How had it come to this? The war had ended with Kaguya sealed and Madara defeated, the Shinobi world maintaining an alliance for a more peaceful era. All Sakura had wanted was to find Sasuke after all these years and build their relationship together. Just like everyone else in Konoha was doing.Yet here they were, fighting against a large group of rogue shinobi with strange transformations. These beastly transformations that could suck the chakra right out of a person without the need for hand signs. They had an advantage for a time but once she was separated from Sasuke the drainers had her cornered. Her seal was drained, her chakra low but she kept fighting until they had gotten the best of her. She wasn’t even sure how it happened.Seeing Sasuke’s Susano’o in the distance, she knew he was alright. Her eyes slowly started to close, tears forming. Her wound in the stomach, shoulder and leg was bleeding furiously. She wasn’t suppose to die, not like this. She was the student of the fifth Hokage, a part of the legendary team 7 and a medical prodigy. As her body began to run cold, the sound of the battlefield erupting in chaos began to fade. Sasuke had come, but it was too late.
“Sa… suke.” Her final tears fell before she no longer breathed. Everything felt empty. As a void. There was nothing but a cold chill all around her. But how was that when she did not feel her body? Something was stirring her consciousness.
“If I do this she will not be a part of your world anymore. Her body has already been properly buried.”
A voice. A familiar voice. But from where had she heard it.
“You, too, feel this way?”
Everything felt foggy, nothing but darkness around. She wanted to open her eyes but there was nothing to open. She yearned for answers but could not move to speak.
“I understand. For what she has done to save this world, I will allow this one boon.”
Boon? What kind of boon? And who was this person talking too?
“Sakura Haruno shall be reborn in another world. A second chance at a life she lost too early.”
Everything enveloped in white all around her. Her senses began to return. Sakura groaned at the pounding headache. The light spilling in from the opened curtain did not help. Her body felt weak as if she had no energy to lift her head and her stomach ached severely, yearning for food or water. A knock on the door roused her further. Sakura lifted herself with every bit of energy she could muster, holding her head.Ino’s perky voice boomed through the door. “Sakura! Breakfast is ready. Come on girl, you really need to eat this time.”With sudden realization, Sakura looked around frantically. She was in a bed room with white walls, a mural of pastel flowers behind her painted on the wall, a full sized bed that had a pink headboard, a fluffy blanket over her and white pink sheets and pillow cases. There was a desk with books and papers messily scattered across it. There were clothes scattered all over the room and an open closet near the door.Memories flooded to her instantly. The times she was with Sasuke traveling, the run in with the drainers, the battle, and eventually her death. Sasuke was able to find her, that much she knew but everything faded after that. Was it a dream? Or did she get home? She heard Ino, so she had to have but this place was so unfamiliar. Did she have amnesia and not remember what happened after that? She heard a ding and looked to the side table next to the bed. The alarm clock showed the time being nine in the morning. A small device next to it was lit for a moment before fading. She grabbed it and pushed the buttons on the side and it lit up again, a picture of her, Ino and Tsunade together displayed. This was not her home. The two women in the picture looked like her friend and mentor but something was off about them. When looking closer at herself, there was something off. She held her head, trying to ease her headache. But as she tried to summon her chakra, nothing happened. She swiftly threw the covers off of herself and ran to the door, opening it and finding her way down the stairs. Once downstairs, she took in the surroundings of the house. To her left was a door and across from it was a kitchen where Ino was. Her hair up as usual but her attire was strange. She wore a blue silk thin strapped top with matching short shorts. “What has you so spry today?” Tsunade said from the other side. Sakura looked to the right and saw a table with a few chairs around it. There was already a few plates set with food on it. Tsunade sat near the window of the humbly decorated room, already eating. She wore a white tank top and gray sweat pants, her hair in a high pony tail similar to Ino though her bangs framed her face as always.“Where are we? What happened?” She asked carefully.Tsunade stopped picking her fork up and looked at her, thinking for a moment. “Home I’m pretty sure.”“What had happened was, Tsunade got extra drunk last night and made the mistake of texting Jiraiya,” Ino laughed walking out of the kitchen with a plate full of cut up fruit. “Come sit. Eat for once.”Sakura followed her to the table, sitting across from Ino and setting the device on the table. She looked down at the plate of rice and eggs. Her mouth watered at the site and her stomach growled from hunger. In that moment, whatever was happening did not matter. The food and juice in front of her was all she wanted. She immediately started eating, trying to pay attention to the conversation that continued.“I made a mistake. Leave me alone,” Tsunade warned in a non threatening way.“You sent him boob pics,” Ino pointed out, causing Sakura to start to choke on her bite.“Slow down, I know you haven't eaten for awhile but don’t inhale your food.” Tsunade shook her head before looking back at Ino. “And yes I know. I am still getting messages from him this morning.”As they went back and forth, Sakura finished her food. She looked between the two trying to take in the sudden change within them. Their demeanor and attitudes were so different compared to what she was use to. And to hear Jiraiya’s name spoke as if he was alive completely threw her off. But not as much as hearing Tsunade sending him naughty pictures. “Give me the phone!” Ino tried to reach over towards Tsunade who was trying to keep a similar device as the one Sakura found away.“I’ve already explained the situation! He knows me, not the first time I’ve done it you know.” Tsunade said pushing Ino away.“Fine, but serious just hook up already.” Ino rolled her eyes and huffed with her arms crossed. Her phone as it was called dinged again, and Sakura picked it up to see a notification. She pressed a finger to it, noticing how the other two used theirs at the table. She started to search through it, the notification popping up what looked like a website with a strange layout. She had a comment from what it said.“Sakura, girl! You good?” Ino asked with concern, her voice a bit peppy.“What? Uh… yeah. I’m just not feeling good today,” she replied while putting the phone down and holding her head again. The headache was still a dull ache.“This is the first time you’ve eaten a full meal in a while. Take it easy. And when you throw up from eating so fast make sure to sip at some water,” Tsunade instructed while taking a bit of her food.“I know you’ve been depressed, but seriously. Real talk. No more bullshit.” Ino eyed over at Tsunade before looking back at her. “Come work with me at the flower shop. I know its not glorious but its something while you find a better job.”“Huh?” Sakura looked up at her dumbfounded. She wasn’t depressed, as far as she knew. Just a few hours ago she was with Sasuke. But was that real? It definitely was, she had a whole life spent as a shinobi. There was no way that was just a dream, especially since she had no idea where she was. Her head pain started to get worse the more she thought about it. She grabbed her head, wincing from the pain. “Headache?” She looked to Tsunade who grabbed a bottle next to her and opened it. She took out two pills and handed them to her.“What’s this?” She reached her hand out to take the pills and looked down to examine them.“Aspirin. Alway smart to have some on hand.” Tsunade said nonchalantly.“With how many hangovers you have daily thats not shocking,” Ino commented with attitude.“Get off my ass would you?” She retorted.Sakura looked at them with confusion. She had never heard of aspirin before but if Tsunade used it then it shouldn't be too bad. She popped the pills into her mouth and took a drink of her water in hopes it would help. “The pay at the shop is decent and I can help you learn what you don’t already know. And you know my family has no problem hiring you in part time if you need.” She looked to Ino who pushed her empty plate away from herself.“Yeah, I guess that doesn’t sound so bad.” She wasn’t sure how to respond. It must not have been the right thing to say as both looked at each other and back to her as if she had just told them the craziest thing. “What I say?”“Girl, you actually are going to do it? I have been asking for weeks and now you suddenly want to. Are you okay?”“Ino.” Tsunade slammed her hand down in between the two and shot her a nasty glare. “Sakura has been through so much already, every little step helps.”“Sorry. I wasn’t thinking.” Ino looked to Sakura with an apologetic look.“It’s alright. I just don’t know what is happening.” It wasn’t a lie. She had absolutely no idea what was going on.“Well you have been out of it for a few months after that run in with Karin. Just focus on the day and take it slow. We can get you caught up eventually,” Tsunade said caringly with a gentle smile. She started to analyze her situation as the two talked about gossip Ino was excited about. She needed to figure out about her possibilities more than whatever the blonde was excited about. Her headache was starting to go away and it made it easier to think about her situation. She died. There was no denying that but if she had been healed, this was not where she would be. Either in a hospital or village would be appropriate. Sasuke would be there for her, since they were together on the battlefield. So why was she with Ino and Tsunade? Both of them didn't seem to even acknowledge that she had died. Then there was the fact her chakra wasn’t working either.
“Sakura Haruno shall be reborn in another world. A second chance at a life she lost too early.”
