Some would call what she was doing stalking, but Shepard didn't care. It had been two weeks since the events of Horizon, and who should she spot upon arrival back at the Citadel but Kaidan Alenko? He'd sent her a message saying that his friends had convinced him to go for drinks with a doctor, and now she stood watching them having lunch together on the Presidium.Jealousy burned through her like the blazing heart of a star. It lay in her chest like a heavyweight, and all rational thought flew out of the window.
It wasn't her place to get angry, not really. Kaidan had every single right to move on, after all she'd died and two years had passed. He didn't owe her anything, and yet, it fucking hurt.
Shepard absolutely despised the way he was looking at this woman, this stranger with an expression that used to be reserved for her.
And more than anything, she hated that little voice that whispered at the back of her mind. “What if?”What if she hadn't died? What if the last two years had been spent falling in love with him and being the recipient of all his affection?Kaidan leaned back, laughing at something the doctor said, and Shepard felt her heart splintering at the sound.
The urge to approach them and remind him she was still here was strong. But her feet refused to move.
Instead, she simply clenched her fists at her side and watched as Kaidan casually reached across the table and used a napkin to dab away sauce from the doctor's chin. The sight felt like a bullet to her heart, and Shepard decided she had seen enough. She turned to leave, and she didn't look back.
She learned the hard way that some battles simply couldn't be won.
