It was dark tonight. Darker than he can ever remember it being, especially this close the vortexes. He could see the lightning flashing in the distance, but getting closer and closer with each flash. He had done everything he could to ensure the safety of Uzushio and her citizens, but he knew it wouldn't be enough. He had discovered the betrayal too late and now all he could do was give the seal controlling the vortexes all his remaining chakra to delay the inevitable and give as many people as possible enough time to escape the island. The island was surrounded by shinobi from Kiri, Kumo and Iwa and he knew that if anyone was coming from Konoha, they would be too late to help. He cursed Danzo and his scheming as he poured his chakra into the seal. The vortexes howled and surged as the extra power fueled them and he knew that any shinobi or ship that was close would be destroyed, but once the Raikage, Tsuchikage and Mizukage arrived with their strongest shinobi and jinchûriki they would be able to eventually smash through the barriers, although they will never completely destroy them, enough to gain entry to Uzushio. It would cost them greatly though, there was no way the three nations attacking would not limp home after this.Although he was furious at Danzo’s deception he knew the Hokage had no idea what had occurred. He hoped at least Konoha would help the refugees and take advantage of the deficit in the defences of Kiri, Kumo and Iwa for decades to come. He had made sure that all the scrolls and artefacts that were sacred to Uzushio and the Uzumaki Clan were hidden deep within the city. They would survive the destruction of Uzushio but nobody except an extremely strong, resilient and resourceful Uzumaki descendant would be able to find them. He had told no one where he had hidden them so the information would die with him and would not be able to be tortured out of anyone. The last Uzukage of Uzushio stood his ground as the invading armies breached the defences, they didn't get through the breaches unscathed, it cost them hundreds of shinobi. He was almost completely drained of his chakra, but he had one small surprise left the invaders. As the three Kage advanced on his position, he started to rapidly form seals to release his final weapon, Tensei Ryūfū Arashi (Eternal Oath Windstorm Maelstrom). The jutsu would create tornadoes of sharp wind blades that would slice through everything around him while using the water to trap them here. He had manipulated the jutsu so that it would completely destroy his body so that the invaders would not be able to gain any secrets from him. He also made sure that any Uzumaki left on the island would also be obliterated for same reason. All the civilians had already been evacuated, so only his most stubborn shinobi were left. They all knew what was going to happen and were ready. He could only hope that the three Kage got caught in it as well.He stood motionless for a moment, feeling the raw fury of nature and chakra merge around him as he activated the jutsu. Although he had given everything he had to protect Uzushio and her people, the reality of what was happening weighed heavily on him. The wind screamed as his jutsu took shape, whipping the sea into a furious storm, creating towering walls of water around the island. The sound of the vortexes intensified, and he could sense the desperation and fear in the invading forces below. The three Kage stood on the battlefield aware that they were facing something far beyond their expectations or experiences. Breaking through the barrier had already cost them dearly, and now the Uzukage was going to take as many of them as he could with him.The storm intensified, tornadoes of sharp blades of wind swirling faster than the eye could track. He felt his body beginning to unravel under the strain, the sacrifice he had long accepted drawing near. He closed his eyes and thought of Uzushio, not the war torn ruin it would soon become, but the vibrant home it had once been, its people, its laughter, it's beauty, the legacy of the Uzumaki Clan.As the jutsu reached its peak, he could feel the chakra pulsing through the very air, the tendrils spreading through the battlefield, locking the enemies in place with the walls of water that surged up from the ocean. The blades of wind cut through everything in their path, shinobi screamed in terror and pain, even the most powerful of the Kages' forces were torn apart. His vision blurred, but he could feel the connection to Uzushio strengthening. It wasn’t just a city to him, it was a living, breathing entity, one that had always been with him, that had nurtured and guided his people for centuries. Now he could feel Uzushio welcoming him and his remaining Clansmen, into the depths of her soul, cradling them in her embrace as their life force drained away. With his last breath, he whispered a final prayer, not for himself, but for the future Uzumaki, hoping that one day they would find their way back to Uzushio, back to their roots. The storm raged as he vanished into the maelstrom, the tornados of wind and water claiming everything in sight, and soon, nothing remained but the echoes of destruction. As the jutsu finally dissipated, the survivors would never forget the sight of Uzushio’s final stand, nor would they recover from the losses they had suffered. The ruins of Uzushio, now shrouded in eerie silence, became a haunting monument to a great power that once thrived and the inevitable consequences of fear driven destruction. The whirlpools continued their eternal dance, guarding the secrets and legacy of the Uzumaki Clan until the time was right for them to be uncovered again.**************Naruto was watching the sunset from his favourite spot. He sat on his father’s stone head, gazing out at Konoha bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun. The village looked almost fantastical at this time of day, as if the light was hiding all of its shortcomings, making the rooftops shimmer and the streets seem serene. From up on Hokage Rock, everything appeared calm, perfect. Naruto knew better, just like he knew that, deep inside, the same quiet unease tugged at the edges of his thoughts and had settled in his heart. He came up here often, especially when the questions in his mind grew too loud to ignore, when he wanted to think and not be disturbed. Lately he had been thinking about Uzushio. For the first seventeen years of his life, he was kept in the dark about his Uzumaki heritage and his Clan's homeland. It wasn't until he had almost died during the 4th Shinobi War that he even learned who his parents were and that he carried his mother's name, instead of his father's.Since the war had ended and he watched his friends find their place in the new world he had started to question his place. For the longest time, Naruto had believed that becoming Hokage was his path, the only one that would bring him a sense of purpose and acknowledgement. He had fought hard for it, bled for it. He wasn’t so sure anymore.Watching Shikamaru and Ino take on their fathers mantles, after they had both died in the war, and Choji preparing for his own future as head of his Clan all made sense. They had always known where they belonged, what they were meant to do. Sakura, with her growing responsibilities at the hospital, had also found her place.Kakashi had started hinting that it wouldn’t be long before he began seriously training Naruto for the Hokage role. Whenever Naruto thought about it now though, it didn’t feel like the same. The idea of sitting behind a desk, making decisions, governing Konoha, dealing with the Elders, the same Elders that had caused Sasuke so much pain, it just didn't feel right anymore. Not when he had discovered something deeper within himself, something tied to his mother’s name, to the ruins of Uzushio. He wasn't even sure if he wanted to stay here in Konoha. Sure he loved his friends and he was now treated a lot better by the villagers than he had been when he was younger, but now that he and Sasuke had realised how they felt for each other, Naruto wanted to be with Sasuke and Sasuke still felt uncomfortable in Konoha, after everything that had happened.Naruto wanted to go to Uzushio to see if he could find anything that might help him find his place in this new world, whether it was just a sense of belonging or closure, or something more tangible didn't matter. He knew it was in ruins, but that didn't mean that he wouldn't be able to find something there. The more he thought about it, the more he felt this was something he needed to do. After about an hour, Sasuke joined him. He sat gracefully beside him and looked out over the darkened village, the silence between them comfortable, yet heavy with unspoken thoughts. Sasuke had always been good at reading Naruto, understanding the turmoil and pain that lay beneath his usual sunny smile.“What’s going on, Naruto? You’ve been up here for a while. Something’s bothering you.” Sasuke’s voice was soft, but direct.Naruto scratched the back of his neck sheepishly. “Heh, nothing’s wrong exactly… I’ve just been thinking about my place in all this. Where do I fit in this new world?” He turned back to look over the village.Sasuke glanced at him, studying Naruto’s profile before looking back at the village below. “What do you mean? You always wanted to be Hokage. Is that not something you still want?”Naruto hesitated, and Sasuke noticed the rare uncertainty in his expression. “I don’t know, Sasuke. I mean, I used to think it was the only thing that mattered to me, the only way to get the village to acknowledge me. I don't know, lately.… things have changed. I’ve been thinking about Uzushio more and more. I feel like I need to go there, to see what’s left of it, to understand where I come from. I guess… I’m trying to figure out if there’s something else I’m meant to do. I know you’re still uncomfortable here in Konoha, that you haven't forgiven Konoha for anything. I don’t know if I want to stay here if you don’t want to be here either, ya know.”Sasuke was quiet for a long moment, considering Naruto’s words. He had never been one to talk about feelings, but he understood what Naruto felt. The same way he felt after the war, which had drawn him away from Konoha, in search of his own answers.“You should go,” Sasuke said finally, his voice calm and steady. “Uzushio is a part of your past, your heritage. You won’t know your place in this world until you understand that part of yourself. I know what it’s like to search for answers about your family. You need to do this.”Naruto looked at Sasuke, surprised by the depth of understanding in his words. “Would you come with me?”Sasuke smirked slightly, a rare softness in his expression. “You think I’d let you wander off alone to some ruin and get yourself into trouble? Of course I’ll come, dobe. I want to be with you. Wherever that may be.” He reached over and gently clasped Naruto's hand in his and kissed the back of it. Naruto blushed, but looked pleased at the attention. They sat there for another hour before they made their way down Hokage Rock to go home and prepare for their journey.****************Naruto and Sasuke had been travelling for several weeks. They were taking their time, travelling at a civilian pace. Each night they stopped at a village, if there was one close by, and if the village required help they would stay and help out with whatever the village required. Naruto found it refreshing to be treated as a normal person instead of the vessel of the Nine Tailed Fox. Naruto and Sasuke were recognised as the heroes of the war, but not for being a jinchûriki or the last Uchiha. The villages they helped were always grateful and would offer their most precious possessions in payment, which Naruto and Sasuke always refused to accept, stating that they did not need or want payment, they just enjoyed helping.Naruto could tell they were getting close to Uzushio, as he could smell the ocean. He was getting nervous and excited about what they might find when they finally got to Uzushio. Sasuke watched Naruto's nervousness increase the closer they got the coast. He stopped walking and placed his hand on Naruto's forearm to stop him.“Dobe. Do you want to stop? Do you need some time to prepare yourself before we arrive at the coast?”“Huh? I….uh….do you think that would be a good idea?” Naruto said scratching the back of his neck.“Probably. I have noticed that you're getting more and more anxious the closer we get, so I thought maybe you might what to take a break to unpack how you're feeling at the moment. It's not like we're in a rush. Uzushio will still be there no matter when we get there. She's not going anywhere.”“She?”“Yeah. I don't know where that comes from, but it just feels right, don't you think?”“It's still amazes me how much in sync we are with each other. I've always thought of Uzushio as a she as well. Yeah I think that stopping for a while might be good.”“Okay. Look there's a stream just over to the right of the path, why don't we set up camp near there for the night?”“Sure, sounds good.”They walked over to the stream and found a good spot to set up camp. Once their camp was set up they sat by the stream with their feet dangling in the water. Naruto kicked his feet lightly in the water, watching the ripples he created move across the surface of the stream. Sasuke sat next to Naruto and watched him. After a little while Naruto sighed and looked over at Sasuke. “I don't really know why I’m so anxious, ya know. I'm just feeling a bit jittery and the butterflies are rampaging around my stomach.”“It's okay, Naruto. That's pretty normal. Of course you're nervous. Uzushio would have probably been your home, if it hadn't been destroyed when your mother was a child, and if it wasn't your home you would have at least visited it fairly regularly I would imagine. I can imagine that you are probably a bit conflicted about how to feel right now.”“Yeah, you're right. I'm angry, sad and apprehensive all at once. To be honest I’ve been angry ever since I found out that not only was my mother the Uzumaki and I carry her name, not dad's, but that Konoha had all this information about my Clan and Uzushio that I could have known and not once was I told anything. After reading some of the information about Uzushio I became even angrier, not only did Uzushio get destroyed but it was all because of fear of their power. I now understand so much more about what you were feeling after your Clan was wiped out. How are we supposed to process that?” Naruto dug his fingers into the soft dirt under his hands in frustration. Sasuke turned to face Naruto and took the hand closest to him and held it gently. “I honestly don't know. I still haven't really processed what happened to the Uchiha. I've come to terms with what happened, but I still haven't fully figured out what I feel about it. It's difficult to understand how the complete annihilation of a community can be justified. I'm not sure that we need to understand why, that won't change anything. Maybe it's more about realising what drives people to do this and try to stop it from happening again.”Sasuke leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss on Naruto's cheek. The apples of Naruto's cheeks tinted pink and he smiled softly. “Thanks Sasuke, I’m so glad you came with me. I feel like I can face anything with you by my side.” He leaned his head on Sasuke's shoulder. They sat on the bank of the stream until it grew dark, just enjoying each other's company. After they had dinner, they sat by their campfire and talked. “How are you feeling, Naruto? Tell me what's going on in your head.”“I'm not sure if I can. I get the feeling that something life changing is about to happen. I'm not sure if it's going to be a good thing or a bad thing. I don't even know how we're going to get into Uzushio. What if we can't even enter the city? What then?”“I have a feeling that if anyone can enter Uzushio, it's you. You're an Uzumaki, she will let you in, I'm certain. Besides that you're Naruto, the most unpredictable ninja in the elemental nations, you’ll find a way.”Naruto looked over at Sasuke to see if he was making fun of him, but all he saw was complete sincerity. Naruto leaned his head on Sasuke's shoulder and sighed, “Thanks Sasuke, it's good to be reminded that you're here with me and believe in me.”Sasuke smiled and kissed the top of Naruto's head. “Anytime dobe. Are you ready for bed, or do you want to talk some more, or just sit here and enjoy the night?”“Mmm, I think I might be ready to go to bed.”The next morning they packed up their camp once they finished breakfast and continued their journey to Uzushio. It took them the remainder of the day to get to the coast. Once they arrived at the coast they scouted for a suitable place to set up camp. After they had eaten dinner they walked to the water’s edge and looked across the ocean to the faintly visible ruins of Uzushio, bathed in the dying light of day. Even in ruins, Uzushio was beautiful. They could just see the first of the whirlpools that Uzushio was famous for.“Hmm, I forgot that Uzushio was surrounded by whirlpools. How do you think we might get around them?” Naruto pondered.“Not sure, but that is a problem for tomorrow, I for one certainly do not relish the idea of trying to gain entry in the dark.” Sasuke replied.“Heh, yea, me neither. I know I'm considered unpredictable, but I think I would be pushing my luck a bit too much if I tried to navigate those whirlpools at night.”“Have you asked Kurama if there is a trick to navigating the whirlpools. I mean your mum was his jinchûriki before you and Mito Uzumaki was his first jinchûriki and she was from Uzushio as well.”“Heh, no I didn't think of that. I so glad you're here with me, otherwise I’d be floundering with no clue what to do, ya know.” Naruto scratched the back of his neck in embarrassment.“Don't do that, Naruto.”“Huh, do what?”“Put yourself down, call yourself stupid. You're not stupid, you know that, right?”“But I am stupid, you call me stupid all the time.”Sasuke recoiled like he’d been hit, his eyes wide. “I’m so sorry Naruto, I thought you knew that I was not being serious. I don't….honestly I don't think you are stupid. Sure you can do some pretty stupid things at times, but so can everyone. Let's be honest, I’ve probably done more stupid things than you have.” Sasuke said quietly.“Like what, Sasuke? What have you done that's stupid?”“You're kidding, right? Let's see, I tried to kill you multiple times, I let Orochimaru manipulate me and then I let Obito manipulate me.”“None of that was your fault, Sasuke. Nearly all of that stems from what the Elders did to your Clan. I know I’ve said this before, but you and I could have easily swapped places. I don't know how you could compare that to the stupid shit I’ve done.”Sasuke sighed and moved closer to Naruto, took his hands and looked him in the eyes, “Naruto, you are not stupid. No matter what people say, please believe me when I say this. Sure sometimes you do things that are a little unwise, but nine times out of ten it works out for you. You are smarter than you give yourself credit for. Sure you’re not the strategist that Shikamaru is, but honestly, who is. You still can come up with great strategies, you just tend to think on the go. I will be forever sorry that I ever gave you the impression that I truly thought you were stupid. I thought you realised that when I called you dobe that it was a term of endearment, not an insult. Can you ever forgive me.”“Sasuke, there's nothing to forgive, but thank you. No one has ever bothered to apologise for the way they have spoken to me or treated me in the past. I'm sorry Sasuke, I don't mean to appear like I’m accusing you of something, its just….wh..when.. I get like that when I'm nervous.” Naruto looked at his feet, ashamed.Sasuke leaned forward, put his hand under Naruto's chin and lifted his head so he could look at him. “Please don't apologise for things that don't need apologies. I was in the wrong, and I'm sorry.” Sasuke kissed Naruto softly on the lips. Naruto wrapped his arms around Sasuke's neck and deepened the kiss. They rested their foreheads together and breathed. “How about we retire for the night and tomorrow we can work out how to get to Uzushio.” Sasuke said. Naruto nodded his head and they walked back to where they had set up camp. The morning was clear and warm. The breeze coming off the ocean was gentle and the spray was refreshing. Naruto and Sasuke sat facing each other in front of their tent. Sasuke had his sharingan activated and was looking into Naruto's eyes. Suddenly they were both inside Naruto's head facing Kurama. “I'll tell you what I know about the whirlpools that protect Uzushio, but I don't know how to deactivate them or even if they can be as neither of my previous jinchûriki were the Uzukage or Elders of the Clan so they had no knowledge of it. I remember Mito having to navigate the whirlpools a couple of times during her time as my jinchûriki, but I don't know if the destruction of Uzushio has changed anything about their size, strength or reach. What I remember of the entry into Uzushio was that there was a particular path that needed to be taken, because each whirlpool runs differently from the ones around it and most of the whirlpools are so close together that you cannot navigate between them. To make it to Uzushio you need to start at the whirlpool that is furthest from the mainland between Uzushio and The Fire Nation. You will need to follow the pattern of the Uzumaki spiral into the island, so it's not a straight line. That means that you will need to go around the island a couple of times until you reach the dock. It can be done on foot, but you will need to pay attention to your chakra output or you will get exhausted very quickly, get too close to any of the whirlpools and they will start to drain your chakra. That won't be a real issue for you, Naruto because of me, but you Uchiha will need to be extremely careful. I would suggest that maybe you use your combined Nine Tails and Susanoo technique to basically step over the barrier, but I don't know if that will set off any protective effects. You need to understand that Uzushio was considered sentient by the Uzumaki, they claimed the island was alive in a way and part of them all. They also believed the barrier to be sentient as well, an extension of Uzushio not just a defensive mechanism. I don't know what will happen when you try to navigate the barrier.”Naruto frowned in thought, “Now that you’ve said the Uzumaki considered Uzushio sentient, that helps me to understand what I’ve been feeling ever since we got here. I think Uzushio is calling out to me in her own way. I feel….not exactly a pull, although that's the only way I can describe it, and the longer I stay not moving towards her the stronger the feeling becomes. Does that make sense to either of you?”“Yes it does. I remember both Mito and Kushina feeling something similar to that, although they never verbalised it to me.”“Well I think we need to leave this space and have a better look at Uzushio. Maybe if I look at her with my sharingan I might be able to see what is happening with the whirlpools.” Sasuke said.Kurama hummed his agreement, “Once you've had a look, show Naruto what you see so I can let you know if it appears any different to what I remember.”Sasuke deactivated his sharingan so he could leave Naruto's mind space, and he waited for Naruto to return from Kurama's space. Together they walked the edge of the water and looked across towards Uzushio. Sasuke reactivated his sharingan and immediately noticed the chakra in the water. He turned to Naruto and showed him what he saw with his sharingan. Kurama came forward, “It looks similar from what I remember although not as imposing, but that might be because the island is in ruins, but it doesn't appear to be corrupted.”“What do you think, Naruto, do you want to try our combined Nine Tails, Susanoo technique to reach the island?” Sasuke asked.“It's beautiful, now I know what that glow was last night. I thought it was luminescent algae or something, but it's the barrier….wow, so much power. Heh, sorry Sasuke, yeah I think it might work. I think it will be better for you especially as then you won't be expending the chakra you would be if we tried to enter on foot.”“Hn, it's okay Naruto, it's definitely awe inspiring. Okay, do you want to try it now or wait a while. We should probably check our supplies before we head over. We don't know if we'll be able to use our summons over there to get supplies to us.”Naruto thought about it, “Yeah, I think that might be good idea. I can get Gamakichi to get us some food and water if you like. While we wait for him I could meditate to build up some nature chakra and go into Sage Mode to see if I can sense anything from here. What do you think?”Sasuke smirked at Naruto before pulling him in for a quick kiss to the cheek. “Sounds good, you summon Gamakichi and I’ll make us some lunch.”“S…sure. What was that for?”“Because you always manage to think out of the box all the time. You may not have the IQ of Shikamaru, but you are the most amazing person I have ever met. You never cease to amaze me with your ideas.”Naruto's cheeks were flaming, he ducked his head and mumbled something that Sasuke couldn't here. He then moved away from the campsite a little to summon Gamakichi. While Naruto organised their supplies, Sasuke started to get lunch ready.Naruto and Sasuke prepared to continue their journey. Naruto had not sensed anything from Uzushio that might pose them a problem. They had everything they needed for at least a month.“Ready?” Sasuke asked.Naruto took a deep breath, feeling the cool ocean air fill his lungs. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”They approached the edge of the shore, and began to weave their signs for Nine Tails mode and the Susanoo. Once they had achieved those forms they merged. There was now a towering Nine Tailed Fox wearing purple armour that resembled a skeletal samurai standing on the shore. They walked towards the whirlpool that Kurama indicated was where they needed to start the entry into Uzushio. “Looks like we won't be able to just step over the barrier, it's too large even for this size.” Sasuke said as they looked over the barrier. The swirling waters reflecting the middy sun. The barrier's size was daunting, but Naruto felt a strange sense of familiarity, as if his Uzumaki heritage resonated with the ocean’s power.“Remember what we talked about?” Sasuke reminded him, his eyes fixed on the churning waters.Naruto nodded, feeling a surge of determination. “We stay away from the whirlpools as much as possible, move in same pattern as the Uzumaki spiral.”With a shared glance, they walked into the barrier's swirling waters. The currents felt like they were pushing them deeper into the heart of Uzushio’s remnants. As they navigated the treacherous waters, Naruto felt a tingling sensation coursing through his veins, a connection to something ancient and powerful.Emerging on the dock at Uzushio, a couple of hours later, they released their shared form. They found themselves standing before the partially submerged ruins of Uzushio. The city was still undeniably beautiful, although muted the colours of the remaining mosaics were still gorgeous. The structures were a blend of resilience and decay. Vines crept along the stone walls, and the remnants of chakra seals glowed faintly in the afternoon light.“This is it,” Naruto whispered, his voice shaking slightly as he took a deep breath.Sasuke nodded, his expression serious. “Let’s see what secrets you’re meant to uncover.”Together, they stepped into the ruins.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Naruto looked around the ruined city in awe. Uzushio was beautiful. He could tell that used to be a magnificent place. He closed his eyes and he could imagine the tall buildings in the centre of the island glowing in the morning light as the sun hit the bright mosaics that seemed to have covered all of the buildings. It was eerily quiet, other than the roar of the whirlpools there was very little sound. When Naruto sniffed the air all he could smell was the ocean. A lot of what he was seeing was not making sense to him, but he couldn't figure out why.Surprisingly, it was actually quite easy to make sense of the city's layout. There was a lot less damage than he would have thought.“Wasn't a war waged here? There's a lot less damage than I expected. A lot of these buildings appear to have toppled over instead of being destroyed by explosions and the like. Ya know.” Naruto said.Sasuke looked around at the ruins, “You're right. I would have expected a lot more rubble and less intact structures. I wonder what actually happened here. I know that Uzushio was attacked by Kumo, Kiri and Iwa, and that those three nations suffered such massive losses, that they still haven't fully recovered from them, but I don't know much else.” Sasuke looked around as he answered Naruto. “Do you notice anything else that's strange, Naruto?”Naruto looked around trying to figure out what else Sasuke had noticed. He turned around in a circle, he knew that there was something else strange about what he was seeing, but he just couldn't put his finger on what it was. Suddenly he spun around in another circle, his eyes wide as he finally noticed what Sasuke was talking about. “Where's all the bodies. I mean, I know that they would only be bones by now, but there's nothing here, other than toppled buildings, to indicate that people were ever here.”