Everything had been just wonderful after Henry and Bella finally got married. They had planned it all out meticulously, making sure every detail was perfect. Everything from the location down to the sunflowers. It was pure bliss as it happened, and now? They were just over the moon about each other. About a year into their relationship, the question of kids came up. Henry had always wanted to be a father, and with the near arrival of the Afton’s first child, they were convinced. Everything seemed normal at first, with very few downsides. But the rare and occasional dizziness and pain, doctors wrote it off as regular pregnancy symptoms. So, their worries were quelled for the time being. They would have many conversations about the whole ordeal. Bella always had felt something was off. She would insist there must be a problem, but there never was. Henry would always ease her mind with a few words, “You’re perfect, inside and out, Sunshine.”She had always been his Sunshine. Even on their first date, when walking her back to her car he leaned him and spoke softly. “I’ll see you later, Sunshine.”Nothing could stand in their way when they were together. Love was all they needed. That’s why they were so excited to bring a bundle of joy into the world. One late night, working tirelessly at Fredbear’s, Henry was sorting through paperwork as his phone began to ring. He put down the paper and turned to answer it unassumingly.“Hello, Fredbear’s Family Dinner, Henry Schmidt speaking.”Silence, though only for a few beats, it felt like an eternity.“H-Henry. It’s Bella- she-..”Thoughts raced through his mind. What possibly could have happened?
Was she okay?
Did something go wrong?
She was with Clara for the day, helping set up for their new babies.“She’s in the hospital. We think she went into labor early.”Clara’s voice answered on the other line, Henry could hear the worry in her voice.“I-I’ll be there right away.”Henry said, hanging up the phone with a sense of urgency. He got up out of his chair and rushed to the door, stopping to take his coat off the rack and putting it on. It had been a rainy day, the sky endlessly drizzling. It was no different when Henry stepped outside, opening his umbrella. He and Bella hated these kinds of days, the rain wetting everything in its path. The rain made it difficult to drive in as well. Not the best conditions for a husband worried sick for his wife. As he pulled up to the hospital he decided to ditch the umbrella, as it was a short walk into the clinic. He walked inside and up to the front desk.“U-Uh Hello?”“Hello! How may I help you, sir?”“I’m here for my wife.. Isabella Schmidt..?”“Room 103.”“Th-Thank you.”Henry briskly left off to room 103, worry in his step. After getting off the elevator and walking past a few rooms, there it was. Room 103. It was dimly lit with the window shade only pulled halfway down. There were doctors in the room, from what he could see. He was stuck watching from a thin window. He couldn’t see his wife amidst the commotion. And then he heard it.Loud crying erupted from the room, a baby’s cry. Henry couldn’t decide whether he should feel scared or burst with happiness. This was too early, horribly early in the pregnancy to give birth. About a month and two weeks (Henry and Bella kept track, counting down the days until they could finally meet their precious baby). But surely the crying was a good sign. Then upon closer inspection, he heard another noise from the room.A second set of cries. Had Bella given birth to twins? Oh Henry could barely contain himself. But, he was forced to wait outside, sitting on a nearby chair. He couldn’t wait to see his wife. To hug her, to hold her, to hold the babies. They had picked out two names. One for a girl and one for a boy, as they had chosen to keep the gender a secret. Charlotte Emily or Sampson Fredrick. Charlotte after Bella’s grandmother and Emily after Henry’s sister. Sampson after Bella’s dad and Fredrick after Henry’s brother. Now Henry might have to help Balla decide a whole new name if they had two of one gender. Henry just couldn’t wait to see. After a long while, the door opened.“Are you Mr, Schmidt?”Asked a nurse, an unreadable negative expression on her face.“Yes, that’s me. H-How is she? How are th-they?”“Your wife gave birth to two healthy twins, one boy and one girl. Though.. your wife wasn’t as fortunate.”At that moment, Henry’s heart sank. What did she mean? What happened to his Sunshine? Clara came out of the room, solemn expression on her face and tears in her eyes.“H-Henry I’m sorry- she..”It couldn’t be. She was gone. Clara had sat down with him and let him cry with her. The babies had been sent to another side of the hospital, needing further treatment as they were born prematurely. Clara had explained how she was only able to hold on for so long. Blood loss, Clara explained, was what had been her final factor. She bled out and the doctors had to perform some sort of c-section to get the remaining baby out. She had also explained that she had only helped in the back, not being able to be around Bella. In the end, Henry was left in the dark dreary room. Alone with his dead Sunshine. Never to smile again, never to laugh again, never to watch their children grow. Henry knelt by her side, her hand in his and his hands resting against his face. He said a soft prayer for her, tears streaming down his face. He didn’t have much time as the hospital needed him to sign the baby's birth certificates and other paperwork. He whispered one final goodbye to his love, heart heavy.
“I love you.. Sunshine..”
