Martha sat in the back of her parent's car next to two bags, picking at the uncomfortable, itchy fabric of the car seats.

She didn’t want to go to Bible Camp, she’d probably plead not to go if the consequences weren’t so severe. When she was told she’d be going to camp her face sunk, though she didn’t have many friends in her neighborhood except for Anna, who luckily was going with her, she knew camp would be no different.

When she arrived at her destination it was well into the night, she grabbed her bags and got out, she waved goodbye to her mother and father, walking into the camp.

The camp was separated by a large fence down the middle, with two lines going in either way. The pamphlet said it’d be separated by gender, sure, but it didn’t explain how small it’d be. Martha reread her pamphlet, unaware of her surroundings until an oddly tall boy for their age crashed into her, causing her to drop everything she’d been holding.

The boy scrambled to pick everything up as a boy in the other line cackled.

“Hey, Gabor, isn’t that your best friend in the girl's line?” He asked, nudging the shorter boy next to him.

“Jesus, Hanschen, don’t be so insensitive!” The other boy yelled back, and they both got lectured by the counselors.

Martha focused back on the boy, who by now was profusely apologizing.

“It’s okay, uh. I’m Martha, you?” She asked.

The taller boy with curly, frizzy brown hair then got dragged back to the boys line, where his peers mocked him and he just laughed it off.

Martha shrugged it off, heading to her cabin where four other girls would be staying that summer.

There were only a few other cabins, she wondered how populated the other ones were.

She sighed and sat on her bed, greeting the other girls who conversed and all sat on one bed. She unpacked, laid down and went to sleep.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Martha awoke to loud chatter that filled the whole room, she thought she’d only seen girls act this way in movies. She debated on joining or going back to sleeping, though both sounded nice it was clear she wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep from all of the chatter. She walked up to the girls, sitting down beside them.“Hi,” Martha uttered and they all looked up at her.“Hi,” They said in unison.“Uhh, I’m Martha,” She muttered, smiling awkwardly as she fidgeted with the ends of her braids.  “I’m Thea, we’re just talking about our plans for the summer.” Thea smiled, looking back up at Martha.“Camp isn’t your only plan..?” Martha asked, “After all it is most of our summer,”“Camp’s your only plan..?” Thea asked, giggling under her breath, “Anywho, I’m going to my Uncle Klaus’s house for a week or so, then the day before school starts I’m going to the beach.” “Ooo, fun!” One of the girls answered, “Hi, Martha, I’m Wendla!”“Hi.” Martha smiled, “What are your summer plans?”  “Oh, not much really… Just going through the forest, collecting flowers and all.” Wendla shrugged and Martha nodded.Martha continued to let the girls talk, thinking about the interaction with the boy she met last night. She’d never admit it but she found him rather cute, whether it was his hair, or his constant nervousness. She shrugged it off, but knowing his name could do no harm. Right?“So, uh.” Martha began, “There’s this boy..”“Oooo!” The group said, giggling.“Oh, hush! It’s nothing serious.” Martha laughed.“Well what’s his name?” Anna queried.“That’s.. Kinda the thing.” “Oh, well, what does he look like?” Thea butted in, “Maybe I’ll know.”“Uhh.. He has brown frizzy hair, he’s freakishly tall, and he has blueish green eyes.” Martha explained, her face warming up as she did so. “Ohh..” Thea frowned and Wendla giggled.“What’s wrong?” Martha furrowed her eyebrows. “It’s just..That’s Moritz and..” Wendla said before Thea interrupted her.“Moritz? Ew! I mean, keep him, he's all yours. He’s all ghost-like! His hair is all frizzy and messy but not in a good way! What guy do you know that wears eyeliner?” Thea went on a tangent about how gross she found Moritz.“Fine, then who do you like?” Martha scoffed, defending herself. “Melchi Gabor!” Thea squealed, smiling, “He’s so dreamy.”“Him? The one who got yelled at yesterday? I only heard his last name… so.” “Yes! Isn’t he cute?” Thea asked.“I mean, I guess..? But I prefer Moritz.” Martha replied honestly.“Ewww.. Him again?” Thea fake gagged, “Melchi Gabor is like Patrick Swayze, Moritz is like… Robert Smith.” “I think Robert Smith is kinda cute,” Martha shrugged and all the girls laughed.“How?” Another girl, Melitta asked.“Ugh! I don’t have to defend myself to anyone here.” Martha whined.“Whatever. Doesn’t bible study start soon? We should get going if we don’t wanna be late,” Thea said as she got up, the other girls following in pursuit.