“Hn. I can't even see any residual, human chakra when I use my sharingan. There's nothing, no human remains at all.”They continued to walk through the ruins. The deeper into the city they went, they still couldn't see anything that indicated that a lot of people died here. “If I didn't know that a war was waged here and that the defenders had been defeated, I would think that everyone who lived here just got up and left. Ya know.” Naruto said.“Mmm. I think we need to find somewhere to set up camp. I don't know what the weather is going to be like here. I remember Orochimaru saying that whirlpools, especially ones like here, create anomalies in established weather patterns. So we shouldn't assume the weather here will be the same as along the coast of Fire Nation. Once we find a safe place we can think about investigating what might have occurred here. What do you think?”“Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Do you think we should go a little deeper into the city away from the barrier?”“Yes, I do. Not that I think we're in any danger from the whirlpools, but if the weather gets erratic, it will probably be worse nearer to the barrier.”They spent the next hour scouting for a suitable place to set up camp. Finally they found a building that was mostly intact. The lower floor was dry and sheltered, there was a thick layer of dust, but no rubble. The furniture was still here, presumably still in its place, but neither of them wanted to test it out to see if it was sturdy. They cleaned a room of the dust and set up their camp. They decided that they wouldn't light a fire in this room as there was no way for the smoke to escape. In another room was a fireplace. After they checked it out they discovered that was still in good condition, so that's where they built their fire and cooked their dinner. After dinner they decided to scout around the building they were in. They didn't want to go too far from their camp when it was so close to dark. They found that the stairs were still safe. All the buildings they had seen so far appeared to made of stone and decorated with brilliant mosaics. They climbed the stairs and looked around. There were five levels in the building they were in and when they reached the top they realised that they were in the centre of the village. The view from the top level was astonishing. The village appeared to built in a spiral pattern with the centre being the tallest building in the village. Every building in Uzushio had an uninhibited view of the ocean and the barrier. The barrier, although defensive was also beautiful. The vortexes were not only in the water, but in the air as well, and they were much more visible from this side of the barrier than the Fire Nation side. Light danced along the vortexes in rainbows that chased each other in Uzumaki spirals. It added to the view of ocean instead of diminishing it. The roof of the building had been partially destroyed, but from what remained, it appeared that on top of the building was a massive dragon, decorated with red, blue, green and gold mosaics. “This building must have been the Kage tower.” Sasuke said, gently running his hand over the head of the dragon that lay in the middle of the floor. “This is magnificent work, look at the detail, and the fact that it's still in such good condition after nearly three decades is a testament to the workmanship. I wonder if they imbued the structures with seals?” He mused as he activated his sharingan to look deeper into the structure of the dragon.Naruto watched Sasuke in awe, he had never seen Sasuke so fascinated by anything that wasn't Uchiha Clan lore or jutsu before. “What can you see, Sasuke?”“It's amazing, I’ll show you and Kurama shortly, once I’ve looked over the entire piece. I can see the chakra woven through the head, I think that maybe it was even able to be animated to possibly breathe fire or something. It's so intricate, I have never seen anything like it anywhere, and I was with Orochimaru for three years. He would have given anything to see and study this. I'm so glad he couldn't gain access though, imagine the damage that man could do with even rudimentary knowledge of techniques like this. The seals are imbedded and self sustaining. I think some of the energy required is linked to the vortexes. From what I can guess at it looks like the seals were for durability, strength and just to keep it from being damaged by the salt air and I imagine the storms that would have moved through here, being in the middle of the ocean, would have been intense.”Naruto felt a surge of rage well up inside him. The Uzumaki Clan had so much knowledge of seals and had used them in so many different ways, not just to destroy, but to preserve and protect and just to make things beautiful. He had no idea how Sasuke had lived with this anger for as long as he had, he felt like he was going to explode with it.Sasuke looked over at Naruto and noticed that his hands were clenched, his whiskers were darkening, his jaw was tense and he was trembling. He recognised what was happening to Naruto, it had happened to himself many times, each time he found out yet another thing that Konoha had done to his Clan. He walked over to Naruto and spoke quietly, “Naruto……Naruto …..look at me. Please …..look at me. I understand that you're angry, but you have nothing to direct it at, so you need to control it for the moment. Tomorrow we will look for a space for you to safely let off some steam, okay….Naruto can you hear me? Take some deep breaths for me please. That's it in and hold, out and hold, nice and steady. Good, keep that up for me, excellent. Look at me please.” Once Sasuke realised that Naruto was with him again, he took his hands and squeezed gently, “You okay? You with me?” Naruto nodded, “Yeah, sorry about…”“Nope, none of that, you have nothing to apologise for. It's a lot to take in, I understand. I'm not saying you shouldn't be angry, you should.I am. It's just that if you go off here and damage something, knowing you, you'll never forgive yourself.”“Heh, yeah, you're right, I wouldn't forgive myself. Thanks Sasuke. How did you know what I was thinking?”“I noticed your posture and the fact that you seemed to have disassociated a bit. I'm pretty sure I displayed similar signs before most of my rage fuelled rampages.”“Oh.”“It's okay, dobe. I'm not judging you, I truly understand how you feel. I just didn't want to see you beat yourself up if you damaged anything, because I know you would have.”Naruto hung his head as he continued to calm himself down. He was grateful that Sasuke recognised what was happening and stepped in to calm him down, but he was also embarrassed that it was needed, he had hoped that he had control over his emotions by now. Sasuke kissed his cheek and he jerked his head up to look at him. “Stop overthinking stuff.”“H…how…”“Come on Naruto, I’ve been watching you for years. I know most of your tells by now.”“Heh, yeah, okay. So…”“Nope, not doing that again. Stop apologising.”“Yeah, okay. It's just I thought that with everything I've done, all the training, I would have better control by now. Ya know. It's frustrating to realise that I still have so little control over my emotions.”“Hey, there's nothing wrong with your emotional control. You’ve just been overwhelmed with a lot of information. It's okay, you're allowed to be overwhelmed occasionally. Stop trying to live up to unreasonable expectations that others have set.” Sasuke scowled as he said this, Konoha had so very much to answer for. “Come let’s go back downstairs and if you feel up to it, I’ll show you what I saw with my sharingan.”“Yeah, okay. That would be great. I’d love to see that.”They went back downstairs and sat in front of the fireplace and faced each other. Sasuke activated his sharingan and showed Naruto and Kurama what he seen in the dragon head. The next morning Naruto and Sasuke woke wrapped around each other. Naruto's head was resting on Sasuke's chest and Sasuke had his face buried in Naruto's soft, golden hair. Naruto breathed deeply and sighed. He rolled off Sasuke and raised his arms above his head and stretched his body, feeling his joints pop. He turned his head and looked at Sasuke. Sasuke returned the look, raking his eyes down Naruto's torso and back up to his face. Naruto's face split in a flirtatious smile. “Like what you see?”“Hn. Very much. Come here you menace.”Naruto laughed and rolled back towards Sasuke. Sasuke grabbed his face and gave him a hard kiss on the mouth.“Mmmm.” Naruto moaned in pleasure. “What do you have in mind, hmm?”“Less talking, more kissing please.”Naruto was more than happy to oblige. They lay there kissing and touching, enjoying each other. Sasuke rolled them so that he was over Naruto and put his arms either side of Naruto’s head. Sasuke could kiss Naruto forever. He could feel his body temperature rising, he had butterflies in his stomach like he always did wherever Naruto touched him. Naruto’s hair was soft and he ran his fingers through it while he kissed.Naruto ran his hands up and down Sasuke’s arms, squeezing his biceps, running his hands up and down his forearms. Naruto moved his hands behind Sasuke and ran them up and down Sasuke’s back, feeling the ridges of his spine. Naruto then moved his hands into Sasuke's hair and massaged his head with his fingers, before running his hands back down Sasuke’s back and resting them just above his buttocks.Sasuke broke the kiss and looked down at Naruto. Naruto could feel his arousal. He bit his bottom lip while he looked up Sasuke's flushed face. Sasuke hooked his fingers under the waistband of Naruto’s boxers and slipped them off. He marvelled at Naruto, he was perfect. His body showed all the hard training he had done over the years, his legs and arms were well muscled, his chest and abdominals were impressive but not large like Asuma sensei had been. He knelt at Naruto’s feet and he started to kiss his way up Naruto's body. Naruto gasped as Sasuke kissed his feet. Everywhere Sasuke kissed him, Naruto felt warm and tingly. The butterflies were raging in his stomach and he closed his eyes. With his eyes shut his other senses expanded, he could hear Sasuke’s soft breath huffing each time he kissed Naruto, he could smell Sasuke’s natural scent, he could still taste Sasuke on his tongue.Sasuke was in heaven. As he slowly kissed his way up Naruto’s body, he paid rapt attention to his reactions. His soft gasps, the goosebumps running up his skin when Sasuke brushed it with his lips. He looked up at Naruto as he laid there with his eyes closed, just feeling. Naruto was beautiful, he felt he could do this forever. He kissed the small freckles he found on Naruto’s legs and knees, he kissed the mole he found on Naruto’s right thigh. His natural smell was overwhelming Sasuke. He kissed Naruto’s stomach paying particular attention to the seal and then his chest. He continued up to Naruto’s neck. He kissed each ear, Naruto’s forehead , his whiskered cheeks and back down to his lips.Naruto opened his eyes when Sasuke kissed his lips. He was dizzy with the sensations he felt. Naruto broke the kiss and smiled at Sasuke. He then flipped their positions and took Sasuke’s underwear off. Naruto looked at Sasuke. His body was magnificent. He was toned from all his training. His stomach was flat and his chest and abdomen were well muscled. He was slightly leaner than Naruto and he had very little body hair. Naruto pushed Sasuke onto the bed and positioned himself at Sasuke’s feet. He ran his hands over the bony ridges of Sasuke’s feet and up his shins. Naruto followed his hands with light kisses. He moved his hands up Sasuke’s thighs running them around the expanse of his well muscled thighs. He then moved to Sasuke’s stomach and chest gently massaging his chest and moving to his arms, massaging them as well. Naruto traced Sasuke’s facial features and ran his fingers through his hair, massaging his head. Naruto leant down and kissed Sasuke hard.Sasuke let his hands roam Naruto’s body and Naruto did the same. They explored each other paying particular attention to reactions, both verbal and physical. This was more than just sex for both of them. This was a joining of souls as well as bodies.Their kisses became more heated and frantic the more they touched. The smell of their bodies reactions to each other ramped up the heat between them. The gasps every time one of them touched the intimate parts of their bodies, pushed them to touch more. When they finally joined bodies the friction between them was electric. It was like having an itch you didn't even know you had, being scratched. As they neared their peak, their movements became more frantic, sweat dripped from their bodies, their kisses became sloppy as they chased their pleasure. The sounds, smells and sensations all combining to push them over the edge. Naruto’s back arched in pleasure and Sasuke bit down on Naruto’s shoulder as they climaxed together. They lay there letting their heart rates return to normal, kissing each other languidly.“I love you Naruto.”“I love you too, Sasuke.”They lay there for a few moments, before getting up to explore Uzushio. They had a quick breakfast and headed back up to the top floor, to look around the village and decide which direction to head first. They decided to head towards the open ocean side of the island as there appeared to be several areas clear of buildings. They followed the spiral walkway cataloguing everything they saw with Sasuke's sharingan. When they arrived at the open spaces, they realised that they were training grounds. The grounds were in surprisingly good condition considering the time since they were last used. Naruto and Sasuke spent the morning clearing the grounds of overgrowth and debris that appeared to have been blown in by massive winds, as it was obviously not from any of the surrounding buildings.“Where do you think this stuff has come from?” Naruto asked as he moved a large plank of wood. “It looks like the mast of a ship, but I didn't see and wreaks around the island yesterday as we came in.”“Hn. I agree, it does look like a mast. Maybe it's from one of the ships that got destroyed during the war. It looks like it could old enough.” Sasuke said. It appeared that the more they found the less they understood. Not a lot of what they were seeing made any sense with the little information they had about the war. They finished clearing the training grounds and decided to unwind with a friendly spar.Naruto surged forward with fast kicks and powerful strikes. Sasuke countered with swift evasions and well timed takedowns. They circled each other, Naruto grinning widely and Sasuke with his signature smirk in place, exchanging rapid fire combinations of punches and kicks. Naruto unleashed a flurry of strikes, but Sasuke deftly dodged and weaved, closing the distance with a sudden clinch.Sasuke executed a flawless takedown, bringing Naruto crashing to the ground with a resounding thud. Naruto was not one to be outdone, he swept Sasuke's legs out from under him, reversing the position and gaining control. The intensity escalated as they grappled for dominance, each refusing to yield an inch. Naruto unleashed a barrage of strikes, while Sasuke fought to secure a pin.Sweat glistened on their skin as they pushed their bodies to the limit. Time seemed to slow as they traded blows, each moment filled with raw intensity and unyielding determination. Both Naruto and Sasuke refused to relent, their passion for competition burning brighter than ever. Finally, they disengaged, their bodies bruised and battered, sweat glistening on their skin, their chest heaving. They both collapsed on the ground.“I haven’t had such a good workout in ages, thanks Sasuke.”“Hn.”“Bastard.” Naruto laughed. “I wonder if it's safe to swim in the ocean here. Do you think it's safe, Sasuke, or do you think the barrier is too close?”“What's Kurama say, does he remember Mito or your mother swimming when they were here?”Naruto's eyes glazed over for a moment and then he said, “Kurama said mum was never here when she was his jinchûriki. Uzushio had already been destroyed by the time she replaced Mito. He said that there were always people swimming here. The barrier is far enough away that you won't get too close for it to drain your chakra. What do you think about having a quick dip to cool off?”“Sounds good.” Sasuke replied as he started to take his clothes off. They quickly stripped and raced each other to the dock near the training ground. They dove in hitting the water at the same time. They spent the hour horsing around in the water. They got out and lay on the training ground the sun to dry off. Once they were dry, they got dressed and headed towards the nearest building to check it out.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The first building they entered was next to the training ground. It was mostly intact, with just part of its roof missing. The building appeared to have been some sort of observation area. There were large windows facing the training ground, although there was no glass in the windows. There was a long bench along the wall facing the windows, but that was the only furniture in the building. “Nothing we're seeing here makes much sense. This is supposed to be a hidden ninja village that was destroyed by war, but there is no damage here that indicates that a battle was fought here. Most of damage we've seen has been done by time and weather. What are we missing?” Naruto mused. It was almost silent, except for the distant roar of the whirlpools. Naruto’s eyes wandered the deserted streets, a sense of emptiness creeping over him. “Where are the birds? The insects? It’s too quiet…” Naruto murmured, his voice barely breaking the stillness. There was a slight breeze that blew across the still streets, carrying a faint whisper, like the village was trying to tell Naruto its secrets. Naruto stood at the entrance of the observation building, and looked out at the village. The the streets looked aged and weathered but the absence of dust, of nature reclaiming this place, unnerved him.“I don't understand, there's no sound around here other than the ocean and the whirlpools. Where are the other sounds you would usually hear even in a ruin?” Naruto muttered.Sasuke stood beside him, his eyes scanning the surroundings with a sharp, calculating gaze. “No signs of life, no wildlife, no decay. It makes no sense” He ran his hand along a wall, its surface smooth despite years of abandonment. The wind carried the faintest whistle as Naruto and Sasuke stepped out of the observation building. They moved to the next building, which was completely intact, the door swung open without a sound. Inside was an eerily familiar scene. Tables lined the room in neat rows, similar to the medical facilities in Konoha, yet something was deeply off. No equipment, no traces of the people who once worked there. “Strange,” Sasuke muttered, “You’d think that there would be medical equipment lying around. It almost like anything that could give someone any information about the people who lived here was deliberately removed. The only things left behind are generic items that could be found anywhere. In fact so far the only thing we've found that could point to the Uzumaki Clan is the dragon on top of the Uzukage tower and the seals we’ve seen glowing around the village.”Naruto’s eyes flickered toward the tower as Sasuke spoke. The silence seemed to grow heavier, pressing down on his chest. “It’s like the place is fading,” he said, his voice quieter now. “Like they didn’t just destroy Uzushio, they wanted to erase everything. Every trace.”They left the medical facility and continued to walk around the village looking through the buildings looking for anything that could give any indication of what might have happened here. Sasuke walked a few steps ahead, his sharingan activated. He scanned the buildings, the roads, the empty courtyards that stretched out before them. “There’s something off about this place. I can feel traces of chakra, but it’s…wrong. Faint but lingering.” His eyes narrowed, focusing on an area on the dock near the closest whirlpool. “Whatever destroyed Uzushio didn’t leave naturally. It was deliberate.”Naruto followed Sasuke’s gaze, a cold shiver running down his spine. “Deliberate?” His voice was hoarse, tension tightening in his chest. “What do you mean deliberate? Like whatever happened here wasn't just to destroy it… but to erase it completely.”“Yeah. I think that's exactly what the plan was.”They moved closer to area Sasuke was focusing on at the docks, Sasuke activated his sharingan once more, focusing on a glowing seal etched into the stone. It pulsed faintly, as if still alive, though the energy it emitted felt distorted.“Hey, Naruto,” Sasuke said, his voice careful, “I need Kurama to take a look. There’s something off about this seal.”Naruto hesitated before closing his eyes. “Kurama?”Kurama’s deep growl resonated in Naruto’s mind as his red eyes opened. “What is it, Uchiha?”Sasuke didn’t flinch, meeting Kurama’s gaze. “Look at the chakra residue in that seal. It’s been fed an immense amount of power, and it’s still lingering after all this time. It's the only place I have seen so far that is showing any sign that something devastating happened here. Do you recognize what it’s for?”Kurama’s eyes narrowed as he stepped forward, scanning the area. “This seal… It’s connected to the vortexes, as Mito called them. This particular seal was tied to the village’s defenses.”Naruto’s eyes widened, his voice tight. “Defenses?”“It's the seal that controls the vortexes. From what I can remember hearing, the Uzukage or Elders could feed their chakra into the seal to activate the defences. If I remember correctly they had a ultimate defence called Tensei Ryūfū Arashi (Eternal Oath Windstorm Maelstrom). The jutsu used wind manipulation to create tornadoes of wind blades, while water was used to trap and slow down opponents. From the look of the chakra residue, they must have utilised the jutsu.”Naruto’s heart clenched as the pieces began to fall into place. “So they fought back… but it wasn’t enough.” His fists tightened, grief rising within him. “We need to find out what else happened. I have to find out, I can't let this rest.” Determination burned in his eyes, but beneath it, Sasuke could sense Naruto’s grief. He was facing more than just the loss of a place, he was facing the loss of a legacy he barely knew.Naruto crouched down and reached out to touch the seal. Sasuke grabbed his hand, “Dobe! What are you doing? We have no idea what this seal does. Ignoring Sasuke’s warning, Naruto shook Sasuke's hand off and reached out again. “If it’s connected to my family, I have to know.” The moment his fingers grazed the edge of the glowing seal, the air around them changed. The soft hum of chakra grew louder, filling the space with a strange, rhythmic pulse.Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled, a low rumble echoing through the empty streets. The whirlpools started to whine. Naruto staggered back. The seal flared brightly, and for a brief moment, the water around the perimeter of the whirlpools rose up in a huge wall.Naruto’s eyes widened. “Did you see that?”Sasuke nodded, his eyes locked on the now dormant seal.Kurama growled softly. “The Uzumaki poured their chakra into protecting this place, but it wasn’t enough. Whatever attacked them, it was stronger.”Naruto’s voice hardened, the weight of his ancestors’ legacy settling on his shoulders. “We need to find out what really happened here. I can’t let them be forgotten. I have to know.”The village was no longer silent, ever since Naruto had touched the seal, the village seemed to be whispering of things long forgotten, of secrets waiting to be uncovered. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting an orange glow across the ruins of Uzushio, Naruto and Sasuke continued to search Uzushio for anything that could give them a hint of what had played out here, their footsteps echoing through the hollow streets. The air grew cooler, the shadows lengthening as they returned to the Uzukage tower. They prepared their dinner in silence, the only sound the rustle of their movements and the crackling of the fire. Sasuke watched as Naruto grappled with his feelings, noting the tension in his posture, the way he avoided eye contact. “Oi, dobe,” he finally said, breaking the heavy silence. “What are you thinking about? Talk to me, please.”Naruto stood with his back to Sasuke, his shoulders tense, looking at his feet. “I…. I don't know where to start. I'm s..so angry! So frustrated! Gutted! Everything we've found so far has just created more questions. Nothing makes sense here. Who was responsible for the complete obliteration of the Uzumaki Clan? Why was it deemed necessary? How will I be able understand anything about my ancestry if I can't find anything about it? What was the point in coming here if all I get are more questions?” Naruto slammed his fist against the wall as he spoke. Sasuke moved towards Naruto taking his hand gently and pulling him into a comforting embrace. “It's okay, I understand.” Naruto turned, searching Sasuke’s eyes for any hint of understanding. “You d..do?”“Of course I do,” Sasuke replied, his tone steady. “I’m feeling some of those as well. It is very confusing and frustrating. Nothing is really making sense at the moment, but Naruto, we’ll find the answers. Okay? We’ll keep looking until we work it out.” He hesitated, then added, “Kurama said that the Uzumaki considered Uzushio sentient, remember? I don't believe she would allow you in here so easily if she didn't want you to find answers. I think we need to trust her to guide us to what you need to find, in whatever order she has deemed appropriate, okay?”“Y..you truly believed me when I said she was calling me? You think she has a plan or something?” Naruto’s voice wavered, the uncertainty clear.“Of course I believed you, why wouldn't I? I know you better than most, and you're not the type of person to say things like that unless you truly believe and feel it.” Sasuke paused, his gaze thoughtful. “As for a plan, I’m not sure if it is a plan as such, but I do believe Uzushio is guiding you somewhat. What made you touch the seal today? I know you can be a little impulsive at times, but I’ve never known you to touch unknown seals before.”A shy smile crept onto Naruto’s face, though the tension lingered in his shoulders. “Heh, yeah I guess you're there. I..I just had to touch it, like som..something was te..telling me that I had to touch it. L…like it was calling out to me.” He scratched the back of his head, sheepishly.“Mmm, I guess that makes sense. If you hadn't touched it, I believe Uzushio would still be silent. I believe that you woke her up by touching the seal, like she was waiting for you to do that.” Sasuke’s voice was softer now, the edges of his usual sarcasm blunted by the seriousness of their situation.Naruto nodded slowly, glancing out the window, “Yeah, I think so too. It's a lot less eerie here now that the is some sounds, although not the sounds I would expect. Somehow the whispers aren't creepy but soothing.” He turned back to Sasuke, vulnerability shining through. “You probably think I’m crazy saying that, but that's how it feels to me.”“I don't think you're crazy at all.” Sasuke replied, meeting Naruto’s gaze firmly. “Although I must admit I find the whispers a little strange, but I guess their not for me they're for you.”The sun finally dipped below the horizon, the last rays of light fading as darkness enveloped Uzushio. The whispers swirled around them, wrapping them in a soft cocoon, a reminder that even in ruins, the echoes of the past still held life. Together, they sat in the glow of the fire, the warmth of their bond pushing back the chill of the unknown, determined to uncover the truth that lay buried beneath the whispers of Uzushio.**************The next morning, the new sounds of Uzushio stirred them from sleep, the whispers weaving through the streets and corridors like a forgotten song. Naruto stretched his arms above his head, feeling his joints pop, he rubbed his eyes and blinked at the sunlight streaming through the windows of the Uzukage tower. “Man, it's almost unnerving to hear sounds, after not hearing anything but the vortexes. I keep getting the feeling that Uzushio is trying to tell me something,” he muttered, glancing at Sasuke, who was already awake, sitting cross-legged and staring out toward the distant whirlpools.“I agree, I think she is,” Sasuke replied, his voice quiet but alert. “I think we should explore this building a bit further, keep looking. I think if we're going to find anything if importance, it will be here.”“But wouldn't this have been the first place the invaders would have looked?”“Yes, but I get the feeling that they either didn't find anything, or they never made it actually onto the island.”“What makes you say that?”