It was an unseasonably cold night. The fresh blanket of snow casting a soft glow over the Arklay Mountains. Below, the sea of humanity which formed Raccoon City, shined as many of its residents were in the grasp of slumber. However, it wasn't only humans that were silent. The creatures of the night were strangely absent too. The owl, the wolf and the coyote absent from the normal rhythm of the winter night. The snow creating a layer which muffled any sound that may have been broadcast into the inky blackness. That was until the frantic footfalls shattered the unusual stillness.Marini ran, frantic to get as much distance between him and his pursuer. The low growls were growing closer and faster, narrowing what little precious space there was. His heart sprinted, threatening to erupt from its bony confines if he continued at his current pace. Marini didn't care. Instinct was driving him now. Survival. The most basic of human capacity; one which manifested even with modern advancements and human evolution. One which surfaced when facing imminent danger. Marini was in the fight of his life.He struggled as the snow deepened, losing ground between him and the snarling creature. What started as ankle deep now turned hip deep the further Marini went. He could hear the inhuman snarling and growling as it drew closer. Adrenaline fueled his limbs as desperation flooded his mind. Still, the cop continued, fighting fatigue and the cold. His hands were numb despite the thick gloves shielding his hands from the bone chilling cold, yet he was able to summon the will and strength to grasp the outcrop and begin to climb. His boots finding each tiny jut, hands clutching each jagged shard. Every muscle fiber in his triceps and biceps cried in protest, lactic acid building through every fiber. Enrico refused to yield, determined to elude to his unseen stalker. He kept his focus up and forward, squinting to see the next foothold. His poor human vision was his foe but he didn't let such slow him down. He had to get back to PD. Had to tell the others what he found.Through the silvery streaks of the moon, he felt a sigh of relief as the top of the ledge was coming into sight. Enrico felt his left foot slip against the slick slab.“Shit,” he muttered and fought to keep his hold. Snarling in anger and determination, Enrico shot his right hand up, finding the final crag. His fingers stung as they fastened tight, the only thing keeping the man from falling below. His foot slid again, this time dangling in the air with only his hands and right leg keeping him from tumbling to the earth below and into the waiting jaws of whatever was chasing him.The creature caught the human's scent, darting between the trees and towards the minor clearing. Its sight flawless, able to distinguish shapes even in the poorest of light. It reached the base of the outcrop, licking its lips as it sighted its prey. The human had made it further than expected. It gave off a short snort, as though it was amused by the pathetic attempt at escape. It embedded its curled talons into the rock face, using its powerful legs to propel it vertically, towards the scrambling figure above it.The golden orbs reflected in the light, sending a panic through Enrico. “Fuck,” he swung his leg forward, finding his footing once again. The inhuman growling flooded his ears, triggering his brain to dispatch more adrenaline. His knees ached and feet burned as he neared the summit. The air began to change, a lighter chillier breeze kissed his bare face. Hope. Enrico kept going, ignoring the light scratches at the soles of his boots which grew into deeper longer tears. His foot stomped against the edge, striking back at black furry mass. The continuous grunts and growls drew louder and closer. Enrico reached for the last bit but overreached, finding air where granite should've greeted his touch.“Fuck!” he cried out, flailing his arm. The hold he had began to give, his fingers losing grip and boots sliding down. Realizing he wasn't going to escape, Enrico prepared to fight. Pushing off, the cop aimed his boots for the head of the thing, keeping focus on the molten gold trained on him. If the fucker wanted a fight, it was going to get one. He landed on the thing's head, catching it off guard. Their bodies landed violently into the snow, separating as they touched frozen ground. Enrico rolled to the right, landing on his side as the furry fugly rolled slightly left. The wind was knocked from his lungs, temporarily stunning Enrico. The piercing cold of the winter night shocked him back, bringing the man to his senses. Thinking fast, he grabbed his service weapon and cocking it in rapid time. The creature sprang up, incensed that a human would fight back. Almost all would give up or run, only for it to find them and rip their soft sweet flesh between its perfect canines.Enrico opened fire, striking the shoulders and legs. This only enraged the beast. It rose on its legs, standing like a human.“What the fuck?”He fired again, missing several shots and grazing the left side of the beast's snot. It howled in rage and pain. Enrico took the chance to leap up and make a break for it. He raced back down the trail, seeing his footsteps in the powdery covering. If he could make it to his truck, he'd have a chance. The thunder racing behind him made Enrico move faster, running the fastest he'd have since the military. Adrenaline continued pumping through his veins, numbing him to any pain or injury from the fall. The large oak came into view; the halfway point to his truck. He couldn't scream victory, not just yet. The creature was gaining on him, sprinting on all fours now. Its wounds bleeding but an afterthought. Its focus was on the weak man ahead of it; the one who had succeeded in delivering these very wounds. Its massive claws propelled the towering fur covered body, kicking up snow and creating thick clouds of white in its wake.Enrico heard the thunderous cadence but kept going, twisting his torso to squeeze the remaining rounds from his firearm. The beast lunged, cutting through the air, landing on the man as they reached the large oak.The heavy silence was shattered by shrill screams and piercing cries followed by a triumphant shrill howl. The snow resumed the following day, heavier than before. The Charger rolled to a stop alongside several sheriff's vehicles and one white beat up Ford truck emblazoned with the US Forest Service on the doors.“Shit,” Jettingham muttered as he killed the engine. “This can't be good.”His partner diverted her attention from the phone in her hand, scanning the parking lot. In the summer, this was one of the most popular hiking and day trip spots for people wanting to escape the crushing heat and humidity of the city. In the winter, visitors were sparse, save for the occasional winter hiker or backpacker passing through along the Appalachian Trail.“According to dispatch, a body was found up here by one of the rangers; torn and disemboweled. Think it could be related to those other cases?” The quiet accent pondered.“Sounds like a ranger problem to me,” Jettingham mumbled.“Well, there's a reason we were called in so, I hope you have your thermal underwear on because it's a bit cold out there.”Detective Crispin Jettingham grumbled as he exited the car. His partner right alongside him. They followed the path laid out by law enforcement as to not contaminate any evidence. Jettingham noticed his partner didn't seem phased by the arctic blast which greeted them all, considering she was born in Louisiana and spent part of her life in Charleston. The pair started up the trail, at first noticing nothing out of ordinary. Snow piled up on every surface it could stick to; typical for the time of year. Jettingham would rather be in the warm office, sipping coffee and interrogating suspects.“What the Hell.....” His partner, Alex, gasped. Jettingham snapped from his musings, stopping mid-step.“Crispin, Alex, over here.”“Edward, what are you doing here?” Alex raised an eyebrow as Sergeant Edward Dewey approached. His slick back locks were darted with tiny flakes.“Got called in to cover for Aiken. Out sick,” he looked directly at Alex. “Before we go up there, Alex, there's something you need to know.”“What?” Her face dropped, chest tightened, anxiety beginning to climb.“The victim is someone you know. It's Enrico. I'm sorry, Lex.”Alex stared disbelievingly at her fellow officer. “What did you say?” Her voice a whisper. Jettingham narrowed his eyes at the older man.“I saw Enrico last night before he left. He was fine and going home. He was fine and alive.”Edward extended a hand, leading her by the elbow. Alex let herself be lead up the trail, her partner right behind her. The trail narrowed just before opening up alongside an ancient oak that had been there before the city and area was settled. Blood was sprayed across the pristine white and exposed trees. The ground around their feet turned deep crimson as they came out of the narrow gap. Alex felt her heart racing, body tingling as they came upon the dark blue tarp. It stood out against the wintry scenery, an abomination to the natural beauty of the land.Nearby, a ranger watched as the drama unfolded. The air was saturated with the stench of cold aging blood. It made Piers' nose crinkle in displeasure. He kept his stare trained on the woman as she knelt down, hesitant to lift the corner up. When she mustered the will to do so, he watched her face change from disbelief to shock then grief. Piers watched as the woman screamed then stumbled back, the two men catching her before she stumbled into the snow bank. He continued observing this heartbreaking scene continue to play out. The older man, Edward was his name, had taken the sobbing woman, Alex was her name, in his arms, offering comfort to his anguished friend. The other one, Jettingham, studied the remains. His eyes widened at the state of their now fallen comrade. Piers studied the latter, noting the dark almond eyes ringed with dark violet circles and spiky auburn locks. Several scars marred his face: one across the right cheek and the other running through his left eyebrow. His lips pursed tightly as he lowered the tarp gently back down. The buzzing in his coat pocket pulled him away from the trio a few feet away. He saw the number and quickly answered.“Yeah. I'm here. Confirmed. Truck was found in the next county; torched to the frame. This time, it's a cop, Enrico Marini.”
“Shit. Just what we need. Do we know who is responsible?”
“No, not yet. I'm going to look around see what I can find.”
“Keep me posted.”
Piers slid his phone away, looking up to see the medical examiner arriving on the scene.Jettingham lifted the tape and let Sheva through.“The damned media is at the parking lot. Thankfully, Forest kept them at bay. So, is it true? Is it Enrico?”“I'm afraid so, Sheva,” Jettingham nodded sadly. “His wounds like identical to the other cases we've seen.”“Fuck,” she muttered and pulled up her parka. In the 15 years of working with the dead of Raccoon City, Sheva Alomar had never seen anything like this. Before that, she had been in the Army, serving as a medic then got her degree in Forensic Science. Her eyes had witnessed the carnage and the horrors of war burned into her memory, though, these recent homicides were on another level.“Alex, Edward,” she greeted the others.“Sheva,” Edward greeted with a short nod. Alex wiped her eyes and nodded.“Alex, I am so sorry. I know Enrico was your friend. I promise, I will treat him with all the respect and dignity he deserves.”“Thank you, Sheva. I know you will,” Alex took a deep breath. “I just with I knew why he was here last night. It doesn't make sense. Did they find his truck?”“The sheriff in the next county found it burnt out. Only way they could identify it was through the VIN under the axle. Anything that was in there was gone. Whoever did this, made damn sure nothing would be found or left behind.”
Everyone leaves something behind.......