The words came back to her. She remembered hearing a familiar voice that spoke one sided. It was in her dream, but was it a dream? Reborn in another world. Realization hit hard, everything making sense. The strange devices, the change in her friend and mentor, and the depression they talked about. It all added up. She was another Sakura, taking over a life for loss of her own. She shook her head, that could not be possible could it? It was not heard of but it was all she could come up with. The words echoed again. If this was another world, she would have to learn what she was doing this whole time. This world did not seem to have chakra, so testing to see if they were still shinobi was an important fact needed. “Earth to Sakura,” Ino chimed while waving a hand towards her. “I asked when you wanted me to talk with dad about it.”“Oh right. Can I think about it?” Her voice portrayed the nervousness she suddenly felt interacting with the two.“Sure. Let me know when you wanna start and we can work things around for you. Need to get you ready for the big days when we get busy.” Ino smiled with such cheer and excitement at the thought. It made Sakura smile too.At the same time all three phones at the table dinged. Sakura grabbed hers and clicked on the notification. It was a group chat that had a few people she recognized. Ino, Tsunade, Naruto, Hinata and Sai. Her heart sank as she looked at the message Sai had sent. Her hand began to shake at the site and tears formed in her eyes. It was a photo. Both Sasuke and Karin were kissing and she had her hand up with a very prominent ring on her finger. “Did he actually propose to Karin?” Tsunade exclaimed with irritation. “Sai, what the hell?” Ino shouted with anger, looking up to see Sakura frozen in place. This world was suppose to be a second chance for her, so why was Sasuke with Karin? Were they not together in this world? She felt sick to her stomach, tears falling before she could fully process what was happening. This could not be real. It had to be a nightmare. She shot up and ran upstairs, rushing to the bathroom she past on the way down. She immediately started to retch when she got to the bathroom. Everything from breakfast came back up, her throat burning from the acid coming up with it. The shouts of Ino and Tsunade were deafened as they ran up, unable to be processed as she sat on her knees over the toilet. Her emotions hit all at once, the shock wearing off and she started to scream, tears falling as she did. Why be given a second chance, if the one person she wanted to be with was out of her reach? She felt a hand on her shoulder but didn't look up. It was all too much. Whatever strange world Sakura was put in, she wanted no part of. Her vision began to blur, her surroundings faded as she passed out.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Hush murmurs were heard as Sakura began to rouse from her sleep. Her body ached, stomach and throat sore. The voices talking sounded familiar but still incomprehensible to her. Sakura opened her eyes slowly, vision blurred. She looked to the side of her bed to see the outline of two people. As she adjusted to the light in the room she started to make out the details. With a worried look was Tsunade, her hair down and her usual outfit she wore in Konoha. Next to her kneeling at her bed was the first hokage, dressed as she remembered on the battlefield. The sense of familiarity stronger upon seeing them.“Lord Hokage?” she managed to say before closing her eyes to readjust to the light.“What’s a hokage?” he asked while turning to look up at Tsunade who shrugged. When she opened her eyes again, everything flooded back to her. This Tsunade was not her mentor. She was from this alternate world, which meant the first hokage was too. His hair was tied loosely back at the nape of his neck and he wore a green button up shirt with brown slacks. Both looked back to her as she lifted herself up from the bed.“Take it easy Sakura,” Hashirama told her gently.“Ino didn't catch you in time so you hit the floor pretty hard,” Tsunade said sitting at the end of the bed.Sakura looked away from them, holding her head. For moment, she had hoped it was a bad dream. When seeing them, that maybe she was back in her world. But the reality was she was here. It bothered her greatly as she tried to think logically on the situation. No matter what she did, her emotions seemed to be more prominent. She took a deep breath and began to calm herself down. Being in an emotional state was not going to help her here. She started to analyze everything that’s happened so far and piece it together. She had died, there was no mistaking that. She remembered the feeling, her body going cold before there was nothing but peace. But then that voice said something strange. Now she was in this world. The people she knew so far were here, Tsunade and Ino both. Jiraiya was alive from the morning conversation, and here in her room was the first hokage alive and well. She was unsure how this worked but it was a world that had no shinobi. There was no mistaking it with no chakra and the lack of acknowledgment to the hokage. But were they still in Konoha? She would have to figure it all out soon, in order to fit in.“Are you going to be okay for the event tonight?” Tsunade asked as she rubbed her leg gently. Sakura looked to her, breaking away from her thoughts.“Absolutely not. She is in no condition to go out,” Hashirama interrupted before Sakura could even question anything.“She hasn’t had the best few months. If she feels alright then we can all still go,” Tsunade argued.“This may be a major event but her health is more important,” he said sternly while crossing his arms.“You are not the only doctor here, you know? I have been taking care of her.”Sakura looked between the two, noting a silent argument as they stared each other down. The air in the room was thick with tension, making it very uncomfortable. It was actually a bit terrifying with how both were so serious and challenging to each other. Sakura sighed, folding her hands in her lap. “How about if I am feeling better in a few hours I go. If not I stay home?”The two looked over to her for a moment. Hashirama nodded while meeting her gaze, his demeanor suddenly friendly again. “That I suppose is the best compromise.”She had no idea what the supposed event was, but it might give her a chance to figure out what was going on in this world. She had to get a hold of herself and adjust to this new life, even if… Her thoughts went right back to Sasuke. A sudden tightness formed in her chest. Hashirama checked his watch before turning to leave. “I have to get ready. Hopefully I see you both tonight. But if you are not feeling better Sakura, please don’t feel like you have to push yourself to come.”She looked at him, confused at his casual and familiar tone with her. “Right.”“Let mom know I’m going to get ready here with Ino. I don’t want her waiting for me again, I still feel bad about last time.” Tsunade got up to walk with him out the door. After they exited, Sakura got up and began to inspect her room. The clothes were no longer on the floor and it had been straightened up. Inside the closet the laundry basket was full, and there were not many options of clothes hanging up. She examined the few articles of clothing, a small smile forming. It was something she would wear, at least her other self did have a sense of style. When moving to the desk she looked through the papers and notebooks on the edge. They looked like medical notes. Reading through it, they were things she already knew.Under them was a medical textbook. Her other self did not seem much different than she was. If she could figure out this world, fitting in might not be as hard as she thought originally. She put the stuff back down, her hands firming on the table as she tried to hold herself together. If the difference was the depression, she could understand why. Seeing Sasuke with Karin was more than she could take. Her other self may not have been able to handle it well. What caused it all to get this way? Karin in the other world had feelings for Sasuke but he never reciprocated. Why was it different here?“Feeling any better?” Tsunade said walking back in the room, shutting the door behind her.“I’m… adjusting.”“You look like you're about to break down again,” Tsunade pointed out as Sakura walked back to the bed to sit down. She looked up at the blonde who walked over. Tsunade calming sat on the edge once again. Reality seemed to hit her harder as she stared at her. The woman looked young, and not the way she did back home. She seemed to be younger, even in the way she acted. The usually wisdom and worry, the heartache, stress, it did not exist the same way in her eyes.“Sakura,” Tsunade said gently getting closer and pulling her into a hug. “Don’t cry. It’ll get better, I promise.”She didn’t even realize she had started to cry. She pulled away to wipe her face, trying to gather herself. “Sorry. I don’t understand why I am so emotional right now.”“You’ve always been emotional. It’s only natural for you,” she commented casually, as if it was obvious. “I am not suppose to be emotional like this,” she shot back. “This part of me is over. So why…” Sakura grabbed her head, trying to calm herself. She felt like a child again, unable to stop the tears. After all that happened leading to and even after the war, she had gotten a better handle on her emotional state. She was no longer the crybaby she was before. Her chest felt like it was tightening, at the thought.“Sakura, seriously what is wrong with you? You are not acting like yourself,” Tsunade snapped. “I am. That’s the problem. I am not whoever this Sakura is.” It felt like something snapped, her anger started to overpower her sadness. Tsunade leaned back from her with a look of absolute confusion. Something was off, Sakura never snapped like that. She did when she was younger but over the years she became more depressed than angry. Tsunade started to worry about her mental state more than ever.“Sakura, I think we need to get you professional help,” she said carefully.Sakura looked up at her, brows furrowed. “Professional help for what?”“Probably some psychiatric help for starters. You have been acting strange since this morning.”Sakura kept eye contact with Tsunade, trying to figure out what to do. How could she possibly convince anyone in this world about what she knew? About where she was from? In her world, it wouldn’t have been far fetched if someone had been able to offer some proof but she got the sense that did not work here. A sudden realization hit her.“How long have you known me?” Tsunade raised an eyebrow at the question. “It’s been about four years I think.”“Only four?” She questioned, grabbing her head and thinking. “How old are you?”“Twenty five. Why?” she asked slowly and suspiciously. “Twenty five!?” Sakura said in shock, looking at her up and down. “Why do you look so surprised?”“Because you were in your fifties when I saw you last!” Sakura was unable to hold back her remark. This world was weird, but it just got even weirder. “How old am I?”“Excuse you, do I look like an old hag?” Tsunade snapped standing up off the bed.“No, you never did… most of the time.” She said correcting herself.“What, are you gonna tell me I’m married next? Or maybe Ino is dating Naruto instead of Sai. Or maybe my father and mother got divorced.” She said crossing her arms mockingly.