a tunnel entrance I paused trying to catch my breath. Looked back I was about to say goodbye to Greta when I noticed the entire coven was watching me, their faces sad at my departure."Please, don't go." Willow whispered. Squeezing her hand, I smiled at her then to Greta. Waving to everyone else I turned around and crossed over the tunnels threshold.Standing on the council chamber balcony, Anton and Nicholette watched as Corrie left. Inside the room Dominic doubled over in pain, gripping his stomach hard."She's leaving." He croaked, his body trembling in agony. Kneeling before him Nicholi tried to ease the feelings overwhelming Dominic, but it was no use. A small puddle of blood formed around his feet. Dominic couldn't believe what he'd been feeling. It was like being clawed from the inside out. With each passing second the pain intensified until he could no longer keep quiet."CORRIE!!" He screamed.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
I stood at the end of the tunnel looking to my left then my right. Somehow Willow wrote on a piece of paper where to go once I’d exited the coven. It said once I made it here, I was to turn left and follow the tunnel until I reached the underground gardens on 57th Street and Bensen. After ascending the staircase, I would be in Midtown. Now I knew where I was, I was ready to get back to my old life of essays, boring lectures, and hostile students but even with all that enticement I couldn't force my feet to move any further. Taking a seat against the tunnel wall I thought about everyone's faces I’d seen once I’d reached the tunnel gates. They looked like someone told them there was no Santa Claus. They had to be realistic. I was no kind of leader.‘How could I be a queen to them when I’m can’t even be a regular person?’ I thought bitterly."What is wrong with you? Just leave, you don't belong here." I muttered to myself. Pushing off the wall I turned towards 57th and Bensen when I felt it shimmy down my spine. Like many times before my eyes blanked out leaving me helpless to whatever wanted to be seen.I thought maybe I was wrong, and my sight came back. Blinking I raised my hand to rub my eyes when I realized I couldn’t see my fingers. The sounds echoing off the tunnel walls weren’t distinct, but I knew they weren’t sounds you hear every day in the city."What in the hell is that?" I whispered to myself moving closer to the sound trying to decipher it. Suddenly shadows appeared along the bricked walls. Large blobs of whatever were coming my way. When it came into view, I took a step back and shook my head. They looked like gremlins or something, but they were massive in size. Their bodies were round like manatees with bulbous heads. They had to have the wingspan of at least twelve feet and from the looks of their claws they didn’t seem like the docile type.As I stood there gaping at the monsters advancing on me a flash of Greta's face appeared. One of those creatures extended its claws and swiped at her. The striking claws cut her in half killing her instantly. I could feel the burning pain of the claws in my chest as more vampiric faces from the coven appeared. As it killed Greta it killed the rest leaving bodies in its wake. As I watched innocent bystanders being killed in front of me the picture dimmed until it faded from my eyes.Even in a summer dress I felt like I was sweltering. I stood there trying to catch my breath when I heard a familiar buzzing sound. It was like the vision had started all over again. Except this wasn’t a vision. This was real. Those things were coming… they were coming here, and they would destroy that coven."No!" I shouted. Turning tail, I ran back towards the coven tunnel entrance. My feet stung as they hit the cement, but I kept going. I could hear the buzzing noise getting louder and louder echoing off the walls. I gave a look over my shoulder and they were there, those things from my vision. I made it back just inside the coven gates with speed I didn't know I possessed. I could feel the words on my tongue. They didn't seem foreign I knew them well. I had to protect them. I needed to protect this coven.“With sky above and ground below, Let this chasm close. Shield my wards from bitter fates. Give me strength to close hell’s gates! Locardiem Esza Suetarium Betapuria Wasic Ubenadia!” I yelled lifting my hands to the ceiling I closed my eyes and let the ancient words roll off my tongue I could feel the power pulsing through me. It felt like I’d triggered an earthquake, the ground jumped back and forth from the movements of the giant metal gates framing the tunnel entrance. I could see the gremlin monster things coming up fast. From the speed they were flying I knew the gates wouldn’t be closed in time. From the corner of my eye Greta and Willow appeared. Without a thought I forced them back behind me.The only other spell I knew by memory that could help was the one Aunt Tuny taught me as a child. Closing my eyes, I concentrated on the area in front of me. I could feel the barrier oozing from my fingertips dripping to the ground. It slithered its way to the gates wrapping around the metal bars sealing itself onto the walls and ceiling.“What’s happening?” I heard someone yell. I could feel their movements behind me, but I didn’t stop to look. I had to stay focused on the barrier. I’d never done a barrier this big before. I knew if I didn’t give it all my attention it wouldn’t hold. At what seemed like three hundred miles per hour the gremlin creatures hit the barrier shoving me back a little causing the barrier to move. I could feel hands on my shoulders and back keeping me steady on my feet.“You are not alone, your Majesty.” Willow growled from my left. One after another more and more gremlins hit the barrier. They fought against it, scratching, and biting at it like the wild animals they were. Like in the tunnels before my vision went dark and I could see a shadow lurking at the 57th Street exit.It peered into the darkness of the tunnel then whirled away as if it sensed me. Within seconds it disappeared into the distance of the vision. I was brought back to the gates, by the clanking sounds the giant iron gates closed leaving the gremlin creatures on the outside still tangled in my barrier.Pulling the barrier down to the ground I forced the edges to curl in on itself. It wrapped on itself encasing the gremlin things inside. I stood tall my chest heaving fighting for breath and slowly made my way to the gates. I watched as the gremlin monsters panicked at the sight of me on the outside the barrier.“Your Majesty, are you all right?” Welish huffed. I turned slightly to see the rest of the Guard and most of the Grimlings had followed him.“Someone was in the tunnels. Someone who did not belong, they sent those things here.” I said while pointing at the trapped creatures.“They’re probably gathering information about you, your Majesty. We’ve never had an attack such as this before you were found.” Greta snarled.‘I’m the reason they were sent here… someone was looking for information about the next seer.’ I thought to myself.“Too bad it didn’t work. Sorry, I can’t let you go back to your master. It’s time to say goodbye.” I spoke. Holding up my arms, I closed my eyes and concentrated. I realized the more anger I felt the more I felt Dominic’s presence. I used the connection between us and called out to the fire in him to flow from him and into me.“Flamenta.” I spoke. The reddish orange flames appeared in my palm then it engulfed my hand and slowly traveled up my arm. I could feel the fire warming me, making me part of it. Once it covered my body, I forced it back into the palm of my hand with just my thoughts. I could feel it condensing and compacting itself. As the fire swirled in my palm I could hear that voice again. It was the same one from before, the angel who lent me her powers. I could feel her power as it surged through my veins making the flames darker and more violent.“Destructa.” We both said. In a blink of an eye the flame flew from my palm and burned the barrier. The gremlin’s cry was like shrieks of banshees. One after other gremlins succumbed to the blazing fire until they were no more. Once the fire had burnt out the barrier slowly dissolved. As it did it felt like what energy I had left disappeared with it.I was so lightheaded I couldn’t see straight. My mouth felt like I’d been sucking on lemon flavored cotton balls. I tried to swallow but I couldn’t. My chest felt heavy, and I couldn’t stop myself from shivering.