The ship’s engine hummed a steady, familiar rhythm as Owen sifted through the seemingly endless stacks of files and reports cluttering his desk. The sheer volume of paperwork never ceased to amaze him.“Hey, Grady!”The voice snapped Owen from his task, prompting him to set down the folder he was holding. He looked up to see one of his crewmates standing in the doorway.“What’s up?” Owen asked.“Captain wants you in his office in five,” Peterson replied.“Do you know what he wants me for?”“Nah, he just said to come get you.”“Alright, five mikes?”“Yeah.”As Owen made his way down the ship’s narrow corridors, his thoughts wandered to his most recent mission. He couldn't recall any mistakes or actions that would necessitate a talk with the Captain. When he first joined the Navy, he was fresh out of high school, with no real prospects for what he wanted to do. He’d started off in a marine animal program, before becoming a SEAL when he was 21. Now just three years later, he leads his own platoon standing as Lieutenant Commander. His first promotion had come early, a result of his innovative research on sea lions, which had been celebrated at a small ceremony at Coronado Naval Base.Owen approached the hall leading to the Captain's office and taking a deep breath, he knocked on the already open door.“You wanted to see me, Captain?” Owen asked, unsure of what he’d be hearing.“Grady! Glad you’re here. Calm down, you’re not in trouble or anything,” Captain Reece started, leaving Owen to give a visible sigh of relief. “I just got off the phone with Vice Admiral Cooper, and he’s told me that he needs a guy who’s done work in animal research that he can trust. He’s specifically asked for you.”“Me? It’s been a while since I’ve done stuff that involves animals. What's special about me?”“Well, I don’t know, but he asked for you. I’m just the messenger,” Captain Reece replied, before starting again. “The Navy will be loaning you indefinitely to work for this company: InGen. You ever heard of ‘em? They do stuff at Jurassic World.”The news hit Owen with profound gravity, stirring a whirlwind of emotions within him. Excitement surged through his veins at the prospect of not just seeing the dinosaurs, but working with them. To see the very creatures that ruled the world 65 million years ago. Mingling with his excitement, he felt a strong sense of nostalgia. It had been a few years since he last worked with animals, and the thought of the emotional bond brought a smile to his face. Sure, it was a daunting and potentially dangerous task, one that would put his skills, knowledge and courage to their limits, but deep down, Owen knew this chance would be the highlight of his career. This was his moment to leave a mark, to leave a legacy that would echo through the annals of history.“Dino island? I’ve never been there, and certainly never heard of InGen. What do they want me for?” Owen responded.“The Navy’s partnering with them, to research some dinosaurs, kind of like the same way you did with your sea lions. I don’t know much else. You’ll be the lead of this project, but you’ll be reporting to Commander Lenihan on the Navy side, and a dude called Vic Hoskins will be coordinating with you from the InGen side. He’ll probably be in charge since InGen are the ones giving you the animals and whatnot on this project. You leave Friday when we dock in San Jose, and you’ll be briefed by Commander Lenihan when you get on the island.”The hustle and bustle within the offices of Jurassic World was a familiar symphony to Claire, now in her fourth year there. She had started as an intern, before the park even opened, being chosen by Simon Masrani himself, and after graduating at the top of her class at Stanford, Masrani had offered her a full-time place as the park’s Junior Asset Manager.Claire refreshed her emails one last time, then rose and headed to the control room to do one last round, before meeting Masrani for their scheduled meeting. As she left her office, she nodded at Zara, telling her to hold her calls until she got back.“Lowery. Any updates?” Claire asked the moment she entered the control room.“No significant ones since your last visit. Just the usual—few guests at the infirmary for heatstroke,” Lowery responded, his tone as casual as ever.“Alright, and live count?”“Just in the low fifteen thousand.” Came Vivian this time.Amidst the chatter of the control room, the air traffic control's radio crackled to life, announcing Masrani’s imminent arrival.