Work Text

Chapter One: A Quiet Saturday (Unfortunately)221B Baker Street was unusually peaceful that Saturday noon. No frantic police calls, no ominous coded messages, no severed limbs in the fridge—just Sherlock Holmes, slumped in his chair, scrolling through emails on his laptop with the enthusiasm of a man watching paint dry.John Watson, on the other hand, was happily typing away at his blog, recounting their last case (which, for once, had involved neither explosions nor international assassins). For a few blissful minutes, all was calm. Then John spoke."Hey, Sherlock, do you know the importance of socializing?"Sherlock didn’t even look up. "No, and I don’t care to."John smirked. "Figures." He shut his laptop and grabbed a book from the pile beside him—an old sociology textbook, its cover faded with age.Sherlock glanced at it, then at John. "I refuse to believe you are willingly reading that.""I’m not," John admitted. "Just found it while organizing my things. Harry sent it to me .Thought you might find it interesting."Sherlock narrowed his eyes. "Why would I find it interesting?""It’s about human behavior," John said innocently.Sherlock snorted. "I already study human behavior. It’s called deduction.""This is different," John countered. "This is about society—how people function in groups, social norms, cultural dynamics—"Sherlock groaned. "John, sociology is just philosophy for people who can’t do math."John grinned. "Read a chapter. I dare you."Sherlock scowled at the challenge. Then, with a dramatic sigh, he snatched the book from John’s hands and flipped it open.John leaned back, fully prepared for the incoming disaster.

Chapter Two: Sherlock vs. SociologySherlock flipped through the pages with the kind of disdain usually reserved for tabloid newspapers and Mycroft’s opinions. His eyes landed on the first chapter title:"The Foundations of Society."He sighed. "This is already insufferable."John smirked. "You haven't even started reading yet."Sherlock cleared his throat and read aloud in an exaggeratedly pompous tone:"‘Humans are social creatures by nature.’"A beat of silence. Then—"Incorrect," Sherlock declared, snapping the book shut.John rolled his eyes. "You didn’t even read the whole section!""I don’t need to! It’s fundamentally flawed. Humans are not naturally social; they are biologically forced into cooperation for survival. If people had a choice, they’d avoid each other entirely."John huffed a laugh. "Right. That’s why every civilization in history has thrived on community and relationships?"Sherlock waved a dismissive hand. "Survival instinct. Nothing more. We tolerate each other to increase our chances of food, shelter, and protection. The moment those needs are met, social interaction becomes obsolete. Look at me!"John gave him a flat look. "Yes, Sherlock. Look at you. Sitting here in our flat, engaging in our conversation, in our friendship, while claiming social interaction is obsolete. Brilliant argument."Sherlock scowled. "This is different.""Of course it is," John said, fighting back a grin. "Go on, read more."Sherlock groaned but obeyed. ---"Socialization begins in childhood through family and peer interactions."Sherlock made a noise that sounded suspiciously like a scoff."‘Family plays a crucial role in shaping a child’s understanding of acceptable behavior.’"A pause. Then:"Mycroft."John burst into laughter. "You thought of him immediately, didn’t you?"Sherlock rubbed his temples. "Unfortunately, yes. And it explains a lot."John wheezed. "Keep reading, I beg you."Sherlock sighed, turning the page. ---"The Importance of Social Norms""‘Norms dictate acceptable behavior within a society and create a sense of order and predictability.’"Sherlock scoffed. "Predictability? Hardly. People break social norms constantly. Lying, hypocrisy, irrational behavior—most so-called ‘norms’ are just rules that people ignore whenever it suits them."John raised an eyebrow. "Right. And what happens when someone really breaks social norms?"Sherlock frowned. "They… get ostracized.""Exactly," John said smugly. "Society works because people generally follow norms. You only notice the exceptions because you ignore them all the time."Sherlock huffed. "I don’t ignore them—I dismiss them as unnecessary."John smirked. "Like wearing proper clothes to a crime scene?"Sherlock crossed his arms. "That was one time.""You showed up in a bedsheet.""John, I was in the middle of an experiment!"John chuckled. "My point stands. Society functions because of norms, and you are living proof of what happens when someone refuses to follow them."Sherlock scowled at the book like it had personally offended him. Then, as if to make things worse, Mrs. Hudson’s voice rang from downstairs:"John, dear! I have biscuits if you and Sherlock want a break from your studying!"John’s grin widened. "She thinks you’re studying."Sherlock snapped the book shut. "Burn this immediately."

