----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
My ears were ringing as I collapsed to the ground. No, Gods it had happened again. I saw my sister standing over me, nothing more than a blur. The taste of blood filling my mouth, my mind numbed and still. My head was pounding, with what little conscience I had I registered that she was saying something. I saw my parents in the distance, their gaze shifting, looking for me. Spotting me, I watched as they ran over, Gods my head was spinning. Everything around me turned in to nothing more than a haze of color as my eye lids grew heavy.
My body ached, every inch of it. I opened my eyes, squinting as I adjusted to the bright room. My whole body throbbing in pain, the length of my back felt like I had been dragged by my arms against jagged sharp rocks. I tried to speak, but my voice was rasp and hoarse. I could only manage to utter a small sound. I was dehydrated. I shifted my head, searching the room for something that could ease my dry throat. There was a water pitcher on the bedside table, on top of it a glass covering the opening to prevent dust from littering the water. As I tried to reach for the pitcher I felt something tug at my arm, I panicked jolting in the bed. This only caused me more pain, increasing my awareness of my injuries. My mind was racing, I was still disoriented, tired, in pain. I shut my eyes for a minute and tried taking deep breaths.Fear flooded through my body as I realized what was happening. I was being held here, I rattled my arms for another hint. Chains. I was chained to the bed. The memories of the previous night flooded back to me, like someone had broken a dam in my mind. The door nob rattled, I was scared for who I would have to face. I saw dark brown hair cascading in, her small frame pushing the door shut. I recognized her almost immediately, my eyes shone with the comfort of seeing a familiar face.“Mom?” I weakly breathed, tears now streaming down my face.“Serena” Her voice wasn’t filled with relief, it was something different. She was scared, not of me. She was crying.“Mom, please, take these chains off. They hurt. Please, mom” I begged and pleaded, my throat burning with pain as I tried to shout for help. Her face changed to pure sympathy “Oh Serena, I can’t” Her voice filled with pain as she walked over to hug me. Her warmth hitting me like a wave of sunlight. She cupped my face gently, tears still flowing. “It’s not up to me” I shifted back ever so slightly. This was it, I had truly taken it one step to far. I had been circling the fall, I finally stumbled in. ~a few days earlier~I steadied my hand holding the shaft of the rose firmly, doing my best to avoid getting punctured.
I brought the trimmers up to eye level with the delicate flower, ready to clip this one and add it to the pile. I winced in pain, feeling a sharp string pierce my arm. "Shit" I lifted my elbow to get a better look at it, a green thorn, lodged deep in my flesh. A red circle forming on my skin, still pale from the winter. "Looks like you got your first battle scar" My sister teased in an attempt to uplift my mood. "Seriously? This feels more like a punishment than bonding time with my sister" I complained, still cradling my elbow, a small red bump now swelling from the flowers poison. My sister turned to face me, her cheeks a flushed shade matching her dress. "Someone has to do it, although I'm sure you wouldn't mind the gardens looking like a sad lazy mess" I was impartial to how the gardens looked, but knowing how much it meant to Lina I tried to assist as much as I could. I sighed, trying to focus on the task at hand. My sister demeanor turned grim. "What is it?" I asked tightening my grip around the delicate flower. "Serena...." Her tone quieter now, almost hesitant. My fingertips tingled as a chill made its way up my spine, I felt the sensation of the petals in my hand begin to wilt. My chest tightened as the petals shriveled. "Fuck" I muttered, watching as the petals drifted to the ground, losing their vibrancy. Day after day another reminder of a legacy I carry, further feeling the weight of the powers I inherited from my father, from the god Hellas. She rushed over noticing my discomfort. "Are you okay?" Her voice sincere. I didn't answer right away, too busy brushing the wilted petals away, a sigh escaped my lips. My powers always found a way to catch up with me. "Why don't you go get cleaned up, I can take it from here" My sisters hand rested on my shoulder, a warm smile across her face. I found some relief in the fact that it was me who inherited these powers and not her. I nodded, uttering my next words without thinking "How is it that you're so much stronger than your older sister, you find so much solace in simple things" I made my way towards the corridor giving her space without realizing the weight of my words. A stifled laugh came from her direction "Is that truly what you think? What that I have the heavier burden because I wasn't born with powers given by gods? That my interests are simple?" I couldn't find words that would ease the tension. I had already misspoke causing enough damage. I turned towards her "You know that's not what I meant"- The assertiveness in my voice hitting her like a brick. The air hung heavy between us. "But I guess I'll be going, I'll give you room the control your gardens" My words stung like the thorns lining the rows of rose bushes. I saw an unfamiliar shift in her gaze. "At least I have control over something" She muttered as she began ruthlessly ripping the weeds surrounding her precious flowers. Her words piercing me as I tried to keep my head held high. I made my way through the halls of Perranth, The stone walls cold and unforgiving. Vines growing around all it's corners, representative of it's true age. My room was no exception to the beauty of Perranth, a multi-level chamber with columns lined at the entrance. Stained glass murals lining the walls, the colors seeping through and dancing in the expanse of the room. It felt alive.I cleared a path towards the bathing room kicking clothes out of the way so that I might maneuver around them without tripping. The water filled the tub as I allowed myself to sink into my thoughts, staring at the reflection in the mirror, there was blood dripping from where the thorn jabbed me. It was only a matter of minutes before I heard a knock at the door, quickly making my way back to the main chamber moving with haste I opened the door to see my sister, her face and palms covered in dirt, a gash across her cheek. She sharply inhaled as if she were going to speak but nothing came out. "Is the garden life not treating you well" I teased, my arms crossed in a defensive position. If she was agitated, it didn't show on her face "I'm leaving early for Orynth, I was simply wondering if you had a letter you would like me to give to Evalin" He eyes lingered across my room, doing everything in their power to avoid my face. "Oh, It should be in here somewhere" She made her way into my room, watching me search for the letter in a conglomerate of junk on my desk. I thought it would be best to somewhat mend what had been said between us before she left. "Any reason for the rush to get to Orynth?" I questioned, scanning her face for a hint of excitement. My hands still deep in the pile of papers as I searched for the letter. Her body shifted, now leaning on the post of my bed. "Not any particular reason, I just would like to spend more time enjoying Orynth, our visits always feel so breif" Her body told a different story than her words. "I see-" My eyebrows raised. "I guess it's nice to appreciate the natural landscape, take it in, enjoy it. Especially the hills behind the courtyard" I stopped to look at her for a minute, to see if she would take this as an opportunity to