“Inbound chopper, Jurassic One. ETA, 5 minutes.”As Claire made her way to the elevator that led to the helipad, she threw the empty coffee cup she was holding, before smoothing out her skirt and heading toward the stairwell. Making her way to the edge of the path that led to the helipad, she waited for the loud telltale sound of a helicopter's rotors to get closer.Once the helicopter touched down, Claire approached, watching as an aircrew member opened the door to reveal Masrani's ever-present grin.“Mr Masrani!” Claire greeted, with a feigned sense of excitement.“Claire. How’re my animals doing?” Came Masrani.“Well, we don’t have a way to measure their emotional experience,” Claire began, attempting a diplomatic response.“Sure you do. You can see it in their eyes, right?” Masrani countered with a wink.“Of course,” Claire replied, matching his smile as they made their way toward his office.Their conversation shifted to small talk as they navigated through the busy hallways. Finally, Masrani got to the point..“So, Claire, the reason I’m meeting you today is because we are starting a new project, and I want you to lead it. I think it’s time that our Junior Asset Manager gets to manage some assets on her own.”“What’s this project for, sir?” Asked Claire.“Well, we are partnering with the US Navy and InGen to run a research project for velociraptors, and while we have an InGen representative, I want you to oversee it all, for me.”“I didn’t know we bred velociraptors, not since the original park, though.”“Yes, that is correct, but this project will be separate from the park, and you will be representing Masrani Global, rather than Jurassic World. However, you will still be in the role of Junior Asset Manager. The navy men will be arriving on Friday afternoon, where we will hold a first meeting and a project brief.”Claire’s pulse quickened, with excitement and apprehension. The past four years of her career have led her to this moment. Four years of hard work, hours of overtime, the pure struggle of climbing the pyramid of a male-dominated hierarchal corporate world. An amalgamation of dedication and expertise led her to finally be entrusted with a pivotal role, and certainly one that builds careers. The magnitude of the endeavour sent a surge of adrenaline through her veins, mingled with a sense of pride at the recognition of her capabilities. Yet, beneath the surface, there lingered a flicker of self-doubt, a whisper of imposter syndrome in the face of such a significant responsibility. However, she pushed aside those insecurities, determined to rise to the occasion and prove herself worthy of the faith placed in her."Wow, sir. I-... Are you certain you want me to take on this project?" Claire's voice wavered slightly, betraying the tumult of emotions swirling within her. The weight of the responsibility bore down on her shoulders, threatening to crush her confidence. "It seems... daunting, to say the least."Masrani offered a reassuring smile, but Claire couldn't shake the gnawing sensation of doubt that gnawed at her resolve. "Claire, you've proven yourself capable time and again. I have every confidence in your abilities," he replied, his tone gentle yet firm. "You'll rise to the occasion, I'm sure of it."With a hesitant nod, Claire forced a small smile, though her heart hammered in her chest. She knew she had to push past her insecurities and seize the opportunity before her, but the fear of failure lingered like a shadow, threatening to engulf her aspirations.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Owen stepped off the ferry and inhaled deeply, the scent of the island's lush vegetation filling his lungs. Adjusting his cap, he ignored the curious stares from tourists, aware that his Navy uniform made him stand out. His current duty status required him to remain in uniform, a constant reminder of his responsibilities. Before he realized it, an employee was ushering him away from the crowd of eager tourists. He looked up and saw his destination—or rather, who he was heading toward. There stood a man dressed in similar camouflage, though he wore a black t-shirt with "IBRIS" printed on it. Owen was puzzled; he had never encountered this term in his Navy tenure. When he reached him, he dropped his duffle bag onto the ground and saluted the man, before receiving one back, and introduced himself.“Lieutenant Commander Grady. I take it you are Commander Lenihan?”"I am, indeed. Welcome to Isla Nublar. I’ll be here for the next week to set up and get IBRIS going, but you can contact me anytime regarding the project."