He’s sat in her daddy’s chair, halo’d by the light of the window from where she looks up at him. Her sleeves are rolled up and she’s crouched on her knees before him and it feels wrong. She’s the perfect picture of subservience and obedience. Everything she’d been raised to be.She’s more mad than she’s ever been.She’s not gentle with his feet the way she should be, but in her heart she knows that this isn’t normal. This isn’t a caring replica of Jesus washing his disciples feet. There’s no love in this act- only punishment and pettiness. There’s no love at all where Garrets involved. In this moment she realizes there really never has been.
Her daddy looms in the other room and she can’t help but feel anger toward him too. Anger for what he’d said to Garret about getting a firm handle on her. Anger for not learning his lesson and letting his pride get in the way of what should be. Anger for Augie. Anger for herself too. Her anger builds easily. Anytime she looks up he’s staring right back down at her- righteous. The smug look combined with his nonchalant posture makes him look cocky. Prideful. She detests it.When she finishes up he leans down into her space, eyes her up and down. He tangles a hand into her hair and presses his finger into the skin of her cheek almost painfully.
“Things are gone’ be real different from here on out.” He grins down at her, like this has absolved him for all the pain he’d caused. His Colgate smile had once been interesting. Now it just makes her seethe.Shes glad she never drank the love from his lips, it would’ve been sour anyway.
