Freezing his ass off was not how Win thought his Thursday afternoon would go. And yet, here he was, his hands scratched up, dirty and ice-cold, and the jacket he had thrown on, in his haste to follow Sound, was barely thick enough to cover him from the cold wind that swooped in and out of the endless lines of trees, all of which still had droplets of rain clinging to their countless fir needles. Trudging after the other boy, Win swore beneath his breath when he was forced off the trail by yet another couple heaving - or rather struggling with - a tree which looked way too heavy for them to carry alone, both their faces covered by the emerald green branches, muffling their own curses enough that Win couldn’t even find any enjoyment in watching and was instead left uselessly glaring after them in annoyance. “Hurry up, Win!” Sound’s voice forced him to jerk his head around and direct the glare at the back of his boyfriend’s head instead. “The sun’s setting already, which means we won’t have enough …”Tuning out the one-sided conversation Sound was currently having with himself since Win was still stuck in the mud a few paces behind, Win ground his teeth together, to stop himself from yelling at the other to wait for him, and shook whatever dirt he could off his brand new sneakers. He’d been wholly unprepared for it when his boyfriend of almost three years had told him to get dressed and follow him before the other had hurried down the flight of stairs leading to the lobby of their apartment complex. Only once Sound was done ushering him into the driver’s seat of his car and had seated himself into the passenger seat, did the other tell him where they were going.“Okay, let’s go,” Sound had said, while Win had stared at him blankly, keys still in his hand, unmoving. “You gonna tell me where we’re going or am I supposed to read your mind, Pumpkin?” Arching his brow, Win had watched as Sound’s nose had scrunched up at the term of endearment before realisation had replaced the pleased expression. “Oh,” he had breathed out before finally announcing where they were going, “A Christmas tree. We still need one and Gun told me about this place - It’s not far! And, well, I thought it would be nice to go together, since we didn’t get to go and do that last year.” Win had let out a surprised hum before wordlessly passing Sound his phone so that the other could put in the directions. When all had been set and done but Win still hadn’t started the car, Sound had turned in his seat, his eyebrows thrown up in that oh-so-familiar frown, and opened his mouth. But before he had been able to utter anything, Win had simply leaned across the middle console, bringing his face right in front of the other’s. Sound’s eyes had narrowed at him and Win hadn’t been able to swallow his chuckle before nodding down towards the seatbelt.“Just making sure you’re safe.” “I think I got it but thanks,” Sound had murmured into the space between their mouths while Win had kept his gaze on the joy brightening his boyfriend’s eyes. “Never can be too sure.”“I guess not…”Now, Win felt a rush of satisfaction run through him as he remembered how Sound had closed his eyes in anticipation and, though he had considered to just lean in and give them both what they wanted, Win had sat back into the driver's seat, starting the car. Massaging the sore spot where the other had hit his shoulder just a few seconds after realising he had left him hanging, Win now watched Sound as he looked back, an impatient scowl visible even from this distance. Not knowing how to express his own annoyance at the whole situation, Win flipped the other off while stepping back onto the trail and made his way over to him. “This is your fault.” He didn’t specify what he was talking about and neither did he need to, seeing as Sound simply rolled his eyes at that statement before reaching a hand up to gently brush through Win’s hair, making a few stray fir needles fall out. “You look like a mess,” Sound told him, his fingers working through the tangles in his hair, yanking at one particularly relentless strand so hard that it sent a twinge of pain through Win’s body. The other apologized for it with a practiced look before trailing his fingers down the side of Win’s cold face, stopping once he was able to cup his cheek, the skin of his palm surprisingly warm. Leaning into the warmth, Win huffed out a slightly less annoyed breath. “And whose fault is that…”“Mine, as we’ve already established,” Sound noted, a smile teasing at his lips.A smile that only grew when Win finally couldn’t take it anymore and leaned in, swallowing the delighted noise Sound let out with a kiss. What was meant to just be a short gesture of affection turned into something they both sought comfort and warmth in as Sound deepened the kiss gently. When Win couldn’t help but sigh at the feeling of having Sound so close, his boyfriend started to giggle, the soft huffs of his laughter hot against Win‘s lips as the other slowly pulled away. “‘m sorry,” Sound muttered, still keeping his face close enough that Win could feel the words on his skin as his boyfriend nuzzled his nose into his cheek - a silent apology that Win instantly accepted, humming softly. After a moment, Sound pulled away completely, his hand falling from Win’s cheek to his shoulder where the other carefully traced over the sore spot like he could see it through all the layers of Win’s clothing. Tilting his head a little to meet Win’s gaze, Sound repeated his words, “I’m sorry.”This time he wasn’t apologizing for interrupting their kiss, Win knew. He’d already been forgiven for that - not that he’d needed forgiveness in the first place. Instead, Win could see that Sound felt bad for taking so long to choose the right Christmas tree, getting more and more irritated with every tree he didn’t think was good enough and taking his mood out on Win. To show that he had understood, he nodded his head and smiled at his boyfriend. Sound’s eyes lit up with happiness and he swiftly leaned in to peck Win on the mouth before hooking one of his arms around Win’s and tugging him forward again. “I’m sure it won’t take long! The next one will be perfect - Okay, maybe that one over there?” “You sure this one isn’t too bushy or maybe it’s crooked? Maybe it’s not green enough… or too green? Or maybe - “ “Okay, okay! I got it. Also, this one is too small…”“... And too barren.”“...”“What? It is! I can notice these things as well!” (It took them another forty-three minutes to find the perfect tree, in the end - which they now had to carry all the way back to the car, secure in a way that it wouldn’t be too damaged and drive all the way home.
It was almost midnight by the time they fell into their bed, having heaved the tree up the stairs and through their door, found the right stand for it and, after shuffling it around the living room countless times until Sound was completely satisfied, they finally headed to their bedroom, deciding to leave the decorating for another day.)
