Jayce flickered in and out of multiple realities at the same time. His wrist seared where the rune was infused into his skin.

In all time lines in all possibilities... Only you... can show me this.

Mage Viktor's voice echoed through him. He shook his head and closed his eyes trying to clear his mind. It ached being pulled in so many directions at once.
A sudden cold blast over him like he was in a blizzard and everything shattered.
He was in dozens of places at the same time. He clutched his hammer, swung it high before slamming it down.
Make it stop! He pleaded in his mind.
The hammer struck and reverberated through the sickly anomaly pattern. Everything blasted away and then sucked back in towards him. Eyes wide and full of panic he heard the loud crashing before he felt it.
Landing hard on the ground he fell to his hands and knees."DAMN IT!" he roared in pain. He felt the stillness around him. Everything was so much quieter than it had been in a long time.

Where am I?

He panted trying to catch is breath for just a moment before he looked up. His hammer was gone. He was looking across the way to the other dark apartment building. This was the hole that had been blasted in his apartment. The night he almost ended it all. The night...
"Am I interrupting?" Viktor asked causally.
Jayce quickly looked over his shoulder to take in young and healthier, non-arcane touched Viktor.
Jayce couldn't speak. There were too many emotions flooding through him.
Excitement that he could see this version of Viktor, his Viktor. So full of life and hope.
Fear for what they were on the edge of discovering.
Relief that none of the pain, altering and death had happened yet.
Grief for everything that had been changed by this very moment for so many lives. Tears formed but didn't fall.
Viktor paused as he took in Jayce's expression. A small frown forming, along with that little crease between his borrows when he was trying to solve a problem that was evading him.
"I thought I may find you here," Viktor continued he held a small book. Jayce's notes on Hextech, "Impressive work you've been doing,"
Jayce looked away. I can't let Hextech be built. This was the night we spent hours working and reworking equations and theories.
He took a deep breath and remembered the future he saw.
"I have to let it go. It's too dangerous," Jayce looked down at his hands. His wrist was free of the rune. It wasn't fused anymore. He looked to his knee. It felt fine. Not injured or corrupted.
"That's a shame," Viktor continued, "I think you were on the verge of something great," he leaned against a table resting his cane beside him and started flipping through the notes.
"It was great," he closed his eyes for a moment, "Until it destroyed everything I cared about,"
"Yes, the explosion was a set back," Viktor closed the book with a snap, "What is left has been collected in Heimerdinger's office,"
"It will be destroyed tomorrow," Jayce whispered. Confident that was the right course of action. He stood and faced Viktor, "Let it happen, Viktor," a flicker of surprise crossed Viktor's face.

If this moment can be changed... Maybe Hextech will never be made and destroy everything.

"Are you sure you want that to happen?" Viktor asked watching him carefully, "This was your life's dream, "
Jayce cautiously stepped towards Viktor. He wanted to take him in his arms and never let go. Tell him all the things that he should have said every late night in the lab and every time they made a breakthrough and made something amazing.
"Yeah, it was," Jayce took a step closer, crowding Viktor slightly, "And then it destroyed everything. It destroyed you, Sky, countless of others, lead to war being brought to our doorstep. I can't let that happen again,"
Viktor's frown deepened and he leaned away slightly from Jayce but seemed more curious than anything.
"What do you mean happen again?,"
Might as well make the biggest changes now. Try to stop it and let Viktor know everything.

"We did it," Jayce sighed, "We cracked Hextech and harnessed its powers. You and I," he met Viktor's eyes, "brought magic to the world,"
Viktor studied him for a long moment. Before he shook his head.
"I do not like what you are implying," Viktor tried to refuse the conclusion he'd made.
"You have keys to Heimerdinger's office in your pocket. You came here hoping to convince me to continue my work. We worked through so many formulas and theories this night. We had to sneak in and test the theories. We did it," Viktor looked nervous, "You like my determination and drive. That and the incredible theories I was proposing. You've read every page of my notes," Jayce tapped the notebook with one finger while Viktor held it, "If we don't sneak in... then my life's efforts will be destroyed and the world will be safer,"
"This could help people," Viktor tried to convince him, "So much good could come of it. With some precautions-"
"No," he whispered sharply, "It's not going to cure you,"
Viktor tensed, eyes wide at that.
"What did you say?" Viktor hissed.
"I told you we cracked Hextech. It took us a long time and in that I got to know you better," he longingly looked at Viktor wanting to brush the hair out of his face, "You are sick and hid it from me. You wanted to find a way to cure your disease and heal your leg. To take that knowledge and power to heal the people of the Undercity," Jayce closed his eyes, "Instead we set that aside to build what the council wanted. You took experiments into your own hands and it... changed you," he opened his eyes glad to see that Viktor was still himself. Human.
"Changed me how?" Viktor whispered.
"Made you... More machine than man. Cold and detached," Viktor watched him intently, "You weren't really yourself anymore,""Was I able to help others?"
"You thought you were helping," Jayce looked into Viktor's eyes pleadingly, "It was wrong... They were healed but they had no individuality, no uniquness. They all became part of your mind. Extensions of yourself," Jayce fought back tears, "It wasn't healing is was taking over their minds and bodies,"
Viktor furrowed his brow and didn't reply. Jayce was just happy to see him again.

If I can convince him that we can find solutions other ways then we can avert the disaster I created.

Viktor was in his mind figuring out puzzle pieces and not minding where he was. Jayce loved that look of concentration. It usually meant something amazing was about to be pitched or discovered.
"What if... We prove that magic can be made but we only agree to use it to help people heal. No weapons or machinery. Just helping people?"
"This knowledge is dangerous," Jayce said warningly, "Despite our best efforts last time we were pressured into making things that could profit and improve Piltover,""You have a much better moral conviction having seen this terrible future," Viktor pointed out.
"You believe me?" Jayce asked. Viktor shrugged.
"You are either having a mental breakdown or this is true. Either way talking kept you from jumping,"
Jayce looked to the hole in the wall. He couldn't help but respect that. He smiled and shook his head.
"You've saved me so many times. You're amazing," Jayce looked at him with adoration. He could kiss him right now.
"Yes, well," Viktor blushed slightly and cleared his throat, "Tell me more about this doomed future with Hextech,"Jayce spent the next few hours answering Viktor's questions about the future, Hextech, the Hexcore, dying and traveling to the apocalypse end. Viktor sat back amazed at everything.
Jayce was emotionally raw living through it all again. He hoped that Viktor would listen. Hoped that somehow they could try something different.
Viktor and Jayce stared at each other for a long time before Viktor broke the silence.
"Why are you here now?"
"I think Mage you sent me back here to stop it all," Jayce leaned back in his chair, "Why else would I be back at the start of it all if not to change it?""Wouldn't there be time paradoxes from us not making Hextech in some way?" Viktor stood and cleared the chalkboard so he could write, "We are here," he drew a long line and put a dot a few inches into it, "Mage me gave you a rune and saved you and your mother," he drew another dot at the beginning with the word 'saved' beneath it, "We develop Hexgates," he filled in another dot and another until the whole timeline had points of interest.
They stared at it for a while.
"If we don't make Hextech this future changes," Jayce said.
"If we don't make Hextech some of this timeline changes," Viktor corrected, "There are events that are still out of our control and knowledge," he thought for a moment, "This boy Ekko," Viktor tapped the dot, "You said you remembered him. From when?"
"I went to the Undercity for supplies before the explosion. Kid ran the shop I bought from and charged me insane amount of money. I felt bad about haggling so I just paid his asking prices," Jayce rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. Viktor gave him a flat stare before rolling his eyes.
"Idiot," Viktor chided, "That child robbed you and you let it happen. Always haggle in the Undercity,“
"Well you'll have to show me how to do that sometime," Jayce chuckled. Viktor hummed disapprovingly at him but gave a slight smile, "Ekko made it into the anomaly with Heimerdinger and me,"
"Presumably they are in a different point of time in this same timeline or in an alternate,"
"I had assistance from Mage you," Jayce said standing and pointing at the end of the timeline, "He could control things precisely. The Anomaly seemed..."
"Wild and irratic," Viktor agreed standing next to him, "Then unless you find them here and now you must assume you are alone in this timeline,"
"I'm not alone," he smiled warmly at Viktor before placing a friendly hand on his shoulder, "I've got you,"
Viktor looked from Jayce's face to his hand before giving a small smile himself.
"Yes, you do," he had a curious look before moving back to the board. Jayce let his hand linger, "If we control Hextech better, with your years of working with it we can safeguard the experiments and make it so they don't touch organics without us directly wanting it to,"
"We did just have it out on a desk during much of our experimenting," Jayce followed his logic, "You only pushed because you were dying and becoming more desperate to find anything to help you. We have time and knowledge,"

Shit... This might work. Control and threaten to take this work elsewhere if being used for weapons.
He though about the possibilities and the improvements they could have made if he'd been focused on healing Viktor rather than all the fundraising and politicking he ended up doing.
"Jayce?" Viktor asked snapping a finger in front of his face. Jayce jumped back startled and ready to fight. Adrenaline pumped through him and his heart started racing. Viktor looked surprised at the suddenness of that reaction, "Are you alright?"
"What?" he asked, looking around lost again. For a moment he'd been back in the chasm fighting off a beast in the dark with his hammer. He recognized the moment he was in and slowly calmed down. He held his head in his hands and made a concentrated effort to slow his breathing.
"Jayce?" Viktor's voice was full of concern and a gentle hand was placed on Jayce's shoulder, "Sit down,"
Viktor guided him to a chair and stayed near him.
"Sorry," he looked up to Viktor. The fear gone now leaving him exhausted, "Just got lost in thought,"
"Does that happen often?" Viktor asked.
"I spent a long time alone in that chasm," he said. Viktor nodded with a sad look.
"It will take time to work through that. And even so it might not be something you ever get over. Trauma has a way of doing
that to a mind,"
"What were you asking me before?" Jayce appreciated the wisdom but didn't want to dwell on it.
"Do you want to go forward with Hextech?" Viktor watched him as he waited for an answer.
"With the greatest restrictions and focus... Yes," Jayce felt like either way he was making the wrong decision. The chance of doing it right and making a different choice was intoxicating. A little part of him wanted to find a cure for Viktor and then destroy everything.

They went to Heimerdinger's office and were interrupted by Mel again.
"This is not my bedroom," Viktor said puzzled, causing Jayce to stutter and flounder. Had he said that the first time?
Mel let them continue and distracted a guard. She was just as beautiful as he remembered. He knew every curve of her body. Had traced every gold line with his mouth. He missed her touch and smile.
"Jayce!" Viktor scolded quietly as he ushered him in. Shutting the door behind them, "Let's get this started," Viktor said as he locked the door.
"Grab one from that chest," he pointed to a chest holding the crystals, "Use the tongs!" he hurried over to the equipment and put it together. He had to rework a bit of it. The earliest prototypes were crude and needed significant changes but it would work.
Jayce had been preparing everything for about a half hour before they were able to first start it. The lights flickered and suddenly the whirring of the device sent them floating.
They hadn't barred the door this time so Heimerdinger, enforcers and Mel opened the door and saw them floating.

Magic is proven once again.

Jayce felt the flickering pull of the anomaly again. He gave a panicked look to Viktor before he was scattered into dozens of versions of himself again. He felt the pain of being split in multiple directions before it snapped back into him. He found himself standing on the ledge of his broken apartment wall again.
"Am I interrupting?" Viktor asked as he walked into the room holding Jayce's notebook.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Jayce turned to him, shocked. Viktor didn't have any sense of recognition that this was repeated.
"Viktor?" Jayce asked in a shaky voice, "What's happened?"
"Nothing new," he said unsure, "I came to check on you. Thought I would find you here,"
Jayce turned away from the ledge and approached Viktor.

What is going on? Why am I back here?

"It's because I made it again..." he said as he dropped to his knees in defeat, "I have to destroy it all,"
"But... It's your life's work?" Viktor said confused, "You are on the verge of a breakthrough!"
"It only leads to death and chaos. I can't let it exist," Jayce said, "Viktor we have to let it be destroyed,"
"I can't believe you'd listen to them," Viktor scoffed, "I thought you'd have more conviction and fight for your dream. Magic-"
"has destroyed everything and everyone I love," he interrupted angerly, "I let you talk me into safeguarding and trying it again. No. No," he said firmly as Viktor went to protest.
Viktor frowned at him.
Jayce just wanted to hold him.
"We could try anything else. I'll study any science and medical practices that could help you," Viktor took a step back, "You're so driven and passionate. I just want to help you. Let me. Just not with Hextech,""There are no other means," Viktor said slowly, "Who told you about my illness?"
"You did... eventually," Jayce looked down, "You've been sick since you were a child. The Gray," Jayce looked back up at Viktor, "I want to help. Hextech ruins everything. There has to be something you've missed. Something else we can try,"
Viktor looked at him so confused and angry.
"I came here to see what magic could really offer. And you tell me it is all bad like you've done any real experiments. Then I find out you've been stalking me?" Viktor headed to the door.
"It changed you," Jayce said solemnly, "We did our best. We made amazing breakthroughs. You were getting worse and desperate for a cure," Jayce didn't look away from Viktor, "There was an accident. It... It killed Sky and you made me promise to destroy it. Then there was an attack on the council while we were there. You... You died," tears spilled down his face, "I was desperate. So I did the only thing I could think of..." he looked down as he admitted this part, "I merged you with the Hexcore and it changed you. You were more machine than man. And it made things so much worse,"
"How... do you know about Sky?" Victor stood looming before him.
"She was our lab assistant at your request," Jayce looked up at Viktor, "She died because of what I brought into the world,"
"Are you saying... You've seen the future?" he questioned.
"Lived it. I don't really understand how I'm back here. And I've done this with you before,""What?"
"Told you I'm from the future. You convinced me to make Hextech with safeguards so it wouldn't be used as weapons. Only healing. But when we made it happen... I was sent back here again. Obviously I can't make Hextech ever again. It has to be destroyed,""You are suggesting a time loop paradox where you cannot exist while Hextech exists," Viktor said thoughtfully, "Interesting," he moved to the board and started clearing away equations to make way for his time loop theory.
Jayce sighed and contemplated not telling him anything.

Just stop it all now. Maybe jumping would end it all. All the recreating would take years and hundreds of hours of dedicated work. Could anyone else make it?

"... time cannot exist in that way. Are you even listening?" Viktor asked finding Jayce looking out the open hole, "Do not leave me with this knowledge by myself," he said sadly.
Jayce looked to him and saw the sadness of lonely years and sleepless nights that Viktor had most of his time at the Academy. He'd once made a comment that Jayce was the only real friend he'd made in Piltover.
"I have to destroy it,""Jumping won't stop it. And you risk just coming back here again," Viktor said.
Jayce sighed and stood.
"If I stay you have to promise me you'll never use magic or shimmer to fix you. You're not broken," Jayce didn't care this time that he was too close to Viktor.
Viktor pressed his back to the chalkboard and looked up at him with wide eyes.
"There's a lot I never told you that I should have," Jayce whispered as he leaned on his arms on either side of Viktor.
"You are very close," Viktor said quietly his eyes not leaving Jayce's mouth. His breathing quickened.
"I spent years alone with you," Jayce took in all of Viktor's face, "Your flirty jabs and brilliant mind keeping me enthralled and pushing forward. I never had the courage to tell you how much I admired you. Wanted you," his voice lowered as he admitted the last part.
"I'm not the man you fell for," Viktor gulped and let a sad expression cross his face.
"Oh, but you are. He's here trying to convince me to make that final push for the things I've been working on my whole life. He's here writing on my chalkboard trying to solve the new riddle I put before him with time travel," Jayce leaned in and whispered into Viktor's ear, "Your brilliant mind has kept me by your side the whole time,"He could feel Viktor shiver as he drew back slightly. He looked to Viktor's lips and made a decision. He leaned down and kissed Viktor. Viktor tensed and inhaled sharply.
Jayce immediately worried he'd gone too far. That this one kiss would the only one he ever got.

I'll take that chance then. One kiss.

He drew back slightly letting Viktor breathe. Viktor blinked several times before leaning into him and kissing him back. Jayce wrapped his arms around Viktor pulling them close. Viktor's hands ran up and down his back gripping his vest.
Desperately Jayce opened his mouth and invited Viktor in. Tongues chased each other and left them breathless. They broke the kiss to breathe.
"Viktor," Jayce moaned as Viktor's hands grabbed his ass.
"You are an idiot and reckless," Viktor whispered into his ear causing Jayce to shiver, "Why me?"
"Told you," Jayce kissed Viktor's neck, "You're brilliant," he moved to the other side, "Witty," he cupped Viktor's face and met his eyes, "Driven and attractive," he kissed Viktor again, reveling in the soft moan from him.
"I don't even know you," Viktor broke the kiss to say.
"You've read my notes," Jayce said, "You have seen me around the Academy,"
"It helps you are very good looking," Viktor said, "Wait," he put a hand on Jayce's chest. Jayce paused and waited for Viktor. He caught his breath and looked up at Jayce, "I have not built that same relationship with you as you had before," Viktor frowned, "If we don't build Hextech together why would we be working together now?"
"Because I want to help you live," Jayce said simply, "I'm expelled now. I'll gladly take my efforts to the Undercity to make it better. Anyway I can,"
Viktor squinted at him, "I cannot see you surving the Undercity. What if..." he thought for a moment, "We speak with Heimerdinger and your mind doesn't go to waste. Put you under direct supervision at all times in the lab. We work on healing and medical equipment. Your designs are inspired,""I've even made improvements to your cane, crutch and knee brace over the years. I'm handy in a forge," he could feel hope and excitement building, "Do you think we could make an arrangement?"
"I think if I suggest it and you seem like a young misguided geniuse we can get away with it," Viktor brushed some of Jayce's hair out of his face.
"I'd like that. Would you be my lab partner and supervision?" Jayce asked hopefully.
"Yes, I think I'd like that," Viktor kissed him again, "Do not think that you can slack off. There is work to do and you have results to show. Especially since I will be the one risking the most from this,""Understood, V," Jayce smiled at him. Hope brimming in him that they may have changed the date of the world.
Viktor's breath hitched at the nickname and he let out a small chuckle. He patted the side of Jayce's face gently.
"We have work to do tonight,"They worked through the night on a proposal to keep Jayce Talis supervised and working on a project that would keep him away from magic.
"It is dangerous to let a bright mind like his go to waste when careful guidance will keep him safely working on projects that truly help humanity," Viktor read his statement. Jayce looked to him with a mix of hope and worry.
"I like the sounds of it. Do you think they'll accept it?"
"It is worth a shot," Viktor propped his leg up across Jayce's legs, "If they sponsor you then you will have many more opportunities. If not then we establish you in the Undercity where I visit regularly and make sure you're still alive,""You'd do that for me?" Jayce asked teasingly, "You only just met me," a twinkle of mirth flashed in Viktor's eyes.
"Of course there will be rumors," Viktor said without elaborating.
"Rumors? Of what?" Jayce was puzzled.
"Of my secret love affair with someone in the Undercity. Regular trips means someone important. Or that I am participating in nefarious activities. You know how suspicious people can be of a poor cripple from Zaun,"Jayce thought on that for a moment. Even in this worst case scenerio Viktor wanted to be involved with him.
"Heimerdinger is often the voice of reason even if he is more cautious on certain topics,"
"Mel might be a good angle too," Jayce said. Viktor furrowed his brows, "Don't make that face. She's supported many community projects and looking to improve the lives of all people of both cities,"
"Her good deeds don't always have the... reaching impact she says they do," Viktor said warily, "Did you have a history with her? In your original timeline?"
Jayce blushed but nodded, "She was the champion of our Hextech project and moved to make me a Councilor," Viktor's eyebrows raised at that, "But the relationship didn't start until after I became a councilor. You got sick soon after that and I... Spent more time worrying and thinking about you than I prioroirzed anything," he placed a gentle hand on Viktor's ankle, "I love you both," he whispered.
"Both," Viktor seemed to ease at that, "How very progressive of you,"
"How?"
"Most people only choose one to love... Puts them in conflict. In the Undercity similar arrangements have been made where no one comprises who they love and a balance is found," he met Jayce's eyes, "If it means not being in competition with the most beautiful, powerful, and wealthiest woman in Piltover, I can share,"
Jayce's jaw dropped. Did Viktor just... Yeah he did.
His mind immediately raced to having both of the in his arms. The confusing aching thoughts he had in the chasm as he struggled to survive in the future were brought forward again. Mel in the flames shifting to Viktor. To both of them hating him for loving the other.
"I don't even know if she'll look my way again. I won't be bringing magic and power,""You underestimate your charm and the way your passion is contagious to all those around you," Viktor moved his leg and grabbed his cane, "Come it is early and I want to change before I see Heimerdinger and I suppose... Councilor Medarda,"

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

They made their way up to Viktor's private quarters in the Academy. Jayce had been here before. Not on many occasions but they had been working together and sometimes Jayce would walk Viktor home so they could continue their conversations. Viktor seemed a little apprehensive."I did not clean up," Viktor said before opening the door, "I do not have visitors,""I've been to your place before," Jayce chuckled, "Had to come check on you after a gala party where you'd been a little drunk,""I cannot imagine a life where I went to a gala," Viktor shook his head in disgust as he opened his door.Clothes and papers were littering the floor in piles. There wasn't much to the space but it felt cozy. A small kitchen to the left lined the wall and a bed pressed into the corner, a small desk was crammed in the corner. Off to the side was a door Jayce knew was the small bathroom. It wasn't much but it was a private space with no communal kitchen and bathrooms like the student dorms were."Is it anything like you remember?" Viktor asked."You must have cleaned up before I came over the few planned times," he smiled at the memories, "But it does look like the times when I surprised you with a few visits,""Ah," he looked embarrassed, "Don't get comfortable. We will be leaving once I'm ready," Jayce nodded.Viktor pulled some clothes out from the wardrobe at the foot of the bed and headed to the bathroom. Jayce was curious what kind of things Viktor would write about pre-hextech. He stood at the desk and looked at the top few sheets. One stack was just homework to be graded. He skipped those and saw some medical paperwork and physicals. He hadn't seen any of these. The secret of his illness was well hidden until it put him in the hospital. He heard shuffling at the bathroom door and decided to just start reading one of the books on the desk. That was safe and not intrusive right?"Have you thought of anything else you'd like to add to our case?" Viktor asked as he opened the door. He paused briefly as he noted Jayce standing at the desk, relaxing as he saw the book."Hmm? Oh no," Jayce closed the book and approached him, "I'm as ready as I'll be. You?""One more thing," he opened the fridge, grabbed a bottle and drank half. Jayce just chuckled."Glad to know that's still the same,""If you say one disparaging word about my sweetmilk you can leave," he said imperiously."I learned that lesson a long time ago," he smirked at Viktor. Who had a little milk on his upper lip. Jayce stepped in front of Viktor who raised an eyebrow at the approach. Jayce just lifted his hand and rubbed his thumb to clean off the milk, gently cupping Viktor's face as he did. Viktor's breathing increased as Jayce touched him. Jayce pulled away and put his thumb in his own mouth savoring the sweet taste.Viktor's eyes followed his thumb without blinking. The look of pure lust Viktor gave him made him want to skip everything today and show Viktor what he could do. Viktor must have seen the desire in Jayce because he smirked back at him."We should go," Viktor whispered, "Unless you'd like to throw all our plans out,""Maybe after we see how the petition goes we come back here and finish what we started last night,"Viktor let his gaze purposefully look over Jayce. Which he enjoyed immensely."Let's see if it's celebratory or condolences," Viktor said as he passed Jayce, gently brushing his hand across Jayce's chest. Jayce willed his arousal to cool as they left for Heimerdinger's office.