“A couple of things. One there was nothing here except stuff that could be found anywhere, nothing and no one of importance. No bodies of the Uzumaki who died here or the invaders that would've also died here, because let’s be honest, after seeing that seal yesterday, there's no way it didn't take out a lot of the invaders. I remember when we learned about the downfall of Uzushio, we were told that Kiri, Kumo and Iwa suffered such massive losses that they never recovered from. Two after you touched the seal, Uzushio seemed to awaken, like she was waiting for you , well maybe not you specifically, but an Uzumaki strong enough to do just that. I get the feeling that she has made sure no one has found anything, but I think now she wants you to find answers.”Naruto nodded, determined. “ All right. Let’s see if your assumptions are correct, and Uzushio’s ready to give up her secrets, ya know ”They searched inside the Uzukage tower, walking down long forgotten corridors. The stone walls were still solid, and every step Naruto felt the weight of history. Naruto traced his hand along the walls, feeling the faint pulse of chakra that seemed to hum beneath the surface.“Can you feel or see the chakra in the walls?” Naruto asked, his brow furrowing.“Yeah, it's so strange after not being able sense any at all when we first arrived. Now the village seems saturated in chakra.” Sasuke answered, his Sharingan flickering to life. “There’s something beneath this building, a faint chakra residue. It’s old, but strong. We might be standing above something important.”Naruto’s eyes widened in excitement. “You mean like a hidden chamber?”Sasuke gave a small nod, his expression focused as he scanned the floor beneath their feet. “Maybe. Let’s see if we can find an entrance.”They continued to explore the tower, moving with careful precision. It wasn’t until they reached a corner of the lowest floor that Sasuke stopped abruptly, his gaze fixed on a portion of the wall.“Look here,” Sasuke said, stepping closer. “There’s something off about this part of the wall. The chakra signature is different, stronger here.”Naruto approached, eyes narrowing as he reached out to touch the stone. He could feel the warmth, chakra pulsing softly under his fingertips. “Yeah, I can definitely feel something different here,” he murmured. He turned to Sasuke with a grin. “Let’s see what happens when we apply a little chakra, eh?”Sasuke raised an eyebrow, smirking. “Just try not to destroy the entire tower, dobe.”Naruto laughed, cracking his knuckles. “No promises.”Channeling chakra into his hands, Naruto placed his hand on the stone. The wall trembled slightly, then lit up like a beacon. The stone seemed to ripple, like water disturbed by a pebble, and then a section of the wall slid inward with a low, grinding sound.“Whoa…” Naruto breathed, stepping back as the hidden doorway revealed itself.Behind the wall was a narrow dark staircase leading downward. A cool draft swept up from below, carrying with it the faint scent of something ancient, dust and time long forgotten.“It’s a hidden chamber,” Sasuke confirmed, stepping forward, his Sharingan still active. “There’s more chakra residue down there. Whatever this place was hiding, it’s deep underground.”Naruto’s heart raced with anticipation. “All right, let's go.”They carefully descended the staircase, the light from the tower fading as the shadows thickened around them. Sasuke activated a small flame in his hand, to light their way. The deeper they went, the cooler the air became. When they finally reached the bottom, they found themselves in a small, circular chamber, the walls lined with strange markings that glowed faintly in the dim light.“Look at these seals,” Naruto said, running his fingers over the seals carved into the stone, that lit up when he touched them, then died back down when moved away. “They’re not like any seals I’ve seen before. It’s almost like a combination of different techniques, but… older.”Sasuke moved closer, his Sharingan scanning the chamber with intensity. “You're right. It does appear to be almost ancient, but it’s… refined, more complex than anything we’ve seen on the surface.” His eyes flickered toward the center of the room, where a large stone pedestal stood.Naruto approached the pedestal cautiously, his heart pounding. “What do you think this is? There's nothing on top of it. Do you think it's some kind of relic? Maybe a key to what happened here?”As he reached out to touch it, Sasuke stopped him. “Wait. Let me check for any traps.”Sasuke activated his Sharingan fully, scanning the pedestal and the seals surrounding it. After a few tense moments, he shook his head. “No traps, that I can tell. It’s safe.”Naruto nodded and placed his hand on the pedestal. As soon as his palm made contact, a pulse of chakra shot through the room, the symbols on the walls flaring to life. The chamber hummed with energy, and the ground trembled beneath their feet.Suddenly, the ceiling above them shifted, revealing a mural that had been hidden beneath layers of stone. The mural depicted a great battle, whirlpools raging as warriors fought, their faces obscured, but the Uzumaki symbol was clear on their armor. At the heart of the chaos, a figure stood—an Uzumaki leader, his hand raised, commanding the whirlpools and the storm.Naruto’s eyes widened in awe. “This… this is it. This is the history of Uzushio.”Sasuke stepped beside him, his gaze sharp. “It’s more than that. Look closer.”Naruto squinted, following Sasuke’s line of sight. At the edges of the mural, shadowy figures loomed, their faces indistinct, but there was something ominous about them. They seemed to be watching the destruction from a distance, their presence almost ethereal.“Who do you think they are?” Naruto whispered, a chill running down his spine.“Not sure, but whoever they are,” Sasuke said quietly, “they didn’t just watch. They orchestrated this.”Naruto clenched his fists, anger and determination burning in his chest. “We have to find out more. We have to know who wiped out my clan.”Sasuke nodded, his eyes never leaving the mural. “And we will. This is only the beginning.”As they stood in the hidden chamber, the echoes of the past surrounding them, Uzushio’s whispers grew louder, urging them forward, promising answers yet to be uncovered. Naruto placed his hand on the pedestal again and left it there. This time the mural began to move as it showed Naruto and Sasuke, the last Uzukage of Uzushio as he made his last stand.Naruto and Sasuke watched as the mural displayed the story of Uzushio’s destruction like a moving painting. The Uzukage fought with the fury of a storm, commanding the forces of nature as seals flared in the air around him. They watched him feeding the vortexes with his chakra. They watched the tornadoes form, wind blades ripping through everything. They saw the water rise up in a massive wall stopping the attackers from escaping the tornadoes. His face was stony, like a man who knew his fate and had accepted it. “Wow. So that's what it looks like when used in battle.” Naruto breathed. “ It's beautiful. Terrifying, but beautiful.”But it wasn’t just the physical battle that was depicted, the Uzukage’s struggle was deeper. Behind him,the shadowy figures, grew more distinct. They weren’t ordinary shinobi. Their outlines shimmered, fading in and out of existence, their presence menacing but elusive.Naruto’s breath caught in his throat as he realized what he was seeing. “Those figures… they’re not just invaders. They’re something else. What the hell are they?”Sasuke narrowed his eyes, his Sharingan spinning rapidly as he analyzed the figures. “They’re using chakra, but it’s not like anything I’ve ever seen. It’s not human. It’s like they’re manipulating something… darker.”As they continued to watch, the Uzukage turned his back to the vortexes, directing his power not at the invaders but at the ethereal figures. His hands moved in complex seals, and for a brief moment, the shadows recoiled as if he had uncovered their weakness. But then, the vortexes faltered, and with one final, defiant glance, the Uzukage unleashed a devastating wave of chakra. The entire scene was swallowed in a brilliant, blinding flash, as the flash died they could see that nothing was left, no one and nothing. The mural fell silent once more, the movement ceasing.Naruto’s fists tightened, the emotion in his chest a whirlwind. “He knew he couldn’t win,” Naruto murmured, his voice thick. “But he fought anyway. He didn’t just fight the other villages, he fought those… things too.”Sasuke stepped closer to Naruto, his gaze unwavering. “It seems like the invaders weren’t the only ones responsible for Uzushio’s fall. These figures, whatever they are, played a part in it. But why? What did they want from your clan?”Naruto shook his head, still staring at the mural, his mind racing. “I don’t know. But now, we know for sure that Uzushio’s destruction wasn’t just a battle. It was something bigger. At least we now know why there was nothing here to indicate that a battle had been waged here. The Uzukage’s final jutsu obliterated everything. He made sure nothing was left for those th..things to find.”A low hum echoed through the chamber, and Naruto realized the pedestal was reacting to his chakra again. He could feel it, Uzushio was guiding him, urging him to keep going, keep looking.Sasuke noticed the change and placed a hand on Naruto’s shoulder. “This is only the beginning, Naruto. There’s more to uncover. If Uzushio’s alive in some way, she’s trying to show you the truth.”Naruto nodded, determination hardening in his chest. “We need to find out what those shadowy figures are and why they targeted my clan. Uzushio still has answers, and I’m going to find them.”As they turned to leave the hidden chamber, the whispers of the village grew louder, almost as if they were bidding them farewell for now, but beckoning them deeper into the mysteries of the past. They ascended the stairs with renewed purpose, Uzushio’s secrets still waiting to be unraveled.

The following morning they stood once again in the hidden chamber. Uzushio’s whispers grew louder, urging them forward, promising answers yet to be uncovered. Naruto placed his hand on the pedestal again, and the mural began to move, this time showing scenes of the Sage of Six Paths meeting with the Uzumaki elders and the first Uzukage of Uzushio. Before their eyes, the Sage of Six Paths, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, handed over a glowing scroll to the Uzukage. Naruto's chest tightened as he watched the scene unfold. The Sage spoke with wisdom and authority, entrusting the Uzumaki Clan with the sacred duty of containing the shadowy figures. “The balance of chakra must be maintained to preserve peace. Your clan’s mastery of sealing is unparalleled, and I entrust you with the responsibility of containing these dark entities, that even I cannot destroy. Should these beings, remnants of corrupted chakra from the dawn of chakra itself, ever threaten the world, your seals will hold the key to their destruction, and are the only thing standing between peace and ruin.”Naruto's thoughts raced, We….. the Uzumaki, were entrusted with protecting the world from these beings. The balance of the seals….of chakra… it was all on the Uzumaki! The Uzukage bowed respectfully, acknowledging the immense responsibility. “We shall protect the world with our lives if necessary. These shadows will not bring ruin upon our land.”The mural faded, leaving Naruto and Sasuke with a newfound understanding of the Uzumaki clan’s legacy.Naruto's pulse quickened, his heart pounding in his ears. It felt as if the weight of centuries was pressing down on him, threatening to crush him. The legacy of his Clan, had been burdened with protecting the world from an ancient evil. Now that responsibility had fallen to him, a legacy he’d never even known existed.“The Sage entrusted us, the Uzumaki, with this… with the seals. We were supposed to protect the world from those things?” Naruto said his voice trembling with a mix of awe and disbelief.“It makes sense. The Uzumaki were known for their unparalleled fūinjutsu. But something went wrong. Uzushio was destroyed, and these shadows… they must have been set free.” Sasuke replied.“How will I even be able to do this? I've never learnt any Uzumaki seals or jutsu. There was no one to teach me, and even if there had been, nobody in Konoha would have bothered to show me anyway.” The question gnawed at him, and for the first time in a long while, doubt crept into his mind. The Sage hadn’t chosen him, after all. He was just a kid from Konoha who happened to have the right bloodline. “What if I’m not strong enough? What if I fail, what if Uzushio rejects me?”He clenched his fists, his nails digging into the palms of his hands. “I was never trained for this.” The burning anger he had always directed at the people who hurt his friends, his village, it felt different now, tempered by the creeping fear that maybe, just maybe, he wasn’t enough.Sasuke’s voice broke through his thoughts. “Dobe. This is not like you. Where is the typical Naruto resolve. Your ninja way, remember? I believe in you, you will find a way, you always do. Don't forget, I’m here to help, so is Kurama. We will do whatever it takes to help you with this.” He took Naruto's hand in his.Naruto's voice trembled, not from anger, but from the enormity of what had been lost, of what could still be lost. “My clan failed once. And now it’s on me to fix it. But what if I can’t?”The weight of his words hung in the air. He wanted to scream, to lash out at the injustice of it all, but deep down, fear gripped him. The fear that he might not be enough this time. That no matter how many times he’d fought and won before, this was different. His entire body shook. He was torn between the overwhelming legacy of his clan and the fierce determination within him.“No.” He slammed his right fist into his left hand, “I can’t let this break me. I won’t.” The doubt lingered, but his resolve hardened. He didn’t have the luxury of hesitation, not when the world was depending on him to right a wrong centuries in the making.“I’m not gonna let Uzushio’s legacy die,” he said, more to himself than to Sasuke. His voice grew stronger, as if daring the doubt to linger a moment longer. “I’m gonna do my best to protect everyone, just like they did. No matter what.”But even as he spoke, the weight of that promise lingered, and Naruto couldn’t help but wonder if he was truly strong enough to carry it.The mural shifted again. They watched as it showed Uzushio under siege. Armies from Kiri, Kumo, and Iwa stormed the island, their forces clashing with the Uzumaki defenders. But in the shadows, hidden from the battlefield, Danzo Shimura stood, meeting with enemy leaders, his face twisted in cold ambition.“The Uzumaki seals hold the key to unimaginable power. Join me, and together we will control it. Konoha must rise above the rest, and Uzushio’s destruction will ensure that no one can stand in our way.”The mural depicted the seals weakening as Danzo and the allied forces attacked Uzushio. The shadowy figures, vague, monstrous beings, began to seep out from the cracks in the seals, feeding on the chaos.Naruto clenched his fists, his anger simmering. “It was Danzo… he betrayed this trust, destabilising the seals and unleashing these shadows.”“Exactly. He saw an opportunity for power and exploited it, disregarding the balance and the lives that depended on those seals. Now, these dark entities are free.” Sasuke said.Sasuke’s eyes narrowed, his Sharingan blazing as he processed the enormity of the betrayal. “Danzo didn’t just betray Uzushio and Konoha, he betrayed the entire world, for his own gain, and now we’re paying the price.”“He used Kiri, Kumo, and Iwa to destroy Uzushio…for power.” Naruto's voice was thick with fury. “He sold out my clan, Sasuke. We need to figure out where the seals are and how to strengthen them. There must be something left behind here that can tell us how.”As Naruto spoke the mural shifted once more. This time words in a forgotten script began to illuminate across the chamber, coiling around the edges of the mural like a protective seal.Naruto's eyes widened, “What is this? These markings, they weren’t here before.”Sasuke’s Sharingan flickered to life, scanning the new symbols. “It’s another fūinjutsu layer. A memory… left behind.”Suddenly, the light from the markings flared brightly, and the image of the last Uzukage appeared, projected from the stone. His eyes gleamed with the wisdom and strength of a leader who knew the world’s fragility all too well. The projection’s voice echoed through the chamber, filled with seriousness and purpose.“To my descendants who survive the downfall of our great village, if you are hearing this, then Uzushio has fallen to treachery and war. But know this, Uzushio’s soul is not lost. I have hidden everything deep within these walls, buried beneath the very foundations of our village.”The Uzukage’s figure gestured outward, as if commanding the air itself. The ground beneath their feet trembled faintly, and the chamber walls seemed to pulse with life, revealing hidden veins of chakra running through the stone. The veins appeared to be pointing toward something.“All the scrolls, the techniques, the artefacts that define our legacy as the Uzumaki clan, everything sacred to Uzushio is hidden, buried beyond the reach of those who seek power but lack understanding. They will survive the destruction of our home, but only a true Uzumaki, one both strong and resilient, will be able to uncover them.”Naruto’s breath hitched. His heart raced as the full meaning of the message dawned on him. The Uzukage had planned for this, had known that Uzushio would be destroyed, but had taken steps to ensure that their knowledge would not be lost forever.“Our enemies will search the ruins, believing they have crushed us. But only a descendant of the Uzumaki, one who can withstand the trials left behind, will have the strength and resolve to find our legacy. It is the last gift of Uzushio.”The words echoed in Naruto’s mind, layering on top of everything he had just learned about Danzo’s betrayal and the shadows that threatened the world. The burden of his clan’s history weighed heavily on his shoulders, but with it came a fierce sense of pride.“So this is why no one has ever found anything. Even after Uzushio’s destruction, even with Kiri, Kumo, and Iwa searching for power, they could never find it.” Sasuke said quietly, his gaze shifted to Naruto. “They were never strong enough.”Naruto clenched his fists, his chest swelling with determination. “But I am.” His voice rang with newfound conviction. “I’m the one who’s gonna find it. I’ll bring back everything Uzushio protected and make sure no one uses it for evil again.”Sasuke studied him for a moment, then nodded. “If anyone can uncover this village's secrets, it’s you.”Naruto looked back at the projection, watching as the Uzukage’s figure began to fade, leaving them alone in the chamber once more. But his final words lingered in the air.“Seek the heart of Uzushio, my descendant. Only there will you find what has been hidden. And only there can you continue the legacy of our clan.”Naruto felt a surge of energy course through him as he turned away from the mural, his mind racing. The heart of Uzushio, it was the key to everything his clan had hidden away to protect the world.“We need to find this heart, Sasuke. That’s where it all is, the scrolls, the artefacts. Everything Uzushio was protecting.”“And we need to do it before anyone else gets wind of this. Danzo may be gone, but there are always others who will seek the power buried here.”Naruto nodded, already feeling the pull of Uzushio guiding him. He knew that the trials ahead would not be easy. Uzushio had been fortified with the greatest sealing techniques in the world, and those seals had been designed to test even the most resilient Uzumaki. As Naruto stood there he felt a strange sense of clarity. He wasn’t just fighting for himself anymore. He was fighting for the legacy of his clan, for their memory and for the world they had sworn to protect.“Let’s go, Sasuke. Uzushio isn’t done yet. We have to stop them. Not just for Uzushio, but for everyone.” Naruto's eyes narrowed in determination.“Agreed. We need to find the remaining seals and reinforce them, ensuring that these entities can’t spread further. But first, we need to uncover more about how Danzo destabilised them.”With those words, they left the hidden chamber, following the veins of chakra deeper into Uzushio. The whispers of Uzushio seemed to guide them, revealing pathways and secrets that had been buried for decades. They found themselves in front of a heavy stone door that was covered with seals they hadn't seen anywhere else.“This has to be it,” Naruto murmured, his voice tight. His fingers grazed the edge of the stone door, tracing the intricate patterns. “This is where the chakra has led us, this must be where everything went wrong.” He pressed his hand to the seal in the centre of the door and pushed a tendril of chakra into it. The door groaned as it swung open. Inside the door was another chamber covered in the dust of ages. At the center, another old pedestal stood, its surface covered in strange seals. The walls around them pulsed with ancient chakra veins, as though Uzushio itself was trying to remember what had been lost. As Naruto and Sasuke stepped forward, the pedestal flared to life, casting the room in an eerie light.Suddenly, the stone floor beneath them trembled, and an image flickered into view. A shadowy figure appeared, standing in the middle of the chamber. His face, familiar and cold, twisted with ambition.“Danzo,” Sasuke hissed, eyes narrowing. The projection of the man from years ago was unmistakable. He was younger, but face still bore the same ruthless determination.Naruto’s teeth ground together as he watched Danzo approach the center of the room, where there was an array of seals that once held the ancient shadowy entities in place. The projection played out a memory long sealed away, Danzo standing before the seals, surrounded by the elders of the Uzumaki clan, who had not yet realised the depth of his betrayal.“You’re sure of this, Uzukage?” Danzo’s voice came through, flat and calculating. “These seals contain power far beyond what anyone in this world could imagine. Power that could shift the balance of the entire shinobi world.”The Uzukage nodded solemnly, unaware of the treachery standing beside him. “These seals hold the remnants of corrupted chakra from the dawn of our world. They are not meant to be wielded. Only contained. To release them would bring chaos.”Danzo’s lips curled into a thin smile, though it was clear he had no intention of letting that power remain sealed. “And yet, the potential here… Imagine what Konoha could achieve with such power. We could secure peace. Permanently.”The Uzukage turned sharply. “This power cannot be used for such ends, Danzo. The seals are not for exploitation. They are a responsibility we bear for the safety of the world. It would be catastrophic to release these seals. Trust us, Danzo. Konoha would not gain anything, it would be destroyed.”Danzo looked contemplative, “If you're sure, I guess the Uzumaki would know best in this case.” The Elders and Uzukage looked relieved and appeased with Danzo’s statement. The mural flickered and the scene changed.Danzo was again in the chamber. This time with a single Elder. The men stood in front of the seals containing the corrupted chakra. Danzo’s face darkened, his tone cold. “The Uzukage is a fool, he lacks the foresight to see how Uzushio and Konoha must rise above the others. We must have the strength to control this power, or someone else will.”Naruto’s breath hitched, watching the scene unfold with growing rage. This bastard was already planning it back then…. “What's wrong with that Elder, why is he helping Danzo?”Sasuke activated his Sharingan, he seems to be under some kind of mind control. He must have learned a jutsu from the Yamanaka, or probably stole it. His arm is already bandaged. He must already have some stolen Uchiha Sharingans under there.”The memory shifted as Danzo walked over to the seals. His hand hovered over the array of protective inscriptions that had been passed down by the Uzumaki for generations. With a flick of his wrist, Danzo produced a kunai coated in an unnatural chakra, one that pulsed with an ominous energy. He slashed it across the surface of the seal, and the entire room seemed to darken. The ancient fūinjutsu that had held the entities at bay flickered, destabilising in an instant.Naruto’s eyes widened. “That… that chakra… What did he do?”Sasuke’s Sharingan zoomed in, studying the chakra flow. “It’s a corruption technique. Danzo must have learned to alter the chakra in the seals, creating micro-tears within them, weak points. Once those tears spread, the seals couldn’t hold anymore.”Danzo’s voice continued in the memory. “By the time anyone realises what’s happened, it’ll be too late. The world will descend into chaos… and Konoha will be the only one standing.” Danzo then turned his kunai on the Elder and slashed his throat. He then vanished into the shadows, leaving the seals to unravel on their own. The memory faded, leaving Naruto and Sasuke in the silent chamber, the truth of Danzo’s betrayal hanging thick in the air.Naruto’s fists shook with barely restrained fury. “He… He did this. He sabotaged the seals, knowing Uzushio would fall because of it.… just for power.”Sasuke’s eyes remained cold, though his voice was calm. “He used the corruption in the seals to destabilise them, making it look like Uzushio’s defenses were weak. Then, when the shadows started to escape, it weakened Uzushio even further. By the time Kiri, Kumo, and Iwa attacked, the seals were too damaged to hold.”Naruto’s breath came out in ragged gasps as the enormity of it sank in. “So Uzushio wasn’t just destroyed by the other villages… it was already broken from the inside.”Sasuke nodded. “Danzo played all sides. He made sure the seals failed, and then convinced the other villages to attack while Uzushio was vulnerable.”Naruto’s knuckles were white, his anger simmering beneath the surface. “He unleashed those shadows… and he got away with it. He let my clan be wiped out just so Konoha could come out on top.”For a long moment, there was only silence in the chamber, broken by the faint hum of chakra still lingering in the walls. Naruto’s shoulders trembled, torn between the urge to destroy everything in his path and the weight of grief for his fallen clan.“We can’t let this stand,” Naruto growled, his voice low and dangerous. “I don’t care that Danzo’s dead. We have to fix this.”Sasuke’s eyes met Naruto’s, calm and steady. “We will. But first, we need to understand how to reinforce the seals. There’s still a chance to stop the shadows from spreading. We have to finish what the Uzumaki started.”Naruto nodded, his expression hardening with determination. “We’ll find a way. I’ll make sure Uzushio’s legacy lives on, and I’ll make sure no one ever uses these seals for something like this again.”As they turned to leave the chamber, the memory of Danzo’s cold ambition still echoed in their minds. But now they understood the truth. Uzushio hadn’t fallen because of its weakness, it had been betrayed from within. And Naruto would make sure that betrayal was never forgotten.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Naruto and Sasuke had followed the veins of chakra through the bowels of Uzushio. Now they stood before a sealed door, the inscriptions worn by time but still radiating power. Naruto touched the centre seal. The stone door slid open with a heavy groan, revealing a dimly lit chamber that radiated with power. Naruto stepped inside, his heartbeat echoing in the eerie silence. The walls were covered in intricate sealing symbols, each one pulsating faintly with chakra, like it was alive. He could feel it, this wasn’t just a chamber. It was Uzushio, watching him.Sasuke stood at the threshold, his Sharingan flickering as he scanned the room. The seals were ancient, their chakra thick and knotted with power. He frowned. “I can’t follow you, Naruto. This place… it’s reacting to your bloodline.”Naruto swallowed, feeling the weight of those words. This was his trial. No one else could help him. “Yeah. I guess this is it, then.”As the stone door slammed shut, sealing Naruto inside. Sasuke’s hand clenched around the hilt of his sword. Tch. Of course it has to be him. He didn’t like this. It reminded him too much of the trials he had faced alone, the crushing weight of legacy pressing down on his shoulders. Sasuke’s Sharingan scanned the sealed door, watching as the faint glow of chakra pulsed from the inscriptions. He could still feel Naruto’s presence, his chakra fluctuating wildly within. A part of Sasuke itched to break down the door, to help him. But this was Naruto’s trial. Sasuke knew better than anyone the importance of facing your demons alone. Still, he couldn’t shake the unease settling in his chest.Inside the room, Naruto looked around. The air around him grew thick, and the seals on the walls flared to life. The faint whispers of the chamber grew louder, swirling in his mind.