“You never married after Dan’s death. Ino and Sai are dating and I don’t know who your parents are.” Sakura stated bluntly with a glare.Tsunade stiffened at the mention of Dan. A sadness flashed of hurt in her eyes before it was replaced with anger. She bit her tongue before huffing. “That is a low blow Sakura.”“I’m sorry.” Sakura could see the hurt in her eyes. She didn’t mean for it to come out like that, she was trying to correct the information but forgot what it meant to Tsunade. She hadn’t realized he died in this world too. She could see the emotions going through Tsunade heavily. She imagined it must not have been long ago for her to be hurt so badly. Tsunade straightened herself, looking to the door and back to Sakura.“How can you say such things? And of course you know my parents, my father was literately just here.” She said with one hand on her hip and the other pointing at the bedroom door.“What…what!? He’s your grandfather not your father.” She felt like she was going to have another meltdown. This information change was really messing with her head.“Grandfather? That is just weird.” She rolled her eyes looking at Sakura, who was holding her head as she looked at her. There was something about her expression that told her Sakura was not playing games like she thought. Sakura was never one to lie or go this far for a prank. “You are being serious.”“Of course I am. I am not the Sakura you know.” Tsunade sat down carefully, mulling over what she just said. She looked to Sakura, still skeptical. She was very adamant about this, which meant she truly believed it. The two were very close, there was no doubt in her mind her friend was lying but the things she was saying were just too out of pocket.“Alright, I’ll play along. Tell me more about who you are then?” She said crossing her arms.“My name is Sakura Haruno. I grew up in Konoha, a shinobi village in the Land of Fire. And I was your student.” Sakura began to explain the villages function, the people she knew who seemed to be a part of this world already and even her own life. It was an oversimplification but there was only so much information she could give her in a small amount of time. She tried her best to sum up close to the events of her death.Tsunade raised an eyebrow as she explained. “So you lived a life in a shinobi world, died and woke up from your dream? That is all I am hearing.”“I don’t know how to prove it to you. This world is parallel to mine, I have no way to prove it.” Sakura argued, ready to give up. “You realize this sounds ridiculous right?”“Believe me I do. But I am telling you the truth. I don’t understand it myself but something has happened that sent me here in this body.”Tsunade ran a hand through her hair. “Okay so lets say this is true. Do you know what happened to our Sakura? Any memories maybe from our world at all?”“No.” Sakura looked down, gripping the blanket. “I wish I did. If I had any memories of this world I would understand it better.” After some time of talking, Tsunade still was unsure about believing what she was saying. Nothing about it made any logical sense, but she listened to Sakura’s further explanation regardless. A village of shinobi with unnatural magic like abilities sounded like it came straight from a fantasy story. But she couldn’t deny that it sounded intriguing to hear. The only thing that made her question it was the girls lack of knowledge on technology and social media. She had an idea of the concept but she had no real memory on how to use them. Her world apparently had outdated stuff compared to the advancement this one has. She was quick to pick it up when Tsunade showed it to her, but it made her wonder if she was telling the truth. Sakura was never good at faking anything in her life, not like this. Tsunade decided to play along for a while, hoping if it was a ruse that the girl would give it up. It wouldn't be a surprise if she was trying to pretend she didn’t live a messed up life. The stress of getting rejected from college, losing ones job, and your ex boyfriend getting engaged to the worse person in the world who hates you was enough to send anyone over the edge. The two sat on the edge of the bed, Sakura with the phone in hand and Tsunade leaning over her shoulder to direct her in how to use a phone. It was so much easier to teach the pinkette than it was her own father. Tsunade hated the day he decided to upgrade to a smartphone.“Alright, so just like the other one, open it up and use your fingerprint scanner to login.”“I think I got it after the last two times I’ve done it,” Sakura said dryly.“Fine, fine.” Tsunade replied, putting her hands up as she leaned away. “Just remember toogle is your friend if you need to find stuff out.”“Toogle?” Sakura turned her head to look at her, a confused look. She sighed, leaning back to move her finger across the screen to open up the browser. “Google. You can type in anything and it will search it. Just don’t look at one single thing though, sometimes you have to scroll to find the right info or multiple sources.”“So information is on the device. That’s convenient.”“Not the device. The internet. I’ll explain more later but we should get ready for the gathering. You think you want to go or stay? If you really are from another world, it’ll probably be too much for you to handle.” She stood up and made her way to the door, looking back.“I want to go. I think it might be better to see what I am getting into here.” Sakura was typing on the phone, staring intently.“If you say so. Ino and I will help you get ready when we finish up.”“Could you make sure this stays between us?” Sakura called out before she left the room. “If you don’t believe me, no one else will either.”Tsunade stood there staring at her. Did she know she still didn’t believe her? The look on her face suggested so. With a sigh, the blonde nodded. It was for the best anyway, Ino would never believe it and anyone else would for sure have her put in the hospital thinking it was another meltdown.“This stays between us.”
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Sakura spent the afternoon researching constantly on her phone, laying in bed trying to get a grip on this world. It had some similarities to hers but it was vastly different. They still lived in Konoha, but it was a city and the layout was completely different. There were a few places she recognized like her favorite shops, Ichiraku, and the hospital at least. The biggest difference was the roads with vehicles, the schooling system for the academy, and even the other villages themselves now as cities. Things did function and run in a way that made sense as they were all allies in trade within the countries. Her friends were all alive and well from what she saw scrolling through the different social media apps, like Pictogram. Shikamaru and Temari were engaged as were Naruto and Hinata. Sai was a prodigy artist who was had a huge following, Kiba ran a dog rescue with his sister and Shino posted mostly educational bug facts. Choji was in Kumo on vacation with his girlfriend, but had just gotten back to Konoha recently. Tenten and Lee both seemed to be involved with martial arts competitions. The biggest thing that caught her off guard was seeing Neji again. He was alive and well, dating Tenten. It was such a bittersweet discover for Sakura when she stumbled upon it.Sakura sat up from the bed sighing. She needed a break, the culture of this world was more chaotic than she was use to. It would take time to adapt. Not knowing how the other her acted in this world was going to make it even harder. Tsunade obviously still didn't believe her but gave her the benefit of the doubt. It was something at least.“Sakura! Time to get ready!” Ino called outside her room. She swung her legs over the bed, second guessing if she should actually go to whatever this event was. There was a high chance people were going to know something was off. Above all else, all she knew was it was a gathering of the clans in the city. She opened the door and went towards Ino’s room where the other two were. Inside the room, the walls were a blush color with framed photos all around. The bed covered a purple comforter and matching pillows sat against the wall in the middle of the room with a canopy, purple sheer curtains tied at the posts. Above it were a few paintings with an art style that looked familiar to Sakura. Two end tables at on either side of the bed and a vanity with a large mirror was set across from it.Tsunade was in front of the mirror, checking her hair and makeup. Ino with a makeup brush handle in her mouth fixed the mess on the vanity, random items and brushes scattered with a few other beauty items. When she saw Sakura, the blonde gestured for her to sit in the chair in front of the mirror. Sakura sat down, not knowing what to expect.Ino grabbed the brush out of her mouth. “Okay so since your outfit is a bit more simply I think keeping your hair down might be best.”“Simple makeup Ino. I think neutral is best,” Tsunade commented as she moved a strand of her bangs framing her face. Her hair was in an elegant updo and her makeup flawless, the green eyeshadow accentuating her eyes.“I already know what to do.” Ino began working, laying everything out in front of her and starting with the dark circles. This was the first time Sakura had actually looked in the mirror at herself. She looked fatigued, depression a neutral expression on her relaxed face. Her hair was past her shoulders and in the same style as when she was in the academy. Now she understood why the two seemed so worried about her. She would be too.It didn’t take long for her appearance to change drastically as Ino worked. She no longer looked tired, her eyes were emphasized by the brown and red eyeshadow, and she had a beautiful neutral color over her lips. A quick set of earrings and a cherry blossom pendant pulled the look together well. Sakura got closer to the mirror as Ino cleaned up, moving her head side to side in awe.“Ino that’s amazing.” “Girl don’t doubt what I can do,” she said with a proud grin. She sat her friend back and started to brush and style her hair with a red headband.“We have to leave soon so get your stuff together Ino. Sakura and I will get our dresses on.” Tsunade called from the closet, grabbing a red dress before handing it off to Sakura.Tsunade grabbed her own dress from the closet and began to undress. Sakura did the same. The red dress had short flared sleeves and flowed outward past the waist down to her calves. It had a matching colored fabric belt that tied into a bow in the back. “Okay, time to change.” Ino announced getting up and rushing to the closet past Tsunade. The Senju herself wore a green dress that had a v-neck with a sheer overlay that had sparkles in it. Her sleeves were sheer, matching the rest of the dress and went down to her ankles. Her makeup seemed to match the outfit. Sakura took notice of the earrings she wore, recognizing the symbols immediately. The stud piece was the Uzumaki symbol used on all the vest in Konoha, while the piece dangling from it was the Senju symbol. Ino went to the mirror to check herself one last time. “What do you think?” She turned, asking for her opinion.Ino wore a lavender colored dress with a sweetheart top corset that flowed down to her feet. Around the top, flowing down the side was bush clover flower. A chocker around her neck that had the Yamanaka clan symbol as a pendant hanging from the front. Her hair was let loose with some curl at the end. Her makeup matched subtly with the dress choice.