Issei woke up to the sound of a baby crying, somehow soft and incredibly loud at the same time. He could hear, faintly, the sound of his husband grumbling from the hospital bed, too exhausted from bringing their little girl into the world to do anything about little Mei’s sobs.
He stood from his chair, bones creaking as he headed to the bassinet where the source of the noise was coming from, a tiny bundle with tufts of pink hair and big brown eyes looking red in the face despite the fact that she’d only been crying for less than a minute.
“I’ve got you,” he murmured, pulling her into his arms and holding her against his chest. He yawned, rocking her gently while she cried into his shoulder. “I’ve got you…”
He locked eyes with his husband, lit dimly by the moonlight and looking so beautiful he wanted to pull him into his arms too. A small smile made its way onto his face, and he raised a brow.
“Just a few hours old and she’s already as loud as you.”
Takahiro snickered, shaking his head. “I am
not
that loud. You must be confusing me with Oikawa.”
Issei shushed him, rubbing Mei’s back- his hand practically covered her whole body, so it was kind of hard, but he was managing. “She’s finally calming down, don’t mention Oikawa. You’ll scare her.”
“Oh, god forbid we get an Oikawa jumpscare at-” Takahiro looked at the clock on the wall. “Three in the morning.”
He was the one that laughed this time, shoulders shaking, as he rolled his eyes. “A
jumpscare,
” he wheezed, “shut up, Makki. God. She’s never going to fall back asleep at this rate.” Not to mention poor Oikawa wasn’t even here to defend himself this time.
Takahiro’s gaze softened, and he gestured at the baby in his husband’s arms. “You must be tired… she’s already asleep, sweetheart.”
Issei looked down, and his heart skipped a beat, his daughter’s little face filling his vision, her eyelashes fluttering against her chubby cheeks and her nose scrunched up cutely. She looked just like Takahiro, like this, a little angel with soft pink hair sleeping soundly in his arms.
“So she is…” he said quietly, glancing over at the bassinet with a small frown. “Is it… is it weird that I don’t want to put her down? I should want a break, right?”
The pink haired man shook his head, smiling up at him. “She’s brand new… give it a couple of weeks and you
might
want to put her down once in a while.”
“I don’t think I will…” Issei said, brushing her hair away from her forehead, eyes full of love and adoration as he looked down at her.
Takahiro sighed, leaning back against the hospital bed. “Me neither.” He frowned slightly, eyes settling on his husband holding their daughter, and scooted down the hospital bed as much as he could. “Come here, actually. I want in on the cuddling too.”
Issei laughed quietly and obliged, crawling in bed next to him, half of his body hanging off the edge as he struggled to get comfortable next to Takahiro. “You do realize these beds weren’t made for two full grown men, right?”
“Well, I haven’t slept without you in years, and I’m not gonna start now,” Takahiro shrugged, laying his head on his shoulder and settling his gaze on Mei. His little girl,
their
little girl.
He’d waited nine months to meet her, and he could hardly believe she was finally here. Everything felt so surreal, and seeing her there, in Issei’s arms… it almost brought him to tears.
“She’s got your hair… your curls,” he wrapped a soft pink curl around his index finger, and smiled. “She’s got your thick ass eyebrows too… poor kid.”
Issei gasped in mock offence, pulling her away from his husband. “Those eyebrows are
adorable
on her, excuse you. Did you just insult my daughter?”
“Our daughter,” he corrected him, draping an arm across his waist. “And I insulted you… she got caught in the crossfire.”
He hummed in agreement, hand finding its way into Takahiro’s hair and smoothing it back for him. “Our daughter…” He breathed, “I like the sound of that.”
Takahiro yawned, whining Issei’s name softly as he caught his hand, gently prying his fingers from his hair. “Would you stop,” he protested weakly, snuggling further into his shoulder as he spoke, “you’re gonna make me fall asleep.”
Issei smiled softly, wrapping his arm around his husband and pulling him closer. His heart stuttered in his chest at the small sound of appreciation he made, and he couldn’t help but place a kiss to the top of his head. “That’s kind of the point, Makki
,
” he let out a low chuckle, “you haven’t slept in days. We’ll still be here when you wake up.”
“I know you will…” he grumbled, eyes drooping, but still fixed on the baby girl on Issei’s chest. “I just… I want to enjoy this a little longer, yeah? Everyone’s gonna come visit tomorrow… I want to have you two to myself for a bit.”
“Think of it this way,” Issei started, “she’ll probably be up again within the hour… don’t you want to rest just a little bit before that?”
Takahiro scrunched his nose, shaking his head. “‘M not sleeping unless you sleep…” he fought back another yawn, and tilted his head up to look up at his husband through his eyelashes. “Besides, if anything I should be the one telling you to get more sleep. I’m used to staying up late, you’re not.”
“Hmm maybe I wasn’t before, but now I am. I think you,” he tapped his nose gently, “are becoming a bad influence. I’m getting so used to going to sleep with you that now I can’t sleep without you.” He sat up slightly and reached over towards the bassinet, pulling it towards them and settling a sleeping Mei down. “But I’ll sleep if it means you will,” he continued, “you worked hard today, you deserve it.”
“Damn…” He mumbled, tucking his head in the crook of Issei’s neck and closing his eyes. “My plans… foiled. Now I
have
to sleep.”
Issei snorted, “a travesty, really. I’m so awful for this, aren’t I?”
A small nod, and he tightened his grip on his waist, tangling their legs together.
“You are, but I love you anyways.”
He smiled, resting his chin on the top of his head. “I love you too, Makki…”
Issei’s eyes slid shut, and he slept, one arm around his husband while his other hand lay in the bassinet next to them, a tiny fist wrapped tightly around his finger.
