The first time River is in Sam’s room, she looks at the flag on the wall and does a double take. In sharpie, on the bottom of it, in what she’s pretty sure is Abigail & Sebastian’s handwriting, are little notes of congratulations and encouragement.“Wait, you’re trans?”Sam swallows. “Uh, yeah, why?”“Me too!”“Wait, really?”River raises her eyebrows and crosses her arms. “You think my parents just. Named me River?Sam shrugged. “They did in Doctor Who."“Funny you should mention that...”“Seriously? River Song?”“She’s cool! My favorite bisexual.”“What about Captain Jack?”“He’s pan.”“Good point. Jack’s pretty, though.”“That he is," agrees River, nodding. "Also, technically they named her Melody.”“Spoilers!”“You haven't-- the show’s been out for a decade, Sam. How have you not gotten to that part yet but you know who River is.”Sam shrugged. “Sebastian made me watch it.”“You play ttrpgs with them. Weekly.”“Well, I never said I didn't keep watching it.