“You look amazing.” Sakura praised. Ino beamed at her compliment, striking a pose.“Yes, yes. You look great. Can we go before I get yelled at for being late?” Tsunade said at the doorway. The trio made their way downstairs and out the door. Sakura paused for a moment, taking in the scenery. It was so different yet so eerily familiar to the Konoha she knew. She quickly ran to the car, realizing the other two were waiting. After she got in, Tsunade pulled out of the driveway and drove to the event. Tsunade pulled into the parking lot of a large building. The architecture was new to Sakura, but her attention got immediately pulled to the amount of people there already. Men were dressed in various different formal wear that all had different clan symbols she recognized. Many of the women wore dress as she and the other two. Though it was all different, she couldn't help but admire the level of beauty everyone had. When the car parked, the trio got out with Tsunade leading. Ino wrapped her arm around Sakura’s and walked with her, a cheerful smile present. They went inside, showed their ID’s and went straight to rather large room filled with seats. Towards the middle of the room was a large open floor and a podium near the wall next to it. The back of the place had tables set out next to what looked to be a huge bar. Before Sakura could fully take it all in, Tsunade was already wandering off from them towards the bar. Ino sighed. “Leave it to her to get drunk before anything goes in full swing.”“Ino. And Sakura. How are you feeling?” The two turned to see Hashirama walking towards them with a woman on his arm.He was dressed in a gray colored suit with his hair free, looking at them with a smile. The woman next to him wore a cream colored dress that had a lace overlay, metting up into a halter top and a shawl over her shoulder and upper arms. Her red hair in two buns and accessories adorning them.“Oh, yeah. I am feeling better enough to be here,” Sakura said offering a smile in return, still clinging to Ino.“So you two are Tsunade’s friends. So nice to meet you. I am Mito Uzumaki, Tsunade’s mother.” The woman held out her hand. She sounded so kind and had a gentle smile that put Sakura at ease. She took her hand and shook it. “I am Sakura Haruno.”When Sakura pulled back, Ino grabbed onto her this time. “I am Ino Yamanaka. A pleasure to meet you.”“Where is Tsuna?” Hashirama asked looking around.“Bar.” Ino and Mito said in unison, the red head already looking right at Tsunade from a distance.“Maybe I should rethink allowing the bar to be open during these events.” He scratched the back of his head with a defeated sigh.Ino engages in conversation about recent events, but Sakura couldn’t help but look around. There were familiar faces among the crowds of people sitting standing in crowds or sitting at tables talking. While scanning the room, the appearance of many of the clans was very prominent. There were Uchiha, Hyuga, Uzumaki, Yamanaka and Sarutobi to name a few. Her eyes landed on Naruto, who had just seemed to notice her and waved. She moved away from the conversation and walked over towards him, meeting him halfway. He looked rather dashing in his suit, with Hinata coming up beside him in a dark blue, long sleeved dress. “Sakura, what are you doing here?” he asked with a cheerful smile.Seeing his cheery attitude brighten up the evening just a bit. “Tsunade invited me. How are you doing?”“Great. We are almost done wedding planning,” he said looking down to Hinata.“We never received your RSVP. Were you going to be coming to the wedding?” Hinata asked her. Sakura noticed immediately how different Hinata’s demeanor was. She didn’t have a single shy moment, her voice steady with confidence.“Oh, uh, yeah. I think I lost it. But I definitely will be there.” She wasn’t sure if the other her had planned to be there but she wasn’t going to miss it. It would feel wrong even if this was a different world. She tried to hold light conversation, keeping an eye on everyone there. She was surprisingly having a good time so far. She might be able to navigate through all this without as many problems as she originally thought. It would take time but she had confidence that this wouldn’t be such a bad world to live in.“Oh and then, we are getting together next month for a big reunion for everyone from school, ya know.” Naruto was trailing off in excitement. She must have been fully out of the loop with how much he was talking and catching her up on things. She could use this chance to get better information.“Sounds fun. Who is all going to be there?” She asked with a slight smile.“Most of everyone I think,” he said scratching the back of his head.“It is just the main friend groups we had through high school. A few of the Sensei are going to join too.” Hinata giggled at Naruto’s lack of explanation. “The only ones we are waiting for confirmation from is you, Sai, Lee and Tenten.”“Oh, well I guess if Ino is gonna be there it’ll be easy for me to meet up with everyone,” she offered.“Great!” Naruto shouted out. “Ichiraku adventures all over again. And this time we should be able to drink too.”“Last time you got drunk, my bathroom suffered.” The familiar voice froze Sakura in place. She turned her head to see Itachi Uchiha walking up to them. She stood there, not knowing how to react. He wore a dark suit similar to Naruto with red and white accent colors, his hair tied in the back as she remembered. “I said sorry and I helped clean it up, ya know..” Naruto looked away with crossed arms, almost pouting at the reminder.“Limitations Naruto.” He smirked, turning to look at Sakura. She stiffened further, wishing the attention was off her. “Sakura, glad to see you are doing alright.”She was taken aback by the way he seemed so familiar with her. She tried to figure out why and then it dawned on her. What happened in her world didn’t here. Meaning if Sasuke’s brother was alive and well, they must have been acquainted. Especially with how close she and Naruto were still.“Yeah. As well as I can be,” She managed to say.“With us, always.” Tsunade dropped her arm around Sakura’s shoulder, her other hand filled with an alcoholic drink. She had never been so happy to see Tsunade.“I find that hard to believe,” he raised an eyebrow while staring at her drink.Tsunade shrugged at the jab. Just as she was about to say something, Hinata gasped. “They came.”The group’s attention fell to the door. Sakura noticed the concerned look on all their faces before she turned to look. Her heart felt like it was being squeezed in her chest. Through the door Sasuke walked in, wearing something similar to Itachi. On his arm was Karin, dressed in a tight fitting, strapless black dress with her hair done up in a half bun.The two walked in and made their way to a table. Sakura’s eye widened when Karin noticed her, and gave her sneer before sitting. Sasuke seemed to notice and just stared the group down with a cold expression before sitting with her. Seeing him with her in person hurt, but not as much as the cold demeanor he held. It reminded her of when he was a criminal in her world, when he lost his way. Yet somehow, more concerning. And heartbreaking.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Tsunade tugged Sakura out of her daze, bringing her back to reality. “We should find our seats.” Her tone left no room for argument. She didn’t wait for the pinkette to respond, pulling her away from the group and storm off to a table with place cards that had names on them. It was unfortunately near the table that Sasuke and Karin were at, but their seats were facing away from them luckily. She found her plus ones card and had Sakura sit before taking a seat next to her. Those two were not suppose to be here. But as always, they had to show up when they were uninvited. After Karin had gone off on Sasuke’s parents about their disapproval of her and her attitude, the couple was told not to come to the gathering. From the look on Itachi’s face, Tsunade was sure he either knew or expected them to show up.She groaned in frustration, looking over at Sakura. Her friend looked out of place and confused at the entire situation. Her arm was on the table with her head resting on her fist while making eye contact with Sakura. She was not as upset as she usually was and it was somehow concerning. “Are you not bothered by them being here?” “Uh…” Sakura’s eyebrows furrowed as if thinking about her response.Their earlier, and strange, conversation this morning came to mind. Did she really believe herself to be from another world? Even with such a delusion, there was no way she wouldn’t have reacted to the two’s sudden appearance. Could what she said be true? Tsunade shifted her gaze away towards the crowds. No, that wasn’t possible.“Tsunade, what exactly is going on between them and me?” Sakura asked, grabbing her attention once again.“You… seriously don’t remember?” Tsunade narrowed her eyes in confusion. She straightened up, looking over her shoulder at Sasuke. Naruto was there, seemingly in a heated conversation with him and Karin. Oh no, he started something again. She groaned, ready to intervene and pull his dumbass away if needed. Before she could get up Itachi began to diffuse the situation. “Sakura,” she began as her gaze shifted back to her. “Let’s say you are not from this world. What kind of relationship exactly did you have with those two?”Sakura stiffened up, looking at the table. “Karin and I aren’t the best of friends but we aren’t enemies either. Sasuke and I…” Sakura paused, looking troubled. Tsunade got the sense she knew what she was going to say. They were together. It seemed only logical to fantasy about being with him since they were high school sweethearts. Well, until Karin came into the picture.“And in reality, Sasuke and you broke up in high school after he cheated on you.” She couldn’t think of a way to say it differently.“He what?” Sakura looked at her intently, as if hearing it for the first time. She looked back at the two, a heartbroken yet frustrate look on her face.“You can’t pretend you forgot that.”“I told you I am not your Sakura,” she shot back with anger. Tsunade was about to argue until she thought about where they were. “Please, believe me Tsunade. I need your help.”Tsunade looked around the room, seeing many people giving glances in their direction. Obviously the drama was more wide spread than it seemed, and everyone had a different type of concern. She tapped her finger on the table, annoyed at everyones gazes upon Sakura. She understood why they were worried, her friend had a habit of crying and whining because of Sasuke. In honest, it did become annoying but she and Ino refused to let that stop them from trying to help her through it even after all these years.“Fine. But I swear if you break down in this room I am not helping you anymore. This is so not the place for it,” she warned with a finger pointing at the pinkette.“What do you mean he cheated?” she said getting straight to the point. She was obviously trying to hide back her emotions but she seemed more… angry than normal.“You two were dating for at least two or three years, but near the end it was a bit rough in high school. Karin came to live with Naruto’s part of the family for a while. She started getting close to Sasuke and made you lash out or cry a lot when he gave her attention. Or so Ino says.” Tsunade tried to remember the details in order, but telling the story second hand was difficult since she had not been there.Sakura’s brows furrowed, her anger only seemed to intensify. Tsunade felt she had to be careful of her words. Though Sakura had never been one to get angry, the look in her eyes told her deep down there was something more going on. But she couldn’t tell what it was.