In a boat in the Great Sea there sailed a drawf and an elf. Not a big, heavy ship, with a spacious hull and giant sails, nor yet a tiny, light, uncomfortable canoe with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was an elven boat, and that means comfort. They built it together, inspired by the ships that took elves from the Gray Havens to the Undying Lands, but on a smaller scale, intended to fit only them and the few things they had taken. One fine sunny day they went into the sea. The elf stood on the deck, looking ahead, while the dwarf sat by his feet."Are you sure you know the way, darling?" said the dwarf with concern."I do. We've only to sail in a straight line, following that star," replied the elf, pointing ahead at the sky."What do you mean? We've been going in circles all afternoon.""No, we haven't.""And what star are you talking about? I don't see a thing.""Well, my eyesight is better than yours.""That it is. But we're still going in circles.""We're not! I know how to do this. Do you not trust me?" the elf looked at his companion, glossy-eyed."I do, master elf," the dwarf walked towards the elf, held his hand and kissed it gently. "I won't bother you anymore.""You don't bother me, honey," said the elf, and brought his lips to the dwarf's.Several days later, the elf awoke at midnight and rose from his place between the dwarf's arms to look west. There, surrounded by mist and small as an ant, Aman waited for them. The elf smiled and went to lay along the dwarf again. Hours later they woke, and when they looked west, they saw the high peak of Taniquetil reaching into the sky, the island of Tol Eressea, lonely and silent, and the bay, greeting them with open arms. They crossed through the Enchanted Isles, passed by Tol Eressea and reached toward a city on the coast. They moored the boat on a dock, surrounded by big ships and small canoes. They unloaded their ship, hugged tightly and wiped their tears. On the dock, a crowd of elves waved at them in wonder. One of them, not blackhaired like the rest but with long golden hair, walked toward the elf."Do my eyes decieve me? Legolas? Is it you?""Braithwir, friend! It's so good to see you!" Legolas stepped forward and wrapped the blond elf in a warm embrace."I thought I would never see you again, old friend," but Braithwir saw the dwarf by Legolas' side and his smile faded. "You brought a dwarf? To the Undying Lands? Have you lost your mind?""Ah, yes," sighed Legolas. "Braithwir, this is Gimli, son of Glóin, my husband. Gimli, this is Braithwir. We used to hunt together in Mirkwood.""Husband? Right. You've lost your mind. No matter," he reluctantly shook hands with Gimli, who has used to that kind of reception.Braithwir invited the newcomers into his home, where they washed and ate. Braithwir told them how he'd fallen in love with the sea during the trip, and decided to stay in Alqualonde with the Teleri, instead of going to Tirion most of the other elves who took the Straight Road."Where is this Tirion you talk about?" asked Gimli. "I believe some of our friends might be living there.""Not far," repied Braithwir, looking only at Legolas
"I could take you there tomorrow morning."And so the travellers spent the night in Braithwir' home, warm and comfortable after many nights on their boat, excited to meet their friends again.