“IBRIS?” Owen asked, his confusion evident.Lenihan gave him a questioning look as they climbed into a nearby SUV, staffers loading Owen's gear into the trunk."They didn’t tell you? The IBRIS Project—Integrated Behavioral Raptor Intelligence Study. I’ve reviewed your work with sea lions, and I see why they chose you."“Wait. Raptors? I thought this was just a fun little stint with some dinosaurs. Didn’t I hear that they were in the original park, caused some chaos?”“Yes, raptors. And ‘chaos’ is putting it mildly. Statements from Doctors Grant, Sattler, and Malcolm indicate that raptors are incredibly dangerous, not just because they’re wild carnivores, but due to their intelligence. They communicated, hunted in packs, and Dr. Grant suggested they might be smarter than humans.”“Wow,” Owen trailed off, “I don’t really know what to say. So what exactly will I be doing?”“Well, Grady, you’ll be the lead researcher and behaviourist on this project. We want you to assess the intelligence of these animals and their potential military applications. Pretty much what you did with the sea lions but with raptors,” Lenihan explained. “There’s a briefing this afternoon. First, we’ll get you settled in your accommodations.”“Understood, Commander,” Owen said.“Oh, and clean yourself up. I don’t want you representing the Navy looking like a sack of potatoes with a belt,” Lenihan added with a chuckle, prompting Owen to grin. Stepping out of the car, Owen noticed a man waiting by the trunk with his luggage. The place seemed to be the island’s hotel, bustling with families, milling about.“This way, sir.” Owen turned to see a man in a white and blue collared shirt, with the Jurassic World logo adorning it.Following him into the hotel, Owen held his duffle in one hand, taking his cap off with the other. They stopped at the front desk of the hotel, as the man started talking to one of the receptionists. Owen looked around and noticed that the lobby looked like it had come out of a rich man’s imagination. It exuded luxury, with opulent decor that clearly reflected the "spare no expense" philosophy of John Hammond and applied to not just the animals, but the rest of the island by Simon Masrani.“Sir, this will be the keycard to the room where you will be staying,” The man started, causing Owen to quickly turn back around to look at him, “While it is within the hotels, it is in the staff sector, separate from visitors.”Owen followed the man’s eye line, leading to an elevator which was closed off by security gates that required a scan from a valid pass to enter.“You will be able to get through those using this keycard, and if you happen to lose it, come down to the reception and we will sort it out for you. Your room will be on the fifth floor, as seen on the room number on your keycard - 528, and you will be situated in room 28. I have also been informed that there has been a package left for you there.”Taking the keycard, Owen headed toward the elevators that would lead him to his new home for the foreseeable future. Hearing the beep and seeing the green light on the door handle, Owen pocketed the keycard and pushed the door open. Calling this a "room" was a gross understatement; it was a sizeable apartment, especially for one person. Sunlight streamed through the large floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a warm glow over the living room and making it even more illustrious than necessary. The view outside took Owen's breath away—Jurassic World in all its glory, a scene that seemed to have sprung from the imagination of Christopher Nolan’s dreams.Unlacing his boots, he left them by the door, alongside his cap and duffle, before walking through the apartment, exploring his new home. After walking around the entire apartment, he came to the conclusion that he didn’t think he needed that many TVs. To say that he was more than happy was an understatement. He’d spent most, of his adult life living aboard a ship that would cram a bunch of fully grown men into a single room. While he was in the bedroom, he saw a desk, and atop it, was a somewhat large cardboard box, with a note stuck to it:LCDR Grady,
Some stuff to get you started here on the island.
The ID will be mandatory during work hours, and when off duty, will allow you into employee-only buildings. There’s some other stuff in there that you may need or want, and of course, in one of the wardrobes, is an iron - Expectations are still high even though you are now on an island.