“Uzumaki…”Naruto’s head snapped toward the center of the room, where a pedestal stood, surrounded by glowing lines of fūinjutsu. It was a puzzle of seals, layered in a complex array that even he, without any knowledge of fūinjutsu, could tell was almost impossible to decipher. His stomach tightened.“How the hell am I supposed to do this?” Naruto muttered under his breath, stepping closer to the pedestal. He had never been taught fūinjutsu. He had always relied on brute strength, chakra, and instinct. But this… this was different. This wasn’t something he could punch or talk his way through.Naruto took a deep breath and reached out tentatively, his hand hovering over the seals. The symbols reacted immediately, shifting and swirling, like they were testing him. For a split second, he felt a surge of resistance, like a wall of chakra slamming back at him. He yanked his hand back, “Damn it.”He murmured, eyes wide. The room began to rumble, a warning that this wasn’t a simple puzzle. He clenched his fist. “Okay, Uzushio, you wanna fight me? Bring it on.”He placed his hand back down, this time bracing himself. The moment his fingers touched the surface, the symbols writhed violently, but Naruto held firm. I won’t back down this time. The walls around him shifted, and the seals started to rearrange themselves into new patterns. Pillars of chakra shot up from the ground, each one swirling with the same symbols, twisting into knots that seemed to tighten the air around him. The walls were closing in.His pulse quickened. “Okay, okay… think, Naruto. You’ve gotta figure this out, ya know.”He dropped to one knee, pressing his palm against the floor. The chakra veins pulsing beneath the surface reminded him of Kurama’s chakra network inside him, alive, moving, connected. Maybe that was the key. The seals weren’t just random patterns. They were part of the very essence of Uzushio, and part of him too.“Right… I’m an Uzumaki. This place is supposed to test me. It’s not just about knowing fūinjutsu. It’s about being strong enough to handle whatever’s thrown at me.”The seals on the pillars flared brighter, as if in response to his thoughts. He didn’t have the technical knowledge, but he had something else. Instinct. Determination. His gut had never steered him wrong before.Naruto stood up, his resolve hardening. “Alright. Let’s do this.”He closed his eyes and reached deep inside himself, feeling for the pulse of his own chakra. It roared to life, a swirling storm of energy that was raw and untamed, but also uniquely his. He focused on it, trying to connect it with the energy in the room.Slowly, he extended his chakra outward, letting it flow into the nearest pillar. The moment his chakra touched the swirling seals, they flared violently, pushing back against him. The energy was overwhelming, like trying to control a raging river with his bare hands. Sweat dripped down his forehead as the pressure intensified.“Come on… work with me here,” Naruto growled, his brow furrowing in determination. The seals fought against him, but Naruto pushed harder, his chakra latching onto the flow of energy. Slowly, the resistance began to ease. The symbols on the pillar started to slow their frantic spinning, syncing with the rhythm of his chakra.“That’s it…” Naruto muttered, his voice strained with concentration. He extended his chakra further, connecting to another pillar, and then another. Each one responded to his chakra differently, resisting at first, but then yielding as he adapted to their flow. He could feel the seals testing him, probing his resolve, his willpower. They weren’t just challenging his knowledge, they were testing the very core of who he was.As his chakra linked with the last pillar, the ground trembled beneath his feet. The seals on the floor began to glow, brighter and brighter, until the entire room was bathed in a crimson light. The pressure in the room suddenly lifted, the air becoming lighter. Then, without warning, the ground beneath him collapsed.Naruto’s heart lurched as he fell through the floor, dropping into a dark abyss. Instinctively, he called on Kurama’s chakra, entering tailed beast mode to slow his fall. He landed in a crouch, breathing heavily, his mind racing. The chamber had led him deeper into Uzushio, but what lay ahead was still unknown. When he looked up, Naruto saw that the walls of this new chamber were covered in even more intricate seals, larger, more complex than anything he had seen before. At the center, a massive stone monolith stood, etched with the Uzumaki spiral and pulsing with raw energy.Naruto’s breath caught in his throat. “This… This is the final part of the trial.”There was no time to hesitate. The seals on the walls were beginning to crack, and the chakra within them was becoming unstable. If he didn’t act fast, the entire chamber would collapse on him.He stepped toward the monolith, heart pounding in his chest. This wasn’t about knowledge anymore. This was about proving himself worthy of the Uzumaki name. Proving that he was strong enough to carry the legacy of his ancestors.“I don’t need to understand fūinjutsu, ya know.” Naruto said, his voice filled with conviction. “I just need to trust myself.”He placed both hands on the monolith, pouring his chakra into it. The seals roared to life around him, but Naruto didn’t falter. He pushed harder, forcing his chakra to meld with the monolith, to become part of it. The seals fought back, testing him one last time.Naruto was unyielding. His will, his spirit, his determination, they were stronger than the seals, stronger than the trial itself. As his chakra surged into the monolith, the entire room trembled. With a deafening crack, the seals on the walls shattered, releasing a wave of energy that shot through the chamber. The monolith glowed brightly, and the ground beneath him stabilised.Naruto collapsed to one knee, gasping for breath. His body felt drained, exhausted, but he had done it. He had passed the trial, not by knowing the intricacies of fūinjutsu, but by trusting in his instincts and the strength of his will.As the glow from the monolith faded, the walls around him shifted once more, revealing a hidden passage leading deeper into the ruins. He could feel it now, the heart of Uzushio was close.Naruto stood up, his exhaustion melting away in the face of his growing determination. He hadn’t needed the knowledge of fūinjutsu to pass the trial. All he had needed was the strength to push forward, no matter the odds.“Looks like I’ve still got a lot to learn,” Naruto muttered with a small grin, brushing the dust off his pants. “But I’m not giving up. Not now.”With renewed purpose, he stepped toward the passage, ready to uncover the secrets of his clan.Naruto stepped into the next chamber. This room was different, quieter, almost unnervingly so. There were no glowing seals or swirling chakra patterns. Instead, the walls were lined with faded murals, depicting scenes from Uzushio’s long lost past. Battles, moments of triumph, and scenes of everyday life played out before him, frozen in time.At the center of the room stood an ornate stone altar. Upon it sat two items, an ancient scroll tied with a crimson cord, and a cracked mask resembling the face of an elder, its features distorted by age and anger.Naruto hesitated, a strange feeling creeping over him. He could feel something tugging at his mind, a pull from deep within the chamber, like a presence long forgotten but still watching. He stepped closer to the altar, his fingers brushing the scroll, and the room shifted around him.The murals began to move, the chamber darkened, engulfed by swirling mists. Voices, faint whispers of the past, echoed through the room.“Uzumaki… Naruto…” the voices chanted, calling out from every direction. The mists coiled around him, forming ghostly shapes, figures from long ago, wearing the unmistakable spiral insignia of his clan. The Uzumaki ancestors stood before him, their eyes filled with sorrow, their faces lined with the weight of their responsibilities. One figure stepped forward, an elder, his presence commanding. He carried a staff, and his deep set eyes bore into Naruto’s soul. “You stand at the threshold of our memory, Naruto Uzumaki,” the elder said. “This is the trial of your ancestors. You must decide whether to follow the path of vengeance… or forgiveness.”Naruto blinked, caught off guard. “Forgiveness or vengeance… for what?”The elder gestured toward the mural behind him, where the scene of Uzushio’s destruction played out in vivid detail. The destruction of the village. The Uzukage unleashing Tensei Ryūfū Arashi (Eternal Oath Windstorm Maelstrom) during the final siege of enemy forces, Kiri, Kumo, Iwa, and the traitorous hand of Danzo Shimura, orchestrating their downfall.“Your clan was betrayed,” the elder continued, his voice thick with grief. “Danzo’s ambition, and the hatred of those nations, tore Uzushio apart. Your family, your people, were reduced to ashes. This is the legacy of the Uzumaki… but how will you respond?”The images flashed before Naruto’s eyes, filling him with the raw pain of loss. His fists clenched, anger rising within him. He saw Danzo’s cold, calculating face, the armies that had invaded Uzushio. The desire for revenge stirred deep in his chest, like a fire waiting to ignite.“They destroyed everything…” Naruto muttered, his teeth gritting. “They took my family… my home…”“Would you seek vengeance?” the elder asked, stepping closer, his voice low. “Would you destroy them as they destroyed us? Would you punish those who wronged you, even if it costs you your soul?”The room darkened further, and the mists around Naruto thickened, growing oppressive. The mask on the altar began to glow faintly, and Naruto could feel it, vengeance calling to him. It whispered promises of justice, of retribution, of power. The mask pulsed with the allure of anger, the temptation to crush those who had wronged his clan.Naruto’s heart raced, torn between the fury boiling inside him and the peace he had worked so hard to find. His mind flashed to all the times he had been wronged, to the pain of isolation in his childhood, to the betrayal he had suffered at the hands of people he trusted. Part of him wanted to give in, to make them all pay. Another part of him, the part that had fought for peace, the part that believed in forgiveness, held him back.He looked at the mask, its glow intensifying, and then at the scroll, still tied, still silent.“You seek to lead, Naruto Uzumaki,” the elder said, his voice piercing through the fog of Naruto’s thoughts. “You seek to be Hokage, to carry the weight of your village. Can a leader seek vengeance? Can you lead while consumed by hate?”The elder’s words hit Naruto like a punch to the gut. He looked away from the mask, torn between the two forces pulling at him. His desire for justice, for retribution, was strong, but his will to protect, to guide others, was stronger. He thought of Sasuke, of the path of vengeance his friend had once walked, and how it had nearly destroyed him. He thought of Nagato, who had lost his way, blinded by his pain, and how Naruto had chosen to forgive him instead of hating him. He thought of Obito whose pain was twisted by Madara, yet he still helped him to see the path to forgiveness. These choices had shaped him, had brought him to where he stood now, it wasn’t easy. The anger was still there, threatening to consume him.Naruto stepped back from the altar, his eyes filled with determination. “I can’t… I won’t let vengeance control me. That’s not the kind of leader I want to be. If I give in, I’ll just be another Danzo. I’ll be repeating the cycle of hate.”The elder nodded, his expression softening. “And what of your clan’s legacy? Will you stand alone in this? Will you isolate yourself as so many of your ancestors did, bearing the burden of leadership in solitude? Or will you trust in others to stand with you?”Naruto’s breath hitched. He thought of how lonely the path of leadership could be. He had always wanted to protect everyone, to carry the weight on his own, but he wasn’t alone anymore. He had friends, comrades, people he trusted. He didn’t have to walk this path alone, but the instinct to bear it all, was still strong. The mists around him shifted, revealing another image, himself, standing alone atop Hokage Rock, looking down at Konoha. In the image, Naruto was surrounded by the shadows of his enemies, but also by the shadows of those he had pushed away in his quest for strength. The elder’s voice echoed again. “A leader who stands alone falls alone. Will you push them away, Naruto? Or will you trust them to share your burden?”Naruto clenched his fists, his heart racing as he stared at the image. He didn’t want to be alone. He didn’t want to push people away like the Uzukage who had isolated himself from his people in his final days.“I’m not alone,” Naruto said, his voice steady. “I’ve got people I can trust. I’m not gonna carry this by myself, no matter how heavy it gets.”The elder smiled faintly, his form beginning to fade. “Then you are ready.”The mask on the altar dimmed, its glow fading as Naruto made his choice. The scroll unfurled, revealing its secrets to him, secrets of his clan, of their past, of the legacy they had left for him to carry. But it wasn’t a legacy of vengeance. It was one of strength, of endurance, and of hope for a future free from the cycle of hate.As the mists around him cleared, Naruto stood taller, the weight of his choice settling over him like a mantle. He wasn’t choosing the easy path, but it was the right one.“I’ll honour the Uzumaki name,” Naruto said softly, looking at the scroll. “Not with vengeance. Not with hate, but by protecting everyone, no matter what.”The chamber brightened, and the stone door slowly creaked open, revealing Sasuke waiting on the other side. Naruto stepped forward, his heart lighter, his resolve stronger. The trial had tested him, not just his strength, but his spirit, and he had passed.Sasuke smiled at Naruto as he emerged from the room. “Dobe. I knew you could do it.”Naruto laughed and wrapped his arms around Sasuke's neck and kissed him hard on the mouth. He rested his forehead against Sasuke's. “Thanks Sasuke.”“For what?”“For believing in me. For being here with me, ya know.”“Hn. As if I’d be anywhere else, but by your side.”Together they left the lower levels of Uzushio and returned to the Uzukage tower. That evening as they sat eating their dinner, Naruto told Sasuke about the trials and what he had learnt about himself and Uzushio.“I know how to repair the seals but it will take some time before I'll be ready to do so, and I'm going to need your help.”“Dobe. Of course I’ll help. What do you need from me?”“Your sharingan mainly, as I will need you to do a scan of the seals to identify what damage is done. Also we're going to have to get Kurama to contact the other tailed beasts. According to the information I got from Uzushio, when we try to repair the seals, the shadows are going to fight back and we'll need all the help we can get.”“Okay, so you're expecting an attack while we're trying to repair the seals and you think that we'll need the assistance of nine tailed beasts to repel this attack?”“Yeah, pretty much.”“Okay, I guess we had better get organised. What supplies do we need? How long do you think it will take to get in touch with the other tailed beasts?”“I just need to study the seals and hand signs so that I know them without having to look at the scroll. Kurama says he can contact the others whenever we want. They are all connected so they can be told at any time.”“Okay. That's good. How are you feeling? From what you've told me, I imagine you've expended an enormous amount of chakra today.”“Heh, yeah. I’m pretty tired, but I'm also feeling a little wound up. Not sure if I'll be able to sleep just yet even though I'm exhausted, ya know.”“Mmm, I guess we’ll just have to wear you out.” Sasuke looked at Naruto with a sly smirk spreading on his face.Naruto huffed a laugh, “Okay, ya know you're starting to get more perverted everyday. You sure you didn't spend anytime with pervy sage?”“Not Jiraiya, no, but trust me, Orochimaru was no less perverted he just hid it better.”“Eww, please I don't need to think about him like that. He creeps me out at the best of times.”Sasuke threw his head back and laughed. Naruto looked at him in awe, he hadn't seen Sasuke laugh like this in years. He was so beautiful when he laughed and smiled like this. Sasuke stood and reached out to Naruto. Naruto took his hand and Sasuke helped him to stand. “Come on dobe. I have plans to tire you out.” He pulled a laughing Naruto into the room where their bedrolls were.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The following morning Naruto and Sasuke were eating breakfast when Sasuke looked at Naruto and said, “So you did two trials and you now have a scroll with information on how to create and repair the seals that are containing the shadows. Is that all, have you found everything that the Uzukage said he had hidden?”“Nah. I'm pretty sure there is lots more, but I’m also sure that I will have to complete more trials to gain access to them. The first trials were to make sure I would restore the seals and not completely destroy them instead.” Naruto said while looking out the window at the brilliant blue sky. There was a warm sea breeze coming in through the windows. It was so peaceful, the complete opposite of how Naruto felt.Sasuke nodded his head in acknowledgment of Naruto's response. “So what's the plan today? What do you need to do to get ready to restore the seals?”Naruto looked up in thought, as he considered what needed to be done to repair the seals. “Well, according to the scroll I first need to identify what damage has been done, how much degradation is there, how much decay from the passage of time. Also I need to see how much of original sealing scripts have faded or gone dormant. That's where I need your Sharingan, because although I can sense stuff, your eyes will see so much more.”“Okay, that sounds pretty easy. What then?”“Next I’ll need to repair any damaged scripts, which will then have to be carved into the stone, like they were before. Then I'll have to gradually channel my chakra into the seals to reawaken them. I will then need to reconstruct the pathways to restart the seal. Once that's all done I’ll need to stabilise them. I imagine that during the time I'm awakening and stabilising the seals is when the shadows will attack. I’ll need you and Kurama and the others to keep them at bay while I finish with seals.” Naruto looked worried as he said this. He started to fidget, his right leg started to bounce and he looked away from Sasuke. He felt next to useless that he would have to leave Sasuke to fight the shadows while he worked on the seals. What if they were too much for Sasuke?“Dobe. What is it? What's wrong?”“N..nothing….it's just….this isn't what you s…signed up for. These beings….. are stronger than anything we've ever fought before, and I won't be able to do anything to help.”Sasuke reached out and took Naruto's hand in his, “Dobe. I’m aware that these beings are not like anything I have ever seen before, but to be honest I'm glad I can do something to help. I was starting to feel a little redundant to be honest. I can't help you with your trials and I was worried I wouldn't be able to help with this either. This is something I can do.”Sasuke’s grip on Naruto’s hand tightened briefly, his dark eyes studying him. “Okay. So, how about we get started then. What does the scroll say about the seals? If you like, I can help you understand it.”Naruto blinked, surprised by Sasuke’s offer, but nodded. “Yeah… right. I haven’t managed to get through much of it yet. It’s packed with old Uzushio script, half of it’s gibberish to me. You know I still struggle with written stuff.”Sasuke raised an eyebrow. “Yes, I do know, but you are getting better at it all the time. With practice you'll be all over this in no time at all. You’ve always been a quick learner.”Naruto ducked his head down, his cheeks tinting pink, a small shy smile on his lips. “Heh… I don't know. Learning taijutsu and ninjutsu is a bit different to learning an entirely new language.”Sasuke frowned slightly at Naruto's go to defence of self deprecation. Every time he saw it he wanted to burn Konoha to the ground. “Luckily you’ve got me then. My Sharingan can help us decipher it. I may be able to spot patterns or symbols hidden beneath the layers of ink that we can't see with the naked eye.”Naruto perked up at that, his previous tension easing just a little. “Really! You can do that with your Sharingan? Tch, leave it to you to show off, but yeah, we could give it a shot. Uzushio techniques seem to have been designed to be ridiculously complicated.”Standing up, Naruto retrieved the scroll from the pile of belongings in the corner, carefully unrolling it on the floor between them. The script covering the scroll was unlike anything either of them had ever seen before. Elegant, intricate strokes that flowed in looping characters, some of which were faded with age. The seals still radiated energy. Naruto squinted as he tried to decipher the unfamiliar characters.“Wow. This… this is insane,” Naruto muttered, running his fingers over the faded ink. “It’s way more complicated than I thought, ya know……Okay, so this section here is supposed to explain the seals’ foundational design. It’s like… trying to piece together a jutsu from scratch.” Naruto rubbed the back of his head. “It’ll take forever if we don’t figure out some shortcuts.”Sasuke activated his Sharingan, his red eyes flickering as he leaned in to examine the scroll. “Let me see.” His gaze traced over the characters in focused silence, following the chakra patterns hidden beneath the ink, eyes narrowing. “The seals are still dormant.” Sasuke noted, “but they’re fragile. One wrong move and this could unravel. There’s more here than you can see with the naked eye.”Naruto leaned closer. “What do you mean?”“See here?” Sasuke pointed to one of the faded lines. “The ink’s deteriorated, but the original design is still faintly visible, like chakra residue. I can pick up the flow of how it used to be written.”Naruto’s eyes widened. “You can see that?”Sasuke smirked. “Told you I’d be useful.”Naruto chuckled. “Alright, alright, you’ve got my attention.” He nodded, feeling the weight of Sasuke’s words. “We need to figure out how these symbols connect. There are pathways leading from one seal to another, almost like a network, but they’re broken. I think I need to restore these connections before I can channel chakra into them. What else can you see?”Sasuke’s eyes followed the flowing script. “There’s more to this,” he said, narrowing his gaze. “These symbols aren’t just seals—they’re formulas, layered on top of one another. Here,” he pointed to a cluster of symbols near the centre, “this part is degrading, but I can see remnants of a counter seal embedded beneath it. If we can reconstruct that, it should help stabilise the entire network.”Naruto bit his lip in concentration. “Okay. I see it now. So, I guess what you’re saying is we repair this part first, and that should buy us time to deal with the larger seals?”“Exactly,” Sasuke replied. “I’ll help you transcribe the missing parts and make sure the script is precise.”Naruto grabbed a nearby brush and carefully started tracing the faded symbols onto a blank piece of parchment. Sasuke watched Naruto's progress carefully with his Sharingan, correcting Naruto when the lines wavered or when a symbol was slightly out of place. The script had to be perfect, any flaw could lead to a catastrophic failure when they reawakened the seals. As they worked, Naruto would occasionally glance at Sasuke, feeling a renewed sense of confidence. The task ahead was more dangerous than anything they’d faced, but with Sasuke beside him, cool headed, brilliant, and unyielding, Naruto knew they stood a real chance. As the morning stretched into afternoon, they continued to analyse every inch of the scroll. Naruto could feel the ancient power thrumming beneath the surface of the paper, a power that had been dormant for generations. It took Naruto two days, with Sasuke's help, to restore the seals to their original condition. Now he had to go to where they were inscribed on walks of the chamber under Uzushio to carve them into the stone. Before he could do that though he needed the tailed beasts.Naruto and Sasuke had returned to the training ground they found on their first day in Uzushio. Naruto sat down, feeling the weight of responsibility on his shoulders. The seals had been restored, but the real challenge was yet to come. The thought of releasing the tailed beasts into battle again made his stomach knot. Would this work, or were they risking everything? They sat in the centre of the ground facing each other. Sasuke reached out and took Naruto's hand in his. “You ready?” His lips pressed tightly together and his brow furrowed slightly.Naruto took a deep breath, his heart picking up slightly, “Yeah, as ready as I’ll ever be, ya know. Let's do this.”Sasuke activated his Sharingan and looked into Naruto's eyes. Immediately he was in the shared space in Naruto's mind, looking at nine tailed beasts siting in a circle around them. There was a lot of noise as the beasts chatted amongst themselves.Kurama was laying with his head on his paws, eyes closed, trying to look disinterested and annoyed, but his ears kept flicking back and forth as he obviously listened to the excited chattering of his brethren.Shukaku was loudly bragging about some recent altercation he had while Gyūki poked fun at him, using Killer B’s annoying rap style of talking.Chōmei was flittering around the space weaving in and out of the spaces between each beast giggling and annoying the others acting like a young child instead of a centuries old being.Saiken and Kokuō were having a quiet discussion, although Sasuke couldn't hear what it was about. Isobu sat quietly watching everyone. Matatabi and Son Gokū were also having a discussion which seemed to be about whose fighting style was the best.Naruto was grinning maniacally. He truly loved all theses fierce, enigmatic creatures, that for generations had been feared. He raced around the space enthusiastically greeting each one, fist bumping them and regaling them with exaggerated tales of their time in Uzushio.Eventually Kurama spoke up, “Kit… Naruto … …..NARUTO!!!” He roared. The space fell silent. Naruto had leapt into the air in shock. He spun around ready to tell Kurama off. Kurama huffed and nudged him with his snout. “There's a reason you called all of us here. Yes? Don't you think that maybe it's time to tell everyone what's happening and what you need?”Naruto's face went red and he scratched the back of his neck sheepishly. “Y..yeah. I guess so. Although you didn't need to yell at me like that, ya know.”Sasuke and the other tailed beasts snickered. Naruto whirled around with his arms crossed tightly across his chest, glaring at them. Sasuke walked over to Naruto and took his hand, smirking, “Dobe. Kurama did try to get your attention, but you must admit that when you're excited, it's almost impossible to get your attention quietly.”“Hmph. Fine….Okay, I had Kurama call you all here because I… we need your help. I'm not sure how much the Sage told you about the responsibility he bestowed upon the Uzumaki clan, or about the corrupted chakra beings they were containing.”There was quiet chattering around the room as the beasts talked amongst themselves about their early days. Matatabi spoke up, her voice almost a purr, “ We do know what you're talking about, Naruto. Can you tell us what has happened that you need our help with?”“Cool. Yeah….okay. So when Uzushio was destroyed, it wasn't just from overwhelming odds. Danzo had damaged the seals containing the beings, he thought he could use their power to put Konoha on top. So when Uzushio was attacked they were already weakened from inside the village as well. They were fighting two different battles.” Naruto took a deep breath to calm himself and reorder his thoughts. As Naruto explained the plan, Sasuke watched him carefully. This wasn’t the first time they’d faced impossible odds together, but the stakes felt different now. It wasn't just their own lives on the line. They were dealing with ancient forces, and for once, Naruto wouldn’t be the one doing the fighting. Sasuke squeezed his hand, silently promising that he’d hold up his end.Naruto squeezed Sasuke's hand in acknowledgment of his support and continued, “Now we need to repair and restore the seals before they degrade completely and release the beings. Sasuke and I have been working with the seals to repair them, now they need to be placed and reactivated. We believe that the beings will attack during this time. From what we can decipher, they will be too much for just Sasuke and Kurama to control….I won't be able to stop with the seals until they're complete.”