be vulnerable, or to hold onto animosity. Ignoring my prior statement she simply stepped in to assist me in finding the letter. "Is this it?" She held up a beige letter sealed with a gold wax stamp with our houses sigil on it. I felt a rush of relief as she held it up. "Thank gods, I never thought I’d see this again” We stood there for a minute before Lina broke the silence. She made her way towards the door, her hand resting on the nob. "I'll see you soon" She began opening the door. "Give my regards to Adrian, that is if your not too busy with him" I stood there with my arms crossed, a grin across my face. She froze for a minute before making her way out. The one thing I could truly credit her with was her discretion. I stood for a few minutes before behind reminded of my current state, I was still covered in the filth from the gardens. ~~~~~~The next morning I woke up with a heavy heart, my sisters words still lingering like a weight on my chest. She had left before dusk so there was no point it trying to fix what is in the past. I fastened the clasps of my leathers securing the clothes to my body, grabbing my bow with it. I made my way to the archery range, a hidden spot in the east wing of the castle. An open roof covered by the greenery of the surrounding areas. The walls of stone laced with ivy, latching onto each stone sprawling all the way up to the roof. Closed off from everything, but still allowing the natural aspects of perranth to seep in.My cheek brushed against the arrow as the tips of my fingers released it, the light of dawn peeping through the cracks of the stone, illuminating my skin. I sensed something approaching and spun around with my bow to find my fathers face mere inches away from having one of my arrows through his head. "Are you trying to piss off everyone in this family?"He gently pushed it aside, his face expressions unreadable. Reading the distress on my face realizing that he may not have read the room properly he leaned against the stone. His tone softened but I could still feel the anger in his voice. We took a seat on the steps."She was only trying to help you" He said, this time concern written across his face.I shifted away from him slightly, trying to hide my guilt"I know" I said with my arms crossed, my chest tightened with the weight of what I had said. "Do you? Do you know how to accept help?" His words were blunt, but it was what I had needed to hear. "I try to be, but I don't find comfort in the same things as her" My mind flashed with the images of how hurt she had looked. "I really didn't mean what I had said" I sighed “About her hobbies being simple”, The implication of what I had said hit me. I looked up to read his expression. He put his arm around me pulling me into a side hug. My head now resting on hid shoulder."I know, but it's not about what your comfortable with. Sometimes change can be good" His words full of guidance, his voice steady. I looked up at him, a puzzled expression plastered across my face "But I just don’t want to risk anymore than I have to" Her words echoing in my mind, At least she have control of something. She was right. He let out a low laugh "I know, but something as simple as helping your sister in the gardens can help both of you" He sighed. I wasn't going to pretend I knew what he meant, so I took this as an opportunity to just relax in the familiar embrace that had brought me so much comfort throughout my childhood. I looked up with tears welling in my eyes. "A part of me feels relieved that I was burdened with these powers-" I stopped, unsure as to whether or not I had wanted to finish that sentence. "But?" He encouraged me. "But why would someone like me, someone with such little control, someone who is constantly harming others be given this. Why not someone like Angelina?" Someone too kind to hurt others. Someone who's only weapon was their words. His face shifted into confusion. "Someone like Angelina? Tell me, why do you think your sister acts so kindly towards those who are so undeserving of it?" His words sinking into my mind, taking in every aspect. He shifted back looking towards the arrows sticking through the target. "Sometimes people are only kind due to their inability to fight back" His words pulling everything together, allowing me to see what had been right in front of me. I had never gives myself the chance to wonder what kind of person my sister would have become if I she had been the one born with these powers."You on the other hand, you have power. Learn how to use it" He got up and made his way back up the steps towards the main corridors. He stilled for a minute. "And, please, accept help from those who care about you" I lowered my gaze as the weight of his words settled over me. I picked up my bow, continuing to train my aim.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Normally I would be up at the crack of dawn to continue my training, but today I enjoyed the rare privilege of letting the sun rise before me. As much as I embraced being the beloved heir of Terrasen, I equally welcomed the idea of staying in bed until noon. One day I would make a great ruler but for now, the only thing calling me was my pillow. I shifted on my side, comfortably letting my body sink into the mattress
Much to my dismay, mere seconds later there was knocking on my door. I shifted groggily, opening my eyes only to wince at the light. “Come in” I said. The bright framed door opened slightly to reveal a short servant girl. “Excuse the interruption princess, but we have been informed that Queen Sellene will be arriving today, in place of tomorrow”She bowed slightly.”Would you like assistance getting ready?”She questioned, keeping her head down. “No I’ll be alright, thank you”I smiled as she exited the room. Great, what I had assumed would be a day of rest and relaxation was now going to be filled with diplomacy and dull conversation.I should have been exited, I was about to be honored, and officially declared as the heir to my Kingdom in front of everyone and anyone important.
But truly, I was just happy that I would get to see all my family and friends. It brought some comfort knowing that those I love will be there to watch me pledge allegiance to my kingdom, Aunt Lysandra, Uncle Aedion, Uncle Lorcan, Aunt Elide, Mannon, Dorian, There are so many that I've lost count. Even Fenrys, he had been in Wendlyn for the past years as Terrassens emissary. The handsome wolf would be making his way home across the great ocean.I heard yet another knock on the door and saw a letter slide under the door. As expected it was a letter from Serena. I made my way towards the door hastily snatching it off the ground, and tearing it open.~Letter~
Dear Evalin,
first and foremost!
Happy birthday to my amazing and beautiful best friend! How insane is it that you are the future queen which is a close second to getting to be friends with me. But seriously, don't assume I forgot that promise you made me when we were 7, that I would be hand to the queen. I will even swear an oath from abstaining from being high rusk. I wish that the distance between us would close already but I guess you will have to wait. I hope you have one of the best weeks in your immortal life that I can't wait to spend with you!
Love,
Serena Lochan SalvaterreI thought about what she wrote.
high risk.
After what happened last year I'm not too surprised that she would be put under more strict protocols. It was devastating for everyone, and I'm had no doubt that her parents were willing to ensure that it would never happen again. I know that all they wanted to do was protect her but they could be a bit much. Although I would never dare say that to Lorcan and Elides faces.I got up from my seat and was quickly followed by Fleetfoot. His tail wagging, a bright glow on his golden face.