Have fun and good luck,
CPT ReeceOwen rolled his eyes at the iron comment, as he took a blade out of his pocket and began to cut the box open. Inside, he found his ID, adorned with the picture taken at the ceremony of which he was most recently promoted; he also found some information about the island, with maps alongside it. In a separate bag, there were what looked to be shirts, with similar printing to the one Commander Lenihan was wearing earlier. Most of the supplies within the box were nothing special, save for a phone, laptop and a note with Commander Lenihan’s contact details and where he needed to go for the meeting that afternoon. Lastly, he found keys to a jeep, tagged with the number 491, which Owen took to assume as where it would be parked. After unpacking his belongings into the apartment, Owen changed out of his uniform, leaving it on the bed for later. Glancing at his watch, he realized that he had a few hours to spare before the meeting. Deciding to explore, he headed down to the hotel to familiarize himself with his new environment. Claire groaned in frustration after hanging up the phone. Her day had been chaotic with preparations for the IBRIS Project, and she didn't need Dr. Wu adding to the complications with the unborn raptors. Finally being able to catch a break from the sudden extra workload, she decided to head back to her office for her lunch break, but not without stopping by her apartment to grab the notes she’d forgotten on her kitchen counter that morning when she was rushing out to meet Commander Lenihan.Quickly firing a text to Zara letting her know she’d be back soon, she heard the elevator doors open and she stepped forward, before she knew it, she hit something, and it was not the elevator. Looking up from her phone, she realized she’d walked into a man. He looked to be about 6 foot 2, tanned skin, with a ruggedly dishevelled demeanour, all while sporting a neatly trimmed stubble and combed hair. His sharp green eyes revealed a startled look."Oh, I’m so sorry," Claire blurted out, still recovering from the unexpected encounter, as the man simultaneously apologized.Cringing at the awkwardness, Claire quickly stepped into the elevator, watching the man walk away as the doors closed.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Alongside Masrani, Claire was one of the first to arrive. She recognized Commander Lenihan from their meeting that morning and went over to greet him.“Commander Lenihan, nice to see you again,” Claire said, shaking his hand.“Nice to see you too, Ms. Dearing. And please, call me Justin.”“Of course, Justin. Mr Masrani and I will set up first while we wait for everyone else to arrive. Please, feel free to take a seat.”Nameplates were neatly laid out on the large conference table, and Claire decided that she would also take a seat. Better to write emails sitting than standing, she thought to herself. Claire found that rather than be seated next to Masrani, her nameplate was next to yet another navyman, Lieutenant Commander Owen Grady. As she drafted yet another email, she put her phone down as the seat beside her was filled. She looked up to see the man whom she’d bumped into earlier and felt her cheeks redden as she recognized him. No longer dressed in the t-shirt and jeans she saw him in earlier, now in his uniform, he greeted her.“Hi, I’m Lieutenant Commander Owen Grady. Nice to meet you. Again.” He grinned smugly, extending his hand.Claire gawked as she shook his hand. “I’m Claire Dearing, Asset Manager in charge of this project. Nice to meet you too.” She tried to maintain her authority and composure despite her embarrassment.“Says here that you’re Junior Asset Manager,” Owen said, pointing at her nameplate.“That doesn't make me any less of your boss, Mr. Grady,” Claire said, wiping the smirk off his face.
Finally, the room filled up, and Masrani, ever hospitable, introduced everyone. “...and last but not least, Junior Asset Manager Claire Dearing. She will be overseeing the entire project on my behalf, so all reports and requests will go to her.”Upon her introduction, Claire gave a little wave to the room before sitting down and allowing the meeting to begin.“As we all know, the IBRIS Project is about researching the intelligence of velociraptors. Thanks to Dr Henry Wu, InGen, we are waiting for the first raptors to be born since the original park, which are due any day now. Thanks to the US Navy reaching out to us with the unpublicized reports of events from the original park, we were able to come to a deal, where our collective efforts can effectively research the reliability of these animals in the field.”
As the meeting concluded, Commander Lenihan took Owen aside, where a man stood waiting.“Grady, this is Barry Sembéne. He’s been working here for the past couple of years with various carnivores. He’ll be your assistant animal behaviourist and guide for the island.”Lenihan gave Owen a pat on the shoulder before turning to leave.“Hey, man. I’m Owen. So you’ve worked here a few years. What’s up with the redhead?” Owen asked, getting straight to the point.“That’s Claire Dearing. She’s been here since before the park opened and was chosen by Masrani himself. I don’t know her very well, but around here, people call her an ice queen.”“So she wasn’t just a bit of an ass to me then.”“From what I know of her, I wouldn’t say she’s rude or mean. Just cold, sometimes. You must’ve said something to her. The InGen guy from earlier, Vic Hoskins, likes to test her limits all the time. The guy’s bad news. He’s the only one with the balls to treat her like that.”“Well, she bumped into me at the hotel earlier, and I thought it’d make a neat joke, but it didn’t land,” at that, Barry raised his eyebrows, “Hey. Do you know if she’s single?”“Frérot, she’s our boss.”“Won’t you even let a guy try?”
