Work Text
Natsuki’s emotions have been conflicted for the past week. Walking down the hallway to lunch made her think about things her brain thought were relevant. Ever since the day she confided in Yuri near the school stairs, she has felt genuinely happy to have someone to rely on. Someone who wouldn’t hurt her. Someone she could even grow to care for. So this was a promising sign.On the other hand, she lost friends who had meant a lot to her. Even if they were jerks, she still had some form of comradery towards them and good times to look back on. And then, she ended it. Without even seeing their reactions. After her fear subsided and she had time to herself, she felt simultaneously light and empty. Natsuki should feel good that she cut out the toxic people in her life and now has more healthy relationships with her club members. Yet the feeling of loneliness hit harder than expected. The complicated emotions hurt her head as she groaned in frustration.“Dealing with some rough shit?”Shocked to hear an unfamiliar voice speaking to Natsuki, she turned to see a frankly odd sight. Two girls were walking alongside her, both looking pretty funny. The first girl was a short, chubby orange-haired gal with yellow eyes and short hair with two pigtails accompanied by yellow hair ties. The second girl was a taller, slimmer lady with long, dark-blue hair that reminded her of Yuri’s hairstyle. She had blue eyes and a red comically-sized bow that surprisingly fit her well. Natsuki stared for a moment before giving an eloquent, “Huh?”“Oh sorry,” the blue hair girl started with a smile, “My girlfriend here has a loud mouth and can’t keep her thoughts to herself sometimes.”‘Girlfriend? You can announce that kinda thing so casually?’ Natsuki thought as she tried to formulate a response. “It’s fine, I guess.”Now that she thought about it, she hasn’t seen these two girls around the school before. Were they new? Besides her club members, she hasn’t seen anyone quite as colorful as these two. They looked so out of place compared to the other students. “You guys just transferred here or something?”“Yeah, the first school we were at was shit, so now we’re here,” the orange-haired lass spoke with a hint of edge to her voice. The long haired girl smiled apologetically and said, “Forgive her rough tone, people around here haven’t been super kind to us since we’ve arrived.”Natsuki nodded awkwardly, responding with, “It’s fine, I get it. People around here can kinda suck. I’m sure if you find the right people, you’ll be good.” She turned to walk towards the cafeteria when she was interrupted by an excitable voice.“Well so far you’re the only person who hasn’t glared or shown fear at us so, maybe we already have!” With a Cheshire Cat smile, she extended her hand to the pinkette and said, “My name is Pipimi and this Popuko. It’s nice to meet you! What’s your name?”Natsuki didn’t know how a random groan somehow led to this situation and honestly, her comfort zone was being pushed. She wanted nothing more than to leave this conversation. Then again, these girls seemed like they were having a hard time trying to fit in. What if this meeting ended up being a blessing in disguise like the Literature Club was? It was entirely possible; however, if she was to do this, she would do it cautiously.“The name’s Natsuki! Same to you.” She shook both girl's hands, with Popuko’s grip being more firm than Pipimi’s. Natsuki’s stomach began to grumble and in slight embarrassment, she said “Heh, guess we should be gettin’ to lunch now.”“Lead the way, boss!” After a few minutes of walking to the cafeteria and getting some lackluster food, the odd trio found a table to sit at. Knowing nothing about these girls, Natsuki admittedly was feeling a little awkward as Popuko and Pipimi seemed to be chatting without recognizing her presence. This feeling was familiar, one she was used to. Maybe after this, she could go to class, these girls would forget about her, and things would go back to—“Hey, how do you feel about manga?” Natsuki looked up in surprise to see that Popuko had addressed her. Was this a trick question? Were these girls trying to make fun of her? The question sounded genuine but could’ve been a trap. Before she could think of a response, Popuko pulled out something from her bag Natsuki just now noticed she had on her. “Cause I made a manga myself.” Popuko grinned in self satisfaction. Natsuki could hardly believe it.Pipimi clapped lightly while saying, “Yes, my darling Popuko is a talented artist whose work has gone unrecognized by the close minded public.” Popuko blushed from those words and Natsuki actually smiled slightly with how adorable the scene was.Natsuki looked at the cover which read ‘POP TEAM EPIC.’ As she started looking through the pages, she was honestly impressed with the artwork and how the cute artstyle worked with the crude humor. Comedy manga weren’t her all time favorite, however she could appreciate some from time to time. Some of the panels even got chuckles out of her.“This is actually really good! Looks so dang professional. Did you actually do this yourself, Popuko?”“Of course I drew this! All of my fuckin’ sweat and tears and spit went into making this,” the lemon-eyed girl said with a gleam in her eyes. Pipimi rolled her eyes affectionately. The analogy was gross, yet Natsuki could see how real the passion was in the pages. “Well to answer your question, I love manga! And yours is actually really cool.” Instead of the cocky smirk, Popuko had a real smile for the first time and mumbled a thanks toward her.A warm feeling fully enveloped Natsuki for the first time in a week and she felt happier than she expected. Her earlier fears were still lingering but lessened the more she spent time with these girls. Taking the first step is scary, but it’s also the most important step in building a relationship. She decided to be brave and start truly befriending Popuko and Pipimi. Natsuki took a deep breath, grinned and asked, “Have you gals ever heard of ‘Parfait Girls?’”
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Two weeks have passed since Natsuki befriended Popuko and Pipimi. Her worries about being bullied or ignored were unfounded, as Natsuki and the girls hung out as often as they could. As a group, Natsuki had so much fun, but also some realizations. During this time, she had begun to learn things about the unusual pair.Popuko and Pipimi were both aggressive girls. Not in the trash talking way, more so they were very willing to fight anyone who talked trash to the friend group. The aggression was never directed towards Natsuki but sometimes it did make her feel nervous. Last weekend, the trio went to a mall to hang out for the first time. Unprompted, a middle-aged man shouted sexual comments towards them. The result was Popuko buying a full can of soda and chucking it as hard as she could at the man, while Pipimi using every degrading swear in the book to rub salt in the wound. They left the mall in a hurry and spent the rest of the day at a park instead. The second thing Natsuki noticed was that the two girls had odd ways of showing affection. Popuko opened up to her more as time passed, enough so that she added Natsuki to her ‘Pop Team Epic’ manga, which she thought was a sweet gesture. Pipimi learned about Natsuki’s Literature Club and her friends. She was accepting and would help her by reading her poems and earnestly giving her thoughts. The final thing she learned still dumbfounds her when she thinks about it: Despite how weird they are, Popuko and Pipimi were way better than her old friends. Natsuki never felt scared to speak up or obligated to kiss up to them with cupcakes alone. She still made the gals her famous cat-cakes, however it felt more like a gift than an obligation. Even the duo’s teasing was friendly in nature, for once not making Natsuki feel like absolute garbage afterwards. These girls weren’t the Literature Club. No one could replace them. However, it would be a lie to say there wasn’t something special with Natsuki’s new friendships. Now she just needed to not lose them too. Around lunchtime, the trio sat at their usual table, chatting up a storm about how Popuko found the worst manga she had ever read.