Chapter Three: Mycroft Arrives (Because Of Course He Does)Two hours. For two full hours, John subjected Sherlock to the horrors of sociology. The detective had done his best to argue against every concept, scoffing at theories, rolling his eyes at research, and making exaggerated complaints about the sheer absurdity of human society.John, meanwhile, had been having the time of his life.Sherlock’s latest grievance involved a section titled "The Role of Authority in Social Order.""‘People rely on authority figures to maintain structure and enforce laws.’" Sherlock read aloud, then let out a dramatic sigh. "This explains Mycroft."John snorted. "Oh, come on.""It does!" Sherlock gestured wildly at the book. "Society creates power-hungry bureaucrats who thrive on controlling the masses through manipulation and tedious government policies! Mycroft is just an extreme case!""You’re being ridiculous."Sherlock ignored him and continued reading."‘Authority figures serve as stabilizing forces within society, providing leadership and structure.’"He let out an actual laugh. "Stabilizing forces? Mycroft destabilizes everything! He exists solely to irritate me!"And then, as if summoned by sheer force of Sherlock’s complaints—The doorbell rang.John looked at Sherlock. Sherlock looked at John. Then, in slow, dreadful realization, Sherlock muttered, "No."John grinned. "Yes."A moment later, Mrs. Hudson’s voice rang up the stairs."Oooh, Sherlock, dear! Your brother’s here!"Sherlock slammed the book shut and threw it across the room. "I knew this was a mistake!"John was laughing so hard he could barely breathe. The door opened, and in stepped Mycroft Holmes, looking as smug as ever, umbrella in hand, eyes sweeping the room with mild amusement."Ah," he said, taking in Sherlock’s furious expression. "I see you’ve finally discovered the social sciences. Congratulations on reaching the intellectual level of a first-year university student."John collapsed onto the couch in hysterics.Sherlock glared daggers at his brother. "John, I swear—"But John was too busy wheezing with laughter to care.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Chapter Four: Mycroft vs. Sherlock (John Is Loving This)Sherlock pinched the bridge of his nose. "Mycroft, why are you here?""Would you believe me if I said I was in the neighborhood?""No."Mycroft smirked. "Pity. It’s true." He took a slow, deliberate look at the room, his gaze landing on the discarded sociology textbook lying dramatically on the floor. He raised an eyebrow. "Ah. I see you've been learning."Sherlock groaned. "John forced me.""John dared him," John corrected, wiping tears of laughter from his eyes. "Big difference.""Yes, well, Sherlock has never been able to resist a challenge—no matter how trivial," Mycroft mused.Sherlock scowled. "This is why I never studied the social sciences. It’s your domain—boring, bureaucratic nonsense about ‘norms’ and ‘authority.’"Mycroft chuckled. "And yet, you just spent two hours engaging with it."John grinned. "He argued with every single chapter.""Of course he did." Mycroft looked amused. "Sherlock has always been deeply allergic to anything resembling structured human interaction."Sherlock crossed his arms. "Because it’s nonsense. Did you know that, according to this drivel, you are a ‘stabilizing force in society?’"Mycroft looked very pleased. "That sounds about right."Sherlock scoffed. "You’re a destabilizing force. You manipulate systems for your own amusement.""And yet, society continues to function," Mycroft said smoothly. "Almost as if I am stabilizing it."Sherlock threw up his hands. "This is exactly why sociology is ridiculous! It tries to define everything in neat little categories, but human behavior is chaotic!"John leaned back, grinning. "And yet, you're proving the book right just by arguing with it."Sherlock froze. "What?""You read the chapter on norms, right?" John said. "Social expectations, rules of behavior, how people react when those rules are broken?""Yes, and it was insufferable.""Right. And what are you doing right now?"Sherlock blinked. "…Arguing with Mycroft?"John grinned wider. "No. You're rejecting a social concept in the exact way the book describes."Sherlock's mouth opened. Then closed. Then opened again.Mycroft chuckled. "Oh, this is delightful."John clapped his hands together. "Sherlock Holmes, ladies and gentlemen! The living embodiment of social theory!"Sherlock looked betrayed.John reached for his tea, completely satisfied with how this was going.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Chapter Five: Lestrade Walks Into Chaos (And Regrets It Immediately)Just as Sherlock was recovering from John’s deeply irritating revelation, the door to 221B swung open without warning."Knock, knock," came a familiar voice. "I assume neither of you are dead?"Inspector Greg Lestrade stepped inside, looking between Sherlock, Mycroft, and John with the weary expression of a man who immediately regretted entering the room.John beamed. "Oh, this just keeps getting better."Sherlock groaned. "Why are you here, Lestrade?""Because I have actual work to do and need to know if you’re going to help or if I should start solving cases without your dramatic flair," Lestrade said, stepping further in. His gaze landed on the book lying on the floor. "Introduction to Sociology?" He snorted. "Didn’t peg you for a social sciences guy, Sherlock.""He’s not," John said gleefully. "Which is why this has been the funniest two hours of my life."Lestrade raised an eyebrow. "You got him to read a sociology book?""Not just read," John corrected. "Argue with every single chapter."Lestrade let out a low whistle. "Damn. That’s impressive.""It was infuriating," Sherlock snapped."It was hilarious," John countered.Mycroft, still perfectly at ease, added, "And highly educational. I must say, it’s rare to witness Sherlock struggle with basic human behavior."Sherlock glared at him. "You have five seconds to leave."Lestrade, meanwhile, had picked up the book and was flipping through the pages. "Let’s see... 