As I reached for my boots I mentally prepared for what was to come. I found that my mother had laid out a light green dress with gold trim, and left a note informing me about how sorry she was for the short notice. Meaning she must not have known Sellene was arriving any sooner than I did. I headed towards the main quarters of the palace with the sound of Fleetfoots patter following at my heels.~~~~~~~~"Happy birthday my beautiful girl" My mother gleamed at me as she pulled me in. Her warmth hitting me like a wave as the light cascaded into the room."Happy birthday Evalin" I heard my dad say as he stepped into sight, joining in on the embrace."I can't believe it" I was still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I was truly 18 years of age."You can let go now" I laughed nervously."Oh but I don't want to, I’m not ready to" I blushed at what she said. Although I didn’t think I was ready either."Mom" I said playfully, a hint of sadness in my tone as I pulled away from the hug."I know, I know, I should embrace the fact that my daughter has turned into a stunning and wonderful young woman. One who is sure to find all kinds of amazing things in her future" She put both hands on my shoulders, her smile still bright as she looked at me with those Ashryver ryes. The eyes that I had not inherited.I was in a rather playful mood this morning"Oh yeah like what?" I teased."Like learning more about your powers, meeting new people, maybe even meeting someone" She said, that last part causing my father to flash her a panicked look. She pulled away to look at him. "Although I probably shouldn't joke like that in-front of your father, I'm not exactly sure he's ready to hear that" His tensed expression eased slightly upon hearing this, but the overprotectiveness still loomed over the room."We should get going, we have roughly 17 guests to welcome to the palace, that now includes the kingdom of Doranelle" This was what I loved about my role, I was a true diplomat at heart. Pride loomed over me as I imagined ruling Terresan, the kingdom I have loved since I was a small child.
"Your fathers cousin Sellene will not be pleased if she does not have the best royal welcome" My mother stated in a hushed tone. Of course, the Fae queen in the east expected nothing less than golden trumpets and a proper royal welcome.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Serenas pov*The Journey to Orynth was beautiful but fleeting. I was always disappointed when we would reach our final destination. I preferred the silent path filled with comfort, where I was provided the privilege of being alone with my thoughts. Even if they pained me, it brought me much comfort knowing that I was the one carrying this weight opposed to my siblings. I was the one who had to live with this weight upon my shoulders, and no matter how troubled I felt I took some satisfaction in the fact that those who I care about are safe."Serena? Are you alright?" I looked to my right to see my fathers worried expression."Yes, just exited for the celebrations" I faked a smile, even though I knew that he would see through it."Well, it looks like you’re still terrible at lying" He glared at me, waiting for my real answer. I didn’t want to burden my family with my powers."No I'm fine, I'll be okay" I reassured him and went back to watching the reflection of the pine trees glisten on the lakes crystalline surface. A lake that I had spent many childhoods swimming in. I inhaled the cool breeze, and it was as if I could feel the memories rushing through my brain, giving me a rush of serenity."We- Me and your mother, we're worried about you, we're all worried about you. You're too hard on yourself" He further pressed the issue even knowing that there was a small chance of me having another display of vulnerability. But he continued knowing that if I did not willingly display my emotions, he would be able to frustrate me into opening up."I'm fine, please just trust me when I say that, and I am NOT too hard on myself, if anything I lack discipline" My gaze hardened as I lowered my head."We both know that's not true, you put too much pressure on yourself. Just promise me one thing, okay?" He pleaded with me. I waited a minute before answering."Fine" I said sternly."Take this time in Orynth to relax, just, don’t spend the whole trip stressing yourself out" He said in a commanding tone, but I could hear some desperation in his voice. A rare suite for Lorcan Salvaterre, demi-fae warrior. But not uncommon for Lord Lorcan Lochan, father and husband."What so I can make a fool of myself again? So I can hurt other people? I am finally starting to gain some control, and besides I'm immortal, I have an eternity to have fun"I said confidently, the thought that this statement would frustrate him had completely slipped my mind. Me wanting to settle was always a sore subject for my parents."Serena why can't you just listen" I was by his raised voice. Even my brother, caught off guard, looking over to see how I could've angered someone who excels at controlling his temper."Yes, you have an eternity, but your life isn’t the same after you settle. Trust me, I would know. And you’re still a child" His tone was cold and unforgiving. This only frustrated me further "I don't understand why you don't think I can’t have fun and enjoy the company of my friends after I settle, and I am definitely not a child" I'm the heir of Perranth, I thought as I stupidly argued my point, arms crossed and stubborn unwilling as ever. All I got in response was a deep laugh at my words. His demeanor changed quickly "Settling isn’t just the choice to stop physically aging, it heightens your senses, increases your power, and changes how you act, and if you’re not ready for that it will not go well” I knew what he meant, If I wasn’t ready for more power, if my new and heightened abilities would be too much for me.He started again "It changes your senses, your priorities, the way you think, the way you process things. We've talked about this, and I don't want to hear anything more about settling, you are way too young to settle" He didn't explicitly say end of discussion but I took the hint that I should probably stop talking."And just to set the record straight, you are most definitely still a child." I couldn't peer into their minds but I'm sure that my parents still saw me as my defenseless 7 year old self picking flowers in the field with my siblings. It was even worse when I began talking to boys. Oh gods, I couldn’t even talk to boys without one of them sneaking up behind me, or my brother mercilessly teasing me in front of them. Boys tended to leave quickly when they hear that one of your parents has powers of so called death. Whatever that means. No matter how many times my parents explained it to me I never felt repelled from the idea of settling early. I made an agreement with them that I would wait until I was at-least 23 to settle, but I didn't think I would be able to wait 6 more years. My parents and their friend group, if you could call it that, came up with this resolution in order to ensure that their children could take the time to enjoy their life. Unlike many of them who were thrown into war and leadership positions by the age of 18.Evalins Pov*I sat patiently, maintaining my formal composure trying to distract my mind from how hectic everything has been. I nodded my head as a strained my attention span in an attempt to listen to Sellene had to say. As much as I would have loved to be spending time with my siblings I knew the importance of greeting my guests, especially when this guest happened to be a close relative, and the queen of Doranelle, one of our prominent allies."So Evalin, would you happen have anyone in mind" Sellene questioned with her brow arched, matching her already sharp and strong features."Oh, I’m sorry, I have been rather distracted lately. Could you repeat that?" I earned a proud look from my mother, where she expressed how well I maneuvered that situation. lSellenes back straightened "Of course, no worries, I too remember how hectic the preparations for me taking Doranelles throne were" I nodded gracefully in response as she took a sip of her tea, tapping the rim twice with her delicate finger signaling for a refil."I have found an opening in my court, one of my ladies in waiting has recently been married, much to my dismay I do believe she could have done better but there was not much I could do. I was simply curious, a girl of your age must have some close confidents who you believe to be worthy of filling this position" Her lips curled upwards as she uncrossed her legs and straightened her posture. I couldn't understand why she was so eager to fill a job of such small importance in the grand scheme of things.I scanned my mind for anyone who I could picture sitting around all day, wearing pretty dresses, and entertaining the court. She scanned my face for an answer."Well I don't believe anyone comes to my mind at this moment, although I do prefer to keep my circle small and friends close so my judgement could possibly be clouded