“If those seals break completely,” Sasuke said, his voice grim, “it’s not just Uzushio at risk. The entire world could be plunged into chaos.”Naruto nodded, his eyes narrowing. “Which is why we can’t afford to lose.”The assembled beasts looked at Kurama who just nodded in confirmation. Gyūki spoke up, “ It's all well and good to offer help, but how can we help from in here? If Naruto can't fight while placing seals, just lending him our chakra won't do anything. Also we can't inhabit Uchiha’s body, strong as he is, his body won't survive the strain.”Sasuke stepped forward, “We’ve found a jutsu, created by the Uzumaki, called Bijū Tōei no Jutsu ( Tailed Beast Projection Technique), that will allow you all to be outside Naruto's body, without risking his life, and be able to fight. It relies on your own chakra reserves, not Naruto's, but you’ll be tethered to him, similar to the way the puppeteers in Suna tether their puppets.”“Kurama, have you looked at this jutsu?” Kokuō asked.“Yes I have. The only limitations I can see are, if we start to get low on chakra, we will need to retreat back into Naruto, which if we all go at once, will leave both Naruto and Uchiha vulnerable. Also, Naruto will have to maintain his concentration not only on the seals he is repairing, but on the tether as well. If his concentration breaks we will be returned to his body.”“Okay, so we will need to communicate well and watch our chakra levels, maybe we can swap in and out?” Saiken suggested.“No, unfortunately Naruto would be needed to manifest you outside his body again, and he wouldn't be able to do that while working on the seal.” Kurama said“Okay, so we'll just have to make sure we don't lose sight of how much chakra we're using. I know it's been a long time since we had to do that, but it's not like any of us are new to this either.” Isobu remarked.“True.” Kurama replied.“This better work, or I’ll be making sandstorms for weeks!” Shukaku barked, clearly agitated, tail flicking back and forth. “We don’t have time for mistakes, Uzumaki!”“I believe in you, Naruto,” Matatabi said her voice soft but confident, a calm contrast to Shukaku’s impatience. “We’ve seen you do the impossible before.”Naruto nodded thanks to Matatabi’s support. “Okay. So are you all okay with this. You don’t have to do this,” Naruto said, his voice quieter now. “I don’t want to put you all in danger. You’ve all been through enough as it is, ya know.”Kurama huffed giving Naruto a knowing look, “Kit, stop that. We’re not doing this for you, we're doing this with you. There’s a difference. You know we're all willing to help you.” All the beasts voiced their agreement. “We know it's not going to be easy, we might not die, but there is still a risk for us even if it is much lower. If we don't fix this problem those beings will cause us problems as well. So when do you want to do this?”“We're ready to go now if that's okay with you guys.” Naruto stated, rocking back on his heals and wringing his hands.Kurama nodded, “Alright, where do you pair want to perform the jutsu? Here or closer to where we will be needed?”“I think we should perform it here. One I would like you all to get a bit of an understanding of the layout of the village. Two I think if we try it too close to the seals, it might cause the beings to attack before we've even started restoring the seals and that might cause everything to fail.” Sasuke replied, “What do you think, Naruto?”Naruto's eyes darted to Sasuke, as if in surprise that he would ask for his input. Sasuke frowned at the look, and had to work hard not to lash out. Instead he just raised an eyebrow and waited for Naruto's response.“Y..y..yeah. That s..sounds like a good idea.”Kurama tilted his head at Naruto's changed demeanour, looked at Sasuke who returned his look, then asked. “Have you got everything you require here to perform the jutsu, or do we need to go back to the Uzukage tower?”Naruto turned to Kurama and said, “No we don't need to return, we have everything we need here. As long as everyone is ready we can start. I’ll just need to leave this space.”The tailed beasts all nodded their agreement. With that Sasuke deactivated his Sharingan and left Naruto's head space and waited for Naruto to return to the forefront of his mind.“Ready? Do you need to study the scroll again?” Sasuke asked as he stood up and stretched his legs.“No. I'm pretty sure I’ve got sorted. It's not a lot different to the tailed beast mode I used during the war.”“Hn. Sure Naruto. This would be considered a forbidden jutsu for most people. Just the level of chakra you need initially is enough to incapacitate most others. Please be careful, okay.”“Y..yeah okay, I’m sorry I get it. Alright let’s do this.”Naruto took a deep breath, let it out and formed the Ox hand sign to stabilise his chakra, then he formed the Boar hand sign to start channeling the massive amount of chakra he needed for this jutsu, and so he could start drawing on the tailed beasts chakra. As Sasuke watched an aura began to manifest around Naruto, a faint golden glow around him, similar to his Nine Tails Chakra Mode. His pupils shifted into slits, as he prepared for the flow of tailed beast chakra. His hair started to lift slightly, as though there was wind blowing through it. The air around Naruto started to take on a denser feel. Sasuke could see the faint outline of the tails of Kurama’s chakra cloak behind Naruto, though it didn't fully form.Naruto followed with the Dragon sign to start synchronising with each tailed beast, focusing on harmonising his chakra with theirs. While he held the Dragon sign, he mentally reached out to each of the tailed beasts to connect their chakra pathways to his. Once he established that he performed the Tiger sign to began channeling their chakra externally. He needed to do this to ensure his chakra was properly synchronised with the tailed beasts’, creating a safe flow of energy, and setting the stage for them to manifest physically.Sasuke watched in awe as Naruto's appearance continued to change with each step. His chakra cloak began glowing brighter and beginning to look more like the Nine Tails Chakra Mode. Except the cloak pulsed with multiple colors, each representing a different tailed beast, green, white, brown, red and grey mixed with the golden. The chakra tails swayed behind him. Instead of the nine foxlike tails he had when using Kurama’s chakra, there now appeared to be abstract shapes, hinting at the collective presence of all the tailed beasts.Sasuke also noticed that Naruto’s eyes glowed more intensely, flickering between slit pupils and the unique eyes of the other tailed beasts. His whisker marks had darkened and thickened slightly as well. Sasuke was always impressed at how good Naruto looked in Nine Tails Chakra Mode, but this was even more impressive.Naruto then formed the Monkey sign to stabilise the chakra projections, making sure that each tailed beast’s avatar formed properly. Naruto refined the tailed beasts’ chakra so that he could control it better to solidify their forms. Once he had control he performed the Dog sign to initiate the summoning like process that would allow the tailed beasts to manifest as chakra avatars outside of his body.As Naruto projected the chakra avatars of the tailed beasts outward, his appearance become a reflection of the tailed beasts’ collective power. His chakra cloak expanded further, with the individual chakra signatures of each tailed beast taking more prominent forms within it. The energy was no longer just swirling colors but began to show tangible shapes. His cloak had the appearance of sand in texture and then shifted to a coral like texture, his tails were blue flames, red lava and golden fox, he appeared to sometimes have transparent green wings or terracotta coloured tentacles, bubbles appeared around him and he occasionally looked like he had horns. It was magnificent to look at as the intensity of the light surrounding Naruto reached new levels. The energy radiating from him caused distortions in the air around him because of the sheer pressure and power of the chakra being released. As the avatars began to form, Naruto formed the Ram sign to create the chakra tethers that would link him to the manifested tailed beasts. He needed to get this right to ensure the projection could be maintained safely and allow the tailed beasts to fight alongside him.As he completed the jutsu, Naruto’s chakra cloak stabilised into a majestic form. Each beast was now projected externally, but Naruto retained a powerful aura, glowing golden and looking regal, with the aura of all the beasts still subtly flickering around him. There were faint, glowing chakra tendrils that could be seen extending from Naruto’s body to the massive, avatars of the tailed beasts. Naruto’s eyes had taken on a fusion of all the tailed beasts’ colours. There was a swirling pattern in his irises. His whisker marks had extended across his face. He looked amazing, confident and grounded, fully at one with the massive power he was controlling. This was no longer just Naruto, the shinobi they all knew. He was something far more, an embodiment of the ancient, powerful forces of nature, a link between man and beast, and the anchor of a new hope for the world.Sasuke stood, lost for words as he looked at Naruto's new form. He walked over and reached out tentatively to touch Naruto's face. “Amazing.” He breathed, his Sharingan activating automatically “Dobe…” Sasuke muttered under his breath, his usual nickname for Naruto carrying a weight of pride and admiration. He couldn’t help but smirk slightly, but beneath that smirk was a deep respect.Naruto, breathing deeply but steadily, glanced at Sasuke, and a small grin broke through his composed face. “Heh… It worked,” he said quietly, his voice a little strained but full of relief. The overwhelming pressure in the air settled slightly, and Sasuke could feel the ground beneath him relax as the energy became more controlled.“Heh, need to remember this, huh?” Naruto teased.“Yeah. You need to see this, so when this is all over, I’ll show you what I see. Magnificent, dobe.”The tailed beasts, now manifested in full chakra avatars, stood behind Naruto. Their immense forms loomed over the training ground, each one a unique representation of elemental and spiritual power.Shukaku a massive tanuki with tan colouring and dark blue markings that spiraled around its entire form. A large, jagged mouth lined with sharp fangs, and eyes that were yellow with dark sclera, giving it a fierce and wild expression. One long tail that resembles a sandy whirlwind.Matatabi, a massive, flaming blue cat with two long tails. Its eyes glowed a deep yellow with slit pupils, and it had sharp, cat like features, including prominent whiskers and clawed paws.Isobu an enormous turtle like creature with a rugged, spiked shell covered in coral like growths. Three large, jagged tails that resembled fins, and its skin was a dark gray with a rough, rocky texture. Its eyes were small, red, and round, giving it a piercing gaze.Son Gokū a massive ape with red fur and four long tails. It resembled a mix between a gorilla and an orangutan, a broad chest, powerful arms, and large fangs jutting from its lower jaw, and green eyes that burn with fierce intelligence.Kokuō a massive white, horse like creature with five tails. Its body was sleek and muscular, with a sharp, pointed horn atop its head that resembled a whale’s. Its eyes were blue, and its tails shimmered with a pale, ethereal glow, giving the impression of a phantom steed.Saiken a gigantic, white, slug like creature covered in a thick, gelatinous layer of slime. With six long, slimy tails that undulated like tentacles, and its body secreted a constantly oozing mucus that gave it a slimy, glistening appearance.Chōmei a giant rhinoceros beetle, with a metallic green, armored exoskeleton and seven long tails that resembled insect wings.Gyūki an enormous, muscular creature resembling an ox with eight long tentacles that sprouted from its back like an octopus. Its skin was dark brown and its face was a mixture of an ox and a squid, with large, prominent horns and a pair of piercing eyes that glowed red.Kurama a colossal, fox like creature with deep orange fur and nine long, bushy tails. Its eyes glowed an intense red with slit pupils, and its fanged maw was filled with sharp teeth.Kurama glanced at Naruto, and there was something in his gaze, pride, maybe, or a sense of companionship that had taken years to build.“Well done, Kit,” Kurama said, his voice rumbling like thunder, though it was laced with approval.Naruto nodded, wiping a bead of sweat from his brow. “Thanks, Kurama… Thanks, everyone.”The other tailed beasts made their own sounds of approval, their willingness to stand with Naruto apparent. They understood the gravity of the situation and the stakes involved. Even the volatile Shukaku, despite his bluster, was ready for what lay ahead.Sasuke approached Naruto, crossing his arms, his tone businesslike despite the wonder he had just witnessed. “You’ve outdone yourself again, Naruto. But this is just the beginning. The real fight starts now.”Naruto nodded, the seriousness returning to his expression. “Yeah, I know… But with everyone’s help, we’ll get it done.”Sasuke glanced over at the massive chakra avatars surrounding them. The sight was something no one else in the world could claim to have ever seen, Naruto had achieved a connection that no one, not even the Sage of Six Paths, had maintained in quite the same way. It was as if Naruto had become the true bridge between humans and the tailed beasts, not just their jailor but their partner. With that thought, Sasuke’s Sharingan flared, a determined look in his eyes. “Let’s move out.”As the duo turned to leave the training ground, the tailed beasts shifted, their immense chakra forms shimmering, ready to be called into battle. The winds had stilled for a brief moment, but Sasuke could feel it, a storm was coming. And Naruto, the Tailed Beasts, and Sasuke were ready to face it together.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The group moved through the empty passage ways under Uzushio, heading towards the chamber that held the damaged seals. The only Tailed Beast that had ever seen Uzushio, was Kurama. The others were awed at how good the village looked after being destroyed by war and empty for decades. Naruto, Sasuke and Kurama explained what the last Uzukage had done, to ensure that no bodies would be found. How he had hidden everything of value deep within the village until a descendant arrived, and managed to pass a series of tests to be able to access the artefacts and others items and knowledge hidden away. When the group arrived at the chamber, they stopped just outside. Naruto turned and faced the Tailed Beasts, who were now much smaller than when he had completed the jutsu. On their way here, the Tailed Beasts had experimented with their forms, and found that they could adjust their size to fit their circumstances. In fact they were fairly certain that they could do all the jutsu they knew. There didn't seem to be any limitations to what they could do, but they would need to be careful. Jutsu like Tailed Beast Ball used an immense amount of chakra, and if they exhausted their chakra, they would disappear back into Naruto.“Okay, on the far wall of the chamber are the containment seals for the chakra beings. There are twelve beings and there are thirteen seals per being that need to be restored. I’m going to create eleven shadow clones, so that all the seals can be restored at the same time. When I start carving the seals into the wall, that's when we're expecting the beings to attack.”“How long do you think it will take to restore the seals, Naruto?” Saiken asked.“If everything goes well, the scroll estimated between five and seven hours.” Sasuke answered, he folded his arms across his chest and looked over his shoulder at the seals, “Unfortunately, we're not expecting ideal conditions, so probably closer to between ten and twelve hours.”“Yeah, I know that’s a long time, but hopefully once the containment seals are completed, the beings won't be able to interfere and the rest of the seals will just take time for precisions sake, ya know.” Naruto said as he formed the seals for the shadow clone jutsu. Eleven more Narutos were now in the room. “Alright, you all know what to do. Time to start restoring those seals.” With that the eleven clones and the real Naruto moved into the chamber and each one headed to a seal. This was the most vital part of the sealing process, as these seals were the ones actually keeping the beings contained. As soon as Naruto and his clones started working on the Primary Containment Seals the air in the chamber shifted, growing heavy with malice. The glow from the seals flickered, dimming as a cold, dark energy began to seep into the room. From the shadows, forms began to materialise, twisted, shifting figures with glowing red eyes and bodies made of writhing darkness.Sasuke entered the chamber readying himself to fight, “Naruto, they’re here! Keep going we have this.”One of the shadowy beings lunged forward, its form shifting like smoke as it attacked. Sasuke activated his Rinnegan, dodging the strike with precision and launching a counter attack with his Chidori. The electricity sparked across the creature’s form, but it merely flickered and reformed, unaffected.“Damn it! I was hoping Chidori would be effective.” Sasuke growled.More shadows surged forward, surrounding him. Sasuke leapt back, forming the hand seals for a Blaze Sword Fire Possession jutsu, but when he swung his sword into one of the shadows, it passed through, barely affecting the creature.Sweat beaded on Naruto’s brow, dripping into his eyes, causing his vision to blur, as he forced himself to ignore what was happening around him and concentrate on restoring the seals and maintaining the tethers to the chakra avatars. He quickly swiped at his eyes without pausing. Behind him, a familiar voice rumbled with urgency. “Uchiha, I need you to back up and stay near Naruto. Your normal jutsu won't work on these beings you’ll be better suited to keeping them away from Naruto and his clones by using your Susanoo.” Kurama’s avatar flared with his words. “The other Tailed Beasts and I… we were created to keep the balance just like the Uzumaki clan. Let us help.”Sasuke nodded, his Rinnegan glowing as he prepared to summon his Susanoo. “Okay, Kurama. I’ll leave it up to you and the others. Let’s end this.”As Sasuke prepared to cover Naruto and his clones, the avatars of the Tailed Beasts surged through the air. Kurama, Shukaku, Matatabi, and the other beasts, their combined energy crackling around the chamber like lightning. Naruto’s new form surging and glowing in response to the attacks of all nine Tailed Beasts. The shadows hissed, sensing the overwhelming power. They attacked in unison, their forms twisting and growing more vicious, throwing chakra blades and scythes made of wind at Naruto. Sasuke blocked the attacks on Naruto with his Susanoo, but Naruto ignored their presence and continued to work on the seals. Sasuke stood his ground sheltering Naruto and his clones from them.Naruto ground his teeth in frustration. He had never felt so useless in his life. He should be helping fight these creatures., not just carving symbols into stone. Sasuke's words broke through his thoughts, “Dobe. Don't lose focus. Everything is hinging on you restoring these seals. Stop overthinking the situation. You are doing the most crucial work here. I know you're more used to punching and talking your way through situations, but you are the only Uzumaki who can do this.”Naruto shook his head as he returned his full focus to the seals. He huffed a small laugh at how easily Sasuke read him, even when he was fighting. With a roar, Kurama stood before his brethren, together The Tailed Beasts unleashed a massive coordinated wave of chakra, combining all their power into a massive Rasenshuriken. Kurama held the spinning orb of destruction aloft. It glowed with every element, it's form reflecting all of the Tailed Beasts affinities, its power enough to tear through the shadows.Sasuke launched a series of lightning-fast attacks with his Susanoo, his sword cleaving through the shadowy forms. But each time he destroyed one, another seemed to rise from the darkness.Kurama called out to Sasuke, “Uchiha, they aren’t just beings of chakra. They are the embodiment of chaos itself. We can’t just destroy them, they have to be sealed away, just like the ancient Uzumaki did.”Naruto focused his chakra. He and his clones had been at this for over two hours now. They almost had the Primary containment seals restored. He hoped that once they got the final inscriptions in place the beings would be sealed and the others could relax a bit. They just needed to hold for a few more minutes.Kurama called out again “Uchiha, we need a barrier so that we can hold them in place until the seal is ready, do you think you can create one?”Sasuke didn’t hesitate. “Yeah. Got it. Let’s do this.”As Sasuke created a massive barrier with his Rinnegan, encasing the entire chamber in an impenetrable dome of chakra, Naruto finalised the scripts for the Primary Containment Seal. With Sasuke and The Tailed Beasts holding the beings in place, Naruto pushed his chakra into the seal, activating it. The ground beneath them erupted with glowing, golden chains of chakra, snaking through the chamber and wrapping around the shadowy beings. The creatures writhed and hissed, trying to escape, but the seals tightened, drawing them into a vortex of energy. With one final surge of power, Naruto slammed his hands together, completing the seal. The shadows screamed as they were pulled into the vortex, their forms dissolving into nothingness. The room fell silent. Naruto breathed out in relief, but kept going with the seals. He now needed to place the stabilisation seals to make sure the creatures did not break back out immediately. This would take him about an hour to complete.Behind him Sasuke and The Tailed Beasts stood on guard waiting to see if he would be successful. Sasuke came up behind Naruto to check on him, “How are you holding out, Naruto? What are your chakra levels like? Please don't downplay your exhaustion either.”Naruto huffed a laugh at Sasuke again reading him too well. “I’m okay at the moment, but I think that after I place the stabilisation seals, I might need an infusion of chakra so I can keep going with the rest of the seals required.”Matatabi spoke up, “That shouldn't be an issue, Naruto. I'm pretty sure that in this form we'll be able to feed you constantly with draining ourselves. What do you think, Kurama?”“Mmm, yes I think Matatabi is correct, there should be no issue giving you some of our chakra through the tethers. How is everyone's chakra levels after that fight? What about you, Uchiha, do you need an infusion?”Sasuke stood in shock of the offer from Kurama, “I’m okay at this point, maybe if we need to fight again I might need an infusion. Thank you for the offer.” He said solemnly, bowing his head in deference.Kurama inclined his head in acknowledgment of Sasuke's thanks. He then turned to watch Naruto place the stabilisation seals.Once Naruto had the stabilisation seals in place he was able to take a small break to rest. He then returned to the seals to place the pathway seals. These seals were more complex than the stabilisation seals, as they would act as “pathways” between the containment units, and prevent the beings from being able to influence or strengthen each other. They would also manage the chakra flow across the sealing system. He would need about three hours to complete these seals. When Naruto had completed the pathway seals, he took another short break to rest and receive some chakra. He would now move onto the Guardian seals. These seals were designed to trigger defensive measures or alerts if any part of the system failed. They would be linked the vortexes that protect Uzushio, to provide a final line of defense. These seals would take Naruto another two hours or so to place. The next seals Naruto needed to place were Reinforcement Seals. These seals were to help with any repairs that might be needed to the system due to degradation over time. These seals would allow for easy repair or boosting of the system without having to fully overhaul it. These could also act as backups. These seals would also take around two or three hours to complete.Naruto had been working on the seals for around eleven hours when he finally placed the last inscription. He sighed in relief and stood slowly, allowing himself time to regain full blood flow to cramping muscles. He stretched his back and rolled his neck to relieve his discomfort from being in the same position for so long.He turned to face Sasuke and the Tailed Beasts. “Thank you everyone, for helping with the beings and helping me with chakra. I just need to test the system to make sure everything is placed correctly. So I’m sorry but I'm still going to need your help for a bit longer.”Saiken looked at Naruto with fondness, “ Stop apologising, Naruto. We all understood that this was not a quick fix, we all agreed to do what was necessary. Thank you for being you though, it's nice to have someone treat us as though our feelings and opinions matter.”Naruto's faced reddened and he scratched the back of his neck while a small shy smile crept across his face. Sasuke smirked at his reaction, and Naruto glared at him when he noticed.“Dobe. How much time do you think it will take to test the system?”“Hopefully, if all goes well and hour.”“Do you need anything? More chakra, anything?” Kokuō asked.“Nah, I'm pretty good at the moment, thank you, but once I’m done here, I think I might sleep for a week.” Naruto chuckled. He then turned to the seals to complete the testing.Breathing heavily, Naruto collapsed to one knee, the testing phase successfully completed . “We did it… we sealed them.” He released his clones and they all disappeared.Sasuke stood beside him, his Sharingan slowly fading. “I knew you could do it, Naruto. Once again you showed just how unpredictable you can be. When you set your mind to something, you don't give up until it's done.” He leaned forward a kissed Naruto on the cheek. His lips tingled from the power radiating from Naruto who was still in his new form.Naruto ducked his head, pleased but shy. He looked up at the Nine Tailed Beasts, still in the avatars and still tethered to him, “Thank you so much, I would love to be able to keep you out here longer, but I'm about to collapse from exhaustion, so I will have to release the tethers.”The beasts all nodded in understanding, as their avatars faded away. In his head he could hear them all saying their goodbyes in their own ways. Kurama rumbled in his head, “Well done Kit. Rest, you’ve earned it. I'm going to rest now too.” His voice faded as he retreated to the back of Naruto's mind. Naruto's new form faded with the release of the tethers. As they stood in the aftermath of the battle, Naruto couldn’t help but feel the weight of his clan’s legacy on his shoulders. The Uzumaki had been entrusted with protecting the world from the shadows, and now that responsibility fell to him.But this time, he wasn’t alone.Naruto sagged in exhaustion, his knees buckling under him. Sasuke leapt forward catching Naruto under the arms stopping him from face planting.“Come on Dobe. Let’s get you to bed.” With that Sasuke started making his way out of the chamber, back to the Uzukage tower while assisting Naruto to do the same.Once they returned to the tower, Naruto collapsed onto their bedrolls and was immediately asleep. Sasuke chuckled, at went about removing Naruto's shoes, weapon pouches and other items so that Naruto could rest comfortably and undisturbed. Once he was certain that Naruto was comfortable, he got himself ready to sleep. He knew they would need food soon, but at the moment, sleep was more important. He lay down next to Naruto and was asleep just as quickly.Naruto slept for a solid day and a half after he restored the seals. During that time Sasuke experimented with his summons and found he could summon Garuda to Uzushio with no problems. He sent Garuda to get some more supplies for them, as they were starting to run low, and spent the rest of the time studying the scroll that Naruto had received when he successfully completed the first two trials. When Naruto awoke, he stretched, his muscles sore from being in the same position for so long. He felt a dull throbbing ache in his shoulders, a reminder of the immense chakra he’d used to restore the seals. The weight in his chest, that feeling of expectation, was heavier though. This was about more than just physical exhaustion, it was about legacy he hadn’t even known existed until recently. Am I really the one to carry all this?Sasuke cooked Naruto a big meal, and had even got Garuda to bring Naruto's favourite ramen from Ichiraku. Naruto's eyes sparkled when he saw the ramen. “H..how….did you manage to get Ichiraku ramen?”“Summoned Garuda and he got supplies for me and I asked him to get the ramen as well. It's not a big deal.” Sasuke replied, his cheeks pinking slightly.“Uh huh, sure. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Sasuke. So does that mean our summons can get in? That's awesome. By the way, how long was I out for?”“Around 36 hours, give or take. How do you feel? Any lingering effects from the sealing?”