Liam Dunbar stood at the edge of the decaying mansion, its once grand façade now shrouded in shadows. The air was thick with fog, the moon barely peeking through the swirling mist. A long-forgotten chill gnawed at his spine, and though the house looked abandoned, there was something deeply unsettling about it.
“Are you sure about this?” Liam’s voice was barely above a whisper as he glanced at Theo, his boyfriend of nearly a year.
Theo Reken, always the brave one in the relationship, shrugged with a smirk that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “It’s just a haunted house, Liam. What’s the worst that could happen?”
Liam shuddered, fingers curling into fists as he fought the urge to turn around and run. “I mean... it’s not
just
a haunted house. It’s
this
haunted house. People say strange things happen here.”
Theo's smile softened, his protective instincts kicking in. He reached out, his hand warm against Liam's cold one. “I’m here, okay? Nothing’s going to hurt you.”
Liam didn’t respond, but his heart gave a little skip at the reassurance. Theo was always so calm, so confident, like nothing could touch him. And Liam, well… he wasn’t like that. He was scared. He always had been.
Together, they pushed the creaking iron gate open, its groan echoing through the silent night. The front door of the mansion stood ajar, as if inviting them in.
Inside, the air was heavy, suffused with an eerie, musty scent. The walls were lined with faded portraits whose eyes seemed to follow their every move. The floorboards groaned under their footsteps, and every shadow felt alive.
Liam’s breath hitched. “Theo… I don’t know if I can do this.”
Theo squeezed his hand tighter, his thumb brushing over the back of Liam’s hand in slow, soothing strokes. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. But I’m not going anywhere without you.”
Liam looked up, his breath catching at the intensity in Theo’s gaze. For a moment, it was just the two of them—nothing else mattered.
But then a whisper echoed through the hallway, a voice low and broken, like the wind sighing through cracked windows. "Leave... now..."
Liam froze, the blood draining from his face. “Did you hear that?”
Theo’s expression darkened, a protective glint flashing in his eyes. “Yeah. We’re not leaving.”
Liam took a step back, his heart racing. “Theo… I—I’m scared. What if it’s real?”
Theo pulled him closer, his arm wrapping around Liam’s waist, grounding him. “It’s real, Liam. But so are we. And I’m not letting anything happen to you.”
But just as he said that, the temperature dropped drastically. Liam’s breath came out in visible clouds as a gust of wind swept through the room, slamming a door shut with a deafening bang.
From the corner of his eye, Liam caught a glimpse of a shadow moving, shifting unnaturally. He gasped, clutching onto Theo tighter.
“I don’t like this,” Liam whispered, voice trembling.
Theo didn’t let go. In fact, he pulled Liam even closer, his chest against Liam’s back, as if trying to shield him from the darkness around them. “I know. Me neither. But we’re in this together.”
Another whisper. This time, louder, almost desperate. “Help us…”
Liam’s heart pounded in his ears. “Theo, we need to go. This isn’t just some prank, this is real. We need to—”
“No,” Theo cut him off firmly, holding him steady. “We’re not leaving until we figure out what’s going on here. No one’s going to hurt you. Not while I’m here.”
Before Liam could protest further, the shadows in the hallway seemed to shift, swirling and coiling into a ghostly figure. It was translucent, pale, its hollow eyes fixed directly on them.
Liam stumbled back, his pulse racing. “Theo, please…”
Theo didn’t flinch. He stepped forward, positioning himself between Liam and the ghost. “You need to leave,” he said, voice steady but commanding.
The ghost’s form wavered, as though uncertain. For a long, silent moment, the room was still, save for the oppressive feeling of the house around them.
Then, as if sensing something in Theo’s unyielding stance, the spirit began to dissipate, retreating into the shadows from which it had emerged. The whispers faded too, leaving only the heavy silence that followed.
Theo turned to Liam, who was still shaking, his face pale. Without a word, Theo pulled him into an embrace, cradling him close as Liam clung to him desperately.
“I’m sorry,” Liam whispered, his voice breaking. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I just… I got so scared.”
Theo ran his fingers through Liam’s hair, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. “Hey. There’s nothing wrong with you. I’m just glad you’re okay. We got through it together, right?”
Liam nodded against his chest, feeling the weight of the fear slowly lift, replaced by the warmth of Theo’s protective embrace.
“Yeah,” Liam murmured, his breath finally steadying. “Together.”
The two of them stood there for a moment longer, hearts beating in sync. Despite the lingering chill of the haunted house, it felt like the world was just a little bit safer, as long as they had each other.
And with that thought, they left the house behind, the door creaking shut one last time as the whispers faded into the night
The air was thick as they stepped out of the mansion, but the unsettling weight didn’t lift. The fog had thickened, swirling around their feet like some invisible hand was trying to pull them back inside.
“We should’ve left,” Liam muttered, his voice still shaking. His grip on Theo’s hand was tight, but he couldn’t help it. Everything felt wrong.
Theo squeezed his hand in return, though his eyes flickered toward the forest that loomed just beyond the mansion. The woods, dense with trees and shadows, looked almost alive, like they were waiting. Watching.
“We’re almost there,” Theo said, trying to steady his breath. “Just a little further.”
But as they walked, the path seemed to stretch endlessly, twisting in ways that didn’t make sense. The trees grew taller and thicker, and the oppressive silence of the haunted house followed them like a dark cloud.