Barry drove the two back to the hotel after a few more meetings and left Owen his number before leaving him to his own devices. Drying himself off and getting dressed after his shower, Owen sprawled out on the bed and turned on the TV.It had been a long day of meetings and paperwork, making his old desk job pale in comparison. Tedious was one way to describe it. While he was excited to be working with animals again, Owen forgot what it took to be signed on in the first place, let alone lead. He had to come up with a training program, checkpoints, and milestones, and plan all the logistics. To make matters worse, no one had ever worked with velociraptors before, making it all the more difficult.Meeting Claire had been interesting, to say the least. He certainly hadn’t expected the oddly flustered woman who ran away from him to be his new boss, but he’d taken a liking to her and became intrigued.Owen switched off the TV, the room falling into a serene silence. His thoughts drifted back to the fiery redhead he’d met earlier. Claire Dearing. The name resonated in his mind. She had a strong, authoritative presence, yet there was something about her that seemed... guarded. That brief encounter in the elevator replayed in his mind, a stark contrast to the poised professional she was in the meeting."Junior Asset Manager," he scoffed lightly, remembering her correction with a smirk. "But still my boss. Go figure."He felt a spark of curiosity and determination. There was a challenge in her eyes, a defiance that mirrored his own. It had been captivating and frustrating all at once. Their brief conversation had left him with more questions than answers, but he sensed there was more to Claire Dearing than her icy exterior."She's definitely more than meets the eye," he murmured, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He admired her dedication and drive, traits that he found attractive. There was a spark in her that made him want to push her buttons, to see that fire again.Owen made a mental note to observe her more closely in the coming days. Not just because she was his superior, but because there was an undeniable pull—an urge to understand what made Claire Dearing tick. He looked forward to working with her, to peel back the layers of her tough exterior.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
“...and this here, will be your new office. We’ve got some basic stuff set up for you, and I understand that you were given a laptop, which I think should be connected to the network with the rest of the computers here.” Came a technician, showing Owen the new facilities, built specially for the IBRIS Project. As he trailed behind the technician, weaving through the sleek corridors of the facility, he found himself surrounded by a symphony of advanced technology. The walls hummed with the gentle thrum of machinery, and the soft glow of monitors bathed the space in an ethereal light. Every corner seemed to pulse with the energy of innovation, leaving Owen feeling as though he had stepped into the world of Blade Runner.Despite the technician’s efforts to guide him, Owen’s attention wandered, captivated by the sheer magnitude of the technological marvels that surrounded him. Each piece of equipment seemed more impressive than the last, a testament to human ingenuity and progress. Yet, amid the wonderment, a sense of apprehension gnawed at Owen’s Confidence. This new environment was a far cry from the familiar surroundings of his previous postings. The advanced systems and cutting-edge facilities left him feeling out of place, like a relic from a bygone era struggling to find his footing in the modern world. The weight of expectation bore down on him, a constant reminder of the challenges that lay ahead. But amidst the uncertainty, there was also a profound sense of pride. This wasn’t just a new assignment; it was the culmination of six years of unwavering dedication, pain, and relentless pursuit of excellence within the Navy. Every late night spent putting together reports on sea lions and writing up recalls of events after operations. Lives saved, due to not just himself, but his leadership and the steadfast courage of his platoon. Nights where he tossed and turned, closing his eyes and not just seeing, but reliving the battlefield. Each memory. Each scar. Etched into his being. A constant reminder of the sacrifices he’s made and the toll taken; a reminder of why he needs to keep going. Yet, despite the lingering shadows of Owen’s past, he carried on, using it as a tool, rather than his kryptonite. Driven by a sense of duty and determination, Owen steeled himself, to make a difference, not just to himself, but to the world in this new chapter of his career and life.Moving through the facility, Owen’s thoughts moved with him, shifting from his past to his present circumstances. The weight of his sacrifices and the memories of his experiences still lingered, but it drove his determination, as he gazed upon the futuristic equipment and observed the bustling activity around him. He reminded himself that he wasn’t alone in this new venture. The Navy had entrusted him with this important project for a reason, and he owed it to himself and his comrades to rise to the occasion. As they were concluding the tour, he felt his phone buzz in his back pocket and stepped into his new office to answer. As Owen answered the call, a rush of excitement surged through him at the sound of Claire's voice. There was something about her that stirred his emotions, igniting a spark of attraction he couldn't ignore.