“Not really, just a bit stiff, but that might be from the way I slept. Have there been any issues?”“No, it's been very quiet. I’ve spent the time studying the scroll, seeing if I could find any hints about the remaining trials and how many there may be.”Naruto looked up at Sasuke his eyes widening slightly, “And….did you find out anything?”“Yes actually. I believe the two trials you have completed were, The Trial of Seals and The Trial of Memory and Legacy. From what I can decipher, there are four more trials. They are, The Trial of Resilience, The Trial of Chakra Harmony, The Trial of Sacrifice and The Trial of Legacy. Other than what the trials are called, there is no clues, that I can find, that indicate what each trial might involve.”Naruto stared at his hands, rubbing them together absentmindedly. His fingers curled into his palms, and he felt the callouses from years of training. This was different. He wasn’t sure if all the training in the world could prepare him for this. As he sat there absorbing what Sasuke had just told him. Four more trials, great. Uzushio definitely wasn't going to go easy on him, was she. He sat there thinking about whether he wanted to do the trials or not, when Sasuke's voice broke in, “Naruto. What are you thinking about. Can you share?”“Um….yeah… was just…thinking about how hard everything has been so far….and….do I really want to do more…. mean… don't know what to do….what's expected of me….. I don’t know, Sasuke,” he said, his voice quieter than usual. “I’ve never really backed down from a challenge before, but this… it’s not just about me. If I mess up, if I bring this stuff back into the world, and it goes wrong… what if it causes another war? What if it’s like… the Nine Tails all over again? I don’t want to be responsible for something like that.”“You don't have to do anything. Naruto, nothing is expected of you. It's your choice, if you don't want to do the remaining trials, that's okay. Who's going to know, or care. What does anyone else's opinion even matter. No one knows about them anyway, except you and me. I won't think less of you if you chose not to do them. You've done so much already. Really it's up to you. I will be here, whatever you chose to do.”Naruto looked down at his hands, still wringing them while he wrestled with his thoughts. “I ….don't know, Sasuke.” He said letting out a long breath. “On one hand I feel like if I don't do these trials, I’m letting down the Uzumaki Clan. It’s like they left all this behind for a reason, right? And if I’m the last one, doesn’t that make it my job to see it through? But…” He shook his head, biting his lip. “But…on the other, I think maybe it's better to leave everything else hidden, ya know. This stuff was what Danzo, Kiri, Kumo and Iwa were after. If I bring it back into the world, the same might happen again. Do I even have the right to decide that?”Sasuke reached out and took Naruto's hand in his, “It's not a decision you need to make anytime soon, Naruto. You’ve sealed the corrupted chakra beings up and we know how to look after that and maintain it, that was the most urgent task. Everything else is just icing on top. You don't ever have to access that information if you don't want to. For now let’s just rest and recuperate and maybe do a bit more exploring. What do you think?”Naruto looked at Sasuke and smiled a small smile, “Yeah, that sounds good. It would be nice to just look around and see if we can figure out what each building was and what Uzushio might have looked like. Thanks Sasuke.” Naruto said, his smile small but genuine. “We’ll explore a bit, take it easy for now.” He stretched again, his joints popping, but his mind didn’t feel any lighter. Even as he said the words, something in him itched, like an unfinished mission hanging over his head.Sasuke nodded in response to Naruto's thanks and they continued to eat their meal. After their meal they decided to explore more of Uzushio. The trials could wait a while, Sasuke was right, ther was no rush. He glanced back at the tower as they headed off. Just wait a little longer, he thought. I’ll figure this out. They wandered through the streets of Uzushio, the air now carrying a faint tang of salt from the nearby sea. Different to when they first arrived, before Naruto had awoken Uzushio. There were now noises, seabirds calling out, waves crashing against the docks, the wind moving through the trees. There were also smells, salt, plants, moss, wet stone. The buildings were all made of stone. Naruto ran his hand along the mosaic covered walls. “Where do you think they got the stone to build, it's not like the island is big enough that they would've had a quarry.”“Hn. You're right.” Sasuke activated his Sharingan to take a closer look at the stone used. “It looks like they may have had Shinobi that could use a type of Earth Release, maybe someone like Yamato sensei who could modify their jutsu to build structures instead of just walls. Maybe it was an Uzumaki technique, who knows, but it definitely appears to have been created by jutsu as opposed to quarried stone.”Naruto looked around the village in awe. It was even more amazing if you thought about the buildings being built by Shinobi using Earth techniques. Every building was covered in mosaics, the colours were faded by decades of exposure to weather conditions, but stil beautiful. Here and there, they could make out what might have been houses, shops, docks, warehouses.“I wonder what it was like when people lived here,” Naruto said softly, his voice almost drowned out by the wind. He could imagine it, the streets full of people, laughter, and shouts, the hum of seals being crafted and tested. “It feels like I missed out on so much, ya know? I know I probably wouldn't have lived here, with dad being Hokage, but I would've had family here. We probably would've visited a lot.” His fingers brushed against a stone wall, the last mark of a clan long gone.Sasuke glanced at him, sensing the melancholy in his tone. “It wasn’t your fault,” he said. “Your mother was only a child when all of this happened.”Naruto nodded, but the guilt still gnawed at him. Even if it wasn’t his fault, it didn’t change the fact that he was the only one left to carry on what they’d started.“You know, it wouldn't take that much work to rebuild Uzushio. Thanks to the last Uzukage, there is very little damage from the war. Most of the damage is just neglect. I'm sure the Tailed Beasts would help, and I bet that there would be Shinobi willing to assist as well. Also I think if you got in contact with Tazuna and Inari they would be here in a heartbeat to help you rebuild here.” Sasuke said, while walking along the dock.Naruto stopped in his tracks, his mouth open, eyes wide, staring at Sasuke like he’d just suggested tearing down Konoha itself. “Wh..what a..about Konoha?”“What about it? Didn't you say to me before we left Konoha, that you weren't even sure if you wanted to be Hokage any more? What about Uzukage, would that suit better?”“Are you serious right now? Leave Konoha?” His voice wavered, caught between disbelief and the sudden weight of what rebuilding Uzushio might mean for his future.Sasuke turned and looked Naruto in the eye, “I most certainly am suggesting exactly that. You know I have no love for Konoha, and after what we have discovered here. Those Elders knew exactly what Danzo was doing, just like they knew about the Uchiha. Don’t tell me they didn’t. This village… it was another casualty of their greed. Why would we keep serving them?.”Naruto clenched his fists, staring out at the vast, open sea. Sasuke’s words hung heavy between them, and for the first time, he wondered if maybe, just maybe, his future didn’t have to be tied to Konoha. Uzushio called to him, its forgotten streets whispering a path that was his alone to walk.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Naruto and Sasuke spent the next few days exploring Uzushio. Sasuke didn't bring up their conversation at the docks again, and Naruto didn't either, but he kept turning it over in his head. As they walked past the faded mosaics, Naruto couldn’t shake the thought that Uzushio could be something extraordinary again, but what about everyone back home? Could he really turn his back on Konoha? The memories surfaced, Kakashi’s quiet encouragement, Sakura’s fierce support, Ichiraku’s comforting bowls of ramen. And yet… Uzushio was his blood, his family’s legacy. Would leaving mean betraying that heritage? He glanced at Sasuke, wondering if his friend saw the same possibilities here or something entirely different.Sasuke could see the tension in Naruto’s face. Naruto was definitely overthinking things. He knew that Naruto needed time to work out what he wanted and how he felt about Sasuke's suggestion, as well as if he wanted to complete all the remaining trials. He would give Naruto all the time he needed, it was the least he could do, considering all that Naruto had done for him. They had managed to map out a good third of Uzushio by now, and they had a pretty good idea of what several of the buildings were before Uzushio was destroyed. They had explored around the training ground where they had sparred. They had discovered that everything around the training ground was related to either training, medical care, weapon manufacturing and maintenance and jutsu development.Aside from the medical facility at the training ground, they had found what they believe was the hospital. They entered the hospital, smaller than Konoha’s but somehow more advanced, as if every corner had been made for efficiency. Naruto slowed, imagining Tsunade’s reaction if she ever saw it. The Uzumaki were resourceful, skilled… yet no one outside even knew. Could he honour that history by staying here? The were several buildings that appeared to be for weapons manufacturing, if the forges were anything to go by, although forges could just mean metal objects, not necessarily weapons, but it was a ninja village. As they passed the silent forges, Sasuke wanted to tell Naruto they could always come back later, but he held back. Instead, he murmured, “The forge setup here reminds me of the Uchiha district’s. We built to last.” He paused, letting his words linger. “Doesn’t mean we stayed there, though.” Sasuke kept his tone neutral, but he hoped Naruto would see the similarity. Sometimes, rebuilding meant taking what mattered, not staying bound by the past. Naruto turned to look at him. He nodded his head seconds later in acknowledgement of Sasuke's words. They stepped into one of buildings, the scent of rust and faint charred wood filled the air. Naruto wrinkled his nose, imagining the clang of hammers, the heat that would have once filled this place. “Bet they made more than just weapons here. Maybe even armor,” he mused, running his fingers over a soot-blackened anvil. A sense of pride washed over him, realising these were the very tools his ancestors used.“Yes. But from what else we've discovered here in Uzushio, I bet they also made some intricate decorative pieces here too. Look at some of the items on the shelves around here.” Sasuke turned indicating the shelves in the shadows at the back of the building. On the shelves Naruto could see fine chisels, burins, small hammers and punches. They were worn but still recognisable by their fine, pointed tips. Tucked behind the hammers was a small magnifying glass that he had seen jewellers in other villages use for inlays and engraving. On another shelf there were stamps with intricate patterns and what looked like clan symbols. Around the shop on tables were sheets of rusted metal with detailed design patterns. Naruto could see swirling Uzumaki clan symbols, floral motifs, and geometric patterns. The shelves also had scattered pieces of metals gold, silver, and bronze, as well as a few colored stones and some bits of enamel, that could have been used for inlays on swords, armor, or ceremonial pieces. There were also small, dried-up pots with remnants of paints and lacquers, in red, blue, and green, suggesting that the artisan also added colour to some items.Near one of the forges there were clay moulds in ornate shapes, that may have been used for crafting hilts, amulets, or possibly even small ornaments. The moulds had designs for handles, decorative weapon pommels, and some looked like they may have been used for fine jewelry. Obviously this forge had worked with high quality metals.“Wow. There's really quite a bit left here, huh. I don't know much about forging metals, but even I can tell a lot more than kunai and swords were made here.” Naruto slowly walked around the forges, reverently running his fingers over the cold, blackened stone. He picked up the small tools and turned them over in his hands, trying to imagine what the artisan who used it looked like. He inspected the stamps, wondering had anyone commissioned these particular patterns or were they standard patterns that the artisan used.Naruto moved back towards the door of the building, he turned looked back in through the entrance. He tried to imagine what it would have been like to enter when the forge was operating. He closed his eyes and he could see a muscular person bent over the forge retrieving something from inside it. He could hear the strike of the hammer on the anvil as the artisan hammered out a rough shape. He sighed, opened his eyes and turned to Sasuke.Sasuke raised his brow in question, but didn't say anything immediately. After a couple seconds he asked, “Ready to continue onto the next building, or do you want to keep exploring this one?”Naruto nodded his agreement and they moved back outside. The next building had them confused as to its purpose. Sasuke activated his Sharingan, “Look here,” he pointed to the faint glow lining the walls. “There’s intricate chakra residue embedded in the walls, layered in a way that would take years to perfect. No ordinary sealing room, this level of complexity is meant for serious jutsu development. I’d guess they tested high level seals here, maybe even unstable ones.” He let his Sharingan’s glow fade as he turned to Naruto. “They were doing impressive work, just like in Konoha’s labs, only hidden better.”All of the buildings they had just explored, were on the Eastern side of the island. There was no way they could be seen from the docks on the western side, let alone from the eastern shore of the Fire Nation. It was obviously deliberately built this way, to shield Uzushio’s secrets from the mainland. They moved towards the south side of the island. It seemed that the wind here was not as strong as the eastern side. Here there were a few open spaces that Naruto initially thought might be parks, but as they walked around they noticed that the structures left behind pointed more towards a marketplace. The area was not as big as Konoha’s marketplace, but it was more park like.As they walked further, Naruto noticed the faint scent of salt drifting up from the shore, mingling with the earthy, almost mossy aroma of the stone underfoot. A light breeze stirred the leaves, and Naruto felt a strange peace settle over him, each distant seabird’s call blending into the rhythm of the quiet market. There were big shady trees placed around the area, that ensured the majority of the area was well shaded. Naruto noticed the spiral shape, the Uzumaki symbol itself, woven into the market’s very layout. It felt like a message from the past, a promise that Uzushio’s spirit was woven into the island, waiting for someone to bring it to life. The market wound into a central square that had a raised platform. Again everything was made of stone, so still in good condition. The stalls, carved out of a pale, almost glistening stone, held up surprisingly well, their surfaces adorned with faint carvings that twisted and spiraled. Intricate symbols of swirling waves and connected spirals ran along the edges of the countertops, each detail carefully etched as if the artist had intended them to last for centuries. Naruto traced his fingers over one of the designs, feeling the smoothness of the lines worn down by time, but still remarkably intact, a quiet testament to Uzushio’s pride in their craft. On a low stone bench, partially hidden beneath fallen leaves, Naruto noticed the edge of a broken bowl, its surface decorated with a blue and red pattern. He picked it up carefully, brushing off the dirt to reveal an intricate Uzumaki swirl painted along the rim. The colors were faded, but the delicate brushstrokes made him imagine someone sitting here, perhaps sharing a meal or trading goods, living a life that felt so distant yet unexpectedly close. The shade trees reminded Naruto of the busy marketplace back in Konoha, but here, everything felt different, more tranquil, almost reverent. In Konoha, the market was alive with sounds of merchants shouting, children laughing, and the hum of constant movement. Here, Uzushio’s market seemed like a place meant as much for gathering and sharing as it was for trading, with benches placed beneath the trees and pathways lined with smooth stone to make it easy for people to gather together.”As they moved towards the south edge of the island, they noticed a shift in the air, warmer, with a softer breeze that carried a faint saltiness. There were little stone shelters, each shaped like a low, open hut, that all looked out towards the ocean. “This must have been a recreational area. Look at how this beach has been walled off from the other areas. And the water is a lot calmer here than other areas.” Sasuke remarked as they wandered around the area.Naruto hummed in response, he could imagine families or friends gathering here, sitting on the stone benches and watching the horizon stretch out forever.Naruto closed his eyes, almost hearing the laughter, the light jingle of a merchant’s bells, and the scuff of sandals against stone. He imagined the flash of red Uzumaki clan symbols woven into robes, children racing between the stalls, voices drifting over the scent of cooking fish and seaweed… He opened his eyes, tracing his fingers over the carvings, Naruto felt a pang that went beyond loneliness, it was the absence of a place that should have been his to know, his to protect. A home he’d never known. It was mixed with the strange comfort of knowing that, even in its silence, Uzushio had been a place of connection and resilience.Naruto and Sasuke sat under one of stone shelters on the beach and watched the sun go down over the island. 'Tomorrow I want to watch the sunset over the docks. Pretty sure it will rival the sunset in Konoha. Also do you think we could come back here in the morning and watch the sunrise. I’ve never seen the sun rise over the ocean before. I think that would be pretty nice. What do you think, Sasuke?”Sasuke looked at Naruto's hopeful face. “Hn. We’ll watch the sunrise in the morning,” Sasuke murmured, letting his fingers lightly brush over Naruto’s. “Since you seem so fascinated by it.”He took Naruto's hand in his and softly kissed his knuckles. Naruto's cheeks pinked slightly as he ducked his head. Naruto then laid his head on Sasuke's shoulder as watched the darkness move over Uzushio.***********They only had the northern side of the island left to explore. The northern area of the island appeared to be the residential area of Uzushio. The layout of the area reflected just how, close knit the Uzumaki clan was.All the homes were built from stone just like the rest of Uzushio. They were sturdy, rounded, flowing shapes that echoed the clan’s spiral motif. Each house had smooth, arched doorways and windows that looked like they were designed to withstand the coastal winds. The houses were compact and close together, with shared walls, possibly due to the limited amount of space on the island. Naruto felt like the closeness allowed families to be near each other, instead of feeling cramped, and reflected the Uzumaki Clan's sense of community. Each home was adorned with intricate carvings of Uzumaki spirals or symbols that looked like it was for protection, going on the placement of the symbols. The symbols also showed off the clan’s sealing expertise. The engravings looked like they served as both decorations and talismans.“The Uchiha used to do something similar around their homes as well.” Sasuke stated, looking closely at some of the carvings. “According to my parents, the symbols offered spiritual and physical protection, at least the symbols the Uchiha carved did. I imagine the Uzumaki probably did something similar.” Sasuke’s gaze lingered on the familiar spiral symbol, his fingers tracing its edges with reverence. “It’s strange,” he murmured, a hint of awe creeping into his voice. “I saw this symbol every day, and I never thought it was Uzumaki. It feels… grounding, knowing our clans were linked in some way. Do you think that maybe your mother carved it. Our mothers were good friends, weren't they?”Naruto's eyed widened as he stepped closer to look at the symbol Sasuke was looking at, “Y…yeah, according to the stuff that I was given after we returned to Konoha after the war, they were good friends.” Naruto sniffled, his brow furrowed, his heart heavy. “So maybe…our mothers weren’t just friends. Maybe they were like family, like…sisters.” His voice cracked on the last word, and he looked down, wiping his eyes quickly.Sasuke placed a hand on Naruto’s shoulder, gripping it firmly. “They passed on their connection to us,” he said, his voice steady but soft. “And maybe…that’s something we can carry forward, in our own way.”Sasuke looked at him for a moment, then wrapped his arm around Naruto's shoulder and drew him into a hug. Naruto sobbed quietly for a couple of minutes. He lifted his head, and took a shuddering breath, “S…sorry….”“Nope. Don't apologise. You're allowed to feel overwhelmed. It's a lot to take in. I get it, I’m feeling a bit the same. I saw this symbol everyday until my family died, and never knew it was an Uzumaki seal.” Sasuke clenched his jaw and breathed harshly through his teeth, “Everyday it seems we find more problems to lay at Konoha’s feet.” Sasuke gently lifted Naruto's head to look him in the eyes, “Do you want to call it quits today?”Naruto shook his head, “ No, I’m okay. I just needed a bit of time to collect myself. Thanks Sasuke.”Sasuke kissed him lightly on the cheek and took his hand as they continued to explore the residential area. They found the homes were built in clusters. And between each cluster there was small, courtyards that had seating areas, fountains, and mosaic tiled floors. It looked like they could have been places for families to gather, eat, or work together on projects like seal crafting. Each courtyard had a few small garden plots that were either completely bare now or overgrown. Naruto imagined that the plots could have had medicinal herbs, vegetables, or even flowers in them. He certainly enjoyed growing plants of all kind, maybe it was an Uzumaki thing. There were also areas that looked like play areas where children might have once trained or played games. There were training posts, smooth stones for jumping, and old marks on the ground that resembled marks the Naruto remembered making when he practiced basic jutsu, as a child.Naruto paused as something caught his eye, a tiny clay cup, half buried in the dirt near the base of a stone wall. He brushed away the soil gently, revealing a little red swirl painted along the rim, the Uzumaki crest, faint but still visible.“Sasuke,” he called, holding it up. “Think this belonged to a kid?”Sasuke glanced over, a rare softness in his gaze. “Could be,” he replied. “Or maybe someone crafted it as a gift. It’s a bit rough around the edges… looks like something handmade, maybe for a festival.”Naruto’s lips curled into a bittersweet smile as he imagined a young Uzumaki child proudly presenting the cup to a friend or family member. “I guess they had lives a lot like ours. Simple things, you know? Maybe they didn’t need anything else.”The courtyards also had small, outdoor kitchen areas that contained stone hearths for cooking and grills that could have been designed for fish and vegetables. Naruto believed that this meant that people cooked together regularly, which would have enhanced the community bonds.Near the outdoor kitchens, there were stone pavilions with tables and benches would have allowed families to share meals together. All the houses had large windows and opened onto the courtyards. These were obviously designed to bring in light and allow for views of the ocean. Depending on the direction the windows faced meant that they either faced towards the sunrise or sunset. The design and placement made the most of the island’s beautiful location. The windows of a lot of the homes were still intact. They were be heavily weathered but seemed to be reinforced with seals to withstand storms. Naruto noticed that the windows had an amber tint and were unusually smooth. Curious, he reached out and touched it, “It's not glass.” He said, “Its surface feels slightly warm and it's soft to the touch. It's not as cold or hard as glass is, I wonder what its made of?”Sasuke, intrigued by Naruto’s description of the window pane, activated his Sharingan. “There's faint traces of chakra threads running through the material, especially around the edges where it meets the frame.” Sasuke said as he studied the pane, “From what I can see the chakra threads suggest to me that they're for reinforcement.”“What do you think they're made from? It's not like anything I’ve ever seen before, ya know.”“I’m not completely sure, but I think they might be made from a type of resin and not just any resin, but something that has been crafted for durability.”“Resin? What fo you think they could have made that from?”“Mmm,” Sasuke pondered Naruto's question as he looked around at the local trees. There were quite a few conifers around but there were also some Eucalyptus and Acacia trees around as well. He leaned forward a sniffed the panel, “You’ve got a better sense of smell than I do, what do you smell from the panel?”Naruto leaned into the panel and took a sniff at it, “It smells a little like pine to me, would that be wha5 they used?”“Most likely. There's plenty of conifers around the island, so it's probably a good bet that they used pine resin to create the window panes. It seems like they embedded seals into the resin to protect it from cracking and to make it waterproof. Ingenious.” Naruto could hear the admiration in Sasuke's voice.Inside the homes, there were small altars that looked like they could have been dedicated to ancestors. “I remember there being an altar in our home in the Uchiha district, it was a fairly common practice, especially in the bigger Clans.” Sasuke remarked.Shelving was carved into stone walls that was probably used to hold everyday items, from bowls and cups to tools for sealing techniques.Back outside there were stone paths, winding in gentle spirals, connecting the homes. The paths were lined with low stone lanterns and coastal plants, that created a beautiful walk through the village.Protective seals were carved along the pathways and everywhere around the village that looked like they were to reinforce security and ward off any unwelcome chakra signatures. At the heart of the residential area, there was a central well. The well was intricately decorated with the Uzumaki spiral and other clan symbols. The seals seemed like they were there to keep the water clean.Naruto was awed and saddened by what they had discovered in the residential area of Uzushio. The sense of community that came through, even though it was abandoned and in ruins, was overwhelming. The sheer amount of ingenious uses of seals was almost too much to take in.The Uzumaki were not only shinobi, they were artisans that took pride in their community and created spaces that were filled with laughter and love.Naruto had always dreamt of belonging to a community like Uzushio. As they walked, Naruto’s steps grew slower, his mind weighed down by the decisions he now felt looming ahead. “Do you think… if we brought Uzushio back to life, she would just end up like this again?” He motioned to the ruins around them, his voice barely above a whisper. “Konoha turned its back on her once. What’s stopping history from repeating itself?”Sasuke turned to him, eyes sharp and thoughtful. “The difference now is that you’re here, Naruto. Uzushio isn’t just a village to rebuild, it’s a legacy you get to choose how to protect. And maybe this time, it won’t be about relying on anyone else.”Naruto nodded slowly, still uncertain but feeling a flicker of hope. “Maybe you’re right,” he murmured. “If I rebuild Uzushio, it’ll be a place for everyone who wants to belong, like I always wanted.” He had so much to think about.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