“Your Majesty?” Abel said while taking my hand. His skin felt like a scorching hot brick oven compared to my temperature. I wanted to move to him and wrap myself inside his warmth, but my feet remained where they were. Looking to him I tried to focus on his face but all I could see were bright lights. I took a step towards him only to take three stumbling steps back.“Catch her she about to faint.” Someone called out. I didn’t see who it was, I’d already gone.* * * * * * * * * * * * *Inside a dark cluttered room, a woman stood hiding inside the folds of her hooded robe. Slowly with a wrinkled skinned hand she pulled her hood back revealing her twisted knots of graying hair. Pushing it back behind her drooping ears she pulled a red crystal from her lobe and palmed it.Taking the tarnish silver hand mirror from her wall she went deeper into the shadowed room. Tapping the mirrored surface with her long-jagged nails she waited for the familiar black mass to appear in the glass reflection.Once she could see the clouds developing inside the mirror’s edges, she took the red crystal and dropped it into a waiting glass of clear liquid. As the crystal sank to the bottom of the glass, she watched it dissolved turning the liquid a reddish black color. Frowning she glared at the glass and the offensive-colored liquid.“Well then was it done?” Asked a dead voice from the hand mirror lying on the hexing table next to the glass.“No... They weren’t able to breach the coven walls… are you sure your seer didn’t alert them of my intentions?” The woman asked as she peered into the mirror’s surface. The swirling mass in the glass lightened. She could tell from the sporadic shifts in color he was trying to control his emotions. The lighter the clouds got the angrier he was.“She wants her dead just as much as we do. We all would profit from the destruction of the chosen heir.” It said its voice somewhat tight. Looking back towards her crystal ball she shrugged off the hooded robes and stood revealing a very slender body wrapped in a tailored mustard yellow gown.“Someone had to alert them. The crystal was burned. If no one gave them warning, why is my crystal burned?” She asked in a seething tone of voice. The swirling mass darkened.“Burned? Burned by what?” It asked. Pointing to her crystal ball she motioned it to her. Swirling gust of air carried it to the hexing table where it hovered until she took hold of it. Placing it on the platform she waved her hands over the top. Suddenly it filled with a green mist.“Let’s see if I can find out.” She said pulling some dried herbs from her hair. Rolling it between her palm brought her hands to her nose and inhaled deeply after allowing the bouquet to saturate her senses she placed it beside the mirror. From her pocket she pulled a short stemmed African violet she’d taken from the underground garden.Like the herbs she inhaled the heavy perfume deeply then laid it on the opposite side of the crystal ball. Closing her eyes, she concentrated on the burned crystal. Placing her left hand on the dried herbs and her right hand on the flower she absorbed their energy.“This is to feel, allow me to see the shapes and forms, now hidden from me. By the powers of Air and three times three, as I will it, reveal it to me.” Fire exploded inside the crystal ball. Pushing back from the hexing table the woman watched as the gremlins trapped inside a barrier burned to ash.She hadn’t noticed tears streaming from her eyes until a tear landed on the smooth surface of the crystal ball. Letting out a gasping cry she pushed herself away from the table. Closing her eyes, she tried to take deep breaths, but all she felt was pain. They were gone. The gremlins… her babies were no more.“What happened? What do you see?” The dead voice asked piercing through her grief riddled thoughts. Looking to the hand mirror she stumbled forward and took it into her gnarled hands.“They were burned alive… burned by an unnatural fire. They were banished from this realm by twisted elemental magic.” She couldn’t help the choking sobs that escaped her chest. She’d raised them as her children. Cared for them, nurtured them. Now they were gone, destroyed by fire created by magic. The black mass inside the mirror had stopped swirling. It sat still inside the mirror’s reflection. A few minutes passed before the crystal ball cleared again. The dried herbs and flower used to invoke the spell now sat as ashes on the hexing table.“Agnes, I would not ask you to continue if you did not feel up to the task. I am only offering this once. Do you wish to proceed?” It spoke. Agnes stood still for a moment. She let her pain filled eyes roam around her tiny rooms. They used to be filled with a beautiful buzzing sound. Her children would fly about and play in the rafters. It wasn’t until they grew too large to come inside did Agnes invest in a new property to keep them safe. Spelling the space with a concealment spell was the only way to keep them safe from the outside world. Now there was only soul gnawing silence.“Aye, I do. No one in that coven has enough power to produce magic like that except the seer. If she wants to play the wiccan by all means, we’ll play. But at end of it all that bitch will burn in the hottest fires of hell if I have any say in it.” Agnes snarled. Tapping the mirror surface, she released the black mass from its confines of the glass. Placing the mirror back on the wall Agnes went to her bookcase and took hold of an old leather-bound book. The spine of it was torn from centuries of wear and tear while the covers cracked and peeled. The pages had turned yellow from age and there was a faint musky odor clinging to the outside leather. Pulling it from its resting spot she placed it on her hexing table caressing the cracked leather with her fingertips.Slowly she opened the cover and a cloud of beeswax and Jasmine wafted into the air. Breathing in the scent of the book she let the smells clear her mind. Flipping through the pages carefully she found what she’d been searching for.‘If the seer wanted magic… I’d give her magic.’ Agnes thought to herself as she placed her palms on the pages of the book. She could feel her power pushing its way through her skin and into the words of the book. Looking towards the tarnished mirror Agnes smiled.“You’ve been without a body for so long. Let’s see if I can’t change that.”* * * * * * * * * * * * *It’s been a while since I performed that mojo that nearly killed me. Can anyone say, let’s not do that again. It’s one thing to let my self-appointed guardian angel do the magic thing but when I threw in Aunt Tuny’s protection spell in the mix I was beyond out of my league. Even though I was almost committing suicide, it was worth it.I couldn’t let anything happen to them. I felt it deep in my soul, I had to protect them. Yeah, so they’re vampires and probably could have handled this without me but I would never change a thing if I could go back. As my Aunt Tuny says, some stupid actions are worth it. But to be honest, it was a stupid action I’m trying not to repeat.“I’m glad to hear you say that because let me tell you, watching you almost die and watching it almost kill Dominic is not something I want to experience again.” Anton said from the fireplace. Sitting up I pushed my hair from my face giving him a smile or somewhat of a smile. It kind of hurt to move my face muscles. My skin felt sensitive like I’d rubbed it raw. Returning my pathetic smile, he came to the bed’s side.“How is he?” I asked. Shrugging his shoulders, Anton took my hand in his. His tepid hand felt even colder than usual.“DeAnni told me to block him out of my head and focus on you. Dr. Kelson said you might need help to get back to the land of the living. Nette’s been with Dominic.” He said keeping his eyes trained off of me. I looked down at our joined hands and noticed Anton’s was shaking slightly. Looking up at his face, I noticed how he kept his head slightly elevated, and his nose turned from me.‘Is this what happens when they’re hungry?’ I thought to myself. I felt Anton’s body stiffen at my thought.“Go eat something.” I insisted. Smiling Anton shook his head, his emerald eyes hardening. I could see the muscles in his neck twitching as he swallowed hard at the thought of blood.