“Good morning, Mr. Grady,” Claire's voice flowed through the line, her tone carrying a hint of warmth that sent a shiver down Owen's spine.“It’s Owen, first of all, and Claire? How did you get this number?” Owen replied, his curiosity piqued.“Well, let's just say I have my ways,” Claire teased, her voice tinged with amusement.“Oh, I see,” Owen quipped, unable to resist the opportunity to flirt. “I guess that means you've been thinking about me, huh?”Claire chuckled softly, but her response was firm. “Actually, Mr. Grady, the phone you're using was provided by me for Project IBRIS purposes. So, let's keep our communications strictly professional, shall we?”Owen's heart sank slightly at Claire's response, realizing that his attempt at flirting had fallen flat. But he quickly regained his composure, masking his disappointment with a playful tone. “Got it, Claire. Strictly business it is. But hey, a guy can dream, right?” he said, injecting a hint of lightheartedness into his words."Absolutely, Mr Grady," Claire replied crisply, seamlessly transitioning back to her professional demeanour. "I'm calling to inform you that there have been some developments with the raptors. It seems they may hatch sooner than expected, and we need you in the lab to oversee the preparations."Owen nodded, his mind shifting gears from playful banter to the gravity of the task at hand. "Understood, Claire. I'll head to the lab right away.""Good," Claire acknowledged, her tone brisk and efficient. "I'll see you there shortly, Mr. Grady."With that, they ended the call, and Owen made his way to the lab, his thoughts now fully focused on the imminent arrival of the raptors and the responsibilities that awaited him.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Owen stepped out of the jeep and squinted into the bright sunlight. The lab compound was a stark contrast to the dense, green foliage of Isla Nublar. Military precision met cutting-edge science here, and Owen felt a mix of curiosity and unease as he took in his surroundings. The hum of generators and the distant calls of exotic birds added to the sense of otherworldliness.Dr. Henry Wu was waiting for him at the entrance to the lab. Wu, the lead geneticist on Project IBRIS, was a man of few words and intense focus. Owen had read his file—a brilliant scientist with a vision that curiously blurred the fenced line between intense enthusiasm and obsession."Welcome, Mr. Grady," Wu said, extending a hand. "I trust your journey was uneventful?"Owen grasped it, noting the firm grip."As uneventful as it gets around here," Owen replied, shaking his hand. He followed Wu through a series of security checks, each door requiring multiple levels of clearance. The final door hissed open, revealing a sterile, white lab filled with high-tech equipment and bustling technicians.Standing near the observation window were Claire Dearing and Vic Hoskins. Claire gave Owen a brisk nod, her professional demeanour firmly in place. Hoskins, on the other hand, exuded impatience, his arms crossed and a smirk playing on his lips."We're about to witness something extraordinary," Wu said, leading Owen to the large observation window. Beyond the glass, five large eggs lay in an incubator, their surfaces glistening under the lab lights. A team of scientists was gathered around, monitoring vital signs and adjusting instruments."These are the first of our Velociraptor specimens," Wu explained. "Genetically engineered to be more intelligent, more responsive. This is the culmination of years of research."Owen nodded, trying to mask his skepticism. He had seen his share of experimental projects in the military, and they rarely went as planned. But the sight of the eggs, the possibility of new life, stirred something in him.As they watched, one of the eggs began to move. The rugged surface erupted with fine fractures that soon faulted the entire egg. The scientists leaned in, their faces a mix of anticipation and anxiety. Hoskins edged closer, his curiosity evident."Looks like it's time," Owen said, feeling a strange mix of excitement and dread. The crack widened, and a small, clawed foot poked through. The room was silent except for the soft, rhythmic beeping of the monitors. Inch by inch, the creature emerged, covered in mucus and membrane. It was