Work Text
Sam felt deja vu as he heard the high pitch cries of a five year old. Calling for her dad. Then her mom.
And despite said five year old knowing that her parents are out on a "date" tonight, she still calls her them. Which is understandable though.
"I'll check on her." Sam says. He untangles himself from Will on the couch."I'll be here when you back."
He stands up and heads to where she's sleeping— in Sarah's old room. Still painted a baby blue. But the posters of 2000s heart throbs are long gone. Now there's family pictures. Glow in the dark stars on the ceiling. And toys everywhere. It may be a guest room, but she's really the only guest that stays there.
"Hey, sweetheart." Sam knocks on the door.
"Grandpa!" She sits up in her bed.
"Could i sit?" He points to the open space on her bed.
"Yeah,"
He sits next to her, on her pink comforter and wool blanket. It gets cold these days.
"What's wrong?" He asks. Reaching out to smooth her tangled bed head.
She does the same to him. Leaning forward to put both her hands on his face, petting his beard. It makes Sam chuckle.
"I can't sleep," She says.
"Ah. But it's..." He checks his watch. "Nine. We put you to bed an hour ago."
She drops her hands from his beard. Frowning. "I... I tried counting sheep... Tried closing my eyes."
"Didn't work out?""Nope,"
Sam sighs. "But your mom won't be happy with me if I don't get you to bed."
"But- But I am in bed..."
"Bad choice of words, kid. I meant I need you to go to sleep."
She pouts. If she were Sarah and this was over thirty years ago he would have told her (nicely) to go to bed. But he's off the clock now, so he doesn't need to be as strict.
"Tell you what. You can come watch a movie with me and Grandpa Will until you fall asleep."
"Okay!"
So she does. She jumps out of bed. Then she follows Sam to the living room where Will is patiently waiting.
When he hears tiny footsteps on the hardwood, he turns to the hallway.
"Hey! Why are you up, kiddo?"
"Grandpa said we can watch a movie to help me fall asleep."
"Woah. He said that?"
"Yeah!" She smiles.
Will helps her up onto the couch. She settles in between Sam and Will.
"What do you wanna watch?" Will grabs the remote.
"Cars!"
And Sam is horrified at the image of talking cars, but whatever. At least she didn't say Rookie of the Year for the millionth time. She really takes after Will, somehow.
Samatha eventually falls asleep, as planned. Sam might've not have always been the best father during Sarah's upbringing, but he still knows a thing or two.
They give it a few more minutes until Will picks her up and carries her into her room. She stirs a little when she gets put down in the bed, but she doesn't open her eyes.Quickly, her breathing evens out, and she's out like a light again.
Sam watches from the door. He leans against the doorframe. His heart aching in a good way.
He watches as Will bends down. Pushing her dark bangs away from her forehead. He presses a light kiss to her forehead before standing up.Then he pulls the blanket over her sleeping form. And for a moment Sam forgets how to breathe entirely.
Will turns to Sam. They lock eyes. Even in the dim light, Sam can still see Will's gray hairs at his hairline. Crows feet surrounding his brown eyes. A reminder of how long they've been doing this. How long Sam has known him. How long he's loved him.
But when Will steps forward, he whispers:
"Why are you giving me that look?"
"This is how I always look at you."
"No. It's not."
Sam steps forward this time, grabbing Will's arm, bringing him closer. Will tilts his head. Their lips slot together. Practiced and easy.
They've been doing for about a decade now, after all.So Sam kisses him gently; and Will happily kisses him back.Hopefully Will understands what Sam is trying to convey when he can't manage to say the words. This is far from the first time Sam's felt like this. But something about tonight feels different.
Sam goes in for another kiss before hesitating. "Let's get out of here. We don't need to scar our granddaughter." He whispers.
Will nods, but kisses him again. Light and chaste, for good mesure. They both grin into the kiss.Yeah. Their grandkid. What a thought.
Sam lets Will leave the room first while Sam shuts the door as quietly as he can. Will immediately grabs his hand though, leading him further down the hall. Far enough to where Samatha won't hear them.Sam gets pushed against the wall. His husband's hands at his shoulders. And Sam looks at him, eager to kiss that soft look on his face.
Oh... and Sam could die right now. Right here. And he would be a happy man. Content under Will's touch.