“I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.” He said through clenched teeth. Pushing my covers back I swung my legs to the side. In an instant both Willow and Greta appeared from the hall as if they were listening to the entire time.“Just the vampires I’m looking for. Please escort Anton from the room and get him something to eat. Now please.” I said giving Anton a pleasant but firm stare. Nodding Greta took hold of Anton’s hand and smiled up at him. Slipping in front of me Willow pointed to the door.Nodding Anton allowed Greta to pull him away. Sliding to my feet I stretched. It felt like I’d been sleep for decades. My limbs felt awkward and clumsy like this was my first time using my body. Willow stood by with a silk robe in hand. Pushing my arms inside I wrapped the surrounding robe.“Beside Dominic and me almost dying what else happened?” I asked turning to Willow. Kneeling she went to retrieve a pair of ballet shoes that sat beside the bed. Placing them at my feet she stood.“We checked the tunnels like you suggested. There was an unfamiliar scent at the 57th Street exit near the underground gardens. It’s been sealed along with the other side exits. Only five main exits are still open but are under twenty-four-hour guard. The Grimlings are installing finger and biogenetic print scanners at the entry ways, and we should be up by Friday.Everyone will have their fingerprints and blood samples taken to be put in the system. No one leaves unless it cannot be avoided and if you leave you leave with escorts. I was instructed to bring you to the gathering chamber once you’ve woke.” She said heading for the door.Pulling them open she waited for me to ready myself. Taking a deep breath, I nodded giving Willow the go ahead and followed her from the room. Many of the coven were about loitering in the halls pretending to look busy as we walked by. I felt kind of self-conscious with all their emerald eyes on me.I pulled at the robe wrapped about my body making sure everything was covered. I watched them watching me their faces all had the same awe- struck look to it like they’d seen celebrity or something.“Your bit of a hero to them.” Willow whispered. Hero… me? I did nothing heroic. Truth be told I almost didn’t make it back in time to do the voodoo I did so well. But instead of raining down on their parade I returned their smiles ignoring the pinching it cause in my cheeks. Once we reached the gathering chamber Willow bowed then opened the large mahogany double doors. There were various vampires seated around the room in various stages of conversation. Stepping over the threshold I let my eyes wander over the library like room before paying attention to the eyes focused on me. In a headache inducing blur Nicholette, Scarlett and Violet flashed over. I was squeezed in their arms as they each kissed my cheeks.“Oh, thank Heavens, you are all right. Please never do that to us again.” Violet sobbed relieved I was alive. I tried not to wince from the strength of their hugs, but Scarlet could see it in my face. After turning me loose I rubbed my arms while promising not to put myself in danger like that again… unless I had to. Satisfied with my promise they led me to an empty chair. Sinking into the cushion I felt my muscles rejoicing.“How are you feeling?” Benjamin asked from his place at a small research table.“I feel sore and stiff but rested all at the same time with baffled thrown in.” I spoke. Coming from the balcony DeAnni took her seat across from mine. She still looked like Mother Nature personified, yet on the human side. The skin around her eyes was tight, and I could see the tension in her shoulders as she approached the empty chair in front of me.“Baffled about what exactly?” Adrian asked from the other side of the room. Turning towards him I scratched my head. As much as I was happy to be alive there was something bugging me about the entire situation. I kept going over it again and again, but something didn’t add up.“Nicholi said I could see images about vampires. He said that each bloodline had their own specific seer.” Nodding his head Adrian stood and came to stand next to me.“That’s right. You are the next vampiric seer.” He spoke. Looking to DeAnni I frowned. Therein lies the problem.“You said I am to ascend on the… symphony moon, right? That I would get all my special powers after I ascended.” I asked. Chuckling Jorge nodded in agreement.“Not the symphony moon, the Trinity Moon, but still, you’re right. What don’t you understand?” He asked. Standing I looked everyone in the eyes. I knew I wasn’t the only person here who came to the same conclusion. The chain of events doesn’t make sense."If I was a practicing hardcore wiccan, I'd be fine with what happened but I'm not. I only know a few spells, low grade spells at that. How is it I could see those things coming here? Ignore that I'm supposed to be super powerful. How is it I saw them coming and your seer didn't? Adrian just said I'm the next vampiric seer... not the current one. From all accounts she's already ascended with twenty-four-seven, three-hundred-and-sixty-degree access to her gifts. Why didn't she call or text you guys to let you know that this would happen?"
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Ever since I woke from my near-death experience, I’ve been feeling a little different. It’s as though everything around me is clearer than it was before. As promised, I returned to school. The subject of my dorm room was a whole other matter. I couldn’t stay in my old room because it presented too many safety issues so with a little help from the Grimlings I moved out.Although I didn’t want to move out, I really didn’t want to put anyone else in danger… especially with all the Renarilo after me. After three hours of begging, pleading and bribery I convinced Antonette to continue her schooling. I was well aware she didn’t need to go to class but I could tell it made Dominic feel better knowing someone would be close by.Dinners with my dad every Thursday and Sunday nights were the hardest to manage. My father wasn’t an idiot so when I told him I’d moved out of the dorms he became suspicious. I told him I’d moved in with my best friend, Antonette. We agree to split the cost of the apartment and in the long run we’d save money. As supportive as he was trying to be he was like a dog with a bone. He wouldn’t let it go. He kept asking where I was living, where did I know Antonette from, and most embarrassedly when would he get to meet my special guy. The last question is fairly new all because I made the mistake of answering a call from Dominic in front of my dad.He kept sneaking the questions in every conversation we had like he was a government agent or something trying to catch me in a lie. Thank goodness Aunt Tuny taught me the proper techniques in lying to cover my butt. The story was Antonette, and I met at our freshman orientation. We’d become close friends and gotten an apartment. He was happy I was out there being a responsible adult; he was just suspicious about me being a responsible adult. It was Violet who told me to tell my dad Dominic was a guy I met during my online courses. He attends college across the country. That would put a damper on him asking me to invite Dominic over for dinner every time we spoke.Nicholi, being a licensed realtor, had to find us a good apartment to move stuff in because my dad wanted to come over to visit a. k. a check up on us. After he could do his own inspection of the place and neighborhood he calmed down. Not enough for me to relax but I’ll take what I can get.During all this I learned to become superb at multi-tasking. I was a college student by day, cramming for exams, drafting papers, and trying to be normal while in queen training by night. If I thought I had a full load at school my schedule now was beyond overwhelming. It starts off with etiquette classes with DeAnni, ballroom dancing with Anton, history lessons with Nicholette, weapons training with the Guards, hand to hand combat with the Grimlings, speech lessons with Antonette and the all-important patience class. This course really isn’t for me, but I am the focus of it all. It includes me sitting a chair across the ballroom while Dominic tries to not drain me dry. The closer he gets the harder it is to control himself but so far, he’s made it about one fourth of the way. I can see it in his eyes, he really wants to conquer this bloodlust but with Greta and Willow throwing my blood around the room it’s kind of hard to keep that sense of calm. With my new responsibilities Violet said it was imperative I dress like a queen. I thought maybe we’d go hit a few stores but apparently, she had a different idea. We were in the middle of a dress fitting when Welish came to inform me I was needed in the council chambers. I for one was happy for the interruption it meant less time I would be stuck with straight pins by Violet who wanted to clothe me herself.