“Oh Popu-Chan, you’re so fuckin funny!” Pipimi exclaimed as she slammed the table with her fists. While Pipimi was laughing up a storm at Popuko’s crude descriptions of the story, a random thought came to Natsuki that she’s surprised she didn’t ask earlier. “Hey, can I ask you guys something?”When Pipimi got ahold of herself, she wiped a tear and said, “You’re already asking us something but sure Nats, go ahead.”Ignoring the nickname she wasn’t too fond of, Natsuki asked, “How did you both get together? And how can you be so bold about it when you know people talk crap all the time?” This question seemed to surprise both of the girls as they went wide eyed for a moment before going back to normal.Popuko started with a lazy smile, “Well firstly, why should we give a fuck about what some nobody thinks of our love? I don’t, and if anyone dares try to talk shit about my Pipimi-Chan, I’ll just beat their ass.” She cracked her knuckles to emphasize her point.Pipimi continued on, “I feel the same way. Also, why wouldn’t I want to show off how cute Popu-Chan is?” She tickled Popuko’s chin with her finger, causing her to smile like a goofy idiot. She carried on with, “And it’s quite simple how we got together.” Natsuki paid full attention as she shuffled on her seat in anticipation. “One day around middle school, I was walking down the halls and saw Popuko. She was yelling to try and get attention to her manga, which was just starting at the time. Everyone else got startled or confused, but me? I know this sounds clichè, but just by seeing her, I knew she was my everything. She felt the same and we’ve been terrorizing haters as a couple ever since.”A few seconds passed. Then Natsuki blurted out, “Uh, is that it?”Pipimi raised an eyebrow at this reaction. “Yeah? Is there an issue?”Natsuki waved her hand nonchalantly as she said, “Nah. Well, kinda. With how the two of you are, I was expecting, I don’t know, like a big love story that developed overtime. But you guys fell in love at first sight? I don’t mean to be a jerk, but it seems impossible.”Pipimi shrugged her shoulders. “It’s different for everyone. Some people slowly fall in love over the years, while me and Popuko are planning our honeymoon in Brazil. Speaking of which,” she began with a mischievous expression, “why are you so curious? Is there something we should know?”Natsuki blushed at the insinuation and began stammering, “N-no, of course not! Can a girl ask about romance without having a crush on someone else?”Popuko’s cat-like grin widened as she realized it was Natsuki teasing time. “Oh? Pipimi didn’t say shit about liking someone, that was all you.” She got closer to the pink girl’s face, a cocky smirk staying the whole time. “Sooo, who’s the lucky boy?”Natsuki recoiled as she said, “There’s no boy!”Pipimi returned Popuko’s grin and said, “Ok, so it is a girl?” Natsuki’s body froze up and her silence told the blue-haired girl her answer. “Natsuki.” Pipimi grabbed her shoulders and looked deep into her dark, pink eyes. “You need to tell us EVERYTHING.”At this point, Natsuki had to weigh her options. Option one: She could lie, they’d see through her lie and won’t ever shut up about it. Option two: She tells them the truth and they won’t ever shut up about it. Option three: She pretends they don’t exist anymore so hopefully they stop asking and get bored. She knew option three would never work and option one would just delay the inevitable. So, albeit reluctantly, she went with option two. “She’s a girl from the Literature Club.” This was technically the truth, just not the whole truth—“So, you mean the one you’d write the poems?” Pipimi inquired, becoming more intrigued when Natsuki’s face became redder. How did she know?! I thought I was at least somewhat subtle!“Hm, it can’t be Monika so let’s rule her out.” Natsuki gave her a flat look. “Whaaaat, I’m just being realistic. Besides, she doesn’t seem like the type you’d go for. Which just leaves Sayori…” she paused, looking at Natsuki’s face, “…or Yuri.” Which caused Natsuki to look away. “Bingo.”“Oh fine, so I like Yuri! Go ahead, tell me that I’m once again way out of my league or that I just don’t have a chance!” Natsuki didn’t mean to shout that last part and she immediately felt guilty when her friends flinched from her words. “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to y-yell. It’s just something I… don’t like mentioning. Heck, if you girls didn’t admit you were dating, I would’ve never told you about it.”There was a tense silence for a moment. Oh no. Is this it? Have my worst fears finally come true? Natsuki didn't dare look into their eyes, dread building up as the silence continued. Suddenly, she felt hands grip her shoulders firmly. The pinkette looked up, shocked to see Popuko with a serious expression on her face.“Look, we’re sorry about the teasing. Don’t think we hate ya or anything dumb like that, cause we don’t. You’re just emotional right now cause you have someone you like, right?” Natsuki shakily nodded. Popuko smiled and said, “I get it. I was, and still am, a lovesick fool for Pipimi. But don’t worry Nats!” Popuko throws her arm over her and dawns a determined look on her face. “With our help, you’ll sweep this Yuri girl off her feet and fucking win her heart with your pinkish charms!”Silence. Then a snort. The silence broke from Natsuki’s laughter as she began gripping her sides. With the two girls looking confused, Natsuki clarified, “Sorry, I just didn't expect the phrase “pinkish charms.’” After a moment, she clears her throat and goes, “I honestly don’t have any hopes of Yuri liking me back, me confessing even less. However, with you two gremlins on my side, I think I may actually have somewhat of a shot. So, what should we do?”Popuko and Pipimi looked at each other and smiled. “Well, it’s quite simple. Just tell her she’s your entire universe and confess your undying love,” Pipimi suggested.Natsuki’s face dropped as she said, “Are you serious? Just cause it worked with you two doesn’t mean it’s gonna fucking work-“ She slapped her hand over her mouth in realization as Popuko cheered.“About fucking time! I knew we’d get you to slip at some point!” Pipimi began to join Popuko in the giggling.Natsuki facepalmed in embarrassment and responded with, “Let’s just come up with a real plan already.”
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Yuri was worried. Not exactly much of a shocker, Yuri tended to get anxious often. This feeling was different. A concern for one of her friends, the rosy-haired, bold Natsuki.Yuri was certainly taken aback when Natsuki told her about the friends she had suddenly acquired. The whole statement seemed unusual since she assumed Natsuki would not take chances with others outside of the club for a while—To heal from the horrific experience. Then, all of a sudden, she found two girls who very quickly became her companions? It all seemed so dubious to Yuri. The complication the dark-purple haired woman found was that she had no proof of anything actually devious happening behind the scenes. For all she knew, she could be blowing this whole situation out of proportion and Natsuki was actually alright. The other alternative genuinely scared her: Natsuki could be getting forced to say nothing but positives about these bullies. Yuri didn’t know. She needs to talk to a certain Club President about this.Yuri spots Monika sitting at her desk writing down something club-related. She decides that Monika would be the best to discuss this situation since, as far as she’s aware, Sayori doesn’t know about Natsuki’s old friend situation. The tall girl walked gingerly towards the brunette’s desk and cleared her throat. Monika looked up from her paper.“Hello Monika. I hope I wasn’t interrupting your assignments.”Monika smiled and responded, “Don’t worry about it Yuri, you’re fine.” She sat up straight, giving Yuri her full attention. “What’s up?”Yuri fidgets with her hair, trying to get her thoughts straight before she says something potentially witless or inaccurate. “Well, it’s about Natsuki…”“Oh?” Monika seemed surprised. She thought the two were getting along much better after she delivered the letter. “Are you having problems with her?”“N-no! Of course not!” Yuri blurted out. She looked around to see if anyone was around, which luckily was not the case. “It’s just… I’m very concerned for her wellbeing.”“What? What’s wrong with Natsuki? Is she ok?” Monika now shared Yuri’s concerned look.“That’s the main problem: I unfortunately haven’t an inkling if she is ok or not.” Yuri closed her eyes and took a breath. “Do you remember Natsuki’s old brutish friends?”“Yeah?”“Well, recently Natsuki has told me she has made friends with two enigmatic girls that seemed to appear out of thin air. I know this may seem foolish, but I fear that Natsuki may be getting hurt and she isn’t telling me! Maybe to protect them, maybe to protect herself, I’m not entirely sure and… it scares me, Monika. I don’t want to see her in pain again.”Monika dawned a serious look as she absorbed what Yuri had told her and had quite a few thoughts going through her mind. How would she address this without causing Yuri more anxiety? She’d need to choose her words carefully.“Well, let me ask you something, Yuri. Do you trust Natsuki?”This made Yuri pause. “I… I honestly don’t know.” She raised her hands defensively, “I-I mean I want to, but… it’s extremely difficult when she has lied for my sake. I want to believe that Natsuki’s friends really are decent companions, that Natsuki has fully opened up to me, and yet…”Monika nods her head. “I see. Then you don’t believe Natsuki trusts you?” Yuri went silent. “I’m not saying you’re wrong, Yuri. I’m just trying to understand the context. However, I believe you should trust her.” Yuri gave Monika a skeptical look. She continued, “She has shown that while she did lie, she told you the truth when she easily could have kept it to herself. Natsuki isn’t perfect, but I believe if she was hurting, she would go to you. Because you two are good friends.” Monika tried to give her a reassuring smile.Yuri sighed. “Maybe you’re right, Monika, however I’m still not fully convinced. I would have to see it myself.”Before Monika could respond to that, the club room door opened to show a very familiar guest. Natsuki still wasn’t confident if this plan was perfect. Oh sure, it was way better than most of the suggestions that Popuko gave for the past two days, but it still didn’t stop her from being worried things could go wrong. As she and the excitable duo walked down the hall, she remembered the conversation leading up to this situation.
