The lights in the grand ballroom flickered, casting shadows that danced just as wildly as the attendees themselves. The hum of excitement hung in the air, a heady mixture of fine Energon and whispered secrets swirling beneath the elegance of Iacon’s finest. A tango’s sharp, intoxicating beat reverberated through the floor, its rhythm demanding attention.
Prowl and Jazz, dressed in polished disguises, were buried among the crowd, their optics scanning for the silver mech—their target, a notorious info-broker.
The most elusive info-broker on Cybertron
. They were close. Very close.
Jazz, ever the charismatic frontman of the duo, leaned in closer to Prowl, his voice just audible over the music. "You know, Prowl, if you wanna blend in, you're gonna have to stop looking so uptight. Loosen up a little."
Prowl’s mouth was set in a thin line, his optic ridges furrowed in concentration. "We’re not here for fun, Jazz. We need to—"
Before he could finish, the crowd surged, drawing them into its swirling mass. Dancers moved with synchronized intensity, pedes shuffling in sharp, precise steps. The beat of a tango pulsed through them, leaving no room for hesitation. And then, without warning, Prowl found himself spinning into the thick of the dance floor.
“What—Jazz!” His protest was cut short as the fast-paced music swept him away, forcing his movements into the beat of the tango.
Jazz, much more at ease, was beside him in an instant. “Looks like we’re dancing, Prowl,” he quipped, grabbing his servo and pulling him into step. “And you better keep up!”
Prowl stumbled at first, his circuits straining to match the quick, staccato rhythm, but Jazz was already in the groove. He twirled Prowl with ease, expertly guiding him through a series of rapid pivots and dips, all while keeping a sharp optic on their surroundings.
“This is ridiculous,” Prowl muttered, fighting to maintain his composure as Jazz spun him again. His body, typically rigid and calculated, was forced to adjust to the fluid movements. The tango’s demand for sharp, controlled motions was a far cry from the disciplined, battle-ready stance he was used to.
But as they moved, something clicked. His limbs, at first uncooperative, began to mirror Jazz’s fluidity. Step, pivot, twist. The rhythm was relentless, the dance floor an obstacle course of shifting mechs. They moved in sync, partners in an unexpected dance.
Jazz’s optics darted toward the far end of the room, locking onto the tall, silver mech—sharp-edged and gleaming under the low lights—hovering at the edge of the dance floor. “There. We’ve got him.”
Prowl barely had time to react before the song's tempo accelerated. In a split second, the crowd surged again, and Jazz was ripped from his side.
“What the—” Prowl was forced into another spin, only to find himself face to face with the target: the silver mech they had been hunting.
"Well, well," the mech’s voice was smooth, a smirk playing across his faceplates. "Looks like I’ve found myself a new partner."
Prowl tried to break away, but the grip was firm, iron-clad. Every movement the silver mech made was calculated, a master of the tango’s complex rhythm. His tall frame towered over Prowl, and as they moved, it became painfully clear that this was more than just a dance—it was a battle for control.
Prowl's systems flared, each dip and twirl pressing him tighter into the mech’s hold. He struggled to keep his composure, his optics darting around the room for an escape. But the mech was relentless, expertly maneuvering him through the crowd with a forceful grace that made Prowl feel trapped.
The silver mech leaned in closer, his optics gleaming with an unsettling confidence. “You’re not going anywhere, Autobot. Not until I’ve had my fun.”
Prowl’s servos clenched, resisting the urge to tear free and blow their cover. He couldn’t make a scene, not in the middle of this elite crowd, but every fiber of his being screamed for an exit. The tango’s steps became a cage, each one locking him further into the mech’s grasp.
Suddenly, in the midst of a rapid spin, Jazz reappeared at Prowl’s side, cutting in with a lightning-quick step. “Mind if I steal him back?” Jazz grinned, sliding between Prowl and the broker with practiced ease, his movements quick and deft.
But the silver mech wasn’t about to give up that easily. As Jazz pulled Prowl away, the broker surged forward, catching Prowl’s free servo and pulling him back into his orbit. In an instant, Prowl was caught in a brutal tug-of-war, the music’s tempo reflecting the intensifying struggle.
The crowd pressed in, their dance continuing, unaware of the fierce battle for control happening at its center. The tango reached its crescendo, the pounding beat driving the mechs to move faster, sharper.
Prowl was spun again—first into Jazz’s arms, then back into the broker’s. Each transition was seamless, but to Prowl, it felt like being yanked between two worlds. The silver mech’s grip was possessive, his movements aggressive, each step designed to keep Prowl off-balance. Jazz, in contrast, was swift and agile, his steps a counterbalance to the broker’s brute force.
“You good, Prowl?” Jazz’s voice was tense, his usually carefree demeanor replaced by a seriousness that matched the situation. He spun Prowl out, only for the broker to catch him again.
“Not exactly,” Prowl gritted out, the tension in his voice mirroring the strain in his body. The broker’s claws were digging in, each motion forcing Prowl closer, his towering frame dominating the space around them. Every twist, every sharp pivot was meant to keep Prowl under control. It was a game of precision, and the broker was winning.
Jazz lunged forward again, a quick maneuver bringing him face to face with the silver mech. “Back off,” he growled, his optics narrowing.
The broker’s smirk widened. “If you insist,” he said, releasing Prowl—but not without a final, forceful spin that sent Prowl stumbling into Jazz’s arms.
The music roared, the final chords of the tango reaching their peak as Jazz caught Prowl, pulling him close. They staggered into the final steps together, their movements finally slowing as the song faded into silence.
Prowl's vents heaved as he steadied himself, his optics locking onto the silver mech, who was already melting back into the crowd, his form vanishing among the glittering bodies.
“We’re not done with him,” Jazz muttered, his grip tightening on Prowl’s arm.
Prowl remained silent, still working to regain his equilibrium.
“We’ll get him next time,” Jazz said, his optics scanning the crowd for any sign of the broker.
Prowl nodded, trying to steady his rattled systems. “Next time.” he agreed, his voice tight with lingering frustration.
