There were so many sounds. His eyelids clicked. His muscles stretched. His breathing was steady and regular. His chest rose and fell.Lymph and blood was a constant reassuring roar. It was an ocean. The beast stood over Van Helsing and listened to it all.He knew that heartbeat better than he knew himself. There was no sound as precious. He had no interest in his own existence before that sound. He would weep when that sound finally ceased. He would mourn that sound forever, but he would sacrifice anything to ensure his lover's place beside him. To be bound inextricably for all time.Van Helsing would never know hunger. The beast would not permit it.His memories of hunger were fresh and violent. It was an agony that echoed over centuries. Clawing at earth. Screaming with no voice.Lawrence would ever be sated. Lawrence would never know the agony of hunger. True hunger. Lawrence would never know such a thing existed. Dracula would not permit it.He would gleefully break the pact and shatter everything he had sworn to if it stood between Lawrence and his feed.Lawrence would never know hunger. He would not permit it.There was so much that Lawrence did not yet understand. If the beast had his way, Lawrence would never understand. Not all of it. The beast had known deprivation of every kind and Lawrence would know none of it.Lawrence would suffer not one moment so long as it was within his power to prevent it and the beast knew that there was a great deal within his power. The beast was unaccustomed to trepidation. He despised uncertainty. It had been nearly two decades with this mortal by his side. Not enough time. Not nearly enough time.Only moments. He required more.He demanded infinity and Lawrence's pale God would give him what he wanted.Time was supposed to pass as a sequence of little consequence.Time had slowed to an impudent crawl with his mortal lover. When would the change be complete?Would the change ever be complete?Would Lawrence finally bare himself and permit himself to be taken? He had waited long enough.Lawrence had confessed his fear and the beast was powerless in the face of Van Helsing's fear.He would not take him in fear. He would take him by force if necessary but he longed to take him with joy. There should only be joy.Lawrence was life in suspension. He was not man.He was not a beast. He was Lawrence. It was fitting in a way. Lawrence was ever and always the most singular of beings. Why should this be any different? For more than 500 years there had never been a Lawrence and there would never be one again. This specific one could never wink out and vanish. He would not permit it.The beast could sense the sunset. As the final rays dipped below the horizon Van Helsing’s bright blue eyes snapped open as if to replace the sunlit sky.The beast had pulled the covers off of his lover's body while he slept, the better to regard him in full.Lawrence felt no surprise at waking nude and uncovered in any way.The beast always wanted him. There was such warmth for him in Van Helsing's eyes and had any creature ever regarded him so?His lover's voice filled him with satisfaction.Lawrence spoke softly, affectionately.“How long have you been standing there?”The beast felt as if he had been standing there since the beginning of time.He smiled faintly.“Not long.”
