Night had fallen over Los Angeles, a city usually vibrant with life, but that night, a dull unease hung in the air. Sergeant Athena Grant had been summoned to the police chief’s office for a meeting she hadn’t anticipated. The atmosphere in the room was tense. The chief, a middle-aged man with tired features, stood behind his desk, his expression dark, as if carrying a burden far heavier than he let on.Athena entered, somewhat perplexed, and sat across from him. “Chief, you called me here at this hour? What’s going on?” she asked, her gaze scanning the desk cluttered with files. A shiver ran down her spine. She knew that meetings like this never meant anything good. The police chief, a sturdy and pragmatic man, placed his hands on the desk, leaning forward slightly. “Athena, you’re one of the most competent people in this city, and I genuinely trust you.” He looked at her, his eyes heavy with seriousness.A heavy silence fell between them before he continued. “Do you remember the killer who terrorized our country about ten years ago? The one they called ‘The Phantom’?”Athena didn’t respond immediately. Just hearing the name of that killer sent chills down her spine. The Phantom… a name she’d heard countless times, a name that still struck fear in many cities across the United States. The killer had never been caught. The murders had stopped as suddenly as they had begun. But no trace of the assassin was ever found. No witnesses, no motive—just bodies left in random locations across the city. Each bearing the killer’s signature: a series of specific wounds, a hidden code in the arrangement of the corpses.“Yes,” she finally answered, her voice cold, almost distant. “I remember. How could I forget?”The chief sighed, looking weary. “Athena, over the past few days, we’ve found nearly ten bodies. And these murders… they all follow the same pattern as the Phantom’s. The victims were killed in the same way, in public places, left behind, their bodies arranged like a macabre work of art. The signature is undeniable.”Athena felt her chest tighten. A chill of horror washed over her. “You mean he’s back?” she asked, her voice trembling despite her attempt to remain composed. She had sworn never to think of that killer again, never to let fear consume her, but it was hard to stay stoic in the face of such a reality.“I’m not sure,” the chief replied, shaking his head. “But everything points to it. And the truth is, we have no idea who he is. This guy is a ghost. We investigated every lead back then, but he never made a mistake. He always knew where to strike, and no one ever saw his face.”Athena stood up, her hands gripping the file in front of her. “And now?” she asked, even though the answer was obvious. The killer was back, and this time, he was bolder than ever. But Athena also knew he wouldn’t make any mistakes this time. This killer was smart. Too smart.“I want you to lead this investigation,” said the chief, his tone leaving little room for debate. “I know you can do it. You know this city, you know its secrets, and you have unparalleled instincts.”Athena turned to him, her eyes filled with determination. “And what if this killer is closer than we think?” she murmured, as if speaking to herself. “He’s always been there, hiding in the shadows. How do we know he isn’t already watching us?”The chief didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he simply looked at her, his gaze grave. “That’s why I called you here, Athena. Because he’s back, and he’s more dangerous than ever.”Athena nodded. The weight of the situation was crushing, but she knew there was no other choice. She had never backed down from a challenge, but the thought that this killer could be closer than ever unnerved her. They had to act quickly. If the killer was truly back, there was no time to waste.“I’ll get on it right away,” she said firmly, even as uncertainty gnawed at her. “I’ll find whatever I can, and this time, I’ll make sure he can’t escape.”The chief gave her one last look. “I’m counting on you, Athena. And remember… be careful. This guy leaves no trace.”***Back home after an intense day of investigation, Athena entered her apartment with the weight of her mission pressing heavily on her. The room was silent, and the air felt thick, as if even the atmosphere was weighed down by the tension. She sat in the living room, staring blankly ahead. It was hard to believe this was happening again. Ten murders in one week. Ten victims, killed in the same manner as the Phantom’s.She couldn’t shake the thought that the killer could be someone she knew, someone from the city. Their faces came to mind: her colleagues, her friends, everyone she interacted with. But nothing made sense. The killer was a ghost who left no trace, no clear lead. He vanished into the shadows.Athena shook her head, trying to push away the thought that clung to her mind. She suddenly stood up, moving to the window for a moment’s respite. She gazed at her dark garden. The shadows stretched, and the fear grew stronger. She knew that, whatever the outcome, she wasn’t alone in this quest. But the question remained: who could stop this killer before he claimed another victim? The only certainty Athena had was that she wasn’t ready to let the Phantom win again.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Athena stood in front of the large windows of her room, observing the sky on that day. It was 12:30 PM. The anxiety that inhabited her was palpable. She had plunged into an abyss of memories, recalling the stories about "The Phantom," the killer who had terrorized the country ten years earlier. The faces of the victims floated in her mind, their silent screams echoing in the depths of her memory. This was not just an investigation; it was a struggle against her own demons. She stood up, determined not to let fear overwhelm her. Her mission was not just to solve murders, but to protect her city, her family, and her friends. She needed answers. Approaching her desk, she pulled out a file containing the reports of the bodies that had been found. The details were horrifying, but she knew they contained crucial clues. The injuries, the discovery locations, all of it had to make sense. After long hours of analysis, she decided it was time to leave her apartment. She headed to the fire station where Bobby, Buck, Eddie, Hen, and Chimney were waiting for her for lunch. The atmosphere at the station was as always, full of laughter and camaraderie.Upon entering, she was greeted by Bobby's warm smile. "Athena! It's great to see you. We made tacos; you should join us."She sat down at the table, but her mind was already elsewhere. She wanted to talk, to share her worries, but she knew she had to be cautious. "Thanks, Bobby." She took a bite, her gaze scanning the table. "Listen, guys, I need to talk to you about something important."Everyone listened, a glimmer of concern in their eyes. "I've just been assigned to a case. There have been several murders recently, and everything seems to indicate that it's linked to a serial killer who is back."Hen furrowed her brows, curious. "This killer must be very important for you to be so on edge..."Athena hesitated for a moment, then replied slowly. "Phantom. That's what he called himself."Silence fell like a lead weight. The faces froze, and Buck, intrigued, asked, "Phantom? Who is this guy?"All eyes turned to Buck, astonished by his ignorance. Chimney, wide-eyed, straightened up. "You don't know who he is? He's a serial killer who terrorized the whole country!"Chimney took a deep breath, recalling the tragic stories. "Ten years ago, he wreaked havoc. Brutal murders, each more horrific than the last. No one knew who he was; he just left bodies behind."Buck, visibly puzzled, shook his head. "How come I've never heard of this?"Eddie, looking serious, shrugged. "At the time, you must have been traveling abroad, or maybe you were too scatterbrained to pay attention to what was happening here."A nervous chuckle rippled across the table, but the concern remained palpable. Buck, realizing the gravity of the situation, abruptly stood up. "I'm going to the bathroom," he said, his face pale.As he walked away, the conversation resumed. "You know, it's possible that this killer is smarter than we think," Hen observed. "The way he operates... it's like he’s playing with the world."Athena nodded, her mind racing. "I know. That's why we need to stay vigilant. I can't help but think he might already be among us, hiding in the shadows."Chimney nodded, his expression worried. "What can we do? How do we stop someone who knows how to hide so well?""By investigating," Athena replied firmly. "And by being cautious, because as I said, this killer might have been hiding among us all this time and has decided to resurface after ten years."The rest of the lunch unfolded in a mix of palpable tension and attempts at lightness. Laughter was less frequent, and jokes less hearty. Everyone knew that something sinister was on the horizon, and they were all on edge, aware that the night ahead could hide unspeakable horrors. The fight against the Phantom was just beginning, and every moment counted.