“No, again, that is a stupid idea!” Natsuki exclaimed.
Popuko frowned and threw her hands up in frustration. “Listen, we cannot help you with shit if we literally know nothing about this girl!”
Both girls stopped talking as Pipimi snapped her fingers. “That’s it! We don’t know anything about this girl!”
Popuko looked confused as she looked at Natsuki and went back to Pipimi. “Yeah, I just said that?”
Undeterred, Pipimi smiled and said, “Think about it, my beloved Popu-Chan. We have no info on Natsuki’s crush, so the logical step is joining the Literature Club! We’ll join the club, maybe get some new friends, and most importantly, get information on this Yuri character.”
Natsuki looked unsure. “I don’t know girls, I feel like that plan could easily backfire or get me caught. How would it work?”
Pipimi’s grin became wider. “Weeeellll, you’ve always wanted friends to talk to about manga right?” The taller girl wiggled her eyebrows in an exaggerated fashion.
Natsuki realized what she was putting down and replied, “Oh yes! This could actually work!” She bit her lip in concentration as she said, “Ok, after school I will go into the club room and ask Monika if I can show around some new people who want to join the Literature Club. You both have to make an effort to seem like you actually care about literature, otherwise this plan falls apart.”
Popuko groaned and said, “Ugh I’m already not doing that well with grades, and now I have to do more reading?”
Pipimi kissed her cheek and said, “This is for a good cause, love. And don’t worry, I will help you with anything you need.” Popuko blushed and didn’t say anything after that.
“Alright, I’ll meet up with you girls at the end of the day.”
The trio of colorful gals have arrived at the clubroom door. Natsuki lowered her voice and said, “Ok, I’m gonna go in there and ask Monika if she’s cool with you guys checking out the club. If yes, I’ll say you can come in, if not, we can try again another day.”“What!?” Popuko hissed quietly. “I’m missing my Ultraseven show right now!”Pipimi conked Popuko on the head softly. “We’ll watch it later Popu-Chan. You got this Nats!” Pipimi emphasized her statement with a thumbs up.Natsuki took a deep breath and opened the clubroom door. She spotted Monika chatting with Yuri at her desk. Monika’s smile seemed brighter than usual as she said, “Oh hello Natsuki! I’m surprised you’re here this early.”Natsuki grinned sheepishly and responded, “Heh, yeah. Hey Monika, sorry for interrupting your guy’s conversation but can I ask you for a favor?”Monika raised her eyebrow but kept her grin. “As long as it isn’t at the expense of our club members, sure! What do you have in mind?”Natsuki rubbed the back of her head as she began to explain. “Well Monika, I have some people who are actually interested in the club and they’ve asked me to come show them around. You know, see if they’re interested.”Monika looked very intrigued at the idea. While Yuri’s look of shock would’ve been amusing any other time, Natsuki was on a mission. This all depended on the club president. The brunette looked at Yuri for a moment, then back to Natsuki and cheerily said, “Of course you can! We’ve been meaning to look for new club members and this is perfect! Although, we might want to ask Sayori, too.”“Uh Monika, I don’t know how long that will take though,” Natsuki said hesitantly. Then, a screech on the floor is heard.“Hey guysss!” The three girls turn their heads to the door and see a friendly face poking out. “There’s these excited-looking girls out here! Should I let them in?” Sayori asked.Natsuki sometimes thought the universe had a funny sense of humor. Monika seemed to agree as she chuckled and said, “Yes Sayori, you may let them in.”Giving a thumbs up, Sayori went back in the hallway and after a few seconds, the three girls came into the classroom. A small gasp was heard from Yuri, and Monika let out an audible, “Oh my.” This didn't seem good.“Eheh, Monika, Yuri and Sayori, meet my friends, Popuko and Pipimi.” Natsuki said nervously.“Sup,” Pupoko said simply, ignoring the concerned faces on the brunette and purple-haired girl.“It is very lovely to meet you all. Natsuki has told us both all about you,” Pipimi said calmly. “I hope we can be good friends.”“Wait a second… Popuko and Pipimi?” Sayori said aloud. “Aren’t you the girls who were rumored to be thugs who are attached to the mafia?”Tense silence entered the room as for the first time since Natsuki had met her, Pipimi frowned and said, “Well, shit.”
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
While Yuri looked shocked at Pipimi’s swearing, Monika laughed nervously and tried to salvage this interaction. “Sayori, that isn’t very nice. You shouldn’t be so rude to our guests-““Actually,” Pipimi interrupted, “The rumors are semi accurate.” Despite the shocked looks she was suddenly receiving, Pipimi continued, “In our old school, Popuko and I were constantly harassed and bullied for being queer and “not normal” to put it lightly. And, well, we were tired of taking everyone’s shit.” Yuri flinched again. “So, the one time we finally fight back, we get caught, blamed and transferred here. Suddenly, rumors started to spread, making things seem worse than they actually were. Like, the fucking mafia?” Pipimi laughed at the idea. “Ah, the things people come up with.”Popuko spoke up. “Yeah, but now we’re here to get a new fresh start and it wouldn’t have been possible without our best buddy Natsuki here,” she pointed to Natsuki who had been desperately trying to wrap her head around what she just heard. “So please miss club president lady, don’t judge us for our shitty past, but rather how we act now.”“Well said Popu-Chan!” Pipimi said cheerily.Monika was just as confused as everyone else seemed. The prevalent thought that repeated in her head was, These are Natsuki’s friends?! However, as she thought more about it, a realization hit her. No, this is perfect. Yuri was so concerned about what her friends were like and now we have that chance to see it for ourselves. They seem genuine enough, and these girls have clearly been through some hard times. They deserve a chance. Monika returned Pipimi’s cheery grin with her trademark smile as she said, “Fair enough. Welcome to the Literature Club, Popuko and Pipimi! Just, please try not to swear too much here.”Not noticing Yuri’s look of absolute disbelief, Natsuki let out a sigh of relief she didn’t know she was holding in. She would definitely have to ask them about the whole “being severely bullied” thing later; right now she has more important things to worry about.“So, how did Natsuki convince both of you to come check out the Literature Club?” Sayori asked enthusiastically, completely ignoring the serious tone just a minute ago.“Well, Natsuki told me and my girlfriend-“ Sayori dramatically gasped, cutting off Pipimi. “Ok, I deserved that. What’s so shocking now?”“You and her are dating? You can do that?!”Another first is that Pipimi seemed genuinely taken aback. “Yes? You do know that women can date other women right?”“No, I genuinely never knew! Is it the same with guys?”“Yes?!” Pipimi was not used to talking with such an unpredictable person. Things would’ve been easier if she hated gays, at least then this Sayori girl would have some queer knowledge.Sayori’s eyes became wide as she said, “Just gimme a moment guys, I need to think about something.”As Sayori stepped aside, Pipimi blinked blankly and said, “Anyways, ahem, me and Popuko became friends with Natsuki and she one day showed me one of her nice poems, which led us to learn about your club.” Reinvigorated in the conversation, Pipimi grabbed Popuko’s cheeks like she was a sandwich. “And as much as I love my dear Popu-Chan, she desperately needs some literary prowess so she can expand her vocabulary.” Popuko lightly pushed Pipimi off as she blushed while mumbling some quiet retorts.Monika listened intently, chewing her lip as she absorbed Pipimi’s words. Natsuki calmed down a little, relieved that Pipimi was doing the talking instead of Popuko. Yuri meanwhile was very skeptical of the two girls, trying to find cracks in their potential facade. And Sayori was standing in the corner with her phone, having a crisis on just learning gay people existed.“So, if it’s not too much trouble, please tell us what else we are to expect being here,” Pipimi asked. While Monika was explaining the basic activities the club had to offer and Sayori rejoining the conversation after being fine with queer individuals, Yuri had been stuck in her own thoughts. She felt as if the universe was playing a cruel joke on her. Somehow, right as they were discussing Natsuki’s new friends, she invites them to the club? Yuri couldn’t have written a better poem about irony if she tried. This should be proof that her friends are not as brutish as her old friends, and yet they have admitted to participating in violence at their old school! Granted, it was because they were harassed, I can relate, but I could never physically harm someone. Has Natsuki been harmed? Why does the blue girl look like me and Monika combined?! These thoughts made Yuri feel worse and she almost didn’t realize she was being addressed.