“One day… you caught them making out. Heavily. And it ended up with a huge argument and blowout. You two broke up right then and there. No matter what he did you still seemed to be pining for him for a long time. It was worse when he dated her immediately after the break up. The asshole.” Tsunade huffed, crossing her arms while looking for Ino in the crowd. She had met Sakura after high school, so she didn’t know all the details. But Ino did. There had never been a need to know more, but with Sakura acting weird she might need to. Especially since she was insistent that Ino not know. With that blonde’s skepticism, probably was the best choice. At least for now.Sakura hung her head low, trying to process what Tsunade told her. She bit her nail, questions filling her mind. Sasuke… cheated with Karin? Of all people? That made no sense. What reason did he have for doing it? Why did he looked at herself with such disdain? There had to be more to it. She was starting to get a hang of her emotions, or more so the emotions of this worlds Sakura. But she couldn’t help the tears wanting to form. She blinked them away while taking a deep breath. If Ino knew more then she would have to find out that way.“I need another drink. And food. You want a plate?” Tsunade asked while standing from her seat.“Yeah, sure.” Sakura watched Tsunade walk off. She quickly pulled out her phone from her purse and immediately started to look up references for whatever Tsunade was talking about that she didn’t understand. She had to do more research, hopefully distracting her from looking back toward the other table. She started looking up as much as she could about high school, getting the basic idea. It was like the academy, but for much longer. And the schooling system was about various subjects pertaining to the needs of this world from what she could gather. There were a lot of similarities between the worlds which made it a bit easier to understand and adjust. Her attention was suddenly drawn to Ino, on the other side of the table looking at place cards. The blonde looked at the names and started to move them over one by one until she got to Tsunade’s seat. She placed hers over one and then put another one where she had been sitting. Sakura looked over to see the name card next to her left was now Ino.“What are you doing?” “Sitting by my friends, what does it look like?” Ino replied chipper. She held another card and ran over to a brown haired woman, handing it to her before returning.“Can you do that?” Sakura asked with concern.“Everyone at some point at the celebration does. Don’t worry,” she told her waving her hand nonchalantly. Ino then left and headed to the buffet table. Sakura looked at the name card and at hers. Now that she thought about, she actually didn’t know who else was suppose to be sitting with them. She assumed it would probably be Tsunade’s family, but then again she didn’t think to ask for confirmation. “Ino what the hell!?” Tsunade’s voice snapped her attention away and to the woman. She was looking down at the name cards with an irritated look, her eyebrow twitching. She set a plate in front of Sakura and her own, new, seat with a martini glass.“What? I thought it’d be fine,” Ino said casually setting her own salad bowl down and sitting.“It is not fine. Who did you switch with?” Tsunade interrogated, slamming her hands on the table next to Ino.“Touka said she didn’t want to be in the middle of drama central so I switched cards and moved over here. Whats the big deal?” she said popping a crouton from her salad into her mouth.“Touka? You switched with Touka?” Tsunade looked over to the other side with wide eyes. “You….” She lowered her voice so no one else could hear her but the the trio themselves. “You just sat my uncle and Izuna right next to each other. That’s the drama.”“Dinner and a show.” Ino smiled with a cackle.“What is wrong with them being next to each other?” Sakura asked with a raised eyebrow, her curiosity piqued.“Last time we tried that Izuna stabbed my uncle in the leg with a fork.”Both girls looked at each other and back to Tsunade. Ino tried to hold in her laughter while Sakura just stared at Tsunade. “He what?”“I mean…” Tsunade straightened up and ran her hand through her bangs, holding her head. “It was after my uncle bit him but still.”“Okay whoa!” Ino leaned back in her chair amused.“Why?” Sakura questioned a bit louder than she intended. She didn’t know what she was getting into.“Some argument. They argue about anything at this point.” She threw her hands up with an exasperated sigh before sitting down and taking a big swig of her drink.Sakura returned to her phone, trying to ignore Ino’s laughter. There was more she wanted to look up and get her mind off of her surroundings. Though it was difficult as more people began to show up and the noise in the room picked up. She decided to put the phone away, she could also ask Tsunade later if needed. But could she really? Tsunade still didn’t believe her about being from the Shinobi World. It wasn’t like she could blame the woman, this entire world was just as strange to her. If their positions had been switched, Sakura wasn’t even sure if she would have believed it. Stranger things have happened in her world so eventually she would have.“Sakura, you alright? You aren’t really talking much?” Ino asked looking over at her before taking a bite of her food.“Yeah. I’m fine,” she replied looking up at her.“She still needs to relax, that’s all.” Tsunade side eyed Sakura with a sip of her drink. With that look, she could tell even if she didn’t believe she was from another world at least she was covering for her.Ino started to go on about some news she got while mingling with others. Sakura couldn’t fully keep up with how in depth both Tsunade and Ino seemed to be in the gossip. She turned when the chairs near her moved. She looked over, blinking a few times to make sure she was seeing things right.A couple chairs over a man sat down who looked a great deal like Sasuke. It was uncanny though some features were very different. He wore the same outfit most of the Uchiha men wore and his hair was much long, tied at the nape of his neck. His demeanor was much more calmer than Sasuke’s even as he eyed everyone at the table. He looked over to the name card next to himself and scowled.“You have to be kidding me!” He shouted, getting the other two’s attention. Ino leaned back in her chair with a grin, obviously waiting for the drama to start. Tsunade opened her mouth to speak but was interrupted before she could. “Izuna, it is not the end of the world.”Sakura stiffened at the voice next to her as the chair pulled out. Izuna made a comment but she didn’t hear it. It may have been a few years since the war, but she still remembered his voice clearly. Slowly looking up she saw it was none other than Madara Uchiha, dressed identically to Izuna. He pulled out the chair and sat next to her, not giving her a single glance. He was alive in this world, but why? How? She looked around and saw Hashirama talking with Mito as they sat down next to Tsunade. If he was here, then should it be a surprise that Madara was too? She immediately looked away, trying to compose herself. This was a different world and he was here in Konoha. So there shouldn’t be anything to worry about… right?“Again? Who thought this was a good idea?” Tobirama said as he looked down at his seat between Hashirama and Izuna.“I am pretty sure Touka was suppose to be seater here,” Hashirama commented looking up at him.Sakura looked at Ino who was trying to sink lowly in her chair to stay out of sight. The blonde looked at her with a look that showed how much she knew she was in trouble. Her gazed shifted to Tsunade as she sighed, looking down at there friend. Clearly Ino did not think things through.“Ino, would you happen to know what happened to the seating arrangement?” Mito asked in a quiet but teasing tone while following Tsunade’s gaze.“Nope. No idea.”“You two can survive one night can’t you?” Hashirama asked, making both of the men look at him as if he had lost his mind.Tobirama groaned, reluctantly sitting down. Sakura looked between he and Izuna. The two obviously didn’t care for one another but the way they ignored each other looked more like two children pouting. It was humorous in a way that Sakura had to hold in a giggle at the childish scowls on their faces. Now that the group was at the table, they all began to eat with light conversation. Sakura stayed quiet while she picked at her food, listening to what she could to gather more information. This dinner was a chance for the clans to gather, celebrating the day that Konoha had been officially recognized as a city.Apparently with how close they all tried to stay, it became difficult with day to day lives and it was a chance for everyone to catch up with each other. A few different celebrations happened through the year but this was a huge deal. It was no wonder Tsunade chose her as a guest since she had no big clan affiliation. This table in particular had Hashirama's family and Madara's family since their families founded the city and got it recognized. Another similarly to her own world yet so vastly different in the way it happened. But from what Ino said earlier, seating didn’t matter too much if people could switch out their own seats. Or at least Ino would regardless of the trouble she was going to get into.Even when listening to the conversations, she was very aware of Madara's intimidating presence next to her. She felt uneasy being next to him, even if he hadn't done anything in this world as far as she knew. Whenever he spoke she couldn't help but keep her gaze away from him. She didn't know what to do In this situation. She was just glad no one really acknowledges her present too much. She looks over to Tsunade. Her eyebrows furrowed as she stared back, as if understanding there was something strange going on. But when looking at Ino between them, with her elbows rested on the table and she was hung up on both of the Uchiha when they were speaking. Sakura wanted to roll her eyes. The younger Ino she knew did the same thing. So some things really never changed. The thought then occurred to Sakura… wasn't Ino in a relationship with Sai. Why was she oogling them?"Sakura, can I speak with you for a moment?" Tsunade said quietly, nudging her head towards the door near them as she got up. Sakura excused herself, following her. She had a feeling Tsunade wanted to know what was going on. And that she have to explain about the war.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Tsunade stands there, tapping her foot with crossed arms. Sakura waited to hear what she had to say after the explanation. They had gone off to the empty and secluded cocktail room to talk. Tsunade wanted to know why Sakura suddenly seemed uncomfortable at the table, so there was no choice but to tell her what had happened in the war. Or at least a less complicated version. It looked like Tsunade was fed up with the stories. She sat down on a small couch, rubbing her temples. Sakura could only stand there and wait for a response. After a few moments Tsunade downed the drink she had and left the glass on the table as she stood. “Okay, look… I…” Tsunade rubbed her temple, her eyes closed. “I am really… starting to believe you. The Sakura I know could never make this kind of shit up. You are not that creative.”