'Authority figures maintain social stability.' Yeah, that tracks. That’s why people listen to me."Sherlock scoffed. "People tolerate you."Lestrade grinned. "And yet, I get things done. Unlike someone who’s spent his afternoon yelling at a textbook."John choked on his tea.Sherlock scowled. "I am never speaking to any of you again."Lestrade smirked. "You always say that, and yet, here we are."Mycroft checked his watch. "This has been delightful, but I must be going. Do try to apply what you’ve learned, Sherlock. I’d hate for you to remain entirely insufferable."Sherlock made a very rude gesture as Mycroft stepped out.John was still grinning. "Lestrade, you have no idea what you just missed.""Oh, I absolutely do," Lestrade said, tossing the book back on the table. "And I’m gutted I wasn’t here for all of it."Sherlock groaned. "Both of you, get out."John patted him on the shoulder. "You did great, mate. Truly. A+ sociology student."Sherlock gave him a murderous look.John just laughed. ---

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Chapter Six: Molly Arrives (And Sherlock Is Absolutely Done With Today)Just as Sherlock was about to throw John and Lestrade out of the flat physically, the door opened again.Molly Hooper stepped inside, carrying a takeaway bag."Hey, I was in the area and thought—" She stopped mid-sentence, looking between Sherlock’s murderous scowl, John’s barely contained laughter, and Lestrade’s amused expression. She blinked. "Did I… walk into something?"Sherlock groaned. "Yes. Leave."John waved her in. "No, no, stay! This is too good."Molly hesitated. "Did something happen?"Lestrade grinned. "Sherlock’s been studying sociology."Molly’s face lit up. "Really?!"Sherlock clenched his jaw. "Do not encourage them, Molly."Molly ignored him and turned to John. "How did you get him to do that?"John smirked. "I dared him."Molly let out a delighted laugh. "Oh my God. This is amazing. Did he—?""He complained about everything," John confirmed."Argued with an actual textbook," Lestrade added."Spent two hours proving sociology right while trying to disprove it," Mycroft called from the hallway as he left.Molly beamed. "I wish I had been here for that!"Sherlock threw up his hands. "That’s it. I’m leaving my own flat."John crossed his arms. "You won’t."Sherlock glared. "Watch me."With a dramatic flourish, he grabbed his coat and swept toward the door—only to stop when Molly lifted the takeaway bag."I brought cake," she said innocently.Sherlock froze.John, Lestrade, and Molly all stared at him, waiting. Then, with a very reluctant sigh, Sherlock stepped back inside and threw his coat onto the chair.John grinned. "Yeah. Thought so."Sherlock shot him a look of pure hatred.Molly giggled and pulled out plates. "You can tell me all about your sociology experience while we eat!"Sherlock groaned, dropping into his chair. "I hate all of you."John clapped him on the shoulder. "We know, mate. We know."Lestrade smirked. "So, what’s the next topic? Political science?"Sherlock pointed at the door. "OUT."

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Chapter Seven: Marriage, Culture & Social Control (And, Of Course, Irene Adler)Sherlock had made a critical mistake.Despite all logic and reason, he had kept reading the sociology book.John and Molly had finished their cake, Lestrade had finally left, and 221B had settled back into a semblance of normalcy. But Sherlock, stubborn as ever, refused to let a book defeat him.Which was how he found himself muttering under his breath, flipping through pages with increasing irritation.John, sprawled on the couch, grinned. "Still at it?"Sherlock ignored him, reading aloud:"‘Marriage is a fundamental social institution that reinforces cultural norms and maintains social order.’"He made a face like he’d just swallowed poison.John smirked. "What’s wrong, mate? Not a fan of ‘social order’?"Sherlock scoffed. "Marriage is a legal contract designed to control resources and property. Romanticized nonsense disguising a financial agreement."Molly, still lingering, raised an eyebrow. "That’s very cynical.""It’s very accurate," Sherlock countered. He flipped the page and read further."‘Marriage also functions as a means of regulating behavior, maintaining social cohesion, and reinforcing cultural traditions.’"Sherlock let out a long suffering sigh. "This is why I despise cultural traditions. All of them are designed to keep people predictable, controlled, boring—"He was just about to launch into another rant when—His phone buzzed.Sherlock frowned. He pulled it out, checked the screen, and—Paused.John sat up. "Who is texting you?"Sherlock didn’t respond. Instead, he let out a slow, deep sigh before muttering, "Speak of the devil…"Before John could ask what that meant, another phone buzzed.His.John frowned and checked the screen. One new message.IRENE ADLER: Miss me?John nearly dropped the phone. "Oh, you have got to be kidding me."Molly’s eyes widened. "Irene?"John looked at Sherlock. "Did you text her?""Obviously not," Sherlock muttered, rubbing his temples. "She has impeccable timing, though."John grinned. "Oh, this is perfect. We were just discussing social control, and now she shows up?"Molly folded her arms. "Is she in London?"Before Sherlock could answer, his phone buzzed again.IRENE ADLER: Be a dear and open the door, Sherlock. I know you're reading about me.Sherlock froze.John’s eyes widened. "No way."Molly’s jaw dropped. "No."John grinned. "Oh my God. She’s actually here."Sherlock took a slow, deep breath, staring at his phone like it had personally betrayed him. Then—A knock at the door.John let out a delighted laugh. "Oh, this just became the best day of my life."Sherlock closed his eyes. "I hate everything."