for selfish reasons" I stated calmly. Her head inclined "Yes well, it's a smarter move for a girl in your position to keep a small group of loyal and trusted confidents, and I respect that so there will be no hard feelings if you do not supply me with a name" She said, graceful and perfect as ever. I truly looked up to her as a leader, she was strong, calculated, and proud. The door suddenly creaked open as a palace guard stepped foot in the room."Apologies for the interruption" He said my bowing twice, once to me and my parents, and a second time for Sellene. The Fae in Terrasen have grown to hold quite a bit of respect for Sellene considering her help in the war, and her close relation to the king consort. He continued his announcement."The Lady and Lord of Perranth have arrived, along with their children" He kept his eyes down, and chin up. I tried to contain my excitement for the sake of having manners for our current guest, but my attempts to conceal it were ill attempted with Sellene seeing right through it."Well I must consult with some of my advisors on how long we will be staying after the ceremony" She paced herself has she stood, her silver hair falling into place."Aelin, it's always an honor to meet with another queen" She said bowing her head, and taking my mothers right hand into both of hers."And you, I guess it's not all too unpleasant to occasionally see my cousin" She said patting Rowan on the shoulder as they both shared a laugh that sounded like an exchange between two old friends. I followed a small distance behind my parents as they made their way out."It was a pleasure speaking with you" I curtsied. but as I attempted to walk away, I felt Sellene pull my arm, causing to to jolt almost losing my balance. my parents had already left the room but the gaurds present tensed. I gave them a look to stand down."Evalin, I didn't mean to frighten you just now, but perhaps I did not properly explain the role I was trying to fill in my court" Her sharp green eyes peering deep into mine looking for a hint of curiosity."Sorry, but I'm not sure what you could've been more clear on" She needed a lady in waiting, and I didn't have name in mind."What is it that you think the Ladies in Waiting of Doranelle do?" She questioned with a hint of whimsy in her voice, a playful side to her the I had never seen. That she had never bothered to show me."Dress well, entertain their queen, attend balls, participate in the arts" I could have kept listing menial activities but was cut off."See this, this is where you're mistaken. Ladies of Doranelle are so much more than that. They have a certain skill set that is highly valued" She looked at me for a signal as to whether or not the should continue."Go on" I leaned and slightly raised my eyebrows with curious. She caught my attention, and I was hungry for more."Let's just say my ladies receive similar training to those of military personnel or so called mercenaries" She began her swift exit but paused and turned to face me."If you need more information I'm sure that the palace library will have an ample supply of information" She gracefully made her way out of the room with her hair gleaming down her back. "If the library does not serve you well, ask your father. After all he did live there for a considerable deal of his life" I sat there contemplating her words, my mind racing with ideas of what her ladies were capable of.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Serenas pov*The glimmering gates of Orynths palance opened to reaveal…. no one. It was odd that we weren't greeted by Aelin and Rowan but I tried not to think much of it. I couldn't image the stress they had been under with preparations and hosting.I shifted towards my parents. "Dad? Where are aunt Aelin and uncle Rowan? Don't they normally greet us at the gates when we come to visit" I felt a chill run up my spine as a scanned the steps of the palance."Yes sweetie they usually do, but please remember that at this celebration they will not be Aunt and Uncle, but your king and queen" He gently reminded me."Don't think too much about it sweetheart, I'm sure they're just busy, and consumed with everything" My mother smiled cupping my face.My brother leaned in over my shoulder to "I'm sure someones keeping Lina buisy" He teased as we both began trying to stifle our laughter, not wanting to draw to much attention. Our attempts at Discretion once again unsuccessful as we earned a disapproving look from our father."Would you like to repeat what you just said, and let me know whether or not I need to take a child off of Aedion and Lysandras hands" He said sternly, his body shifting in a defensive manner. My brother demeanor changed quickly from playful to stiff."Lorcan, relax. Let her have fun, it's like you don't remember how we acted at their age" My mom teased putting her arms around him."You mean when they were your age. If I remember correctly, we weren't exactly the same age when we met. With me being in triple digits and all that" My father said, leaning in to kiss her. To mine and my brother relief someone had the courage to interrupt at what seemed to be the perfect time. A man dressed finely in Doranelles military uniform walked down the steps. His hair an ethereal shade of silver, and his skin tanned, further accentuating his defined arms, visible even through his uniform."Apologies for the interruption but-" The guard was caught off guard by my what was loud and frustrated exhale from my father that sounded as if he wanted to snap his neck. He flashed a flirtatious smile my direction, which I did not reciprocate."Go on" My mother said, trying to remedy his unease, offering her usual warm smile, still holding my fathers hands in hers."The king and queen send their regards, but are currently meeting with my queen, Sellene of Doranelle" He was spoke with a certain steadiness, as he stared at me with his his captivating dark blue eyes. It's as if he was searching for something, finally having found it."If I may I was assigned to escort you to your rooms" He stood ready for our response."Oh that won't be necessary, we are completely capable of finding our way. We've stayed her plenty of times" I attempted to walk past him. He gently rested his calloused hand on my shoulder stilling me.He moved in, steadying himself. I sensed my father tense, and my mother ready to defend me at any minute."If I may suggest, it would be in both of our best interests if you were to walk with me as I have been assigned to you for security purposes" His voice was warm and promising, but a part of me still felt deceit in his tone."Very well then, we should get going considering we are already somewhat late" I moved passed him, purposely allowing my shoulder to brush against his.I followed closely, staying just a few paces behind him. Not out of obedience, but curiosity. I wanted to know more, know him. We made our way through the vast halls of the palace which never failed to mesmorize me. The arches that overlooked Orynths landscape allowed the sound of the trees rustling to travel beyond the gates. Orynth in all it's splendor never failed to bring me peace. The palace was designed in a way that it felt one with nature, when you sit in one of the hundreds of rooms it feels like you are in the depths of Terrasens forests, and you could only wander deeper and deeper in. We reached the top of the main steps, the walk had been completely silent up until this point."Serena, we'll see you soon Sweetheart, take care of your brother. And for your sake, I would suggest to steer clear from 1000 year old relics" My mother, the fearless Lady of Perranth could only be stressed out by one thing, and that was her family."Don't worry, we'll be fine" I smiled at her in an attempt to put her mind at ease. I noticed the young man staring at me with deep intent. My father began to approach him, putting a hand on his shoulder."If any harm comes to by daughter, if anyone lays a finger on I'll know who to blame, understand?" He said dauntingly, intimidating the sharp tongued Fae into looking like nothing more than a mere child."Got it Lord Lochan" The Fae retaliated. I could see him stifling a laugh. Who did he think he was? I gave my parents the signal that I would be alright, begrudgingly I followed the male down the hall.As my parents made there way around the corner I felt my brother tap my shoulder. "Hey, S, I'm going to wander around a little" He gave a short smile before quickly disappearing. I never bothered asking my brother where he goes, it would result in him getting defensive only furthering my curiosity. I guess it was none of my business.I made my way to our quarters, me and my siblings always stayed in the rooms closest to all the other kids considering that they were like family. That was until I caught my sister on Adrians lap, his hand firmly on her ass, the other sitting in the curve of her waist, making out fervently with her top undone. She swore to me that it never went further than that but I made sure to give Adrian a fair warning, and cautioned her that she may get caught. There