The Rain After the Storm

Work Text

“It's raining.” He points out, his dark blue eyes reflecting the stars peeking out from the clouds as if they were two oceans.Usually he'd run out and stand in it, letting the droplets soak him until he could be wrung like a wet towel but… it felt different to him now.Now it only reminds him of that final battle. His tunic and pants had absorbed the rain that fell, making him feel heavy, and movement even harder. Everything already hurt, especially his arm.It still does.As he holds onto Zelda's hand tightly with his own, he feels a different kind of electricity.Pain.Lighting scars run up his hand to his arm, and then all the way to his right cheek. It had even spread to his chest. The branches of lightning surrounded the golden triangles, framing it like vines. Like… Demise had claimed the Triforce. But… he never even got close. And she was home now.“Link?” A familiar, melodic voice snaps him out of his thoughts and back to reality. Her voice was different now. It held a deep wisdom behind it, and a hint of melancholy.“Yeah?” He replies, his gaze falling onto her.“Is everything alright?” She asks. No,It wasn't.The girl standing right in front of him, the girl he's grown up with, fell in love with……was really the goddess he'd been praying to all this time in a past life.Had she ever heard them? Or was that side of her resting deep within her consciousness, waiting for the fateful day it would be awakened? Now wasn't the time to ask all these questions, no matter how much he wanted to know. He still couldn't possibly comprehend it, nor could he pin down his thoughts on it.All he really knew was that, yes, he was in love with her, she was right here with him, and she felt the same.“Link.”He blinks.“I… I just can't see the rain the same ever again.” He says, spitting at least something out and shifting his gaze back to the sky. There was silence for a moment, allowing him to drown in his thoughts as the sky cried, its tears hitting the ground and turning dirt to mud. Quenching the thirst of the grass, and the trees, and the fungi, and the creatures that roam the land they stand still in.Zelda watches him as he does, her own mind cannot ground itself, for it stubbornly refuses to come down. She would rather stay up there, watching as Link daydreams, staring up at the blue sky with that twinkle in his eyes. It's still there… only it's changed, transformed. So has he.And so has she. They could stand here in silence and wait until the rain clears to continue exploring. Zelda had already seen this place before in its entirety. She had watched over it and those who used to dwell there so long ago.Her stomach churns.Don't think of that right now, Zelda. She tells herself. It was terrible for her to be left alone with her thoughts right now. They had been flooded with memories of bloodshed, terror and uncertainty. She much preferred her mind being flooded with Link. Her senses to be overtaken by him…Get a hold of yourself! She scolds. But it was good her mind went to that memory. Of their first kiss. How his lips captured hers so delicately, and how he held her close in that moment.Currently, those lips were curled in a slight frown, his eyelids as heavy as his heart. His fluffy brown hair tousled by the wind as it maneuvered through the crowd of trees. Like how the leaves shook and danced because of its touch. What could she possibly say to get him to smile like he used to? Like when they were younger, laughing and joking with each other in their Academy dorm rooms as the time passed by quickly. Before they knew it, afternoon turned to twilight.Laughing and smiling, without a care in the world, or an inkling of an idea of what was to come later on.“Then don't look at it,” She says, “Look at me.”Link blinks, and his tired eyes meet hers. Instead of her stomach churning, it flutters. Those blue eyes… How many times had she gotten lost in them? Eventually she had learned her way around in them. But now he's changed, and she can't understand what's going on behind them, because he won't let her in.She'll just have to drag him out then.Literally.Zelda pulls him out from under the shelter of the tree, and their clothes are immediately soaked.“What are you doing?” He asks, his brows crease, looking up at her as he blinks the rain out of his eyes. He's somewhat amused by her usual antics, but also concerned. “We're going to catch colds!”“Oh, stop worrying so much.” She tells him, taking his other hand and using it to spin him around. He laughs, but still looks confused.“It's true, though! We're going to get sick!” He argues, but she shushes him by putting her finger to his plump lips. Her eyes had that familiar glint of mischief in them. Link was honestly glad to see it, it was a glint of the past, a glint of normalcy. He can't help but crack a chuckle and a smile.Zelda smiles back at him. Her plan was working. She pulls him further out into the rain, places her hand on his chest and begins swaying back and forth. Stepping back, stepping forward. They both begin to move in sync, moving as one. His hand in hers, the other on her waist, keeping her close. Link was smiling like an idiot. He couldn’t help it.Despite everything that happened in the past few days, all he could focus on was the present. Or rather… Zelda. He loved her more than life itself. All he wanted was to see her again, and here she was, looking absolutely gorgeous in the moonlight, her eyes on him. He was so happy he could cry. And he did.“I’m sorry, I just-” He began apologizing, but Zelda interrupted him. “Don’t apologize.” She said, lifting her free hand and wiping the tears off his cheek gently. It stung a little because his scar was still healing, but he didn’t let it show, so she didn’t think she hurt him. She already looked up at him with such concern. Her eyes searched his own with a great intensity, and all he could do was stare back.“You look beautiful.” He blurted out, and her eyebrows lifted. Zelda froze entirely. That came out of nowhere, but it wasn’t unwanted. He looked beautiful himself, despite all the dirt on his face. She wanted to kiss him so badly right now. “Sorry, I-”Before Link could even think about finishing that sentence, he was shut up when Zelda’s lips met his. His brain shut off like an ancient robot whenever he striked a timeshift stone. Then he snapped back to reality, his eyes fluttered shut, and he leaned into the kiss.