Chapter Eight: Sherlock vs. Irene vs. SociologyFor a moment, nobody moved.Sherlock stared at the door as if he could will Irene Adler out of existence through sheer force of will.John, on the other hand, was thoroughly enjoying himself. "Well? Aren’t you going to let her in?"Sherlock scowled. "No."Another knock. Then—"Oh, for God’s sake!" came Mrs. Hudson’s voice from downstairs. "Sherlock, stop being dramatic and let the poor woman in!"John wheezed with laughter. "Even Mrs. Hudson wants you to open the door."Sherlock groaned, but before he could refuse again, Molly—who had been silently watching the chaos unfold—took matters into her own hands. She walked past Sherlock, opened the door, and—There she was.Irene Adler.Standing in the doorway, leaning ever so slightly against the frame, lips curved into that smile.Dressed impeccably, hair swept to the side, she surveyed the room like she owned it."Well," she purred, "this is quite the gathering."John beamed. "Irene! Lovely to see you!"Molly, who had definitely not expected to be the one letting The Woman inside, gave her a tight smile. "Hi."Sherlock, however, just glared.Irene turned to him, amusement flickering in her eyes. "Hello, darling."Sherlock folded his arms. "Why are you here?"Irene stepped inside, completely unbothered. "You were reading about me, weren’t you?"Sherlock scoffed. "Hardly."John, grinning like an idiot, picked up the sociology book. "Actually, we were just discussing marriage, culture, and social control."Irene’s eyebrows lifted. "Oh?"Sherlock clenched his jaw. "John. Shut up."John ignored him entirely and continued, "Sherlock was saying that marriage is just a legal contract designed to control resources and property. Also, that cultural traditions exist solely to keep people predictable and boring."Irene’s smile widened. "Fascinating." She turned to Sherlock. "So, you think marriage is just control, then?"Sherlock narrowed his eyes. "Obviously."Irene hummed. "And yet, you’re obsessed with beating social control, aren’t you? Breaking the rules? Going against expectations?"Sherlock folded his arms. "Your point?"Irene stepped closer, her voice a little too amused. "That would make me your worst nightmare, wouldn’t it?"John choked on his tea.Molly’s eyes widened.Sherlock didn’t move, didn’t even blink, but John could see the muscle in his jaw tighten.Irene smirked. "Because I play by those rules, don’t I? Social norms, power dynamics, manipulation—"Sherlock huffed a laugh. "You weaponize them."Irene’s smirk deepened. "Exactly." She leaned in ever so slightly. "So tell me, Sherlock Holmes, if all of these things are just tools of control… why do they work on you?"John lost it.Sherlock visibly clenched his fists. "OUT."John, laughing so hard he could barely breathe, leaned into the couch. "Oh, this is better than the book."Irene, looking highly satisfied, took a step back and shrugged. "I’ll leave you to your studies, then." She turned toward the door, then added, "Try not to let sociology ruin your perception of human connection, Sherlock. Some of it can be fun."With that, she walked out, closing the door behind her.The flat fell completely silent.John wiped tears from his eyes. "Oh my God."Molly turned to Sherlock, trying very hard not to laugh. "That was… something."Sherlock, still standing completely still, let out a deep, exhausted sigh.Sherlock stormed past him, collapsing into his chair with a loud groan. "Never again."John wiped his eyes. "I dunno, mate. I think we learned a lot today."Sherlock glared at him. "Get. Out."John just grinned. "See? Social norms. You can’t actually throw me out. You’re trapped in this cultural structure with me."Sherlock grabbed a pillow and threw it at his head.Molly giggled. "Worth it."

John’s Blog Post Later, in the evening John sits down to write today's hilarious event. The Personal Blog of Dr. John H. WatsonTitle: Sherlock Holmes vs. Sociology (A Study in Absolute Chaos)I have seen Sherlock Holmes do a lot of ridiculous things.I have seen him harass police officers at crime scenes while wearing a dressing gown.