Alex watched as Sheva gingerly examined Enrico's body. She measured the size and dept of each gash that shredded his torso like tissue paper. His ribs poked through the bits of lung and diaphragm, a sickening gray against the bright ground. Flaps of muscle and skin dangled alongside each tear. Photographs were snapped, documenting the trauma. Sheva mindfully grappled then lifted before turning him over.“Jesus,” Jettingham felt sick. The area where shoulders were supposed to be was gone; ripped away by some sadistic fuck.“What the fuck could do that?” Edward shook his head.“I don't know, Edward, but I'm going to find out,” Sheva continued with her basic examination. “Once we are back at the office, I can conduct a proper investigation. But, I can tell you these injuries are consistent with the ones on the other victims. You may be looking at one perpetrator.”“Great,” Edward groaned. “So now we're looking for the Wolfman?”“I'm going to look around,” Alex left the other two, determined to find something, anything that would point her on the path to the killer. There had to be a reason Enrico was up here. He wasn't one who did random or things on a whim. Alex spotted the footprints in the snow, seeing the tread matched the boots Enrico was wearing in addition to the larger prints created by the responding officers. She followed them across the small clearing, noting the specks of blood that dotted the way. CSU was working the immediate area where the body was found, leaving her to scout ahead. The splatter continued to the base of the small bluff. She paused, studied the prints, then examined the closest grips and crags.“He tried climbing up,” she whispered. “He was trying to escape someone......or something.”Taking out her cell phone, she snapped several photos. It was then she spotted something. Crouching down, Alex took a closer look, using her camera phone for a close up. Was that a paw print? Odd, there were no other paw prints in the snow and these were too large for a coyote, bobcat or mountain lion tracks. This one was too large and not one she had ever seen before. She hastily snapped several shots, including one with a dollar bill alongside it for reference. While she didn't distrust CSU, Alex knew sometimes, things could be easily overlooked or misinterpreted. Her eyes caught the erratic depression in the snow.“He landed here,” she looked around, seeing several partially concealed casings. Pinpricks of rose stained the snowy surroundings. “Ran but fired his gun in an attempt to get away, but.....”Her quiet musings were interrupted by the crunching of boot steps. Alex narrowed her eyes as the ranger, Piers, approached.“Ranger, what can I do for you?”“Couldn't but help to notice you decided to wander away from the rest of the group. Find anything?”“Casings, tracks,” she stayed vague in her reply. “Getting a sense of what may have occurred here. The blood trail continues to that ledge.”Piers nodded, scanning the surroundings behind her. Whatever transpired here had been violent and bloody. At least the foul stench of cold blood was more tolerable here. The refreshing scent of pine now dominated his senses.“Anyway, I'm gonna let CSU know what's over here,” Alex shoved her phone in her pocket, hoping Ranger Piers didn't see what she had been up to. As she started back towards her colleagues, Piers' gaze dropped to the ground, something catching his eyes. He quickly glanced over his shoulder, the cop's focused on the medical examiner. Their indifference to his presence was what he was hoping for. Grabbing handkerchief from his coat, he swooped down, collecting the small tuft of hair which the detective had missed. Hiding the evidence, he walked the perimeter, going to the ledge which gave a commanding view of Raccoon City below. What was it that brought the deceased cop all the way up here?Piers turned his attention up, seeing another clue. Several of the trees were marred with deep rips in the bark; painted with blood. The increasing voices alerted him to the approaching group with Edward leading the way.“Do you need my assistance for anything else?”“No, if we do, we know how to reach you,” Edward shook his head. With one last look cast at Alex, Piers made his way back to the truck. The heavy door of the Chevy creaked and groaned as it swung back. The snow was picking up again; typical for the time of year. Piers retrieved his phone, sighing as he placed the call. It took one ring before it was picked up.
“What did you find out?”
“We have a problem.”Piers heard the rumbling on the opposite end, a sound he was very familiar with. One of displeasure.
“Report back to me here.”
“I did find something before the cops did.”
“Good.”
The connection went dead. Piers fished out his keys and started the aging but still reliable pickup to life. His mind drifted to the pretty detective as he put it in drive and slowly started back towards town.It was close to 9 when the Jeep rolled into the parking lot. Engine killed and lights extinguished before the driver emerged. Alex quietly closed the door and cautiously she began to make the trek back up the trail. She had decided to wait until long after everyone had wrapped up their respective investigations to return. The police tape was still up, a standard practice as part of the ongoing case. The US Forestry service had already placed their barricades and signage up, which she easily maneuvered around. The area was deceptively peaceful, serene, had it not been for the tape and blood which disfigured the landscape. Several more inches had fallen, burying any evidence that may have otherwise been missed. With flashlight in hand, she started where Enrico had fallen. CSU had been meticulous in their canvasing but, even tiny pieces or items get overlooked. Crouching down, a gloved hand methodically swept the fresh powder to the right then left, creating equal mounds. She would pause after each pass, shining her penlight before resuming another round. It took several minutes of achingly slow searching, but Alex found something. Against the deep obsidian and agate was a hair. One single hair. Grabbing the tape and evidence bag from her coat, Alex recalled her CSU training and gathered the lone strand with ease. Her light trained on it to reveal it was coal black in color; a bear perhaps? No, she had seen black bears back in Louisiana and this didn't quite look like it was from Ursus americanus. The shaft was too thick.Quickly, she pocketed her finding and expanded her search. As she continued, Alex instantly shuddered as her pace quickened. She sensed she wasn't alone. The light was snuffed, leaving her at the mercy of the night. Her hand drew her firearm from her hip as her legs lifted her up. She listened, keeping her breathing light, remaining frozen in place. A snarl came from her right, causing her head to snap that way. Another came from the left. Were there more than one? Was it a mountain lion? Bobcat? Wolf? Alex felt felt something rushing her from behind. Thinking fast, she spun around and opened fire. The hulking mass was knocked backwards, stunned at the abrupt counterattack. Alex started for the trail, finding herself in the same situation Enrico had been in. Her feet stormed through the layers of white, breathing now labored as she ran as hard and fast as she could. She was almost to the Jeep, seeing the welcoming outline just ahead.A hand shot out, snagging the thick coat by the hood. The cry of surprised escaped her lips, as her body sailed backwards, the collar of her choke choking her air off as a thick muscular arm secured her by the waist. Fight ignited within her as Alex kicked and punched, her assaults not impairing her attacker. The foul breath coated her face as it dragged her backwards, back to the scene of the crime. As she was unceremoniously thrown to the ground, the sucker punch to her torso took the wind from her lungs.“Now, Diego, there was no need for that.”Alex doubled over, fighting for each breath. Fuck, that was right in the solar plexus. She had not taken a hit like that since the military.“I do apologize for Diego's behavior. Sometimes, he tends to forget his own strength.”The man tilted his head, watching as Alex fought to rise.“And in case you're looking for your firearm, it has been confiscated. Your primitive weapon is ineffective here.”Alex made it to her feet, hands on thighs to muster her breath.“Who......the.......fuck......are......you?”“Oh, where are my manners? My name is Glenn Arias. You've already met Diego.”The hulking form of Diego remained in the shadow, but close to his master. Feral eyes were trained on Alex as she finally stood erect. She couldn't see Arias but could sense he was nearby.“Why are you here? This is an active crime scene. You're trespassing.”Arias chuckled at her bold declaration. “Ah, but, these are also my lands and I was not expecting company this evening.”It was Alex's turn to laugh. “Last time I checked, the US Forest Service was in charge of these forests.”Great, some nut job with a voice like the smoothest whiskey claiming he owned public lands. That's a new one.“Oh, but my dear detective, the United States government is merely a tenant here. You, on the other hand, are the trespasser. I do not tolerate such,” his tone turned ominous.“Buddy, I don't know what fucking game you're playing here, but I'm not in the mood. Now, we can both leave here, I don't report you or your large friend over here and we forget this whole thing happened. Or, I call for backup and you and Diego get to have free room and board at the Raccoon City PD. The choice is yours.”Arias' tone lightened to one of amusement.“You know, I like you, Detective. You are such a breath of fresh air. I was going to kill you but, I changed my mind. I think I'll keep you.”“Keep me? What the Hell do I look like? A stray? No one gets to 'own' me,” she started for her phone in her coat pocket, moving slow to avoid detection. Just a few taps to get Crispin and Marco up here.“If you're thinking of calling for backup, I wouldn't do that. Diego is faster than you give him credit for.”Before she could ask, Diego was on her, pinning her arms behind her back, pulling up for added discomfort. Alex groaned and cried out as her hand opened up, dropping the only link she had to help. She watched in horror as a massive boot crushed the device like a pop can.“As I said, Diego is very fast,” the man approached her. Her poor night vision prevented her from seeing the posh tailored suit with matching vest, button up black silk shirt and sheep skin gloves. His hair was silver like the moon and skin pale.Diego kept Alex restrained as Arias approached, determined to take in his prize. His perfect sight was taken aback by her beauty. Hair like a raven's wings, eyes like glacial waters, skin blessed by the sun with a faint tan and full lips that begged to be tasted. Arias closed the space between them, peeling away a glove so he could have a more intimate encounter. Alex recoiled at the sudden touch of cool fingers brushing across her cheek.“Back off, asshole,” she wrestled against Diego's iron grip which only enraged the larger man. With a loud grunt, her arms were twisted higher, sending bolts of pain though her triceps. Alex yelped, finding resistance earned pained. She hissed through gritted teeth, swearing her arms were going to be pulled out of their sockets.“Your effort is to be admired, my dear, but as you can see, I hold the upper hand,” his thumb stroked along her bottom lip, finding the soft surface pleasant to the touch. It had been too long since he had something soft warm and pliant beneath him. Oh yes, she was going to be fun to break.“Come, Diego, let us go home. I am anxious to get acquainted with this beautiful creature.”As they started their trek back, Arias froze. Diego halted as well with Alex in his grip. Arias scented the air, upper lip curled into a deep snarl.“It appears we have company.”Diego's chest rumbled as he detected the vile invisible odor which offended their senses. Alex felt her captor's body tense, preparing for battle. The first assault came from the left, striking the larger one in the ribs and obliques. Diego howled, releasing Alex from his hold. She darted for a tree, vulnerable without a weapon. All she could do was listen as Arias and Diego were under attack. Whoever they were, it was giving her an opportunity to get the fuck out of there. Alex made a break for it, rushing between the trees, using her pen light to guide her way. Behind her, inhuman growls and the cracking of trees fueled her urgency to get to safety. From behind a rock, a woman stepped out, blocking Alex's way. She shined her light, seeing a slender woman with a shoulder length bob of light blonde locks. Her skin was alabaster and eyes that felt as if they were cutting in Alex's very soul. Her body clad in a skin tight black suit with heeled boots.