“Excuse me?” Yuri looked up from the ground. It was the blue-haired girl she was just thinking about, Pipimi. “You’re Yuri, right?”Not used to the new intimidating girl, Yuri nodded timidly.Pipimi gave her a patient smile. “Well, Yuri, Natsuki has told us you are the fanciest person in the club and that you’re currently reading fantasy?”Yuri seemed surprised. Why would Natsuki be talking about me to these people? She nodded again, fidgeting with her hair once more.“Oh nice! I’ve been meaning to get into fantasy, but unfortunately Popuko has been making me read a story about Bigfoot and I haven’t gotten to read much else.” Yuri gave her a look as if the tall girl had grown a second head. “Yeah, it’s a whole thing. But, whenever you feel comfortable, gimme some suggestions. I’d sincerely appreciate it.” Pipimi smiled at her before walking back to Popuko’s side.Yuri didn’t know what to think about such an unpredicted conversation. Why would this strange girl want to be friendly with her? Was it a trick? Yet, the idea of sharing her interests with someone who seemed genuine with their engrossment was, admittedly, nice. This did not mean she was fully won over yet. The tall purple girl needed more information before she could make a conclusion on how to feel about the new girls. So she kept silent and watched, hoping Natsuki’s laughs were real. Monika chuckled at the drawn panels of the ‘POP TEAM EPIC’ manga Popuko had given her. She hadn’t expected another artist like Sayori but was pleasantly surprised. “I love how you drew Natsuki here! Really brings out her cat-like personality!”“Yeah, you’re a really good artist Popuko!” Sayori said with a toothy grin. “Although I do hope you cut on the swearing more.”“Awe c’mon, I’m already holding back for the club!” Popuko whined.Natsuki joined Sayori in her smug smile. “Sorry Popuko, Vice President rules!” Popuko let out an exaggerated groan as Monika clapped to get the club’s attention.“Ok everyone! I believe we will now have two new members of the club! Popuko, Pipimi, we’re so happy to have you!” Monika looked towards her original club members who joined in on the clapping. Pipimi did a bow while Popuko looked bashful at all the positive attention she’s gotten. “Now, I believe the first order of business is for one of you to bring a book for you to share tomorrow. So that the rest of us can get to know your literary tastes.”“Sounds good!” Popuko and Pipimi both replied. Nine rounds of rock-paper-scissors later, it was decided that Pipimi would go first.“Alright, you are all dismissed!” The girls all begin getting their stuff together as Natsuki rushes over to the new members.“We did it! This was a mostly successful plan! Although, really didn’t need your backstories. Now it’s gonna be hard for you to get information from Yuri if she’s afraid of you guys! And speaking of that, we still need to talk about the bullying thing later,” Natsuki said, looking like she’d pass out from exhaustion.“Calm yourself Nats,” Pipimi said with a scolding tone, “You making aggressive faces at us isn’t gonna help either.” She then smiled and added, “Besides, I’ve already planted the seed. Just let me do my job and things will be fine.”Natsuki looked at Popuko to see if she knew what the plan was, only for her to shrug in response. The pinkette sighed and said, “Alright, I trust you. Now, let’s get ready for tomorrow!”The girls didn’t know that someone was overhearing them and began a plan of their own.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
“I’m sorry, what?!” Natsuki asked in absolute disbelief.“Yeah, the real killer in the movie was the guy’s baby fetus brother thing that lived in his chest. At the end of the movie, the baby used its psychic powers until the main character shot a bunch of explosives and killed it. Which apparently didn’t fuckin’ matter since at the end, the fetus monster thing somehow pops out of the girl’s body and says, ‘mommy,’” Popuko explained.“… What?!”“Yeah, it was fucking weird,” Popuko said nonchalantly. It was an average Friday. Natsuki, Popuko and Pipimi were walking towards the club, chatting about random stuff. Somehow the conversation turned to Popuko talking about a weird film she saw the night before.“Yes, Popu-Chan likes her bizarre films. Sometimes it can be quite fun because you’ll never know what you’re getting into!” Pipimi said with her trademark cheerfulness.Natsuki gave Pipimi a flat stare as she replied, “Pipimi, sometimes I think you’re the purest example of ‘love is blind.’”The taller girl responded, “Tsk, tsk, tsk Nats, your expression is horribly mistaken. That’s just one of the many charms that makes me love Popuko so much. I’d never trade her for anyone else in this world.”Natsuki wondered how she was able to say those kinds of things with a straight face. No, that wasn’t right. She wouldn’t say it out loud, but the pink girl admired how Pipimi could be so unapologetically herself. Deep down, she wishes she could have even half of her confidence. No time to worry about those thoughts however, as it was club time.As the trio entered, it was a serene scene. Monika was happily in conversation with Sayori, and Yuri was reading a book in her seat. Natsuki almost didn’t want to ruin the moment with a greeting. That was Popuko’s pleasure entirely. “Wassap bitches?” This resulted in halting Monika and Sayori's conversation, Yuri looking up from her book with a scowl, Natsuki facepalming in disappointment and Pipimi smacking the back of Popuko’s head.“Sorry Monika, Popuko is still not used to the whole not-swearing thing,” Pipimi said apologetically.Monika, recovering from the interruption, said, “Oh, you’re good! I’m just glad you’re keeping it in mind. Now, we’ve got 10 minutes before we start activities, so go ahead and relax for a little while.”Pipimi nodded as she and Popuko followed Natsuki’s lead to the closet. They huddled together as to not let what they say be heard by the others. Natsuki spoke first. “Alright so, Pipimi, are you gonna tell me your plan now or are you gonna keep being vague for no reason?”Pipimi said, “I cannot tell you. Because if you know, you’ll probably overthink it and mess up my flow. You’ll just need to trust me.” Natsuki rolled her eyes but nodded in reluctant disapproval.Popuko looked in the closet, spotting Natsuki’s manga collection. “Wow, there’s naked women on some of these covers!”Natsuki blushed a deep red. “Don’t look at those!”Popuko grinned. “I’m surprised none of the girls figured out you were a little fruity with your mangas giving a big fat indication!”For a moment, Natsuki’s blush went away as she thought about it. “Weirdly enough, Sayori saw one of them and didn’t suspect anything.”“What didn’t I expect?”The three girls turned around to see a surprising visitor- Sayori herself.Natsuki decided to take control of the conversation and began with, “Oh heeeey Sayori, what’s up? I’m just showing the girls my manga collection, boring stuff really!”“Oh no, I heard my name being brought up, and also Yuri’s the other day.” As the three gals began shriveling under the bubbly girl’s accusatory glare, she asked “What’s really going on here? Is Yuri’s birthday coming up or something?”Natsuki looked at Pipimi for guidance on what to do, only to be given hand gestures that stated, ‘C’mon, just say it.’ Natsuki groaned and said, “Alright, we’ll tell you but you need to promise you can keep a secret. Can you do that?”Sayori smiled brightly and said, “Of course!” Yuri kept watch at her desk, glancing towards the left corner of the classroom where Natsuki was. The fact that she led those girls to her safe haven should give them some credibility. Although if that were all, she wouldn’t be as concerned as she was. She turned back to her book but her thoughts distracted her from any actual reading.I know I heard my name. What could they possibly be saying about me in particular? Do they think I couldn’t hear that? Should I say something? Monika was always better at these social issues. Yuri groaned softly in frustration. What do I do?“Oh, the book you’re reading looks interesting!”Yuri flinched slightly at the interjection and saw it was… Pipimi? The purple-haired girl looked back to the closet and saw Sayori laughing while Natsuki and the orange-haired girl looked embarrassed. How did she get over here without me noticing? Oh, I’ve been quiet for too long.“W-well, I’m just reading this new book I got,” Yuri meekly responded.