"Sir, I need to speak with you," Viktor said as he entered the Dean's office. Heimerdinger was up and bustling around his office. Viktor had Jayce wait outside the door. He listened intently."Of course Viktor!" Heimerdinger answered cheerily, "How can I help you?""It's regarding Jayce Talis, sir,""There is no way I am releasing any of his research. You know that,""That is not what I am here to ask. Sir, he is a bright and intelligent man. Even without magic his talents can be utilized. Better to have a mind like this supervised, no?""You may have a point," Heimerdinger said musingly, "What do you propose would be a good direction to point him in?""It may be a bit self indulgent but I suggest medical equipment and possibly treatments. His engineering is refined, he has skill at the forge and with oversight could be a boon to those with ailments," Viktor gave their worked on sales pitch."I don't know... He may try to make more connections to the Arcane. We can't have him poking around anything like that,""What better way to keep that knowledge watched than under a directed project?"Papers rustled and it was quiet while Heimerdinger read through their proposal."Hmm, compelling," Heimerdinger said, "Keeping him from going to the Undercity where he may try to use his knowledge in nefarious ways to survive is a very strong point,""Life is difficult there," Viktor said, "I do not think he would adjust well to the harshness of life,""We would need funding. It cannot be through the academy and the Kirriman's have already dropped their sponsorship,""Perhaps Councilor Medarda would be sympathetic to the betterment of the needy and disabled?" Viktor kept his tone even."She does like to have several philanthropic endeavors going. I'll call a meeting with her. Do you know where Mr. Talis is? Hopefully he hasn't done anything drastic,""I found him moments before he made... a leap," Viktor said pointedly with a long pause, "I know where to find him,““I see," Heimerdinger said sadly, "I will send for you if she agrees to meet,""Thank you, sir," Viktor walked back to the door and Jayce stayed out of sight as Viktor made sure to close the door. They shared a hopeful smile. That was one part of their plan in motion.Viktor and Jayce found a spot not too far from Heimerdinger's office to wait. Jace paced. Viktor sat and watched him.
If this plan works I could potentially have access to many medical professionals to consult on different plans. I'll need to study more anatomy and research the pollutants that created the Gray. I should get a copy of Viktor's medical records and compare to the few things I heard from the doctors when he was hospitalized.

Mel is a good person. She'll see the value of this. Otherwise...

I'll have to move to the Undercity. Mom would try and keep me home but I couldn't burden her with more of my mistakes.
"Ah, there you are!" Heimerdinger cut through Jayce's thoughts as he approached, "Viktor, Mr. Talis, she has agreed to a meeting in 2 hours. We will be meeting in her office. I must say, giving your proposal more thought I do see the merits of a dedicated project for you, my boy," he said the last part directly to Jayce."I appreciate your understanding. I am sorry for speaking against your advice before the council. You are right... The Arcane is dangerous. Please tell me you destroyed my work,"Heimerdinger studied him seriously for a very long moment."Something is different about you," he scurried closer, "Yes, very interesting... Did you share this information with young Viktor?"Jayce was confused. What? He can tell? He looked to Viktor who shook his head and shrugged. Very helpful, V."Sir?" Jayce asked."About where you're from? More accurately... when," Heimerdinger gave him a pointed look."Oh! You can tell?" Jayce relaxed. Heimerdinger gave a sing nod of confirmation, "Yes, Viktor knows. I don't want to keep secrets from him," Viktor didn't say anything but looked away with a soft smile, "Are you also from the future?""Me? No! What a proposterous thought. I have no interest in meddling with time," Heimerdinger said, waving his hands before him animatedly, "How did you get here? I have many questions," he looked around like he just realized where they were, "But perhaps best to discuss this somewhere more private,"Jayce looked to Viktor who nodded slightly. Heimerdinger lead them back to his office and closed the doors."Time Travel! That is incredible. You must have meddle with the Arcane. Tell me, how did you get here," Heimerdinger poured them each a cup of tea.Jayce started explaining the fact that last night was the critical moment that set everything off. He hadn't explained in detail everything to Viktor this round so he too was reacting poorly to the news."Please, sir," Jayce begged, "tell me you have destroyed everything," worry tinged his voice."Yes, that was my first task this morning. A generous explosion!" Heimerdinger was pleased with himself"Not everything," Viktor pulled Jayce's notebook out of his bag and passed it to Heimerdinger, "Apologies sir,""Ah, curiosity will do that," he took the notebook, "Thank you for returning it," He walked over to a desk drawer and pulled out a metal tray and a small torch. Pulled his goggles down and burned Jayce's journal to ashes.Jayce felt a sudden sense of relief. No one would be able to use his work to try and recreate Hextech. He'd saved the world from a doomed fate. He rubbed his hands over his face."That is that!" Heimerdinger put the torch away and tucked the tray away, "Last thing with the whole mess is that they are still looking for the children who broke into your apartment,"
Shit. That was somehow connected to Vi, Jinx, and Ekko.
"No no no," he stood and paced, "They have to stop... It makes things go very wrong if they go looking for them,"He explained what little he knew about the events that happened in the Undercity and specifically what happened with Vi and her family."I have to admit I was more focused on Hextech than anything going on down there," Jayce slumped in his chair."That does change things," Heimerdinger murmmered, "Let's head to Coucillor Medarda's office and then I will handle this new issue. Thank you for telling me. You've made the right choice."Viktor stole glances at him as they walked to the meeting. Jayce was genuinely worried that the explosion that killed Vi and Jiinx's family was also partly his fault. The kids had stolen some of his work but the crystals were volitle. They arrived sooner than Jayce had expected, having been lost in thought and worry."Welcome Coucillor, Viktor... Mr. Talis," Elora, Mel's assistant greeted formally, "Please come in. Councilor Medarda will be with you shortly,"They headed to the large table in the middle where there were four chairs placed around it. One for Mel on one side and three on the other side for them. Viktor took the one on the end so he would have room for his leg. Jayce took the one next to him and Heimerdinger took the last. They didn't have to wait long for Mel to arrive. She entered gracefully and in her beautiful white dress that she normally wore. Jayce felt like he was living in a dream seeing her again like this. All three made to rise as she entered."Morning gentlemen, please sit," she took her seat across from them. Directly across from Jayce. His heart raced and he couldn't help but stare."Thank you for meeting with us, Councilor," Heimerdinger started, "There has been a proposal for a good cause. Also to keep a brilliant mind out of trouble,""I see," her eyes held Jayce's, "What kind of proposal?""Mr. Talis and Viktor have submitted a proposal to create a special project for medical advancement. To help people's ailments with medical devices and treatments. Here is what they have submitted to me,"Mel took the paper and read the overview page that they had prepared last night. Her expression was mild and she looked to Viktor, "You have included yourself in this project. If this is approved it would be full time work. Are you prepared to resign as the dean's assistant?""Yes," Viktor answered confidently, "I have appreciated all the effort and experience Councilor Heimerdinger has provided me. My goals remain the same as when I first left the Undercity. To do as much good as possible for the people. Especially for those that are ill or disabled. This project would be the best way for me to put my skills to use,""And you would want to work with Mr. Talis? Who has just been expelled for reckless endangerment due to his exploits into the Arcane," she had a slight smile creeping in."To be honest Councilor," Viktor leaned forward, "I'd rather harness that drive and passion towards something that will do more good. Hence the supervision. No unauthorized works. If he is discovered breaking the terms of the contract have his arrested," Viktor shrugged. Jayce turned to him sharply offended he would suggest it, "Better than having him move to the Undercity, struggle to survive and be used by a crime lord,"Mel leaned back at that. She studied Viktor before opening the document to the project outlines. Jayce schooled his face so it wouldn't have any expression and waited.Mel continued to read. She finished the last page of the proposal and closed it thoughtfully."This project would need medical experts to oversee many parts of it. There would also need to be some sort of clinical trials for testing. Are you both willing to cross train into the medical fields?""Yes, I have already been self studying due to my own physical ailments," Viktor agreed immediately."Yes and I have some experience in making prototypes for mobility aids and prosthetics," Jayce included. She raised an eyebrow at that, slightly impressed."Very well then," she handed the paperwork off to Elora, "We will move forward with this project. I will take financial responsibility and start working on the contract. It shouldn't take more than two days I think. Until then," she looked to Jayce for emphasis, "Be on your best behavior. Otherwise the deal is off,""Yes, ma'am," he dipped his head, "Thank you for the opportunity,""Thank you councilor," Viktor said as he stood, "I will make sure he behaves,""Yes, thank you. I appreciate your time and effort keeping two minds focused," Heimerdinger said before jumping out of the chair. They left and continued down the hall."It will be a shame to see you go, Viktor. You've been one of the best assistants I've had in a long time. But! I'm very happy to see you take on a project of your own towards something you're passionate about,""Thank you, sir," Viktor was quiet for a moment, "It was not my intention to make this proposal my resignation,""It is understandable and I am proud of you," he stopped in front of his office, "I'll handle the Undercity issue. Do you have any recommendations for a new assistant?""Actually, yes," Viktor said, "Miss Sky Young. She is diligent, smart and curious,""Ah! Yes, Miss Young is a great suggestion! I will make her the offer formally once you sign the contract for this new project. Do let her know she is a candidate won't you?""Of course," Viktor smiled and waved his goodbye to Heimerdinger."Goodbye and thank you again sir," Jayce said before following Viktor. They quietly made their way down the hallway with a brief glance they were both grinning. Jayce was nearly bouncing down the hallway.
We did it?! Destroyed the hextech timeline and now I can work with Viktor on what really matters.
"Do you need to run or something?" Viktor asked him with a sidelong look."Why?"“I can practically see you vibrating with energy," he stopped and gave Jayce a smile, "It is very exciting,"Jayce gave him a big grin. They were in a private area but he didn't know how Viktor felt about public displays of affection."I could kiss you right now," he said in a excited whisper. Viktor looked down either hallway and pulled Jayce down by the tie. Jayce was surprised but happily wrapped his arms around Viktor."Care to celebrate back at my place?" Viktor asked quietly as he released Jayce's tie. Jayce just nodded not wanting to let go of Viktor but also not wanting to stay in this hallway.Viktor started walking towards his room and Jayce quickly followed.Gods this is such a good day.
He thought to himself.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The door locked and Viktor pressed his hand to Jayce's chest pushing him backwards into the wall. Jayce reveled in the contact as Viktor ran his hand up Jayce's neck.

Metal hand gripped him tight and a masked face with golden glowing eyes stared impassively back at him.

Jayce flinched as the vision cleared. Viktor lowered his hand and took a half step back.
"Sorry," Viktor apologized softly.
"I'm... I'm fine," Jayce worked to slow his breathing, "Just... a recent problem,"

How was that terrifying and arousing at the same time?

"Should we stop?" Viktor asked concern on his face.
"No," he assured quickly, "Just had a flash? A memory? It was surprising was all,""Anything else I should know about before we continue?"
"I'm ticklish?" Jayce bit his lip, "And despite what it may have looked like I think I liked your hand on my throat,"
Viktor raised a skeptical eyebrow but stepped back in toward him. Jayce put his hands on Viktor's hips, mindful of his cane.
"So you like this?" Viktor slow wrapped his hand around Jayce's throat pushing his head against the wall.
The initial panic hit again but it also made his cock strain in his now tight clothes. He closed his eyes and felt the pressure increase. He let out a slightly strangled moan. Viktor chuckled softly and Jayce fluttered his eyes open to see Viktor watching him. A flicker of the white robot in the council chamber flashed before him.

As scared as that thing made me... That thing had agility and strength. So tall and powerful. And directly controlled by Viktor.

He felt the grip pull forward and he followed forward and down to kiss Viktor. He gripped Viktor's hips pulling them together.
Jayce felt Viktor's length pressed to him and moaned again. Viktor moved his hand to Jayce's jaw and started kissing Jayce's neck. He felt like he was on fire. His body was too hot and he wanted to feel so much more.
He started unbuttoning Viktor's vest. Viktor worked the other side of Jayce's neck as he was slowly undressed.
Soon Viktor was shirtless and Jayce was running his hands up that bare skin. Viktor sighed and leaned back so they could look at each other.
"I need to sit," Viktor whispered, "And you are wearing too much clothing,"
Jayce followed him to the bed and quickly took off his own shirt. Viktor watched rubbing the front of his pants. Jayce watched that hand, desire building.
He wanted more. Viktor ran his other hand down Jayce's chest and stomach and teasingly light hand over his bulge. Viktor smirked at him and scooted back on the bed and crooked a finger inviting him to lay on top of Viktor. He did exacy that and started kissing him. First on the mouth and slowly made his way across his jaw, each mole on his face and down his neck.
Viktor ran his fingers through Jayce's hair and gasped as Jayce reached his nipple. Jayce sucked and rolled before slightly biting getting another moan from Viktor.
Jayce moved to the other and felt Viktor buck into him. He pressed his body down more and felt Viktor grind up to him.
Jayce moved lower and shifted so he wouldn't put any pressure on Viktor's leg. He ran a hand up Viktor's side and rubbed his hand over Viktor's obvious arousal. A gasp escaped Viktor at the touch and Viktor was undoing his own belt and fly.
Jayce helped him remove the offending clothing and tossed them determined to enjoy the body before him. He returned to touching Viktor reverently moving his hands slowly over hips and thighs.
"Touch me, Jayce," Viktor said breathless.
Jayce hadn't been waiting for permission but he did run a hand up Viktor's inner thigh and slowly wrap around the base of Viktor's cock.
Slowly he ran his hand up the length of the shaft stopping to rub slowly across the whole head. A needy groan escaped Viktor who bit his bottom lip to try and stop it. Jayce slowly stroked with one hand while exploring the sensitivity of Viktor's balls. He gathered them in his hand and gently massaged them. Viktor was rolling his hips to try and get more friction from Jayce's hand.
He reached the tip again and slowly revealed the sensitive head. He lowered his mouth and flicked his tongue gently across it. He teased Viktor before slowly lowering and and taking it in his mouth. Viktor wrapped his hand in Jayce's hair, sending a thrill of pleasure through him. He could take nearly all of him in without choking. Jayce bobbed slowly drawing the suction in as he moved and flicked his tongue slowly around the tip.
"Faster," Viktor panted. His hand moving Jayce by his hair.
Jayce followed the motion and let Viktor set the faster pace. They continued like this through different paces, teasing Viktor close to climax.
Viktor pulled Jacye off him and caught his breath before saying, "My turn. Take off you clothes," Jayce wiped his mouth of spit and quickly stood taking his pants off.
Viktor sat up on the edge of the bed and put his knees between Jayce's legs. Jayce tried to keep still but the shivers of anticipation shook him. Feeling Viktor's hands on his skin was amazing. His erection was right there in front of Viktor.
Jayce shivered at those long fingers traced his hips and thighs. He moaned as Viktor ghosted his hand over his cock. He wanted more. He rocked his hips forward and bit his lip.
Viktor ran a finger up the underside of Jayce's cock. He felt arousal thrum through him at a simple touch. Viktor surprised him by gripping him at the base firmly, eliciting a gasp from him.
He stroked experimentally at first and then held Jayce's balls in the other hand. Jayce put his hands on Viktor's shoulders to brace himself.
He was overwhelmed with sensations and looked down right before Viktor put his mouth on him.
"Oh, V... Please,"
Viktor met his eyes, gave him a devilish grin before taking his whole length in one go. Jayce was so close to climax he shuddered and moaned, lost in sensations.
Jayce didn't know anything but Viktor's mouth in that moment. He was teetering so close to that beautiful edge. Viktor seems to know it and slowed before taking his mouth off Jayce. He whined at the loss.
"You make such lovely sounds," Viktor said, "I want to take you,"
Jayce shuddered as that sent a thrill through him.
"Get on the bed, all fours," Viktor pat the spot beside him. Jayce moved with wobbly legs to the bed.
Hands ran up the backs of his thighs causing him to inhale in anticipation. Viktor pulled Jayce's cheeks apart and ran a gentle finger over his hole. There was a pause and the sound of a drawer scraping open and then a snap as a lid was flicked open. A slick finger returned and slowly rolled over his hole again. Viktor also pulled gently on his sack and fondled his balls.
Jayce was trying desperately to hold back his climax. He was so close. Viktor put a finger in and the blissful moan Jayce released would have been embarrassing if he had a mind capable of thought.
Viktor slowly added a second finger and eventually a third. He was writhing into the touch wanting more. Viktor grabbed his hip firmly and pushed his fingers in further slowly moving them in and out, curling towards his prostate. A gutteral sound left Jayce as several pushes later Viktor was stroking that amazing sensation to a fire of pleasure.
"Spread your legs more," Viktor said quietly into his ear. Jayce sank wider lowering his hips. Viktor took his fingers out of Jayce and poured more lube down Jayce's crack and the delicious wet slapping sound of Viktor stroking himself filled the room a moment before the head of Viktor's cock was pressed to Jayce's hole.
Slowly Viktor pressed forward slightly. He was gripping one of Jayce's hips hard as he moved back before repeating the slow entrance until he was nearly fully in Jayce. Viktor moaned as he pressed in. Viktor leaned forward and kissed Jayce's back before dragging his hands down it. Jayce shivered and clenched around Viktor.
"Ready?“ Viktor asked shifting his hips slightly.
"Yeah," Jayce managed with a rocking of his hips into Viktor, "I'm yours,"
Viktor gripped both hips and pulled out slightly before driving back in hard. A shocked but pleasured sound escaped Jayce at that. He dropped to his forearms and gripped the bed sheet. More quick hard thrusts forced the air out of Jayce each with a jolt of pleasure. Viktor pumped into him with a measured pace, angling to hit his prostate. He grabbed Jayce by the hair and caused him to arch his back. Braced against his hands Jayce felt his whole body was only focused on the pleasure.
Viktor moved to hold Jayce by the throat which caused him to clench and moan. Viktor sped up his strokes and held Jayce's cock to stroke in the same pace. Jayce felt like he was hot metal being struck by a hammer at the forge. Each stroke, jolt and clench forming him into something new by Viktor's hands and cock.
He felt Viktor release in him and it overwhelmed him to push right over his own edge and feel that blissful release. He shuddered as Viktor's hand slowed but his cock was still firmly in Jayce. He panted and could hear Viktor moan as Jayce involuntarily clenched around him.
Viktor slowly pulled out of him and slumped forward on him. Jayce was content to stay there forever just like that but Viktor was wiping them both down before tapping him on the side.
"Move, I want to lay down,"
Jayce rolled to his side as Viktor limped to sit on the bed and they shifted to lay together on the too small of bed for the two of them. Jayce stayed on his side and leaned up against the wall holding Viktor to him.
They relaxed for a while sharing kisses and soft touches. Jayce couldn't help but stare at Viktor.

I never thought we'd get the chance to do this. I love him so much.

Viktor looked drowsy and was starting to drift asleep using Jayce as a pillow.

This could be our every day. Him sleeping in my arms. The sex was great too.

He gently kissed Viktor's forehead and they both settled into a nap.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

A knock woke them.
"Shit," Viktor jolted awake. He looked slightly surprised at Jayce and blinked as the second knock came, "Just a moment!" he hurriedly pulled on a pair of pants and a button up he could easily grab from the edge of the bed, "Where is my cane?" he rummaged hurriedly and found it.
Viktor looked disheveled but answered the door with clothes on. Jayce was impressed.
"Yes?" he answered with only the enough of the door open to stick his head through.
"A letter for you sir," a young girl's voice said quietly.
"Thank you," he took the letter and shut the door quickly. Double checking the lock before opening the letter.
Jayce watched him as he quickly read the letter. He went from tense to relaxed in seconds. He looked up and froze staring at Jayce.
"Good news?" Jayce asked.
"Good?" Viktor said distracted, "That bed is too small for you," he said coming back to his senses slowly, "You look..." he just stared not able to finish the sentence.
"Come here," Jayce waved him over. It was nice to know he had a similar effect on Viktor as Viktor had on him. Viktor sat on the bed and leaned over to kiss Jayce again.
"I like this look for you," Viktor whispered.
"Yeah? Naked and in your bed?“ Jayce whispered back stealing another kiss.
"That and covered in what will certainly be bruises," he traced the red marks on his hips that matched Viktor's handprint, "used and exhausted,"
Jayce put his hand on Viktor's thigh. Viktor kissed him hard and Jayce sighed into it. When they pulled apart Viktor's lips were a darker red and his own felt tender.
"I'll be moving soon. If this letter is any indication," he held it up between two fingers handing it over to Jayce.
Jayce took it and immediately recognized the handwriting as Mel's.

Viktor,

Thank you for your proposal. I have secured a facility for your research and development project. Please note that our contract will be ready for first review this evening.

I invite you and Jayce Talis to join me for dinner to review and discuss the contract and project further.

Sincerely,

Councilor Mel Medarda
Jayce read it twice and noted the address at the bottom as one of the restaurants Councilors liked to use for meetings.

I'll need to clean up and get some fresh clothes.

He looked to Viktor who looked like he wanted to devour Jayce. The look made him shiver.
"Looks like we have dinner plans," Jayce said quietly. Viktor hummed but didn't seem to care what Jayce had to say, only interested in looking over his whole body.
"You are handsome," Viktor complimented, "Did we do this before in your original timeline?" he asked as he ran a hand over Jayce's side to his thighs.
"Unfortunately, no," Jayce watched him run that hand back up his thigh slowing to press into the tender marks on his hips.
"What a shame. All the time together and we never shared this," Viktor was thoughtful, "Maybe it was a good thing you changed the timeline,"
"Yeah," Jayce agreed quietly as he inhaled sharply at the pressure on his hips, "We were too focused on our work,"
"I have not let myself be with anyone for a while now," he met Jayce's gaze, "Too busy working,"
"That's a mistake. You should enjoy life," Jayce pulled Viktor into a kiss, "Enjoy this... with me," he sat up and held Viktor from behind, running his hands up Viktor's chest.
"You are intoxicating, Jayce," Viktor closed his eyes as he enjoyed the sensations. Jayce kissed his neck and back as he slowly massaged Viktor's shoulders and back. He could feel the tension leaving Viktor.
Jayce held Viktor for a long while. He was pretty sure Viktor had fallen asleep and refused to disturb him.

