The snow began falling lightly in the early morning, enveloping the neighborhood with a layer of white. It was one of those rare winter days when the world felt both vibrant and still, the cold air carrying a soft hush that made every sound seem amplified. Inside their cozy apartment, Daisuke was struggling to pull on his favorite navy-blue sweater, the one Miyako always teased him about for being two sizes too big.“Are you sure you’re not secretly auditioning for a hibernation contest?” Miyako called from the living room, his voice laced with humor.Daisuke finally managed to wrestle his way into the sweater and stepped into the room, his messy grey hair sticking up at odd angles. “It’s warm, okay? And I’m not the one who hoards enough scarves to outfit a small village.”Miyako grinned, brushing a stray strand of his blond hair away from his face as he handed Daisuke a steaming mug of hot chocolate. “Touché. But let’s be real—without me, you’d freeze every winter.”Daisuke rolls his eyes playfully, taking a sip. The sweetness warmed him from the inside out, though he suspected it had more to do with Miyako’s smile than the drink.Outside, the snow had thickened into soft flurries, and the world beyond their window looked like a scene straight out of a snow globe. Miyako’s red eyes lit up as he glanced out, and he set his empty mug down with purpose.“Let’s go out,” he said suddenly, grabbing his coat from the rack.Daisuke blinked. “Out? In this? It’s freezing!”“That’s what scarves are for,” Miyako said, wrapping a deep burgundy one around his neck with practiced ease. “Come on, it’s the perfect snow—fluffy, no wind, and it’s been ages since we’ve done something *actually* fun.”Daisuke tried to protest, but Miyako had already slipped on his boots and was holding out a pair of gloves with a mischievous look. There was no resisting that look. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The park near their apartment had transformed into a winter wonderland. Trees were draped in sparkling frost, their branches bowing under the weight of fresh snow. Footsteps crunched in the icy stillness as they walked side by side, the only sounds the occasional laughter of children sledding nearby and the faint rustle of the wind.Miyako had an energy about him that Daisuke found endlessly fascinating. He was always the first to suggest an adventure, his boundless enthusiasm pulling Daisuke out of his shell in ways he never expected. Today was no different.“Alright, snowball fight,” Miyako declared, crouching to scoop up a handful of snow. He began shaping it into a perfect sphere with the precision of someone who took his mischief seriously.“Oh, we’re doing this?” Daisuke said, already dodging as Miyako lobbed the first snowball in his direction.“Of course we are!” Miyako laughed, dodging behind a tree as Daisuke retaliated with a flurry of hastily-formed snowballs. For a while, the park echoed with their laughter and the sound of snow thudding against jackets. Daisuke managed to land a direct hit on Miyako’s shoulder, and Miyako responded with a sneak attack, dumping an entire handful of snow onto Daisuke’s head from a low-hanging branch.“You’re cheating!” Daisuke shouted, shaking snow from his hair.“It’s called strategy,” Miyako shot back, smirking as he ducked behind another tree.Eventually, they called a truce, collapsing onto a bench with flushed cheeks and numb fingers. Miyako leaned against Daisuke, their breath visible in the crisp air as they caught their breath.“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this,” Daisuke said, though his smile betrayed him.“Admit it, you’re having fun,” Miyako said, nudging him playfully.“Maybe a little,” Daisuke admitted. They sat there for a moment, watching the snow fall around them. Daisuke felt a warmth that had nothing to do with his oversized sweater. Miyako’s presence was like that—a quiet, steady light that made even the coldest days feel warmer. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Their next adventure came in the form of building a snowman. Or, as Miyako insisted, a “snow sculpture.”“It’s all about the details,” Miyako said, carefully crafting a tiny pair of eyebrows onto the snowman’s face with twigs.Daisuke snorted. “It’s a snowman, not a museum exhibit.”“Art is everywhere, Daisuke,” Miyako said with mock seriousness. “Even in snow.”Despite his teasing, Daisuke found himself getting into the spirit of it. He added a scarf to their creation and fashioned a pair of sunglasses out of two bottle caps they’d found in their pockets. When they were finished, they stood back to admire their work—a snowman with an undeniable air of coolness, complete with a crooked smile that matched Miyako’s own.“Not bad,” Daisuke said, crossing his arms.“Not bad?” Miyako gasped in mock offense. “It’s a masterpiece!”Daisuke laughed, and before he could say more, Miyako grabbed his hand, tugging him toward a nearby hill.“Come on,” Miyako said, his eyes sparkling. “There’s one more thing we have to do.”The sled was old and rickety, borrowed from a neighbor who’d assured them it still worked. They piled onto it awkwardly, Daisuke sitting behind Miyako, his arms wrapped around his boyfriend’s waist for balance.“Are you sure about this?” Daisuke asked as they teetered on the edge of the slope.“Absolutely not,” Miyako said, grinning. And with that, he pushed off.The world blurred as they sped down the hill, the cold air whipping against their faces and filling their ears with the sound of wind and their own laughter. Daisuke held on tightly, his heart racing—not from fear, but from the pure, unfiltered joy of the moment. When they reached the bottom, they tumbled off the sled in a heap, breathless and laughing so hard their sides ached. Daisuke ended up flat on his face in the snow, Miyako sprawled beside him, their hands brushing as they lay there catching their breath. The sky above them was a soft gray, the snow still falling in gentle flakes that melted as they landed on their skin. Daisuke turned his head to look at Miyako, who was smiling up at the sky like he had just won the lottery.“What?” Miyako said, noticing Daisuke’s gaze.“Nothing,” Daisuke said, his voice soft. “Just… you.”Miyako’s cheeks flushed—not from the cold, but from something warmer. He reached over, lacing his fingers with Daisuke’s.“I’m glad we did this,” Daisuke said after a moment, his thumb brushing against Miyako’s.“Me too,” Miyako said, squeezing his hand. “And for the record, you’re really cute when you’re covered in snow.”Daisuke groaned, but he couldn’t hide his smile. The snow continued to fall around them, silent and serene, as they lay there in their own little world. For a moment, it felt like time had stopped, and all that mattered was the warmth of Miyako’s hand in his.