“Should I be insulted?” Sakura put her hands on her hips at the comment.“Maybe. But that’s not the point. If that is true then…ugh!” Tsunade sat back down on the edge of the couch with her hands in her hair. “This is too weird to even think about.”“How do you think I feel?” She gestures around the room. “This entire world is strange to me. There are some parallels, but it is still new.”Tsunade sighs, looking up at her friend. “If you are here from another world… What happened to our Sakura?”She stood there looking at Tsunade, eyebrows furrowed as she thought about it. She had no clue what happened to the old Sakura. The thought was on her mind most of the day as she tried to piece everything together. She wanted to give her an answer but couldn’t find one. “I wish I knew.”Tsunade put her hands on her thighs and lifted herself off the couch. “We need to head back in there. This conversation can continue at home. For now, just… try to bare with sitting next to Madara. People obviously are not the same here.”“Easy for you to say,” Sakura mumbles, crossing her arms.Tsunade grabbed her arm gently, and the two walked back towards the dining hall. “Our families have been friends for years. I can at least vouch for him in this world. Gods, that's weird to say.”Sakura giggled at her exasperation. At least now it seemed she did believe her. Would it be a good idea to tell Ino too? They all lived together and she would probably get suspicious if Sakura acted weird, but she didn’t know how good Ino would be at keeping the secret. Or if she would believe her like Tsunade, the more reasonable one of the two.“Shit,” Tsunade says agitated after peeking in the door.“What’s wrong?” Sakura asked, trying to peek in around her.“The speeches have started.” She groans, turning to look at her. We go in slowly and not draw attention to ourselves. I’ll never hear the end of it otherwise.”Sakura nods as the door was pushed open enough for them to slip in. The table being close enough to the exit at least made it easier. She notics immediately as they walked to their seats that a few people were missing from the table. She looked over to where everyone was looking, seeing Madara making a speech with Izuna next to him. Ino was nowhere to be seen and only Hashirama and Mito remained at the table. She sits down, turning her chair like Tsunade and everyone else had done. Madara seemed to command the attention of the entire room as he spoke. It was so eerily familiar to the way he was back then, after the entire world was consumed by the Infinite Tsukuyomi. That was right before Black Zetsu betrayed him. It was certainly strange being here and seeing someone who was the biggest threat of all simply doing as he pleased like a normal person. Sakura got a strange feeling that she was being watched all of a sudden. With a glance to the side, she narrows her eyes at Karin who was giving her an angry stare. She didn’t know why Karin hated her so much. If what Tsunade said was true about this world, then shouldn’t it be the other way around? Karin had not been such a bad person in the shinobi world. The two didn’t have many interactions but they still respected each other. She knew deep down that there had to be more to it, something she was missing about the entire thing. Her attention was brought back when everyone began clapping. She did the same, watching as the two return to the table. Sakura adjusted in her seat, looking around the room to find Ino. Servers were coming around and picking up plates and refilling water. Some others were getting up, going straight to the bar area for more alcohol most likely. The chatter and laughter among people began to grow again.“Tsunade, where were you?” Mito had asked with a scolding tone.Sakura looked over, seeing her look over to her before looking back at Mito. “Sakura was a bit unwell so we took a breather.”“Oh, I see.” Mito looks over to Sakura, her expression softening a bit and nods. Hashirama kept his eye on her for a minute longer with concern.“What happened?” Izuna asked as he sat down, bumping into Tobirama as he did. The white haired man immediately snaps his head to give the Uchiha a glare.“I haven’t been feeling well lately. That’s all,” Sakura replied with a forced smile. She felt the need to give a reply before Tsunade tries to. It was obvious she hasn't been talkative since arriving and didn't want to be out of place. And her friends talking for her was already off putting. “Maybe you should have stayed in bed tonight. You didn't look well this morning,” Hashirama commented. Mito nudged him harshly in the side causing him to jump slightly. “I'm fine. Really.” Sakura raised her hands in defense.“At least someone is trying to enjoy themselves,” Izuna said with a smile, nudging Madara. His elbow was on the table and he rested his head against his fist while watching them all. “Nothing about giving the same speech every year is enjoyable.”“That is surprising given how much you like to hear yourself talk.” Tobirama smirked, not even giving a glance in his direction. Madara narrows his eyes at the man and adjusted his hand just enough to flip him off.“We should prepare for our speech now.” Hashirama looks at Mito with a soft smile.“At least your enthusiasm will make up for the boredom,” Madara said without hesitation. “Is it really that bad?” Hashirama hung his head low in defeat.“Let's go dear.” Mito got up, grabs Hashirama's arm gently to stand him up and lead him towards the podium. Sakura felt her smile become genuine as the scene unfolded before her. It was surprisingly not as uncomfortable as it first was when she arrived. The group at the table was lively and much friendlier towards each other than expected. She looked over, seeing the blonde lazily sip at the drink with her eyebrows knitted. She was obviously lost in thought.“Ugh, these speeches are so boring. Can we skip it next year please?” Izuna complains, while leaning back in his chair.“It Is important to address all the needs and concerns of the city,” Tobirama huffs. “I agree with Izuna. It should be shortened one of these days.” Tsunade puts her empty glass down and looks over to meet Sakura's gaze. She forced a smile but Sakura could see something was wrong.A moment later a thud pulled their attention to Izuna who had fallen back with the chair. “You did that on purpose?” he shouts at Tobirama while trying to get up.“You accuse me? You are the one who was on the verge of falling in the first place,” he smirked down at him.“Izuna, sit down before you make a scene.” Madara looks at Tobirama with a heated glare as he speaks. Everyone adjusts their seats to look back at the podium where Mito stood. The woman had a dignified air about her as she spoke, gaining the crowds attention immediately. She gave a quick introduction for Hashirama, receiving an applause from the crowd as he took her place and began his speech. But Sakura could not keep focus when she felt something hit her arm lightly. She turns to look at the ground, seeing a piece of broccoli. Looking around, her gaze met Karin's. She was snickering, her hand on a small plate of broccoli by her side of the table. Was she really being that childish, throwing food? Sakura turns her attention away. She would not cause trouble because of the redhead.Just then she saw a piece miss her completely, hitting Madara. His attention snapped to look between Karin and Sakura. She froze, not knowing what to do. She glanced back to see Karin had paled, turning back fully to look to the podium. He was still as intimidating as in the other world and had the same effect on people here.He looks at Sakura for a moment, almost studying her. She looked away quickly to avoid eye contact. He bent down to pick up the broccoli on the ground. She watched curiously when he placed it at the edge of the table, angling it. He flicked it across the distance and it hit Karin directly in the head. She turns with a scowl at Sakura until she sees Madara staring her down. The redhead got up, immediately stomping her way to the door and left the room angrily. Sasuke said something before she walked off but it looked like she ignored him completely. Sakura glances back at Madara who had a satisfied grin on his face. He repeated what he had done, placing the broccoli on the edge of the table before flicking it to hit Sasuke in the throat. She had to admit his aim was surprisingly good for such a simple action. He glares at Madara, both intently staring at one another until Sasuke turns to look back at the podium. He was still clearly angry, side eyeing Sakura. She avoids his gaze and looks back to Madara who stares at Sasuke a moment longer before glancing at Sakura with a slight grin. He then turns to give his attention back to the speech. A quiet snort came from the other side of the table. Izuna watched the entire thing, finding it amusing how easily the troublesome couple had been shut down. Even more so when his brother decided to be petty with a simple retaliation. Sasuke had to have known his fiancée would cause trouble seeing the pink haired girl here, yet he acted like he was unaware. Probably to save face for himself, typical behavior. It was a surprise that Tsunade had chosen her as a plus one with the chance those two would still show up. He crosses his arms, glancing towards the blonde who was too busy staring and stirring her drink lazily. This whole night thus far, the usual vibe was off and it sparked his curiosity. Tsunade was never this troubled. He had an inkling it had to do with the girl at the table, and not her usual drama. He applauded with the crowd at the end of the speech, watching as Tsunade gets up to get another drink. Izuna gets out of his chair and follows her after a moment. This was the perfect opportunity to get some information. If there was one thing he loved, it was getting into other peoples business. He was getting bored with the stuff involving the clan, much of it just recycled drama, and the city had little to offer right now. But this would be fun to look into for a while.“Haven’t you had enough to drink already?” Izuna teases while standing next to Tsunade in line.“Ugh, you sound like my parents. I know when to stop,” she snaps. Clearly she didn’t given how she was beginning to sway. More than likely she would end up going home with Mito again tonight before the party truly began.“Sure. And Tobirama’s speech is going to be the highlight of the event,” he said with a sarcastic tone.Tsunade rolls her eyes at his remark. “What do you want Izuna?”“What’s with girly?” He gestures with his head back to the table with crossed arms.Tsunade took a leveled breath and kept quiet. Everyone knew he was a gossiper, but most of the time people ended up spilling the tea anyway. This time though, even drunk she didn’t look like she would talk. Interesting. At least she knew how to keep her mouth shut when needed which was impressive in her state.“You act like bringing her was more of a problem than-”“Listen old man, that is not your business!” she snapped before moving ahead in line.“Oh? Then explain why you are acting more absent than usual. Or is it because you didn’t think the dipshit would show up?” He moved up close to her, his hands clasped behind his back with a grin.“Those two never attend these things. I didn’t know. Besides, that is not the problem.” Tsunade folded her arms and kept her stare at the counter.