“Oh really? What’s it called?” Pipimi said, eagerly awaiting her response. Yuri looked bashful as Pipimi smiled patiently.“It’s a psychological horror story called ‘Easily Disturbed.’ Truth be told, I haven’t been into horror too much, but the plot description truly grabbed my attention and I decided to give it a chance. So far, the main character has been so well written and I-“ Yuri abruptly stopped talking as she realized she was rambling. She looked away in embarrassment, ashamed she still hadn’t broken this habit yet.“Don’t worry, I don’t mind listening to what you have to say. It actually sounds really interesting!” Pipimi joyfully expressed with her body language. “In fact, if you’re just getting into psychological horror, I have quite a few suggestions I think you’d enjoy, like ‘The Hellbound Heart’ written by Clive Barker. It’s a short story, but it packs a punch with its gritty detail and how it combines psychological elements with the supernatural.”Yuri was astonished. She truly did not account for this at all. The warning signs in her head faded slowly as she listened intently to what Pipimi was saying. As she did, a thought came to her mind. This is Natsuki’s friend? I would’ve expected her to be more the vein of Sayori or Popuko, with them being 100 percent all the time. How does she deal with their shenanigans with such patience?Pipimi seemed to notice Yuri’s face deep in concentration. “Is there anything you’re curious about Yuri-san?” The purple girl kept her mouth shut. “It’s ok, I’m willing to listen.”Yuri paused to collect her thoughts. After a moment, she replied, “Why are you friends with Natsuki?”Pipimi hummed over the question. “Well, honestly a lot of things, but there’s one important thing that mattered to us the most,” she said as she turned back to the closet with a fond look on her face. “She gave us a chance when no one else would. People have never tried to understand us and sometimes it gets lonely. I love Popu-Chan with all my heart, but, and she won’t admit it, does know the feeling of being hated by people. To be misunderstood. We aren’t flawless angels but we aren’t monsters either.”For the first time since they met, Yuri saw an underlying sadness in Pipimi’s words and tone of voice. She didn’t know how to feel about it. Was this yet another potential trick?Pipimi then gave Yuri a serene grin. “And Natsuki was the one who was different. Because of her, we have a friend who we can talk to, make silly inside jokes, share our passions and so much more. Best of all, she introduced us to you girls.” Pipimi extended her hand. “I know me and my girlfriend haven’t given off the best impressions, but I truly would love to be your friend Yuri. You don’t have to if you don’t want to, but I would like to take the first step, just like Natsuki did for us.”For what seemed like the umpteenth time that day, Yuri was caught off guard. How did this happen? One of Natsuki’s friends wanted to befriend her? Why? Yuri looked at Pipimi who still had an expectant look on her face. I can’t make a decision like this so carelessly. I know nothing about these kinds of scenarios and I could mess this up. “M-may I have some time to think it over please?”Pipimi retracted her hand, her smile undeterred. “Of course Yuri, take as much time as you need.” Both of the girls heard an exaggerated “WHAT,” at the closet. Pipimi turned back to Yuri. “It was good talking to you. Au revoir!” She started heading back to the group of girls.Yuri knew what her course of action was next. I need to discuss this with Monika once the club has ended. She’ll know what to do. “Aw, Natsuki, that’s so adorable!” Sayori gushed as Natsuki wanted to crawl in a hole and die. That would be preferable than being where she was at this moment.“Ugh, please stooop,” Natsuki whined.Popuko chuckled. “But why? We’re just expressing our joy that our friend has found someone she likes.” Natsuki glared at Popuko which made her laugh harder.“Alright girls, that’s enough,” Pipimi interjected, seeming to come out of nowhere. “As much as we love teasing our favorite pink girl, we should address something important.” She looked towards Sayori. “Now that you know of Natsuki’s crush, what are you gonna do? Are you gonna sit and watch the show, or will you help us achieve Natsuki’s romantic goals?”Sayori dawned a look of realization on her face. She squealed and then tried to keep her composure. With the most serious face the coral-hair girl could muster, she replied, “Of course! Anything to make my friends happy! Team Natsuki/Yuri Love Squad is a-go!”“We’re not calling it that!” Natsuki pleaded.“Ok everyone, break time is over!” Monika announced. “Now let’s see what book Pipimi has in store for us.” The rest of the group got up from their spots, with new goals stirring in all their hearts. The club meeting went well all things considered. Pipimi talked about the book she had shown Yuri earlier, without any major spoilers. This also revealed Pipimi’s surprisingly impressive vocal talent as she read some of the lines in the story. Even so, Yuri couldn’t relax until she could find the opportunity to talk with Monika. After the club wrapped up and the girls went to pick up their things, Yuri went over to Monika.“Hey Monika, I need your advice,” Yuri sternly stated. The Club President seemed calm when it came to Yuri’s forwardness. “Does this have to do with your talk with Pipimi? I saw you talking with her after Sayori joined the other two.”Yuri nodded, forgetting the possibility that Monika saw their discussion. “Well yes. Something odd has transpired.”Monika seemed intrigued. “Oh? What is it?”Yuri straightened up. “I’m conflicted, Monika. Pipimi says she wants to be my friend, but I honestly don’t know what to make of it. I fear she might be trying to lower my guard in a long-term bid to take advantage of my trust. She appeared genuine as best I could discern, and she even seemed to enjoy the same type of literature I'm currently reading—but it's impossible for me to know if I'm missing some form of nonverbal warning indicator. I figured that you'd know better than I, so..."“Well, how about we look at the evidence we have so far.” Yuri nodded at Monika to continue. “So far, even though there’s been some slip-ups, I don’t think these girls are unkind people. They aren’t the hecklers we get and they’ve been taking our rules seriously. And, most importantly, does Natsuki seem uncomfortable with the girls around the club?”Yuri thought about it. "She didn't seem uncomfortable with her old 'friends', either... But then, I didn't see them. You did, though—how did Natsuki behave in their presence?"Monika replied, "Well, yeah. When I saw her in the hallway, her friends just kept berating her, and Natsuki was, like, super defensive about just being herself! So, does that sound like how Popuko and Pipimi are treating her?"Yuri countered, "I suppose not—but then, I don't think Natsuki would fall for the same trap twice. What if these two are being more subtle and underhanded in their mistreatment of her? They certainly seem to be having their fair share of private conversations with her, away from the rest of the club...""Well, she also knows now that she can talk to us about those things, if she ever needs to. After all, she wouldn't make the same mistake twice, right?"“But I heard my name mentioned Monika! Isn’t that cause for some concern?” Yuri argued.Monika hummed. “I could see why that would unsettle you. But I also heard Sayori’s name mentioned. And as far as I can tell, that cinnamon roll has joined their group.”Yuri didn’t know about that part. She just assumed Sayori was being her usual nice self. “Well, what does this mean, then?”The brunette gave her an encouraging look. “That Pipimi genuinely wants to be your friend. Maybe it’s because the girls want to befriend all of us or maybe she chose you specifically because you have the same interests as her, I don’t know. But, I think you should take her offer.” Yuri twirled her hair in thought. “I also think this could be a great opportunity for you to finally figure this out. The choice is yours, Yuri—no one has the right to be your friend if you don't want them to. And I’ll always be here to help if you need it.”Yuri considers Monika's words. "Come to think of it, it's also possible that she wants to be my friend as a sort of escape. After all, if she's as similar to me as she seems to let on, then perhaps Natsuki, Popuko, and Sayori are too energetic to keep up with, too... In which case, perhaps she wants to befriend me in order to have someone in which she can confide about her social conundrum?""Maybe!" Monika cheerily replied.Yuri absorbed all of what Monika said and felt both nervousness and relief. Clarity had entered her mind as she thought of all possibilities. Finally, she said, “I have made my decision.”