I have seen him try to microwave evidence.
I have seen him chase a criminal down the street while still holding a human skull.
I have even seen him convince a room full of armed men that he was a psychic. But nothing—nothing—compares to what I witnessed today. It started with a book. A very normal, completely harmless sociology textbook. Found it while reorganizing my things, left it with my sister Harry when I went to Afghanistan, she returned it a few days ago. Thought Sherlock might get a kick out of it.He did not.He argued with it. He rolled his eyes at it. He dismissed entire fields of study as “idiotic” and called sociology “philosophy for people who can’t do math.”He also spent two hours proving the book right while trying to disprove it.Then, of course, Mycroft arrived—because of course he did. There was some classic sibling bickering, during which Mycroft thoroughly enjoyed Sherlock’s suffering. Then Lestrade arrived. Then Molly. Then, because the universe truly loves me, Irene Adler showed up in person.Sherlock, who had just finished ranting about marriage, culture, and social control, was immediately obliterated by Irene simply existing in the same room. It was beautiful. It was poetic. It was the best day of my life.By the end of it all, Sherlock returned the book to me—calmly, but with the exact energy of someone handing over a murder weapon after an exhausting crime spree. He then told me he would rather solve fifty cases involving international conspiracies than ever discuss social sciences again.Which, honestly, only makes me want to find a psychology book next.I’ll keep you all updated.P.S. If you see a sociology textbook lying in the street, it might be mine. Just bring it back. Or don't. Sherlock has suffered enough.

Chapter Nine: A Most Unpleasant DreamSherlock Holmes had endured many unbearable things in his life.He had endured boredom—true boredom, the kind that made his mind claw at itself in desperation.
He had endured Mycroft.
He had endured John forcing him to eat vegetables.
And today, he had endured sociology. Now, stretched out on the couch, he was enduring monarchy and autocracy. It was past midnight, and the book was still in his hands, open to a chapter detailing the historical importance of absolute rule. He had been trying to delete this entire day from his mind palace, erase it like a bad experiment gone wrong. But there was one problem. He couldn't bring himself to delete the way John had laughed today. That genuine, ecstatic laughter—the kind that reached his eyes, crinkling the corners, making his entire face light up in a way that was almost... pleasant to witness. It was infuriating. So, instead of throwing the book into the recycling bin where it belonged, Sherlock continued reading, letting his mind drift further and further...Until, to his absolute horror—He fell asleep. ---Sherlock’s Dream: King MoriartySherlock opened his eyes to find himself in a grand, candlelit throne room.Golden chandeliers. Velvet curtains. Banners adorned with an insignia that looked disturbingly like a skull wearing a crown. And, at the center of it all, sitting on an absurdly large throne, draped in royal robes—Jim Moriarty.Grinning. Wearing a crown. Holding a scepter.Sherlock sighed deeply."Ahhh, Sherlock," Moriarty purred, lounging on the throne. "So glad you could make it to my coronation. You look awful, by the way."Sherlock pinched the bridge of his nose. "No. Absolutely not.""Oh, yes," Moriarty sang, twirling the scepter. "Welcome to my monarchy, my little consulting detective! Where I make the rules, I control society, and you, dear Sherlock, are just another one of my peasants."Sherlock scowled. "I refuse to entertain whatever this is."Moriarty gasped dramatically. "Oh, but you must!" He leaned forward, eyes sparkling. "We’re talking about absolute power, Sherlock! And, lucky me, I get to be the big bad king."Sherlock crossed his arms. "You would be the worst king in history."Moriarty placed a hand over his chest, pretending to look hurt. "Oh, come on. You don’t think I’d be a brilliant ruler?""No," Sherlock said flatly. "You’d get bored within a week and burn your own kingdom down just to amuse yourself."Moriarty grinned. "Exactly! That’s what makes it fun."Sherlock groaned. "This is idiotic."Moriarty gestured to the throne beside him. "Oh, lighten up! Sit down, have a glass of wine, let’s discuss oppressive rule!"Sherlock gave him a deeply unimpressed look. "I’d rather drink acid."Moriarty pouted. "Oh, Sherlock, you wound me."Sherlock turned to leave—except the entire castle door vanished.Moriarty tsked. "Oh no, no, no. You’re in my kingdom, remember? I control this dream. And you, my dear detective, are my royal subject."Sherlock clenched his jaw. "I am going to wake up now."Moriarty smirked. "Are you? Or are you trapped here forever, forced to witness my reign of chaos?"Sherlock inhaled sharply—And then, mercifully, woke up. ---Back in 221BSherlock’s eyes snapped open.He was back on the couch, the monarchy book still resting on his chest. The dim light from the fireplace flickered against the walls. For a moment, he just lay there, staring at the ceiling, processing. Then—"I hate that book."He sat up, rubbing his temples. That was, without question, the worst mind palace experience of his life.