I could hold him like this forever if he'd let me. How could life have been so easily different? I suppose I'm the one that's different here. Never did have the courage to tell him how I felt.

"Jayce?" Viktor broke the quiet.
"Hmm?" he hummed contentedly.
"We should clean up. I'm wearing yesterday's clothes and we have to be presentable in a few hours,""Fine," he grudginly untangled himself from Viktor, "I'll need to get some clothes,"
"Your personal items were sent to your mother," Viktor reminded him, "Anything that passed inspection at least,"
"Right," for him that had happened so very long ago.

I'll get to see mom again. He was twisted with guilt. He'd barely made an effort to see her the last few years. She knew he was busy but still wrote to him at least once a week. When he became a councilor he had even less time. Then all hell broke loose and he didn't even check on her.

"What is the matter?" Viktor asked concerned.
"Just haven't seen her in a long time," Jayce frowned, "I haven't exactly been the best son," he didn't meet Viktor's eyes until he felt a hand on his shoulder.
"As far as she knows you were just gone all night after having your dreams crushed," Viktor gave a small smile, "She will be happy to have you home,"
Jayce smiled back and Viktor headed to the bathroom. Jayce took the time to find his clothes and put them in a pile.
"You should shower before heading out," Viktor said as he entered the room.
"Yeah," he took his pile of clothes and stood, "I'll be quick," he kissed Viktor as they passed.

Jayce nervously knocked on the door to their home. One he hadn't been to for many years.
"Just a moment!" his mother's voice called out, "Oh! Jayce!" Thank goodness," she pulled him into a tight hug. Jayce hugged her back.
"I'm sorry, mom," he said, pressed into her hair.

Sorry for not coming home last night. Sorry for making you worry. Sorry for not making better progress. Sorry for not visiting or writing back sometimes. Sorry for always being busy.

"I'm just glad you're safe. I was worried something may have happened," she pulled away to look up at him, "Come in, you must be starving,"
He walked in following her to the kitchen. It was a modest home. He remembered it fondly. She had worked so hard to get them here. To make sure he got into the academy. Running the family business and raising him was no easy feat.
Jayce smiled as he watched her fix him some food. It was about lunch time and he hadn't eaten anything all day. A couple cups of tea and water really wasn't enough.
"What were you doing last night?" she asked conversationally but with that tinge of 'tell me or I will find out eventually' edge only mothers seem to know. He sat down at the table.
"Went back to my apartment... What's left of it at least," he started, "I met someone,"
She looked up from her chopping for a moment with raised eyebrows, listening intently.
"He's the dean's assistant. He told me all my equipment was getting destroyed this morning," she gave him a sad knowing look, "But we talked and..." he watched her frying up some fish, "We'll be working together if our proposal to Councilor Medarda is finalized with a contract," he said.
"What kind of proposal?" she looked up at him, "Are you sure you're ready? You can take some time..."
Oh mom you have no idea how incredibly long I've waited for this.

"You were right saying I wasn't in my right state of mind. I... Almost gave up last night," he met her eyes. She looked so tender and sad for him. She rushed to him and pulled him into a hug. He gladly returned it.
"Oh my boy," she pressed a kiss to the top of his head and held him tight, "I am so sorry,"
"It's not your fault, mom," he consoled, "I feel relieved that I can't continue down the path I was,"
"It was your dream. Everything you've worked on all your life... How can you have spoke so passionately before and now leave it?"“I spoke with Heimerdinger and... It was revealing. The last time he saw magic it destroyed everything in its path. There are other ways to help people,"
"That assistant must few had a very good conversation with you," she cupped his face, "I love you,"
"I love you too," he hugged her again before letting her step back to the stove.
"Now what is this new project?"

A couple hours later he had told his mom about the new project, hopes for the future and a promise to bring this "darling young man you like" for dinner some time. He was getting cleaned up and ready when he was suddenly crying.
His emotions had been all over the place today and he'd barely slept. He leaned on the bathroom counter letting the razor clatter.

So many chances to fix it and this is the only way I can. How long was I in that chasm? I sometimes feel like I'm still there and this is the hallucination. What if one day I am looped back to last night?

He panicked at that. His breathing was shakey and he slipped to the floor.

What am I even doing?

He clutched his head in anguish. Every relationship and change made it such much harder to deal with the fact that he was here. Back where it started and now gets to live the better version.

I don't deserve this. It's my fault everyone was hurt. This shouldn't be my reward. I was ready to kill Viktor. Why only now do I get to have Viktor in my life the way I wanted before? Could I have saved him from the Hexcore? I promised him I'd destroy it. I've done that...

"Jayce?" his mother knocked on the door gently, "Everything alright?"
"Uh... Yeah," he blinked, "Just finishing up," he said in a tight and scratchy voice.
"Jayce?" she sounded concerned, "I'm coming in ok?" she didn't wait for him to reply. She kneeled down and hugged him, rocking slightly, "It's ok baby,"
She hugged him for a long time as he sobbed. He muttered incoherently as he processed the grief. The grief of a lifetime of work being the cause of the world's destruction. The loss of his friend, partner, and the one person he loved the most. That because of him Viktor was so radically changed.
"You can make different choices," she said as she pet his hair, "Just the here and now, Jayce. You can let the past rest,"
"You really think so?" he asked, voice small like a child woken from a nightmare, "That I can keep people safe?"
"Of course," she pulled away so they could look at each other, "You have much sadness. I wish I could help you more,"
"You've helped more than you know. I've been a bad son. Focused on work and studying-"
"I know you are passionate. It's one of the many things I love about you. Now, you have a dinner to get ready for. It will help shape your future," she helped him to his feet, "You're going to do great, Jayce. I believe in you. Don't be too hard on yourself,"
Sniffling he nodded and took in a big breath. I can do this. Just dinner with Mel and Viktor. About the future of my life. No big deal.
He shook his head and tried to shake the guilt and sadness from him but it lingered.

Suppose it always will.

He washed his face and finished shaving. Styled his hair while his mom watched with a warm smile.
"You look handsome, mijo," she said smoothing out his shirt, "You'll make a good impression,""I don't know how long I'll be out for," he said kissing her cheek, "Don't wait up for me,"
"Be safe," she said as he grabbed his bag and headed out the door.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Viktor and Jayce met outside the restaurant like they'd agreed. Viktor wore the nicest shirt he owned. It was a black shirt and black trousers worn with his academy jacket. His hair had been brushed and swept in his usual look. Jayce knew they had both needed to upgrade their wardrobes after the Hextech project was approved. So this was the best they both could do. Jayce had a Talis coat of arms on the back of his coat and wore a simple shirt and vest combo underneath.
Viktor nodded to him and lead the way in. Jayce was nervous. He'd been to this restaurant several times and knew there was lots of privacy for the councilors and wealthy citizens of Piltover to conduct meetings. It also meant that he was terribly out of place. Especially after the most recent public appearance.

Mel is making a statement of support by having us meet her here.

He followed as a server guided them through the restaurant and to a private room. Mel was standing beside the table and being served wine. She delicately sipped on it before greeting them.
"So glad you two could join me," she gestured for them to take their seats. Jayce let Viktor choose and sat next to him on his good side."Thank you for inviting us, Councilor Medarda," Jayce said formally.
"Please, between the three of us just call me Mel," she took her seat, rested her elbows on the table and steepled her fingers together, "Why bring this proposal to me?"
“You have been trying to improve the lives of both Piltover and Zaun. A clear vision of a unified future," Jayce said."If we are going to ask for support we should go for the person with the biggest philanthropic heart," Viktor added.
"I see," she looked between them, "Viktor you could have done this project before. Why now?"
"The time was right," he shrugged, "If I can't have magic then I'll have the next best thing," Mel looked to Jayce.
"And he's the next best thing? An eccentric troublemaker?" she said it like it was a fact but she had a hint of a smile on her lips.
"A risk taker and someone willing to push known science..." Viktor looked to Jayce, "Yes, that is second to literal magic," he too had a small smile on his face.
Jayce held his eyes for a moment. I love you. Was all his mind could chant.
"Well, it does seem that time is right. I just heard about a medical facility that closed last week due to the lead doctor retiring. The staff that hasn't already found work may be interested in working with you. I have already purchased the building with the equipment and furnishings," she handed over a folio with blueprints and layouts of the two story building with an itemized list of equipment included.
"This would be perfect," Jayce said reviewing the equipment, "I don't know how to use all of these machines but if some of the staff can return we can make immediate headway on whichever project we start on,""There are some things we might need to modify but it is a good start. Would we be able to add a forge?" Viktor asked.
"Possibly," Mel nodded to Elora, "Elora will be taking notes of any addendums or additions we may need to add to both facilities and contract,"
"Do you have any requests of us?" Viktor asked passing the folio back to Elora.
"Yes," Mel looked to Jayce, "You are on very thin probationary ice, Mr. Talis,"
"Just Jayce, please,"
"Jayce," she nodded before continuing, "It is a risk to associate with you," she leaned back in her seat, "Like Viktor, I see that as potential. A little boundary setting and conduct agreements would change this for you. I have outlined some of the parameters that will help you focus on your work, ease council concern of you working on unauthorized projects, and eventually get you some accolades," Elora handed over two pages of rules and expectations.
Jayce read over it. Generally similar language as to the Academy's code of conduct. Don't plagerize work, be respectful and courteous. No criminal activity.
What was different for him was work must be supervised at all times by approved staff. Viktor, Heimerdinger and Mel were listed as approved personelle additional names to be cleared as needed for the scope of the project. He must return home to the care of his mother every night unless otherwise approved where he is to be accompanied by an approved personnel or enforcer. Probationary period of 6 months at which will be reviewed. End of probation depending on good behavior.

Six months of probation. That's pretty lenient.

"How strict is the time that he works? I tend to stay up all night working on projects," Viktor asked, "Does he have to be walked home every night too?" Viktor sassed at the rule.
"If work is supervised through unconventional hours I don't see why we can't make sure that he's at least sleeping at home. He has been remit to the care of his mother,"
"Hmm," Viktor thought for a moment, "Fine, it will hopefully only be 6 months and then he can move closer to the lab,"
"Speaking of which," she handed sketches and a small list of amenities to Viktor, "As lead of this project you are welcome to the on-site quarters. It's a modest suite but much more accommodating than your current studio at the academy,"
Viktor looked over the sketches. It was at least three times bigger than the space he currently had. As he finished a page he handed it over to Jayce. Two bedrooms, a full bathroom, separate tub and shower, washing and drying machines, and a much bigger kitchen with a stove.
Jayce was impressed with the housing coming with the project.
"How much will this cost me to live in?" Viktor asked cautiously.
"It is a perk of the job," she gave him a smile, "I imagine you don't want to be too far from your work,""This..." Viktor looked overwhelmed, "This is too much,"
"You are welcome to find an apartment nearby," she said confused.
"It's too much space. I..." Viktor averted his eyes. He'd never had that much space to call his own before.
"Ah," Mel understood immediately, "Why don't you see if you like it first and make a decision on if you're moving in or not. I'm sure the Dean will let you stay on campus for a little longer.
"That is too far a walk for me everyday," he frowned, "I accept these accommodations as part of my benefits,"The three of them continued tweaking and adding the agreement through the course of dinner. Jayce had relaxed and Viktor and Mel seemed to be getting along well enough. Both of them were quick to understand each other's quips as they moved to less contract agreements to more project focus.
"So you've made a brace before, Jayce?" Mel asked.
"Yeah it was a rough prototype that we never got to finalize," Jayce thought on the brace he'd designed for Viktor that he eventually had to use on himself from the parts of his hammer, "It was made in a rush. I'd love to give it another try,"
"Mobility devices are difficult to come by in the Undercity. Most people use makeshift canes or struggle without. Others only get modifications through crime lords. Then they owe their lives to the people who gave them their arm or leg,"
"That does seem like a rough life," Mel sipped her drink.
"There are other issues in Piltover," Jayce added, "There's no ramps or lifts that are convenient. Viktor can walk up stairs. But what about someone who is in a wheelchair? They wouldn't be able to get into the council chambers easily. Let alone being able to manage travel across the city,""I like the direction some of these projects are moving. What about medical projects?"
Viktor spent the next 20 minutes talking about different blood testing projects, air quality testing and seeing which pollutants cause what diseases or illnesses.

He's really thought a lot about all this. Guess it's been his life's work to make progress. He's also going to benefit from making these big changes.

Mel seemed impressed by the scope of their ideas and the excitement both of them had.
"Tomorrow I will have the next draft of the contract ready. And I'm sure it will be very quickly a signed deal. Are you two ready for your lives to change?"
"Yes," Jayce said with conviction.
"Absolutely," Viktor agreed, "Your efforts and vision will help us achieve greatness," Viktor said.
"I do have one more question," Mel said before they finished their meeting, "What is your relationship?"
"Relationship?" Viktor asked slightly flustered, "What makes you think-"
"I do not mean to pry, Viktor," she placed a gentle hand on his, "Only that if anything should be safe guarded against a lover's quarral or anything like that. I have seen you two interact tonight. I know there is something between you,"
Jayce looked to Viktor who looked like he wanted nothing more than this conversation to end or burst into flames and never deal with it.
"We're still working things out. I'm sure disagreements will come up but we can maintain professionalism," Jayce answered.
"My apologies for pressing," she looked them over thoughtfully, "I think you two work well together,"
"Thank you," he gave her a warm smile. Kind, understanding and observant. How could I not have fallen for her.
"Is there anything else?" Viktor asked with closed eyes.
"When we sign the contract you can get a tour of the new facilities and living quarters," Mel said, "Otherwise the night is yours gentlemen," she gave a little wink to Jayce as she stood. He waited for Viktor to stand before he got up.
"I look forward to our next meeting. Good night," Viktor walked out of the restaurant and down a block before he leaned against a wall and sighed, eyes closed. Jayce had a little smirk as he waited for Viktor.

Seeing them interact had been fun. They are so quick and smart. If we can make this project work she'll be amazing. Ohhh no, Viktor looks like he's about to be sick.

Viktor controlled his breathing and tilted his head back.
"What should I have told her?" Viktor asked quietly.
"Whatever you want?" Jayce replied, "As long as I'm around you I don't care what we define things as," Jayce answered honestly.
"What do you think this is?" he asked with no heat to the question, "I do not want a casual relationship with you," he admitted watching Jayce carefully. Jayce smiled at that.
"Not casual..." I can live with that, "Do you want to declare me yours?" he stood in front of Viktor.
"... Yes, but I do not want you limited just for my sake," Viktor frowned, "I am not always able to..." he gestured to his groin.
"I get it," he leaned his shoulder against the wall facing Viktor, "I'd be with you even if that never happened again," he gave a little sideways smile, "I'd like for it to happen again... when you're ready,"Viktor rolled his eyes at him but smiled. He leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Viktor's lips.
"I told you before I am ok with sharing. Especially if it means you are satisfied,"
"You could stand the thought of me with others?" Jayce tested.
"Could you?" Viktor countered, "See me in the arms of another and having an emotional connection with them?"
He thought about Viktor in the arms of someone else. Their legs tangled and moaning in pleasure together.
"They'd better treat you right. Make you happy," he looked away as he said the next part, "It would also be incredibly hot to see,"
Viktor shook his head with a small smile. Jayce knew he was a sucker for anything to do with Viktor. He hated admitting it but even through all of Viktor's transformations he was attracted to him. As frightening and inhuman some of them were it was still Viktor.
"Jayce, as far as my experience has gone we only started speaking two days ago. I have thrown my fate in with yours, fucked you, and now jumping into a relationship. That is a short time frame,"
"I know," Jayce spoke softly, "I've gotten to know you for years. Yearned for you. Sought your approval and wanted you by my side through it all. I can wait as long as you need Viktor. I'm not going anywhere unless you tell me to,"
Viktor studied him for a long moment.
"You have such strong loyalty to me," he said, "What did I do in your timeline to earn this?"
Jayce took Viktor's hand in his, "You saved me and made life possible. Everyday an adventure of discovery or testing the limits of what we knew. Just being you. I fell in love with you everyday for many years. Little by little became a part of my life that I never wanted to remove,"
"I see," Viktor whispered. Jayce pressed a kiss to Viktor's hand, "Then let us be partners in more than just work,"
"I'd like that," Jayce's heart swelled and he pulled Viktor in for a hug. They held eachother for a long moment. Jayce was just happy to have Viktor in his arms.
They made their way back to Viktor's studio both excitedly discussing possible plans for the future projects, thinking of equipment they may need, and what might be possible needs they hadn't thought of.
Jayce closed the door as Viktor headed to his desk to start writing down what they'd discussed.
"We should also get feedback from people about what would improve their lives. Maybe get a consult from the Undercity?" Jayce suggested.
"Am I not enough?" Viktor asked pausing in his writing, "I'm from the Undercity,"
Echos of a moment in a balcony with Jayce and Viktor discussing the dangerous trip Viktor had made during Jayce's blockade flashed across his mind at those words. He paused for a very long moment shaking his head.
"You are focused on what your life experiences hold. But you can get around. What needs does a person completely bedridden really need?" Jayce replied calmly, "We could guess but it'd be better to work more directly with people. Visit them in their home and see what they struggle with and how to directly improve their lives,"Viktor looked up at him and slowly blinked before giving a soft 'hmph' and returning to the notes where he added 'liaison from Undercity'.
Jayce took that as a win and continued reminding Viktor of what they'd brainstormed on their walk.
In typical fashion they both stayed up very late taking turns writing or sketching ideas in the notebook. They both ended up sitting in bed leaning against eachother slowly falling asleep

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Jayce woke slowly. His arms pressed against a wall and a warmth pressed to his back and an arm wrapped around his waist.
He smiled realizing that Viktor was spooning him. He could hear the shallow even breathing of sleep from behind him. Slowly moving his hand he placed it on top of Viktor's and caressed it.

This is all I wanted for years. Dreamed of it. And now I have it. Possibly finding a cure for him... We could have this for a long time.

Viktor's breathing changed slightly and Jayce knew he was awake with a sharp inhale and tense body behind him.
"Good morning," Jayce gently squeezed Viktor's hand.
"Morning," Viktor pressed his head to Jayce's back, "I am not used to waking with someone else,"
"It wasn't really planned this time," Jayce said with an apologitic tone.
"It is... fine," he shifted slightly, "Just makes some things a little more awkward,"
"Awkward?" Jayce asked trying to look over his shoulder at Viktor, "What do you mean?"
Viktor shifted so their hips aligned. Jayce felt a hard lump press into his ass. They both had fallen asleep wearing last night's clothes but that didn't stop Jayce from pushing back into that pressure and enjoying the hand that moved to his hip immediately.
"Jayce," Viktor nearly growled, "I want you. You have to do all the work this time,"
"I can manage that," Jayce rolled his hips giving more friction to Viktor who held his hips and rocked into him slightly. Jayce was hard and ready to please Viktor everyway he could.
He gave another slow roll of his hips before shifting so he was laying on top of Viktor, careful not to put too much weight on him or his leg.
Jayce looked down at Viktor with a loving smile on his face. Viktor had desire in his eyes as Jayce leaned down for a kiss. Viktor met his lips and pulled him down for more, plundering his mouth with verocity. Jayce kissed him back in a similar fashion. Hands roamed and grabbed, tongues chasing the flavor of the other and panting breaths before diving back in for more.
Jayce sat straddling Viktor, shirt pulled down his shoulders arms still in sleeves, buttons all undone revealing his chest and stomach. Viktor ran his hands up Jayce's exposed skin as they both caught their breath.
Gods he looks perfect like this. Jayce admired Viktor's messed hair and flushed face. Little red marks from Jayce's sucking at his neck were showing and Jayce got a thrill thinking about them.
"You're perfect," Jayce whispered before taking another tender kiss. Jayce removed his shirt and shifted so he could help Viktor take his off too.
"Ride me," Viktor said between kisses, "I want to see your face as you ride my cock," Jayce shifted his hips to rub himself on Viktor, "Make all those little sounds as you are filled by me," Jayce felt the shivers of pleasure and anticipation at Viktor's words.
He shifted to kissing down Viktor's body. He made quick work of Viktor's pants and underwear. He admired the soft pale skin contrasting against his darker skin as he ran his hands up Viktor's thighs. He kissed up one thigh to hip before repeating on the other side. He teasingly wasn't touching Viktor's cock. He ghosted his hands over but no real contact.
A strong hand gripped his hair and made him look up quickly at Viktor. Viktor was breathing hard and was done being teased if the look of annoyance was anything to go by.
"Enough teasing," the commanding tone while gripping his hair rushed desire to Jayce's cock, "Prepare yourself," he let go of Jayce's hair and he had to take a moment to remember to breathe.
"Yes, sir," Jayce said in a breathy voice as he moved to get the lubricant. He returned quickly to the bed and Viktor's eyes followed him with a predatory glint. Jayce shivered and that look caused his desire to intensify.
He kneeled with legs wide beside Viktor on the bed and slowly coated his fingers and inserted the first. Viktor watched him, hand on his own cock slowly stroking as Jayce stretched himself.
He pushed a second in and gasped as Viktor wrapped his other hand around Jayce stroking him slowly. Jayce rode his fingers for a bit more before adding a third. He moaned at the stretch and the stroking from Viktor.
He slowly pulled his fingers out, ready to take Viktor. His slick fingers got an extra drizzle before he took Viktor's cock in hand and stroked to coat him completely. Viktor kept his hand stroking Jayce. Once Jayce was satisfied with the coverage of lube he shifted so he was straddling Viktor again. As he sat Viktor's cock slid between his cheeks teasing both of them with the contact.
Jayce rocked into Viktor's hand as he started guiding Viktor to him. He found the perfect angle and slowly pushed down on Viktor. Careful not to put his full weight down on Viktor he lowered himself down.
Both of them moaned at the feeling and Jayce let his head fall back in pleasure. He loved this feeling of connection with Viktor. It was overwhelming. He needed more. He shifted to make more friction and then started moving slowly building up the pace.
Viktor's hands gripped Jayce's hips and pulled him down harder. He made little whines and incoherent words fell from him. He couldn't think past the pressure in him and was so close to climax.
"That's it," Viktor said seductively as he stroked at the same pace Jayce was riding, "Let go,"
Jayce looked down at Viktor, he looked close to his own climax too, lips parted and muscles strained as if holding back.
Jayce didn't stop. He rode as he felt the edge of his climax just a moment away. Viktor maintained his pace but also ran his nails down Jayce's thigh. That was the last bit to push him over. A gutteral moan escaped him as he burst over Viktor's hand and then felt Viktor tense beneath him as a warmth filled him. He clenched as the last of their orgasms rippled through them. He stilled slowly resting with Viktor still in him.
They both panted and Jayce gave him a blissful smile. Viktor reached up and caressed Jayce's cheek. He leaned into it and closed his eyes.
"You are beautiful," Viktor murmured. Jayce slowly opened his eyes and drank in the soft loving look with a twist of wistful amazement Viktor was giving him. He leaned forward and kissed Viktor. In doing so Viktor slid out and both moaned in complaint. Jayce kissed him again and they slowly shifted so they could both lay on the bed together.
Jayce rested his head on Viktor's chest and relaxed into the soft touches as Viktor ran his hand through Jayce's short hair.
They were quiet for a long while. Jayce was content and let his thoughts drift.