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
It was a sunny Saturday afternoon at the mall. The crowds were hectic as usual, the smell of erratic people lingering in the air and the face of sadness in your average mall worker made you feel sorry for them but thankful you aren’t in their position. Overall, the normal mall experience. Popuko and Pipimi were at the entrance, passing the time while waiting for their friend Natsuki to show up.“Ok so, you know what my idea is?” Popukpo inquired.“What’s up?”“So me and you are both guys and we’re handsome as hell.”A snort came from Pipimi. “Alright, heh, go on.”“My name would be Popuoka and your name would be Pipihara and we’d be the most badass dudes in school while also being in love but also manly as hell!” Popuko brought out her phone and swiped through her photos. “I even came up with some concept art, take a look.” Pipimi looked at the picture of the art, blushed, and laughed heartily. “I-it’s not that bad is it?!”Pipimi shook her head. “No no, my dear. I’m sorry, heh, I just love how my male counterpart has a long nose. You always find creative ways to make me laugh.” The red-bow girl looked affectionately at Popuko. “Have I told you how charming your art is Popu-Chan?”Popuko smirked. “You say it every chance you get.”“And I’ll keep doing it. I love your art style so much and I know that one day someone will pick up ‘Pop Team Epic’ and you’ll be mega-famous!”Popuko chuckled cutely. “You’re just saying that.” She paused. “You think Natsuki will like it?”Pipimi nodded. “Of course she will.” She smiled brightly, noticing Popuko’s excitement. “You’ve really grown to care for her, haven’t you?” Popuko looked away but muttered a sign of agreement. “I don’t blame you. She’s been the bestest friend we’ve ever had, even if she can be a biiiit catty, no pun intended.” A cat screech was heard in the background. “Huh, ain’t that a coin-ki-dink?”Popuko thought hard for a moment. “You know, ignoring the whole ‘get Natsuki and Yuri to passionately make out’ plan, do you really think we can be friends with the other club girls? I mean, Natsuki was such a freakin’ stroke of luck, can we repeat the magic twice?”Pipimi grinned. “Well, it’ll take a lot of work, but I know we can. After all, I am with the cutest partner in the world, so how could I possibly mess up?” The pig-tailed girl blushed a deep red in happiness and embarrassment. Pipimi adored how cute she always looked. “Popuko, I-”“Hey baby!”Popuko and Pipimi turned around to see a man they were unfamiliar with. The stranger was about their age, had a buzzcut, ripped jeans, lots of rings and piss-yellow sunglasses that made him look like a douchebag. Pipimi could already tell this man would be a nuisance but didn’t want to ruin such a pleasant day. After all, it was only 12:10 in the afternoon.Pipimi cleared her throat, giving her best neutral face. “Hello sir, can I help you with something?”The man tried to bite his lips seductively, which just added to the icky chills going down Pipimi’s back. “You can, by giving me your number, babe.”Immediately going to the defensive, Popuko went in front of Pipimi and snarled. “”Back off, you stinky shithead! She’s already taken!”Pipimi really didn’t want this to escalate, especially since she started feeling the ringing from her phone in her back pocket. “Popuko, let’s just-”The stranger frowned and shot back, “I wasn’t talking to you, fatass. I was talking to the lady. After all, such a pretty girl can speak for herself, right babe?” He regained his shit-eating grin once Popuko seemed shaken by what he said, looking more crimson than before.Popuko was about to tear into him when Pipimi put her arm in front of her. She internally took a breath, looked the man in the eyes, and coldly asked, “What makes you think absolute trash like you have ANY right to judge my gorgeous girlfriend like that?” The man’s confident smile vanished as Pipimi continued with her verbal onslaught. “Your eyes are too far apart, your nose is crooked, your posture is horribly shit, you have food stains on your shirt, your teeth look unsanitary, your glasses make you look like a jackass, and worst of all, your personality, or lack thereof, is as charming as rotting gunk on a sidewalk.” The dark-blue haired girl walked slowly towards the man whose confidence had been crushed as he began shaking in rage. “So, if you’re done with your pathetic attempts at being a failed pick-up artist, I suggest you beat it, or I’ll break your fingers. Do you understand?”Completely emasculated, the man grit his teeth, turned around, mumbled “...bitch…” under his breath and walked away. Pipimi turned to Popuko, who looked significantly less happier than earlier. Ignoring the ringing from her phone, she went to her girlfriend and squeezed her into a hug.“You know I love you more than anything in existence, right?”“Yeah…” Popuko said.“And you know that guy was full of shit right?”“Yeah.”“If you know this, then I’m gonna let go and I’m gonna kiss you because you are absolutely heavenly and the center of my universe.”Popuko finally smiled. “I’d like that.” The two broke the hug and leaned in for a soft kiss. “Love you Pipi-Bae.”“Love you too, Popu-Chan.”“Hey girls!” Popuko and Pipimi turned to see a familiar friendly face walking towards them. With a phone camera aimed at them. Natsuki smiled mischievously. “You guys are so cute!”Popuko groaned. “You’re never gonna let us live this down, are you?”“Nope!”“Fuuuuuck.”Pipimi began laughing, ready to spend another chaotic day with her two favorite people. “Ah. I wonder where that cat came from?”
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
“I have made my decision.”
“Oh? So is Pipimi your friend now?”
“No. She has been promoted from stranger to acquaintance.”