was only so much I could do to save her from the wrath that could unfold in the unlikely scenario that she got knocked up. It was no big secret that they were together amongst us teens and children of Erileas great rulers, but we all agreed to not talk off it too much with our parents to avoid unwanted tensions if someone perhaps wanted to end the relationship. This was to ensure that there was no parental pressure or unnecessary stress."So, I would say that went well with your parents" The young man snapped me out of my daze, I turned to face him, his eyes already searching me.His air of self importance filling the halls."Excuse me, I don't even know you, I don't even know your name. Meeting my parents is not some special significant thing between us" I said, my arms folded as I looked him up and down, taking him in. He was tall, and broad shouldered. Not slender like the boys my age who resided in Perranth."So your saying theres an us" His words reverberated through my spine, a hint of possessiveness in his voice. His eyes matched his uniform, both a rich and vibrant shade of blue. Not dark like the night, but deep, and hypnotic."No, theres not an us" I said playfully, a smirk growing on my lips as I looked him up and down. I decided that if I was apart of his game, I might as well act as the queen and not the pawn."But if there were to be an "us" I would need to know your name first" I said stopping in my tracks, and putting a finger on his chest, taping at a pulsing rythm. With every tap his body tensed ever so slightly. I put my finger up to my bottom lip, his eyes following my hand."But if you don't want to tell me for the sake of keeping body gaurd and lady relationships professional I comple-" I was quickly cut of as he faced me pushing my back against the wall, one of his tanned hands posted up next to my head. His hard gaze centering in on me, compelling me to stay put as I wanted his answer. A normal person might have found this to be too upfront, harsh, or maybe even aggressive, but in all honesty I understood that I had certain needs that had to be met.I assumed the boy was a wealthy young fae who must have been apart of a prominent family in Doranelle, but considering that he resided in the military he must have been a youngest son or at the very least the 3rd child. Certainly not close to inheriting anything. And so arrogant, but then again, so so beautiful."Andres" He exhaled closing the distance between us. I let my hand graze his shoulder, I traced the lining of his uniform with my fingertips toying with the embroidery. I let my hands travel up his chest, following his arm letting my fingers trace the stich patterns until I reached his hand still resting on my face. I grabbed onto his wrist further moving in."Well Andres, I hate to break it to you but"- I put my free hand on his jaw, caressing it, watching the way his pupils would dilate at my touch."But?" He moved his free hand to mine as it still rested on his jaw. His breathing heavy snd intense.-"But... this is my room. And I really should get going" I tried to move out from under him, not that I truly minded being there. I had been feeling rather unfulfilled lately."Aren't you going to invite me in" he moved my hand from his jaw, dropping it so that his arm hand could wrap around my waist. We both looked at eachother as he felt the curvature of my spine accentuate, causing a stupid smirk to form on his face. What was I doing, I didn't even know this male.I thought to myself,But then again, we all have needs."Well I guess that I wouldn't mind you sitting on my bed as I unpack" I pouted, moving my arms into a crossed position bringing more focus to my already well endowed chest, baiting him, seeing if he would look and fall into it. But no, not even a glance down. My ego was somewhat hurt, but I'm sure I'll live."Well then, what are we waiting for" He said about to open the door. My body shifted towards the far end of the corridor as the sound of footsteps grew closer and closer. As the sound emerged from the corner, long blonde waves entered my line of sight. It was Evalin."Serena!" She picked up the front of her dress, now picking up her pace as she made her way towards me. I gleamed at her walking out with open arms."Where have you been? What so I'm not important enough to greet anymore?" I no longer felt Andres' warmth next to me, but didn't think much of it."Oh you know, princess duties and all that. Come here I want a hug" She pulled me in somewhat aggressively. This had been the longest we had ever gone without seeing each other and I hoped it would never be longer than this. I felt her go still, she relaxed her grip on my a little. I thought that it would be appropriate to introduce her to my bodygaurd considering he would be around alot."Oh, Evalin, I have someone I would like you to meet. This is Andr-," I turned around with my hand out towards him, or atleast where I remember he stood. He was gone without a trace."Serena, listen. You're my bestfriend so I won't judge you. Have you been.... you know? Doing, or taking anything with certain adverse side effects?" She held my hands her hers, deep sincerity in her eyes. I began laughing earning a frustrated look from her."What? Doing drugs?" I was truly amused by how seriously she took it."Here, I'll explain later, but the answer is no" I put my arm around her shoulders, opening the door with my other hand."You're right, you must be exhausted. Let me help you unpack and we can talk about it then" She was anxious, I could tell. The stress of the preparations was getting to her. But there was something else, something foreign. A new underlying issue that she has not confided in me about yet.As we mad our way into my room I was hit with the warm sunlight, it heated my bare skin. I stood there for a minute enjoying it as Evalin layed sprawled out on my bed. I made my way to the wardrobe to begin unpacking, I froze at what I saw.A small blue note:Sorry for leaving so hastily.I'm supposed to keep a safe following distance, remember?Andres.I crumpled it into a ball and threw it across my room, I didn't see where it landed but if it was out of sight it was out of mind."What was that?" Evalin asked groggily. She must have been more tired than I was."Nothing, can we just relax for a minute? Do nothing?" I made my way over and layed down next to her. No answer."Evalin?" I looked over to see her passed out, gracefully sleeping. It was a matter of minutes before I was in an equally deep sleep. I felt like I was in some sort of deep hypnotic trance, but I brushed it off as the simple fact that sometimes all you truly needed was your friends presence, it didn't always have to be an adventure.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Serenas pov*It took us a matter of minutes within waking up to run to the archways at the front of the palace. The perfect view to spot arriving guests."Gods I can't wait to see everyone" Evalins gleamed a smile shimmering with excitement. Her golden hair flowing down the back of her light green dress, many shades lighter than her Whitethorn eyes."Should we take bets on who will arrive first? or who will arrive sober?" I elbowed her, grinning as she contemplated my offer."Tempting, but I think we already know the answer to the second question" She rolled her eyes turning her heads focus back towards the gates. Her face resting in her hands. The gates began to creep open, revealing the royal banners of Adarlan, following closely behind them were the banners of Caraverre, Aedion and Lysandra."Where's aunt manon?" My eyes searched the party for a hint of platinum hair. I felt a sudden breeze creep up behind me as abraxos' wings shot down in front of us, Manon on his back. A smile creeped across my face."I think that should answer your question" Evalin tugged on my arm "Come on, lets go greet everyone" I followed trying to keep up with her eager pace. My hair swayed gently against the leather clothes covering my back. We sprinted down the steps almost toppling more than a few times. The sun from the archways opening hit us as we caught a glimpse of everyone."Evalin, Serena!" Lyandra was the first to spot us. The others quickly turned to look at us, smiles shone in every direction. Me and Evalin went to our respective aunts, I was quickly enveloped in Manons embrace, her nails brushing up against me. I spotted Lysandra and Aedion embracing Evalin out of the corner of my eye. Gods it was still unsettling how alike Aedion and Aelin looked."Let me get a good look at you" She stepped back "How have you been girl" Manon places her hands on my shoulders assessing me. A sly look across her face."Good, I've been practicing some of the training moves you taught me" I smiled, letting my body relax."No ones giving you trouble, right?" She took her hand of my shoulder "If so, you would know who to ask" She flashed a smile as her sharp nails glimmered in the light."I'll keep that in mind" Even if she wasn't my family my blood, she was my Aunt in every way that counted. She saved my mother, and she would save me if I needed it.
