Chapter 1As we settled down, the movie flicked on. A few seconds later, something jumped out on the screen and we all jumped. Laughing, we focused back onto the screen. After a little while, a flash lit up our faces as another person jumped out with a knife. We screamed in unison, then burst out laughing. I stretched my legs down into the bottom of my bed and sighed. I couldn't sleep again. Not because of the movie we watched but because of a familiar feeling. The feeling of being watched... I turned my head to the clock and saw that it read 01:17 AM. Great. Yet another terrible nights sleep. I think to myself. I lay flat on my back, just wanting it to be morning already. Something shifted in my room. I must've dozed off because I didn't hear anyone come in to my room. Looking towards my door, something glints silver in the small sliver of moonlight shining through the curtains. I can see the rough outline of a person, but I can't identify them. A soft sound of something dripping onto the floor filled my ears. I didn't have an en suite so it wasn't a tap, and I don't have a spilled glass around either. The sound of a soft shuffle moved from my door to the other side of my room. I saw the figure pick something up. It was my music box, the one I got when we went to Cairns. The handle must've brushed against something because it played a short note. Everything seemed to freeze. Something was making my leg itch, so I automatically reached down and scratched my leg. The silver object glinted again, though this time I could see the shape of it. Is that a knife? Fully awake now, I take a sharp breath in, regretting scratching my leg. As though all done in one movement, the figure shoved the music box into his pocket and then grabbed something from the pocket next to it. He lifted his hand and pointed it at my face. I flinched but then realised that he wasn't holding the knife. He blew something into my face, a shiny powder that looked like moon dust, then everything went black. I expected my head to be throbbing when I woke up because I couldn't really remember anything. I thought that I might have been bashed over the head. Lifting my hand to my head to check, I rubbed down my hair. Looking at my hand afterwards, I see a small speck of silvery powder. I gasp inside. So I wasn't dreaming? I let my eyes drift across the room until they settle on my alarm clock. 05:39 AM. It had been over two hours that I'd been unconscious. Pushing the duvet off of me, I swung my legs over the side of my bed and sat on the edge of the mattress. I wasn't dizzy either. Surprisingly... I stood up and tiptoed down the hallway, careful not to wake my brother. I headed into my parents room and around the other side of the bed. Reaching out my hand I tapped my mother gently on the shoulder. She rolled over a little to show that she had felt me and hummed sleepily. "I can't sleep." I whisper to her, my breath blowing her short hair a little. She moves her arm, as though waving me off. "It was just the movie. Go back to bed..."I shake my head and roll my eyes, even though it's dark and I'm the only one who knows I did that. "It wasn't." I think for a moment if it's wise to tell her then decide it would be stupid not to. "There was someone in my room."