“Where do you think you are going?” The woman hissed. Alex didn't give her the luxury of an answers, instead rushing at her. The stranger smirked as Alex felt the heel of her boot strike her ribs, cracking several along its path. Her back smacked the boulder, knocking the air from her lungs. Alex was momentarily paralyzed as she slid against the slick stone, wincing with each breath. As the woman rushed her, Alex kicked her right leg out, catching her assailant's lower abs. The blonde stumbled back, the snow challenging her to regain her footing. The detective rolled right, shutting out the pinching of her rib against lung, scurrying to rise before the other one could. The grinding of bone on bone caused her to cry out and clutch her arm across the unseen wound. She watched as her attacker back flipped to her feet, anger chiseled in the silvery features. Alex summoned what bit of will remained, rising to her feet, ready to fight. She bared her teeth and locked in a fighting stance. Fists close to her sides as she readied herself to battle, breath coming out in fast small puffs against the frozen air. Her heart quickened, adrenaline now pulsing through her veins. Pain was an afterthought as she spun around, delivering a hard fist to her foe. The woman felt the heel of her prey's boot collide with her lower back, drawing a small gasp of surprise. Alex charged through the snow, fueled by adrenaline and rage. She leapt forward, taking her taller faster opponent down. They rolled in the snow, trading blows wherever they could strike. Alex felt her teeth cutting her inner cheek, flooding her mouth and splashing her tongue with the familiar iron trickling. Another hit lashed across her left eye, tearing the spot running above and along her eyebrow. A third met her right eye. But Alex refused to give up. She launched her knee into the soft but toned torso, temporarily stunning the one above her. It was enough to give Alex the chance to roll up, fist the skin tight suit, swearing she was also grabbing flesh beneath her grip. Her legs gave her the leverage to lift and hurl the lithe form up and over her. Around her a battle was being waged but her own battle had robbed Alex of what stamina remained within to help. She painfully rolled around then up, seeing the figures of Arias and Diego, who now cradled the woman in his arms, retreating deeper into the mountains. Alex willed her legs to propel up but they resisted. She pressed her hands into the snow, feeling the chilling sting against her palms. It hurt to breathe. Fuck, it hurt to breathe. She sniffled, feeling her eye begin to swell with the dull ache which ignited in the very back of her skull then permeated throughout. It was then she realized she was trembling. But was it from her body losing its boost or the cold? Or was it both. It didn't matter. The pin points of the abyss were gathering in her eyes, lulling her towards its icy embrace. Alex had the get the Hell out of there or wind up being the next stiff on Sheva's table. Letting out a long bellowed cry, she forced her body up, determined to make it out. That was a mistake. The pain assailed her weakened form as she fought to stay upright. Her eyes rolled into her head as her knees buckled and caved, letting her collapse where she stood. That was the last thing she remembered
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The sun streaked through the narrow gap in the curtains, striking Alex in the face. Slowly, she stirred and tried to sit up. The retaliatory jolt of pain from her side made her think twice.“Fuck,” she grabbed her ribs hissing through her teeth, remembering several had been broken in her tussle with that blonde bitch. A few slow deep breaths was what she needed before finding her legs and throwing off the comfortable warm blanket. Wiping her eyes, she took in her latest surroundings. The bed was a queen size, identical to one she owned except, her salary didn't afford the soft posh 1000 thread count that graced the mattress. Even the furniture screamed rich or at least upper class. Or, maybe they were knock offs. Did it matter? She needed to get outta there and let everyone know she was fine. Her clothes were draped on the back of the nearby chair. Alex rose, realizing she was in a pair of boxers and shirt clearly not designed for her. Whoever owned this had to be huge or not. She wasn't going to stick around and find out. As she peeled the top off, Alex spied the bandages wrapped around her midsection. They helped with mobility but didn't kill the pain. How was she going to explain this? Crispin definitely would know she would be lying with any excuse she devised. The guys on the SWAT would know something was up and being to prod her with a million questions. Not to mention Marco would be asking a million questions. She would cross those bridges when she reached them. Alex spotted her reflection in a mirror. She tensed as the banged up woman stared back. There were a few Steristrips across the gash above her eyebrow. Yellow and purple marred the area around her other eye. She lightly touched the puffy bit, wincing at the discomfort this faint caress caused. As she straightened, the bandages which were fastened around her midsection held fast, though the dull ache roared. Her head throbbed from previous evening's combat. She was thankful for still practicing the hand to hand she learned in the military. As she slowly and in excruciating pain, put her clothes back on, Alex realized they were clean. A fresh scent, invigorated her senses, perhaps sandalwood or sage, as she let the long sleeved top slide over her head. Someone took care to take care of her. Putting her boots back on was the hardest as she had to lean over, regardless of how she sat or stood. Hissing through her teeth, she got each one on, exhaling in relief after. Her badge, wallet and keys were on the stand, along with a bottle of Ibuprofen. She down five without water, took the bottle with her and slowly crept towards the door. Alex paused, listening for voices, footsteps or any noise that would betray someone's presence. With busted ribs and rising headache, Alex made her way for the stairs. There was one door to her left then another to the right, both closed. She was grateful for the carpeting as it masked her steps as she reached the first step.“Where do you think you're going?” Fuck. Alex put her foot down and spun on her heels, refusing to give the voice an answer. She straightened up, but immediately realized she was outsized. The man had to be at least six feet with dark brown hair close cut. The scruff of a beard covered the lower part of his face giving him something of a five o' clock shadow. He was dressed in a gray shirt that looked like it was struggling to fit across his broad chest and shoulders. His torso created a v-shape that vanished into tactical pants held up by a belt. Everything fit in all the right places. A little too well. And his biceps, well, those had to be inhuman in size. Could be hitting the roids. As she stood there, a favorable scent tantalized her senses. Could be aftershave or cologne. But it was the eyes. Deep rings that were pulling her in, blurring the world around her, causing her pulse to quicken just slightly. Alex didn't blink until the man spoke up again.“You didn't answer my question.”“None of your damn business, that's where,” Alex snorted and turned her back on the man. A large strong hand curled around her bicep, halting her mid step. “Let go of me now.” Her tone turned threatening. The man chuckled and yanked her back, causing Alex's back to collide against the solid wall of his chest. Stubborn this one was. “You're in no shape to go anywhere. In case you forgot, you have several broken ribs. Not to mention, you have no idea where you are.”Her stomach growled, killing the tension between them. The man laughed before releasing her arm.“I haven't forgotten,” Alex slowly exhaled “Now, let me go.”“Chris!” He had a name. A second man emerged from below and started up the stairs. His was much smaller than Hulk but the cobalt tee and jeans revealed the man did partake in some form of physical activity. His sandy blonde hair fell in front of one eye which he pushed aside. He froze seeing Alex in Chris's hold. She was in a defensive stance, ready to counterattack at a moment's notice.“She was still asleep when I checked on her” the man sighed and crossed his arms. “I'm sorry I didn't catch her.”“Don't worry about it, Leon. She wouldn't have gone far anyways.”“Will someone PLEASE tell me where the HELL I am?”“Safe,” Leon huffed and crossed his arms. “If we hadn't arrived when we did, you would've been Arias' latest play thing.”Alex narrowed her eyes, taken aback at the mention of the man she encountered last night. “Wait, you know that guy?”“We're not Facebook friends or meet up at Starbucks for coffee and gossip if that's what you're thinking.”“Look, why don't you come downstairs, have something to eat? We can explain everything,” Chris offered. Her cop instincts screamed to fight, run, to get the Hell out of there. But, common sense said, she was outnumbered and unarmed. She had one behind her and one in front of her. The dull ache in her upper torso only compounded her current dilemma.“I need to call my job and let them know I'm alright. I'm sure my partner has been blowing up my now destroyed phone. Let me do that and I'll go downstairs.”“Deal,” Chris handed his phone over. “I hope the wrap job is sufficient in keeping those ribs stable. It's been a while since I had to do any first aid.”“It'll suffice,” Alex quickly dialed her partner's number.Panicked would've been an understatement. Chris and Leon could hear Alex's partner reading her the riot act. The facial expressions she made told them she was probably in deep shit with the boss as well.
“WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN!?!?”
“Long story.”
“WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN IT'S A LONG STORY!?”
“My phone got broken okay? I haven't had a chance to get a new one yet. Will you cut me some fucking slack, Crispin?” Alex pinched the bridge of her nose.
“MARCO TRIED CALLING AND WANTED TO GO LOOKING FOR YOU!!”
“Tell him to relax. We're not in a relationship anymore so he doesn't have to drop everything when I don't answer the damn phone. I can handle myself.”Leon caught Chris bristling at the name. Gold flashed where brown had been. His upper lip snarled with peaks of canines barely visible. A swift kick knocked Chris back to his senses. They didn't need her to panic.“Look, Crispin, just, just let everyone know I'm fine. I'm gonna take some sick leave for a few days. And tell Marco to cool his heels, please.”Alex ended the call and fell back into the chair, covering her face with both hands.“Here,” a plate was slid in front of her.“Thanks,” she grabbed the fork and knife. “I'm sorry you had to hear that. My partner can be.....protective."Damn, the eggs and bacon were great. Definitely needed after the previous night. Alex didn't realize how hungry she was until she was grabbing several strips of bacon and another heaping spoonful of fluffy eggs.Chris finished off his coffee and shook his head. “For now, you need to stay put. It's for your own safety.”Alex's face froze mid chewing. She swallowed the food in her mouth before speaking up. Her face darkened as she challenged Chris.“My own safety? What's that supposed to mean? I can take care of myself. Not to mention, I have a job. I can't just go on radio silence.”Chris and Leon traded looks.“Glenn Arias is dangerous,” Chris shook his head. His eyes bore down into hers, gauging her reaction. Before he could speak again, the door flung open and a tall, solid built blonde man waltzed through. He was clad in tactical pants, maroon shirt that clearly was one size too small, and flashed a shit eating grin that made Alex roll her eyes. “I see our guest is up and moving,” he pulled out the last chair, spinning it around so he could rest his arms on the top. He tilted his head and sized Alex up. She stared back, hardening her eyes. The man chuckled and accepted the mug Leon held out.“You said you would have answers for me. Like why was my crime scene being trespassed by some guy claiming those were his lands and had the Hulk for a sidekick. And let's not forget the psychotic bitch who beat the shit out of me,” she gestured at her side with the broken ribs, “ I've been a pretty good sport this morning considering I was manhandled by him,” her finger pointed straight at Chris, “after waking up in a house, in clothes that weren't mine. So will someone PLEASE tell me what in the HELL is going on?”“You're frustrated,” Chris nodded. “You do deserve answers. What do you remember about last night?”“I went back to the site, trying to find more evidence. I'm sure it hit the news what happened.”“It did,” Leon slid a plate in front of Chris. “I'm sorry about what happened.”“I went up there and that's when Arias showed up. I didn't hear him. I never heard any snow crunching or any indication of how he got there. His buddy, Diego is what he called him, smashed my phone and my gun was lost. He said that he was going to kill me but then changed his mind and was going to keep me. So, who wants to start talking?” Alex sat back, crossing her arms over her chest, switching her stare between Chris and Leon.“It started when you were still there in the daylight,” Chris started.
The Previous Day......