“Sakura then? If she is not feeling well you shouldn’t have let her come.” He shrugs casually, grinning as he sees her visibly tense with a scowl.“Whatever it is you want to know, you are not getting it.”Bingo. It was definitely something to do with the girl. More than likely Tsunade would say no more, so he would have to find another source. It would not be easy since he was never in the Senju’s circle for this kind of thing. Sakura had become distant from the Uchiha since Sasuke’s screw up according to Mikoto, and that was all he knew. But he had ways of figuring it out. “I was just wanting to chat. I’ll leave you be then,” he says as she walks to the counter to order her drink.Izuna walks off back towards the table. He stops and spots Ino off near the podium with Mito, fixing the displays. Looks like someone messed up the arrangement. He crossed his arms and tapped a finger to his lip. He was sure she lived with Tsunade, which meant she may be a good possibility for information. He frequented the flower shop enough to have an acquaintance with her, so it wouldn’t hurt to find out.He strode over and immediately grabs what Mito is holding to lift to back up in place. “I got this.”“Why are you suddenly so helpful?” she asks eyeing him suspiciously. “Because I don’t want to deal with your drunk daughter,” he says with a grin, nodding his head towards the table where Tsunade sat back down.Mito immediately huffs before heading back, no doubt to scold the woman. He begins to arrange everything, keeping an eye on Ino who was frantically putting a whole sections of flowers together again. He did wonder what happened to the display when he was gone, it was fine before he got up. Once they got most of it together, he side steps closer to Ino.“What exactly happened here?” he asks looking down at her.She leans back to look somewhere. She then looks up at him before making sure everything in front of her was in place. “It got knocked over after the speech.”“Let me guess. Hashirama didn’t pay attention to where he was looking?” he chuckled lightly.“It wouldn’t be the first time,” he heard her mumble.“Looks like everyone is having an interesting evening. First the broccoli incident, now this.” He put a hand to his hip, turning to look at her.“Broccoli incident?” She raised a curious eyebrow. One thing he did notice about her, she liked to get any tea she could find as well. “Karin thought it would be a good idea to throw food at your friend during the speech.” Ino’s face contorts in anger immediately. “She what?” “It was handled. Don’t worry about it,” he says waving his hand casually. “What’s with her anyway? She doesn’t look like she is doing well.”“Sakura is having a hard time with life right now.” Ino stepped back to look at the arrangement one last time. “Karin doesn’t make it any better whenever she gets the chance.”“What did she do to make her so antsy around everyone though?” “Finding out about the proposal set her off this morning. Those two showing up was not a good idea. I had to change seats with Touka just make sure I was there for her.” Izuna raised an eyebrow. “Yet you haven’t been seen since the speeches began.”“Hey I have been busy,” she defends with hands on her hips.A thought occurred to Izuna after a moment. “Are you the reason Tobirama and I are siting next to each other?”“Um…” Ino straightened up with wide eyes. “I should go check on Sakura.”She darts off past him and to the table immediately. Izuna stood their with his mouth agape at her. Now it made sense, they would never put them two together after the last few times. Sneaky little shit. Touka Senju as well. She knew what would happen and found a way out of it. He was not that upset, kind of impressed since it was something he himself would do.He walks back to the table, satisfied for the moment at what he learned. To dig deeper took patience, and he had all the time in the world now. He watches as Ino pulls Sakura from her seat and leads her out of the room. With a grin he sits down, knowing there was bound to be more to learn sooner or later. And he would find a way.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
This was humiliating. To be crying in a restroom during one of the biggest events of the year. All because one stupid girl got the attention for her fake innocent crybaby antics. There was nothing much she could do in retaliation. Even Madara, who barely knew her, had intervened. Karin wipes her eyes of the frustrated tears and blows her nose before throwing the paper towel away in the trash. The clan treated Sakura like a part of the family and yet Karin herself was some nuisance outsider. Sure her Uzumaki temper had gotten the better of her at times, like yelling at Mikoto just yesterday, but it wouldn’t if they would just accept she and Sasuke were together. It was tiring being compared to someone who didn’t even have their life together but was praised just because they were a favorite.Voices were coming from the hall, getting closer to the restroom. She did not want to be seen like this, thus Karin quickly retreats into the farthest stall and closes the door. Not even a moment later the door to the restroom opened and instantly she recognizes Ino’s annoying voice. Hiding was probably the better option after all.“You cannot be serious!? Why is she like that? I swear one of these days she is going to get what’s coming to her,” Ino said as she entered.“Why are you so upset about it? It isn’t a big deal,” Sakura huffs.Karin held back a growl hearing her voice. She opens the door just slightly to peek at the two standing in front of the mirror. Ino pulled some supplies out of her small bag and began fixing her makeup. Sakura just stood next to her, looking confused. It was very obvious how much she had not been taking care of herself, she was skinnier than normal and her complexion was suffering from it as well. Even through the makeup, Karin could see it.“Yes it is. It always has been.” Ino stops to look at Sakura. “Ever since Karin came into our lives all she does is cause trouble for everyone. Especially you. Why are you not upset about it?” It took everything in her to not exit the stall and punch the blonde. If anything she had not caused problems in years. This was all the pinkette’s fault. She intended to stay with Sasuke and live a happy life yet every corner Sakura was there trying to cause drama. Her grip on the stall door hardened as her anger grew. If only they knew how manipulative Sakura actually was. Always crying to Mikoto whenever she had a problem, feigning innocents whenever they were caught together and pretending it was not her fault, and worst off getting Sasuke caught in it all. No one ever believed him about anything, not even his family. One day she was going to make sure Sakura had what was coming to her.Sakura looked to herself in the mirror, staring and looking lost. “I guess it doesn’t matter to me. I…”“Ugh, I don’t get you. All day you have been acting weird.” Ino looked back in the mirror to apply her mascara. “After that break down this morning from the engagement news I was sure you would leave. Or confront Karin for once.” Karin grins to herself. Just knowing their engagement affected her felt like a win.“Does any of it really matter? I want to get on with my life,” she says looking back at her friend.Ino groans while putting her stuff away. She packed her little bag up and closed it before turning to Sakura. “I guess so. But anyway, I have news for you.” Ino clasped her hands in front of herself.“News?”“Yes! Look…” she took Sakura’s hands in hers. “I know you said you didn’t want help but dad said you could work at the shop for a little while just so you have a job and he will give you a good word when you find another job. With an influx of seasonal weddings coming up this year we need the extra hands. Please?”Sakura sighed. “Is that why you wanted to talk so badly?”“Of course! I want to help you. Please Sakura?” Ino begs.“Fine. I don’t see you giving me a choice here.”Ino straightens up, her mouth opened in disbelief. “Really? You will!”“Yeah,” she replies with a weak smile. “I guess it wouldn’t be so bad with you around.”She did not understand how Ino could be so blind to Sakura’s little game. It was textbook and it wasn’t the first time she had done it. Reject help as long as possible before acting like she finally gives in to get what she wanted all along. So instead of finding a job she's just using connections to get what she wants. She waits as they talk about the flower shop, fidgeting with her fingers. There was no way to leave, as much as she wanted to, so she had to wait it out. Eventually Sasuke would be looking for her. It was not long before she saw Ino leaving. But Sakura stayed behind. She was leaning against the counter, head hung down in front of the mirror. “If you are going to talk shit about someone maybe you should make sure they aren’t around,” she said exiting the stall with a scowl. Sakura jumped in surprise before looking at her. “I didn’t,” she replied, moving to face her direction.“Tch, yeah and the conversation I heard must have been my imagination.”“I don’t want to start anything with you. Just leave me alone,” Sakura said, turning to leave. Before she could, Karin stomps over and grabs her wrist to spin her around. “You have nerve trying to play innocent all the time. I am so sick of it! You may fool everyone else but not me.”“What are you talking about?” she shouted, pushing her hand off of her wrist.“You know damn well what. Every single time you have to find a way to show up and cause a problem for me. This is an event for the clans of the city, you shouldn’t even be here. You only got here because of your friends. Always finding a way to get whatever you want! It is so sickening how dumb they are too.”Before she could say anymore, Sakura ran out the door. Good, she wasn’t supposed to be here and maybe she will leave. It meant Karin could actually enjoy the event now, not worrying about pinky and her friends. She had no idea what issues Karin was talking about, but something about what she said hurt her deep inside. There was an overwhelming urge to leave the event all together. She could not get a handle on her emotions, and she started to suspect it was because of the other Sakura. Everything her body was use to was the other Sakura. In the Shinobi world, she had been able to get a hold of herself and keep at least some of her emotions in check aside from small outbursts. But the sensitivity of the feelings since getting here was ridiculous. How could the other version of herself live like this?“You’ve always been emotional. It’s only natural for you.” Tsunade’s words from this morning echo in her mind heavily. Sakura exited the building, trying to wipe the tears that threatened to fall. She had to calm down and get it together. Looking around, there was a small pavilion off to the corner of the building. It was empty so she picked up her pace to head over there, giving her a chance to calm down. Or at least she thought it was empty. She was about to turn away when she saw it was Shikamaru, sitting on the bench inside smoking.“Sakura, what happened?” he asked before she had a chance to back track.“Oh, uh… nothing. Just needed air,” she replied with her head turned away.