Chapter Ten: The Question Sherlock Never Thought He’d Ask4 A.M.His breath came out in short, controlled exhales. The remnants of his dream—King Moriarty, absolute rule, chaos—lingered in his mind like smoke. He ran a hand through his curls and looked around. The flat was quiet, the only sound the distant hum of London outside.4:07 A.M.John wasn’t in his chair. He was upstairs, in bed.Sherlock exhaled and sat up. His hand drifted to the book still resting beside him.Monarchy and Autocracy. His first instinct was to toss it aside—but instead, he turned the page.Types of Family and Marriage.Sherlock’s fingers tightened slightly on the spine.Family. Marriage. Love.Ridiculous concepts, he had always told himself. Institutions of control. Social constructs designed to force people into predictable behaviors. He had dismissed them outright—until today. Until John’s laughter had refused to be deleted. His eyes drifted toward the stairs. He wanted to ask. Needed to ask.Are we a family? Could we ever be?Sherlock Holmes did not fear many things. But this—this question—terrified him.So, he did what he always did when something unsettled him.He went into his mind palace. ---The Mind Palace: Moriarty and JohnSherlock opened his eyes and found himself back in the throne room.Moriarty was still on the throne, twirling the scepter, looking far too pleased."Back so soon, sweetheart?" Moriarty purred. "Couldn’t stay away?"Sherlock ignored him and turned toward the second figure in the room.John Watson.Mind Palace John stood in front of him, hands in his pockets, looking at Sherlock exactly the way real John always did when Sherlock was about to say something stupid."What’s on your mind?" Mind Palace John asked.Sherlock hesitated. Then:"Are we a family?"Mind Palace John raised an eyebrow. "You tell me."Sherlock inhaled sharply. "I don’t know."Moriarty laughed. "Oh, darling, you’re adorable when you’re emotionally stunted."Sherlock shot him a glare. "Shut up."Moriarty grinned. "You can study power, control, society—but you can't study this, can you?" He leaned forward. "Because love isn’t logical. That’s why it terrifies you."Sherlock clenched his jaw.Mind Palace John tilted his head. "So what are you going to do about it?"Sherlock closed his eyes.A quote surfaced in his mind, something he had read long ago but never truly considered until now:"To be loved is to be seen completely—flaws and all—and chosen anyway."Sherlock opened his eyes.Moriarty smirked. "Oh, you’ve figured it out, haven’t you?"Sherlock turned away. "I’m leaving."Moriarty waved. "Tell Johnny-boy I said hello!" ---221B Baker Street: 4:23 A.M.Sherlock’s eyes snapped open. The flat was silent. He stood. His movements were automatic, precise, as he made his way upstairs.John’s door was half-open, the soft glow of a bedside lamp illuminating his sleeping form. Sherlock hesitated for only a second before stepping inside."John."John stirred slightly. "Mm?" His eyes cracked open, unfocused, confused. "Sherlock? What the hell—?"Sherlock didn't speak. He just leaned down and kissed him.John inhaled sharply against his lips, startled but not pulling away. When Sherlock finally broke the kiss, John was staring at him, wide-eyed, awake now."What—"Sherlock swallowed. "Would you like to be in a relationship with me?"Silence. Then—John let out a small, breathless laugh. "Are you asking me out at 4:30 in the morning?"Sherlock exhaled. "Yes."John blinked. "Have you slept at all?""Irrelevant."John grinned. "Bloody hell."Then—he grabbed Sherlock’s collar and pulled him into another kiss.Sherlock made a soft, startled sound before melting into it, something warm and unfamiliar blooming in his chest.John pulled back slightly, eyes crinkling at the corners. "Took you long enough."Sherlock let out a breathless, half-laugh, half-sigh. "Shut up, John."John smirked. "Never."And Sherlock thought—maybe he didn’t need to delete this day after all.

