The sun was still shining, sky orange over the blue green water. The clouds were a grey swirl - part of the divine painting. His pants cuffs were pulled up halfway around his calves, rolled double. The sand was pressed wet and gritty and still a little warm between his toes; a contrast to the dry still hot grains between his fingers. He stared out at the sea like something out of a museum.           “Are you sure about this?” She asked, rolling a coin between her fingers. The shiny silver vivid against dark skin.           “I’ve seen the future.” His voice was resigned, “I will never be who I shall be in that vision.”           “I love you.” She said, words unnatural in her throat. He laughed bitterly, not for the first time.           “And I you, as much as creatures such as us love.”           “Alright. I’ll go after you.” She said, knowing he wouldn’t believe her or want that.           “There’s no reason for that. You have the way back.” He nodded at the coin.           “Then this is goodbye.” She said kneeling in front of him, meeting his dark eyes.           “Yes.” He looked at her steadily, and brushed her face with the back knuckle of one otherwise sand covered finger. She refused to acknowledge the clear droplet on the knuckle. With the hand not holding a coin, she brought the knife forward.           “How?” She asked, wanting him to say not at all, to back up from the reality – knowing he would not.           “However, you like. I trust you. Besides…” he smiled faintly, “hasn’t every demon dreamed of how they’d kill their king?”           She pushed the blade forward more, the tip hitting a spot on his exposed chest. He didn’t flinch.           “I won’t see you again.” She warned him.           “Rather the point” He said cheekily and put his hand over her wrist, “I can do it myself Mazikeen, if it is too much.”           She smiled at him, glamour falling and pushed the knife up at an angle through his chest into his heart. A flicker of surprise flashed through his dark eyes and she brushed her lips against his forehead ignoring the drop of blood she saw in the corner of his mouth.           “Thank you.” He breathed and slumped against her. She sat for a while, holding his corpse against her. He was more dignified than a human. No voided bowels, no weird smells. She held him until the warmth had left him, then set him gently on the sand. His legs were still spread with her kneeling between them. She got up and closed them and laid down on the sand next to him. With one hand she curled dark human fingers around his, and with the other rotted demonic she plunged the dagger into her own chest.