Then, the whispers returned. This time, they were louder, closer, almost suffocating.
“Leave... Leave now…”
Liam’s pulse spiked again, and his footsteps faltered. His instincts screamed at him to turn around, to run.
"Theo," he breathed, voice barely audible, "something’s wrong. We’re not alone."
Theo looked over at him, his brows furrowed in confusion. But the moment he saw the terror in Liam’s eyes, he spun around, suddenly alert. And that’s when they heard it—the sound of footsteps behind them. Fast. Ragged. Unnaturally fast.
A cold, hollow laugh echoed in the fog.
Liam’s blood ran cold. “Theo… it’s not just ghosts. We’re being—"
Before he could finish, something—or someone—lunged from the trees, moving like a blur of shadows. Theo’s eyes widened. He barely had time to react before a force collided with him, knocking him off balance.
Liam screamed, but the sound was swallowed by the thick woods around them. He barely had a moment to think before Theo pulled himself to his feet, shoving Liam behind him, his back to the unseen danger.
“Run, Liam!” Theo shouted, his voice sharp.
Liam hesitated, his eyes darting around. His heart pounded so loudly it was all he could hear, drowning out everything else.
“I can’t—” Liam gasped.
But Theo’s hand shot out, gripping his shoulder, his eyes burning with determination. “
You have to.
Now, Liam!”
Without waiting for another word, Theo spun and grabbed Liam’s hand, pulling him into a mad dash toward the edge of the woods. The forest seemed to shift around them, the trees closing in like a maze, but Theo’s focus never wavered. He pushed forward, knowing they couldn’t stop.
The sounds of footsteps grew louder, closer. Chasing. It was like they were surrounded by them, coming from every direction—feet on the ground, whispers in the trees, the cracking of branches behind them.
Liam’s breath came in ragged gasps, his legs burning as he tried to keep up. But every time he looked over his shoulder, the shadows seemed to get closer. The ghosts weren’t just watching anymore. They were hunting them.
“Don’t look back,” Theo said, his voice strained as he pulled Liam faster. “Keep running. Focus on me.”
Liam nodded, tears streaming down his face, but he kept his eyes on Theo’s back. The one person who had never let him down, even now, as the world around them seemed to unravel.
Theo’s hand tightened around his, the warmth of it grounding Liam, even as the darkness around them pressed in.
“
They’re not real,
” Theo said fiercely, his jaw set. But his voice wavered, just enough for Liam to catch the fear beneath the bravado. “
We’re going to make it out. Just trust me.
”
But Liam could feel the chill creeping into his bones, his legs growing heavier with every step. He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think—he just had to run.
And then, a shriek split the air, piercing and unnatural. A shadow lunged out of the darkness, its form twisted and grotesque. It was a woman—no, something
pretending
to be a woman—its eyes hollow and endless, its mouth stretched wide in a scream.
Liam froze, his heart nearly stopping in his chest.
“Liam!” Theo’s voice cut through the fear, and before Liam could fully process what was happening, Theo yanked him away, pulling him into a sharp turn. They veered off the path, toward the underbrush, dodging branches and thick foliage.
But the thing was right behind them now, its long fingers reaching toward Liam. The sound of its breath—sickly and heavy—was too close. Too close.
Theo turned on his heel and, without warning, shoved Liam toward a large boulder, his voice low and desperate. “Hide. Now.”
Liam barely had time to react. He scrambled behind the rock, his breathing erratic, his mind racing. He could hear Theo’s footsteps, but they were slowing. The ghost was getting closer.
“No, no, no…” Liam whispered to himself, a cold sweat running down his back.
Suddenly, there was a crashing sound, followed by Theo’s voice—quiet but steady—calling out to the ghost. “Leave him alone!
You want me, not him!
”
Liam’s heart stopped.
His mind was screaming at him to do something, anything, but he couldn’t move. He couldn’t think past the fear.
And then, he heard Theo. His voice was strained, but still steady, like he was facing down a monster, holding it off with nothing but willpower. “You’re not getting him.”
Liam’s chest tightened as he peeked around the rock. He could see Theo, standing strong but trembling, the figure of the ghost looming dangerously close, the creature’s unnatural presence like a black hole, pulling in all light around it.
Without thinking, Liam rushed forward, adrenaline flooding his body. He didn’t care about the consequences. He wasn’t going to let this thing take Theo.
“I’m not leaving you!” Liam shouted as he ran toward the shadow, grabbing Theo’s hand in a fierce grip.
The moment their fingers touched, there was a flash of light—bright, blinding. The ghost screamed, its form flickering like a dying flame, and with one final, agonized shriek, it vanished into the night, leaving only the oppressive silence in its wake.
Theo’s knees buckled as the weight of it all seemed to hit him at once, and Liam caught him before he could fall.
“You—You okay?” Liam whispered, his breath shaky, heart still racing.
Theo looked up, his face pale but his eyes soft. He nodded slowly. “I will be. As long as you’re safe. Always.”
Liam squeezed his hand. “I’m never leaving you again.”
And as they stood together, the mist around them slowly began to clear, the shadows retreating into the woods, as though the forest itself was giving them a moment of peace.
Theo pulled him closer, his forehead resting against Liam’s. “Together,” he murmured.
And for the first time that night, Liam allowed himself to believe it. No ghosts. No shadows. Just the two of them, making it out alive.