tiny, and fragile-looking, but there was a fire in its eyes that spoke of survival."Specimen D9," Wu announced, noting the time and details on his tablet. "This is our first success."Owen watched as the newborn raptor struggled to stand, its limbs awkward and unsteady. He couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for the creature. It was alone, the only survivor of its batch.Hoskins took a step closer, his eyes fixed on the raptor. "Look at that," he muttered. "Amazing.""Step back, Hoskins," Owen said firmly, moving to position himself between Hoskins and the incubator. "It's crucial that I'm the first thing it sees. The imprinting process depends on it."Hoskins scoffed, his expression incredulous. "Come on, Grady. It's just a lizard."Owen's jaw tightened. "It's more than that. If we want to train them, they need to see me as their alpha. Now, step back."Claire shot Hoskins a warning look. "Listen to him, Vic. This is important."Reluctantly, Hoskins stepped back, his eyes still fixed on the raptor. Owen knelt down beside the enclosure, his movements slow and deliberate."Hey there," he whispered softly, extending his hand. The raptor's eyes locked onto his, a curious intensity in their depths. Owen could see the intelligence there, the spark of something extraordinary.D9 made a small chirping sound, an instinctual call for comfort. Owen gently touched the creature's snout, feeling the warmth of its breath. "I'm here," he said soothingly. "You're not alone."The raptor nuzzled against his hand, its tiny claws grasping at his fingers. Owen smiled, feeling a profound connection form. This was no ordinary animal; it was something more, something special. The weight of the responsibility settled heavily on Owen’s shoulders, but it was accompanied by an unexpected warmth. In that moment, he felt an overwhelming sense of protectiveness and awe. Here was a creature, engineered in a lab, yet full of life and potential. The tiny, fragile being in his hands was a testament to both human ingenuity and the resilience of life itself.Owen's heart swelled with a mix of emotions—pride, anxiety, hope. The raptor's vulnerability mirrored his own experiences, the battles he had fought, and the scars he carried. He saw a fighter in D9, a spirit that refused to be crushed by circumstance. As the raptor's eyes locked onto his, Owen made a silent vow. He would be there for this creature, guide it, protect it, and, in turn, learn from it. In D9's eyes, he saw a reflection of his own journey—fraught with challenges but brimming with possibilities. The bond forming between them was unspoken but profound, a promise of loyalty and companionship. Owen knew that this was just the beginning, but in that fragile, precious moment, he felt a glimmer of something he hadn't felt in a long time: hope.Wu observed from the other side of the glass, making notes on his tablet. "The imprinting process seems successful," he remarked. "D9 is responding well to your presence."Owen continued to interact with the raptor, letting it explore his hands and face. He spoke in a calm, steady voice, reinforcing their bond. "D9," he repeated softly, "you and me, we're going to do great things together."As the minutes passed, Owen felt the weight of his responsibility grow. This was his mission now, his purpose. To guide these creatures, to understand them, and to unlock their potential. He exited the chamber, his mind already racing with thoughts and plans. This was just the beginning. There would be more challenges, more raptors to imprint on. But in this moment, there was hope. Owen stepped into the common area of the lab building, his mind still buzzing from the experience of seeing D9 hatch. Comfortable chairs and sleek tables were scattered around, and a few InGen employees milled about, chatting and sipping coffee.Barry was waiting for him near a large glass window that offered a panoramic view of the island. They exchanged a quick, familiar handshake before settling into a conversation about logistics."We need to make sure the new feeding schedules are synchronized with the next few batches," Barry was saying. "If the raptors don't get their meals on time, it could disrupt the training."Owen nodded, his thoughts momentarily focused on the practicalities of their work. "Got it. I'll make sure the team is on it. And we need to double-check the security protocols. The last thing we need is one of them getting loose."Barry chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Always the cautious one. I'll handle the checks, don't worry."As they spoke, the door to the common area opened, and Claire Dearing walked in. Her presence was immediately commanding, her professional demeanour evident in every step. Barry noticed her before Owen did and gave his friend a knowing smile."Looks like you have company," Barry said, nodding toward Claire. "I'll catch up with you later."Owen turned to see Claire