Every day was terribly average for Yeonjun. Monday through Friday, he walked through the same Steele high school doors. Sometimes, he'd see his friends, which was nice, but was that really it? Every day, just repeating the same thing? School, home, school, home again and again. He was waiting for a moment for something new to happen. It didn't have to be exciting, just new.Today was no different, He walked through the front doors of his school and aimed straight for his locker. He barely looked up as he walked through crowds of people his age. His backpack felt heavier than usual but he could finally put it down in his locker. Next to his was the locker of his best friend, Choi Soobin. Since they had the same last name, everything was assigned in alphabetical order, and that placed them next to each other. It was a good thing they were so close. Soobin was less blunt than Yeonjun but was always friendly, even if he was a little shy. He was taller than most people at their school so Yeonjun could always see him coming in his direction down the hall. Soobin arrives only a few minutes after Yeonjun, but Yeonjun is still busy putting his books away.“Hey,” Soobin interrupts, peeking around his open locker, “have a good weekend?”Yeonjun didn't have a good weekend, but he wouldn't tell him that. His parents were fighting almost nonstop and he hid himself in his room almost the entire time. Only leaving for the restroom and meals. It's not like this was a rare occurrence, Yeonjuns parents never had a civil conversation for more than five minutes and he would always be caught in the crossfire. This made him bury all his sadness. In his mind burying it was better than confronting the two people that would make it worse.“Yeah, it was fine, normal. How about you?” He didn't look up from his own locker while responding, but he felt Soobin looming over. The uninteresting answer didn't seem to bother him much so he just continued and talked about his own weekend.“Good, good, me and Kai played LOL for most of it,” He let out a snarky laugh telling Yeonjun he was proud of his playing skills. “So if Kai seems peeved, my bad.”Yeonjun smiles a little at his friends’ laugh and closes his locker door, now fully facing Soobin. He waits for him to finish grabbing his materials for their first period.“I haven’t heard from Taehyun this weekend, is he all good?” As Soobin continues unpacking he talks from behind the door.“Ms. Davis asked him to show a new student in our class around today, so maybe he was prepping for that.”“Oh I see, well I guess that's his job as class president,”Yeonjun thinks about the possibilities of what the new student could be like. It was Taehyun’s job to welcome them to the school, but that didn't mean they were all going to be friends with them. However, the new student would be in all of their first period, so it's likely they'd see him a lot. Yeonjun hoped that he was a chill person, maybe even interesting.Soobin finished getting his first-period materials, and both he and Yeonjun walked down the hall together to their class. While mid-conversation, they see Taehyun at the end of the hall talking and walking with a slightly taller pale boy. When Yeonjun saw him for the first time the feelings that arose were unclear. His hair was black and shoulder length, it covered his eyes that he could only see for a split second. He walked down the hall in long cargo pants and a black sweater, looking down at a slow pace. Yeonjun had never seen someone that made him feel like that based on first sight alone. He and Soobin were quickly approaching Taehyun and the other boy and he couldn't sort through his thoughts fast enough.“Oh, that must be him!”Soobin whispered excitingly to Yeonjun, nudging him while pointing in their direction. Yeonjun didn't say anything, he just watched as they approached them. Now the two pairs of boys were standing in front of each other right in front of their first-period classroom.“Hey guys! This is Choi Beomgyu, I’m showing him around today and hell be in our class, so be nice.”Taehyun gave a wide smile and pointed to Beomgyu, who was smiling nervously next to him.“Hi, Im Choi Beomgyu.”He gave a small bow still looking a little awkward. Yeonjun was lost in thought. They had the same last name as him and Soobin, which meant he’d be grouped with them often. He thought about how he was so much prettier up close. Beomgyus's hair framed his face perfectly and his skin looked soft and delicate. He looked like he would enjoy little beauties in life like stars and small bugs, and that he would be down to earth.Suddenly Soobin was nudging Yeonjun hard and clearing his throat, “Um buddy, say your name don't just stare,”He laughed trying to avoid awkward feelings that were brewing. Yeonjun didn't realize he was so lost in thought he didn't even hear Soobin introduce himself.“Right, I'm Choi Yeonjun. Nice to meet you, man.”He hoped it didn't come off as dismissive to call him ‘man’ when they just met. Internally Yeonjun had too many thoughts and feelings rushing through him that he could barely focus on the conversation he was in. Regardless of Yeonjun’s nerves, Beomgyu suddenly started to chuckle at their interaction and looked less nervous. Yeonjun was in awe, Beomgyu had revealed his wide smile that made his eyes sparkle, his skin became dusty pink, and his whisker dimples made Yeonjun’s heart beat faster.“We three have the same last name, how silly.” He laughed again, and all the boys looked at him. Soon, Soobin and Taehyun laughed as well and started to talk about going inside to meet up with Kai, but Yeonjun couldn't take his eyes off Beomgyu’s smile. Why was he feeling like this? His heart beat so fast, and his face got warm much too quickly. This was it, the person who could be Yeonjun’s beautiful little hope.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