“I was a dress maker in England.” She told her accent giving her an air of authenticity the one time I asked her why she wanted to be involved in the gowns.“I designed Queen Victoria’s wedding gown you know, although many don't know it. I was the one who started the whole white bridal gown trend. Now look at it. Every bride in the world wants a white gown. Heaven knows not everyone should wear one, but it’s their right.” She chuckled sticking me once again with an errant needle. The moment we entered the council chamber I was hit with the aroma of lemons and sweet grass. Standing in front of the fireplace was DeAnni and two others I’d not seen before. The guy looked like he could be a mountain man; muscle and hair were everywhere. It blended perfectly with his pelt vest and leathery trousers. His bare chest and arms bore scars and tattoos from what I guest is not an easy life in the wilderness. His skin was tanned but not too dark, just a hint of color. Even though he looked rough, he was a rugged handsome. He was the guy they wrote about in the romance novels. The reluctant hero who didn’t take praise well and his bark would be worse than his bite. The guy you wanted to come and sweep you off your feet. The woman looked like a pixie sprite. Her long auburn hair reached down to her lower back. It looked like a scarlet waterfall shimmering in the fire light. It fit her pale skin perfectly. Her eyes were the bluest eyes I’d ever seen. A line of freckles marched across her nose and onto her smooth cheeks. With her satiny teal gown glistened over her lithe body she reminded me of those girls in high school who knew they were beautiful, but they didn’t flaunt it.They befriended everyone and always had something nice to say. They stood there watching me as I crossed the threshold. I let my eyes cruise around the room noting all present. Seated in his usually chair Dominic watched me pause at the table. I was happy that though his body was still ridged, his face at least wasn’t twisted up in grotesque snarl.“Corrie, may I introduce Ellis, Alpha Leader of the Wares, and Saraphina, the Tenth Mother of the First Wiccan Covenant.” DeAnni said. Curtsying to them both I gave them my best smile I could muster with Dominic glaring at me. These past few days I’ve been getting more in tuned with my emotions. It was like I had a bunch of colored wires inside my head and each wire stood for an emotion linked to a certain person. The more time I spent with Dominic the more familiar I became with his cobalt-colored wire. So, as I stood there shaking hands with our guest, I felt it before I heard it.“Stop it, Dominic.” I said without turning my head in his direction. Both Ellis and Saraphina looked to one another then laughed. Tightening her hold on my hand Saraphina gave me a warm smile.“I can tell you’re very aware of him, as he is of you. You can tell by the look on his face and your body language, you two are meant to be.” Saraphina giggled a little more causing me to look away. I felt myself growing red under everyone’s eyes. Why did she have to say something like that?“So, you’re the king of wares and she’s the queen of wiccans, what brings you by the coven?” I asked trying to get the attention off me. They looked to one another again then to Dominic who now looked as curious as I was to know the meaning of this visit.“Before we reveal to you our reasons for being here, may I request that all conversation be held in the ancient tongue?” Ellis said his voice sounded like a rich baritone tenor. It thumped its way through my chest rattling a few bones as it went until it crawled effortlessly over my skin. Blinking I swallowed hard then eyed him closely.‘What in the hell was that?’ I thought.“It’s his alpha voice. He uses it when he really wants someone to follow his orders.” Anton said as he and Antonette came strolling into the council chamber doors. Blushing, Ellis gave me a sheepish smile.“Forgive me your Majesty.” He said his voice now regular sounding to my ears. Standing from his chair Dominic came around the table and leaned on the opposite side of me. He looked to be in deep thought when his eyes cut to DeAnni then to Anton and Antonette. I saw each of them give him a tiny nod before he let his eyes travel back to Ellis’s.“Agreed.” He spoke. I stood there wondering what the ancient tongue would sound like when suddenly Ellis spoke. Well, not talking but making a lot of barking type noises that couldn’t possibly real words. I stood there dumbfounded while everyone else nodded their heads and had these genuinely concerned looks on their faces.‘What the hell is he saying?’ I thought to myself. I stood there waiting for something to make sense instead I felt like the idiot child.“Stop concentrating, your Majesty. Stop trying to understand the words and just hear them. You’ll catch on.” Saraphina said when there was a short lull in their conversation.‘Stop concentrating and just hear them she says. Easy for her to say, she already knows the freaking language.’ I thought annoyed. I could see Antonette grinning at me as she listened to my thoughts. Shaking his head Anton tried to keep the smile off his face but it didn’t work. When the conversation started again, I took Saraphina advice and stopped concentrating on the words. I stood there trying my best to just hear them but all I could hear was static. Giving up, I took a seat in one of the open chairs, leaned my head back and stared at the ceiling.“After what happened before we were contacted to come here on behalf of our seers. The situation at hand cannot be ignored or taken lightly.” Ellis said his garble speech sounded somewhat normal. Lifting my head up I looked to group.“They fear for the chosen heir’s safety. They think she is in danger from one of our own.” Saraphina said in raspy like tones.“What are you talking about?” DeAnni said. Her voice sounded like it had been filtered through a drive thru intercom, yet I understood it perfectly.“When they glimpsed her arrival, Lady Leticia was not happy about it. They believe she may try to make sure Corrie does not ascend on the Trinity Moon.” Ellis said while staring Dominic directly in the eyes. I slowly lift my head all the way concentrating on was being said.“But Leticia can’t see Corrie. She would be blind to her. How could Leticia hurt her?” Anton asked his voice sounding like DeAnni’s muffled tones.“She can hurt Corrie by leaking the information to other interest parties that the chosen heir has been found. It's public knowledge that the chosen heir will be with Kristoff’s last purebred descendant and with the Renarilo still running free she is in more danger than ever.” Ellis growled. Standing from my chair I looked at Anton then to Antonette.I thought back to the meeting in the council chamber; the pictures of me in various places on campus, figures in the backgrounds looking very suspicious, the extra shadows and bumps in the night. They feared that this Leticia would tell people about me but honestly, I think she already had.“He’s right you know. They’ve already searched for me at school. It’s like they knew I was there, but they didn’t have a clue who I was. When I think about it now it seemed like they were waiting for someone else to give them the answer they were looking for. They were waiting for you guys to find me and even when you did you weren’t sure I was the one you were looking for. I had to use my gift of sight to prove to Dominic and Antonette I was the real deal. But it doesn’t make sense, the timing is off.” I said somewhat to myself.Everyone stood there slack jawed for a second, surprised I could even understand the ancient tongue let alone speak it everyone except Saraphina. Giving me a wink, her sparkling blue eyes twinkled at me.