Chapter Eleven: Sociology, Kinship, and FamilyIt was Sunday afternoon, and Sherlock Holmes had already spent a considerable amount of time glaring at his laptop screen in the dim light of the living room. The Monarchy and Autocracy book was still lying open on the couch, having somehow made its way back to the living room after Sherlock’s brief foray into trying to read it again.John was sitting at the kitchen table, fiddling with his phone while eating a sandwich, trying not to think too hard about what had happened earlier—about Sherlock, and the way Sherlock had kissed him at 4:30 in the morning and asked him if he wanted to be in a relationship. The thought of it still made his heart race. Then, Sherlock’s voice broke through the silence.“John.”John looked up from his phone, eyebrows raised in mild curiosity. “What is it now, Sherlock?”Sherlock was standing near the bookshelf, holding the Sociology textbook that John had tossed aside the night before. He was flipping through it, reading a passage aloud in that voice of his, which made everything sound far more intense than it probably was.“‘Kinship, family... the ties that bind us... The social norms of our relationships, John.’” Sherlock paused dramatically, looking up from the book. “How utterly fascinating.”John, still trying to not get too lost in his own feelings, couldn't help but chuckle softly. “I take it you don’t enjoy sociology?”Sherlock's expression was one of deep distaste. “It’s a dreadful subject. Ridiculous, really. And, dare I say, too human for my liking.”John put down his phone and leaned back in his chair, regarding Sherlock. “So, do you know what you’re going to do with the book, then?”Sherlock stared at the pages for a moment, as though they had personally offended him. “I’m going to finish it, obviously. I’ve already committed to it.”John smirked. “You can’t just abandon it after reading it for so long.”Sherlock gave him a sharp look. “Oh, I’d prefer to abandon the entire field of study. Sociology is just a fancy name for people’s attempt at rationalizing their often irrational behavior.”John shrugged, a fond smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Couldn’t you say that about everything you study?”Sherlock’s lips curled upward, but only just. “Touché, John.”Just then, John’s phone buzzed, and he glanced at it. His face softened as he read the message.“It’s from Harry.”Sherlock raised an eyebrow. “Ah. Your sister. What did she send you now? A bag of unreadable text messages?”“No,” John said with a soft laugh, holding up the phone to show Sherlock. “She sent me a photo of something she found in her attic.”Sherlock looked at it for a moment before his gaze returned to John, confused. “What is it? Another box of your childhood memories?”John’s eyes sparkled. “No, it’s this.” He handed the phone over to Sherlock. It was a photo of the very same sociology book that Sherlock had been so reluctantly reading. “She sent me the book, Sherlock. Apparently, she found it among her things.”Sherlock stared at the photo, blinking. “What?”John smiled. “Yeah. It’s funny, isn’t it? I had no idea she was keeping it all these years.”Sherlock gave him a sideways glance. “And you didn’t think to mention that this… tome was part of your academic history?”John let out a small chuckle, shaking his head. “No, I didn’t. It’s not exactly something I’d boast about.” He paused. “I took Sociology as a generic elective when I was at Uni. Just to round out my proper medical education.”Sherlock raised an eyebrow. “You’re telling me you studied sociology on purpose?”John smirked, leaning back. “Yes, Sherlock. Sociology. The study of human society, cultures, and relationships.”Sherlock frowned. “Why would you study such a thing? You were destined for the medical field. What relevance could that have?”John shrugged, a nostalgic smile tugging at his lips. “At the time, I thought it was a waste. I was focused on anatomy, medicine... all the hard sciences. Sociology felt like a distraction. But looking back, I’m glad I did it.”Sherlock stared at him, intrigued. “Why?”John’s smile softened. “Because it led to us, Sherlock.”Sherlock froze. For a moment, his world seemed to stand still as John’s words sank in.John was looking at him with that open, honest expression Sherlock had grown so accustomed to. And then—without warning—he reached out and tapped Sherlock’s nose with the book. “And I’m thankful Harry sent it. It’s led to this.”Sherlock blinked, his mind still processing the sudden surge of warmth in his chest. “Led to this?” he repeated, his voice softer than usual.John leaned closer, his voice low, his gaze filled with affection. “Yes. Sherlock, I’m glad I took sociology, even if I resented it at the time. Because it brought me here. With you.” He pressed his lips to Sherlock’s nose. “You mad man, I absolutely love you.”Sherlock stood still for a moment, unsure how to respond. His heart was racing, and he didn’t know whether it was from the weight of John’s confession or the sheer absurdity of it all. “You—what?”John laughed, his smile bright and genuine. “I love you. And I’m going to thank Harry for sending this stupid book.”Sherlock’s mind was spinning. He wasn’t sure what to make of the sudden, emotional turn. But before he could say anything more, John stood and made his way toward the kitchen, muttering under his breath, “Might make some tea. You could use some after that.”Sherlock stayed rooted in place, the book still in his hand. He wasn’t sure what had just happened, but it felt… right. And he couldn’t quite bring himself to question it. ---The Next Day: Sunday, 3:30 P.M.It was well into the afternoon when the sound of the doorbell rang through the flat, followed by the familiar, deeply irritating sound of Mycroft’s voice calling from downstairs.