His mind drifted to the pretty detective as he put it in drive and slowly started back towards town.Chris stared at the headline. Another death. This time, it was a cop. A cop found in the Arklay Mountains. The injuries were the same as the ones found on the other victims. It had to be a rogue. He had dealt with rogues in the past and the ending was the same. Trouble was, they didn't know who it was and if it was one, they had no ties to any pack. And that was the dangerous part about a rogue. “Any leads?” He peered over the screen. Jack paused in the archway, shaking his head.“No, whoever it is, is covering their tracks. They're smart. Not like the others. The scent isn't anything I've come across or recognize.”“Or someone is helping them,” Chris growled. "Possible they are masking the scent in someway."“Who would wanna help a rogue?”“Good question,” the older man nodded. “But, Piers found something up in the mountains. Got it before the cops spotted it.”“Maybe it's a newbie and they can't control themselves. We've seen that happen before.”“Maybe....But,” Chris shook his head, “Something tells me that's not the case. A fucking cop in the mountains. A lawyer found ripped to shreds in their home. A graduate student who was walking home on campus. There has to be a connection. In our world, there's always a connection. And that connection always seems to lead back to Arias.”The door opened then closed. The steady steps told them both it was Piers.“Chris, Jack,” the younger man acknowledged.“What did you find?” Chris got straight to the point. No time for small talk. Piers retrieved the cloth and passed it over. Chris uncovered the hairs recovered, growling at the realization growing inside.“That's not all. There's a detective, a woman. She knew the dead cop. Caught her poking around. May need to keep an eye on her.”Chris looked up from the hairs between his fingers. He raised an eyebrow.“What are ya gonna do Piersie? Babysit?” Jack teased.“Fuck off, Krauser,” Piers rolled his eyes then bared his canines. “You want some nosy human to find out about us?”Jack shrugged. “What's got your panties in a bunch, Piers? Besides, we can always do things my way.”“That's your answer to everything!” Leon groaned.“What? Dead humans don't talk,” Jack flashed his brilliant smile.“Dead humans also mean more humans,” Piers snarled baring his canines at Jack who bared his in kind.“Enough!” Chris felt his patience fading. Some days, he felt like he was a damn babysitter “Jack, no killing. Piers, trail this cop, see what she does and where she goes. It's possible she leads us to the rogue. Leon, follow up with your contacts in the RCPD. Maybe this Marini knew something. It doesn't matter if it's the last place he ate at or who he saw.”“Got it,” he nodded. Jack pouted which Leon affectionately patted his cheek. “Cheer up, big guy, you'll get your chance soon enough.”Leon felt Jack relax against his touch. He always had that effect on him; lulling the beast within. Still, Jack grunted in displeasure.Piers sat in his truck, listening to the chaos inside the station. News of Enrico's death had created an uproar of distress among the ranks. It wasn't exclusive to the humans. Whispers, rumors of a rogue stalking the area had other packs on high alert. Chris had been on edge to put it lightly. He had departed, hoping to catch their unseen foe's trail. Stressed would be an understatement in describing their leader's current state of mind. It weighed heavily on each member. Piers' mind went back to the cop. He felt sympathy for her. Losing someone you loved burned a hole in your soul. A hole that didn't heal. To this day, he still felt the old familiar sting when his mind went to Merah.
“Watch over Chris......”
Her dying words echoed in his ears. She had perished in his arms as the hollow point silver bullet filled with Northern Monkshood pierced her heart. It had been a cold January day, much like the one now. His fingers slid beneath the thick sweater, seeking the medallion around his neck. Merah had given it to him as a gift. Piers never took it off. It was the only physical link he had left. He felt the tears threatening to prick the corners of his eyes. A part of him wondered if he would every be happy again.Blinking hard and shaking his head, Piers retrained his focus on the building before him. He could hear the detective as she raced up several flights of stairs, darted down a hallway then locked a door.Alex didn't want anyone to bother her. She found an empty office, locked the door and closed the blinds. She didn't need anyone's sympathy or condolences. They were nothing more than gilded words which lay hollow inside. Marco had been looking for her, asking Crispin where she was. Once they returned to the station, Alex had made a hasty retreat before her ex flame could spot her. She knew Crispin would run interference for her. It wasn't that she wanted to evade Marco, no, he was one of the few people she could rely on. No, she had to process this in her own way. The office had a desk and chair. That was all she needed. Alex dropped into the chair, a loud groan exhaled from the seat. Silence filled the room, except for her heart which thundered loudly in her ears.It had not been fully absorbed by her mind. No, Alex felt nothing at this point. Reality had not violently collided with her yet, but it was a matter of time. Wasn't that some part of the grieving process? Looking around, she realized this had been an office for Enrico at one time. She recognized the stain on the wall where he had tripped and fell, spilling his coffee across the carpet and yellowing peeling paint. Irons didn't allow for any repairs. It was temporary anyways. Irons, what a fucking dick. Probably doesn't give a shit Enrico was gone. Probably more worried about a vacancy he had to get filled. Fucking oaf. Alex shook her head, refusing to let that bastard pollute her mind. Instead, she opted to rifle through the drawers and filing cabinets that remained. She started with the center. Any distraction was welcome. The opening and closing of sticking drawers continued for about 15 minutes, unearthing nothing of interest. Alex leaned back in the chair, kicking the desk with her heel. A small gesture of anger, nothing more. Taking a deep breath, she shut her eyes and blocked the outside world. Not even 5 minutes had passed and her phone was going off. Huffing in annoyance, she reluctantly answered.“Yeah.”
“Where are you? No one's seen you since this morning.”
“I needed some time to myself that's all.”
“Well, Sheva called. She's waiting on blood work and toxicology but found something while examining Enrico's injuries.”
“I'll be right there,” she hung up and started her way back. The office was abuzz with activity. Phones were ringing non-stop as everyone took down potential leads. Voices of various octaves and volumes clamored among one another while others scurried from desk to desk. Crispin had the receiver glued to his ear, hastily jotting down what she figured what would be another dead end lead. His face was a bit flush, flustered from the endless parade of calls and reports.“Looks like Irons is breathing down everyone's neck.”Alex turned around to see Marco standing behind her. While he had transferred to the bomb squad a year ago, he still stayed in touch with the crew.“Hey, I'm sorry about Enrico,” he placed a supportive hand on her shoulder. His eyes reflected deep sympathy. “I know you two were close.”“Yeah,” Alex nodded. Marco could only squeeze her shoulder, unsure of what else to say.“Look, I just want you to know if you need anyone to talk to or anything at all, I'm here. All you have to do is call. I don't care what time or day it is. I mean, we're not together anymore but, I still care about you. A lot.”She forced a smile and nodded again. “Thanks, Marco.”Crispin hung up the phone, relieved to end that 10 minutes of random tangents and theories about how aliens were involved in the murders and they were part of a larger scheme to take over the planet. Why did he get the crazy ones? He looked up, seeing Alex and Marco talking with Marco resting a hand on her shoulder. Crispin sat, watching them interact for a moment. It had been hard to watch them fall apart. The stretches of depression, drinking tossed in with periods of Alex throwing herself into her work, sleeping at the station for days at a time. Marco had not fared any better. JJ and Dylan had found him at his apartment, refusing to get out of bed, unkempt and disheveled, reeking of unwashed skin. Crispin had been called in to help, dragging the heartsick man from the soiled bedding and into the shower. Marco had been a damn dead weight, dragged by three full grown men and hosed down like an invalid. He had not resisted their efforts to rehabilitate his mind and soul but didn't put any desire forth in getting better either.“Well, I better get back. I was only wanting to stop by and see you, make sure you were alright.”“Right,” Alex covered her hand with his. “Crispin said Sheva had something for us. Guess I better get going.”As she started to pull away, Marco threw his arms around her. Alex couldn't but help to return his gesture, securing her arms around his waist. She let herself relax in his embrace, her mind treading into dangerous waters.“I'll call you later tonight,” he whispered in her ear before letting her go. Alex simply nodded and watched him turn and head back to the bomb squad. Some days, she wondered what if.....“He's worried about you,” Crispin walked up to his partner.“He doesn't have to be. We're not together anymore. I'm one less thing to worry about.”“Thing? Alex, for five years, you were not a thing to him. You were one another's world.”“Crispin, why are we having this discussion? Shouldn't we be going to see Sheva?”Piers wondered who Marco was. It was clear he and the lady cop were in a serious relationship but ended. Not that it was his concern. He watched as Alex and Crispin made their way down the stairs, heading to one of the Impalas the department issued to detectives. As they pulled out from the parking lot, he slowly tailed several car lengths behind. He kept his pace, never losing sight of the silver car as it turned into the parking garage. He quickly followed, finding a place at the end of the opposite row. He waited until the pair passed by then hopped out of the truck. It would be easy to slip inside. Humans were hyper focused on their own business no one would notice the young man nonchalantly entering the door for the ME's office. His heightened olfactories directed him to the basement level where the medical examiner occupied the entire floor. The shadow of death clung precariously, touching every surface. Formaldehyde, ammonia, bleach and soap intermingled and danced, invisible to the weaker noses of humans. Piers was not a fan of such places but understood the need. It used to be Lycans didn't have to be bothered with concerns about science or forensics. But, as humans grasped a deeper understanding of the microscopic universe, superstition was replaced with reason and evidence. As humans evolved scientifically, so did his kind. They adapted to the changing world, embracing technology and methodologies which served to keep them invisible, as they liked it.He found a side door which read ME Office. Piers didn't see any cameras as he found the door unlocked. Even in this age, humans still held a degree of trust and honor among themselves. Piers slipped inside, flipping on the light. He wasn't sure what he was searching for, but knew when he saw it he would know. Time was against him and Piers had to move fast.“Alex, Crispin,” Sheva greeted the pair.“Sheva,” Crispin smiled and greeted their friend.“So, I finished the examination on Enrico and found several of these,” Sheva flashed a small Ziplock bag with several hairs within.“What are these,” Crispin examined the small bag.“Upon initial examination, animal hairs. But, these are not like any animal I have seen.”“What do you mean?” Alex held the bag up to the light. Each shaft was thick, unlike anything she had seen on a dog or a cat.“I have examined many wounds from animal attacks and this does not match any apex predator that resides in the mountains; or in any mountain range for that matter. I sent several of them off for further testing. It will take some time as the lab is backed up. I did take a closer look at the wounds Enrico sustained during the attack.”She pulled back the drape just enough to reveal the cleaned gashes across his torso. Alex felt her breath hitching in her throat.“A brown bear's claw marks are about one and half inches deep. A grizzly would leave marks about two to four inches. However, in the case of our mystery attacker” Sheva kept her index finger hovered above the furthest left rip, “the depth is about 5 inches, indicating longer sharper claws which tore at the skin and muscle. Mountain lions have significantly shorter claws as well, ruling them out as the suspect.”“So our perp is the big bad wolf?” Crispin arched an eyebrow.“Or somebody's running around with a Freddy Krueger claw.”“I do not think so, Alex. Those blades are not serrated or jagged, but smooth,” both detectives gave a bewildered look to which Sheva merely smiled. “I have seen Nightmare on Elm Street. Josh made me watch it one night.”“Ah,” Crispin nodded.“Anyway, the tears started on the upper part of the torso before dragging across to the oblique muscles. Do you notice anything about the marks?”Alex and Crispin studied the shredded tissue, clueless as to what they should been seeing.“There are five marks. Bears and mountain lions have four on each paw.”“Are you saying this was a person who did this?”“At this point, I cannot be certain what did this. I am certain it was not a bear or mountain lion.”“And wolves have not been seen in the Arklay Mountains for almost 100 years,” Alex added.“Once the lab results come back on those hairs, perhaps a better idea of what we are up against will surface.”Piers finished snapping photos of the reports from the previous homicides. He didn't have time to analyze every document but, this was the next best thing. He hastily stuffed the forms back in their folders then returned the office to its previous condition before he retreated. He heard the trio wrapping up their conversation and made a hasty retreat from the elevator.“Keep us posted if you find anything else.”“Of course,” Sheva placed a hand on her friend's arm. “And please, do not lose faith. I know this is a hard time for you. Eventually, the one responsible will be found and pay.”“I hope you're right,” Alex sighed.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The Night Before......