“Her Majesty is correct. The timing is very off. Lady Erielyn and Lord Aiden have just recently come to discover Lady Leticia’s dislike for her successor. From what she said, she’s been watched long before the seers ever glimpsed her.” Saraphina said. I put my hand on my hip only to yank it away. Damn straight pin. Glaring at Violet I stuck the heel of my hand in my mouth.I could see Dominic inhale deeply and swallow hard, but he didn’t move an inch. Slowly Antonette and Anton stepped in between us creating a wall while Nicholette and Nicholi moved closer to Dominic flanking his sides. We waited silently until his body relaxed before turning our attention back to the conversation.“I guess I should tell you someone was looking for me well before I even graduated high school.” I said trying not to sound weird. That statement caused everyone to stop and focus on me.“What do you mean someone was looking for you?” Dominic ground out his voice sounding strained. I tried my best to ignore it and continue on with my story.“It happened during my childhood. My Aunt Tuny came by our home, in the middle of the night. My dad didn’t know I’d come to the top of the stairs to listen. Just from the sound of her voice I knew something was wrong. She told him I was in danger. That what she felt woke her from her sleep. She’d told him she was physic and that explained her abilities. Dad didn’t believe her at first but when she predicted events after a while he didn’t question her. So, when she showed up that night, he knew it wasn’t a false alarm. He asked who it could be, but she said she couldn’t tell. Aunt Tuny told him it wasn’t the first time she’d felt something like this. She said that it was time she told me about everything going on.The next day my dad dropped me off at my Aunt Tuny’s house and she taught me the protection spell. She told me about the bad feelings she’d been getting. She said it was like someone was trying to use magic against me but couldn’t because of all the protective barriers around me. I thought maybe I’d be safe because of all the barriers but she told me the older I would get the weaker the magic protecting me would become. She had no choice but to teach me the protection spell and afterwards she told me everything she knew except the part about being a seer. She said I had to keep it a secret because we didn’t know who it was wanting to hurt me. It’s why I was so suspicious of you guys. Because of the constant training with Aunt Tuny I could develop my gift of sight.” I explained. After that night, my normal human life came to a screeching halt. There were no more worry-free days where I was just a kid. Every day after school I went to Aunt Tuny’s house to learn how to protect myself from the big bad trying to get me. Back then I resented it but now I’m thankful for all those lessons. Without them I’d been a sitting duck.” I spoke. As everyone digested the bit of information, I’d just dumped on them Saraphina turned and stared at me. Gasping suddenly, she took my hand in hers and kissed my fingers repeatedly.“Please forgive me for not remembering this sooner.” She said bowing at the waist. Eyeing her with suspicious eyes I slowly took my hand back. I know I’m supposed to be all important and what not but that was ridiculous. Looking over at Anton and Antonette I was sure they hear the comments in my head. Antonette’s grin told me so. Turning to Dominic Saraphina bowed to him then to Ellis.“It’s part of Lady Feldaria’s history. Everyone knows Lady Feldaria to be the first mother of our covenant. She was powerful and gifted. That part is public news. What most don’t know especially those not of our inner covenant, Lady Feldaria was not an only child. She had a sister… Angela… Amber… Allison… Agnes! Agnes of Joy was her name. She was Lady Feldaria’s younger sister, also gifted but not like Lady Feldaria. It was rumored that she fell in love with King Kristoff first. He’d not met Lady Feldaria, he only knew Agnes. When he met Lady Feldaria, he’d confessed to Agnes that he believed Lady Feldaria to be his true love. Now we must remember vampires and wiccans could never be, and Agnes who he'd just hurt with his words unintentionally reminded him so.Time passed and Lady Feldaria had become very skilled with her sight. That’s how she glimpsed Miliem's plot against the coven. Agnes told her to leave it be that the matters of vampires had nothing to do with the wiccan world.According to Lady Feldaria’s pendant she couldn’t allow Miliem to hurt and harm so many innocents. She confides in King Kristoff what she’d seen and from there their relationship blossomed. That is how she became with child. She was afraid of the consequences that would come if anyone knew her secret, so she used glamour spells to hide her condition from her covenant but somehow Agnes found out and told everyone. The covenant was unsure about how they felt about this.Lady Feldaria stepped down as Mistress Mother saying she would only return if the covenant wanted her back. A few weeks later they were visited by Lady Erielyn, seer for all wiccans. She told the covenant of the daughter Lady Feldaria would birth. She told them that the child born of a wiccan and vampire would come and bring peace to the world. After learning the news covenant asked Lady Feldaria to resume her duties as Mistress Mother and help lead them on the right path. Months after this Lady Feldaria left with a few of her trust sisters to give birth to her daughter in a secret location. As all this happened Agnes couldn’t believe that the covenant would accept her back after all her clear treason. It was after the birth of the child that Miliem built his army and war broke out.As predicted by Lady Feldaria he looked to destroy everything in his path… even the wiccan who warned the coven of his plans. After the deaths of Lady Feldaria and her child Agnes disappeared. It was said she was heartbroken over her sister’s death, and she couldn't stand to stay but many believed she led Miliem straight to Feldaria because of jealousy.” Saraphina explained.I took this time while everyone was stunned into silence to look around the room and gage everyone’s faces from the news we’d just been told. From the looks on every face in the room not one person here knew that part of the story.“How do you know all this?” I asked turning to Saraphina. Smiling Saraphina pulled a small pendant from under her gown. It looked so familiar it had the same silver crescent moon with ivy leaves circling it resting on a pentagram. It looked somewhat like my Aunt Tuny’s pendant.“I am the Tenth Mother of our covenant. I’m also the eighth generation of my family to serve under the House of Kistarrian. It is Feldaria’s family name. As the Mistress Mother I am privy to all historical information that could help us defend our way of life.” Saraphina said proudly.“So, it’s been Agnes searching for Corrie. She didn’t believe the historians about Lady Feldaria and her infant dying at the hand of Miliem. She of all people knew how gifted her sister really was. If anything, she knew Lady Feldaria did everything in her power to protect her child. She’s the one who’s been searching for Corrie all these years. It explains the feeling Corrie’s Aunt had been getting, it’s how the Renarilo knew where to search. She couldn’t pinpoint Corrie because of the barrier of magic protecting her but she could get a general area.” Nicholi muttered as he moved towards the table. He was right. Agnes survived all these years to find me and to make sure I didn’t ascend. It would be bittersweet revenge to kill Feldaria’s heir. To hurt her and Kristoff like they did her would be the best revenge. Then it hit me if Agnes could use magic to find me couldn’t we do the same?“Could you find her if you wanted to?” I asked. From that impromptu history lesson, I was certain Agnes was the one pulling the strings behind the mutated vampires. Nodding Saraphina looked to Ellis then to DeAnni.“I can. All I would need to do is cast a wiccan call. Even if she doesn’t have a magical link to our covenant anymore, I can still find her through the call. Any potential, current or retired wiccan will hear it. If any are blocking it, we can track them to their location.” Saraphina explained. One minute I was listening to her the next minute I couldn’t hear anything. I could see Ellis say something, but I couldn’t open my mouth to respond. I tried to raise my arms, to move my body but found every muscle locked in place.“Corrie… Corrie…” Violet said waving her hands in front of my face. I could feel it shimmy down my spine prickling my skin like before then my eyes went blank.