“Karin again?” he guessed. She turned to look back at him, a bit surprised he figured it out quickly. Then again it was probably not the first time something like this happened. He patted the seat next to him, switching his cigarette to the other hand away from her. She walked up the couple steps inside to sit next to him. Shikamaru shifted towards her, a leg up on the bench as he pulled out a pocket sized bag. He unzips it and takes out a cotton swab along with a small piece of cloth. “Tell me what happened this time?” he asked casually while he started to wipe her face carefully and use the swab to clear the wetness from her tears.“She just said some things that hurt. But she was right. I shouldn’t be here.” She didn’t mean just the event either.“Heh… of all people she is the one who isn’t supposed to be here. Even if she has two clan names behind her. But we all got your back.” It made her feel a little better knowing her friends were all still here for her the same way as her original world. But a part of her didn’t like the fact they were all focused on her well being. How could the other Sakura let herself get this way? Was being a shinobi the only reason she became self-sufficient back home? The very thought was grating to think about.“Why do you carry that around?” Sakura asks, looking down at the small bag, trying to change the subject.Shikamaru chuckles and pulls back. “Do you remember how often Ino would cry because of the smallest thing back in school? I had to keep a habit of fixing her makeup or she would get even more upset for messing it up in the first place.”“So you keep a bag of supplies around?” she pulls back as he finishes.“Only to events like this. Ino still forgets to bring her own sometimes. Its always good to be prepared with a backup.” He smiles while putting everything away.It was reassuring seeing how even someone like Shikamaru was still the same in this world. Having a backup plan like this, though simple, was something to expect from him. It raised questions on how many of her friends were still the same despite the few differences she has noticed. Especially with how they all were living in a shinobi free world and not involved with conflict daily. The thought then occurred to her, this world was them living out their lives like regular people. Civilians. She had guessed it already but something suddenly clicked in her head to fully understand it. Everyone was still here and stayed connected even still.“Shikamaru, can you be honest with me?” she asked with a serious look.“Uh sure,” he said, taken aback, adjusting in his seat and taking a hit of his cigarette.“What do you and everyone else think of me?” she asked, trying to make sure she didn’t say anything too strange. After Tsunade’s reaction she would need to be careful with words.Shikamaru looked at Sakura for a long moment, as if studying her. He finally let out a long, deep sigh before answering. “Do you really want to hear this?”“Yes.”“To be blunt, there are a few things Karin has said that were the truth.” He took another drag of his cigarette. “You do have a clinging problem, and not in a good way. You still have an unhealthy attachment to Sasuke who has obviously moved on and it can be like walking on eggshells with you.”Sakura sat there, frozen in place by his words. Even if it was another world's version, hearing him say that about her stung. She looked at the ground with her eyebrows furrowed and tears welling up in her eyes. She was not sure if it was the body's reaction or her own.“But we want to help you out of whatever depression you have been in. We all know how hard it has been for you. Ino texted me about this morning. Sai was a bit insensitive sending the announcement like that but I think it was best for you to know before coming here,” he said leaning forward. Sakura tried to process his words. Karin was very wrong. Her friends helped her because they cared even if she was a problem. Because they believed she could do better, which was comforting. This version may have been more of an emotional issue, but they were still here. She didn’t want to be a burden to them, especially knowing how strong she could truly be. It would take time to put everything together but it was her goal. The first thing to do in this world was to change who she was. Or rather this version of herself.“Thanks Shikamaru.” She looks over at him with a small smile, which seemed to shock him.“What?”“For being honest. Knowing I can do better and that you guys haven’t left me behind, it makes things easier.” She took a deep breath and straightened up, letting the tears slowly fade so to not ruin her makeup again. She was unsure how much time had passed talking with Shikamaru. They were still talking about recent events in Konoha. It was not expected of her to be fully aware of the updates in everyone’s lives given Shikamaru’s reaction to her knowledge of what was going on in some of the social media posts. Doing her research this morning was definitely a good idea. From what they discussed, she could piece things together easily and it all started to make sense. He had already graduated from college, having also graduated high school early given his intelligence. Temari recently moved in with Shikamaru, leaving Suna for Konoha. The two planned to get married at the end of the next year since Naruto and Hinata were getting married in spring. While Ino was working at the flower shop, Choji was working at his family's restaurant which was becoming increasingly popular. Shino was going to college while Kiba was not only working with his sister with their rescue but was working at becoming a veterinarian like Hana. He was also working alongside a cat rescue to get a space to create a shelter.Lee is working at the martial arts dojo with Tenten being one the top competitors and soon to be instructor. Neji and Hinata both worked odd jobs and mostly took care of their family. Neji was the next to take care of the clan so he was not around much.Sakura was not surprised to hear many of their sensei from the shinobi world were also teaching at the local schools, though different grade levels. Iruka taught the younger kids while people like Kakashi, Asuma and Kurenai were teaching high school. Many of the teachers even kept in contact with their students after graduation.Naturally they did not keep up with Sasuke after the fallout he caused. Some of them had tried to keep in contact but as time went on he caused more problems among the groups and everyone slowly drifted away from him. Even Naruto had parted ways from their friendship. Of all the minor changes in this world, she could hardly wrap her head around Naruto giving up on Sasuke.“…Sooner or later we are all probably going to get together anyway. Choji has been begging us to have a party at the restaurant since it has been so long. It would be nice for you to join us again. Ino would be happy,” Shikamaru commented, lighting a new cigarette.“I would like that. To be able to see everyone together again.” It had been a while since they were all together even in the other world. That would be the perfect opportunity to connect in this new one. “How long have we been out here?” Shikamaru shrugged, unbothered. “I don’t know. Probably not long enough.”“You don’t seem like you care much about the gathering.”“I don’t. It’s the same every year, nothing but a drag.” Sakura smiled at his remark. He definitely hasn’t changed.“Why is everything a drag for you Nara?” A voice caught their attention, catching Sakura completely off guard. The two look, walking up the stairs into the pavilion was Madara who has a bored look on his face.“Hey, you know I have a point. What are you doing out here anyway?” Shikamaru replied while holding out a spare cigarette that Madara took.“I cannot take another minute of Tobirama’s recap of the last year. We all live here and know what has been happening. I have no idea why it is so important.” He took the lighter Shikamaru offered and lit his cigarette, before handing it back. Sakura’s eyes move between the two as they spoke. This entire interaction was getting weirder by the second. She still could not wrap her head around how casual things were with Madara around everyone given what she knew.“Oh so it is a drag,” Shikamaru grinned. “He certainly makes it feel that way.” He chuckled, sitting across from them.“Hey, how come you guys let Sasuke attend the event? I thought he was invited.” Shikamaru asks with a seriousness in his tone. Sakura turns to look at him for a moment for his forward question. She looked over to Madara hesitantly, curiously.“I don't get involved in that drama. Letting that dipshit attend was up to Mikoto.” Madara leaned back, crossing a leg over his knee as he spoke. “Whatever she decided in the end is her business, not mine.”“I guess she made an expectation for him this time,” he commented while sitting straight.“Karin was not supposed to attend given Mito's demands but they got around that by attending as Sasuke's plus one.” There was a hint of annoyance in Madara's voice as he referred to the Uzumaki. “Well she definitely is causing problems already,” Shikamaru said while rubbing the back of his neck. “Glad I'm not in there.”it was more obvious to Sakura now just how much Karin was not liked. Given the information she got while talking to Shikamaru, Karin never seemed to fit in, even living with Naruto and his parents. And she made it a point to always be loud, obnoxious and, as he put it, a bitch. It was only getting worse and Sakura herself was the main target, yet Karin tried to go after everyone in their friend group. “More than you know.” Madara looked over at Sakura, who shifted uncomfortably.“Shikamaru!” “Look’s like they finally noticed I was missing.” Over at the entrance to the building, Shikaku stands expectantly. Shikamaru sigh, flicking his cigarette before taking another puff and putting it in the receptacle that was in the center. “Later.” He said getting up, hands in his pockets while heading back to the building.“Bye,” Sakura said as he left, smiling. “I don’t understand why you let her get away with everything,” Madara said taking a drag. Sakura looked over to see Madara staring at her. She fidgeted with her fingers, looking away quickly. There was no way to respond to that given her situation. The evening was already weird enough how neutral things were with him and Shikamaru. It was even stranger to be sitting across from him of all people now while on the subject. Madara stood up, tossing his burnt out cigarette butt into the receptacle and turns to leave. A wave of relief washed over her as he did. There would hopefully be no other reason to be around him after this event. “A piece of advise,” he calls over his shoulder to gain her attention. “Instead of pining after a prick like Sasuke or being bullied by a useless instigator like Karin, you should focus time into yourself. Your self loathing is pathetic.”Sakura couldn't do anything but stare as he walked off. She wasn't sure if he was being encouraging or insulting. Her jaw clenched and her hands ball into fists. Regardless of whichever it was, something inside her snapped from what he said. She stood from her seat, ready to find Ino so they could leave. If they didn't, her newfound anger would probably cause a kind of trouble no one would expect. She was already keen on becoming her true self again, but her friends would probably not be ready for such a quick change. She marches from the gazebo towards the building quickly, making sure to knock into Madara on purpose as she did.“Hey!” he called out with irritation.“I'm not pathetic.” She said turning for just a moment, anger apparent on her face before she turns back to head inside.
