It happened just a few weeks after Kai had come out to his friends. Which, Kai feels he should be thankful he was already out, otherwise this situation would be a whole lot more awkward. Kai had finished up his training and walked into his room, stretching his arms behind his back. As much as he didnt want to admit it, he smelled bad. Like, teenage boy with fire powers that just ran around in place for like an hour bad. Plus, his hair was starting to get greasy, so he figured he could use the shower anyways. As he walked into the master bathroom though, he discovered it was already occupied. Cole was standing there, wearing nothing but a towel around his waist. Kai took one good look at him before he felt the ends of his hair light up. His face was red, and the literal burning sensation on his scalp wasnt helping. Cole gave a confused smirk, and Kai quickly turned and exited the bathroom, running back to his room. He places his hands on either side of his desk, looking into the mirror. His hair was fine! it wasnt charred or burnt at all, it was like it never even happened. Kai decided to try something. He wracked his brain for something that would make him flustered, just to test out this new feature. Of course, the first thing that came to his mind was Cole. The image of Cole fresh out of the shower was more then enough for Kai to go over the edge. He looked at himself in the mirror. The flame didnt actually last long, only about a second or too. It was more like a small explosion, then it just turned into smoke. Just like before, once the smoke cleared up there was no sign of burn damage on his head. Its a good thing that the only person who saw it happen was the guy that would never let him live it down. Kai was in for one hell of a week.

Kai stayed in his room all morning, not knowing what the hell he was gonna say to Cole when the time came. This was just ridiculous. When Kai said he was at the hospital because his hair was sick, he didn’t mean literally! He had to go outside at some point. He was getting hungry, it had been a whole two hours since the last time he ate. Kai had an idea. A ridiculous idea, but it was an idea. —- “Woah Kai, rockin the new hair.” His hair was down. No gel, no hairspray, nothing. His wavy brown hair was resting just below his ears on either side of his head, freshly conditioned. Kai walked into the kitchen with his fists clenched at his sides. He sat down at the table and avoided eye contact with Lloyd and Cole, who were sitting across from him. He just nodded affirmatively, and looked at the table. Jay walked in through the front door, holding a brown box. “Hey guys, guess who brought donuts!” There was a collective “yess!!” and the box was placed on the table. Jay looked to Kai. “Woah dude, stealing my look much? Yeah I know, kinda hard not to be jealous of this killer face card.” Jay looked smugly at Kai, which was returned by a glare. Kai stood up and headed for the door. “Im still pretty tired, I might go back to sleep for a little.” As Kai turns to leave, Cole stands up from the table. “Yeah I agree with Kai, I didn’t sleep well last night. Might head back to bed.” Kay walked out of the kitchen and towards his room, trying not to interact with Cole at all. When he gets to his door, he feels a hand on his shoulder, and Kai freezes up. “Hey, hope you sleep well dude.” Cole says, a small smile on his face. He turns to his room, but just before he opens the door, he speaks again. “By the way, you should wear your hair down more often. Makes you even cuter.” And with that, Cole walks into his room, and shuts the door behind him. Kai is caught off guard and is once again met with a small burning sensation, this time by his ears. ..shit.

Kai tried everything he could to not leave his room the following day. Unfortunately, being a ninja requires being a ninja. He almost got to be alone all day, but around 9 PM, he was asked to go on a mission. Lloyd, Cole, and Kai were sent to go investigate some suspicious activity on the other side of Ninjago. Lloyd, being Lloyd, made it his personal mission to track down his dad and stick it to him, which left Kai and Cole alone. Awesome. Kai was doing everything in his power to ignore Cole. He was checking his phone, looking at his watch, pretending to care about road signs, all the works. Cole was unfortunately not amused. “Hey K, Whats up with you? You look like you’re running away from a death sentence.” He pretty much was, but he didnt have the energy or confidence to… talk. “oh yeah yknow just uh yeah its just yknow.” Cole raised his eyebrows. “no… I dont think i know.”Kai had an idea. “Hey Cole, sorry… buddy. my guy. dude. i gotta head to the bathroom be back in like a sec!” Kai ran into the nearest store and entered the bathroom. He turned on the sink and dipped his head under it, wetting his hair. Perfect! Hair cant catch on fire if its wet. Genius, Kai. He walked out of the store with an exuberant amount of confidence, and walked right up to Cole. “So uh, whats up with you?” Kai said, almost in a flirtatious tone. Cole raised one eyebrow and smiled. He could play along. They started walking, and Cole wrapped his arm around Kai’s waist, slightly pulling him closer. Kai took a deep breath, expecting a burning sensation, but to no avail. It worked! Kai turned to look at Cole, more confident then ever. They stopped walking, and Kai put his hand on Cole’s jaw, tilting his head up slightly. “What are you doing mister? Trying to pursue me so fowardly? I never wouldve expected that from you!” Cole gave him a ‘you-really-wanna-do-this-right-now’ smile, and put his hand on Kai’s jaw, with his thumb grazing Kai’s bottom lip. “were you expecting this?” Cole leaned in, and connected their lips. Kai was surprised, but he quickly returned the kiss and wrapped his arms around Cole’s neck. The kiss deepened, and the two quickly forgot about their surroundings. To Kai’s dismay, the water in his hair evaporated, and he felt a burning sensation around his ears. He pulled away from Cole, and touched the embers. “Fuck, I thought the water would work..” He sighed, and looked at the ends of his hair annoyed. Cole laughed a little bit. “That’s why you’re hair was all wet?” Kai nodded, embarrassed. Cole looked at him with a smile. “Don’t hide it. it’s cute, really. It matches… you.” Kai smiled. He felt his cheeks warm up, as well as his ears. He leaned in for another kiss, to which Cole returned.