“Una Flagmento Sessona Pitala Sulphiric Dona.” Pushing off the table Dominic came forward.“What’s wrong with her? What’s she saying?” He asked. Looking to Saraphina, he watched her intently.“She’s invoking a protection spell, but it’s different from anything I’ve ever conjured. She’s using ancient magic.” She spoke. Taking Corrie’s hand in her own she felt the pulse of the power.“Gess Gooda Maskic Phelia Una Promodia Donestia. Because they spy, let them not see. Show them sight of what will not be. Let their eyes be dark and let them be blind. Fill their minds with sightless eyes.” The pulsing power surged through Saraphina's body causing her to yelp at the stinging feeling it left in her hands.“What happened? I can’t hear Corrie anymore.” Antonette asked, nervously dancing back and forth on the balls of her feet. Everyone watched as Corrie stood there stock still. Suddenly her eyes blinked, and her features came back to life.“Merry meet sister Saphinia.” The sound of Corrie’s altered voice caused Saraphina to drop to her knee and bow her head at Corrie who stood there with such a serene look on her face.“Mistress Mother, Lady Feldaria.” Saraphina greeted her back. Taking a step forward, Corrie placed her hand on Saraphina’s bowed head.“Aye, I have not much time to linger. I have a message for Lord Aiden and Lady Erielyn. Humans are her next targets. They mean to start with Corriand’s family. Tanyina of Helen is close with Corriand’s father. She will help you. Do not alert Corriand of this. Blessed it be my sister Saphinia.” Just as sudden Feldaria appeared, she was gone. Stumbling back, I grabbed my stomach and groaned in pain.“Oh, God… I’m gonna be sick.” I gasped. Taking my shoulders in her hand, Scarlett directed me to the nearest chair. Pushing me slightly she made me put my head between my knees.“Sit. Take slow breaths.” She whispered while slowly rubbing my back. I sat like that for moment before slowly sitting back up.“What was that?” I asked. Still kneeling Saraphina smiled at me.“Mistress Mother Feldaria embodied you for a moment.” She explained. Moment, that wasn’t a moment. Snorting I rolled my eyes then quickly wished I hadn’t done that. The rolling of my eyes triggered another wave of nausea that caused me to lower my head once again.“It felt like a year.” I moaned at the unpleasant feelings coursing through my body. Rubbing my shoulders Scarlett kept telling me to breathe in slowly when she paused.“Why did she call you Saphinia?” Scarlett asked. Giving her a hand, Ellis helped Saraphina stand.“Saphinia is my ancestor’s name. She was one of a few who left with Lady Feldaria to give birth. It’s said I resemble her greatly though I don’t think we look much alike... well, I have orders from my Mistress Mother. Once I’ve returned to the covenant, I shall cast a circle and send out the wiccan call.” She spoke. Nodding to us all she headed for the doors. Bowing Ellis smiled.“I too must take my leave. I have arrangements to make with Lord Aiden. A pleasure meeting you, your Majesty.” He spoke. With that they were gone. I sat with my head down for a few minutes mentally praying that Feldaria didn’t do that again. Though it was nice to know who my guardian angel was I’d rather not her take over my body again. That was a roller coaster ride I’d rather avoid. All the while I was dealing with my outer body experience, I could feel the mood in the room change. There was a static electric charge that went through me causing me to look up at Dominic. He stood there his jaw clenched again. His nostrils flared and body tense. Taking a step back, he swallowed hard and closed his eyes.“Anton, DeAnni, Benjamin and Jorge, please escort Corrie out of here now. Nicholi, Adrian, Antonette, and Nicholette make sure I don’t leave this room until she is safe in her bedchamber.” He growled his body now visibly shaking.Wrapping her arms around my shoulders Scarlett picked me up and whisked me through the door with my escorts trailing behind. Violet was the last to leave, she stood at the doors watching Dominic as he gripped the table with both hands and gasping for air.“For what it’s worth, you did a great job Dominic.” Violet said then closed the doors behind her. Coming up beside Dominic Antonette gave him a slight punch in the arm.“She’s right. You did wonderful. You lasted a whole seventeen minutes longer than you did in patience class.” She said proudly. Letting his eyes cut to Antonette’s cheerful smile Dominic grimaced.“I want you to sound that pleased when I’m ripping off your arm to get to her.” He muttered grimly. Grinning now, Antonette giggled at his pouty face.“Oh, silly Dom, you would be decapitated before you even finished the thought. I would never let you harm my queen.” She said reassuringly. Relaxing his fingers from the table Dominic slowly stood up right and took a calming breath.“Decapitated huh? Well, if she’s so important what am I chopped liver?” He asked. Antonette stood there tapping her index finger against her chin pretending to think it over. Shrugging her shoulders Antonette shuffled towards the doors and leaned against them heavily after catching the end of Dominic’s train of thought.“Well, you’re my king and that makes you important too, but she’s a descendant of Lady Feldaria and the next seer. As much as you don’t want to hear it, she kind of outranks you… sorry.” Antonette said, her eyes twinkling with laughter. From her chair Nicholette raised her wine glass in the air as if she were giving a toast.“Antonette’s right, she outranks you.” She hiccupped. Glaring at Nicholette then to Antonette Dominic sat in Corrie’s vacant seat. He could hear Antonette trying to keep her giggles down to a minimum, but they still escaped through.“Shut up the both of you.”
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
After another hour of torture, I could get dress and escape Violet’s straight pins and tape measures. I almost went through an entire box of Band-Aids because of her and her ‘help.’ She said I should be more thankful that she’s such a skilled artist and I'm lucky to wear her creations. Instead of bursting her bubble I kept my mouth closed. No need for her to know the truth. I was placing the last Band-Aid when she left me to order the fabric for my glorious new gowns. After that traumatic experience I’d opted not to return to my own rooms due to sheer boredom, so Scarlett invited me to her own private rooms. It was a medium sized office decorated in only what can be described as Scarlett fashion. It held no rhyme or reason; it was just there. I was lying on a plush rug flipping through some of Scarlett’s fashion magazine when I realized something.“Scarlett?” I asked still flipping through the pages.“Yes, my Queen?” She answered intent on her crossword puzzle. I paused in mid turn of the page when I looked over at her frowning face.“Um… can you not call me that?” I asked. Just the title Queen sent chills down my spine. I’d only gotten used to the title your majesty. I didn’t think I was ready for queen. Looking up from her newspaper she tilted her head at me her beautiful dark tresses framing her oval face making her emerald eyes seem large and translucent in the soft lights of the chandelier. As she sat there, she frowned at me even further placing her paper down she sucked her bottom lip into her mouth giving me a pouty sigh. Great, now I’ve hurt her feelings.“I apologize.” She murmured sounding almost like child. Sitting up I pulled my legs under me until I was seated Indian style on the colorful mosaic printed rug.“No, don’t apologize. I know you guys are all about formality here, but I haven’t turned into a queen just yet.” I said trying to dig myself out of another hole I created with my big mouth. The frown quickly disappeared, and a small smile appeared at the corners of her mouth.“Actually, you were born a Queen. You haven’t ascended the throne.” Scarlett said matter-of-factly. I guess I never thought about it that way.“Really, are you sure?” I asked. The look on Scarlett’s face told me she found this conversation to be very comical.“Yes, really, I’m sure. You are King Kristoff and Lady Feldaria’s heir. They themselves were royalty within the supernatural realm. They were a King and Queen of their own kind.” She spoke. Tossing the magazine aside I gave Scarlett my full attention.Ever since this little journey began, I’ve had a lot of some questions on my mind. With everything going on there’s never been time for me to sit down and ask anyone. Hopefully today I’ll get answers to make sense of all this madness.