Waking up in the dim basement room, there was a strange comfort in the lack of light. No sun filtering through windows, or warmth to draw attention to the outside world. The silence hung heavy, almost soothing in its emptiness.
Turning over to stare at the withered and moldy ceiling sprinkled with glow-in-the-dark stars he begged for during his adolescence, he tried to remember what dream he had just awoken from. It’s funny how the brain could make up such bizarre scenarios and intricate details of a made-up world that has no meaning and yet the second the frame awakes, the dream is forgotten.
All of his dreams are the same. The same pattern, the same place, the same pacing. As his body is suspended between wakefulness and sleep, the familiar weight of reality slipping away, slowly, the edges of a dream begin to take shape—familiar, yet disturbing, like a place he had always known but could never quite touch.
When his eyes are fully closed and his body has shut off, he awakes with a start, though the room is different. The air feels colder, the shadows longer, as if the world had shifted in the stillness. The walls seem to close in, their edges blurring, and the quiet is heavier, suffocating. It takes a moment to realize—this isn’t his room, this isn’t the basement he knew. His eyes begin to focus and as he's more aware of his surroundings, his pulse quickens and his breath catches in his throat.
He stands motionless, the cold floor beneath his feet anchoring him, but everything else feels distant. Before him stretches a long, dimly lit hallway, the flickering lights casting strange shadows along the walls. The air hangs heavy, thick with something unspoken, as if the space is waiting. He can’t see the end—only darkness, endless and swallowing. The quiet presses in on him, urging him to move, but something holds him in place, uncertain of what lies in the shadows.
A voice inside his mind tells him to move, to step forward and start walking. The voices are quiet, faint, almost shy. He doesn’t want to move. He can’t. He stays rooted in place as they get louder, now demanding, imploring him to move. His heart begins to race, the pace quickening as he feels his skin prickling. His senses are overwhelmed and his limbs are shaking, begging him to take a step as if something is taking him over, letting his control slip. The voices overlap and tune each other out until all he hears is a hushed ringing.
Suddenly, doors begin to appear along the walls—their dark, gritty surfaces seeming to materialize from the shadows themselves. They're uneven, some cracked and splintered, others slick with something that glistens faintly under the dim lights. Each one is slightly ajar, shadows spilling from their narrow gaps like whispers of something unseen. The further they stretch, the closer together they seem to grow, multiplying until they line the corridor in endless rows.

Slowly, he places a foot forward, barely making a sound as it meets the floor. A small, hesitant movement at first, testing the ground beneath him. His body, screaming at him to turn back, but he silences the impulse. Another step. Then another. The further he moved, the more his resolve began to solidify, though his nerves were still raw, the fear a constant companion. Each breath feels heavier, as though the air itself is thickening around him. His body tenses with every passing second, certain that something unseen is watching, waiting for him to make the wrong move. But he cannot afford to rush. No, he has to stay centered, maintaining a precise path down the middle, like a tightrope walker afraid of slipping.
A sudden noise—a soft scraping sound—comes from one of the doors to his right. His muscles freeze, eyes darting over. The door is barely ajar, but he can’t bring himself to look too closely. He must keep walking, keep going.
But the further he walks, the more the weight of the quietude pushes against him. Something isn’t right, and the hairs on his neck stand on end. The hallway seems to stretch infinitely, as though it’s pulling him deeper into its grasp, unwilling to let him leave. The silence is oppressive, weighing on his chest, yet it’s not the silence that makes his skin prickle with unease. It's the feeling that something, or someone, is lurking just beyond his reach.
Then, from behind one of the doors, a soft sound breaks the stillness. A laugh—light, sweet, almost too sweet, like the kind of laughter you’d hear in a daydream. His eyes dart toward the door on his left, the vaguest sliver of light leaking through the gap between the door and its frame. It’s a warm, golden glow, the kind of light that feels comforting at first, but somehow feels wrong in this place, in this hallway.
The laughter grows louder, more distinct. High-pitched, joyous. Happy. Too happy. The kind of laughter that doesn’t belong here. He halts for a moment, heart hammering, his breath seizing. His mind screams for him to keep moving, to ignore it, but curiosity and fear wrestle within him, holding him in place for a long, unblinking moment.
He takes another step forward, then another, his breath irregular again as he continues his slow progression down the hall. The laughter follows him, not just from one door, but from several, like whispers that echo off the walls, rising in intensity. Some of the laughter sounds almost familiar, too familiar—he can swear he hears his name among the giggles. "Come on… we’ve been waiting for you…"
A cold shiver crawls down his spine. His pulse spikes with dread. He doesn't dare look at the doors, but his eyes can’t help but flicker at the pale yellow glow spilling out from the cracks of the ones he passes. It’s subtle at first, just a glimmer—like the soft ray of a distant streetlamp seen through a window at night. But with every door he walks past, the light becomes more pronounced, more precise as if something inside is beckoning him.
His mind races. It’s just a trick, he tells himself. It’s not real. It can’t be real.
But despite his words, his body betrays him. His legs move faster now, driven by an instinctual urge to escape whatever it is that waits behind those doors, even as the laughter continues, echoing off the walls in an almost mocking cadence. He dares not to slow down, but every part of him is torn. The voices behind the doors call to him, their sweet, happy tones inviting him into something that feels impossibly wrong. And still, the hallway stretches on. Endless. The golden light continues to spill from the gaps in the doors, growing stronger with each step. His name is rumored in the sound of the laughter, muffled but unmistakable.
He wants to run. He wants to turn back. But something keeps him walking, each step heavier than the last, the pull of the lights and giggles making him feel both like he’s being drawn toward something terrible and like he has no choice but to keep going. The hallway might stretch forever, but the voices, those laughter-filled voices, are starting to sound more insistent, more like a command.
His feet drag with every step, the weight of the hallway and the voices pressing down on him, but something shifts. A soft light begins to appear in the distance, muted at first, like the glow of a candle flickering through dense mist. It’s warm and delicate, standing in stark contrast to the cold, muggy shadows that have surrounded him. The light feels like a beacon, drawing him toward it with a strange pull he can’t quite resist. His breath catches in his throat as he continues to walk, his eyes locked on the light, trying to understand what it is, what it means. Where is it coming from? he wonders, his mind spinning in confusion. The voices are still there—those haunting, sweet laughs, the whispers of his name—but one voice stands out, cutting through the noise, clear and distinct.