A life together. Maybe I can move in to his new place when my probation is over. Last time we had spent so much time in the lab I'm surprised we even bothered with our own spaces.

"I wonder," Viktor broke the quiet, "Are you familiar with dynamics?"
"Of course," he smiled at that. Bedroom talk with science and theories. "Thermodynamics, motion and force,"
"... Not scientific dynamics," Viktor answered slowly, "Intimate dynamics. Roles?"
"Oh," he was puzzled for a moment. Like who does what? Why is he asking? "Hadn't really thought about it? Why?"
"Just..." Viktor hesitated, "Not sure if you were knowledgeable or if you were just working off instinct,"
"What do you want to ask me? You can ask me anything and I won't judge you for it," he turned so he could look at Viktor.
"Ah," he furrowed his brow, "You just... You have..." he closed his eyes and grimaced before continuing, "I am going to ask this inelegantly. Are you a submissive exclusively?""Oh!" Jayce was picking up on direction of the conversation, "A bit of both?" he admitted. Viktor opened his eyes, "Sometimes it's to the person. Sometimes just the mood," he smiled back at Viktor, "I like it when you tell me what to do and pull my hair,"
"I noticed," Viktor smirked.
"What about you?" Jayce asked curious.
"It takes a careful and special person for me to be vulnerable enough to submit. I like to be in control," Viktor said, "Careful with my body while also pushing me,"
"A delicate balance," Jayce said thoughtfully, "I hope I have been careful enough with you," Jayce was immediately concerned he'd hurt Viktor's back.
"You were perfect," Viktor assured followed with a kiss, "You followed instructions and feel fantastic,"
"Thanks," Jayce took another kiss, "Would you want me to switch it up for you?““We'll see," Viktor chuckled, "I think we should get today started,"
They slowly got up and rinsed off together. Viktor's shower was small but they were able to soap eachother up and rinse without too much distraction.
Eventually they were leaning over the desk looking over their ideas from the night before. They were adding a few more details when there was a knock at the door. They looked to each other and Viktor moved to answer it. Jayce took the seat at the desk and waited to see who it was.
"Hello? Oh!" Viktor nervously looked over at Jayce, "Give me just a moment," he said to Jayce and slipped out. Nervous and nosey he stood and waited at the door. He tried to overhear who Viktor was talking to but it was too quiet and muffled. He moved back to the chair and waited, knee bouncing.
A few moments later Viktor entered and was followed by Sky Young. Jayce was surprised. He wasn't expecting to see her if he was honest. Sadness and guilt washed over him before he shook them away.

She's never met you before. Make a good first impression.

"Jayce," Viktor started, "This is my friend Sky," he gestured to her, "And this is Jayce, the one I was telling you about," she stepped forward and he stood to shake her hand. They did and she had a big smile she was trying to hide.
"So nice to meet you!" she said friendly as usual.
"Nice to meet you too. I've heard of you from Viktor," she shot Viktor a skeptical glance, "Only good things I swear. I heard you're in the running as Viktor's replacement,"
"Am his replacement actually!" she said excitedly, "Came here to tell Viktor the good news!"
“Congratulations!“ Jayce gave her a big smile and a friendly hand on her shoulder.
"Yes, very good news," Viktor smiled too.
"I didn't realize he'd have company today," she gave Jayce a sly wink that Viktor couldn't see, "Glad to meet Viktor's new partner,"
"It's wonderful to meet a friend of Viktor's," Jayce replied smoothly. Viktor looked very peeved that she had sprung this introduction, "We should celebrate your promotion,"
"That'd be lovely," Sky replied, "Perhaps tonight?"
“That depends on our contract negotiations," Viktor cut in taking the seat at the desk and propping his leg out.
"That fast?" Sky asked surprised.
"Councilor Medarda does not waste her time," Viktor said, "She plans on the second draft being ready today. We had revisions that will make things better than expected,"
"That's exciting! I'll have to stop by and see what all you have to work with,"
"Yeah, maybe you can help us get Viktor settled into his new place," Jayce put a hand on Viktor's shoulder as he stood beside him.
"New place?"
"It comes with the lab. Private quarters," Viktor said dismissively, "They are large from the floorplan I saw,"
"That's good news," she'd picked up on the bitterness in his voice, "Isnt it?"
“I suppose," he sighed, "It is... too much,""You're the lead on this project and that comes with some benefits," Sky said.
"Besides you'll just end sleeping in the lab anyway," Jayce teased, jovially.
"As that may be," he shrugged Jayce's hand off his shoulder annoyed, "I'm sure I'll be expected to entertain there occasionally,"
"You haven't seen it yet. Maybe you'll love it," Sky said optimistically.
Viktor gave her a flat look and rolled his eyes. Jayce liked the banter between them.
I remember a little of this but it seems... Better than before.

They chatted for a while before Jayce remembered he was supposed to check in with his mom. He said his goodbye to Sky and gave Viktor a long look.
"I'll see you later. Send a message to my mom's if Mel gets the contract ready." Jayce said. Sky raised her eyebrows at the causal use of 'Mel'. Viktor nodded but stared at him for a long moment.
"One more thing," he stood and took the few steps to Jayce unaided. He pulled Jayce down for a kiss that Jayce readily gave. They parted and all Jayce could focus on was those eyes looking back at him intensely, "Be careful,"
"Will be," Jayce returned in a whisper. He didn't want to go. Near Viktor is where he belonged.

Gods he's beautiful. I love this man so much. Damn it. I have to go.

Jayce reluctantly moved away from Viktor. He gave a little wave to Sky as he took one last glimpse at Viktor before heading out the door.

He had a nice afternoon with his mother. She scolded him slightly for the delayed return but smirked when he told her they'd "been up late brainstorming and planning."They headed to the market and some people recognized him. He felt like he should have slunk away, retreating from the public shame but this event was so far removed from the Man of Progress he'd become that it didn't feel real.
"Mrs. Talis," an enforcer greeted them midday, "Hope your day is going well,"
"It is," his mother greeted back with polite curiosity, "How may I help you?"
"Technically, I have a message for your son," the enforcer said, "Supposed to report to Councilor Medarda's office,"
"Oh, thank you," Jayce said, excitement building.

The contract draft must be done! Maybe we get to see the lab tonight!

"Thank you," his mother also said, "He'll be there shortly," the enforcer looked at both of them suspiciously.
"I'd feel better escorting him to make sure he arrives," the enforcer crossed their arms and stared at him.
"He is in my care. I will personally make sure-"
"With all respect ma'am I'd just be following you both to make sure he arrived. You can come with if you want but he's not leaving my sight until he's delivered to the councilor's office,""This is unnecessary," she frowned, "This was requested by Councilor Medarda?"
The enforcer looked uncertainly at her, "No, but I'm doing my due diligence in protecting the city from this danger, ""It's ok, Mom," he said, "It's just to sign the contract,""Are you sure?" she pulled him in for a hug.
"I'll be fine," he reassured her, "I'll let you know when I get back how it goes,"
"You should bring your partner for dinner to celebrate,"
"I'll invite him," he smiled and headed off to Mel's office enforcer in tow.
The enforcer said nothing the entire way there. Jayce didn't bother trying to have a conversation.

This enforcer has good reason not to trust me. I'm surprised I haven't faced more of this. Have been shut away with Viktor most of my time.

They arrived at Mel's office and the enforcer knocked. Elora opened the door.
"How may I help you?" she said to the enforcer, her eyes flicked to Jayce for a moment.
"Jayce Talis was requested to see the Councilor,""He didn't need an escort officer," Elora shook her head, "Come in Mr. Talis,"
"Will you need further assistance Miss?" the enforcer asked.
"No, thank you. Your services are not required," she let Jayce pass and closed the door behind him, "Apologies, they were only to deliver the message not a full escort,""I understand. I expect public opinion of me is pretty low," he replied, "Is Viktor here?"
“Not yet," Elora checked her notes, "Hopefully no busy body enforcer escorts him too," she gestured for him to take a seat. He did and she brought a tray with water and glasses, "You are much earlier than anticipated it will be a bit before the Councilor arrives,"
"I don't mind. Thank you, Elora," Jayce replied kindly. She moved off to her own work station in the next room.
Mel kept her office mostly empty. The large room was reflective of her station and wealth. She'd explained it to him once.

"What should I do with my new accommodations?" he asked her shortly after being added to the council.

"Whatever you'd like," she walked around the provided space there was a larger open space with a desk pushed towards the balcony doors. Mel looked thoughtfully at the placement, "What kind of message do you want to send? Power? Authority? Progress?"

“I will be holding meetings here," he leaned against the desk looking into the rest of the room, "I
want people to feel like this is where the future is being built. Maybe some comfy seating?"

“A collobrative space for sharing ideas?" she asked standing in front of him,
"Perhaps some of your inventions on display,"

Her proximity to him distracted his thoughts. He gently touched her cheeks and let his hands drift down her shoulders. She held his gaze with hers and gave him that soft inviting smile of hers. He pulled her in for a kiss and felt her melt into him.

"- just in case it's needed. " Mel opened the door to her office, jolting him back to the present. She was leading a small group of people into her space. She glanced over to see him and gave him a confused but polite nod, "I'll be right with you, Mr. Talis,"
She moved to her desk and stood on the far side. Elora came out of the side room with a stack of papers and a book.
The people glanced at him slightly with mild looks before returning to the conversation. From what he could gather they were from a guild working on roads on the more rural parts of Piltover. Their projects were varied but overall were needed. Mel handled their quibbling well and made quick work of the mess of project approvals.
"Thank you all for your time and effort," Mel concluded the meeting. They murmured their goodbyes and filtered out as they gathered their things. Except for one who seemed to be the head of the guild.
"Please attend our annual award ceremony. Your presence would be a sign of our growth and commitment to the city," the tall man said in a stuffy posh voice as he gave her a blue sealed letter, "We will make sure to thank you formally there as well,"
"Thank you, Randall," Mel accepted the letter, "I assume you'd like a speech as well?"
"No pressure," he gestured with an open hand, "But if you would indulge us it would be most appreciated,"
"Of course. I'll make sure one is prepared," she gently put a hand on his arm and guided him out as they spoke, "Safe travels and I'll be speaking with you soon,"
She shut the door behind him and paused for a moment.
She's gathering her thoughts and resetting. He has seen this shift many times as they worked together as councilors. He stood and waited for her.
"Thank you for your patience through the end of that, Jayce," Mel said as she turned to him, "You are here early. Is everything alright?"
"I received your message that you were ready but the enforcer decided that meant I needed to be escorted immediately," Jayce frowned, "I apologize for imposing,"
"This is the public sentiment at the moment," she sighed, "I'll have a word with the about taking on extra when they don't need to. I doubt it will have much effect until people either forget who you are or there is something new for them to focus on," she handed the invite off to Elora, "I hope things weren't too awkward between you and Viktor after our dinner,"
She headed to the windows and he followed.
"Oh, it was fine," he couldn't help the smile that crept over his face as he looked out the window and remembered this morning, "Helped clear some things up actually,"
"That's the face of a man in love," she smirked at him. He met her eyes and it was just like those private moments they'd had before. He wanted to hold her and have those moments again. Not clouded with worry for Viktor. Maybe even with Viktor.
Her eyes searched his for a moment before he broke it.

Would she even be interested in me this time? Can't push that issue. Gods she's beautiful.

"Very much," he finally answered her.
"It's a good look on you," she looked back out the window, "There are many opportunities to improve lives here," she had that far away look she got when thinking of home, "The future I want ends the suffering for many and brings technological advancements for the betterment of society. What do you want the future to look like, Jayce?"
He thought for a moment. Flashes of a future that wouldn't happen crossed his mind. All those people turned into mechanical robots, Viktor floating at the commune, laying broken on the cold ground staring up at the sliver of starry sky.
A word without Hextech. One that can heal Viktor through treatments rather than magic.

"I want the future to be easier for people to live in. That isn't constantly fighting to live. Do you put your focus on the Undercity?"
“I must admit it hasn't been as much of a focus as it should," she frowned, "Do you think Viktor will be willing to advise me on a few projects regarding the Undercity?"
"I think so. You'll have to ask him," Jayce said quietly.

Viktor will tear your plans apart and demand you do better. As he probably should. Jayce admitted to himself.

They'd been foolishly optimistic about the projects they'd planned. The Undercity had real needs and should have influence over what happens there for themselves.
"Perhaps I'll have to broach the subject with him soon then," she said thoughtfully.
"Please do,"
There was a knock on the door and Elora answered allowing Viktor to enter. Jayce smiled and approached him.
"Hope things went well with Sky," Jayce commented as he was few feet away. Viktor gave him a warm smile and reached out a hand for him.
"It went well. She will of course want to know when we can celebrate," Viktor held his hand and kissed the back of it before gently letting go. Jayce flushed at the contact.

Why kiss the back of my hand? That was really sweet.

He lost his train of thought for a moment. Viktor was speaking with Mel and moving towards the chairs Elora had put out around the desk.
"Good to see Heimerdinger can take suggestions then," Mel said, "Please pass my congratulations on to Miss Young," she sat on her side of the table and Jayce took his seat next to Viktor.
"It appears I am late for this meeting," Viktor gave him a questioning look.
"An enforcer decided I was dangerous enough to escort me here," Jayce rolled his eyes.
"Is your mother ok?" Viktor asked.
"She's fine," he assured, "She was in the market when I left,"
"Hmmm," Viktor hummed concerned, "Make sure to check in. Enforcers aren't always... rational,"
"I will be speaking with them. It was inappropriate to give an escorts when it was a simple invite," Mel added.
"It's fine," he appreciated both of them being upset but there were bigger issues than if an enforcer took him on a walk, "Did you have any updates for us?"
Mel and Viktor shared a look and Jayce distinctly felt like he was being allowed to drop it but they certainly would not. He rolled his eyes.
"Yes, I believe we have a good draft with the changes previously discussed. I did have the building inspected for forge renovations. The forge can be added as long as it on an outside wall for venting and ease of access during construction," Mel said.
"May we review the contract?" Viktor asked. Elora brough each of them a little folder.
Inside Jayce found his full name in large print, his title 'Engeineer and Developer', Supervisor: Viktor as Project Manager.
The contract continued on the next page and he noted the changes in the conduct and restrictions of his curfew.

As long as good behavior is maintained no
escorts will be required when returning home. At first occurrence of offense the escorts will be required until further evaluation.

Not too bad of a deal.

He looked up from the contract to find Viktor tapping his finger on the table looking at Mel. He didn't look at Jayce.
"Is it to your liking Jayce?" she asked, breaking the staring contest she and Viktor were having.
"Yeah," he said slowly, "Is everything alright?" he asked both of them."I am trying to understand your motives, Mel," Viktor said, Jayce was familiar with that sharp edge to his tone. Viktor felt like she was pitying him.
"Motivations for what part? I have many," she had a perfect poker face.
"Why do you insist the building have a lift before I can move in? I do not need your pity," Viktor snapped, gripping the handle of his cane.
"It's a simple accommodation," she said easily, "If you'd rather walk up 3 flights of stairs every day you'll have that option,""Preventing me from moving in directly?" Viktor pressed his finger to the offending paragraph, "This is not an accommodation I even asked for!"
Mel raised an eyebrow before answering, "I have a contract with the lift manufacturers. Every building I have purchased in the last 2 years has had a lift installed if applicable. This is not about you directly, Viktor. But it does have you and other people in mind," she replied cooly, "If you are to invite people who are ill or injured in for potential treatments then you must be able to get them up and down efficiently and safely. I assume you won't be discriminating against hiring disabled staff,"Viktor sat back with a jolt, surprise across his face. The last 2 years? Mel, you've been busy.
"My apologies," Viktor said quietly, "I did not know you had this agreement,"
"It is understandable that you might see this as a personal slight for preventing you from moving in during construction," she gave him sly little grin, "You are of course welcome to sleep through the overnight shift of drilling, welding, and I'm sure dropping of equipment,"
"Eh, no," Viktor replied sheepishly, "How long will construction take?"
"A small project like that? 2-4 days for the construction another day for final inspections to be completed. Plenty of time to pack and choose furniture,""I can be packed quickly," he shrugged, "And I do not have furniture to bring,"
"Exactly why you'll need time to pick them out," she handed him a catalog, "You are welcome to pick anything from here. The cost is covered so choose freely," she smiled as Viktor thumbed through it and Jayce noted it not only had very nice furniture but also some lab equipment and desk chairs. It was to fully furnish the whole space not just his personal space.
"Thank you," he quickly closed the catalog, "I have no objections. Jayce?"
"Looks good. Are you sure I don't need to be escorted home?" Jayce asked.
"If an enforcer is stationed outside the lab it looks like we're covering something up rather than business as usual. If you break your code of conduct it will be the first thing to ensure your behavior. But it doesn't have to be an enforcer," Mel answered, "You're not a prisoner nor criminal,"
Jayce held her gaze for a long moment drinking her in. He shook himself slightly and started signing. Viktor followed suit and shortly there after were taking their own copies of the contract from Elora.
"Looks like all we have left is the tour!" Mel said cheerily as she looked to both of them.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