“Sherlock! Open the door.”Sherlock groaned. “I didn’t even invite him.”John, still in the middle of making tea, raised an eyebrow. “Well, you could at least pretend to enjoy his company.”Sherlock made an exaggerated noise of annoyance as he trudged down the stairs. “You can go enjoy your tea, John. I’ll deal with the perfectly insufferable Mycroft.”John smiled softly, shaking his head. “I don’t know if I can stand you two going at it all day.”Sherlock threw open the door to find his brother standing there, gift-wrapped books in hand.“Ah, Sherlock,” Mycroft said, his tone equal parts smug and condescending. “I see you’ve managed to finish that delightful book. I do hope you found it intellectually stimulating.”Sherlock rolled his eyes. “Yes, Mycroft. It was an experience I’d rather not repeat.”Mycroft ignored the comment, his lips curling into an all-knowing smile. “Well, I’ve brought you a present. A set of sociology books, naturally. Since you seem so intent on thoroughly studying humanity’s faults, I thought I’d help you along.”Sherlock’s eyes narrowed. “More books?”Mycroft held out the stack of books, smiling like a cat who had just cornered a mouse. “Indeed. But I do have a question.”Sherlock raised an eyebrow. “What question?”Mycroft tilted his head, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Shall I expect a happy announcement soon, Sherlock? Mummy would be delighted. Wouldn’t she?”Sherlock was silent for a moment, a small smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Oh, no doubt. She’ll be thrilled.”John appeared at the top of the stairs, raising an eyebrow at the exchange. “What’s this about a happy announcement?”Mycroft’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Oh, nothing at all. Just wondering if Sherlock has decided to make an honest man out of you yet, John.”John just stared at Mycroft. His lips moved as if to say something, then he pursed his lips again. Instead of replying to that, he invited Mycroft inside, since Sherlock seemed intent on having all the conversation with Mycroft (this time) at their door.Meanwhile, Sherlock stared at the pile of books Mycroft had just deposited into his arms. Five volumes, all sociology-related, each one gift-wrapped with a ribbon.John looked utterly delighted by the absurdity of it all. "Wow, Mycroft. You really went all out."Sherlock’s expression was one of pure suffering. "He enjoys this, John. He lives for it."Mycroft smirked. "I simply thought, given your recent… academic pursuits, that you might enjoy some supplementary reading material."Sherlock scoffed, dropping the books onto the nearest table with a loud thud. "You did this solely to torment me.""Well," Mycroft said, adjusting his umbrella, "it’s a bonus that it torments you. But no, Sherlock. It is a genuine gift. Consider it an investment in your… personal development."Sherlock glared. "I do not require personal development."John chuckled, stepping forward to inspect the books. "Let’s see what we’ve got, then. The Psychology of Human Behavior, Structural Functionalism in Modern Society—oh, this one’s good—The Social Significance of Marriage."Sherlock groaned. Loudly.John grinned. "Oh, come on. You might learn something."Mycroft cleared his throat. "On the subject of marriage—""No," Sherlock interrupted immediately.John, still grinning, turned to Mycroft. "What were you saying?"Sherlock glared at him.Mycroft smirked. "Oh, I was just wondering whether I should expect a formal announcement soon. Mummy would be delighted, you know. Always did say you two were an inevitability."Sherlock pinched the bridge of his nose. "Mycroft, I swear to everything logical in this world, if you don’t leave right now—""Or what?" Mycroft said, clearly enjoying himself. "You’ll deduce me to death?"John laughed. "He might."Sherlock turned his glare toward John. "You are not helping."John shrugged. "You did wake me up at 4:30 in the morning to ask if we were in a relationship. I think I deserve a little fun at your expense."Sherlock groaned again, flopping dramatically onto the couch. "This is a nightmare. I should have thrown that book out the window when I had the chance."John sat on the arm of the couch, reaching down to ruffle Sherlock’s hair. "But then we wouldn’t be here, would we?"Sherlock huffed but didn’t move away. "Unacceptable."Mycroft watched the exchange with a knowing smirk. "Well, I’ll leave you two to… continue your intellectual pursuits. Enjoy the books, Sherlock. Oh, and do let me know when I should start planning the wedding invitations. I'm sure you two will come to a logical conclusion soon."Sherlock grabbed a pillow and threw it at Mycroft’s head.Mycroft dodged it effortlessly, smirking as he strolled toward the door. "Goodbye, Sherlock. Goodbye, John.""Bye, Mycroft!" John called cheerfully, completely unbothered.Sherlock groaned again as the door shut. For a long moment, he just lay there, staring at the ceiling. Then, finally, he sighed and sat up, grabbing one of the books off the pile.John raised an eyebrow. "So you are reading them."Sherlock flipped open the book without looking up. "Only so I can dismantle every single argument within these pages."John smirked. "Whatever helps you sleep at night, love."Sherlock froze for half a second before regaining composure, casually flipping to another page.John leaned down and kissed his cheek. "You’re ridiculous, Sherlock Holmes. And I absolutely love you for it."Sherlock didn’t respond immediately. But John saw the tiny, pleased smile on his lips.Sherlock said after a moment of thinking,
"I notice, I see, I want to know 'everything' about you, I observe, I memorise, I want to make you happy, & more importantly be happy with you, ... Be with you... Share myself, my life with *you* John, so.. So I do, I, Love, you, John.""Come here, my love".
And John pressed his lips to Sherlock's & they were both snogging on their couch. The End.
