""We should break up."The words hung in the air between them, heavy and final. Yunjin's heart stopped, her eyes fixed on Kazuha's profile illuminated by the TV's glow. The movie played on, forgotten, as her world crumbled around those three words.No.Kazuha didn't say anything. Silent. Final. The distant hum of the dorm's air conditioning felt deafening in the quiet. The words pierced through Yunjin's chest like shards of ice. Her throat constricted, heart hammering against her ribs as a cold wave washed over her. Their usually cozy dorm room suddenly felt too warm, too small, yet somehow vast and empty all at once. She couldn't breathe. Her eyes burned as they stayed fixed on Kazuha's profile, searching for any sign, any hint of what she was thinking, but Kazuha just sat there...and somehow that silence hurt more. Her mind raced to their fight three days ago—how Kazuha's eyes had flashed with frustration when Yunjin had kept messaging during her solo schedule filming. "I need to focus sometimes, Yunjin-ah," Kazuha had said, voice tight. Was that it? Had Yunjin been too clingy, too needy?  The memory morphed into other moments: Kazuha's quiet sigh when Yunjin had tensed up seeing her laugh too freely with her drama co-star last week. The slight edge in her voice when Yunjin had waited in the company building after her individual practice—"You don't need to wait up every time." The way Kazuha had pulled her hand away during group dinner, whispering they needed to be more careful in public. Yunjin's eyes dropped to Kazuha's hand resting on the couch—just inches away, but it might as well have been miles. Like that time Kazuha hadn't replied to her texts for six hours (she'd been filming her drama scenes, Yunjin knew that now, but at the time...). Or how Kazuha had chosen to eat with her drama cast twice this week (it was normal, for networking, but why did it hurt so much?). Her vision blurred as tears welled up. Every small moment of distance between them suddenly felt magnified, significant. The way Kazuha had rolled her eyes this morning when Yunjin asked if they could practice their duet together ("We literally have scheduled practice time, baby"). The slight irritation in her voice when Yunjin kept asking if she was mad ("I'm not angry, I'm just exhausted from shooting"). God, had Yunjin been suffocating her all this time? Their hands on the couch—still not touching. When was the last time Kazuha had reached for her first? This morning in the practice room? Yesterday in the waiting room? Yunjin couldn't remember, and that terrified her. Everything felt like signs she should have seen: Kazuha taking extra vocal lessons, choosing to practice alone sometimes, falling asleep during movie nights before Yunjin could tell her about her day. A tear slipped down her cheek as she remembered their first kiss in that empty practice room at 3 AM, how Kazuha had held her like she was precious, when the pressure of comeback preparations had almost broken her. Would she ever feel that again? Or had she ruined everything by being too much, wanting too much, loving too much? More tears fell as her mind spiraled deeper searching for the reason why would Kazuha break up with her right her right now. What if their busy schedules were just an excuse? What if Kazuha had been trying to tell her all along? What if— "Yunjin-ah?" Kazuha's voice cut through. Kazuha's voice was warm with worry. "Baby, you're crying. What's wrong?" Yunjin tried to speak, but a sob escaped instead. Kazuha immediately pulled her close, and the gentle familiarity of her touch only made Yunjin cry harder. "I'm sorry," Yunjin choked out. "I know I'm too much sometimes, and you need space, and I keep messaging during your drama filming, and—" "Hey, hey," Kazuha pulled back just enough to cup Yunjin's face, thumbs wiping at endless tears. "What are you talking about? Is this about the movie?" "But you were tired the other day, and you didn't want me waiting up, and—" Understanding dawned in Kazuha's eyes, followed by a mix of tenderness and exasperation. "Oh, baby. You're spiraling again, aren't you? Just like we talked about?" Yunjin hiccupped, trying to look away, but Kazuha held her gently in place. "Listen to me, okay? Yes, I asked for focus during filming, but not because I don't want you. We talked about this—I need to concentrate sometimes, just like you do during your radio show recordings. Remember?" "But—" "And yes, sometimes I get frustrated, or exhausted, or need alone time. But that doesn't mean I'm leaving you." Kazuha's smile was soft. "Didn't we agree that it's okay to have separate schedules? That it makes us stronger?" Yunjin sniffled. "You rolled your eyes at practice..." "Because you're adorably ridiculous, wanting to schedule extra practice when we already spend hours together." Kazuha kissed her forehead. "Not because I don't want to sing with you." "The drama co-star—" "Is married, as I told you last week when you got jealous." Now Kazuha was definitely fighting a smile. "And even if he wasn't, I only want you, my emotional main vocalist." Fresh tears fell, but they felt different now. "I'm sorry. The movie, they were breaking up, and suddenly everything from this week felt so big and scary and—" "And your beautiful brain took you straight to worst-case scenarios." Kazuha pulled her closer, letting Yunjin bury her face in her neck. "Just like when you cried for an hour last month convinced I was mad at you because I didn't send our secret emoji in my bubble message." "That was different," Yunjin mumbled against her skin. "Was it? Because I distinctly remember having to show you my phone to prove I never use heart emojis in bubbles, only in private messages." "Shut up," but Yunjin was smiling now, embarrassment replacing panic. "My sensitive baby," Kazuha's voice was full of affection. "Always feeling everything so deeply. But you know what?" "What?" "That's one of the reasons I love you." Kazuha pressed a kiss to her temple. "Even if it means sometimes having to remind you that no, I'm not breaking up with you because I had to film late and missed our secret practice time." "That was one time!" "Three times, actually." Kazuha laughed softly. "Want to watch something less dramatic now? Before you convince yourself I'm leaving the group to become a penguin trainer in Antarctica?" Yunjin pinched her side lightly. "I hate you." "No, you don't. You love me so much you cry at movies thinking about losing me." "...maybe." "Definitely." Kazuha reached for the remote with one hand, keeping the other firmly around Yunjin. "Now, how about that cooking show you love? Unless you think the failed recipes are metaphors for our relationship?" Yunjin couldn't help but laugh, the last of her anxiety melting away. "You're never going to let me live this down, are you?" "Never," Kazuha promised, kissing her softly. "I plan to tease you about it for a very, very long time." And in those words, in the warmth of Kazuha's embrace, Yunjin found all the reassurance she needed. They were okay. They were together. Even if she sometimes got a little too emotional over movie plots and missing emojis.