“As you know Lady Feldaria was a wiccan. She was the first covenant mother but not the first of her kind. King Kristoff is the youngest child born to the prince of the last dynasty. King Kristoff was the only purebred born, so he inherited the title as king.” Scarlett said as she placed her crossword puzzle away. Nodding my head, I waited for her to continue on with the story but when she didn’t, I scooted a little closer.“How did they have a child together?” I whispered. Raising her brow at me she grinned.“What do you mean by that? They had you the normal way one has a child.” She spoke. What did she mean the normal way? I didn’t know being a vampire was normal.“No, I mean Kristoff was a vampire. That meant he was dead, right? How can dead people reproduce?” I asked exasperated. Scarlett looked like I spit at her feet. I mean honestly it was a good question.“King Kristoff was not dead.” DeAnni said from the doorway across the room. I didn’t even hear her come in. My hand went to chest and my head whipped around to face her.“DeAnni, please don’t do that. Popping out of shadows is not cool!” I exclaimed. Coming into the room DeAnni went to the empty sofa and graceful sat down tucking her legs under her she leaned on the arm of the sofa.“Forgive me. I thought you knew of my presence.” She murmured.‘How was I supposed to know of a vampire sneaking up on me?’ I thought.“I dare say she was distracted.” Scarlett giggled as if she too could hear my train of thought. Swallowing hard, I looked back at Scarlett then to DeAnni.“Yeah, I was. Now back to you, what do you mean he wasn’t dead?” I asked getting us back on track with our earlier conversation. DeAnni sat there for a moment staring at nothing in particular then she sat up straight looking all regal and important. It looked like she was trying to figure out how to explain this.“Let me start from the beginning. There are two types of vampires recognized in our supernatural world. The first are purebreds and the second are halflings. Most vampires when they transitioned wake as halflings. If we all could be purebred, we would but a last we cannot.Even from the beginning there were few purebred vampires in the world. Some like our first King Alaric transitioned into a purebred. It’s still unknown how and why it happened. Even with his journals we cannot figure out the exact cause. Then you have purebreds born like King Kristoff. Because purebreds were so far and few between, he hoped that when he created the Vampire Kings one would transition into a purebred, but no one did. Some centuries passed, and he almost gave up hope when Lady Feldaria came with news. She’d foreseen a human that would be transitioned into a purebred vampire. By that time Miliem was planning his betrayal--” DeAnni said, but I was still stuck on the purebred and halflings. I guess the look on my face gave me away.“I take it you haven’t read the books Nette gave you.” DeAnni inquired giving me a disapproving eye. Giving her an exasperate look I shook my head.“Of course, I haven’t, this is the only free time I’ve had since almost dying. I’ve been in queen training with Nicholette and Adrian. Then it’s meetings with you and the Elders. Dress fittings with Violet and meeting the coven with Anton and Nicholi. I have classes, homework, and dinner with my Dad, so he won’t get suspicious. Essays and Midterms while trying not to get killed by crazy killer vampires.I haven’t had time to breathe let alone read a twenty-inch-thick book about vampire history, the dos and don’ts and little-known facts.” I spoke. Scarlett had placed her hand over her mouth, but it didn’t muffle the snorts that were escaping.“I told you guys we should have made that thing into an audio version. It would be so much easier.” Scarlett coughed trying not to laugh directly in my face. DeAnni looked to be doing a better job than Scarlett was, but you could still see her mouth twitching.“All right, Scarlett you can take care of that until then I’ll give Corrie the crash course. You are Lady Feldaria’s heir.” DeAnni said. I was waiting for some kind of declaration that would be life changing. This…. this wasn’t it.“I know that already.” I said patiently. Sitting up all the way DeAnni looked me in the eyes her emerald gems into my hazel ones. Okay this was it. I could tell from her intense stare my mind was about to be blown.“No, you are Lady Feldaria’s heir her actual heir.” She spoke. What in the hell is wrong with her? She sat there with this knowing look on her face and I was just as confused as ever.“DeAnni, you said that.” I said annoyed. Coming to the carpet Scarlett took my hand and waved towards DeAnni.“She means you aren’t a descendant like everyone believes you are. You are the reincarnation of Lady Feldaria’s first born child.” Scarlett explained. Okay there’s the declaration that would change my life.“What?” I spoke. Coming to the carpet also DeAnni gave me a gentle smile.“When Lady Feldaria saw Miliem’s plans she warned the covens. Then she saw the outcome of her actions. She knew Miliem would blame her and King Kristoff for everything and what better way to get revenge on your creator then to kill his love and his child. Lady Feldaria cast a spell, a strong spell taking your soul and hiding it in time.” DeAnni explained. Wait…“She killed me with magic?” I asked.“No, not really.” DeAnni said. Looking to Scarlett for help she motioned her to say something. Shrugging her shoulders Scarlett chuckled.“Yeah, she did.” Scarlett said. Giving Scarlett a frown DeAnni continued on with her story.“Anyway, because that spell took all she had, she was left defenseless when Miliem came. He killed the infant he thought was you and killed Lady Feldaria.” She finished.‘Okay… I wasn’t killed once but twice in one lifetime. Oh, that sucks.’ I thought to myself glumly.“King Kristoff hunted Miliem down while the rest of the coven destroyed his army. It was King Kristoff who killed Miliem.” Scarlett said.“Lady Feldaria had no means of telling King Kristoff any of this, so he mourned the loss of his love and his child. He sorts of… faded. He became a shell of himself. A few years passed with King Kristoff keeping himself in seclusion it wasn’t until Dominic was transitioned did King Kristoff decide that he did not wish to live any longer.” DeAnni finished. It sounded like something Shakespeare would write, one of his infamous tragedies.“How do you know this, and he didn’t?” I asked. Stroking my hand, Scarlett smiled.“After the war was over the covenant told us what happened. Lady Feldaria’s pendant conveyed all that happened. From it they learned that Lady Feldaria used every ounce of magic she had to keep you safe.” Scarlett said‘She used every ounce of magic.’ I thought.“She wanted to protect you for as long as possible.” DeAnni said. So, I wasn’t a descendant. I’m her child… her extremely old child. I couldn’t help but giggle at that. Even with everything Scarlett and DeAnni told me it still didn’t tell me how I came to be.“So let me get this straight. Kristoff was a purebred vampire which means he isn’t technically dead, but he really isn’t alive either. Because of it he could father me with Feldaria… yeah, I still don’t understand because he’s a vampire and not alive.” I spoke. I sat there staring at the both of them trying to make sense of what they were telling me.Nodding DeAnni drummed her fingers along her thigh. Her delicate brows furrowed as she tried to produce a way to explain this. She sat there for a minute before Scarlett lit up.“Okay I think I can explain this to you. Anton told me he explained to you it takes more than just biting a human for them to transition into a vampire, right?” Nodding I watch Scarlett stand and go to her overcrowded bookcase. When her delicate fingers pluck two dolls from its shelves other trinkets tumbled over. Pushing it back onto the shelf Scarlett came back and dropped back into place onto the floor next to me.“The process is simple. When Anton made me, he bit me injecting my human tissues with what we like to call venom, in reality it’s nothing more than our saliva having vampire DNA but since saliva sounds… gross we call it venom. The venom has two jobs. One, paralyze me like Novocain so I don’t feel a thing and two kills off my living human cells so they can start the transition.” She said positioning the dolls, so that one was biting the other. It looked more than weird but strange enough I understood it.