They arrived in Mel's luxury auto. It was a short distant to the medical lab. The driver opened Mel's door and helped her out. Jayce opened the other door and helped Viktor out. Their hands lingered together before Viktor leaned on his cane. Jayce gave him a smile that Viktor returned. "Welcome to your lab gentlemen," Mel looked up at the building. It was white stone with a dome on the top, the walls were solid with a few windows on each floor. The grounds were grassy in the front and looked like a park with trees and a winding path on either side and to presumably the back. Mel led them through the doors into the lobby. It had the air of a sterile office. No personality but a very efficient business. Jayce didn't like it. They'd have to inject life into it. He watched Viktor inspect the lobby. Viktor took his time looking over the space. He peered into side offices and wander down a hallway. Jayce followed admiring one of the labs. This is much more space than we had in our old lab. Mel followed giving information about the prior uses. Jayce liked the back corner for the forge. Furthest from the lobby and close to the rear delivery doors made it the best solution. "The lift system will be towards the lobby so it can be completed separately from the forge. It will take time to make sure the forge is setup to your specifications," Mel confirmed, "If you're up for it we can head upstairs,"Viktor nodded and let Mel lead. Jayce put a gentle hand on Viktor's back and gave him the 'are you sure you're OK with the stairs' look. Viktor only glared at him slightly before stopping. "I can carry you if you want," Jayce whispered, "Or you can climb my back," "I do not want to prove her right that the lift system is indeed a good plan. I just need a moment," "I'll be right behind you then," Jayce watched Viktor as he leaned against the wall. "I am just tired. Not fragile, Jayce," Viktor said without opening his eyes. Jayce gave a small chuckle. "You're the strongest person I know," Jayce said as he leaned against the other wall, "You're pushing yourself and I don't want you to be exhausted by the time we get to your new place,""I do want to see it," Viktor looked at him accusingly, "This is unfair. I cannot hide from you," "Years of working side by side. Late night's pushing ourselves to exhaustion. Drunk nights where you complained about your knee and back braces and made me promise to make them more comfortable..." Jayce smiled fondly at the memories. Viktor was the reason for everything. Jayce met Viktor's eyes and could have lived on that moment. "Everything alright?" Mel asked from the top of the stairs. "Yeah," Jayce answered, "Be up in a minute!" Jace gave a playful smile to Viktor, "Please?" Viktor rolled his eyes but smiled back, "Fine but I will complain the whole time," That was all Jayce needed. He scooped Viktor up holding his back in one arm and legs on the other. Viktor wrapped his arm around Jayce's neck and held tightly to his cane. "Jayce Talis! How dare you! Carrying me was completely unnecessary," Viktor complained loudly with a grin, "You think me weak I cannot take the stairs? This is undignified, " "Viktor?" Mel asked, barely hiding her amusement when Jayce reached the top of the stairs, "Everything alright?" "Put me down you brute," Viktor demanded. Jayce just grinned and gently set Viktor down waiting until he was steady to let go. "There," Jayce said, "That wasn't so bad," "You saved me 5 minutes of walking. Congratulations," Viktor replied sarcastically as he straighten his clothes, "Second floor has...?" Mel continued the tour of the second floor which was mostly administrative offices in the first half and then smaller labs for testing equipment. The majority of them were still equipped with sample testing machines and a large scanner of sorts that Jayce had no idea what it was used for. He was excited to start using these spaces and learning everything he could. There was a café space on this floor and he was happy to know the former staff wanted to return. Letters had been sent to most of the staff for the entire building but not many had replied yet. They sat at the back side of the building with some large windows that over looked the garden space in the back. Jayce wanted to take a walk around the meandering path that wove between bushes, trees, and garden boxes. "This will be a good place for rehabilitation for those that need to build their endurance using prosthetics or after treatments," Viktor commented. "I know a few experts that help with body conditioning," Mel commented, "I'll reach out to them and see what all they suggest or if they are willing to work with us," "How many people regularly worked in this space before?"Jayce asked. "Approximately 25 full time staff and 10 different teams rotating through for different projects," Mel answered. "How many do you think we'll need?" Jayce asked, "Depending on the first projects of course," "Let's see how many we can hire," Mel gave him a pat on the hand, "We will figure that out soon," Jayce looked at their hands and smiled, "I'm excited to make improvements in the world," "Then let's finish this tour and get to work," They got to the foot of the stairs and Jayce gave a smirk to Viktor a moment before scooping him up and quickly heading up the stairs. Mel chuckled behind as Viktor 'protested'. The third floor looked very similar to the others in one main exception was the glass dome. The glass rose over them as they walked. There was a garden area inside with benches and seating tucked between plants creating little nooks of privacy. Wow! This is beautiful. An impressive garden and serene. The number of plants that he couldn't recognize was surprising. "These are not common plants," Viktor commented as he held the leaves of a tall flower gently between his fingers. "The former scientist's wife was a botonist who collected rare plants. He decided to retire and left her collection when she passed," Mel said as she leaned in to smell the flower he was holding, "She was known for her peculiar choices but these plants are valuable in sentiment and rarity. Some are also difficult to keep alive after transplanting. We are lucky to see these," Jayce marveled at the plants and wandered further in. At the center of the dome and the garden there was a little fountain. The basin was a light blue with wave patterns swirling, the main part was several mermaids back to back with their hands up holding the top fountain platform. Water cascaded around them falling into the basin which had colorful tiles depicting fish in the mosaic patterns. He found a spot to sit and took in the space. It was quiet and serene. He could see himself sitting here with a coffee working on a particularly challenging project. Mel found him and took the spot next to him. "It's lovely isn't it?""Yeah, I'm glad you were able to get this place," Jayce said giving her a glance as he said it. She was gorgeous with the greenery framed around her. This private moment reminded him of watching her paint. "You have that far away look again, Jayce," she spoke softly, "What are you thinking of?" "Oh," he flushed slightly, "Just that this would be a really nice place to paint," "You paint?" she asked curious. "No, but someone I knew did," You do. You spend so much time and focus making it just right. "I too enjoy painting. It is a skill one has to develop. Helps quiet my mind," she was also looking at the fountain. They sat in the quiet for a moment longer before standing, "Let's find Viktor and show him his new home," They found him sitting on a comfortable looking chair also enjoying the quiet. Jayce smiled seeing him so relaxed. "Ah, good," Viktor said as he saw them, "Are we ready to continue?" "Yes, this way," Mel guided them out of the garden and over to one if the sides, "This is where all the supplies for the garden are kept. We have the groundskeeper who helped establish the rare plants on retainer to maintain the plants. He will be training an apprentice to help maintain it," She let them look around briefly at the shelves holding gardening material and a rack of tools. They headed across the building to the other side where the living quarters were. Mel opened the door and let Viktor go in first. They'd seen the floor plans for the space so it wasn't a big surprise as to what it looked like but it was still different to see it in person. Viktor had a wide eyed awe as he looked around. The space was empty so Viktor's cane click echoed around the room. There was a little space at the doorway for shoes and coats and then the main room had a wide open space with a balcony, fireplace and off to the side another hallway. Viktor stood in the middle of the main room and turned to look at Mel. "This is all mine?" he whispered. "Yes," she approached him, "You can do whatever you want with the space. Furnish it how you want and invite whomever you want," she took his free hand, "Take your time," Viktor and Mel stood there having some sort of exchange that Jayce didn't follow. Viktor squeezed her hand and gave her a smile before moving to the balcony. Mel watched him go but didn't follow. Jayce went to follow him but Mel held her hand up for him to wait. He stayed but gave her a curious look. She moved them down the hallway into one of the rooms. There was a bar in the corner with a few stools. "What just happened?" Jayce asked. "He's overwhelmed," she moved to the bar and took a seat at the bar, "It's more than I think he expected,""He pulled himself up from Zaun. It wasn't easy and he only ever had himself to rely on," Jayce also leaned on the bar remembering Viktor's words. "Nobody has ever believed in me. Poor, cripple, from the Undercity. I was an outsider the moment I stepped foot in Piltover. I didn't have the benefits of a patron or a name. I simply believed in myself. Which is why I'm here. Because I think you're on to something. I want to help you complete your research,"Now he has two of us that believe in him. Putting him in charge of the project and research. This whole thing has been a lot in a very short period of time. Jayce sighed. So much has changed but these are the same people I've known. "What do you think of the place?" "The whole place is amazing," he looked over the room, "It's a blank slate," Something to build fresh. Not reminding me of Hextech. Something we build together. "Elora will coordinate with both of you for things that need to be changed, added or remodeled before work can being. Then we can work on prioritizing projects we want to start focusing on," "Sounds great," Jayce admired her for a moment, "Maybe we get a few paintings commissioned from the Council woman herself,""Oh," she dipped her head briefly with a gracious smile, "You'd want one?" "Of course. You do good work," "How would you know?" Mel asked. Shit not many people have even seen her paintings. "Because you put so much effort into everything you do. Why would this be any different?" he tried to save the slip up. She looked at him curiously. "Thank you. I'll consider making a contribution," she shook her head. They discussed a few other plans for the building when Viktor entered. "I see you found the entertaining space," Viktor said as he walked around the back of the bar. "Yes, it seems like a comfortable space already," Mel commented. "I don't know..."Jayce looked over the room before smirking at Viktor, "Could use some furniture," Viktor rolled his eyes at Jayce before ducking down to examine the shelves. "Could also use some alcohol," Viktor said, "That should be my housewarming gift," "Noted," Mel chuckled, "Well this concludes the tour. Are you happy with the space?" "It is adequate," he replied with a teasing smirk, "There are some changes of course but overall this is more than I could have asked for," "I'm glad the opportunity arose," Mel smiled back, "We can leave whenever you'd like. Tomorrow Elora will coordinate with you both on all the changes you want. I do have meetings and things to do the rest of the week so I won't be as available as I have been. But if you need anything let Elora know tomorrow," "Thanks Mel," Jayce gave her a warm smile. He turned to Viktor who was now leaning against the counter across from them, "You ready?" “Yes, you should probably be dropped back home," Viktor said. "Oh! That reminds me! Mom invited you for dinner," Jayce said happily, "She wants to meet you and celebrate our new project," "Ah, that is sweet of her," Viktor said awkwardly, "Let's plan for a few days from now," "Of course," Maybe meeting her is too soon. I don't care, "We also have to congratulate Sky," "She will want to see this space. She already said she wants to make sure 'it feels like home and not an empty box'. So tomorrow she and I will be here," "I'll send Elora over in the afternoon then," Mel followed him and Jayce hopped off the stool and trailed after them. Things are about to be very different.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The next few days went by quickly. They got to work on the changes to the building, half the previous staff agreed to return and the renovations for the forge were starting. The lift system was ready and made moving in so much easier.

Jayce and Viktor were in the lobby signing off on the delivery of furniture for Viktor's apartment.

"Mom wanted me to ask when you would like to come over," Jayce said as the movers started carrying stuff through.

"Tomorrow?" Viktor asked. He sat at the lobby desk and propped his leg up on a box, "Tonight I will be tired from directing and opening things,"

"I can help," Jayce sat on the desk, "I don't have anything going on,"

"I would appreciate that. My things also arrived today," Viktor leaned back an looked up at Jayce, "What should I bring your mother?"

"You don't have to-" Jayce started.

"Yes, I do," Viktor interrupted holding up a hand, "I am to meet my partner's parent. It requires a gift,"

"Ok... She likes flowers?"

"Do you know what kind," Viktor said annoyed.

"I... don't know?" Jayce thought about it for a moment, "She likes pink ones?"

Viktor sighed and patted Jayce's leg. He thinks I'm an idiot. What am I supposed to know about flowers?

"Sirs," one of the movers interrupted them,"We are just about done with the delivery. The last load's gone up. We'll be done in a moment,"

"Thank you," Viktor answered, "Things were set in their respective rooms?"

"As they were marked, sir" the man said respectfully. Viktor nodded and the man headed back outside and started closing up the delivery trucks and sending his team off as they filtered back out.

Jayce locked the doors and they headed up to the apartment. There were lots of boxes stacked in each room. Jayce took his jacket off and hung it by the door before rolling up his sleeves.

"Where do you want to start?"

Jayce helped Viktor setup his kitchen and the small dining space. He only had a modest amount of dishware and a few pots and pans.

"I don't cook often," Viktor commented as they were placing things away, "Living at the academy meant usually eating from the cafeteria, if I remembered,"

"Cooking was something I had to learn. We didn't always have much so I learned to be creative. I can teach you some recipes if you'd like,"

"Or you could just cook them for me," Viktor shrugged, "I imagine you will have more use of this kitchen than I will,"

Jayce couldn't help the sappy smile. I'd love to cook for you everyday for rest of our lives.

"I'll be bring spices then," Jayce teased.

"As long as you provide sweetmilk I don't care," Viktor gave him a playful smirk.

They moved on to the rest of the space. The living room took some time to place things. Viktor asked him to rearrange the room a few times before he settled on an arrangement that worked. Jayce had moved enough furniture and emptied boxes that he had worked up a sweat. He pulled his shirt off.

"You like this arrangement?" he asked one more time.

"... Yes," Viktor said slowly. Jayce put his hands on his hips and admired the layout.

"Next room?" he looked to Viktor expectantly. Viktor was staring at his chest and met Jayce's eyes, eventually.

"Yes, let's continue," Viktor waved him towards the next room with a stack of boxes.

Jayce unfurled the rug, placed the work desk, unboxed a new chair and set Viktor's papers out for him. Viktor had been working on putting books on shelves as Jayce unpacked.

He hasn't made very much progress. Jayce thought as he looked at the books remaining.

"You want help with those?" Jayce leaned against the wall as he asked. Viktor took a long moment to look up at him. A familiar look in those eyes held Jayce in place.

What an idiot I was. How many times had Viktor looked at me like this in the lab? With desire in his eyes. Like he wanted to take him right here. Jayce felt a thrill of arousal flush through him.

"No, I will do this later," Viktor said evenly not betraying any of that desire he held as he stood, "One more and we are done for the night,"

Jayce followed Viktor into the bedroom several boxes were stacked by the door and a large bed and rug had been laid out. A matching set of nightstands and a dresser were placed in the room.

"The bed will be on this wall," Viktor directed, "Dresser on this wall and the sofa here," Jayce set out to move the furniture as directed. They found the bedding and made the bed together.

"Jayce," Viktor said as he sat on the bed, leg stretched out, stuffing a pillow in it's case, "In the other timeline..." Jayce looked to him, "Did I have anyone?"

“Like family? No,"

"Like a partner. Romantic partner?" Viktor clarified.

"No, you were always in the lab," Jayce admitted, "You did tell me once that I was the only friend you really made in Piltover,"

"Ah," he frowned, "Thank you. It is nice to know many things were the same there as they are here,"

"What does that mean?" Jayce stopped stuffing the pillow he had been working on to look at Viktor.

"That I was equally determined to find a cure and help people. If I had spent time with anyone I think it would have been you, yes?"

"All time! We practically lived in the lab. I did have to go to events and only managed to get you to come to a few. The big ones we had to attend,"

"I still do not believe that part," Viktor scoffed and threw the pillow.

"There weren't many and most people were talking to me really," Jayce finished his pillow and set it aside, "Did you think there'd be a big difference?"

"Just making sure I wasn't diverging from the man you knew," Viktor said with a hint of sadness.

"Viktor," Jayce crawled across the bed to him, "Even if you were different I'd still want to know you. Learn who you were. Love you all the same," Jayce looked into Viktor's eyes and tried to show how earnestly he felt this, "It's always you,"

Viktor searched his eyes for a long moment. He gave a soft smile to Jayce before caressing his face. Jayce leaned into the touch. He closed his eyes and felt Viktor's hands wander down his throat and chest.

"You always have such passion when you speak of me. No one has spoken of me like this," Viktor let his hand wander further down.

"Nothing you could do would change the way I feel about you," Jayce said eyes still closed.

"Even taking away people's independence and choice..." Viktor pulled his hand away, "Perhaps you should have limits of what you'll accept from me,"

Jayce opened his eyes and gave a sad smile to Viktor.

"Might not agree with you on everything. I spent a long time thinking about what I should have done," Jayce said softly, "When Mage you sent me back... I was ready to kill you. Stop you no matter the cost,"

Viktor looked down at his hands now resting in his lap, "No matter the cost," he repeated back, "You would not have stayed after stopping me?"

Jayce shook his head and looked away, "There is no me without you,"

Viktor leaned into him and Jayce wrapped his arms around Viktor, holding him.

"I have thought about this and I think I have a conclusion," Viktor said quietly. Jayce waited, curious as to where Viktor was going with this, "You Jayce Talis are an idiot," Jayce chuckled at that, "No laughing matter. You should see a professional about this," Viktor teased looking up at him. Jayce cupped his face and kissed him gently.

"I'll get on that diagnosis then," Jayce could see Viktor was very tired. Dark circles were forming under his eyes and he was unconsciously rubbing his leg muscles, "I should let you get some rest," Jayce pulled away slightly.

"You... could stay," Viktor said quietly. Jayce melted at that hesitant glance.

"Only if you really want me to. It's your first night in your new place... You can have it to yourself for a night," I don't want to encroach. We've spent all day together and he probably wants some alone time.

"It's a new space," Viktor said looking at the room that could have held his entire studio apartment in just the bedroom alone, "And still too big," he wrapped an arm around Jayce's middle pressing them close, "Please stay,"

Jayce knew this was a big deal. A bigger deal than staying at the studio. Not an invite to live here but a desire to have him close when facing something new and strange.

"Of course I'll stay. Do you want a massage again?" he felt Viktor nod and gave a little chuckle, "Ok when you're ready,"

Viktor slowly pulled away and reluctantly moved his leg off the bed. His movements were stiff. Jayce moved so he was behind Viktor, bracketing his knees on either side and ran his hands up Viktor's arms.

"Just relax and let me make you feel good," Jayce whispered into Viktor's ear. He felt Viktor shiver and started slowly working tense muscles.

He helped Viktor out of his clothes. Jayce admired Viktor for a moment before continuing. He had Viktor lay down on his stomach first and worked his way down Viktor's back, feeling muscles relax under his fingers.

"I paid for a massage once," Viktor said, words muffled and slurring slightly, "They were too rough and I ended up with many bruises,"

"Am I hurting you?" Jayce asked slowing down.

"Not at all. Keep doing what you are doing," Viktor sighed, "I appreciate this,"

Jayce smiled to himself as he worked. This is nice. I just want him to feel good and have a decent night sleep.

"Any time,"

"Do you really mean that?"

"Yeah," he helped Viktor turn over, "Middle of the day if you need a break or just your shoulders hurt," Jayce leaned over him and gave him a chaste kiss, "I'd love to get my hands on you," he gave a little smirk before pulling away. Viktor rolled his eyes and huffed.

"You may regret the things you say to me like that. I may take you up on them and then you'll have to figure out how to focus when you're back in the lab,"

"A challenge I will just have to overcome," Jayce kept working Viktor's legs, taking care to avoid pressure points.

"You are... different from what I thought you'd be like," Viktor commented as he watched Jayce. Jayce raised his eyebrows curious, "When I first saw your apartment I thought you would have arrogance that blinded you from the recklessness of your experiments. A wealthy patron usually means spoiled and ego," Viktor closed his eyes sleepily, "But instead you were really on to something. You had confidence in that. Sure you signed all your notes...ehhh a bit egotistical don't you think?" Viktor cracked an eye open to smirk at him. Jayce just grinned.

Same thing he said to me that night the first time. This really could have been the different path we could have taken.

"What is so amusing?" Viktor asked.

"Just... you said the same thing to me before," Jayce was working on Viktor's feet, "Asked you if you had a list with my name on it when you stopped me," he chuckled before continuing, "You then went on to mock me about it the same way," Viktor watched him as he finished massaging his feet.

"Do you miss him?" Viktor asked quietly as Jayce covered him with the blanket.

"Miss who?"

"The other me. The one you built Hextech with,"

"No," Jayce said simply, "Because he's right here. Here living a better life. One where we can be together and not spending long lonely nights in the lab,"

"There will be long nights in the lab," Viktor frowned.

"But they won't be lonely," Jayce said determined. He leaned over Viktor so their faces were very close, "You're not alone in this,"

Viktor leaned up and kissed him. Jayce leaned into it and relished the moment. They parted and Viktor gave him a soft smile.

"Thank you," Viktor ran a hand over Jayce's neck, "Now get in here so we can sleep,"

Jayce gave him another quick kiss and hurried to turn the lights out. Snuggled together they fell asleep.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

A soft chiming sound woke him. He was laying on his back and Viktor's arm and leg were thrown over him. Viktor groaned at the sound. "What is that sound?" Viktor asked groggily, "And make it stop," Jayce chuckled before moving Viktor off him gently. He kissed Viktor's hair before getting out of bed. He'd slept in his pants and was shuffling down the hallway when the chiming happened again. The doorbell. Who would even be here? He opened the door and met a man in his late 70s with a white beard in dark green overalls. "Hello?" Jayce greeted. "Hello! Sorry to disturb you sir. I am Henry Trassito, the groundskeeper. Heard yesterday was moving day for the new project manager. Nice to meet you," Henry stuck his hand out for a handshake. Jayce took it and was a little self conscious to be meeting an employee shirtless and hair unkempt. "Ah, that'd be Viktor. I'm Jayce Talis, nice to meet you Mr. Trassito," "Henry is just fine, sir," Henry had a firm handshake and a warm smile, "Glad to meet you. Is the project manager... Viktor, here too? I'd love to say hello," "We had a late night. He's still sleeping," Jayce said, "I'm sure he'd be happy to meet you in a couple hours. Are you working on the garden?" "Ah, I see," Henry gave him knowing nod and wink Jayce tried to not blush, "Yup! Got some plants ready for their check up. These are some special plants. I'll have to give you the tour sometime so you can get to know them,""I'd appreciate that," Jayce said genuinely, "I heard you're training an apprentice,""Two actually!" Henry chuckled, "They're sharp kids. I will begin training them next week and will bring them by so you two can meet them. I'll let you get back to your day," "Thank you for stopping by, Henry. We'll see you later," Jayce waved and shut and locked the door. Well one employee has seen me shirtless. This is going great. He thought sarcastically. Way to keep professionalism. He headed back to the bedroom and found Viktor sleeping in an awkward angle that surely wasn't comfortable. Jayce scooped Viktor slightly so he was laying on his side and slid back into bed throwing the covers over both of them. "What was that sound?" Viktor asked snuggling into the embrace. "The doorbell," "Oh? I did not know I had one. How novel," he said a little more awake, "Who even has access to the building right now?" "The groundskeeper. He stopped by and said hello. He was hoping to give us a tour of the plants later," "Ah, that makes sense," Viktor yawned, "Did you answer shirtless?" Jayce chuckled before humming his yes. "Great first impression," Viktor teased, "Maybe we find you a shirt to wear before you answer the door," "I don't remember where it is. Honestly, wasn't thinking about it until he introduced himself," Viktor stretched and turned onto his back. His head and neck cradled on Jayce's arm. Jayce's other hand rested on Viktor's chest. "Thank you... for staying," Viktor said. "Of course," Jayce gently rubbed Viktor's chest, "How did you sleep?" "Surprisingly well. Your massages help with the muscle spasms," "Glad to be of service," Jayce leaned forward and kissed Viktor's shoulder. Viktor smiled at the touch and placed his hand over Jayce's, picked it up and shifted it lower. Jayce felt his arousal spike as his hand wrapped around Viktor's building erection. A small gasp from Viktor made him bolder with his touch. He stroked firmly but slowly. His thumb rubbing the underside of the head of Viktor's cock as he moved. "Jayce," Viktor breathed his name. Jayce shifted so he was able to kiss Viktor, who quickly pulled him in for a needy kiss. They were a flurry of hands grabbing, pulling off Jayce's pants, lips crashing and panting to catch their breath between moans. Jayce held both their cocks in one hand and stroked. Viktor rocked into the touch as he sucked and bit at Jayce's chest. They were close to that edge of ecstasy and Viktor grabbed Jayce by the throat, surprising him but also causing an involuntary moan. "I'm close," Viktor whispered, "Keep stroking," the command and hand on his throat restricting his breathing brought him so close to his release. Viktor kissed him and stiffened as he shook through his own orgasm. Jayce kept stroking just a bit longer and the slickness from Viktor's release made his hand slippery, sending him over that edge. His mind went blank with pleasure as he spilled between them. Viktor's hand relaxed and he was able to breathe again. He looked at Viktor who was watching him. They smiled and Jayce sighed contentedly. They laid together just looking at each other for a long moment. He's so gorgeous. Could have had this for years... and now I do. He wanted me to stay the night.
"You're grinning at me," Viktor commented amused. "Just happy," Jayce replied. Viktor shook his head with a smile. "Get me a towel to clean up," Jayce looked down and saw Viktor's stomach covered in their mess. He liked seeing the mess. He kissed Viktor again and got up. He quickly grabbed a hand towel and went back to Viktor, gently wiping up everything. Viktor dressed while Jayce looked for his shirt. It had been tossed over the back of the sofa. Now back in shirt and pants he headed to the kitchen and double checked the fridge. By the time Viktor met him in the kitchen Jayce had made a nice breakfast with a glass of sweetmilk ready for Viktor. Viktor took his seat and looked over the food curiously. It was simple a few eggs over chopped skillet potatoes. "Thank you," Viktor said as he picked up his fork and took a hesitant bite. He met Jayce's eyes and nodded his approval. We'll have to get some groceries soon. There wasn't much in the fridge. Though the sooner we can have the café open we're both more likely to eat there. "Today there are more deliveries and a few staff arriving," Viktor said between bites. "And we have a garden tour," Jayce reminded him, "I should probably stop by my house and change my clothes and let mom know you're coming over. She's going to be a lot, just a warning," Viktor looked at him for a long moment. Jayce kept eating but wondered what Viktor was thinking. Maybe he has changed his mind. That's ok. It's pretty early to be meeting her in his perspective. "I have never been brought home to a parent before," "She'll have a lot of questions about you but will likely just be happy. The last time I brought anyone home..." he closed his eyes and shook his head, "I was a kid and it was kinda embarrassing," "I must know what I'm getting myself into," Viktor pointed at him with a fork full, "What could be embarrassing for a young Jayce?" "Ugh! The girl I brought over was very shy and Mom asked her a bunch of questions about herself but she clammed up. She broke up with me the next day," "Ah, overbearing?" Viktor grimaced. "Kinda? She just genuinely wants to know about people. She's already asked me about you," "I see," he had a small smile as he ate slowly. "So when we're ready we should do the garden tour then I'll head out. I'll be back in a couple hours then help with setup here," Viktor nodded and finished his drink. Jayce cleaned up as Viktor got his agenda from his bag. He remembered the day that bag broke. It started with the strap which wore out and Jayce spent the next 6 months patching it and the seams. Eventually the fabric wore out of the bottom and Viktor in his frustration tossed it rather than continue repairing it. Jayce made him another one that fit nicer to his body and held his agenda and notebooks perfectly. Viktor had tried to refuse the bag but wouldn't put it down. He shook his head as he tried to be present. Viktor was looking at him as he stared at the bag. "What is the matter?" “Nothing," Jayce said a little too quickly, "Just a memory. You had that bag for a long time," "It's the one Heimerdinger gave me when I first became his assistant," Viktor held the bag fondly, "Good to know it lasts," "Yeah," Jayce smiled, "Let me know when it starts to wear. I got used to fixing it," Viktor nodded. "I have a few things to do while you are gone," he sat at the table with his agenda and scribbled out his thoughts. They headed to the garden and easily found Henry. He noticed them approaching and gave a friendly wave. "Henry!" Jayce greeted with his hand out, "Good to see you again. Sorry about this morning," Henry shook his hand and gave them both a welcoming smile. "Don't worry! Glad you feel comfortable in your new place," “Henry, this is Viktor, the new project manager. Viktor, this is Henry Trassito, the groundskeeper," Jayce introduced them. Viktor took Henry's hand. "Nice to meet you. I hear you have been caretaking these exotic plants for many years," Viktor started the conversation. Henry gave them a tour of the plants naming many of them fondly and telling them about their rare properties. Jayce wasn't really following all their names and details. He was watching Viktor take in the new information. He was fascinated with the diversity of species and Jayce could see his mind trying to catalog the information. "Thank you for the tour. We will have to discuss you writing this information down," "Mrs. Veronica used to keep a sketchbook of her plants and details. That might be something we can ask for," Henry had a sad smile when he spoke of the woman who made this garden. "I will see what I can do," Viktor gave a curt nod, "Have a good rest of your day, Henry," "Thank you sirs. Same to you," Henry waved them a friendly goodbye and went back to his work. "There are many curious plants here. I wonder if some will be helpful for the medical treatments we are planning," Viktor had that light in his eyes that only came from new theories and testing to do. Jayce followed him to the lift and listened to his plant ramblings.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Jayce nervously opened the door to his mother's home. Delicious smells greeted him. He could hear her moving around the kitchen.
"Mom! We're here!" he called out as he held the door to let Viktor in.
"Mijo! You're early!" she called back to him, "Be there in just a moment!"
Jayce took the bouquet out of Viktor's hand so he could take his coat off. They had both dressed up for the evening. Viktor wearing the same black shirt he wore for their dinner with Mel.
"Oh! You both look so handsome!" she bustled down the hallway towards them.
"Mom, this is Viktor. Viktor, this is my mom, Ximena," Jayce introduced.
"Lovely to meet you, Viktor," she dove in for a hug before he could say anything.
"Likewise," he replied a little awkwardly, "I brought you flowers and a gift," he said with a polite smile as she pulled away.
"Oh, thank you!" she gushed over the flowers for a moment before turning to Jayce, "You never get me flowers. Why don't you get me flowers?" without giving him a chance to answer she turned to Viktor and beamed, "Glad to know someone here knows flowers are always welcome," she took the bottle of wine and lead them towards the dining room.
Viktor looked to Jayce with a bemused glance. Jayce mouthed 'I warned you' with a shrug and followed down the hall.
She had set up the table so both of them were sitting closer together and she was across from them.
"Please sit! I will bring out the food,"
When she was out of the room Viktor relaxed.
"That wasn't too bad," Viktor commented.
"She's barely got started," Jayce smiled, "Thank you for coming by,"
Viktor looked to him with curiosity, "Do you think I wouldn't?"
Jayce frowned, "This never happened... We were so busy with research. I barely spoke with her,"Viktor placed his hand on Jayce's knee and gave a small sad smile. Jayce put his hand on top and rubbed the back of Viktor's hand.
They had a very nice dinner with a mini interrogation of Viktor that he handled well. Jayce felt warm and happy as his mom fussed over Viktor being so skinny and promised to pack leftovers for them to take back.
"You'll have to come over again sometime soon. You're such a polite young man, Viktor," she said as Jayce helped her clean up the table.
"Of course, Ximena. When work allows of course," Viktor went to stack a plate and she waved him off.
"Let me get this. You're a guest," she looked to a Jayce with a raised eyebrow.
"I got this, Mom," he chuckled as she gave him a satisfied smile. He went to the kitchen and waited for a moment to listen to what they were talking about.
"It's nice to know Jayce has someone kind he spends his time with,"
"You raised a good man," Viktor said fondly.
"He best treat you right. If he doesn't you let me know and I will handle it,"
Jayce rolled his eyes at this with a smile. As if I'd make that mistake again.
He cleaned up the dishes and put the leftovers in containers before heading back out to the table.
"All done," he put a hand on Viktor's shoulder as he took his seat again. She watched the two of them with a knowing look, "She didn't talk your ear off did she?"
"We were conspiring on how best to make sure you behave," Viktor tried to hold back a smile, "I heard something about shoes. I think my cane is a good substitute,"
"You wouldn't dare," Jayce feigned outrage, causing them all the laugh, "I'll behave I swear,"
"Speaking of," she said, "It's getting late and you should take Viktor home,"
"Thank you for your hospitality. We will make sure to do this again," Viktor said and stood.Viktor went to the bathroom leaving him alone with his mom for a moment.
"He's a good man. Treat him right. I know how much you love him," she cupped Jayce's cheek smiling at him, "He loves you too. Don't forget that. You have to bring him over again!"“Of course, Mom," he gave her a big smile before picking her up in a hug, "I love you too,"
They headed out with the leftovers in a bag and several hugs and cheek kisses from Ximena later. It was a fairly long walk back to the lab. Jayce felt like he was riding a high.
"She likes you," Jayce told Viktor.
"Of course she does," Viktor smirked at him, "If you are not careful she might just replace you,"
"I don't know... I think she has already adopted you," he shook the bag at Viktor, "She's feeding you,"
"That doesn't mean I'm adopted,"
"She feeds family," Jayce shrugged. You have no idea, V. She's going to love mothering you.
"Well, I enjoyed myself. She is kind and friendly," Viktor looked happy and relaxed, "You have a good mother, Jayce,"
"Thanks," he couldn't help but think about the fact that she tried so hard to make a life for them and he almost ruined it.
"You are getting lost in thought again," Viktor commented, "So you want to share?"
"Not really," Jayce gave an apologetic smile, "It's just guilt,""You're making things better," Viktor stopped for a moment, "Does... something happen to her?"
"What? Oh, no," Jayce had carried forward a few steps past him, "She was living her life as far as I knew. We'd write occasionally,""That is good," Viktor said slowly, "The you have time with her,"
Jayce tuned back to Viktor and felt the sadness of losing Viktor wash over him. Tears welled up and he couldn't help but close the distance between them and hold Viktor in his arms.
Viktor held him, rubbing a soothing hand on his back. Jayce breathed in his scent and found comfort in it.