“Any new developments into whether or not you would like to make me an honorary witch so that I might have a Wyvern of my own?“ I teased, I held a fond memory from my childhood of Aunt Manon gifting me a stuffed Wyvern, much to my parents dismay. But from that point on I had fallen in love with the beasts.
She took my hands in hers “You know you’re more than just an honorary witch already” Her words filled my heart with warmth, and a tinge of admiration for the certainty in her voice. Many of my childhood memories are filled with games in Adarlans palace from when my mom would bring me on her visits. She would of course say they were diplomatic and official, but I'm not sure just how diplomatic her and manon finishing an entire bottle of wine from the southern continent was.The spring breeze blew strands of my braid in front of my face. "Abraxos seems to have missed you" Dorian slunk out from the shadows, his mothers gaze sharpening on him, a look similar to, but not quite disappointment. His black hair disheveled from travels, with his sapphire eyes glittering, a reflection of his fathers."Abraxos? Is that the only one who missed me?" I teased him taking another step forward. All the other voices now distant noise, nothingness."No, Chiara seemed pretty exited to see you, she should be arriving soon, she chose to fly" My heart flipped at his words, I loved riding on Chiaras wyvern, gripping on for dear life as she steered us through Perranths mountains. She was the older sister I never had.
We stood their for what felt like decades, deeply assessing each-other. I felt gentle hands cover my eyes.
"Suprise" Arias soft voice captured my attention as she hugged me from behind. "I missed you stupid" She moved to face us, Evalin standing at her side. Silence fell over everyone as the excitement cooled down."Well I don't know about every one else, but I am absolutely starving" Dorians voice cut through the tension in the air like a knife."Agreed" Evalin said patting her stomach."Gods I feel famished" Aria said now in full swing, pulling the rest of us back towards the palace. It didn't take long for us to get pulled back into our rythm. Within a matter of minutes we were back to our usual ease. ~~~~ In front of me on the table laid an array of sweet and savory options, I took a few on my plate, pouring water in my glass to wash it down. Across from me Dorian poured two glasses, a mix of orange juice and sparking wine from Wendlyn. He passed it to me with a wink. I only nodded politely in response. I bit into a jam filled pastry, looking up to see Dorians gaze on me with a grin plastered on his face."What?" I said defensively."Nothing, you've just got a little something" Before I could react, he reached across the table, wiping the jam from the side of my lip, his finger catching on it softly. Evalins gaze shifted towards me, as Arias eyes settled on Dorian. Gods this was awkward."So, do either of you have a date for the ball?" I turned to question Aria and Evalin. They both stilled."I don't, I enjoy the freedom of multiple suitors while I party" Aria took a swig of her drink, trying to hide the blatant lie she presented us with.
"My parents-" She turned towards Dorian. "Our parents, deemed it appropriate for him to be my escort, considering the importance of the occasion" Her back straightened as a look of guilt flashed across Dorians face. Shit, that's why it had been so awkward.~~~~~~A few hours later*"Whats wrong, I know when somethings bothering you" My usually larger than life friend had been concerningly silent. Her head hung low, an unusual site for the proud girl."It's Nothing" Her brows raised, jerking her head towards me. "Is this about Dorians shameless flirting?" I stopped. "Because if so, I think it's important that you know I have absolutely zero romantic feelings for him" I said, my tone louder that anticipated."Feelings for who" The familiar voice lurched over me. I turned to see the silver hair of the male who's voice was like silk over my skin. Before I could speak, I heard Evalins voice of confusion "Andres? When did you arrive?" Gods, did she know him like I did? I could only pray that she didn't. To my suprised, and hopefully not to my dismay, she enveloped him in a gentle hug."Serena this is-" She attempted to introduce me to him."I'm well aware of who he his" I crossed my arms, my gaze examining him, this time more lightly in the afternoon sun."You know my cousin?" her cousin, gods. I should have known, silver hair, overly confident, arrogant, and from a prominent family in Doranelle. He must have been a relatively distant cousin."Well, you're cousin, happens to be my body gaurd" Amusement flashed across her face as she turned her head, looking between both of us. She stood there, jaw open."About that" He moved in, taking a step towards me. "Theres something we need to discuss, as to how closely I'll be following" His smile as charming as his demeanor. Before I could object, Evalin hastily turned "I'll leave you two alone" She smiled, now in a fast step the opposite of us."Who were you talking about earlier?" He questioned eagerly, a tinge of jealousy in his voice."Never mind that, what do we need to change. What about you guarding me from a safe distance isn't working?" my eyes gleamed with impatience as I stood, brown hair cascading down my shoulders. His eyes scanning me."Well I think it might be.... well safer" He fidgeted with the cuffs of his uniform."Safer?" I exhaled. "Really?" Gods it would take forever to get a straight answer from him. "Is that all?" I stiffened, my tone now harsher."Yes," He exclaimed. "well, most of it" His hands still toying with his uniform."You're impossible" I turned to walk away, following Evalins distant path. I felt him pull at my wrist spinning me to face him. For a minute he just stood there, eyes gleaming."Fine, I guess you are entitled to knowing" He glanced in all directions, scanning for prying eyes and ears. "I overheard my cousin speak of you on her last trip to Doranelle, so I may have stolen this job in order to get close enough to ask you to be my date to the ball" I stood there stunned at not only is bluntness, but his vulnerability. Something untrusting wavered in my eyes, not going unnoticed by him.”So you stalked me?” My voice unwavering, and leaning little room for argument. ”What? No. It wasn’t like that” The panic in his voice now evident.
