Narya took her small son’s hand, and led him out the front door, closing and locking it behind her. It was a perfect day for taking Richard out to the tundra. He was full of wonder about everything in his world. Just last night, his father, Douglas Thompson, had shown him how the mechanism of the front door lock worked. Richard liked anything shiny.Later, just before Richard went to sleep, his father’s bowling trophy turned up missing. After his parents’ frantic search, it turned up in Richard’s crib.“I want this for my new toy, Mommy!” Richard announced.Narya laughed. “No, my son. That is inappropriate as a toy for you. Here, take this toy snowy owl instead.”Richard accepted it. Then, he went to sleep.Narya and Doug smiled at each other, as they closed the door to their son’s nursery.“It’s quite a job controlling his curiosity,” Doug sighed.“Not to mention his powers,” Narya added. “Yesterday, he frightened a neighbor by turning into a polar bear cub. It was quite unnerving.”“I can imagine.” Doug shuddered. “But in any case, you understand his powers and can channel them in the right direction.”Narya pondered this the next morning, as she and Richard prepared to fly to the tundra. Yes, no one could control him better than she.