He's alive and here. We're working on a cure. He'll be ok. I'll be ok. I won't lose him again.

"Sorry," Jayce whispered as he pulled away, wiping away the few tears he'd shed. Viktor gave him a reassuring smile.
"Come on. Let's go back to the lab,"

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Viktor was nervous that much was obvious to Jayce. He gripped his cane too tightly and kept staring at his notes with a blank look.
Jayce put an arm around Viktor's shoulders, causing him to jump slightly.
"Everything ok?" Jayce asked.
"Yes, I'm fine," Viktor snapped. Jayce raise his eyebrows and didn't move his arm.
"You want to run through it again?"
"No," Viktor pinched the bridge of his nose, "I do not like speaking in front of so many people. I just need a moment,"
“Ok, I'll be right outside if you need me," Jayce stopped before opening the door, "Even in the other timeline you didn't like public speaking. But when you care about what is at stake your words have power. You will do great, V,"
He left and leaned against the wall. In the room down the hall he watched a few people filter in as the employees gathered in the conference room. The first day with staff was finally happening. They had their plans, already met the leadership for the different departments and prepared them for their first day. It wasn't a very big group, only about 15 people.

The gala stage was set. He was next. The lights were bright and warm. As his name was called he plastered his practiced smile on his face and took to the stage. It was difficult to see but as his eyes adjusted, he was overwhelmed by the rows of tables laid out before him, filled with Piltover's wealthy and famous.

"Good evening everyone," he cleared his throat and fought the urge to rub the back of his neck. Instead he looked to his papers and set them down on the podium. He'd practiced this speech so many times he knew it by heart but, his tongue felt sticky and made of lead. He stuttered through the first few words and looked to the crowd. Some people were whispering to themselves and a few snickered. His eyes locked in on Heimerdinger who gave him a reassuring smile and nod.

Jayce took a long deep breath and started over. It'd been so long he didn't remember what the speech was. He was pretty sure he blacked out for it. All he remembered was giving the speech to Heimerdinger and the applause. He quickly waved and left the stage. Viktor was backstage waiting with a big grin.

"You did it!"

“That was terrifying," Jayce wiped the sweat off his brow, suddenly aware of how hot those lights and his nerves made him.

"They seemed to like it," Viktor peered out between the curtains.

"I hope I don't have to do that again,"
"Oh you will. I am not doing that," Viktor said adamantly.
Jayce chuckled at the memory. Viktor opened the door slowly and stepped out looking confident and unbothered. Their eyes met and Viktor just gave a curt nod before heading down the hallway. Jayce followed.
As they'd planned, Jayce went in first. Many of them had taken seats but a few were still chatting.
"Can I have everyone's attention!" Jayce raised his voice slightly over the chatter. Everyone quieted and looked to him, "Please take your seats. We'll get things started in just a moment," he waited for everyone to take their seats, "I'm Jayce Talis, Engineer and Developer for Piltover Medical Research Facility. Thank you for being here. You all pretty much know each other but today is the first day we're all gathered under our new mission and project leadership. I'd like to introduce our Project Manager, Viktor," he looked to the door and Viktor pushed the door open.
Viktor walked in confidently and gave Jayce a nod before taking the center of the room. Jayce stood off to the side and listened.
"Thank you for joining our project," Viktor started in a slow and measured pace, "This facility is a resource you are more familiar with than I am. Your skills and knowledge will help guide our endeavors to push known science further. The Piltover Medical Research Facility is going to change the world. We will find cures, help the injured and disabled," he leaned on his cane in front of him getting more passionate as he spoke, "Improving lives is our goal. Scientists seek discoveries, ways to make the world a better place. We will do that," he took a dramatic pause like they'd practiced, "Today you start work on several projects that we have outlined. Your leads will have details of what your teams will be working on. Our efforts here will be that of innovation and progress. Remember, that together we're improving the lives of real people and our best efforts must be made to make this effective and safe. Together we will see a bright future," he ended his speech with thunk of his cane. The staff clapped and smiled as they looked to each other. Viktor gestured to the leads as the clapping subsided, "Your leads will guide you through the next steps of the project. I look forward to working with you all," Viktor stepped over to Jayce and leaned against the table set off to the side.
"That was great Viktor!" Jayce said quietly as he leaned against the table too.
"It felt like it was too much," Viktor said, "But they seemed to like it,"
"I think they believe you," Jayce smiled to a few people who caught their eyes with curiosity, "They are going to want to speak with you,"
"I know," Viktor sighed, "I want to get started not socilaize,"
"This is part of getting people excited to work," Jayce said right before a woman approached them. She had a nice practical long dress on and her hair pulled back in a bun, "Hello! Nice to meet you," Jayce greeted standing up.
"Nice to meet you Viktor and Mr. Talis," she gave them both smiled and shook their hands, "I'm Amelia and have been in medical development for the last 5 years with a focus on fungal research. I'm impressed with the speed of this project. It usually takes years of fundraising to get this kind of establishment going,""It is nice to meet you, Amelia," Viktor replied, "We have the patronage of Councilor Medarda to thank for that,"
"She is something isn't she?" Amelia said with a sense of awe, "I look forward to working with both of you. Please let me know if you need anything,"
"We look forward to working together. Thank you," Jayce replied. They had similar conversations with other staff members. Jayce liked meeting all these people. They were passionate, intelligent and best of all dedicated.
Having a group of people who had already worked together and in the building made the first day much smoother than they'd expected. They let everyone get settled and by lunchtime they were happy to see no one had major complaints.
Jayce and Viktor went to lunch at the Cafe and found it fairly busy. They greeted people going about their day. They sat at the window table and were enjoying the view as they ate.
"This afternoon I have a meeting with the leads," Viktor said as he munched on his food.
"Do you want me to be a part of that?" Jayce asked.
"Yes, I'd like that,""We should probably hire an assistant soon. We did so much better when Sky was around," Jayce said offhandedly.
"Ah," Viktor looked uneasy, "I think I can handle it for now,"
"Ok... But it's a lot that can overwhelm pretty quickly. Paperwork, letter writing, meeting requests," he listed off from his Councilor days, "It'll keep you in the lab more,"
"I will think on it," Viktor said wiping his hands on a napkin, "I do not want to give responsibility away to someone else when I am needed,""Alright," he said skeptically but dropped it.
They spent the next several hours answering questions meeting people and generally getting into the swing of things. Jayce was happy to meet everyone, answered questions about his skills and spoke at length with the engineering department that had previously been a rotating group. They were excited about the workshop and the forge remodeling that were underway.
By the time people started leaving for the day he was tired. His voice was growing hoarse from talking so much. He hung out in the lobby thanking people for their first day and bidding them goodnight.
He figured that was all the employees and started making sure lights were off on the first floor before locking up and heading upstairs. He found Viktor in his second floor office.
"Everyone is out," Jayce took the seat across Viktor's desk, "Today went well!"
"Indeed," Viktor said without looking up from his notes, "Many skilled professionals with an appetite for experiments are on board. We might actually be able to get results sooner than anticipated,"
Jayce took in the hunched posture and look of concentration Viktor had. He remembered years of this, how easily they fell into the pattern of working with each other immediately, the desperate air to all of the late nights and then crying as he carried Viktor's limp body. Frightened he really was gone. Determined to do anything to bring him back. Pressing the hexcore to Viktor. Watching the slack face every day while the hexcore held him.
Jayce was shaking. He couldn't help the harsh gasp as he tried to breathe. A loud thunderous roaring blocked out the world around him.

"Our paths diverged long ago. It was affection that held us together,"

Viktor's retreating form, changed and strong leaving him. Leaving him with only the responsibility of his council seat. The crushing realization that he had loved Viktor for many years and now he was gone.
"Jayce!" Viktor was holding his face. He couldn't speak. He had a hard time telling what was real. A healthy young Viktor before him flashed to the blanket draped version fresh from the Hexcore leaving him. He took in short quick breaths. He felt like he was drowning.
"Breathe. You are safe. Follow my breathing," Viktor tried to help him pace his breathing. Jayce pressed his face into Viktor's stomach and tried to focus on breathing. His head hurt and he still choked as he tried to breathe.
He didn't know how long it took but breathing came easier now and he slowly relaxed his grip on Viktor and pulled away slightly.
"See, better," Viktor soothed.
"Sorry," he whispered. His face was wet and so was Viktor's shirt.
"What happened?" Viktor asked softly. His eyes searching and concerned. Jayce felt wrung out.
"Memories," he muttered and wiped his face. Viktor ran a gentle hand through Jayce's hair, "Sorry,"
"Don't apologize for having emotions," Viktor said softly, "You have experienced much. Much of which I feel responsible for,"
"You haven't done anything," Jayce hugged Viktor again.
"A version of me did," Viktor said sadly.
"I don't want to be like this," Jayce whispered, "Hung up on the past when the future is bright and right in front of me,"
Viktor rubbed his back and was quiet for a long time.
"Come, let's enjoy this brighter future then," Viktor said.
They left the lab and headed out to the bustling market. The sun was just setting and the street lights were flickering on as they entered the market. Jayce looked around with a half smile. The market had several restaurants and shops with a water fountain in the middle with chairs and tables scattered.
Viktor lead him to a restaurant in a quieter side street. It had lots of meats and pasta dishes on the menu and the smell was of grilled meat and spices.
"Welcome in" a friendly woman at the counter greeted, “What can we get started for you?""The fish please," Viktor looked to Jayce. Jayce watched a dish be delivered to another person with a heap of chicken and vegetables over a plate of rice.
"Whatever that is," Jayce pointed to the plate.
"Chicken Veg coming up!"
They paid and took a seat in the corner. Jayce took in the colorful decor. It felt different from many of the restaurants he'd been in.
"This place reminds me of Zaun," Viktor said conversationally, "Found it soon after becoming Hiemerdinger's assistant,""Do you miss it? Zaun I mean?““Sometimes," he rocked his glass of water along the bottom edge and nearly tipped water out, "There's not really much for me there. I can get good food here occasionally and it helps,"
Jayce watched the glass before looking up to Viktor's face. Viktor was in thought and didn't seem to notice he was frowning. Jayce placed a hand over Viktor's nearly tipping the water out.
"If you ever want me to make you something from home I'd be happy to learn the recipe,"
Viktor smiled slightly at that. Their food was delivered and they ate. Jayce enjoyed the food. It was a bit greasy and it had some unusual vegetables but otherwise a delicious meal. Viktor picked his way through his fish and rice seeming to savor it.
They finished and headed back out. The fountain had colorful lights in the water and children were playing along the edge before parents caught them. Couples were strolling along and groups were laughing together at tables.
This is a beautiful evening.
"Thank you," Jayce said to Viktor.
"Of course," Viktor said without breaking his stride, "Let's get back. I have work I want to finish before tomorrow,"
Jayce shook his head and caught up as they left the market behind.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The week went by faster than either of them expected. Their team taught them what the equipment they were unfamiliar with was for, how to use it and a description of how their projects could benefit.
Jayce worked with the engineers on different prototype designs and was excited that the building renovations were almost done.
"Next week the forge should be ready and I want to get started on making these," he held up the blueprints for their first prosthetic, "At least one solid version to build. Then we can work on testing its fittings," Jayce said to the group of four that were directly working with him. They were a bright bunch and Jayce was happy with the way the team worked together.
They finished for the day and Jayce stayed working for a while longer. He was deep in thought writing notes and observations.
"Thought I'd find you here,"Jayce jumped slightly and looked up quickly, surprised to find anyone here. Mel approaching him from the doorway.
"Mel," he greeted startled, "What are you doing here?" he grimaced at the way he asked. She has every right to be here, "Sorry, I didn't mean it like that. What brings you in?" Smooth save idiot.
"Just wanted to see how the first week has been," she stepped in and looked over the papers spread across his desk, "Seems like you've settled in," she said with amusement.
"Yeah, it's been a busy week," he remained seated as she shifted some of the papers, "We'll have a prototype hopefully by the end of the month,"
She put the blueprints she'd been examining down and gave him a curious look.
"You don't have to rush the projects,"
"It's not a rush if you've made them before. This time with better resources and some of trail and error out of the way. Not building it on yourself makes it that much easier. We even have a person willing to try our prototypes and give feedback!"
He rambled a bit and stood to show her some of the design diagrams they'd drawn on the boards. He didn't realize it until she looked down but he'd put his hand on her shoulder.
"Ah, sorry," he pulled his hand away quickly. He rubbed the back of his neck.

Got a little too familiar with her. Hope she doesn't hate me for it. Always have been a little touchy with people.

"It's fine," she gave him an amused smile, "You were saying?"
She drew him back in to conversation and he ended up telling her about the team and his thoughts on their skills.
"Seems like you have a solid team and are making progress," she had perched herself on the edge of his desk while he had spoken with her.
"Yeah, it's pretty exciting," he stood in front of his board with his hands on his hips, "It's not something I expected to move so quickly considering how it took years to crack-" hextech. Shit I can't say that! "Um..." he cleared his throat, "Anyway I don't mean to bore you with the details. We'll have results on my projects soon,"She studied him for a long moment before getting off the desk, "I look forward to seeing your prototype," she put a hand on his bicep. He looked from her hand to her face. She gave him a warm smile and said, "I'll let you have your evening back. Thank you for sharing, Jayce,"
He couldn't help but watch her shapely form as she left. The graceful sway of her steps drew his eyes down her back and followed her ass.
"Good night," he managed as she left. He sighed and slumped into his chair.

Almost blew it. Gotta be more careful when I'm around her. God's she's amazing.

He hurried up the stars and checked Viktor's office to see if he was there.
Empty.
He checked the hallways with lights left on, checking for people and shutting the lights off as he went. The second floor medical lab is where he found Viktor holding his head and reading intently.
"Glad I found you," Jayce said as he entered the room, "Got an unexpected visitor just a little bit ago," Jayce reached Viktor and noticed he was reading a book with a beautifully drawn plant diagram with tight handwriting around it.
"Mel stopped by," Viktor replied leaning back, "She gave me the notebook of the woman who made the garden, Mrs. Veronica Harper,"
Viktor ran a reverant hand over the illustration as he said her name. The writing was difficult to read in places but the art was a masterpiece. Every detail of the foliage was captured in color. She had spent many hours working on a single diagram.
"How did she get this?" Jayce asked looking over Viktor's shoulder.
"Said she went to Mr. Harper and he handed it over after she explained what we were doing here," Viktor looked up at him, "She knew everything about these plants. I've been reading and she took extensive notes about everything she knew or tried. Meticulously,"
Jayce smiled back at Viktor and they both took a moment to flip through the pages. Each page had detailed diagrams, added line work to highlight exactly what she was talking about and that same tight handwriting in the margins of every page. It was obvious she started with the art and then moved to the details in the way she placed things and had to number the paragraphs for them to make sense.
"She put her whole life into this," Viktor added, "Special moments and thoughts are interspersed into these notes,"
"Do you think there's something in here that can help?"
"One can only hope," Viktor flicked through more pages gently, "I want to copy the important information down so we don't ruin these. I wish we could make a copy of them instead,"
"There might be a way..." Jayce paced as he thought, a brilliant idea occurring to him.

Possibly taking the camera obscura technology and getting it to transfer onto a paper rather than film? Or making a film that is easier to bind in a book? We just need the impressions. Could it be done in color?

He took his small note book out of his back pocket and scribbled down some ideas for later. He went back to looking over the plant diagrams with Viktor.
"I want to look at the plants. There is one that I think can make a difference," he flipped to a bookmarked page and pointed at the plant in question. He looked at the plant and was overwhelmed with a sense of dejavu and dread.

Viktor excitedly drew him close to the hexcore sitting in the table. It whirred to life. When the plant touched it exploded into full growth overtaking the space on the table, towering over both of them. It's leaves a dark purple with a sticky circle pattern covering it. The experiments that frightened Heimerdinger. Viktor suspended and coming out changed. The odd pattern of the anomaly on Ekko's tree. The sickly pattern that had covered his own skin as he struggled to survive the chasm.

"How?" he whispered feeling sick, "We didn't make Hextech..." Jayce sat still in the chair next to Viktor. His mind chasing the effects of the hexcore touching anything organic.
"This was here before you were making any Hextech," Viktor looked over the pattern of the leaves, "You've seen this before?“"Yeah," Jayce said feeling hollow and helpless, "If it was here before... What if I wasn't the only one working on harnessing the Arcane? If it could be found naturally someone else could make Hextech and I'll be sent back. None of this will have happened," Jayce could feel panic rising.
"Ehh... Unlikely. You were pushing limits. No one else has the knowledge was possible," Viktor said in his theorizing voice. One that set aside emotional contributions and looked at the facts of a theory or experiment. That helped Jayce feel more stable for the moment.
"Right," Jayce tried to calm his mind, "And Heimerdinger destroyed all my research. The only ones who have anything from my apartment now are those kids..." he had a pang of realization that he hadn't followed up with Heimerdinger about the enforcer presence in the Undercity.
Focus Jayce. This plant is here without Hextech. How? Where did she get this plant? Is there a natural wild rune happening somewhere?