"Why should I go with you?" I awaited in answer, arms still crossed in the cold corridor."Because it is customary to have a date" He argued. His arms now crossed on his chest, rising and sinking with every breath of anticipation. "Old customs, customs that hold little weight here if you are not hosting" Gods why would I go with him?"I've heard you're a rather excellent dancer" I hadn't Danced since that night in Adarlan. My heart sunk thinking about that dark time in my life. Distress flashed across my face. His tone shifted "and I want to take you to the ball as my date because you intrigue me" He took another step forward, awaiting my response. His gaze softened.I stilled for a moment, allowing my self to control my breathing "I'll considering it" was the only answer I could settle on for now. Gods today could not be any more stressful."Consider what" I heard a low voice from the right end of the hall, causing me to take a step back. I hadn't realized how close we had been. When I turned I was faced with my father walking down the hall with Rowan at his side.I searched my mind for a response "Oh, nothing, we're just talking about plans to suprise Evalin with" The lie slid off my tongue with unnatural ease. As if I were speaking nothing but the truth. Andres shot me a look of relief as his shoulders relaxed."Really because my fae hearing picked up on a little more than that" Rowan said, knowing the chaos he was trying to invoke. I shot him a look of disapproval that was only received with a grin.I didn't know what to say. "Okay, fine." What could I even say to that? Yeah I think your cousin is incredibly hot and I'd like to do more with him that just dance. Everything was still, Rowans voice cut through the silence."Do either of you know where Evalin is? We still have a few official matters to discuss" He questioned, an attempt to change the subject. Before I could answer Andres took a step forward. "Yes we're actually supposed to be meeting her in the gardens, so we should probably be on our way" He attempted to turn around but was stilled by Rowans firm grip on his shoulder."You and I, have other things to discuss" They made their way down the empty corridor, Rowan practically dragging him on his heels leaning only me and my fathers disapproving glare."Did you know that was Evalins cousin?" I questioned, slicing through the tension in the air."Yes, I did. Why does it matter?" He said in his usual unreadable expression. His voice unwavering."It doesn't" I replied much to quickly. Fuck. "I was just curious, why didn't you mention it earlier?" I still barely knew anything about him."It didn't seem very important for you to know those things about your guard, since that's all he is, right?" My face turned a subtle, and barely noticeable shade of red."Well, now that you mention it, it would be rather nice to have a date to the ball" I said knowing nothing good would come from this statement."You are not, going with him" I was taken aback by the harshness of his statement. Why shouldn’t I be able to choose my own date?"Well I wasn't originally planning on it, but now I might have to" I was so tired of not truly doing what I wanted under my parents protective gaze. Both of them afraid of me getting hurt. I made my way towards the gardens, my pace unwavering."Serena wait" I stilled, turning towards him. "I can't control everything you do, but just don’t make dumb decisions” I took a breathe absorbing his words. "And if he ends up hurting you, he'll end up-" I cut him off."Dead, yeah I know, I've heard it a million times" Annoyance laced in my tone as my pace quickened, any words said now a distant blurr. Gods all I wanted was to not be constantly blocked and constricted by everyone around me. Frustration fell over me as I strutted down the halls, corner after corner all of them looked the same, that was until I saw him at the next one. He faltered, looking me in the eyes. Leaning against a wall, waiting for me."There you are" He smiled at me. Before he could process anything I pushed him harder into the wall, our faces now inches apart. Our breathing in tandem as I searched his eyes for truth.“If, you lie to me, I will never forget it” I said, stilling the air between us. “Did you mean what you said earlier?” I questioned, my tone cold and unwelcoming. He froze, gazing into my eyes. “Yes, I want to be the one to escort you to the ball, I want to dance with you, feel your touch against my skin” His hand cupped my face. I leaned in pressing my lips against his, on my tippy toes barely able to reach him. I thought maybe I had guessed wrong, as I tried to pull away his grip on my waist tightened as he pulled me arching towards him. My mind faltered for mere seconds, that was until I once again saw the beautiful face of the male standing before me. Remembered how his touch felt that day he arrived. But I still remained weary.“What is it?” His question lingered between us.“Nothing“ I turned to leave “would you like to walk me back to my quarters?“ The question being a test as to how well he could pick up on hints.“I guess Evalin would not mind waiting a few more minutes“ A smirk grew on his face as he held his arm out for me grab. I accepted, and from there we made our way back to my chamber.“For the record, my dress will be green, and I expect nothing less from you than to match“ I smiled, throwing my head back.“Your wish is my command“ He said playfully, yet I could have sworn a hint of malice laced his voice.“That’s not all” I stopped, turning to face him.“What else then?” His brows raised with a mix of intrigue and curiosity.“I mean, I barely even know you, I want to ask at-least a few questions before I let you take me as your date” The amusement in my voice faded as a waited for his response.“Okay, fine” Well that was easy. “Ask me whatever you’d like, Serena” The last words rolled off his tongue like venom to my ears. It was intoxicating. Too good to be true, only causing me to falter in my trust. But I knew that I wouldn’t hurt him like I hurt that young man in Adarlan.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Serenas pov*I sat at my vanity as Aria neatly arranged my hair in an elegant half up half down style with a silver pin. I thought I looked lovely until I glanced up at Aria. She had this unfamiliar and wild beauty about her, yes she had her mothers coloring, her bright eyes and shimmering hair. But there was something rather ethereal yet raw about her. The beauty of a princess with the poise of a warrior. A few years back I had overheard Gavriel speaking about how much Aria had resembled Aedions mother. Wild, but nonetheless captivating. His words heavy, as if this wound had never truly mended. I jumped feeling something cold grazing my collarbones, I glanced up to see Aria had finished doing my hair, and now she held before me A stunning emerald necklace. One that complimented the hair pin. I lifted my hair of the back of my neck allowing her to fasten the clasp. I was at a loss for words. It wasn't often that I had gotten dressed up like this. I turned around to see Evalin near ready, looking fittingly regal for the occasion. A gold tiara sat atop her head of gold locks. But a distressed look loomed over her."You're going to be great" I reassured her. She offered me a warm smile in exchange. "Are you ready" I got up and made my way towards her, the dimming light casting shadows as a walked."Honestly" She paused for a minute, turning her head to me and Aria "I don't know" Her expressions changed, but she didn't seem fearful, only unsure. Suddenly Aria took both of our hands in hers, facing us in a circle."Well if you're looking to cancel the party, now might just be a little late" I was grateful for Arias quip, she was always quick to brighten the mood. Something about that wildness. No words were exchanged as we stood our ground. Just the three of us, we had been through so much together, seen each-other at our highs and lows. It’s like I could hear the laughter of our childhood in the distance, I wondered if I looked out the window would I see 3 girls running through Orynths gardens, making up games and music. Gods so many years have passed. Aria Glanced out the window as if she were thinking the same, her gaze met mine as if to confirm that she also felt that delicate tug on her heart. The thin line between happiness and sorrow when thinking about your childhood. There was a light knock at the door. I turned making my way towards the sound.