The Magic Of Prince

Entire Work

Work Text

Leon tried hard to ignore the evidence of his own eyes, his own experiences. It couldn’t be true. More than that, it mustn’t be true. Arthur was Crown Prince of Camelot, the most fervently anti-magic kingdom in the land, known for the terrible Purge that even now was only whispered about by townsfolk and even by certain nobles who had run a little too close to it. Those who had run closer still were nobles no longer, of course - if indeed they had even kept their heads. Therefore there was no chance at all that Arthur, son of Uther the Destroyer (a title First Knight Leon would never use to the King’s face, though he had heard that His Majesty was proud of his descriptor), would have magic, let alone be so foolish as to use it in front of the other knights. And yet. And yet.Leon was not First Knight for nothing. He could not help but notice that a remarkable amount of luck followed Prince Arthur about. Tree branches which did not seem rotted, yet which fell with remarkable precision upon his foes, just when he was about to be attacked. Life threatening situations and injuries that he surely should not have survived from which he yet returned victorious. Magical beasts who ought not to be killed but with the use of sorcery were downed by Arthur’s sword. And Arthur himself treated this as if nothing extraordinary had taken place.Yes, Leon concluded gloomily; that was the issue. Were Arthur to comment on these strange coincidences, or to question the remarkable good fortune under which he seemed to live, Leon might not feel so suspicious. (He would still be certain that something was going on, but he would, perhaps, be less convinced by the part of Arthur himself in the process.) But the fact that Arthur never questioned anything - even had his manservant making up truly unconvincing stories to cover up the true facts of some situations - it was this that led Leon to the only conclusion there could possibly be.That magic was being committed in the very heart of Camelot, under the very nose of the King; and that he, Leon, committed treason every day as he stayed his tongue and said nothing of what he saw and knew to be true.Because his liege, Arthur Pendragon, Crown Price of Camelot, was a sorcerer.