Alex waited a few hours after sunset before heading out. Marco had called her an hour before, offering to come over so she wasn't alone.
“Marco, I'm fine. I just need to be alone.”
“I can be there in 10 minutes.”
“No, don't worry about me, please? I'm gonna soak in the shower then try to get some sleep.”
He continued to plead with her but Alex was not about to back down. Marco would insist on joining her, determined to help her; anything to be close to her again.
“Look, I'll be back by Monday. It's been a long day and I'm really drained.”
Alex had winced when the disappointment lined his response.
“Alright, fine. But, I don't care what time it is, if you need anything, I don't care how small it is, call me.”
Even after their relationship had fallen apart, Marco still loved her. And she would be lying to herself if she claimed to not still have a place in her heart for him. It still hurts to think about it. She wouldn't admit such to anyone. After what happened, Alex had shut down, closing Marco out, closing the world out, leading to her heart-wrenching decision to end things. Then, she had turned to the bottle as her coping mechanism, which had earned her multiple nasty hangovers. Dylan had snapped her out of that little downward spiral, refusing to see her go the same way his father had: drunk and belligerent.Marco didn't deserve how she treated him but it was her burden to bear. She felt her pulse quicken and the old familiar sting in her chest as that painful memory scratched at the back of her mind. Alex squeezed her eyes closed and curled her hands into a tight set of fists, refusing to let the past surface. No, it had to stay in the past, buried.Shaking her head, Alex grabbed her weapon, coat and keys. The snow had stopped, for the time being as she arrived at the trail head. The police tape, barricades and signage from the rangers were easy to circumvent. They were more for discouraging the public as it was still an active crime scene. She clicked on the light, keeping it trained on the path before her. The search was going to be slow and challenging with the night sky, but, Alex refused to surrender. Enrico would do the same for her. Taking a deep breath, she began the search. Her mind swirling around the few hairs which sat in the evidence bag nestled safely in her coat pocket. It was then her thoughts were halted by the low growl coming from somewhere in the dark. She was not alone.Chris and Jack had gone ahead, shifting as they leapt from the truck. The pickup dropped then sprung violently upright as the pair made their hasty exits. Clothing fluttered across thePiers and Leon continued behind, watching the massive forms vanish into the tree line.“You think Arias is up there?” Leon checked his weapon, ironic considering he could take out a man Jack's size with a well placed blow.“I wouldn't put it past him. I bet he's the one behind all the murders,” Piers slammed the steering wheel, eyes glowing gold against the inky blackness. They didn't need the assistance of headlights as humans depended upon, which provided additional cover for their attack.“Having a rogue on the payroll would be to his advantage.”“Or they're getting something else out of the deal,” Piers' grip tightened on the wheel as they reached the parking lot. The air carried the sounds of war, delivering urgency to the pair as they rushed from the truck and towards the battle.Diego hurled Jack through the air, charging after the sailing form of fur and flesh. The Lycan had leapt on his back, sinking its long razor sharp claws straight into his deltoids, blood spilling between fang and flesh. Jack shook off the assault, baring his deadly teeth as the behemoth came head on towards him. Jack crouched, accepting the challenge. Leon felt the Lycan within him charging to the surface as saw his partner fighting tall dark and dumb. No way was he getting to have all the fun to himselfChris and Arias circled around one another. The smirk graced Arias' lips as Chris snarled, flashing his canines at his ancient foe.“Your posturing does nothing to scare me, mutt,” Arias hissed. The Lycan surged forward, arms out with claws poised to rip its prey apart. Arias was faster. He propelled his body up the nearest tree, using his leg and torso as leverage to move as one. The tip of his boot collided with the creature's head, violently snapping it to the left. He landed with cat like ease, grinning at the blood running down the side of his nemesis' face then advanced for another attack. This time, Arias vaulted over and onto Chris' back, sinking his blade into the Lycan's side until only the hilt was visible. Chris howled in pain, snatching part of Arias' jacket in his frantic swiping to get the vampire off him. Arias held on, entangling his gloved hands deeper into the rich coarse fur. His heels dug into the sides, making a point to hit where his blade was still embedded. Chris charged backwards, slamming the smaller man into the nearest tree. Arias felt his body cracking between the thick unforgiving pine and the Lycan's solid frame, still, he remained steadfast, tightening his hold even more. His vision caught movement from the right. It was Piers. Arias chuckled at this display, anticipating the smaller creature's next move. It was endearing, really. Piers propelled off the ground, focused on the silver haired assailant on his Alpha's back. Arias waited just as Piers was inches from the pair. He made his move, leaping off Chris just as Piers slammed into Chris. The speed and power behind his assault brought both Lycans to the ground. Arias took off.Leon darted around and between Diego and Jack, giving the latter time to regroup. Diego had Jack pinned down against a boulder, treating him like a punching bag. The sudden appearance of the smaller beast caught Diego by surprise, temporarily pulling his attention away from Jack, who seized the opportunity to return the favor in kind. His sharp claws slashed across the other's face, forcing Diego to cover his face with an arm. He howled in pain but continued to lash out, hoping he would strike the pair.“Diego, Maria,” he barked with urgency. Father and daughter retreated, following Arias into the night.Chris, having shifted back to human form, gripped the handle of Arias' blade. The blast across his heated flesh was shut out as the adrenaline worked to dull the pain. Every millimeter was excruciating as the silver dagger was expelled from his flesh. He couldn't hold back the deep animal growls and groans, letting them go until his body was free of that offensive weapon. Piers grimaced at the sounds as he scanned the area. His eyes landed on the still form of the cop he had been trailing all day. He raced over, seeing she was unresponsive. The blood smeared across her forehead had dried, making him think of makeup or paint. Her eye was starting to show signs of bruising, courtesy of a well place fist. Maria had been vicious in her attack yet, the woman had succeeded in fighting back, delivering a few blows herself.“Fucking Arias,” Chris watched as his side began to knit itself together. It would take a day, but, still significantly faster than a human but would leave a scar nonetheless. That was the issue with silver: it scarred their kind when it didn't kill them. His eyes narrowed as he examined the dagger. Pure silver blade and simple handle.“Chris,” Piers was kneeling in the snow with Alex's head in his lap. He hurried over, seeing her in the snow, bloody and broken. “She's still alive.”Chris knelt, looking over the unconscious human. Her breathing was slightly erratic and wheezy when she inhaled. Could have internal injuries. They wouldn't know until they got her somewhere safe. He knelt down, gathered her up in his arms, saying nothing to Piers as he started back. Jack and Leon had gone ahead, ensuring the bloodsucking trio had fled the area.Jack and Leon were waiting by the truck when Piers and Chris returned. Both having slid on some clothing. The blonde raised an eyebrow as he spotted the bundle in Chris' arms.“We're bringing home strays now?” Jack quipped.“She comes with us,” Chris' voice held a finality which Jack merely nodded. The underlying meaning was clear enough: Leave the human and she faces a fate worse than death at Arias' hands.“She looks pretty banged up,” Leon caught the injuries on her face.“She comes with us,” Chris' voice had softened but held firm, leaving no room for the others to protest. He curled his arms tighter, drawing the human into his embrace. “She may know something.”Chris held Alex in his arms the entire way, his focus on her. He swept a few hairs from her face, allowing him to get a better view. Her scent drew him in, something earthen which radiated from her chilled skin. He warned himself to not get close anyone as attachments would only weigh him down and serve as a weakness for Arias to exploit. Still, he found himself pulling her closer until she was resting against his chest, sheltered by his arms. Chris couldn't explain it, except he felt a pull, no, a need to do so. His nose buried in the crook of her neck, staying there for the entirety of the ride.A tiny whimper escaped her lips when she stirred, her face scrunched in pain. His hand came to rest along her cheek. Piers would glance up in the rear view mirror, catching brief glimpses of Chris interacting with the human. He wouldn't say anything, instead continue to focus on following Leon and Jack who were driving her Jeep. Chris remained silent the rest of the ride back, keeping his focus on the cop, listening to her breathing and heart. He had yet seen any human go against Maria and live. Few had come close.
Present Time.....