approaching, her eyes locking onto his with a mix of determination and curiosity. Barry excused himself with a quick nod, leaving Owen and Claire alone."Good morning, Mr. Grady," Claire said, her voice carrying the same crisp efficiency as their earlier phone call."Claire," Owen replied, his tone light and teasing. "I told you, it's Owen."Claire's lips twitched in what might have been the beginning of a smile. "I wanted to discuss the logistics for the upcoming raptor hatchings."Owen leaned against the nearby table, crossing his arms casually. "Sure, what's on your mind?""We need to ensure the temperature and humidity levels in the incubators are perfectly regulated," Claire said. "Any fluctuations could jeopardize the development of the embryos.""Already on it," Owen replied, though his mind was only half on the conversation. He couldn't help but notice the way Claire's hair caught the light or the determined set of her jaw. "I've got the team double-checking everything."Claire nodded, clearly pleased with his response. "Good. And we need to update the contingency plans. If anything goes wrong, we need to be prepared to act quickly.""Absolutely," Owen agreed, though his mind was wandering. He wondered what Claire was like outside of her professional shell, what her interests were, what made her laugh. "I've been running simulations to cover all possible scenarios.""Excellent," Claire said, her eyes meeting his briefly before she looked away. "It's important we stay ahead of any potential issues.""Always," Owen said, his tone a mix of sincerity and playful flirtation. "But you know, Claire, you can call me Owen. Mr. Grady makes me feel like my old man."Claire's expression softened for a moment, but her professionalism quickly reasserted itself. "I'll keep that in mind, Mr. Grady."Owen sighed inwardly but didn't press the point. "So, how about we grab a coffee later and go over these plans in more detail? Maybe somewhere with a view?"Claire gave him a measured look, her eyes betraying a hint of amusement. "Let's keep our focus on the task at hand, Mr. Grady. But I appreciate the offer."Owen grinned, unfazed by her response. "Fair enough. But if you ever change your mind, you know where to find me."Claire nodded, her demeanour once again shifting to business. "I'll keep that in mind. Thank you for your time, Mr. Grady."He tried one last time, his voice softening. "You know, Claire, we're on this island together for a while. We might as well get to know each other. As friends."Claire paused, her eyes meeting his with a mixture of consideration and guardedness. "Perhaps," she said finally, her tone neutral. "But for now, let's stay focused on our responsibilities."Owen nodded, appreciating the small opening. "Of course. Just know that I'm here if you need anything, Claire.""Thank you, Mr. Grady," she replied, turning to leave. As Claire walked away, Owen watched her go, a mixture of admiration and determination in his eyes. He knew breaking through her professional exterior would take time, but he was willing to be patient. For now, the raptors and their development were his primary focus, but the prospect of a deeper connection with Claire lingered in the back of his mind, adding a touch of warmth to his otherwise challenging days.Owen leaned back against the table, his thoughts drifting. He had been on the island for only a few days, but his interactions with Claire had already become a highlight. There was something about her—her sharp intellect, her unwavering dedication to her work, and the way she managed to command respect without raising her voice. Every encounter left him wanting to know more about the woman behind the professional facade. He couldn't deny the growing admiration and intrigue he felt. It was unexpected, almost surprising how quickly his thoughts had started to revolve around her. Claire was unlike anyone he'd met before, and he found himself looking forward to their conversations, even the ones laced with her subtle rebuffs. Each one was a challenge, a puzzle he was eager to solve.Owen's mind wandered back to their interactions, replaying her smiles and the rare moments when her guard slipped just enough for him to catch a glimpse of something softer. He wondered what it would take for her to see him as more than just Mr. Grady, the sleazy navyman loaned to InGen. He wanted to know what she was passionate about outside of work, what made her laugh, what her dreams were.He shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. For now, he had to focus on his responsibilities with the raptors. But he couldn't help but hope that, in time, Claire would see him as more than just a colleague. Until then, he'd continue to be patient, chipping away at the walls she had built around herself. It was a challenge he was more than willing to accept, and as he headed back to the lab, the thought of Claire added a new layer of purpose to his mission on the island.