"- get the samples," Viktor said without looking at him.
"Where did she get this plant?"
"Oh," Viktor looked up at him briefly, "She didn't say. She was a well known botanist who would get species sent to her from all over," Viktor looked over the notes again, "Perhaps our groundskeeper will know," Viktor reluctantly closed the book and patted Jayce's leg, "It's late. We can worry about the plant tomorrow,"
They spoke as they headed to Viktor's apartment.
"I wasn't expecting anyone let alone Mel. Told her that I'd have a prototype by the end of the month. Almost blew it and talked about Hextech," Jayce admitted sheepishly.
"Would it be so bad if she knew?"
“I don't know. I know she'll ask me all sorts of questions and I probably will end up changing something by telling her. What if it's bad?""You have already changed the future. We are doing completely different things than you would have ever done. What difference would it make?"
Jayce thought about it for a moment. She would know more of what to do to make better changes. Any information I give her will change how she moves through the world. Might make her better prepared for a visit from Noxus.
"Maybe... But how do you tell someone in this situation?"
"Just tell her?" Viktor shrugged as he locked the door of his apartment behind them.
"Right," Jayce scoffed.
"Worked for me," Viktor sat at the table and rubbed his knee. Jayce started fixing some food and thought about that plant again.

If it has been here the whole time then I am safe. What exactly is the line of Hextech existing or not? Does it matter if it's me that makes it or not?

He placed the plates on the table and started eating. Viktor had pulled out his notes and was scribbling while taking distracted bites.
"It's getting late. I should head home soon," Jayce said looking at the clock.
"Stay tonight," Viktor said through a yawn, "No reason for you to walk home this late only to come back in a few hours,"
"Sure. I have a change of clothes in the forge," Jayce agreed. They finished eating and made their way down the hall to Viktor's bedroom.
They'd slowly added more things to make it more homey. Not enough to really make it a fully lived in space but that comes with time. Viktor followed slowly behind him.
Jayce started loosening his tie off and felt Viktor run a hand down his back. He paused for a moment. Viktor's hand moved to his ass and squeezed firmly. Jayce gasped a little and turned to Viktor with a grin.
Viktor pulled on his tie pulling them close. Jayce leaned down and waited. Viktor closed the space between them pressing their lips together. Jayce put his hands on Viktor's hips and felt Viktor's length on his thigh. He moaned softly into their kiss and Viktor deepened it, controlling the kiss and pushing Jayce backwards. The back of his knees hit the edge of the bed and he took a sudden seat.
He looked up at Viktor, who was smirking down at him. Viktor removed the tie and started unbuttoning Jayce's vest and shirt. Jayce felt his own erection pressing uncomfortable in his pants. Shirtless and hard, he was pushed roughly by the shoulder down on the bed. He reached out for Viktor who just pinned his hands down to his sides.
"Keep your hands to yourself until I tell you," Viktor said quietly, "Otherwise I might have to make you," a thrill of exciment at the prospect of being made to. Viktor raised an eyebrow at him with a serious face, "You'd like that wouldn't you," Jayce nodded not looking away from Viktor. Viktor smirked before pulled away, went to his dresser and pulled out a few bundles of rope.
Jayce swallowed, a shiver of pleasure coursed through him, and sat up, which earned him a slight glare from Viktor. He gave a mischievous smile in challenge and fell back when he was pushed back again.
Viktor walked around to the other side of the bed and sat dropping the rope next to Jayce. Viktor ran a hand down Jayce's chest. He arched into the touch and fluttered his eyes shut. Viktor trailed to his wrists and with a tight grip pulled his arms up over his head and started tying them together and then anchored them to the bed frame.
Jayce felt the light pat on his wrists as Viktor finished and pulled, testing the knots. It didn't budge. Another thrill coursed through him at the vulnerable position. Viktor walked back to the side with his feet and slowly unbuttoned Jayce's pants. Jayce lifted his hips and Viktor pulled his pants and underwear down at the same time. Once fully undressed, Viktor bound his ankles and tied them down to the bed posts so he couldn't close his legs.
"Now you'll do as you're told," Viktor said smugly as Jayce pulled against the ropes.Jayce couldn't help the smile as he watched Viktor get comfortable.
"You are smirking at me," Viktor noted as he crawled in next to Jayce in his sleep shirt and underwear.
"Just enjoying the view,"
"Hmm," Viktor hummed as he ran a hand up Jayce's side. He shivered as Viktor's touch ghosted over ticklish or sensitive areas. His skin raised with bumps as the light touch explored his body. He felt like every nerve was primed when Viktor's breath touched his skin right before pressing a kiss to the middle of Jayce's chest.
Jayce inhaled sharply at the contact and flexed his arms against his bonds. His thoughts were drifting away from him as he could only concentrate on the slow path Viktor was making across his chest and torso.
Hands grabbed him firmly squeezing both pecs and teasing his nipples. He gasped and arched into the touch. Viktor kneaded his chest and leaned down and took a nipple in his mouth. Jayce moaned as the sensations flooded him and he pressed into Viktor as much as he could. Viktor pulled away and moved lower trailing kisses. Jayce felt his muscles spasm causing his cock to bob as Viktor avoided touching it. Kisses down his inner thigh were hot and possessive.
He couldn't help flexing his thighs as Viktor moved between his legs and kissed his way back up the other thigh. Viktor stilled and looked up at him from between his legs and smirked before slowly biting his inner thigh. Jayce gasped and squirmed as pain and pleasure mixed. Viktor sucked the tender spot leaving a red welt. Jayce couldn't move away as Viktor shifted and repeated this process across his inner thigh and hip before moving to the other side.
He was lost in the sensations of pain and soothing pleasure Viktor was causing him. Bound and helpless to Viktor's will, he let his eyes close and inhaled at the bites and moaned with the sucking. His thighs felt like they were blazing with welts.
Viktor paused and ran a hand over his work causing Jayce to whine, twitch and jerk as the tender flesh was pressed.
"You are gorgeous," Viktor murmmered before standing up. Jayce panted as he looked up at Viktor, "We'll have to do this again with more time to tease you,"
Viktor ran both hands up his thighs before wrapping one hand around his cock. Jayce bucked into his grasp and twitched as the other hand pressed into the tender spots. The friction wasn't enough. He whined as he tried to rock his hips. Viktor smirked at him as he removed his hand without finishing a full stroke. Jayce exhaled disappointed and pulled against his ropes again to no avail.
"Please, V," was all Jayce could manage.
"Will you do as you are told?" Viktor asked, meeting Jayce with a heated gaze. Jayce nodded fervently, "I am going to release your hands. You will do your best to sit up and move closer to the edge of the bed. Understand?"
“Yes," he whispered. Viktor nodded once and moved to free his hands.
Once free of the rope he followed Viktor's instructions. His legs were spread wide, knees bent, and he was as close to the edge of the bed as he could be. Viktor had moved back around and was admiring him. Jayce blushed slightly at the attention.
Viktor took his clothes off and stroked his own erection as he continued to look at Jayce splayed open for him. Jayce drank in the flush of his skin and the boney but healthy muscle tone of Viktor's body. Sharp in places, soft in others but right now a devious smirk played across his face.
"Use your fingers," Viktor said as he stared between Jayce's legs. He slowly moved his hand down his stomach, brushing his erection briefly and began fingering himself.
Viktor dribbled some lube over his fingers as he slowly worked himself open. Being watched and told what to do while his legs were spread open left him feeling exposed and aroused in new way. He relaxed into the sensations and sank another finger in. Viktor watched him as he worked his way up to a third finger before stopping him.
This time ropes were looped around his wrists and forearms and tied with his arms stacked on top of eachother. Jayce pulled against the rope when Viktor stepped away. He wouldn't be able to get out of this without serious ingenuity or help. He closed his eyes briefly as Viktor ran a hand over his body.
He inhaled sharply and opened his eyes as Viktor grabbed his cock firmly and stroked as he pressed his own erection between Jayce's cheeks, rocking in time with the strokes.
"Please, V. I-I need you," Jayce begged. Viktor closed his eyes and bit his lower lip before shifting so he was angled just right to slowly press into Jayce. Jayce watched as Viktor poured more lube over them. Viktor's hair was framing his face as it fell forward. Jayce wanted to touch him and tuck the hair back but couldn't move to do anything like that. Viktor pressed in and they both moaned at the sensation. He took his time moving in, savoring all the sounds Jayce was making.
Viktor grabbed his bound arms with one hand and used that as leverage to pull himself fully into Jayce. They stayed like that for a moment. Jayce felt so full. As Viktor moved back out he clenched around him, not wanting the feeling to end but anticipating more. He was so hard and wanted more. Viktor pushed slowly back in, his eyes were all over Jayce's body but kept coming back to where they were joined. Jayce followed that gaze and felt another thrill of pleasure as Viktor set a steady slow pace. They rocked like that for a moment before Viktor groaned and grabbed Jayce's thigh with his other hand causing pain to jolt through him as tender skin was pressed hard.
Gasping with the mixed pleasure and pain Jayce got lost in the sensations as Viktor increased the pace. Skin slapped loudly as Viktor thrust into him. Jayce watched as Viktor approached his climax. His face contorted with strain and his breathing rapid as he spilled his release deep into Jayce. Viktor moaned as he slowly rocked into him as his orgasm finished.
The warm slickness and the fullness left Jayce dizzy with arousal. Viktor stroked him slowly but firmly without pulling out. He arched into the stroke and teetered on his own climax. Viktor held Jayce's balls firmly and tugged as he sped up. Jayce moaned at the sensation and watched Viktor's hand get covered in his white sticky release. Viktor kept stroking him slower but just as firmly. Jayce jerked as each stroke jolted him with pleasure on his oversensitive cock. Viktor teased him for just a moment longer before releasing him and slowly pulling out.
Jayce groaned and his legs shook as he tried to catch his breath. Viktor wiped his hand and gently cleaned Jayce up before untying his legs, which hung over the edge of the bed. He couldn't move his legs for a bit as he waited for his muscles to relax. His hips were sore and his thighs were tender.
Viktor leaned over him as he untied the ropes binding his arms and massaged the marks the ropes left. Jayce flexed his fingers before cupping Viktor's face and pulling him down for a kiss.
"A repeatable experience?" Viktor asked as they settled into an embrace.
"Absolutely," Jayce pulled him in for another kiss.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

They spent a while quietly looking for the plant Viktor wanted to see. The garden had an artifical organic feel. The plants had been placed purposefully but been given decades to grow and reseed themselves with little interference.
They found it tucked away down a small branch of the twisting labyrinth. It had a strange leaf pattern. It reminded Jayce uneasily of the Arcane anomaly even more than the diagram. It was a wide translucent circle fan-like panels on a dark green leaf that grew in a tall tower with the leaves bunched together at the top and widening at the bottom as their size pulled them further away from the stalk.
"Mrs. Harper notes that the leaves are delicate but filled with fluid. The fluid can be used as a salve on wounds and tends to work best when diluted," Viktor continued giving the full break down of the plant's properties and tests she had run.
Jayce tentatively reached out to touch the plant. It didn't move. No flicker of blue arcane. Hesitantly he closed the last few inches. It was a soft leaf with a thick skin and gooey core much like an aloe plant. The edges were thin and scalloped but nothing in it felt magical. The other organics touched by the Arcane had felt charged. These plants were... just plants.
He let out a breath of relief. He was probably safe. This was something other than Hextech.
"It's beautiful," Viktor whispered next to him. Jayce looked over to see the same wonder Viktor looked at any of their Hextech.
Viktor's changed body wrapped in his blanket leaving their lab. Leaving him.

He shook his head and wrapped an arm around Viktor and they both inspected the plant.
Several samples collected later and a copious amount of notes they headed down to the lab and started processing the samples.

Jayce set the cup of sweetmilk beside Viktor's notepad. The quiet murmmering of staff working filled the space.
"What is this?" Viktor asked barely looking up from his notes.
"A drink," Jayce leaned against the table looking down at Viktor, "Your favorite,"
"Why?" Viktor stopped and glared up at him, "I am not leaving my research. I will need a better bribe," Jayce chuckled as he handed Viktor a letter addressed to both of them.
"I think we might have an invite," Jayce let Viktor open the letter and read it. Viktor scoffed and handed the letter back.
"I will not be attending,"
"They aren't that bad," Jayce said before reading.
Misters Viktor and Jayce Talis,

You are cordially invited to the Medical Advancements Conference. We hope you will be willing to share any new advancements or discoveries your facility will make in the next 6 months. We invite you to prepare a presentation. If you have any questions please send us a missive.

Thank you,

Trenton Edison

President

Piltover Medical Society
"Already?" Jayce remarked. Viktor gave him a quizical look, "Invites to the medical society are rare,"
"We are the pet project of the wealthiest woman in Piltover. People will take notice," Viktor returned to his notes but did sip the sweetmilk.
"I don't want to do these without you," Jayce said quietly, "Last time... It was easy to overshadow you. This is your project. You're the lead,"
"Public speaking isn't my strong suit," Viktor shrugged, "You are charismatic and approachable. A friendly face,"
"Yeah," he said hesitantly. That's exactly why I was pushed into the limelight and not you, "Maybe we can compromise. I want you to be known as the one in charge and given the accolades. Not me. But I can speak on your behalf,""That means I still must attend," Viktor said in an annoyed way that anyone else would have missed the petulant element to his tone. Jayce just smiled.
"Yup, just for appearances. Can't have you be in the shadows forgotten. You'll have to work on being mysterious and aloof, "
"I can be mysterious and aloof," Viktor leaned back and crossed his arms. Jayce chuckled. Viktor looked like a surly man with a pout.
"Maybe we get Mel to help you," Jayce looked to the last letter in his hand, "Looks like we got a letter from her too," he handed the letter over to Viktor to open. Jayce read over his shoulder.

Viktor and Jayce,

My apologies for the visit with no notice yesterday. I did not mean to intrude but I was too excited to deliver the notebook.

Please accept an invite to dinner Friday night as apology. It will also serve as a congratulations on the forge finally being finished.

Mel
"Seems like we have an attentive patron," Viktor handed the letter over to Jayce who rubbed a thumb over her name. The address at the bottom of the letter wasn't somewhere he'd gone before.
"I think she's suspicious of me," he frowned.
"Tell her Friday night then," Viktor had returned to his microscope.
"Maybe... What if she wants nothing to do with me? I could seriously mess things up for us," he scrubbed his face with a heavy hand. Why does this have to be so difficult?
"She is a smart woman. There is value in knowing someone who's seen the future," Viktor peered into the scope as he spoke, "It has presented many opportunities. It changes the variables of other things but it has its merits. Besides she likes you,"
"It's not the same," Jayce nearly whined, "She's our patron directly. Last time it was the general council with Heimerdinger as our project oversight. We didn't get together until later. I was a councilor," he hissed the last part quietly to Viktor.
"Just tell her Friday. It won't end poorly,""You think so?"
"It's a risk," he shrugged like it wouldn't matter either way, "Tell her or not it won't change that I'm making progress either way,"
Jayce thought on it for the rest of the afternoon.
How to tell her.

They stayed late working on the new plant samples. The team working directly with Viktor stayed beside them late into the night. Their boards were covered in ideas, formulas and projections. Someone had taken their results and pinned them to the wall.
Jayce took a moment to stretch and took in the room. Five staff members were scattered at the different stations. One slouched in an uncomfortable position where they'd clearly fallen asleep. Viktor hunched over paperwork and hastily jot down notes a few desks away from him. Everyone else was working deligently but clearly exhaustion was catching up to them.
He placed a hand on the sleeping person and gently woke them up.
"Hey, time to go home and get some rest," he said kindly, "Thanks for working so hard,"
"Uuggghhh," they said sleepily, "I'm fine. Just resting my eyes,"
"Yeah, and I think you should rest them somewhere more comfortable. Come on. I'm going to send people home,"
He walked over to Viktor and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. Viktor jumped at the contact and quickly looked up with a glare.
"V, we've got to send people home," Jayce spoke quietly and nodded to the staff members who were starting to doze off as they worked, "We should get some rest too," Viktor was about to argue when several people yawned and were clearly sleepy.
"I suppose they aren't going to be doing their best like this," Viktor reached for his cane and stood, "Excuse me everyone," he spoke loudly to the room, "It is very late. Go home and get some rest,"
"If you don't feel safe walking or are just too tired please stay and get some rest on a couch in the break room," Jayce added.
Everyone slowly grabbed their things and made their way out murmmering their goodnights. Viktor stayed in the lab as Jayce headed down with everyone to lock up behind them. Jayce watched them all walk out and assured them they weren't expected early the next day. He turned the lights off as he made his way back up to the lab.
Viktor was back to work looking over the notes and getting the next samples prepared for additional testing. A machine whirred up as he loaded a small piece of the plant to a jar.
"If we measure the exact composition of chemical structures we can create a table to find the balance between them and recreate this in a synthetic salve," Viktor said as Jayce entered."Let's rest for the night. This test will take a few hours,""There is too much to do," Viktor waved off the idea, "I can continue. Come here and help me," he handed Jayce a stack of papers.
"You're exhausted," Jayce put the papers down and Viktor had already moved on to another station, "V," he followed Viktor around the room as he collected papers from the different stations.
"I'm finally making progress. If we can determine all the
components we can start testing which pieces create the healing factors,"
"I know. You're going to figure it out," he put a hand over Viktor's, "You're making mistakes pushing like this,"
They both looked down at the paperwork he was trying to read that was upside down. Viktor frowned at him and turned the paper.
"I'm just a little tired,""You're practically dead on your feet,"
Viktor scoffed before muttering, "Truer than you know,"
Jayce cupped Viktor's face in both his hands and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead.
"I do know. You get many years of good health before things get real serious. Don't burn yourself out right now. We'll rest and come back at it tomorrow,"
Viktor held his gaze for a long moment before he sighed in surrender.
"Fine, but I will be back early to work on this again,"
"Let's get some rest and then we can work on it more,"

They were focused the next few days. Viktor pushed hard into the plant research. Jayce left him to his work and headed down to the forge. Several workers were putting finishing touches on the forge.
"Wow, it's really coming together," Jayce commented as he approached the foreman, a big burly man with a friendly smile and wrinkles.
"Mr. Talis! Good to see you. Should be ready today," he clapped Jayce on the shoulder in greeting.
"Porter, it's just Jayce, please," Jayce returned the gesture with a wide smile. He looked over the room as people were carrying in tables and shelves, "This is where amazing new technologies are going to be made. Thank you for your hard work,"
"It's been a pleasure,"
Jayce stepped over to the anvil and ran his fingers across the top of it.

How many lives will these inventions change? I have to work hard. I can't wait to get back into it. It's been too long. The last time I made anything in the forge was his hammer. A weapon. Never again.

He helped the team attach the shelving to the walls, move the tools in and finish the placement of furniture.
They put the last items in and all took a moment to admire the hard work. Jayce couldn't wait to get the fire started.
"Looks like that's it folks!" Porter turned to his team, "Thank you for your hard work,""Thank you all," Jayce stood beside him and looked over the team, "Your hard work and experienced hands have made this place. It's better than I imagined,""Have a good weekend off. I'll see you a Monday," Porter waved them off and grabbed his bag, "Hope you make something good with this. It's a good plan you boys have here,""I'll do my best everyday. Don't be a stranger, Porter," Jayce stuck his hand out for a handshake and Porter took it.
"I'll see you around, Jayce," Porter smiled and left leaving Jayce alone in the finished forge.

Wish I could get some work started today. Maybe if we get back from dinner soon enough.

A familiar nervousness settled on him again. Tonight the dinner with Mel was going to be a make or break for his future. She could destroy everything they'd worked on if she wanted to.

It's Mel. She'll listen. She might be mad about not being told. Not vengeful. She just invested a lot of money on this project and seems sincerely interested in the research.

He tried to console himself with that but the pit of worry lingered as he and Viktor got ready.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

"Stop fussing," Viktor scolded under his breath as they rode in the fancy metal carriage Mel had provided to pick them up.
"Sorry, just nervous," Jayce said sheepishly. He'd been adjusting his clothes and bouncing his leg. Viktor held his hand and gave him an unimpressed look.
They arrived and the driver held the door open for both of them. Jayce got out first and helped Viktor out. The restaurant was on the pier and had a very austere entrance. The doors were large and black with a red trim. They headed in and a woman in a red dress greeted them.
"Good evening, gentlemen," she dipped her head and guided them to a small podium, "Your names?"
"Jayce Talis and Viktor," Jayce answered for both of them. The walls were a dark red with black accents and fabrics. Small alcoves with tables and people dining filled the space. It was both a large room and secluded hideaway at the same time.
"Thank you, this way," she walked down the hallway and pulled a thick black curtain aside. They entered and found a quiet room with a couple sofas arranged around a low table and open windows that looked over the water. Mel leaned out the window breathing in the night sea air. Jayce couldn't take his eyes off her. She had that soft expression she got occasionally when she was lost in thought or painting.
"Good evening, Councilor," Viktor greeted. The expression was gone the moment Viktor spoke. Replaced with the friendly but guarded smile she usually gave them. Her dress was white and black with a lace overlay that patterned in a swirl around her body.
"Evening gentlemen," Mel greeted as she approached, "Thank you for accepting my invitation," she gestured for them to take a seat, "Congratulations, Jayce. Your forge is ready," she sat on the sofa furthest from the door, they took the one across from her.
"Thank you," Jayce replied, his tongue feeling heavy as he tried to push the nerves down, "Tomorrow I'll be able to use it properly,"
"Excellent," her eyes lingered on him for a moment, "Please enjoy the wine. It's a local favorite," she held her own glass up for a toast. Jayce and Viktor held theirs aloft too, "To progress,"
"To progress," they both clinked their glasses to Mel's and sipped. Jayce briefly closed his eyes as if he was savoring the taste but really was trying to collect himself.
"We have received an invite to the Medical Advancements Conference," Viktor said, "Have you made an announcement?"
"I may have mentioned I had a new project to a few people," she gave a sly smile, "If you are both ready to present in a few months it would be good publicity and potentially get us more resources,"They were briefly interrupted by food being brought in and an extra bottle of wine set out in a ice bucket.
"Jayce will do the public speaking," Viktor leaned back on the sofa holding his wine glass, "He is more charismatic and can handle the attention,"
"You don't want to be the face of your work?" Mel asked as she plated some food.
"What was it you suggested? I remain mysterious and aloof," Viktor glanced at Jayce. Jayce gave him a quick smile before also plating some food.
"It's fine. Done that before. As long as people know your name too,"
"They certainly will," Mel said, "I'm sure you'll both receive more invitations and requests to speak as time goes on,""Most of what we will be covering will be too advanced for the common person. What is the point of explaining it to them at a party?" a little annoyance tinged his voice.
"To excite and intrigue them. Spreading the message of your work is half the effort, Viktor," she chided.
"Dazzle and excite," Viktor looked to Jayce, "Definitely something you're better at,"
"I am interested in knowing how you gained this experience," she turned her attention to Jayce. He felt the nervousness crash over him again.

Is this the moment? Do I say something now? Viktor is setting this up for me.