Alex sat mute. Her fingers drummed along the table, eyes trained on Chris. Tension filled the room as she leaned back and crossed her arms.“You expect me to believe vampires and werewolves are real?”“Lycans,” Piers bristled at the label.“Fine, I'll play, Lycans. So what, you guys cosplay Underworld on weekends?”“No,” it was Jack's turn to seethe. This human didn't realize how insulting she was being. “We don't cosplay anything. You have no idea what's out there. You humans are so wrapped up in your own little lives, marching on like worker ants from work to home, blissfully ignorant to the real world.”“Then why don't you explain what that real world is?”“Time out,” Chris rose, halting any further exchange. “Look, Alex, is it? What you saw last night was not a hallucination or some costume play. There's a war that's been waging for a very very long time; one that Glen Arias is determined to see the vampires win by any means.”“Wait,” Alex pinched the bridge of her nose. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. “That guy and his posse are vampires? Why didn't you just hurl some holy water or garlic at them?”“It's not that easy,” Chris shook his head. “Stoker and European folklore get it wrong. Silver is deadly to them but they can exist in daylight. That much, Stoker got right. Forget everything Hollywood has fed you. All works of humans either drunk or high when they devised those tales. Vampires don't need coffins but do need blood for sustenance. They can't shape shift. They do posses inhuman strength and speed.”“What about Lycans?” Alex took another drink of coffee with Leon refilling her mug. She was going to need more for this.“We can shift at will. We're not at the mercy of the moon but certain times can affect us greatly. We can follow a human scent for miles, even if the human passed through days before. We eat and drink as humans do. We enjoy the same pleasures as humans.”Alex shuddered as the word pleasures rolled off his tongue and crossed her legs, squeezing her thighs tight.“If you can shift at will, prove it. I'm a cop. Need to see the proof.”“Very well,” Chris stood, planting his palms on the table. Alex felt her heart come a violent stop as her mind fought to digest what her eyes were showing her. Where skin was now fur like midnight covered every inch. The sharp snap of bone caused her to wince as they reshaped his body. Nose and mouth elongated as the ivory points protruded from his upper lip. Eyes flashed like molten gold, honing in on the bewildered human as if to say, satisfied?“Holy shit,” she stumbled to rise only for the chair to tip back, taking her with it. The back of her head smacked the Formica flooring, an immediate surge beginning at the base of her skull. Piers and Leon rushed to her side, helping her up. Jack laughed. Pain in the ass humans.Alex winced and pressed her hand to the spot that met unforgiving floor. Leon grabbed some ice, making a makeshift ice bag for her. “Thanks,” she applied it to the aching spot. As her hair swept to the side, the younger Lycans saw it. Both cast curious stares which Jack effectively silenced with his own look.Chris resumed his human guise and sat calmly, hands neatly interlinked as Alex regained her seat and composure. She had seen some crazy shit in combat, but this, this surpassed everything.“Holy shit,” she whispered. He slowly shook his head, keeping his gazed locked with hers, observing the shock slowly ebb from her eyes. Those rich cerulean rings. “Holy shit,” she chanted, attempting to comprehend what she witnessed. A part of her was in absolute disbelief. She was still asleep, this was one giant waking nightmare and she needed to wake the fuck up and fast.“You're not hallucinating or dreaming,” Jack knew what she was entertaining. “Get used to it.”“I need to get home,” she stood but found her knees buckling. Alex braced herself on the table, remembering the breathing techniques she learned as part of her therapy to regain control over her body. Her mind honed on the deep rhythm of inhaling then slowly exhaling.“Not alone,” Chris rose. “Arias caught your scent and didn't kill you. He wants you. He won't stop until he's made you his.”“So what, you're gonna babysit me? As I said before, I can handle my own.”“Had we not shown up and saved your ass last night, you'd be Arias' little plaything right now,” Jack snarled.“Jack,” Chris shot him a look, silencing the blonde then turned his attention back to her. Alex caught the slight wince and slump in his broad shoulders. The shadow of humiliation crossed his scarred face.“Look, you're not going to be alone. Arias will find a way to use you against us. He doesn't only want to exterminate our kind. He wants to make humans the vampires' slaves. Walking blood bags whose only purpose is to serve their undead masters in every way imaginable. So all those people you work with, people you love and people you don't know are in his sights.”Alex thought about the crew. The idea of Crispin, Dylan, JJ and Marco being some walking blood bank for Arias' kind made the food in her stomach curdle, causing it to churn. No, she couldn't have that burdened on her conscious.“Fine,” she set the cloth down.“Good,” Chris let a faint smile curl up his lip.Alex kept her eyes forward. Her lower body ached the entire way home. What did that bitch do to her? Chris captured side glances of the human as her jaw would tense then relax, not making it any easier for what he had to tell her. The revelation of the existence of vampires and Lycans had shocked her, which was to be expected. But, she didn't race out the door or try to throw blades at them as some humans had attempted in the past. A minor victory but a victory.“I need to grab some stuff,” she huffed, heading down the hall then to left, leaving Chris alone in the living room. It was sparsely decorated. A few commendations hung on the wall. No family photos to be seen. A few photos of a military unit and what appeared to be her and several individuals in police uniforms accentuated one wall. He stepped closer, studying the uniformed personnel. It had been taken overseas; Iraq based on the background and year. She and Jack would get along as he had been on multiple deployments himself. Well, if he can stop being an asshole for at least five minutes. As he stood there, waiting on her, the previous night's events played out in his mind.
The Previous Night....
It would be his room where she would rest. Chris had dismissed the others, leaving him alone with her. His hand attentively swept the dried blood from her forehead and cheek, lingering a little longer than necessary. The swelling and discoloration increased where Maria had belted her in their skirmish. He growled at the vision of that bitch laying a hand on her.“Snap out of it,” he admonished himself before disinfecting the scrape and applying the Steri strips. The ribs needed to be wrapped. During the drive back, he had felt the faint cracks along the bony strips. They would need to be wrapped and stabilized, which meant removing her clothing. Sure, it was nothing. She was just a human, the mantra chanted repeatedly in his mind as he dropped the wet boots unceremoniously to the floor. The socks went next leading to the soiled soaked denim. Chris slid the top up, accidentally brushing across her abs. He shuddered at the fleeting connection, finding himself desiring more.“She's nothing, just a human,” he heard himself mutter as he popped the button and slowly drew the zipper down. Her scent was growing stronger, harder to shut out. His body stiffened as his canines slid down. Rings of gold shimmered in the soft lamp light. No! No! No!
Yes.....
The dark tone rumbled in his mind. Chris shut the voice down, peeling the filthy garment over her hips and down her legs. They were shapely, signs of physical activity in the subtle flexing and relaxing. Her scent continued to fill his senses, rapidly overpowering his control. Chris curled his hands into a set of taut fists, straining to retain his composure. Instinct was beginning to win out. Instinct he had successfully quelled for so long. Chris felt his hands and arms turning Alex on her side, hand sweeping the rich chocolate strands aside. The nape of her neck beckoned him close, flawless and inviting. His breathing quickened to short heavy puffs, sweat beading across his forehead. His mouth opened, canines bared, aching to taste the sweet fruit before them. Chris felt like a passenger in his own body as his Lycan side took what it wanted. He felt himself leaning in, inhaling deeply as lip and the needle sharp tips slid down until they reached the promised land. The soft skin punctured easily, just enough to create his claim. The tiny beads of iron sweetness danced across his tongue, electrifying his body. The tip of a canine pierced his own lip, delivering the wound with his own blood, letting his tongue push it deeper into the puncture wounds, pausing over the bite to ensure the creation of their bond.Chris flung his head back, the crimson treat trickling down his throat before diving in and tenderly licking the wound. His Lycan side continued with its explorations, fully emerging until all human traces vanished. Chris felt his clothes rip away, body growing as bone snapped and morphed. Dark fur sprouted as the impressive snout nuzzled her partially clothed body, spreading his scent across her skin. His thick tongue darted out, tasting the soft skin against it. The beast shuddered at the sweet nectar teasing his senses. Golden rings watched as her body reacted to this invasion, tensing then relaxing before a tiny whimper escaped her lips. The powerful frame knelt on the bed, towering over her smaller one, rolling her on her stomach. Still, she didn't move. His clawed hand pawed at the waistband of her underwear, leaving the human bare, open and at the Lycan's mercy. Her scent driving him to the brink of madness. The the faint light of the tiny lamp cast a soft, ethereal glow across her naked body; an offering. One the monster above couldn't leave unclaimed. The human lay motionless, unaware of what was occurring. Thick claws curled around her hips, drawing them up and out as the thick bulbous cock, weeping and angry, forced its way past the slick fold. A tiny shiver of anticipation raced down her unconscious body as the twitching member eased inside the welcoming tight hole. The thick heat penetrated her body, brushing the along the slick walls until hips were flush with her ass. The Lycan drew back then snapped against her, violently shaking the bed beneath them causing the headboard to smack against the wall. The tiny cries escaped her lips, turning louder and longer as his thrusts turned harder and faster. One thought dominated the beast's mind.
Mate
Their bodies continued the primal dance, the Lycan sensing his end was near. The knot at the base of his cock swelled, catching against her now swollen entrance. Her cries increased, praises of his actions, driving him harder and deeper. His nails pressed deeper into the fleshy part of her hips, keeping her in place as his climax slammed his mind and body. The low growl rumbled through his chest as he felt his knot locking them together. The soaked walls of his mate squeezed and rubbed against his sensitive member, drawing the thick waves of seed out. Alex, lost in the realm of consciousness and unconsciousness, lifted her hips higher still, pressing against his large strong frame. The sharp sting of ivory tips piercing her neck drew a sharp moan of pleasure from her lips. The pain radiated across her neck and shoulder as the deadly canines remained embedded. His claws held on, creating 10 perfect imprints in her hips; another reminder of their coupling. They stayed connected, the Lycan nuzzled at her back and shoulders, the stead pumping of his hips continued feeding her womb with thick hot seed. His burning palm pressed against her belly, feeling the tip of his cock and the faint swell of her womb. The Lycan felt himself begin to slow, knot having completely swelled. He felt her painted walls lazily pulsing as her own orgasm took hold. “Chris,” Jack flung on the door then entered. The blonde saw the dark form hovering over Alex and froze. He nearly choked on the invisible cloud of arousal and sex which flooded the air. “CHRIS!”Jack rushed across the room, closing and locking the door behind him. The deep rumbled warned him to stay back which Jack obeyed. The blonde peered at Alex, who lay naked on her stomach, neck bruised and bloody as his seed trickled down her inner thighs and onto the sheets. Oh fuck, this was not good.“Chris!” Hoping to reach the man trapped inside but Jack would have to wait until the Lycan side had fulfilled its need.Several tense minutes passed before the human side reemerged. Chris blinked and peered down, fear washing over him. He struggled to pull back but to his horror and pain, the gravity of the situation. The human was still unconscious, thankfully. But, that was as good as it would get. The angry puncture wounds glared up at him while the drops of pearl streamed down his inner thighs.
“I-I,” Chris struggled to create a coherent response. “I.......I.....”Jack stared incredulously at Chris, expecting the human to awaken and find a certain Lycan's dick and knot inside her. That's gonna be the least of their worries.“I couldn't stop myself, Jack. I fought but the Lycan......”“Chris,” Chris' anxieties feeding into his mind, “Did you turn her?”He mutely shook his head, feeling his knot slowly shrink, allowing him to cautiously pull away. It had already begun. “I was removing her clothes and the Lycan, it came out and claimed her.”“Shit, Chris” Jack hung his head then scrubbed a hand over his face then fetching him a pair of boxers. “You know what this means.”“I don't even know her, Jack! She's a complete stranger!”“See what happens when you pick up random humans in the mountains? You need to figure out how to break the news to her. How are you going to explain to her that while she was injured and unconscious.....”“I know, Jack, I know! I can already feel our bond beginning to strengthen. If Arias finds out, he'll make her suffer to get to me.”Chris leaned up against the chair, fingers digging into the soft backing as he contemplated his next move.“What if she hates me?”“Don't be an asshole and she won't.”“Thanks for the advice,” Chris rolled his eyes.“It's what I'm here for,” Jack flashed another smile, “Now, let me help you get her cleaned up. You're in no state to do this. Alone.”The bath was hot but washed away any trace her primitive nose could pick up. Chris was careful, avoiding the cracked ribs. The cloth was soft and lathered, his sweeps gentle and slow. The idea of aftercare was not exactly in the forefront of his racing mind, let alone minutes ago, his Lycan side decided to mate and knot the woman below him. His scent was now all over her, no other would dare to take what was rightfully his now. Which presented the other problem: Arias. His need to protect her was powerful, growing with each passing moment he spent with her.“Don't hate me,” he whispered as the water swirled down the drain.Chris carefully placed Alex on her back, resuming care of her injuries. Jack passed the wrap over, keeping a close on his emotionally shaken leader and friend. Her upper body was easy on his eyes. Her skin had a light kiss of the sun across her shoulders and the tops of her breasts. Grabbing the wrap, he began to wind the stiff elastic around her mid section and breasts, as the ribs in question were on the upper end of the rib cage. His hands trembled the entire time, fighting to find the words to tell her when she awakened.Satisfied with his work, Chris fetched a pair of his shorts and shirt for her. She looked frail in his clothing, on account of the size difference. Her head had sunk into the overstuffed pillows. He pulled the duvet up to her collarbone, his fingers then sliding up to leave a feathery caress across her cheek. How was he going to explain this to her? He didn't even know her name! Chris cupped his hand along her cheek, taking in this private moment. He only hoped she wouldn't reject him.