The weekend passed and a new school week began. While Natsuki walked towards the club with a usually smiling Pipimi, something unusual was the almost irritated mood surrounding Popuko. “What’s wrong with her?” Natsuki asked.Pipimi hummed. “Oh her? Well, funny story, are you aware there’s an actual anime club in this school?”Natsuki’s nose wrinkled as the memory of Monika talking about it came back to her. “Ugh, yeah. What about it?”“Well, we walked by to see what it was like and I guess Popuko didn’t like the “lustrous” looks those fellows gave me,” Pipimi chuckled. “I don’t know why she’s worried.”“You know why I’m worried!” Popuko replied angrily. “We already had to deal with the creepy-stalker shtick at our old school, I’d rather not repeat the same beat-down! It always felt like hitting sweaty toothpicks with glasses.” The orange-haired girl grimaced.“You guys sure get into weird situations often, huh?” Natsuki inquired, sharing Popuko’s face imaging the description.Pipimi shrugged. “I dunno. My life had always been so boring until I met Popuko. Because of her, now I seem to never have a dull moment. Sometimes it's good, other times it always attracts absolute weirdos.”“Eh, makes sense.” Only then did Natsuki realize they were looking at her with mischievous looks. “Oh, shut up!”“You know we love you,” Popuko replied teasingly. Natsuki rolled her eyes as the trio entered the club with the usual greetings. Yuri glanced up from her book at Natsuki and gave her a polite smile. She gave one back and Yuri returned to her story.Turning to the girls, the pinkette said, “Hey girls, give me a moment. I’m gonna go talk to Yuri real quick.” The duo gave her a thumbs-up and she gingerly walked over to the bookworm’s desk. “Hey Yuri, can I talk to you for a sec?”Yuri looked up from the novel surprised for a moment before responding, “Oh, what is it Natsuki?”“I just wanna apologize for neglecting you as much as I have been lately. I’ve been hanging out with the gals so often lately that we haven’t had any time to talk.” Natsuki chuckled sardonically. “Can’t even keep my promise I made to my friend, huh?”Yuri shook her head. “No no, I understand how busy you’ve been lately with your…” she glanced over to see Pipimi petting Popuko’s head, who then made a high-pitched noise of joy. “…Eccentric friends.”“Yeah, Pipimi can’t go a day without showing off how much she looooves her girlfriend.”“Girlfriend?”“Yep. I genuinely think if they were to separate from each other for more than 30 minutes, the universe would implode with how often they’re together.” She made an explosion sound to emphasize her very important point.“I wonder…” Yuri mumbled with an intrigued expression. Not noticing Yuri’s look of concentration, Natsuki continued. “Anyways, if you’re free this Saturday, I’d like to hang out at the bookstore. I’ve been meaning to get this new manga that just came out and I was wondering if you’d like to join me?”Yuri smiled once she realized what Natsuki was saying. “Sure, that sounds delightful.”Natsuki gave Yuri an equally bright smile. “Great! I’ll text you the deets later.” She nodded her head to Yuri and headed back to her friends. Pipimi raised her eyebrow.“So, judging from your goofy blushing face, it went well?”Stopping herself from saying something potentially embarrassing, the shorter girl gave Pipimi an excited nod. The blue-haired gal lightly slapped Natsuki’s back in congratulations. For the first time since the whole ‘Natsuki’s new friends’ situation began, Yuri actually had something nice to look forward to. Spending time with Natsuki in a bookstore was something she knew she could handle and also gave her the benefit to find a new series to get into. She also became appreciative that she didn’t invite Popuko or Pipimi. The idea of handling all three of them stressed her out. Not for a long while at least.“Hello Yuri!” Speak of the devil, Pipimi has once again approached Yuri with the usual kind smile accompanying her. “So, have you thought about my proposition?”This time, after having a weekend to prepare, Yuri knew what to say. “I’m sorry if this doesn’t completely satisfy your offer, but may we just be acquaintances for now? Just until we get to know each other more thoroughly.” Yuri waited to see how Pipimi would respond with bated breath.“Hmm. Okay, fair enough. Take as much time as you need!” Pipimi sat down in a seat next to her. “May an acquaintance such as myself still talk about a new book I just found recently?”Relieved, Yuri gave the blue-haired girl a nod. She then went on to listen intently to Pipimi’s discussion about a story about a group of final girls and how it tackles the clichès usually found in the horror genre. Then a realization came to her. If what Natsuki told her earlier was fact, then Pipimi is romantically involved with Popuko. Which explains her seemingly inhuman patience, even with her issues. Is this how Pipimi became friends with Natsuki?“Hey Yuri, can I ask you something?”Snapped out of her daze, Yuri replied, “Sure.”This was the moment Yuri saw Pipimi dawn her iconic smug expression. “Is what Natsuki tells me true? About how much you seem to enjoy thoroughly partaking in eating her cupcakes?”Yuri felt a blush creeping in as she looked away mortified. “W-well, perhaps. Just a little…”Pipimi’s face suddenly fell. “You ok, Yuri?”The purple-haired girl had no idea how this girl could read her so easily. She couldn’t look Pipimi in the eyes. “Mm…”“It’s ok Yuri. I won’t pry if it makes you uncomfortable.” Yuri paused her thoughts momentarily and looked up to see Pipimi eye to eye. “I’m sorry, my only friends so far have been Popuko and Natsuki, so my teasing may not exactly be for everyone.”Continuing to surprise her, Yuri shakily bowed her head and said, “It’s okay, I’m fine.”For a second, Pipimi seemed doubtful but then returned with her bright smile. “Fair enough, ain’t my business.” Clapping her hands together, she continued with, “I believe my turn is up. What about you, what are your favorite stories?” Even though this acquaintanceship was off to a rocky start, Yuri at least appreciated how she respected her boundaries. She would think more about what happened later. For now, she played along and began talking about her book. “Ok Natsuki, you got some explaining to do.”If she were being truthful, Natsuki would tell you she had never felt scared or intimidated by Pipimi. Until now. It wasn’t even that she was angry or anything like that. The fact was Pipimi had no grin to see and her expression was entirely serious. “Woah woah, what’s going on?”Pipimi took a deep breath to compose herself. “Ok so. Natsuki, do you mess with Yuri often?”“What?”“Do you, or do you not, mess with Yuri often?”Natsuki had never felt this tone with Pipimi before. Gone was the lighthearted cheery mood, replaced with the same atmosphere of being interrogated by a stranger. “W-well I mean yeah, but it’s just teasing! I’m not bullying her or anything.”“Mm. I see.” Natsuki looked to Popuko for some explanation of this sudden switch.“Trust me, just let her get this out of her system. She tends to get this way sometimes when she’s trying to figure something out,” Popuko explained.Pipimi exhaled deeply. “Natsuki, have you thought about how Yuri feels with your teasing?”“Well, as far as I know she’s been fine with it. She never really said anything about it at least.”Pipimi pinched the bridge of her nose. “Natsuki, you’re the one who knows Yuri much more than the two of us. How have you not noticed how shitty she must feel when you say it? It may have not been intentional, but you may have been bullying her by accident.”Natsuki looked away in silence for a moment. “I don’t know, do you really think so?”Pipimi sighed and finally gave a softer tone. “It’s just something to think about. I know you’d never intentionally hurt Yuri and I’m just trying to help.” She put her hand on the pinkette’s shoulder. “I’m sorry for being hard on you, I just needed to know all the details.”“It’s ok, and I’ll try to keep what you said in mind,” Natsuki reassured her. The vibes became lighter as Pipimi gave Natsuki a side hug, which was a new one from her.“Awe you gals are totes adorbs!” The trio turned to Sayori who joined in the conversation. “So what are y’all talking about? Making Team Natsuki/Yuri Love Squad plans?”“I thought we agreed that was a bad name,” Natsuki deadpanned.Sayori giggled. “Awe, you’ll grow to love it. So, I believe that talking in the clubroom gives too much risk for Yuri or Moni to overhear us. So what I’m suggesting is tomorrow after school, we use my room as a meeting space.”“You sure your room is big enough to fit all four of us?” Popuko interjected.“Oh totally!” Sayori assured her. “And it’ll be fun to come up with ideas to get Natsuki and Yuri smooching~,” Sayori wiggled her eyebrows in an exaggerated manner.Nodding in agreement, Natsuki replied, “Yeah, I guess I’m down if you girls are.”“Then it’s settled!” Pipimi announced. “Team Natsuki/Yuri Love Squad is a go!”Natsuki smacked her forehead with her hand. “Oh for fucks sake…”“HAH!” Popuko cackled.