Day 2. Kiss

It’d been over six months since Maggie had promised to wait for Nina. She’d waited and she’d somehow fallen more in love with the other woman. Maggie spent more time at Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death than she did her own shop. She was getting better and better at the more complex drinks, often helping Nina during the rush hours. During the lulls, she would teach Maggie new things. While she wasn’t particularly good at most of it, she

was

getting better, if she did say so herself.

They’d agreed to take things slow, and it’d been about a month since they’d tentatively made things official. The way Maggie thought about it, she’d already waited this long, she could wait some more.

Even if Nina’s lips were very inviting right now.

But she didn’t, because Nina was everything, and making her uncomfortable was the last thing she wanted to do.

With so much of her days spent watching the other woman, she noticed immediately when something was off this morning. She didn’t mention it, because oftentimes directly asking would just prompt evasion and distraction. If she wanted an honest answer, Nina would have to be willing to share.

So when they retired to Maggie’s shop, as they usually did this time of night, the blonde woman could feel the tension in the air. Nina was going to say something. Maggie knew this in the way she was fiddling with her rings, and cracking her knuckles. They were her nervous habits.

Maggie turned around after flipping the sign to

Closed

. Nina was standing a few paces away, bouncing on her heels. Maggie got busy behind the counter, as she usually did. She started talking, just about anything. This was their routine, Maggie filling in their casual silences.

So when Nina said, not unkindly, “Shut up.” Maggie was thrown off a bit. She was even more thrown off when she turned around and Nina was right next to her, and suddenly her lips were on Maggie's.

It was everything she’d dreamed of and more. Nina tasted like the hot chocolate Maggie had made for her right before close, she tasted like honey, and she tasted like home. Her lips were soft and inviting, even if slightly chapped. Maggie filed that away, reminding herself to buy a chapstick for her.

There was nothing hungry or desperate about the kiss. It was slow and soft and

love

and then Nina’s hands were combing through her hair and

my god she loved this woman

.

When they pulled apart, foreheads resting together still, Nina said tentatively, for the first time, “I love you.” Her words were hesitant but not unsure. She meant every word, and Maggie could feel the love behind them.

“I love you too.”