Present Time......
His musings were interrupted by the footfalls approaching him. Alex returned, bag in hand and a look of displeasure dominating her face. Her cerulean rings sharpening as she spoke.“I need to get a new phone,” she slung the bag over her shoulder.Glen Arias hated when plans didn't go as expected. However, that didn't mean failure was not without opportunity. He sipped the fine Chianti, watching the sun as it illuminated the little city below. While Chris Redfield and his merry pack of mutts won this round, it was but one battle in the centuries old war. He would regroup, as he did after such losses. His mind wandered back to the events of the previous night. They had retreated back to his home, away from the retched stench of the pack. Anger had dictated his thoughts, the loss of his prize at the forefront of his mind. Maria had gone back, spying on Redfield from a safe distance. Her hatred for Lycans rivaled his own and Arias had fine tuned that malice into a weapon at his disposal. While she had been hard on the human, what after all, the cop had fought back once those dogs arrived. Diego was tended to a few scratches and scrapes, courtesy of that blonde oaf Krauser. The parting gift across his face already healing. Krauser was nothing more than an overstuffed walking ball of rage.“I know, Diego, those horrid creatures will pay.”Diego grunted as he watched the shallow wounds knit together. He was a man of few words and more action. Maria was all the family he had left. The light tread of boot steps alerted him to Maria's return. She brushed the few flakes off her shoulders and arms as she entered the study.“What did you find out my dear?”“They took the human with them. Redfield was adamant they did so.”“Oh?” Arias absorbed this news. “I imagine they took her to some safe house they have. While this complicates matters, it's not a significant setback.”Maria wasn't sure what Arias saw in her. She was just a stupid weak little human who she could've easily broken under her grasp.Arias finished his drink, letting the warmth of the sun kiss his warm flesh. The blood of the nameless woman flowed through his veins, rich with bourbon; a night at the bar. Her body would be found sure enough but Diego worked it over to throw off the authorities. It was just a pick me up as he craved the blood of the cop. Since his beloved, Sarah, had perished at the hands of hunters, Arias had been alone. Of course, there had been others; bodies to keep his bed warm and body full. But, he would grow weary, tired and bored of them, leaving them for Maria and Diego to do as they pleased. But the woman, her scent was intoxicating, exotic almost. He wondered how she would sound pinned beneath him, writhing against him as he bestowed unspoken pleasure upon her mortal flesh. Oh, they would be beautiful sounds, a symphony of sweet cries and low whimpers, begging him for more as her sweet blood danced across his tongue and lips.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
“Rose, you need to relax. Alex took some sick time off and she said her phone got busted,” Jettingham attempted to reassure a deeply concerned Marco. “She needs some time alone to process everything. I mean, shit, Enrico is gone and everyone's feeling it. If she needs anything, she'll text or call us.”They were at the local watering hole; the one RCPD liked to frequent. On this particular evening, a few seats were occupied, giving them the pick of the place. They decided on a back booth away from the few bar goers, allowing them a semblance of privacy. Marco had asked Crispin to join him as he had spoken with Alex before the sudden radio silence.“Look, I know you still love her; a lot. She doesn't blame you for any of it. Alex puts it all on her shoulders. It hit her harder than she was putting on and refused to open up about things. Hell, if Dylan hadn't been able to reach her w...hen he did..”Crispin finished his drink, turning to motion for another at the bartender. Marco shook his head, still nursing his drink. Tonight's poison of choice was a Canadian whiskey.“Anything about that explosion on the west side of the city?” Jettingham switched the subject.“No,” Marco took a drink, “But definitely a bomb. Someone wanted that place destroyed. They definitely worked to cover their tracks though. Still trying to determine what type. Fire's investigating. May take weeks before anything turns up.”“Hmm,” Jettingham mused. “Strange some warehouse no one has been seen going to or from for years suddenly turns into a five alarm fireball.”“Maybe someone needed the insurance money,” Marco snorted sarcastically. “Krauser is investigating it as it's his thing. Man can sniff out an accelerate a mile away.”As they conversed, neither man was aware they were being watched.Piers sat at the bar, savoring a local brew. Leon's connections at RCPD had directed him to the two men who currently held his attention. One was an older man with spiked hair in the front and a scar across the right side of his face. That was Alex's partner, Jettingham. The other man, well he was a different story. This was the Marco that Alex had referred to at the safe house. The one who triggered the possessive display in Chris. The Marco who still loved her. He was definitely easy on the eyes. Nice build under that short sleeved black shirt and denim jeans that hugged in all the right places. The way his ass swung when he entered the bar an hour before took every bit of Piers' resolve not to wanna drag him to the bathroom and screw his brains out. His jaw was square cut with eyes that shined like a pair of perfect emeralds when the light struck them. His hair was kept fashionably short; jet black, his favorite color. Piers wanted to get know Marco Rose in every and any way.Chris had put him on recon while he remained with Alex, attempting to get to know his mate. The same mate who didn't know she had been bound to their Alpha. Women always figured out the truth; even in their species.“Don't worry, Rose, I'm sure she'll pop back up when she's ready,” Jettingham took another drink. “So, have you thought about diving back in?”Marco frowned then narrowed his eyes.“I don't feel ready, Jettingham. Besides, with work, I don't have time for a relationship, let alone anyone.”“That's bullshit,” Jettingham spat back. “I know for a fact you sit at home on your nights off, watching the same damn shows on Netflix. Who are you trying to kid? Look, you came off a pretty serious relationship and that takes time to work through. But, Marco, it's okay if you get out once in a while. You can't stay cooped up every night. It's not healthy. Come on, some of the guys are going to head out on Friday night. Edward is dying to go out dancing and there is this club here in town that just opened up. Come on, humor me, Rose.”Marco weighed his options. What was the worst that could happen?“Fine,” he huffed and finished his drink. If saying yes would shut Jettingham up, then so be it.The immaculate rows of pearl flashed as the knowing smile broke across Piers' lips. Looks like he had Friday night plans.Alex dropped on the couch, toying with her new phone. Annoyed would be an understatement as her impromptu house guest was busying himself in her kitchen. He insisted on preparing dinner for them; as a way to pay for allowing him to stay. Alex didn't exactly make regular grocery runs, given how erratic her life and job were so, a trip to store was in order. Alex had groaned and wondered how much the small restaurant Chris had piled in the cart was going to cost her. She had been taken aback when he covered the bill. Chris simply replied it was no big deal. The initial plan had been for her to stay with him, but rather have the risk of interruption from the guys and her already heightened anxious state, Chris decided to stay with her. He wanted to be better acquainted with Alex and in her own home where she would be comfortable was a better scenario. At first, the human resisted having a babysitter as she put it, but, when he mentioned Arias was still out there, she reluctantly acquiesced.Chris could sense the irritation radiating from her as he chopped the vegetables. Why his Lycan chose her, he didn't fully understand; yet. From the time they returned to her apartment to now, she said less than five words to him. He took a break from chopping, calling over his shoulder.“I know it's a lot to take in. But, how else was I supposed to explain it?”He could hear her typing a text then send it then exhale. Chris wasn't sure what to say next. He had thrived in solitude for so long. The only contact he had with the other sex was through one night stands or with his sister, Claire. And Claire, had a mate, Steve. He had called her after the claiming; his human side panicked. Hell, his pulse was racing and palms sweaty through the entire conversation.
“Claire........I don't even know her!”
“Well, you're going to have to get to know her, Chris.”
“What if she rejects the bond?”
“Give her a reason not to? For being alive this long, you're as dumb as fuck when it comes to women.”
“In case your forgot, humans aren't exactly the most welcoming. How do you think she's gonna react when she learns the truth?”
“What? That your Lycan emerged, mounted then knotted her? While she was unconscious? And your mark is now a permanent tattoo on the back of her neck?”
“You're not helping, Claire!”
“Look, you said you shifted and she didn't panic or flee in terror. So, start there. Talk to her. Be honest with her. With her losing her friend, she's got a lot to sort through. Dumping the whole 'So my Lycan side mated us while you were unconscious' bit won't win you points. At least, not now.”
Chris looked over at Alex as she sat on the couch, numbly flipping through the channels. Be honest is what Claire told him.
“Uh, how do you like your steak?” Alex blinked and tilted her head, pulling her attention from the hockey game.“Rare,” she quipped. “You know how to cook?”“Of course. Jack can't cook for shit. Leon can find his way around a kitchen and Piers....well, he would rather order out at every opportunity.”“I can see Jack burning a kitchen down. Matches his charming personality.”Chris laughed and turned to head outside. Alex leaned forward, watching him head out to the patio. He did have a nice body; probably spends hours a day at the gym. The tactical pants fit a bit too well and he had a thing about shirts that Alex swore had to be a size too small. The damn thing was literally stretched like Saran wrap around his torso and arms. From the corner of his eye, Chris caught the human taking him in and smiled to himself. So, he gave her a little more to gaze upon as he shifted his body to show his best asset. Alex found herself literally gawking as Chris turned. Her body leaned over harder, nearly tipping herself off the edge of the couch. The Red Wings game quickly forgotten. What the Hell was wrong with her? She had this complete stranger, who turned out to be a goddamn Lycan, werewolf, whatever, who saved her life from a group of vampires, and was now playing Gordon Ramsey in her damn apartment. Yet, a part of her wanted him there. It was.....comforting. She felt safe with him there.Chris continued to feel the weight of her eyes pressing down on him as he tended to the steaks then headed for the dining area. His sharp hearing heard her stomach as the invisible trails tantalized her, luring her in. She was slow to rise and cross the room but, he knew it was posturing. He waited for her, watching as she eased into the chair across from him. Her eyes scanning the rich offering he had prepared: Strip steaks with wild rice, sauteed string beans, cauliflower, and a small side salad. Alex couldn't recall the last time she had a proper meal and going to a casual dining restaurant didn't count.“It looks good.”He sat patiently, observing as she gingerly took the first bite. Her eyes closed and body relaxed against the back of the kitchen chair.“Glad you like it,” Chris cut into his own meal. Alex's tongue tingled at the deluge of culinary delights, begging for more. She moaned in delight, temporarily forgetting she was not alone. This feast put Marco's cooking to the test and he had an Italian grandmother teach him to cook. She turned ravenous, devouring every tender morsel then turning her voracious appetite on the delicate steaming offering to the right. The buttery goodness only amplified the sensory overload she was beginning to experience. Her mind and taste buds were swimming in culinary orgasmic bliss. The salad was equally amazing as the spring mix was crisp, cucumbers crunchy, sliced the way she would see them in the high end restaurants and tomatoes sweet.Chris took pleasure in the scene playing out before him. Her animated reaction went straight to his groin. Oh how he yearned to hear those pretty moans and sighs being extracted in a different means. The vision of her on all fours, hand gently curled around her neck, the beautiful song which played out would flood his keen ears. His cock buried deep inside, her body embracing him, warm soft and wet as his knot swelled, locking their bodies in a carnal embrace.