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Yuri laid in bed anxious about the day that transpired. Trying to sleep it off was an impossible task the more she thought about it. After tossing and turning for what seemed like the hundredth time, she finally got out her phone and scrolled to Monika’s number.Me: Hello Monika, I’m sorry this message was delivered so late. Can we meet up to talk tomorrow? It’s important. After rewriting and rereading the message many times, Yuri was satisfied and closed her eyes to go back to sleep. Monika woke up feeling especially groggy this morning. Rubbing her eyes, she checked her phone to see what the time was. Instead, she received a surprise text from Yuri. The time she sent it was ungodly, even by Monika’s standards, which wasn’t a good sign. Seeing her text, she responds:Me: sure thing yuri. are you doing ok??Satisfied, she got up from her bed to get ready for the day. One minute later, the brunette hears a ping from her phone.Yuri: I just need to speak with you. Can we meet around lunchtime? I’d like to find a secluded spot from there.Me: sounds good! I’ll see you then :) While her classmates were chatting about a new person they met, Monika looked towards the classroom door waiting for Yuri to show up. After a few minutes, she saw the familiar face slightly peeping her head into the door waiting for her to finish. Saying her goodbyes, Monika goes to the door and meets with Yuri.“Sorry, but can we go to an empty classroom to have this conversation?” Yuri asked while twirling her hair.“Of course.”After a minute of walking, they found one. Monika opens the door and gestures for Yuri to enter. Once they’re both inside and the door is closed, Monika starts their conversation."So, what's on your mind?""A lot..."Monika raised her eyebrow. "...Can you start from the beginning?""I suppose.” Yuri lets out a deep breath. “So, I told Pipimi that I'd made up my mind—that I'd consider her an acquaintance...""How'd she take it?""Well enough, and it rather quickly led into a discussion about a book series she'd read recently," she said with a small smile."Oh, Yuri, that's wonderful!" Monika clapped excitedly.Whatever hint of a smile was there disappeared as Yuri continued. "It was pleasant, although... I can't shake the feeling that she might only be pandering to me—trying to make me lower my defenses...""Hmm... Would she really be that manipulative?""I'm less convinced of that now than I was previously. Regardless, even if she is genuine, that's not my only concern right now...""Oh?""Do you recall Natsuki's tendency to tease me about her cupcakes?" Yuri said after a pause.Monika shook her head in disapproval. "Yeah... She doesn't seem to want to move on from that, huh?""Quite. The problem is, the topic came up while talking to Pipimi, and I think she could tell from my mannerisms that I didn't enjoy it.""So, do you think she'll talk to Natsuki about that?" asked Monika."The way I see it, there are three possible scenarios: The first is, she speaks to Natsuki about it, and Natsuki becomes less comfortable speaking to me—I mean, she's used to teasing her friends, so—"Monika decided to cut her off to not get fully off-track. "Yeah, I understand. What're the other two?""Right. The second scenario is that she tells Natsuki that information, but in a way that frames my intentions as dishonest and hurtful, which leads to miscommunication and..." Yuri shakes her head. "It's certainly a more dastardly scenario than the first, but as I said before, I still don't know her intentions."At this, Monika thought carefully. Ok maybe I’ve been taking this situation a bit too lax. Yuri does have a tendency to assume the worst but then again, I haven’t gotten to know Pipimi as much as Natsuki has. Maybe I’ll talk with her later today. Noticing Yuri’s staring, Monika straightens herself up and asks, “And what’s the third option?”“The third scenario is that she doesn’t tell Natsuki, but instead uses this information as a sort of blackmail over me, threatening to tell Natsuki if I don’t oblige her requests…” Yuri shivered.“Would you really let her do that?!” Monika asked in shock.“I would like to think not, but it’s hard for me to say unless I’m actually in such a scenario,” Yuri answered meekly.Ok that settles it, I’ve got to speak with Pipimi today. For Yuri’s sake, Monika resolved. The Club President spent the rest of the period reassuring Yuri and silently coming up with a plan to talk to the red-bowed girl. As Club President, dealing with three club members has been a manageable task so far. Dealing with five however has been a whole different beast. Even though they are not the delinquents Yuri assumed they’d be, Popuko and Pipimi were definitely chaotic individuals. For instance, today was Popuko’s turn to show a book she liked and discuss the details of the story with the rest of the club. This resulted in Popuko bringing a book that was definitely a rip-off of an already existing franchise but with badly rendered photos and a mention of something called “super-AIDS.” Monika shut it down immediately after Pipimi and Natsuki started cackling hysterically and asked the orange-haired gal to bring a more appropriate story tomorrow.Exhausted, Monika announced the end of the club meeting and went to her desk. “Wasn’t this supposed to be less crazy than the debate club?” she thought aloud.“My apologies, me and Popuko seem to bring a bit of insanity wherever we go,” Pipimi said, somehow appearing next to Monika in a chair.“Oh, Pipimi!” Monika said with some surprise in her voice. I almost forgot. Just the person I wanted to see. “Don’t mind me, I just needed to vent some frustration, you know?”“I get it,” Pipimi responded with a head nod. “Going from a relatively smaller club to this must be somewhat stress-inducing right?”“You said it.” Monika waited for a retort but instead saw Pipimi with a critical thinking face. For a moment, she wanted to raise her concerns but stopped once the blue-haired girl suddenly chippered up.“I wanted to ask you something if that’s ok?”“Oh, sure. Is there anything wrong, Pipimi?” replied Monika, who was taken aback for a moment.Putting her hands below the chin, Pipimi asked, “You seem to talk to Yuri a lot. Would you say she’s one of your closest friends?”Yuri’s warnings replayed in Monika’s head. While she isn’t convinced anything is wrong, she decides to play it safe just to be sure. “Yuri’s one of my really good friends. Why do you ask?"“Well,” Pipimi started with her smile growing wider. “ I was wondering if you can help me with something very important. It concerns two of your club members.”What game is she playing? And what about my friends? I really hope this isn’t, like, anything too serious. “What’s going on with my club members?”For the first time, Pipimi had an unsure look as she went silent for a moment. She took a deep breath and said, “Can you keep a secret, Club President?”A nervous chill went down Monika’s spine. “It depends. What is it?”Pipimi leaned in, cupping her hands as Monika stared in anticipation. “One of the main reasons Popuko and I joined this club is because Natsuki has a major crush on Yuri and wants to confess her feelings to her.”Another pause.“I’m sorry, could you repeat that?”Regaining a smirk, Pipimi repeated, “Natsuki is deeply in love with Yuri and we want to help her confess because she’s our best friend.”Monika fights to hold back a smile as her cheek turns crimson red. “You mean, like, for real?”“Yes, for real… Are you feeling alright?”“Yep! I just think it’s cute, that’s all.” She’s grinning now.“… I’m gonna take a guess that you like romance novels huh?” Pipimi inquired.Monika purses her lips. “I dabble in them. But enough about me! Please continue.”Smiling herself, Pipimi continued with, “Yes, Natsuki has fallen hard for our favorite bookworm but the issue is that we aren’t as close to her as you are. I was wondering if you could help us see how she feels about Natsuki. I believe that your assistance will really benefit the mission.”“Ahaha, I mean, I would love to help you, but, like, I don’t know how Yuri feels. To be honest, I don’t know if she even thinks about romance. I’m kind of afraid that Yuri might stress out if she gets a confession and accidentally leaves Natsuki heartbroken.”Pipimi exhaled through her nose in defeat. “Well, that’s understandable. I believe I speak for both of us when I say we both don’t want Natsuki to be hurt by this.” She then looks towards Monika in almost a pleading look, clenching her fingers into her skirt. “But it would be even worse if Natsuki never tries, lets her hesitation win, and live a life full of that nagging thought of, ‘what if?’ It’s even worse with the knowledge that I could’ve done something about it. I would hate myself if I never even helped her gather the courage to at least try. So I ask again, will you please help my best friend confess to her crush?”Monika paused, a flutter in her heart, absorbing all Pipimi told her. “You’re serious about all of this, aren’t you Pipimi?” She didn’t just mean getting Natsuki together with Yuri. Monika finally saw without hesitation that, at least Pipimi, was a fully devoted friend to Natsuki and just wanted to see her be happy.Monika gave her best smile and put her hand on Pipimi’s shoulder. “I can’t make any promises, but I’ll talk to Yuri and then I’ll get back to you with whatever I can gather.”Pipimi’s face beamed. “Thank you so much miss Club President.”“Please, call me Monika.”
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
So, unfortunately I could not finish this story. But not because I have given up on it or because I’ve grown to resent writing it, I just genuinely cannot write Natsuri. I’m sorry to all the Natsuri fans out there, I just couldn’t do it. However this story is not over and there will still be gay fluffy stuff happening with more chaotic nonsense very soon, it will just take a while to do the necessary rewrites. I am once again sorry and hope you’ll look forward to the finalized “Natsuki’s Epic Friends.” Love, Gabe