“It’s okay… come closer…”

It’s a voice he recognizes. A voice that makes his heart skip. Sam. He stares, unsure if the hallucination is growing stronger or if he’s finally losing his grip on reality. But the silhouette at the end of the hallway grows clearer, more defined with each step he takes. It's a figure standing in the light, a familiar shape, tall and almost comforting. His pace quickens, the strange confusion starting to give way to an overwhelming sense of hope. As he nears the end of the hallway, the silhouette sharpens. The voice—Sam’s voice—reaches him again, more real than the laughter, more grounding than the chaos around him.

“I’m here. I’m waiting for you.”

And there, bathed in that soft, golden glow, standing just ahead, is Sam. He’s smiling, his posture relaxed, as though waiting for him to reach him. It’s such a simple, comforting image—his friend, there in the darkness, offering safety. A wave of happiness washes over him, a surge of relief and warmth. It’s Sam. It’s really Sam. His breath steadies, and for a brief moment, the chaos that has surrounded him fades. He’s not alone. He’s safe.
But then, everything changes.
In an instant, the world around him begins to collapse. The hallway disappears, the walls evaporating into the darkness. The doors that once lined the sides vanish, like they were never there at all. The soft, golden light fades into nothingness, and the only light left is the dim bulb hanging above him, casting long shadows across the now-empty space.
Sam is gone.
The floor beneath his feet starts to shift. The tiles, once firm and solid, begin to splinter and crumble, falling one by one into a vast, gaping abyss that stretches beyond his comprehension. He watches, helpless, as the tiles slip away into the nothingness below, a cold wind rising as the gap widens, ready to swallow the last of the solid ground beneath him. His heart races again, panic setting in as the ground trembles. He steps back, eyes frantically searching for something—anything—to hold onto, but the floor beneath him gives way, tile after tile vanishing into the void. He reaches out, fingers grazing the edges of the remaining tiles, desperate to find something solid, something to keep him from falling, but there’s nothing.
With a sickening lurch, the last piece of floor beneath him crumbles away. He feels his body tipping forward, his feet no longer finding purchase. He’s falling, plummeting into the abyss, the darkness swallowing him whole.
He tries to scream, tries to grasp onto the air, but it’s useless. Nothing to hold, nothing to stop the fall. The cold rush of fear envelops him as he tumbles deeper into the void, the dim light above flickering out, leaving him alone, falling endlessly into the dark.