No......
He warned the Lycan clawing at the back of his mind.
Mate......
Chris forced his Lycan to retreat, determined to continue making inroads on his terms.Alex wiped the smear of butter and vinaigrette from the corners of her lips. Dinner had hit the right spot. She had seen a cheesecake bundled in the mess of produce and meat eager to compliment this amazing meal. She started to clear the dishes when his hand covered hers. Alex peered questioningly at her guest, who placed his other hand on her shoulder, coaxing her back down.“Allow me,” his voice rumbled in a low manner. She never let Marco get away with this but here she was, letting Chris take control. Chris, a complete stranger. Chris, who saved her skin.“You don't have to do this,” she protested but Chris cut her off.“But I want to, Alex. It's alright to let someone take care of you.”Alex raised an eyebrow at this. She wasn't helpless. Chris took a seat next to her, daring to take a hand in hers.“Please, for tonight, let me take care of you.”She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Alex couldn't believe she was about to say it.“Alright,” she nodded. Why not? Someone else can do the dishes this time.Chris concealed his elation at this. Baby steps forward were still steps in the right direction. He finished clearing the table, then brought two generous slices of that cheesecake Alex had been eyeing since the store. The hum of the dishwasher echoed from the left as Chris sunk into the couch. The rush of water to his right was Alex in the shower. Damn he wanted to be in there with her, running his strong calloused hands across her warm skin, caressing those full breasts, tasting her against his lips as his mouth slid along her neck and shoulder. The steamy torrent rushing over their naked bodies as they reveled in one another's presence.Chris shut his eyes, letting the erotic vision engulf his mind. The pillow concealed the erection which made his boxers slightly uncomfortable.Soon enough, vision would turn reality.Alex emerged from the hall, seeing Chris in a tranquil state, feeling dismayed as she hoped he would be awake. Her mind was swimming with questions about vampires and Lycans. Now that the curtain had been ripped away, exposing her to this unseen world, Alex craved more. More knowledge, more about all of it. And it would have to wait until the morning. She didn't rush to go to bed, her will not her own. Alex couldn't but feel drawn to him, to watch him in this vulnerable state. The blanket was drawn up, blocking any chill that may be in the air. Alex took a moment, letting this sight melt into her mind. Chris didn't look as intimidating when in slumber. His handsome face titled right, his eyelids twitching as he was lost in some dream which only he was privy to. This man, Lycan, whatever he wanted to be called, saved her life, tended to her injuries and even made her dinner.
Later that night........
Chris bolted up, finding a blanket draped over him. Darkness greeting him. A faint whimper was drifting from Alex's room. Bolting from the couch, Chris rushed down the hall with urgency. The whimpers grew louder and longer in his hearing as he reached her bedroom. The sight which awaited him ripped at his chest. Alex was curled up in the center, the top of her head poking out from the top of the blanket. Her huddled form shaking as she wept in her sleep. Chris padded across the room, easing on the edge of the bed. His hand reached out, landing on her shaky shoulder.“Alex,” he whispered. “Alex.”The small cries slowed until groaning replaced them. She stirred then pushed the bedding aside. Her eyes were glazed over in initial confusion as she returned to consciousness. Her hair was chaotic but in a sexy way as she sat up. Chris shifted on the bed, alerting her to his presence.“What are you doing in here?” her voice creaked and eyes narrowed.“Heard you crying. I wanted to make sure you were alright.”She scrubbed her hand across her face, recalling she had been deep in the throes of a night terror.“I'm fine now.”“Then why are you still shaking?” Her body vibrated against his touch.“It's nothing,” she dismissed his questioning and looking away.“It is something,” he gently pressed.“I'm fine, really, I am,” she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. She couldn't see the frown etched on his face.“I'll leave you be,” he decided to retreat to the couch. Her small rejection had caused him to slump back down the hall leaving Chris attempting to figure out what he said wrong. The next morning, Chris felt a weight against his body. Turning his head, the top of a brown crown of locks filled his vision. Peering further down, he caught the rest of her body sprawled alongside his. Her arms fiercely latched around him, head nuzzled against his chest. He dare not move out fear of waking her up. Chris slid a protective arm around her waist, mindful of her injured ribs then closed his eyes. His sharp ears caught the change in her heart rate. She must be waking up. Chris mentally braced himself for the inevitable shock followed by rejection. The shift in her position said otherwise.Chris kept his hold loose, giving her all the room she need to readjust. The sage from her shampoo titillated his senses, brain imprinting the delicate scent to memory. His Lycan was quiet, pacified perhaps by this shift in events. He couldn't help himself as he carded his fingers through her hair, finding the tresses running through like silk against his skin. Her heart had slowed once again, announcing she had fallen back asleep.Alex had not fallen back asleep after she dismissed Chris. No, her mind refused to let her return to the land of Nod. So, she had lay there, staring at the ceiling; a punishment for her cold reception. She couldn't recall the subconscious drama which led to her distress. Perhaps, it was her mind protecting her. That's what the shrink told her after she returned from combat. She checked her watch: 0130. Guilt nibbled at the corners of her conscience. Chris didn't deserve to be spoken to like that. He was trying to help. He wanted to take care of her. What was the harm in going out to the living room? If he wanted to harm her, he could've done it when she was asleep or having that night terror.Huffing, she threw the blankets off and made her way to the living room. The light peeked through the slats, casting a few streams across his sleeping form. Alex weighed the idea of climbing on top of him as sleeping on her stomach would inflame her wound further. Well, if he woke up and told her to get off, she would. Alex was certain that would be the outcome of this. Grabbing the blanket he had discarded on the floor, Alex eased down on her side, drawing the blanket up and over. As she lowered down, Alex paused, listening to the deep steady rhythm beneath her. Her heart started to quicken as her body stretched out. Chris had not moved or stirred. Talk about being a deep sleeper. Alex yearned to have such a problem. The rising and ebbing of his chest fell into cadence with hers as Alex felt the beckoning of slumber once again. No nightmares or hellish visions came to her after. The next time either one woke up, it was after 7. Alex had not moved from her position but had subconsciously nestled deeper into him. Chris' fingers caressed the smooth planes of her back and shoulders, which drew a few moans of content from the sleeping woman. A sense of serenity fanned throughout his mind and body drawing a thin smile to his lips. His fingers drifted lower until they were gliding across the raised flesh that was his claiming mark. Chris shuddered as the minute charge surged along his spine.Alex stirred and slowly blinked, confused as to her surroundings at first, but rapidly recalled where she was. The light pressure of his fingers against her had a soothing effect as the initial apprehension melted away. She shut her eyes and deeply inhaled his scent. It was strong, imprinting on her as she continued infusing his essence. Alex felt......safe.“Mmm sorry about snapping at you last night,” she mumbled. “You were only trying to help.”She adjusted to take pressure off the injured ribs, keeping her arm around his narrow waist.“Apology accepted,” Chris mumbled. He was lost in her, reveling in this intimate moment. His fingers never ceasing the feathery brushes across the back of her neck. Alex felt herself leaning back into his touch, any shards of tension softening.“I have questions, Chris.”“About?” The light strokes paused briefly before resuming.“Everything. I want to know everything about Lycans and vampires.”“Alright,” Chris felt his own body sinking into the cushions. The desire to understand his world lifted his soul. He yearned to share all he could. Few could claim to have such opportunity.“But right now, I don't want to move,” Alex murmured against his side. Chris slid his hand down, collecting her own within it, the impressive size swallowing her smaller one.“We can stay this way for as long as you want.”“Would be nice,” she sighed, finding her fingers brushing his shirt. The faint sensation charged his senses, tiny sparks ignited wherever her touch fell.Chris hummed in agreement.Alex allowed herself to fantasize about how things could go with Chris. That part of her brain that remained the optimistic, sometimes hopeless romantic. The wall she had thrown up after the painful split from Marco had kept her from letting anyone else in; including her partner. Alex had delved head first into work, finding excuses to not have to go home. Home was where she'd be left to her thoughts; dangerous thoughts. Home had become a place to sleep and eat. Nothing more. But after last night.......She didn't realize how sharing an honest to god meal, a meal that wasn't from a to go box or greasy paper sack, with another person, had reawakened something in her soul. The nightly ritual many took for granted like breathing or sleeping. Alex had been starving for this simplicity, this mundane deed and didn't recognize she was deprived of this emotional hunger until then.Chris was content. Stretched out with his mate alongside him. His phone vibrated, drawing a deep annoyed growl from its owner. Using his free arm, he snagged the offensive device, seeing it was a message from Jack.“Tell whoever it is to piss off,” she mirrored his annoyance. He regrettably released her hand as he opened his phone to see what his second in command wanted.
Did you tell her?
Chris grimaced like the other could see his response.
No....
The three dots wavered, telling him Jack had his damn phone by him, sitting on it. He must have the day off from work.
You're terrible at this.
Chris bared his teeth at the screen.
Unless you're letting me know Arias is on the move, I'm going now.
The three dots wavered one final time.
Okay, Casanova, I'll leave you to your date. :D
“Asshole,” the word came out as a snarl and dropped the phone on the stand, then collected her hand back within his. The other returned to tracing the mark proudly etched into her flesh. The sharp pained breath caught his attention.“What's wrong?”“Ribs,” she winced. “Rubbing against my side. Fucking burning.”Without responding, he lifted both of them up off the couch. His arm sweeping under, catching behind her knees as the other supported her upper body. Staying silent, he padded down the hall towards her room.Chris placed her back on the bed, letting her adjust as he climbed in the other side. The sharp bolts abated, on account of being on her back. Alex frowned as she preferred to snuggle alongside his towering frame, but her ribs would only howl in protest again. She looked over, watching as he rolled to his side, an arm hooked around her. Alex's comfort was Chris' priority. Her body didn't heal as his did.“Damn ribs, killing the moment,” She laughed humorlessly and craned her neck to meet his eyes.“You're still healing. Takes time.”“How fast do you heal?”“About half the time of humans; depends on the wound. Would be fully healed by now.”“Must be nice.”“It's an advantage when locked in battle.”“Like with vampires?”“Exactly. They can deliver serious injury or death to us. But, we can dispatch the same with their kind.”Alex suddenly felt tired and closed her eyes. Chris listened to her heart slow and breathing shift to a deep slow tempo. He leaned over, his lips pressing softly to hers, lingering for a few delicious moments before he pulled away, letting the warmth of her lips settle against his. Chris nuzzled the junction of her neck and shoulder and allowed himself to sink into slumber.