“Those must be your dates” Aria said with a wink, taking another swig of her champagne. Evalin snatched it out of her hands, earning a disapproving look for her.“Looks like your party already started” Evalin said pursing her lips around the glass, taking a gulp to calm her nerves. The look of distress written clearly across her brow. Aria pulled out three more flutes to pour us more champagne.“I say, we drink up for our last night before Evalin takes on more responsibilities, and she’ll be locked away forever” She handed us the glasses with a mischievous grin splayed on her face.“Gods don’t be so morbid” Evalin started drinking at a ridiculous pace. “I won’t be tied down, we can still have fun” Another knock came to the door causing me to jump. I was standing mere feet away from it now.“Well? open it! I want to know who it is” Aria winked at me. I cracked to door open, pocking my head out to be greeted by none other than Chiara. I jumped out to hug her almost spilling my drink.“Who is it?” Evalins voice vibrated through the room. I opened the door the reveal our suprise guest. Her straight black hair gleaming as she galavanted in with her golden dress that complimented her deep amber eyes. Aria and Evalin ran up to embrace her. Chiara eyed the half empty bottle of champagne.“Well, it looks like you’ve gotten off to a good start without my help” She placed her bag on the ground, rummaging into it. “But if you need something a little stronger” She pulled out a bottle of liquor. “Adarlans finest, for the finest. But, I will open this on one condition. The birthday girl cannot show up completely hammered to her own party” Aria quickly grabbed the bottle from her, earning a pointed look from Evalin.“What? She said you can’t get hammered” She pointed at Evalins chest. “She never said anything about the rest of us” Whether or not Aria had an issue didn’t seem important in the moment. Right now I just wanted to drink enough to have some courage to dance with Andres, hopefully more. So we drank….~~~~~~~~~I layed on the cold floor, glass in hand. I heard a shallow knock at the door, I glanced at Chiara hoping I wouldn’t have to be the one to get up. Aria laid next to me, Evalin sat on her sofa, the most sober, and Chiaras expression unreadable as always. She could have drank 3 times that of a full grown fae male while still maintaining her composure. I heard the door swing open, hearing steps walking towards me. A shadow of silver hair and tanned skin loomed over me. standing above me was my date, and here I was, on the ground in a drunken haze.“Hello there” I smiled at him, my face flushed from the alcohol. I reached my hand up towards him, still looming over me body. He evaded my touch, walking around to my feet.“Come on” He offered me hand, helping me to my feet. I swung up faster than expected, losing my balance. I stumbled forward as he caught me. I giggled looking up at him as he held me in his arms. Red came over my face as I realized the position I had put myself in. I tucked my face away only to be met with his hand on my chin, tilting my head towards him.“We have a party to attend” He placed me down on the couch next to Evalin who looked rather amused at the scene unfolding before her eyes. He began pouring me a glass of water. “And your parents will kill me if you show up like this. Drink. Now” He placed the glass in my hands, pressing the rim up to my lips. I sputtered water out almost dripping on my dress. “You don’t get to tell me what to do” I argued. He leaned against the armrest of the couch, leaning in till our faces almost touched.“I do, when you’re drunk of your ass, and I’m your escort to what is arguably one of the most important parties in Erilea” He backed away giving me space to sober up.“Make sure that she will be ready in 15 minutes” Those were his last words, pointed towards Chiara as he made his way out of the room. She nodded as if there was an unspoken agreement between the two.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
~Andres POV~ As I approached the door I heard laughter, full and boisterous traveling through the room. Her warm voice filling the gaps. I knocked twice, stepping back to give room for it to open. The dark haired witchling opened the door, opening my veiw to the sight of Serena on the ground with an empty glass in her hand. I moved towards her, every step calculated and precise until I was looming over her casting shadows across her body.“Hello there” She offered me a smile, blushing like a damn fool. As she grabbed for me my feet moved quickly, maneuvering to the opposite side of her body. Gods she was a mess right now, exactly what I needed for this plan to work. It had lifted quite the load off my shoulders when the witch heir had offered her help. Although her motives might have been different, more our of concern for her friend.“Come on” I offered her my hand, helping her up with more force than intended she swung into me, knees buckling from under her as I caught her frame. She giggled softly as another blush came over her face. Gods maybe when this was all over there would still be a chance at a future for us. I know my job comes before my personal life but I can’t ignore the connection blooming between us. She tucked her face away in embarrassment, I moved my hand to her chin, tilting her face up towards mine. Her stupidly beautiful eyes gleaming at me like a lovesick idiot. A tinge of guilt hit me, but I was careful to not let it show.I picked her up and began carrying her towards the plush cushions my cousin rested on. Gods would Evalin ever forgive me if she found out my intentions for pursuing her friend? That was enough, I needed to focus. “We have a party to attend” I placed her down on the couch, avoiding Evalins glare. But when I glanced over it wasn’t disdain that was splayed across her face, it was amusement. Maybe a part of her was enjoying this soft side of Serena. I poured her a glass of water, carefully letting the tablet dissolve without anyones prying eyes watching. “And your parents will kill me if you show up like this. Drink. Now” I placed the glass in her hands, pressing the rim up to her lips. It was killing me not to tell her the truth, but I knew my duties were to my queen, and if she wanted something done the hard way the task was handed off to me. Lost in my own thoughts I hadn’t realized how quickly I had pressed the glass up, she sputtered water out of her mouth, narrowly missing the V of her gown. The gown that was driving me insane. She looked incredible. She opened her mouth to argue “You don’t get to tell me what to do” She folded her arms across her chest, which was spilling out of her top. I leaning in towards her, balancing up on the arm rest so that we were face to face.“I do, when you’re drunk of your ass, and I’m your escort to what is arguably one of the most important parties in Erilea” I backed away, hoping to offer her some solace in order to sober up.“Make sure that she will be ready in 15 minutes” I offered a nod to the witchling, reaffirming our agreement. Maybe after all of this was done, and she’s shipped of to Doranelle we can salvage some of what was built on unstable ground. I shut my eyes tightly not wanting to think about it to much. The memories I would have to evoke, have to remind her of what happened to that boy in Adarlan in order to fulfill my queens task.