Viktor raised an eyebrow as if to say 'Do it already'.
"Yeah... about that," Jayce rubbed the back of his neck trying to avoid meeting both of their eyes. There was a long silence that unsettled him. He glanced up and saw Mel give Viktor a quizzical look and Viktor rolled his eyes.
"Jayce," Viktor said quietly, "Just tell her,"
"Tell me what?" Mel sat up straighter, alert. Jayce sighed and gave Viktor a pleading look but didn't help him, "I'm going to need an answer, Jayce," the ways she said his name made him feel like he was very small and had been caught taking a cookie out of the jar before dinner.
Jayce paced the room nervously looking at Mel as she watched him.

Ok, you can do this. You told Viktor already. She'll believe me right? Will she think I've lost my mind and drop the project? I could lose everything we've built!

He looked at Mel and was hit with another wave of nerves. She focused on him with an intensity he had never really seen before. She was suspicious of him.
"You're not going to believe me," Jayce finally said, "And I'm going to jeopardize everything if you don't,"
"I will make that determination after you tell me whatever it is you need to tell me," she said sternly.
Jayce gulpled, looked to Viktor before taking a deep breath and closed his eyes.
"I've given many speeches and gone to many galas. Spoken before investors, convinced many to support our work and even given a Progress Day Speech in place of Heimerdinger," he pause and looked to her, "I was even a councilor at one point... All for Hextech,"
"Hextech?" she frowned, "You never built it," she shook her head, "A councilor? You're not making any sense,"
"Those things didn't happen here. I'm from the future. A future that went very differently from this timeline,"
Well there it is. Does she believe it? He opened his eyes and she had a confused look.
"What do you mean you're from... the future? How?"
"In that timeline Viktor and I made Hextech. We made sense of the rune system and made incredible inventions," he looked to Viktor who shifted uncomfortably, "Things went wrong and everyone dies. I got sent back to stop Hextech from being created,"She was quiet for a long moment watching him. She studied him and after what felt like an eternity to Jayce, she relaxed.
"Tell me about this future,"
He explained the whole thing. He only held back the part of them being together. She asked many questions and Jayce answered them the best he could. It was hard recalling the time in the chasm and the creepiness of being watched. The pain of knowing it was Viktor all along... the apocalyptic future. To be sent back ready to kill Viktor in his original timeline.
"That is... a lot to take in," Mel replied softly as she sat back in her chair. She looked to Viktor, "You've known the whole time?"
"He told me the first night he was back. The night after the council decided to remit him to his mother's care instead of banishment," Viktor answered, "It is a lot but it seems to check out. He knew too many of my secrets for it not be true,"
Viktor and Mel held their gaze for a long moment. The smallest expressions passed between them, Jayce didn't understand the meaning but they apparently did. Viktor looked up to Jayce and frowned.
"You have one last element to add,""What?" Jayce asked and then remembered, "Oh," he blushed slightly, "Do I have to?"
"Yes," Mel and Viktor answered at the same time. Jayce rubbed his hand heavily over his face, "Okay. The last part was that we..." he gestured to Mel, "We were together. After you helped me become a councilor,"
He hesitantly met her eyes. She had a faint smile on her face and a curious look.
"Did we end on bad terms or something?" she asked, "Why would you be nervous to tell me?"
“Oh, no we didn't end badly..." his eyes drifted to Viktor who looked slightly smug.
"He felt like he had to choose," Viktor answered, watching her.
"Choose?" she said puzzled at first but quickly put it together and said to Viktor, "We must have gotten together while your health was failing,"
"And that he hadn't admitted to himself that he wanted both of us," he looked to Jayce, "A little identity crisis in the mix too,"
"I see," she shared a smirk with Viktor, "He has been friendlier than I expected. This past history makes so much sense. Were you and Viktor together in your original timeline too?""No," Jayce said quietly, "You don't seem upset or surprised at this,""Should I be?" she had an amused smile, "I can see the appeal," she looked him up and down. He knew that look. That appraising eye. He shivered in anticipation under her gaze.
"It is very appealing," Viktor said also eyeing him. Mel turned to Viktor and gave him an gave him a quick smile before standing.
"Jayce," she approached him slowly, "Thank you for telling me. This explains some of the odd things you've said,"Jayce watched her as she approached, stopping in front of him.
"You believe me? You aren't upset that I kept this a secret?"
"It's not exactly an easy thing to just tell someone," she put a hand on his arm, "You're still going to work on what we've planned. Don't worry about that. You've done a good job in saving us from that disaster of a future," she leaned into his space before saying, "Do you have anything else you need to tell me?" her eyes pierced through him.
He nodded without thinking. I love you. He thought loudly as his eyes went to her lips.
"I missed you," Jayce whispered, "When I was alone, thought I was going to die. You two were the only ones I could think of. Pleaded to be able to see again," he took a small step towards her and she searched his eyes while all he could do was drink her in. Her smell, her looks, all of her.
"Then you landed in the past with the chance to make it right," she said quietly, "You've carried a heavy burden on your shoulders,"
His hands itched to pull her close and hold her. He closed his eyes and waited a long moment before speaking.
"I know what we had before doesn't mean it can happen again. But those feelings for you are still there,""Thank you for telling me,"
He opened his eyes and searched hers. I could kiss her right now. He thought as he got lost in her face. He didn't dare make a move to do so. This was still Councilor Medarda, his patron. She gave him a soft smile before patting his arm and letting her hand fall away.
"I have much to think about," she said to Jayce before turning to Viktor, "I don't know how you do it,"
"Do what?" Viktor asked confused.
"Keep working when there's a distraction in your lab," she left with a smirk and closed the door behind her.
Jayce looked to Viktor with a bit of shock. Did all of that really just happen? She knows! She's not weirded out. Took that pretty well. Oh gods, she was flirting with me.Jayce had a moment of wonder and then a big grin at the relief of the moment.
"That went better than expected," Viktor said, "I think you might have a chance with her,"
"Viktor!" Jayce choked out, "I thought I was going to ruin everything!" he ran his hands through his hair, "You really think so?"
"You will have to find out for yourself but there is attraction," Viktor stood, "You should go home and rest. This was obviously a lot,"
"Yeah... That might be helpful. Just... Wow," Jayce pulled Viktor in for a kiss. He felt excited and unable to keep the goofy grin off his face.

Maybe I really can have both of them. What a thought!

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Sweat dripped into his eyes as he worked. The forge was hot and metal poured into the mold forms he had prepared. Delicately filling them took all his concentration. He set his tools down and wiped the sweat from his forehead. These prototypes were some of the first he'd been able to make in full. Just a little more work and we can get the test fits finished. He plunged the metal into a barrel of water he had nearby and set them aside to cool. He took a moment to clean up his work station and drink some water. "Oh!" a voice squeaked. He looked up and found Sky standing in the doorway covering her eyes shyly. "Hello, Sky," he greeted with an amused chuckle. "Sorry for interrupting!" "I'm done for a bit. How can I help you?" "Well I..." she dropped her hand briefly and looked at him again. She turned bright red and covered her eyes again, "Do you always work shirtless?" "Oh..." he looked down at his bare chest covered in soot and sweat, "It's hot in here so I usually don't wear a shirt. Hold on I'll put one on," he found his undershirt and threw it on, "All covered now," his arms were still exposed but he was too sweaty to bother putting a proper shirt on and risk ruining it. "Right," she glanced at him and blushed again. She settled for keeping her eyes focused up and not on him, "I was wondering if you would mind helping me move a delivery in to Viktor's apartment. Delivery men placed things in the hallway outside the apartment,""Yeah! V, told me you were going to help liven the place up," he made sure the forge was safely monitored by the other blacksmith, Tina, before heading up with her. "It's been enough time that he should make it his home. Hanging art on walls, a comfy chair, the little touches that make it feel like home,""He hasn't really spent too much time in the apartment," Jayce admitted as he unlocked it, "We kinda just crash here when we're too tired. I fix meals so the kitchen is fairly set," she gave him a disapproving look when they entered the kitchen. "It's functional I'll give you that. But it doesn't have any personality or life," Sky walked around the space, "Tell you what, you help me place the bigger pieces I can't move on my own and you let me work my magic," Jayce couldn't help the small flinch at the word magic. If she saw it she didn't say anything about it. They worked on moving furniture into place traded out rugs for new ones and shuffled the entertaining space around in the room with the bar. She ushered him out and promised he could cook her dinner. "Don't come back until you're bringing Viktor for dinner," she smirked and closed the door behind him. Viktor was running experiments in the lab when Jayce found him. There were several machines humming loudly and others were spinning liquids. "Sky has kicked me out until dinner time. She says she's bringing life to the place," Jayce sat next to Viktor and picked up a notebook. "I told her this was not necessary. The apartment was fine as it was. She insisted and I didn't care to argue anymore," Viktor continued working as he spoke. "Yeah she seems determined," Jayce was distracted by the notes and they worked together for long time. They entered the apartment many hours later and were greeted with soft music playing and some sounds in the kitchen. Jayce toed his shoes off and followed Viktor into the living room. There were paintings on the walls and a couple of blankets artfully draped across the sofa. Viktor touched the blankets and looked around. It felt more complete somehow. Things on the walls made it feel established. There were new end tables that could be used as leg rests if needed. Books stacked neatly on them to invite reading and relaxation. "Oh good you're home!" Sky had a smile as she approached from the kitchen, "What do you think so far?““Lovely work, Sky," Viktor leaned on his cane and peered past her into the kitchen, "What are you working on?" “Dessert," she waved dismissively, "Let me give you the tour," They followed her from room to room. More art on the walls, small decor touches, shelves added to bare walls, and matching bathroom cups and dispensers. "This is the one I want to keep working on but this is a good start," she said before entering the entertaining room. They entered and the room had been fully decorated. The walls and ceiling were covered in sheer blue fabric with flickering lights behind it giving a soft glow. They were gathered in a way that created intentional folds and fell from a center point in the room where a crystal chandelier reflected the soft blue light. The seating had been moved to create an intimate space. There were large cushions on the floor for sitting
and a low table that was easy to sit on the floor and use. The rug she had him help move in took up most of the middle of the room. It had blue swirls that looked like ocean waves. The bar was partially covered in the same flickering lights the chairs were wrapped with similar sheer fabric. Jayce moved behind the bar and noted there were fancy glassware, napkins, and cocktail making supplies. "What do you think?" Sky asked excitedly. "You should have gone into interior design," Viktor spoke with awe in his voice, "This room is transformed," he gave her a genuine smile, "Thank you," she blushed. "It was fun," she took a seat at the bar, "I'm just glad you like it," "We should have a drink," Jayce said pulling out a bottle of whisky and poured three glasses, "To Sky and her impecible taste," They raised their glasses and drank. Jayce relished the taste and burn down his throat. Viktor was watching him. Jayce smiled softly at him and placed a hand over his. "If you want me to do any other spaces I'd love to. This was so much fun imagining what to do and gathering the right pieces. This room needs a bit more. Maybe different seating but it'll do for now," Jayce cooked them a nice dinner and brought it into the entertaining room where Jayce and Sky sat on the floor cushions and Viktor sat on the sofa with his leg propped up. They filled her in on the different projects they had in the works while they ate. Even enjoyed the sweet custard dish Sky had made."Sounds like you are going to make quick progress if those plants are anything to go off of," Sky commented. "If we can improve lives then it will be worth it," Viktor said. "We will," Jayce pat Viktor's good leg. "You two are so sweet," Sky smiled at them. Viktor glared at her briefly, "I'm headed out. You two don't stay up too late," "I'll walk you out," Jayce said as he got up, "I'll be right back," he said to Viktor before giving him a quick kiss. "Goodnight," she gave a little wave to Viktor in reply. They headed down the stairs chatting about the new prototype designs and people Sky knew that needed assistance. They made it to the main doors and stopped for a moment. "I'll reach out and see if they're interested. It's been more difficult to get in touch with anyone in the Undercity recently,""Why? Everything ok?" Jayce asked. He desperately wished he had paid more attention to Zaun when he first started working on Hextech. He'd know more about what he had changed. "Well... There has been some major changes that have made things more difficult," she crossed her arms and looked down. "Is it the enforcers? Did they do something?" "Enforcers?“ she repeated confused, "I guess. It might have started with them coming in and looking for the kids that broke into your apartment. But what really made everything worse was the death of one of the leaders. He had made it safer in the Lanes for a long time. Without him..." she looked away from him. Shit. Did I cause that? I know the increase of Shimmer grew out of control in these years. Made everyone desperate. "I'm sorry to hear that. Did you know him?" "Everyone knew of the Hound. I didn't know him personally but he made sure to keep people in line. It was still rough but you didn't have to join a gang in order to be safe,""The Hound," Jayce tried to place the name. He didn't recognize it, "Did he go by any other names?" "Obviously he had a different name but that's what we all knew him by. Maybe someone else would know. Did you know someone from the Undercity?" "I had some connections a long time ago," he couldn't help but think of Vi, Ekko, Jinx, Silco and the child working in the shimmer factory, the deal he almost made with Silco and the danger of playing politics when war could break out. "Jayce?" Sky repeated his name. "Sorry," he tried to shrug off the memories, "I'd like to know more about what's happening. If you could let me know if you hear anything else I'd appreciate it," "Sure... Who did you know? Maybe I can find out if they're ok,""That's kind of you," he thought for a moment, "They won't really remeber me. Violet or Vi and Ekko. They'll be young kids,""I'll ask around," she gave him a sad smile, "It's a hard place for kids but some of us survive, like me and Viktor," "Thanks," he gave her a quick hug, "Be safe out there," she left and he locked up. The Hound doesn't sound familiar. But if he's what was keeping the place safer then he must have died and caused the shimmer epidemic. Silco was responsible for that. So there must be a power vaccum that is being fought over right now. If Vi and Ekko are still alive then I probably haven't changed much. He made it back into the apartment and found Viktor asleep on the sofa where he left him. Jayce smiled to himself and carried Viktor to the bedroom. Viktor stirred as he was set on the bed. "I want to go back to the lab. I have work to do," he mumbled waking up slightly. Jayce started unbuttoning his shirt and pants."Why don't you get some rest and you can work in the morning," Jayce helped him out of his clothes."I have been resting all evening," he yawned as Jayce guided him to the pillow and pulled the blankets up around him."Just get some sleep, V," he got comfortable himself and turned the lights off. Curled around Viktor they both fell asleep.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

"Jayce, m'boy! Good to see you!" Heimerdinger greeted as he entered the councilor's office. Heimerdinger jumped down from his desk and his little poro followed happily behind."Thank you, Professor. I wanted to talk to you about somethings," Jayce followed Heimerdinger out to the balcony where there was a small table with a pitcher of fruit infused water. Jayce took the larger chair."Yes, I supposed you want to know about the Undercity and the Enforcers," a sad smile crossed his face."Do you have any information? There's a few people I want to follow up on," Jayce sat up straighter."The Enforcers found the children involved. They were unable to aprehend them but Enforcers were withdrawn after an explosion. Seemingly that explosion killed the kids involved," Jayce grimaced and looked down at that news. They didn't deserve this. "They were involved with one of the gang leaders. He's also dead now too," Heimerdinger poured both of them glasses and handed one to Jayce."Do you know the names of anyone?"
"All I know is that the children were identified as the ones involved in the robbery and the gang leader went by the name 'The Hound'. Beloved by many in the Undercity for many years,"
"The Hound... do you know his real name?""Do you think you'd know him?" Heimerdinger asked very curious, eyes bright, "I believe I have a file on him,""I might. But I do know a girl with pink hair and a real big attitude and a young boy who ran a shop I used to visit for supplies. They help me... later. I just want to make sure they're ok,"Heimerdinger hurried to his desk and came back quickly with several files and handed them to Jayce."You can look these over with me," he held his hand out waiting for a file. Jayce was surprised at the ease this amount of information was being given to him, "You trusted me with the information about the future. I'm excited to say that there will be more things for us to share as time goes on. You might not see the relevance of your knowledge now but it's all important,"They spent the next few hours pouring over the documents and complied any mentions of people matching descriptions or who could have been involved."The 'Hound' and his bar The Last Drop were prominent in keeping the area called the 'Lanes' safe after the uprisings. The 'Hound' was also known as Vander. He was known to adopt orphans off the streets," Heimerdinger read their collective notes, "Four children that matched the discription of those that stole from your apartment and ran back to the Undercity are presumed dead in the recent explosion,""Vander... That doesn't sound familiar," he thought for a moment, "Vi was from the Undercity and knew her way around but we didn't talk much. Caitlyn probably knew more but I didn't ask," Jayce held his head in his hands, "I barely know anything-"He thought back to the first time they really aligned. She sulked into the smithy and told him Caitlyn trusted him so she hoped he'd help now.

Vi gave me shit about throwing people in prison and not checking on them...
"Stillwater!" Jayce stood up quickly, "She was put in Stillwater for years. That's where she has to be now..." he looked to Heimerdinger, "Can you check for any recent prisoners matching Vi's description? I think she's been sent to Stillwater or will be,"
"Jayce," Heimerdinger watched him carefully, "Think about this. If you change the girl's path you might make significant changes to the way things go moving forward. I want you to proceed with caution,"
"Sir," Jayce snapped, "A young girl was sent to Stillwater prison and likely won't have a trial or will be grossly mistreated. You'd let her fate be sealed if you could do something about it?""She should get a trial, true," Heimerdinger rubbed his chin in thought, "But it will likely be the same fate. She would be found guilty of robbery and be sent to Stillwater for the rarity of the items she stole. Getting involved might not do her any favors,""I can't just let her stay there and not have a trial," he said determindedly, "Please just keep an eye on the inmates,""I promise," Heimerdinger gave him a solmen nod, "What about the other boy, Ekko? Was he sent to Stillwater too?""No," Jayce sighed, "He was in the Undercity and part of the Firelights, a ragtag rebellion group. You took him under your tutelge after..." Jayce looked at him sheepishly, "After I voted to get you removed from the Council,""Ah," Heimerdinger nodded, "So a bright mind! This boy should get an opportunity to come to the Academy,""I don't know how he'll take that but if we can confirm he's still alive..." Jayce let the statment linger. His thoughts were racing again.
If Ekko and Vi were allowed to have a childhood and education how would the change the course of things? Would it help or hurt them in the long run? Even if Vi gets convicted at least they'd have a trial. Something was wrong about this situation. He didn't even want to press charges.
"I'll check and let you know if I find anything," Heimerdinger looked to him expectantly, "Was there anything else?""Uh, yes," he shook himself to clear his thoughts, "Viktor found this plant in the medical facility garden that has many unusual and rare plants. It looks like the anomaly patterns. I touched it and it didn't react like the previous timeline's did when organic matter touched the Hextech. Could it be a problem for me? I want to make sure we aren't working with something like Hextech,""Hmmm," Heimerdinger paced the balacony, "Perhaps an organic manifestation? This plant has been there a long time?" Jayce nodded, "Do you know where it originated from?" he shook his head no, "Curious. What a mystery! I'll have to come down and look. I'll have to ask Councilor Medarda to invite me to see your progress,""Ah," Jayce grimaced at the mention of Mel, "She knows now,"
Heimerdinger looked to him quickly, "Why?""She was getting suspicious of me. I wasn't very good at hiding it from her," Jayce was ashamed and didn't meet his eyes, "I still love her and it feels wrong keeping something like this from her,""Love," he looked up at Heimerdinger who gave him a soft smile, "It makes life grand and difficult. If she knows then I'll just speak with her plainly. No point in keeping her in the dark. Keep an eye on that plant. Try to find out where it came from. If we can trace it's native location perhaps we can find another wild anomaly!"
Heimerdinger was far more excited about possibly finding a wild anomaly than Jayce thought was wise.
"Thank you, sir," he stood and started heading out but was stopped by Heimerdinger calling out to him."Jayce, try not to dwell on the other future. That timeline is gone and you should live this one,""I've been given a second chance and I'm not wasting it. If I can help others... I have to at least try," he left and let the door swing shut behind him.
At the top of the stairwell Salo was heading up. Their eyes locked and Salo sneered at him."Some audacity showing your face here," Salo made it to the top of the stairs, "So much potential wasted and now you're Medarda's pet," Salo looked him up and down before scoffing, "I must say... she does have taste,""What do you want?" Jayce rolled his eyes."Just surprised to see you here. Don't you have research to scurry away and do?" Salo waved a dismissive hand towards the stairs."Good day, Councilor," he turned to head down the stairs and only made a few before Salo's retort reached him."That's right go be a good little lap dog," Salo's mocking voice made Jayce bristle."You're just bitter you couldn't land her yourself," Jayce gave a grin over his shoulder, "I can give you a tip. Maybe try changing your personality," Salo frowned and was about to insult him when a group of people approached the landing. Jayce took the moment to continue down the stairs.

Stupid Salo. Never could mind his own business. Calling me her pet was out of line. Does mean people are watching us.

He made his way outside and heard someone call his name from down the street. He looked around and found Sky waving at him.
"Hey," he greeted, "How are you?"
"Great! Just coming in to help Professor Heimerdinger with a couple projects today. Saw he had a meeting with you and hoped I could catch you before you left," she gestured for him to follow her and headed off.
They headed down to the market and she went into one of the stores. It was an oddities shop and smelled like old leather and musty animal fur. Shelves were lined with books and taxidermy samples of a wide variety of species of bugs and animals. The middle of the space a giant skeleton of a bird. It was hung in a way that made it look like it was flying.
"Jayce, over here," Sky called from one of the paths before ducking back out of sight. He followed her and looked over the shelves as he passed that were covered in diagrams of plants or dried pressed flowers. Some even had small jars of cuttings.
"What is this place?" Jayce asked her as he stopped next to her. She was looking at the top shelf covered in a layer of dust.
"Stefan collects the strange and unusual. Sells it to those with an interest in the eclectic. This is like that plant you've been working on,"
Jayce immediately looked at the place she was pointing to. The same firm leaf structure branching over one another with a clear pane with anomaly patterns. Jayce pulled it down and read the label.

"Window of Health"
Arcanum Medicus

A rare plant with healing properties. Break the leaf open and use the fluid to heal wounds.

Discovered on an expedition of the coasts of Ionia.

"Ionia," Jayce whispered, "It's from Ionia,"
"That's a good thing right?" Sky asked.
"Yeah, really good," elated, he couldn't help the grin, "It's a clue,"
Jayce took the plant to the counter, anxious to get it back to Viktor.
"Tell Professor Heimerdinger what we found. Maybe he knows something that could help,"
"Of course," Sky looked excited, "Maybe we can make our own expedition!"
"Is this all?" the store clerk asked behind the counter. She was a short older woman and had a strict air about her.
"Could you tell me anything about this plant? Where it came from, who brought it here?" Jayce peppered her with questions as she pulled it closer and read the tag.
"It has been in this shop a very long time. All I know is what it says on the label,"
He handed her the payment and left slightly disappointed but otherwise excited to get back to the lab.