After they had finished exploring and mapping Uzushio, Naruto and Sasuke returned to the Uzukage tower. They prepared their dinner in comfortable silence.“Hey Sas…….” Naruto stirred his food absently, the steam curling lazily upward. The smell of miso filled his nostrils, but it didn’t seem to comfort him the way it usually did. The weight of his thoughts made the silence feel heavier than usual.Sasuke noticed the tension in Naruto's shoulders and face. “Mmmm?” He said nothing else, allowing Naruto time to collect his thoughts. Obviously this was important and difficult for Naruto to voice.Naruto looked up at the ceiling for a few seconds before shaking his head and returning Sasuke's gaze. “I’ve been thinking….I think I want to do the remaining trials.”“Okay. What is the problem?”“Heh. You know me so well.” Naruto scratched the back of his head, “I.. I feel like… ya know….I feel that if I even want to consider rebuilding Uzushio…… I… need to understand her.” He sighed again, “I feel like if I don't know why she was destroyed….what the other nations were after….why they felt so threatened by the Uzumaki… I might ….probably will make all the same mistakes, ya know.” Naruto rubbed the back of his neck, his hand fidgeting nervously against the fabric of his jacket. When his gaze met Sasuke’s, there was something there, a flicker of doubt, like he was teetering on the edge of a decision too big to grasp.Sasuke nodded his head in understanding, “I agree. To rebuild Uzushio, you need to understand her past and learn from it. But how you choose to move forward, that’s your legacy, and only yours to shape.” He paused letting the weight of his words settle. “I’m certain Uzushio will…has accepted you, regardless of you completing the trials. The scroll and the chakra image of the Uzukage mentioned that the trials were more about regaining lost knowledge.” Sasuke took Naruto's hand in his, “You have managed just fine without that knowledge. You managed to defeat a literal God, without it. I’m certain that you will do a magnificent job of rebuilding Uzushio even without the knowledge.” Sasuke paused again to make sure he had Naruto's full attention. “But if you want to do the trials to gain that knowledge, and you believe it is the right thing to do. Go for it. I will be here beside you whichever way you choose.”Naruto swallowed hard, Sasuke’s words settling over him. “Thanks, Sasuke,” he said, his voice firmer now. His fingers tightened slightly around Sasuke’s hand as if drawing strength from him. “I think I can do this.”“Hn.” Sasuke smirked.“Bastard.” Naruto laughed. They returned to their food, idly talking about their discoveries in Uzushio. As they were finishing their food Naruto looked up, “You know, I’ve spent my whole life being told I don’t belong anywhere. And now… now I’ve found this place, this legacy, and it’s mine. But what if I’m not good enough for it? What if Uzushio sees right through me?”Sasuke snorted, “Dobe, you’ve already proven yourself a thousand times over. Uzushio isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being you. And if you need to face the trials to feel that, then I’ll make sure you get through them.” He’d seen Naruto push through hell before, wars, beasts, betrayals. This was different. Uzushio was alive in a way that unnerved him. What if the trials demanded more than Naruto could give? Or worse, what if they changed him? He wouldn’t let that happen. Whatever Uzushio threw at them, he would be there to pull Naruto out of the fire. He owed him that much.Naruto sighed, “But….what if I rebuild Uzushio, and the same thing happens all over again? The wars, the destruction… all the lives lost?”Sasuke cupped Naruto's cheek to make him look Sasuke in the eye, “Then don’t rebuild Uzushio the way it was. Build it the way it should’ve been. Use what you learn here, but don’t be afraid to make it your own. You’re not just an Uzumaki, Naruto. You’re you. And that’s why it’ll be different.”After their meal, Sasuke retrieved the scroll and they read it together, trying to see if there were any clues as to what the remaining trials might entail.“The first two trials were pretty intense. I guess that means that the others will be just as intense, maybe even more.” Naruto mused while looking over the scroll.“Mmm. I think that they will probably be more intense. They are not just testing you to make sure you will be able to repair containment seals and not use the knowledge for your own selfish reasons.” Sasuke paused while he raised his head to look at Naruto, “These remaining trials are testing you as an Uzumaki. Are you worthy of the knowledge of the Uzumaki Clan, not just compatible.”Naruto huffed a small self deprecating laugh, “The story if my life, huh. I should be used to having to prove myself to others by now.Sasuke scowled at Naruto's response, “No, dobe. It's not about “proving” yourself. I believe it's more about Uzushio understanding your internal motivations and trusting you. It’s more about earning Uzushio’s trust than proving yourself to her. Does that make sense?”“I.. I guess so. So you're saying that it's not like what I had to do in Konoha. That's it's more like what I had to do when I was on the island of Genbu.”“Genbu? Is that the turtle island you told me about?”“Heh, yeah. That's where I learned how to control Kurama’s chakra. Where I befriended Kurama.”Sasuke looked at Naruto, smiling “Then, yes. From what I remember of what you told me, it definitely is more like that. Both you and Kurama needed to earn each other's trust before you could learn to work together.”Naruto sat quietly for a moment, “That makes sense I guess. It also makes it seem less hateful, if that makes sense?”Sasuke breathed out slowly to ease his rising temper, “Yes it does make sense. Dobe.” He looked back at the scroll.Naruto glanced at the shadows stretching across the room. For a moment, he felt the faintest hum, like a heartbeat reverberating through the walls. “Do you ever feel like she’s watching us?” he asked quietly.Sasuke didn’t respond immediately, his dark eyes scanning the room. “I think she never stopped… It doesn't look like this scroll is going to give us any information on the trials. Which makes sense I guess. Just because you're capable of sealing the corrupted chakra beings, doesn't mean Uzushio will trust you with all her secrets.”“Hmm, yeah you're probably right. Tomorrow we'll go back to the chamber where we got the scroll and see if we can find out anything there. What do you think, Sasuke?”Sasuke hesitated for a moment before speaking, the words unfamiliar on his tongue. “Would… Do you mind if I accompany you in the trials?” His voice was steady, but deep down, he wasn’t entirely sure why he wanted to. Was it loyalty? Or the growing need to stay close to the one person who’d never turned away from him?Naruto leaned forward and pulled Sasuke into a hug, “I was just about to ask you if you would consider accompanying me. So yes, if you want to, I would love to have you with me.”Sasuke still looked hesitant, “You do realise that if I join you in these trials, they won’t just be about you. Uzushio will test us both.”Naruto looked at Sasuke and grinned, “Good. That way I’ll have backup if I mess up.”Sasuke huffed, “I’m not sure it’s that simple. Uzushio knows you, knows your heart. She doesn’t know me. What if she thinks I’m a liability? What if my past makes her reject me?”Naruto rolled his eyes, “Tch. Don’t be stupid. You’re here because of who you are now, not who you were. Uzushio has already seen what lengths you're willing to go to help and protect me, when we sealed those corrupted chakra beings. She would be lucky to have you.”Naruto stood up and held his hand out to Sasuke. “Come on, let’s go to bed, I have a feeling tomorrow's going to be a big day.”Sasuke smiled as he took Naruto's hand and they made their way to the room they used as a bedroom. Naruto paused at the doorway to the room, looking back toward the scroll they’d left on the table. “Do you think Uzushio will really accept me?” he asked quietly.Sasuke placed a hand on his shoulder. “She already has, dobe. You just need to accept yourself.” His eyes lost focus, “When I think about what I lost with the Uchiha… the traditions, the history… It’s painful knowing I’ll never truly understand it. You have the chance to bring all that back for your clan. Don’t waste it. But also….don’t let it consume you.”Naruto laughed “Heh. You sound like Kakashi sensei. All wise and stuff.”Sasuke scoffed, “Tch. Maybe he had a point every now and then.”Naruto smiled faintly. “Thanks, bastard.”Together, they stepped into the room, the weight of tomorrow lingering unspoken between them.************Naruto opened his eyes. The sun was shining through the doorway, lighting the room in soft early morning sunlight. The salty tang of the sea breeze drifted into the room, mingling with the warmth of the sunlight. Naruto stretched, savouring the serenity of the moment. He glanced at Sasuke, his face was softened in sleep, framed by strands of dark hair. Here, in Uzushio, Sasuke looked free in a way Naruto had rarely seen, untouched by the burdens of their shared past. The longer they stayed here, more like home it felt.Could he really leave Konoha for good? He was so conflicted. Konoha was where he’d grown up, where Iruka sensei had shown him kindness for the first time. It was where he’d made lifelong friends, and if he chose, eventually fulfill his dream of becoming Hokage. Could he truly leave all that behind. Uzushio felt like it had been waiting for him all along? If he was truly honest with himself, he really wanted to stay here and rebuild Uzushio. On the other hand he wanted to stay in Konoha and help to make it better.“You could make it better, even from here.’ Kurama rumbled in his head.Naruto entered the space he shared with Kurama. “What do you mean, make it better from here?”Kurama rolled his eyes at Naruto, “Kit, you don’t need Konoha’s approval to change the world. You’ve already done that a dozen times. If those fools can’t see the opportunity you’d give them by building something new, that’s their problem, not yours.”Naruto leaned against Kurama’s side and closed his eyes. He imagined what Uzushio could look like. He imagined a vibrant, thriving village where jutsu and seals were used more for making peoples lives better, than for war. Where children could be children and not soldiers. Where Sasuke and himself could be happy. “Do you really think we could do that here? Do you really think I could do that?”Kurama hummed his agreement. They sat there quietly, enjoying each other's company until Kurama nudged Naruto to let him know Sasuke was awakening.Naruto left the shared space and watched Sasuke wake up. “Good morning Sasuke.” Naruto murmured as he leaned over to kiss him lightly on the lips.Sasuke smiled softly as he returned the kiss, “Mmm, that is definitely a nice way to wake up.”Naruto smiled into the kiss, feeling a strange but welcome sense of clarity. Whatever decision he made, he knew one thing for certain: this was where he wanted to be, by Sasuke’s side. “Come on,” he murmured, pulling Sasuke up. “Let’s get started. There’s so much we can do here.”After a leisurely breakfast, Naruto and Sasuke returned to the hidden chamber beneath the Uzukage tower.Naruto placed his hand on the pedestal and channeled a smal amount of chakra into it. The seals around the room flared and then died back down. A deep hum echoed through the chamber, vibrating in the walls like the distant roar of crashing waves. The light around them dimmed as a soft, glowing mist began to gather in the center of the room. Slowly, the mist spiraled upward, taking shape. Before them was a graceful, ethereal woman with flowing red Uzumaki hair. Her hair rippled like waves around her. Her eyes were the blue of the deepest ocean, and filled with wisdom, but also sorrow, and locked onto Naruto and Sasuke. She was wearing flowing robes that were covered with seals. She radiated an aura of calm and strength, and was surrounded by faint whorls of swirling chakra symbols.“Welcome,” she said, her voice a serene yet powerful blend of the ocean’s whispers and storms. “I am Uzushio.”Her gaze lingered on Naruto, and her lips curved into a faint smile. “Naruto Uzumaki. You carry the bloodline of this land, the legacy of its people. I have watched you tread the paths of courage and pain, and I sense in you the spirit of a protector, one who seeks to mend what was broken.”She then turned to Sasuke, her expression unreadable. “And you, Sasuke Uchiha. An outsider, yet not a stranger to the trials of loss and resilience. You stand here not as an interloper, but as a partner in this journey.”The air around her seemed to swirl gently, the chakra infused mist forming faint spirals in the air. Her voice softened, though it still held weight. “You have come seeking answers, knowledge, and perhaps redemption, for this land and for yourselves. But know this, the wisdom of Uzushio is not given freely. It is earned, through trials that will test your resolve, your bond, and the truth of your intentions.”She extended her hand toward Naruto. “Do you accept this challenge, child of the Uzumaki?” She extended her other hand towards Sasuke, “And you, child of the Uchiha. Will you rise to meet the trials of resilience, wisdom, and heart? Know that these tests will not be easy, but they are the path to unlocking the secrets that lie within my waters and walls.”Naruto’s hand trembled as he extended it toward Uzushio’s. He glanced at Sasuke, who nodded, stoic as ever. The silent exchange steadied him, and he clasped her glowing hand firmly. Sasuke reached out and took her other hand. “We accept your challenge.” They said in unison while bowing deeply to Uzushio. She smiled serenely at them as her chakra flared in response to their acceptance and respect. “The Uzumaki strength lies in their bonds. Your connection is undeniable, but bonds can be tested. Together, you may find strength, or discover the limits of trust. The first trial, the trial of resilience will reveal what lies within each of you.”Naruto and Sasuke both nodded their understanding, “We’re ready to complete the trials.” Naruto stated confidently, “We understand that we will be rigorously tested, but we believe we're ready and we'll be successful.”Sasuke bowed his head. “For too long, I’ve walked a path of destruction. Rebuilding Uzushio is a chance to create something lasting, something right.”Uzushio’s smile widened at Sasuke's words, “Very well. If you are both ready, the trial will begin.”Without warning Naruto and Sasuke were plunged into a vision of Uzushio’s destruction. The noise of the vortexes was deafening. It was dark, cold and wet. They could hear the cries and chants of the attackers. They could smell the ocean as it surged around the island. They could feel the fear, anger and despair of the remaining Uzumaki shinobi as they made their final stand.Naruto shook as an overwhelming feeling of sorrow hit him. He could feel what the Uzumaki were feeling as they fought to the last breath to protect Uzushio. He staggered, clutching at his chest. He could feel the despair and guilt of the fleeing civilians, their anguish searing into his mind. He felt his own guilt. He wondered if he would ever be able live up to the Uzumaki legacy. He looked over at the vortexes, where the Uzukage was feeding them his remaining chakra. The vortexes were beautiful. They shimmered with their own light, showing the grim look of determination on the Uzukage’s face. He knew what was about to happen, as he had already been shown this scene before.Naruto could feel his determination crumbling under the sheer weight of despair and anger he felt. He could feel the tears streaming down his face as he watched his Clan being obliterated. I’ll never be enough, Naruto thought bitterly. How can I ever live up to this legacy? How can I rebuild something that even they couldn’t save?Naruto’s legs buckled, and he dropped to his knees. A sob wracked his chest as he felt himself sinking into the despair of the moment.Warmth. A gentle squeeze on his hand.Naruto’s head snapped up, his wide eyes meeting Sasuke’s steady, determined gaze. “I’m here. You're not alone. We will right this wrong together.”For a moment, Naruto stared at him, uncomprehending. Then, with a shuddering breath, he nodded. A small, grateful smile broke through the anguish, and he squeezed Sasuke’s hand in return.Sasuke watched the destruction of Uzushio unfolding in front of him. He was immediately pulled into memories of his own Clan’s massacre. He could see scenes of his family’s deaths overlapping with the destruction he was witnessing in front of him.He remembered how he felt when he returned home from the academy to a silent, blood soaked compound. He remembered seeing all of the bodies of his family members lying throughout the compound as he raced home, fear urging him on.He remembered how he hesitated at the entrance to his home. How he heard his mother call out for him to not enter. He remembered the stench of the blood as it soaked through the floorboards. He remembered falling to his knees at the sight of his parents dead on the floor. He remembered the fear he felt as Itachi loomed over him. He remembered thinking he was going to die, but instead he was put into a genjutsu where he relived the massacre over and over.He remembers feeling anger and helplessness, similar to how Naruto was feeling right now. He remembers feeling guilty for failing to save the Uchiha name.Sasuke clenched his fist, forgetting that he was still holding Naruto's hand. His nails dug into his palm as the past and present blurred together. He saw his Clan’s final moments superimposed on the destruction of Uzushio. Naruto looked at Sasuke in alarm as his gaze sharpened. He had seen this look before, the storm of anger and despair that consumed Sasuke before he left for Orochimaru. Acting quickly, he turned to face Sasuke fully, clasping his hand with both of his.“Sasuke,” Naruto said, voice steady but urgent. “Come back to me. Look at me. It’s me, Naruto.” He pressed their foreheads together, his breath warm against Sasuke’s skin. “You’re not alone. Talk to me. What’s going on?”Sasuke blinked, his vision clearing as the phantom images receded. He stared down at their joined hands, his grip loosening. “S-sorry,” he murmured, his voice hoarse. “I… got lost.”Naruto didn’t pull away. “Don’t apologise. What did you see?”For a moment, Sasuke hesitated. Then, quietly, he answered. “I saw them. My Clan. It felt the same… the fear, the helplessness.” He drew in a shaky breath. “The guilt.”Naruto’s hands tightened around his. “You’re not there anymore, Sasuke. And we’ll make sure this place doesn’t end like that again.”The vision surrounding them abruptly disappeared. Both Naruto and Sasuke were left reeling for a few seconds as the destruction of Uzushio vanished.Uzushio was once again standing before them. She was looking at them with understanding and compassion. “Well done. You have both shown that you are prepared to support each other without judgment. You have also shown that you are both well attuned to each others behaviours and reactions. This will hold you in good stead for the next phase of the trial.”They barely had time to take a breath before they found themselves separated and in what looked like an enormous maze. The maze stretched endlessly, its towering walls cloaked in shifting shadows. The air was thick with a faint hum of chakra, as if the walls themselves were alive and watching.Sasuke looked around, trying to decide what was expected of him. Where was Naruto? Was this like the original trial he had done? Was he expected to just wait here for Naruto to find him?As he had that thought, he heard a faint whisper, “Naruto doesn’t need you.” It said, “He shines brighter without you… How long until he leaves you behind, like everyone else?”He was suddenly confronted with a vision of Naruto. He was happy, laughing in a way Sasuke had not seen for years. He looked strong. He was surrounded by people, but Sasuke knew he wasn't one of them. Naruto was Hokage, he was adored, respected and without Sasuke. He had a family. He was glowing with good health, strength and power. He really doesn't need me weighing him down.Sasuke jumped when something wet hit his hand. He touched his face and realised he was crying. He lifted his head and saw writing appearing on the wall in front of him.“I am a lesson spoken in defiance,A promise made amidst chaos and pain.Though the world may scorn me, I will endure,For I am the bridge that refuses to break. What am I, and who gave me life?”A riddle? Just great. Sasuke thought. He read it again. As he read it a memory flashed through his brain. Him and Naruto fighting at The Valley of the End. He had just put his fist through Naruto's chest, just missing his heart. He was preparing to finish Naruto off when Naruto became encased in red chakra. His wounds healed and his facial features took on a more beastly form. “I’ll break every bone in your body if I have to! I’ll bring you back to Konoha!” Naruto growled at him as they prepared to face off.Naruto had always been there, a constant force pulling him back from the edge. Every time Sasuke fell, Naruto was the hand reaching out, bruised, battered, but unyielding. The thought of that bridge breaking terrified him, but… it never had, had it? Naruto never gave up, even when Sasuke gave him every reason to.“Heh. Of course. One thing he has in spades. The answer is unwavering hope.” Sasuke spoke out loud. “And of course its always been Naruto who gave it life.”The writing disappeared and new writing appeared.“You have named it, but do you believe it? Do you trust the bridge he has built for you, or will you reject it once again? To pass, you must accept what he offers: not strength, but faith.”“Of course I believe in him, trust him. He is the only one I trust. He is my one and only friend… no, more than that. He’s my anchor, my constant. The one who never stopped believing in me, even when I had nothing left to believe in. My… soulmate.” Sasuke stood firm, hands relaxed by his side, waiting. For what, he had no idea. The writing disappeared. The whispers stopped. Sasuke looked around. The maze stretched before him, its twists and turns cloaked in uncertainty. Sasuke’s steps were firm, his path clear, find Naruto, not just in this labyrinth, but always. He set off determined to navigate the maze.Naruto spun around in a circle. Where was he now? It appeared to be a maze. The maze stretched endlessly in every direction, its walls flickering with faint, ghostly light. Shadows shifted in the corners of his vision, but when he turned to look, there was nothing there. The air felt thick, heavy with an unseen weight that pressed against his chest. Where was Sasuke? As soon as he thought of Sasuke, he heard a whisper, “Sasuke only stays out of guilt.” It said, “He’ll leave when it suits him, just like before.”In front of him he saw Sasuke walking away. Naruto called out to him, but he didn't respond, didn't turn around, just kept walking. Naruto started running after him. “Oi, bastard! Where are you going?”The faster he ran, the further away Sasuke got. Naruto stopped running. His breath coming in rapid gasps. He watched Sasuke get further and further away. No. He wouldn't leave me. Would he? Naruto shook his head, his hands clenching into fists. The whispers burrowed into his mind, each word tugging at wounds he'd thought long healed. “What if they're right?” a small, unbidden voice whispered from within. “What if he leaves again?” Then, like sunlight breaking through storm clouds, another thought surged forward. “No. Sasuke would never leave me again. I know that. I believe that.” His voice grew louder, steadier. “He loves me. He believes in me. I trust him to have my back. Always.”“Naruto!”Naruto turned around. There was no one there“Naruto! Where are you?”Again. He could hear Sasuke calling out to him. Naruto turned toward the voice, his heart hammering. Behind him, the vision of Sasuke walking away grew sharper, almost tangible. For a moment, he hesitated, caught between what his eyes saw and what his heart knew. “Sasuke!” he shouted, his voice raw. The whispering intensified, pulling at him like claws, but he forced his legs to move, stepping toward the voice that called his name. “I trust you,” he muttered, then louder, “I TRUST YOU!” The visions wavered, then shattered like glass, leaving only the sound of Sasuke's voice guiding him forward.“Naruto! Don’t Stop, keep moving!”Naruto looked to where he thought Sasuke’s voice was coming from. He thought he saw Sasuke ahead of him, looking for him. He decided to ignore the visions he was seeing and just follow Sasuke's voice. They moved through the maze, each one calling out for the other. The mists swirled around them, making visabilty low. At times it appeared as if the walls of the maze moved when they got close to each other, but neither one was sure if it was an illusion or not. After several agonising minutes Naruto stumbled into the centre of the maze. His gaze fell on a relived looking Sasuke. “Found you! At last. I knew it was you calling out to me.” Naruto grabbed Sasuke in a fierce hug, “I knew you would help me find my way.” Naruot buried his face in Sasuke’s shoulder, a sob wracking his body. “Thank you.” He whispered .Sasuke leaned his head on Naruto’s and took a deep breath, “You’re not going to get rid of me that easily, Dobe.”The maze faded from view and Uzushio was again standing before them. Her expresion was almost fond. “You have passed the second stage of the trial. You have both shown that you believe in each other. You have shown that you trust each other, no matter what others might say or do to try and destroy that trust.” She paused to allow Naruto and Sasuke to take in her words. “It is now time for the final part of the trial.”Uzushio waved her hand and suddenly they were holding a large spiral shaped seal. The spiral was brimming with chakra, pulsing in rhythmic waves and glowing faintly. "The Spiral must return to its heart. Only when it rests in its rightful place will the path forward be revealed. But the heart does not reveal itself to those who walk alone or without purpose." With that she vanished and they were left holding the seal.“Alright, let’s get this seal to where it’s supposed to go.” Naruto said, “Do you think we can push it, so that it rolls?”Sasuke looked at the seal. “Mmm, maybe we should try to carry it.”“Hmph. It’s round, it should just roll fairly easily.” Naruto replied.Sasuke looked dubious, but shrugged his shoulders and joined Naruto to push the seal along. It started to roll easily, but after a couple of steps they noticed that it was getting heavier and heavier. After a dozen steps, the seal became impossible to move. “What if we apply some chakra? Do you think it might budge then?” Naruto asked as he continued to to attempt to push it.“No. Actually I think if we apply chakra it will just get harder and harder to move.” Sasuke stepped back to have a better look at the seal.Uzushio’s voice echoed around them, “The Spiral does not yield to power without purpose. To find its place, you must understand its meaning.”Naruto stood back up, “What do you think that means?”Sasuke continued to study the seal, “Not sure. How about you have a good look at the seal. Tell me what you see.”The spiral had begun to emit faint, swirling chakra patterns that shifted and flowed. As Naruto watched, he saw the Uzumaki Clan symbol embedded in the spirals. As he paid more attention he was reminded of family bonds and resilience. He looked at Sasuke. “I see my clan’s symbol. What do you see?”Sasuke looked back at the seal. He noticed the patterns shifted to resemble the Uchiha crest. Inside the Uchiha crest he noticed small Uzumaki spirals. He was reminded of his ties to Naruto and their shared destiny. “I see the Uchiha Clan crest with Uzumaki spirals inside it.”Naruto’s eyes widened, “R..r..really? What do you think that means?”“I think it means that we need to work together, and find a better way to move the seal. This test is obviously not about strength in the normal sense of the word.” Sasuke replied.Naruto stepped back to look at the seal and think about what Sasuke had said. He stared at the seal, frustration bubbling under the surface. “Why does this thing have to be so heavy?” He ran a hand through his hair. “We’ve got to figure this out. What if we carry it together? Maybe that’ll work?”Sasuke gave him a skeptical look. “And why do you think that’s the answer?”Naruto hesitated. He could feel Sasuke’s gaze boring into him, and for a moment, self doubt crept in. “I don’t know, bastard,” he muttered. “It just feels right. It reminds me of when we were kids, and Kakashi sensei tested us with the bells. That was all about teamwork, wasn’t it? Maybe this is the same.” His voice softened, almost pleading. “You think so too, don’t you?” Naruto’s face pinked at the memories of that day.Sasuke crossed his arms, frowning. “…Maybe. But that’s not the only reason, is it?”Naruto looked away, the words caught in his throat. “Well… when you said that you saw both yours and my clan symbols intertwined, it got me thinking. What if we’re meant to do this together. Ya know. Because… it’s us. We’ve always done better together, haven’t we?”Sasuke smirked, catching the sheepish look on Naruto’s face. “You’re amazing, you know that?”Naruto blinked, startled by the sudden compliment. Before he could respond, Sasuke leaned forward and pressed a quick, almost shy kiss to his cheek. Naruto’s eyes widened as his face turned red.