“While the venom is doing its thing Anton would drink from me while I drank from him. It’s kind of like switching blood, we call that the blood exchange. Because I was taking Anton’s life force or blood he would need to feed to survive. When a vampire drinks human blood the venom in our bodies changes the human blood into vampire blood. Once the venom has finished killing off all my living human cells the blood from Anton would jumpstart my body like re-animation.” She spoke. Even though the dolls held a touch of weird to them, they helped.“So, you’re a purebred vampire too?” I asked. Sighing Scarlett stood and put the dolls back on the shelf.“No, I wasn’t that lucky like DeAnni said purebreds are rare. The blood jumpstarted my dead human cells but not my dead human heart. Only purebred vampires have beating hearts. It’s like being a super advanced version of a human. They can do everything a human can, get sick, have children, and stuff like that. Halflings hardly ever get sick, and we can’t reproduce. Dominic is the only purebred vampire in the world right now that’s how rare they are.” Scarlett said swirling around from the bookcase.“All purebred vampires are royalty because of King Alaric and Queen Matilda. As they ruled so shall future descendants.” DeAnni said pushing herself off the floor. Giving me a hand, I stood.“So, because I’m the daughter of Feldaria and Kristoff… I’m royalty and that makes me special.” I spoke. Twirling around me Scarlett spoke in a sing song voice.“Your fate is tied with Dominic’s. King Kristoff and Lady Feldaria were supposed to be the Vampire King and Queen, but Miliem’s death squad happened so Lady Feldaria fixed it for you and Dominic to take their places.” Scarlett said. Well, that made sense. Looking down at my hands I frowned. How was I supposed to be a queen and seer at the same time?“What about being a seer? I thought that was important too?” I asked unsure how everything would work out. Coming to a stop Scarlett smiled.“Well, seers weren’t known until after Lady Feldaria’s death. We thought it was an ability all wiccans had, but it seems only a few is privy to this gift. You being the next seer really isn’t a problem.” Scarlett said. From what Anton has told me about seers I doubt Dominic would let me leave to go be a seer while he’s stuck here. How was this going to be worked out?“Why?” I asked.“Once you ascend on the Trinity Moon your sight will expand.” DeAnni said matter-of-factly. Just when it all made sense there, she goes talking gibberish again.“Expand?” I asked.“You’ll be able to glimpse images about every supernatural creature in this realm. You’ll be the second Lady Feldaria. Then when you transition into a vampire your job as seer will be over.” Scarlett said. I know I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, but this was ridiculous.“Wait, what do you mean transition into a vampire?” I asked. They both looked at me like I was a slowly losing my intelligence.“Exactly what it sounds like Corrie. You’ll perform wedding rites with Dominic because you’re destined to be his mate. Then you will be bitten by him starting the transition. Once the transition from wiccan to vampire is complete, you’ll wake as a purebred vampire for Lady Feldaria has foreseen it happening.” DeAnni explained. As I stood there listening to DeAnni talk about my untimely demise I think my heart stopped. Just like that it started up again, beating erratically.‘I’m having a heart attack. I can’t breathe… Oh GOD I can’t breathe!’ I screamed in my head.“Hence the title you’ll have Vampire Queen. Once you are fully transitioned, Lady Erielyn will find another seer.” Scarlett said as if she was explaining how, one gets four from two plus two. Waving her hand in my face DeAnni whistled.“Corrie… Corrie, Are you all right?” DeAnni asked. I stood there like a bump on a log. I could feel my body slowly going numb. They want me to transition into a vampire… are they crazy… they have to be crazy if they think that’s happening.‘Well, you should ask them are they crazy.’ My conscious said. It was right I should. Turning to face DeAnni and Scarlett I stared at the both of them.“Are you crazy?! I’m not turning into a vampire! There will be no wedding rites, no biting or drinking. You said be a seer. I can do that. You said nothing about me dying!” I screeched. How could they be cool with this? This is not cool by any definition.“Your Majesty--” Scarlett started, but I whirled away. They were not talking me into this.“Hell no, I’m not doing it!” I shouted over her words. There had to be another way. There had to be some kind of loophole I could squeeze through to make transitioning not happen. I cannot be a vampire… that can’t be happening.“Corrie, I know--” DeAnni tried to comfort me but really what was she going to say. For all I know she volunteered to be a vampire. There was probably a sign-up sheet or something. She did it of her own free will. Me… I was being pushed in headfirst without a helmet and no net to catch me. The more they tried to tell me that this was for the best the angrier I got.“No, you don’t. You know nothing. You snatch me up, tell me I’m royalty. I’m so freaking special cause I can see stuff. A crazy vampire army is after me; but you say you’ll protect me. I’m like cool. Then you say I’m destined to be with Dominic, it’s written in the stars. Now I’m some witch lady’s dead baby back from the grave and I’m supposed to marry Dominic, die yet again and reign as your dead queen. No, thank you. I’ll be leaving now.” I shouted heading for the door. At that exact moment I wanted out. I wanted out of that room, out of that coven, and out of this bad dream.“Your Majesty--” Both Scarlett and DeAnni screamed after me as I continued down the corridor and to the steps leading to my rooms. This other worldly fairytale had just turned into a nightmare… it was sooo time for me to wake up. I wouldn’t be lulled into dying for anyone. I didn’t ask to be a part of this cult. As I stomped away, I yelled over my shoulder.“I’m not your Majesty. I’m not your Highness. I’m not your Lady, your Grace or anything like that. I’m not a Princess, your heir, or your Queen. You can have your dresses back and your imperial jewels. You can keep all your fancy perks because I’m leaving. Find another queen because I ain’t doing it.” I yelled rounding the corner when I heard Scarlett cry out in pain. Yeah, it hurt… no it more than hurt. I could feel it. She was distraught by my words.“Corrie!” DeAnni called out again. I had to be strong. I may have had a crappy life, but it was mine to live. Live being the operative word. I’m only eighteen for heaven’s sake. What is wrong with these people? I’m fascinated by the other world but I’m not about to let some guys kill me to join them there… I had to think about my dad… my Aunt Tuny, my family. I was all they had left. I refuse to leave them. Even with all my cool abilities I was human first. I’ll always be human first.I must look like hell on a difficult day because everyone scattered at the mere sight of me. I didn’t stop long in my room, Willow and Greta stood silent as I gathered my things for the second time. I didn’t ask for directions out. I knew it by heart. When I picked up my bag, I noticed both Greta and Willow had one of their own.“We’re coming with you.” Greta said. I didn’t argue there was no use in doing it. Nodding I went on with them shadowing me. As we went up the stairs to the finger and biogenetic print scanners I looked back at the balcony of the council chamber. There he stood. I could feel his worry, his sorrow, and his pain. Swallowing hard, I placed my finger on the reader. It took only a second for it to acknowledge me. As the doors unlocked, I closed my eyes. I could hear his voice in my head.‘Please… wait… don’t go.’ It felt like someone was ripping out my heart and punching it for fun. In the brief time I’ve been with him there was a connection. Each passing moment it became stronger and stronger until it was second nature for me to think of him. As much as I would love to be with him I could not and would not leave my family behind. This by far is the most difficult decision I’d ever made in my life.“Goodbye.” I choked out and with that I was gone.