When they entered the classroom, everyone headed to their desks except for Beomgyu, who waited near the front entrance. Clearly he didn't have an assigned seat yet, and the teacher hadn't arrived, so he just stood confused. Even though Taehyun was supposed to be leading him around for his first day, he was too distracted by seeing Kai again after the weekend.“Kai! I heard Soobin beat you all weekend in LOL!” he started teasing him and Kai just rolled his eyes in response. He gives Soobin a death stare and slowly heads in his direction.“Hey Beanpole, quit going around telling people you're better than me.” he jokes while Soobin is still settling into his desk.“Pfff beanpole? Soon enough you won't have the right to say that.” Soobin makes a gesture with his hand near the top of his own head and then gestures to Kai’s, insinuating they're almost the same height. The three boys continue joking around while Beomgyu remains near the front door, lost. Yeonjun who was originally too busy putting his own things into his desk finally noticed that Beomgyu didn't know where to sit and Taehyun had left him to his own devices. He thinks to himself wondering if he should help him out. He’d offer the seen next to him but usually Kai sits there, Taehyun and Soobin seated on the other side of the room. Yeonjun wasn't exactly sure which seats were open and didn't want to just awkwardly offer him one.“Hey um, Beomg-” Yeonjun started finally getting the nerves to call out to him and then was interrupted by Taehyun finally remembering he had an entire 18-year-old to look after.“Ah Beomgyu! Here here follow me.” He walked away from Kai and Soobin who were still bickering, and headed towards Beomgyu who looked relieved to be thought of again. Beomgyu chuckled a little shyly as he followed Taehyun in Yeonjun’s direction. Yeonjun started to get nervous since he didn't know why they were walking toward him until Taehyun pointed at the desk in from of Yeonjuns.“This seat is the only one open so you can have it. Good?” He smiled at him before moving out of the way so that Beomgyu could get to his seat. Beomgyu just nodded in response, just happy to finally sit down.“I'll be on the other side if you need anything,” Taehyun said before skipping off back to his conversation with Kai and Soobin.Beomgyu started to settle at his desk pulling out a black college-ruled notebook, pencils, and the book that the rest of the class had been reading that semester. Yeonjun watched him, honestly impressed by how prepared he was for a class he had never been in, Yeonjun himself didn't even have the book, and he’d been in the class for the past two months. Then after a few moments, Beomgyu pulled out a smaller black moleskin notebook that looked a bit worn down. This one he didn't set out on his desk like the other materials, he just kept it in his lap holding it.
It wasn't any of Yeonjun’s business what was in the notebook, clearly, it was personal, but he wanted to know so badly. He never usually cared so much about the details of people around him. Of course, he cared about his friends and their lives but they didn't have secrets. Or at least secrets he wanted to know. This was a different feeling. He found himself lost in thought again just staring at Beomgyu and the small notebook. He pulled himself out of it and focused back on his own space, just waiting for the teacher to arrive.“Yeonjun?” Beomgyus's voice was so soft that Yeonjun barely heard it but when he looked up he saw that Beomgyu was turned around in his chair looking at him. He was a little surprised but tried not to wait too long before responding.“Um yeah? What's up?” He always tried to play it cool but never knew if it came off that way to other people. Beomgyu shuffled in his seat some before speaking again.“Taehyun has been really helpful, but he couldn't answer me on what the bus system was like, do you know?” He looked at Yeonjun with shining eyes ready to listen to him.Yeonjun didn't take the bus so he wasn't sure about the bus system either. He drove his old rusted car to and from school and didn’t think of much else. Kai and Soobin usually walked home together and Taehyun was picked up by a parent every day. Since he and none of his friends took the bus, it wasn't a thing he needed to know about.“I'm not really sure either sorry about that.” Yeonjun rubbed the back of his head knowing it was a disappointing answer to be given. Beomgyu sighed and started fidgeting with his fingers. He traced the edge of his little notebook and repeated the same path multiple times before looking back at Yeonjun.“Oh well! I guess I'll have to find my own way there!” he gave a big smile and his eyes smiled with him. Yeonjun couldn't tell if he was really good at putting on a face or was just that happy of a person. Without thinking Yeonjun continued to pry.“Where do you need to go?” He yelled at himself internally for asking that, now Beomgyu would definitely think he was a creep. They just met and he's basically asking the guy where he lives. This wasn't like Yeonjun at all and he knew it. Beomgyu looked at him no longer with a wide smile but now intrigued that he pried further.“Well, I live near that little convenience store on 34th Street. It's a bit far to walk, but my parents work too often to come get me,” he paused for a moment and giggled, “and no car” he shrugged and continued giggling.“I'll drive you.” Yeonjun suddenly said without any pause. His face was straight but his heart was pounding a little too hard out of nervousness. He quickly stammered to explain because Beomgyu just looked at him waiting for it.“I mean, I have a car and your place is actually in the same direction as mine, so um, it's really no issue if you need a ride.” This wasn't the entire truth, yes generally speaking Yeonjun’s house was in that direction, but they weren't that close to each other. He looked down at the table avoiding eye contact with the other boy awaiting his reply.Beomgyu just chuckled again and put his little notebook on the desk before turning all the way in his chair to face Yeonjun.“Okay sounds good to me!” He said seeming happy and not at all weirded out. Yeonjun looked back at him relieved. It was okay, he was just offering the new kid a ride home. There was nothing weird about that so why was Yeonjun looking forward to it?Just as Yeonjun started to think about why these events were making him so happy Ms. Davis finally entered the classroom tapping on the chalkboard and getting everyone in their seats. Kai quickly rushed to sit in his seat next to Yeonjun and everyone started to look at the teacher at the front of the room.“Ah okay, I'll meet you at the courtyard at 3?” He said to Beomgyu before he smiled, nodded, and turned back around.
He’d be alone with him now, what was he getting himself into?