“W-what was that for, bastard?” Naruto stammered, rubbing the back of his neck, but he couldn’t keep the grin off his face.Sasuke looked away, pretending to study the seal. “Just felt like it,” he said casually, though his ears burned. “Now come on. Let’s lift this thing before you start crying about teamwork again.”Naruto laughed, the warmth in his chest making him feel lighter than he had all day. “Alright, bastard. Let’s do this.”Together they squatted to pick up the seal. Naruto attempted to take more of the load and the seal became impossibly heavy again. Naruto frowned, watching the seal dim when he tried to lift it on his own. “Ahh. What now? What's with this thing?”“Dobe, stop being an idiot,” Sasuke muttered, glaring as the seal grew heavier in Naruto’s hands. “You’re trying to do it all yourself. That’s why it’s fighting you.”Naruto huffed, shifting the weight. “Well, excuse me for trying to help. You’ve only got one arm, ya know.”Sasuke raised an eyebrow, his voice dangerously low. “So you think I’m weak, Na-ru-to?”Naruto’s eyes widened. “N…no! That’s not what I meant!” He deflated under Sasuke’s glare, rubbing the back of his neck. “Sorry, okay? I just… I don’t want you to hurt yourself.”Sasuke’s expression softened, though he kept his tone sharp. “Then stop being stupid and share the load. I’m not made of glass.”Naruto hesitated, then nodded. “Yeah, alright. Together, then?”Sasuke smirked, bending down to lift the seal with him. “Together.”“Hn. Alright let’s have another go, shall we?”As they crouched and lifted the seal together, it felt surprisingly light, almost as if it wanted to move with them. The moment they steadied it between them, the spiral came alive. A soft hum resonated from its core, and the swirling patterns inside glowed with an intense golden light.Naruto gasped. “Whoa… it’s like it knows we’re working together.”The hum grew louder, a rhythmic pulse that seemed to match the beating of their hearts. Sasuke felt a strange warmth spread through him, as if the seal was acknowledging their shared resolve. “It’s responding to us. To our bond.”Naruto grinned. “Then let’s keep going. We’ve got this!”They started to move through the corridors under the Uzukage tower, looking for the location where the Spiral needed to go. They reached a fork in the corridor they were moving through.Down the right hand corridor there was a faint glow that was steadily growing brighter. As the light brightened they saw a magnificent garden, filled with a astonishing amount of rare flowers and plants.Naruto looked at the garden in awe. The garden stretched before them like a dream come to life. Flowers shimmered in every imaginable colour. Their petals glowed faintly in the dim light. A sweet fragrance filled the air, so heady and intoxicating that Naruto swayed for a moment before steadying himself. He had never seen so many rare plants in the one place before. “Wow.” He breathed, “Ino would be in her element here. I think even Garra would be amazed at the plants here.” Naruto’s eyes scanned the garden. His gaze fell on the center of the garden, where a stone pedestal rose, seemingly crafted to hold the seal they carried. “Hey, Sasuke! What do you think? That thing in the center, it looks like it’s made for this, doesn’t it?”Sasuke looked where Naruto was indicating, “Mmm, it looks like it might be made for something like the seal.” He frowned was it really going to this easy? He shrugged his shoulders, maybe for once something would be easy for them. “How about we check it out?”They started to head towards the garden. As they moved closer, the seal pulsed violently, sending tremors through their arms. Its once steady glow flickered, dimming to a sickly hue. Naruto staggered, adjusting his grip as its weight became unbearable. “Ugh, why’s this thing fighting us so hard? What the hell! What's going on with this seal?”“Naruto,” Sasuke said, his voice low. “Look closer at the centre.” His eyes narrowed at the pedestal Naruto had pointed out. “It’s too perfect. Everything here… it’s arranged, as if someone’s waiting for us to make a mistake.” He shot Naruto a sharp glance. “You’re too trusting. How many times have we been led astray because something looked easy?” His voice was tinged with something between frustration and protectiveness. “This isn’t any different.”Naruto sighed but nodded, his grip tightening on the seal. “Yeah, I get it. It just… feels like maybe we deserve one thing to go our way, ya know?” He forced a grin, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “Guess we’ll keep going.” As soon as they headed towards the left hand corridor the seal immediately got lighter. They followed the corridor for about ten metres when Sasuke abruptly stopped. Naruto turned to Sasuke, “What's going on? Why did you stop?” Naruto frowned as he watched Sasuke staring at the wall. “Why are you staring holes into the wall, bastard?”Sasuke nodded his head towards the wall, “I’ve noticed something. Every couple of metres there are small spirals appearing momentarily on the wall.”Naruto stared at the wall, “Really! How come I can't see them?”“I only noticed them because I actually had my Sharingan activated.”“Why'd you have your Sharingan activated? What were you looking for?”“I wasn't actually looking for anything in particular, I was just looking out for anything out of the ordinary. They only appear for a few seconds and then they disappear.”“What do you think it means? Do you think it might be a trick, or message?”“Not sure, but it might be a message or maybe even an indication that we're headed in the right direction.” Sasuke frowned slightly as he scanned the wall. “The spiral doesn't appear to be getting heavier, so I’m thinking it might be an indicator. What about you? You're more in tune with Uzushio than I am. Does it feel like we're heading in the right direction?”Naruto closed his eyes for a moment and extended his senses outward. “I think you might be right, Sasuke, it does feel like we're going in the right direction….. I don't…..don't know how to explain it, but…. get a lighter….no not the right word….but not sure how to explain it…it just feels right, ya know.” He scratched the back of his head and looked at his feet.Sasuke put his head on Naruto's shoulder for a second, “It's okay, dobe. I understand. Lets keep going.”Naruto sighed and nodded his head. He looked up at Sasuke, “Thanks.” He said quietly.“Hn.”They continued moving through the corridors following the small signs. They came to a junction. Sasuke had not seen any spirals on the walls to indicate which was the right way. Naruto closed his eyes and extended his senses. “I’m not really getting anything.” He huffed, and looked down each corridor. Nothing set any direction apart from another. “I guess we’ll just have to pick one and hope we get it right.”Sasuke looked around, but he couldn't tell either, “As much as I hate to say, it looks like we'll have to rely on luck this time.”They moved down the right hand corridor. After about a dozen steps, the spiral’s weight started to increase. “Well guess this is the wrong way, huh.” Naruto said as he blew hair from his face.Sasuke just nodded and they turned around and headed back to the junction. This time they went straight ahead. After a dozen steps, Sasuke noticed a spiral appearing on the wall. He sighed, “Looks like this way is the right way, I just saw a spiral.”“Thank goodness, I was beginning to think that we were going to have guess the rest of the way.” Naruto huffed a small laugh. They continued along the path.‘The heart seeks connection, yet it fears the bond will shatter. Can you trust without doubt?’ Naruto turned his head to look at Sasuke, “Did you hear something?”Sasuke looked around and shook his head, “No did you?”“I thought I did, maybe it's just my imagination.”“Mmm, maybe. What did you hear?”“Not sure, but it sounded like someone talking. Ya know.”“Hn.”‘The heart carries weight, yet it fears it will break. Can you share its burden without shame?’ Sasuke's head snapped around to look at Naruto, “What did you say?”Naruto's brow furrowed in confusion, “I said, it sounded like someone talking. Are you…..”Sasuke shook his head, “No, I heard that, what did you say after that?”Naruto's brow furrowed even more as he stared at Sasuke, “Nothing, I didn't say anything else. What's going on, Sasuke?”Sasuke looked around them with his Sharingan, “You said you thought you heard someone talking, right?”Naruto slowly nodded his head, “Yeah.”Sasuke turned at looked at Naruto, “What exactly did you hear? Did you hear actual words, or just the sound of someone talking?”Naruto looked at the ground and chewed his lip, “I…uh…heard actual words?…. Why? Did you hear something too?”Sasuke looked at Naruto with a calculating look, their shoulders nearly brushing as they carried the spiral between them. Deep down Sasuke trusted Naruto, wanted to trust him, but the feeling that he was holding back on something gnawed at the edges of his mind. His grip on the spiral tightened momentarily. What exactly did Naruto hear? Why is he hesitating? What is he not saying? Every hesitation, every pause from Naruto was magnified in his mind, feeding the nagging suspicion that there was more to this than either of them was letting on. Even as they moved in sync, Sasuke's thoughts spiraled. Was it his own insecurity clouding his judgment, or was there truly something the other wasn’t saying?“Hn, no. Come on let’s keep going, dobe.”Naruto opened his mouth, then snapped it shut, his frustration palpable. He sighed, shoving his discomfort down as they moved forward. The tension between them thickened with every step, each unspoken word weighing heavier than the spiral. Naruto glanced at Sasuke several times, as if about to speak, but said nothing. Sasuke kept his eyes forward, pretending not to notice, though the silence gnawed at him. After half an hour the spiral started to grow heavy again. Sasuke looked around, but the signs were still visible. “Strange. We're still headed in the right direction, according to the signs we've been following.”Naruto cast his senses out, but the pull he felt was the same as the signs Sasuke was seeing. “From what I can sense, we're still going the right way. I don't know what's going on, but it's getting heavier but the second.”The spiral suddenly became so heavy they couldn't lift it and had to put it down. “Now what?” Naruto growled.‘The Spiral tests more than strength. Its weight can only be borne by those who share the burden, not just with their bodies, but with their hearts.’ The words seemed to press into the silence, heavy with meaning. Naruto glanced at Sasuke, and suddenly, the seal felt like more than just an object, it felt like a reflection of everything unsaid between them.Naruto glanced at Sasuke. “You heard that, right?”Sasuke nodded, frowning. “Yeah. What are we missing?”Naruto shifted uneasily, staring at his hands. “Maybe….maybe it’s because we’re not being completely honest with each other,” he muttered, eyes fixed on the floor.Sasuke’s glare sharpened. “Not honest? What aren’t you telling me?”Naruto shrugged his shoulders, “I…uh..well….are you getting tired of being here with me?”Sasuke's eyes widened and his head jerked back slightly, “What? Why are you asking me that?” Sasuke closed his eyes and concentrated on his breathing for a moment. He opened his eyes and turned to fully face Naruto. “Okay, what did you hear back there?”Naruto hesitated, rubbing the back of his head. “I heard, The heart seeks connection, yet it fears the bond will shatter. Can you trust without doubt? And I guess it made me think, I do trust you, but….”He trailed off, looking away.“But what?” Sasuke pressed, his gaze sharp.Naruto sighed. “My insecurities, they don’t let up, ya know? Sorry.”Sasuke reached out, taking Naruto’s hand. “There’s nothing to be sorry for. We both carry baggage, dobe. But we’re moving forward. Together.”Sasuke hesitated. He hated how easily Naruto could admit his fears, even if it was awkward and clumsy. For Sasuke, vulnerability felt like a crack in the armour, one he wasn’t sure he could afford. When he looked at Naruto, saw the hope and hurt in his eyes. Sasuke felt the weight of silence was heavier than the spiral itself. He sighed, “I heard something different. I heard, The heart carries weight, yet it fears it will break. Can you share its burden without shame? And I guess I started thinking that don't really need me here and I'll just keep bringing you down or keep hurting you.” He leaned forward and rested his forehead against Naruto’s, he felt the tension in his chest ease. The spiral at their feet seemed to pulse in response, its faint glow softening. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to remind him that they were stronger together than apart. They stood like for a few minutes. “I guess we should try to be more honest with each other about our insecurities. If we can't trust each other, how will we be able to rebuild Uzushio and not make the past's mistakes.” Sasuke said as he lifted his head enough to kiss Naruto's forehead.Naruto nodded and gave Sasuke a small smile. “Okay, let's see if we can lift the spiral again.”When they crouched to lift the spiral, it felt impossibly light in their hands. Its glow brightened, casting a warm light around them. Naruto laughed softly, the sound breaking the lingering tension. “See? Told ya we’d figure it out.”Sasuke smirked. “Hn. Took you long enough.” Although the words carried no bite, only quiet relief. They continued to follow the corridors beneath Uzushio for what felt like another half hour. They noticed that the spiral started to glow brighter. As they continued they noticed that the glow preceded them creating an illuminated path. They entered a large cavernous room. In the centre of the room was an enormous pulsing seal, but it looked incomplete.“Look, the missing piece exactly matches the spiral.” Naruto stated with excitement. Finally they had found the spiral's heart.Uzushio’s voice echoed the the room, “The heart lies not in power, but in unity. Place the Spiral, and let your bond complete the circle.”Naruto looked at the seal, “I… I don't know how to explain this…but I think we need to use our chakra to place the spiral into the seal.”Sasuke looked at Naruto, “Did you hear something, or is it just a feeling?”“A feeling. Heh, just …. I can't… I don't know how I know, but it feels right, ya know.” Naruto said quietly, his eyes begging Sasuke to believe him.“You're gut feelings haven't steered us wrong so far, so I am inclined to believe that you are right.” Sasuke said. “Okay, how do you want to do this?”Naruto stared at the massive seal etched into the ground pulsing faintly beneath their feet, its intricate patterns radiating outward in endless waves. “How about we just try to put the spiral in place first and see what happens?”Sasuke shrugged his shoulders and moved forward with Naruto to do just that. As they tried to align the spiral into its intended position, it resisted. They were pushed back as if they had been shoved.“Okay it doesn't seem to like that, huh.” Naruto muttered. “How about we try to push a little chakra into the spiral as we try to place it? What do think, Sasuke?”Sasuke nodded, “As good an idea, as any.”As they attempted to place the spiral, they were again repulsed. “Feels like it’s trying to punch me in the gut every time I push chakra into it. Ya know.” Naruto complained.Sasuke activated his Sharingan and analysed the flow of chakra. He knelt, tracing his fingers over the edge of the seal. “I don't think it's just about pushing our chakra in. I think needs to be balanced. Our chakra isn’t harmonised. I don't think the seal will accept it unless it is.”Naruto blinked. “Harmonised? What’s that mean? You saying my chakra’s out of tune or something?”Sasuke rolled his eyes. “No, dobe. I’m saying your chakra's loud. It’s like trying to play a duet with someone banging on the drums while you’re trying to play the flute.”Naruto frowned. “Hey! My chakra isn’t loud.”Sasuke shot him a flat look. “It is. But if you’d stop talking for two seconds, I’ll explain how to fix it.”Naruto huffed but fell silent, crossing his arms as Sasuke continued.“Imagine the spiral being a bit like a tuning fork. It amplifies both of our chakra signatures, but unless we’re in sync, it’ll just keep rejecting us. We need to align our chakra flow perfectly. If one of us is even a little off, the seal will push us away.”Naruto scratched his head, his face scrunched in thought. “So we gotta, what, match each other’s rhythm? Like synchronised swimming?”Sasuke laughed. “Something like that. Now focus. Start slowly channeling your chakra, and I’ll adjust mine to match.”Naruto nodded and took a deep breath. He placed his hands on the spiral and let his chakra flow out, golden and warm. The spiral responded with a faint hum, but the energy still felt unsteady, like a boat rocking in a storm.Sasuke closed his eyes, placing his hand next to Naruto’s. His chakra was sharp and cool, a steady stream of electric blue energy. As it joined Naruto’s, the spiral flared briefly, then faltered, the seal beneath them flashing red in warning.“Come on, Naruto, focus.” Sasuke snapped. “You need to stop your chakra from surging. Stop thinking so hard and just breathe.”“I am breathing, bastard!” Naruto shot back, though his grip tightened. “Maybe you’re the one throwing it off! Ya know.”“Dobe, you’re the one who can’t stay steady for five seconds.”They glared at each other, but the spiral pulsed between them, the pressure building until it forced them apart. Both stumbled back, panting.“This isn’t working,” Sasuke muttered, running a hand through his hair. “We’re too out of sync.”Naruto stared at the spiral, frustration etched on his face. Then his expression softened. “Maybe …maybe we’re going about this wrong.”Sasuke raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”Naruto grinned. “You said it’s about being in sync, right? Not just our chakra, but us as well.”Sasuke frowned, but he didn’t interrupt.“When we fight together, we don’t think about it, ya know? We just move. We trust each other, completely. Maybe that’s what we need to do here. Stop overthinking it and just… feel it out.”Sasuke considered this, then gave a small nod. “Fine. Let’s try it your way.”They knelt again, both placing their hands on the spiral. This time, they didn’t rush. Naruto closed his eyes, letting his chakra flow naturally, unrestrained and calm. Sasuke matched his pace, his own chakra weaving into Naruto’s like threads forming a single strand. The spiral began to glow brighter. The seal beneath them pulsed in time with their synchronised chakra, its patterns shifting as if alive.Naruto grinned. “It’s working!”“Don’t lose focus,” Sasuke warned, though there was a note of pride in his voice. The spiral slowly lowered into place, locking into the centre of the seal with a resounding thrum. A wave of energy rippled outward, and the entire room lit up with golden and blue light. The seal stabilised, its intricate patterns shining brightly before dimming to a faint glow.Naruto leaned back, letting out a relieved laugh. “See? Told you we just had to trust each other!”Sasuke smirked faintly. “Hn. Not bad, dobe.”Naruto shot him a playful glare. “Oh, come on, you know I carried us through that.”“Whatever helps you sleep at night,” Sasuke replied, standing and offering Naruto a hand.Naruto took it, pulling himself up. For a moment, they stood there, the tension from earlier dissipating as they exchanged a brief, knowing look.Suddenly the walls around the room lit up with images. Some of the images they recognised from the visions they had been shown if Uzushio’s destruction. Others, though were new to them. They were obviously of Uzushio, but at different times in her history. They saw images of Uzushio in her prime, vibrant teaming with life. They saw Uzushio as a new village, the Uzumaki placing seals and building houses. They saw images of the lead up to the invasion, the fear but also resolve of her people. They stood there in awe of what they were seeing. Tears streamed down Naruto's face as he watched scenes from Uzushio's past. It was such as beautiful place.Sasuke felt humbled to be allowed to witness these scenes. His resolve to help Naruto rebuild Uzushio strengthened.Uzushio reappeared before them. She smiled at them, genuine affection displayed on her face. “The Spiral symbolizes connection, endurance, and the unbreakable bonds of the Uzumaki. You have proven that such bonds exist between you, transcending even the weight of the past. You carry Uzushio’s legacy not in strength alone, but in heart and faith.”With that the images stopped and the room disappeared. Naruto found themselves in a gorgeous garden. Similar to the garden they had seen during the trial. They felt a weight lift. They had passed the trial of resilience. Their bond was stronger than ever.“You have proven that resilience is not borne of solitude, but in bonds forged through trust and shared burdens. You carry the Uzumaki spirit together.” Uzushio said as she gestured towards them. They both felt a small sting on their palms. They now both had a spiral tattoo in the centre of their palms. “This will mark you, Naruto, as the Uzumaki heir. And you, Sasuke, as a revered ally of Uzushio. The future of Uzushio is in your hands, however you chose to rebuild.”She turned to Naruto, “You have completed the trial of resilience. There are some rewards that I will bestow upon you. You will find that your chakra control has improved. You will now be able to perform jutsu that requires more control.”Naruto's face split into wide grin. He was so excited he was practically vibrating. “I…that…does that mean I can perform Dad’s Hiraishin technique?”Uzushio merely smiled and continued. She gestured and a scroll appeared. She handed it to Naruto, “This scroll will allow you unlock several seals that the Uzumaki were renowned for. As a result of completing the trial, your stamina is greatly increased and you should find that you will heal faster than before. Your resistance to genjutsu has strengthened and you also have a greater resistance to any type of chakra disruption. You now know how to synchronise your chakra, which you will find helpful for some of the seals in the scroll.” She paused to allow Naruto to take in everything.Uzushio turned and faced Sasuke. “Sasuke, you also completed the trial of resilience. You have proven yourself to be a valuable ally, just like many Uchiha in the past did.”Sasuke's eyes widened and his mouth dropped open. He struggled to comprehend what he had just been told. “Uchiha in the past? You mean the Uchiha clan had ties to the Uzumaki before?”Uzushio smiled serenely, “You bear the legacy of the guardians who stood with us. For generations before the invasion, a branch of the Uchiha had stood with the Uzumaki. They were the Guardians of the Spiral.”“Guardians of the Spiral, what does that mean?”Uzushio inclined her head, “They were the protectors of our most sacred relics and sites.”Sasuke was stunned. He never expected that his clan had a history here in Uzushio. Maybe he hadn't lost everything at all. Maybe he could honour his clan after all. “I never expected this,”he murmured. “The Uchiha, they were part of this place.”Uzushio nodded in agreement with what he said, “Sasuke you also gained some rewards for completing the trial. Like Naruto, you can now synchronise your chakra. Your stamina has also improved and you will also find that you will heal faster than before.” Uzushio produced another scroll and gave this one to Sasuke. “This scroll will show you how to enhance your Sharingan to be able to trace seals onto surfaces or instantly activate them.”Sasuke bowed as he took the scroll from Uzushio, “I am honoured that you have put so much trust in me.”Uzushio smiled at him. She then addressed both of them. Behind me is the Uzumaki library. Inside are numerous scrolls detailing everyday life in Uzushio as well the seals that were used on a daily basis. You both now have acces to this knowledge. Be aware though that until you complete the other trials, there will be scrolls and artefacts that will not respond to you.” She turned and beckoned them to follow her.The library was massive. They were unable to see the ceiling and the rows seemed to go on forever. “Does this room seem too big fir the building it is in?” Naruto asked looking around in awe.“Hn. It does.”Uzushio’s smile widened, “The door is a seal. It hides the library and keeps everything safe and contained. It also keeps the library in a different dimension.” She continued to walk through the library until she came to an area where the were lots of pedestals. On each pedestal was an item. Behind the pedestals is an intricate mural that shows Uchiha and Uzumaki shinobi standing together. The Uchiha fan and Uzumaki spiral are intertwined. One figure, an Uchiha with a Sharingan, is activating a seal inscribed by an Uzumaki, their powers blending seamlessly. Beneath the mural, an inscription read:‘To those who share the burden of trust, these bonds endure beyond time.’ The Uchiha and Uzumaki used to fight together.” Naruto breathed in awe.Uzushio gestured to the items, “These are the most sacred relics of the Uzumaki.” She moved to a pedestal that held a katana with a black blade, etched with Uzumaki seals along the hilt and guard. “This is The Uchiha Blade.” She picked it up and handed it to Sasuke.Sasuke took the katana reverently, his fingers brushing over the etched seals. The blade felt balanced, alive, humming faintly in response to his chakra. “This was made for the Uchiha,” he murmured, awe clear in his voice. “By the Uzumaki?”Uzushio smiled. “Your ancestors believed in harmony, not division. The Uchiha and Uzumaki forged this bond through shared trust, a bond I see reflected in you now.” She continued, “The blade will react to your Sharingan. It can also cut through seals and barriers as well temporarily disabling them.”“You said it will react to my Sharingan. How will it do that?” Sasuke asked quietly.“It will allow you to enhance your strikes with genjutsu infused chakra.” Uzushio explained.Sasuke was speechless. A blade designed specifically for Uchiha Kekkai Genkai, but not made by the Uchiha. He bowed deeply to Uzushio again, unsure how else he could show his gratitude.Uzushio acknowledged his respect. She moved to another pedestal and removed a pair of gauntlets. She turned to Naruto, “These are Seal Weaving Gauntlets they are designed to enhance your ability to draw or activate seals quickly, especially during a battle.” She handed them to Naruto. Naruto turned them over studying the seals carved into them. He could feel the chakra thrumming through them. He bowed his thanks. She then picked up two pendants that had the Uzumaki spiral and the Uchiha fan entwined together. “These pendants will store chakra for emergencies as well as resonate with any nearby Uzumaki seals.” She handed them to Naruto and Sasuke, who both bowed deeply, stunned by the gifts she was giving them. “You now will be able to access this library whenever you wish, but remember not all knowledge here will be accessible until you have completed the other trials. When you are ready to complete those trials, return to the room where this trial began.” She bowed to them and disappeared.Naruto looked around at the library stretching before him. Maybe we can really rebuild Uzushio. We have access to all the information about how she was originally created. He looked over at Sasuke, who was still studying The Uchiha Blade. He could count on one hand the number of times he has seen Sasuke truly in awe of something. He smiled as he watched him. “What do you think Sasuke, time to call it quits for the day? I don't know about you, but I'm starving.” His stomach grumbling on cue.Sasuke laughed, “Yeah, all right. I guess we should go and rest and decide if we're doing the other trials.”He walked over to Naruto, took his hand and led him out of the library. They made their way back to the rooms they were using as living quarters and made themselves dinner.Over dinner they discussed everything they had learned during the trial. “At first I was shocked to discover that there was Uchiha here before Uzushio was destroyed, but after really thinking about it, it makes sense, ya know.” Naruto said.“How so?”“Well, even though we had a rocky start, we managed to learn to work together pretty quickly. Now that I think about it, it's almost like we were born to fight together.” Naruto paused, then asked softly, “What do you think?”“Mmm, I think you might actually be onto something there, Naruto. I mean our mothers were friends. Who's to say that they didn't already know about this alliance. Maybe they kept it quiet out of fear of retribution. Especially if they had any suspicion about the way Uzushio was destroyed.”Naruto stretched out on the floor, staring at the ceiling. “It’s kinda scary, ya know? Thinking we could actually rebuild Uzushio.”Sasuke leaned back, studying the Uchiha Blade resting beside him. “It’s not scary. It’s necessary. You’ve always been about protecting people, Naruto. This is just the next step.”Naruto turned to him, a soft smile on his face. “And you’ll be there, right? To keep me from screwing it up?”Sasuke smirked. “Someone has to.”
