----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The first day at a new school was always a strange mix of excitement and dread. Seo-Joon stood before the massive gates of Haneul Academy, with the towering structure looming over him like some mighty fortress. It was his new home for the next year or more, but the sheer size of the place made him feel small. Like something out of a glossy brochure, the school gleamed: its glass windows clear and shiny, the architecture sleek and modern. Chatting students roamed everywhere in the spacious courtyard, their voices forming a soft hum. The sunlight bounced off the pristine white walls, casting long shadows across the pavement. It was a stark contrast to his old school, which had been smaller, more lived-in, with ivy-covered buildings and less polish altogether.
But none of that mattered. For Seo-Joon had learned to detach himself from his surroundings years ago. The real thing to watch out for was always the people.
The chatter around him was a mixture of curiosity and judgment, all floating on the warm breeze. Students, dressed in everything from casual jeans and T-shirts to high-end, effortlessly stylish outfits, passed by without ever giving him a look. They were wrapped up in their own little worlds and didn't care about the new kid—or so he thought.
Seo-Joon, with a backpack slung casually over one shoulder, adjusted his loose black jeans and made his way through the main entrance. The walls were lined with lockers, some adorned by stickers, photos and other personal touches; the floors polished almost unnaturally shiny. The smell of freshly brewed coffee from a nearby cafeteria was mingled with faint traces of paper and ink from textbooks lying around various desks. He passed by different groups of students in the hall: some chattering, some arguing, others laughing. In a quiet corner, a few students sat, leaning over their phones and bringing the world around them to life with the latest news or social media--unconcerned about their own life. But the stares: the eyes that never failed. Whether eyes that darted quickly, avoiding his glance by looking at an almost-anything less person or eyes that watched, waited and let turn into a sort of knowing look--Hwang Seo-Joon was wary of them all."Whispers rushed through the hall as fast as a bird and, like a slight deviation in his step, made Seo-Joon pause for breath. His hand squeezed ever-so light around the strap of his backpack, though he made no other movement. He had already been warned about this by his father, Hwang In-ho: that he himself would be known equally well by his school principal father. He wasn't correctly received as an aloof person, but rather he was labeled. That was the problem. Seo-Joon shut them out of his mind and went forward, pressing on in that direction. He refused to be the center of gossip.
The locker he was directed to was number 457, near the center of the main hallway. He reached out with his hand, a tentative touch running along its sleek metallic exterior while looking around. To his left, a group of female students were whispering and scheming against some stars. On his right was the sound of the vending machine that almost drowned out their chatter as the girl picked up an orange drink with a loud clink. Before he could open the locker, he heard a voice."New guy, huh?"
Seo-Joon turned to find a boy beside him, leaning against the locker with one hand, and the other slid into his pocket in an easy fashion.
He had an easygoing sort of smile hanging onto his lips. His hair was coffee-brown, and in disarray--as if he had tried but halfway through decided to give up. He wore a loose sweatshirt, torn jeans and sneakers, nothing too formal yet never without its own kind of grace.
"Right," Seo-Joon agreed, "First day of school."
His grin was even broader as he pushed himself up from the lockers and held out a hand. "My name’s Min-ho, your first official tour guide."
Seo-Joon hesitated for a moment before shaking his hand, noting the warmth and confidence within the grip. Min-ho was not a man who tried too hard; his presence was magnetic in its own way. He was the kind of fella who made you want to talk with him about anything or absolutely nothing.
"How do you like it so far?" Min-ho asked, his eyes shining with merriment.
Seo-Joon tilted his head slightly, letting the noise of the hallway fill the cave. "It's okay. Just attracts a bit too much attention for my taste."Min-ho chuckled. "Oh, sure. You're always a centre of curiosity when you're the new kid in town. But when you're also the principal's kid? Double trouble."
Seo-Joon raised one eyebrow. "So everyone’s heard of me then?"
Min-Ho gave a half shrug, his expression light. "It's no big deal. You're kind of famous here, whether you like it or not." He glanced Seo-Joon over for a moment, then the playful quirk in his brown eyes softened out as his curiosity turned more serious. "But don’t worry. No one will tear off your head. Not unless you give some reason to."
Before Seo-Joon could say anything a girl had already walked up to them. She was tall with sharp features and shoulder-length black hair that was cut perfectly for her face. Her dark eyes were keen, constantly calculating everything around; the clean lines of her mouth held only inscrutable strength. Her clothes were simple--a black tank top and waist-high jeans--yet they exuded a sort of silent confidence.
She sauntered over to Min-Ho and rested her arms on her chest."Min-Ho, stop scaring the newcomer."
"Scaring?" He put an offended hand on his heart. "I was welcoming!"
The girl rolled her eyes but couldn’t help smiling slightly. "Your welcoming his words tracked. Then she saluted Seo-Joon. ‘My name is So-Min. Nice meeting you, new guy. Don’t mind him, he's harmless. "
Seo-Joon smiled back. "Nice to meet you too."
After their brief encounter by the lockers, Min-Ho took him to the first class--which was maths located above, on the second floor. The stairs creaked slightly underfoot, sharing the common noise within an otherwise quiet corridor. The math classroom was well-lit, with sunlight filtering through open windows. The whiteboard was a mass of chalky formulas-type on top. Students chatted almost inaudibly, but as soon as So-Joon tiptoed in, eyes turned his way, daggers glanced out murderous light around at random people. It wasn’t unfriendly; the stares were so bloody curious.
Before lunch, the day had already begun to blur.
The cafeteria swarmed with life-noisy, rough laughter cracking like an echo. Min-Ho seated So-Joon near the middle of the room, where beams of sunlight streamed in from windows high and wide, casting the area into a warm gold shadow.
"This is the place," Min-Ho loaded his tray onto the table before him.
So-Min walked over a moment later and slid into the bench across from Seo-Joon. "Every first day always feels like a whirl," She shook her head, putting down her tray. "But you seem to be doing pretty well. Most folks today would be sweating like hell."
Seo-Joon shrugged, "Wouldn't say that."
"Then don’t rush yourself into thinking it’s all smooth sailing just yet," Min-Ho laughed. "Because the true examination lies when you have to face one of the good ones." He gestured at the lively bunches of students around them, "Take it from me-these people can drag in a baker's dozen."
"So they will find it hard, because the school is a hotbed of life"—with a joking smile, So-Min again broke in. "But as long as you don't lose your head, there's no harm in any of it.""I know." Seo-Joon felt a lightening of his heart. It seemed like the first time he had actually spoken with someone in real conversation that wasn’t either a look or murmurs in his ear. These two people were different--down to earth and easy-going. Listening to their laughter, Seo-Joon suddenly realized that, for the first time today, he felt like he actually could fit in here.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The buzz over the principal’s son had died down a bit, but still remained in the background like static to which he could find no off switch. But today there was something different in the air. It was not quite as tense as before. Perhaps he had survived the first day without making a fool of himself, or perhaps it was because he had already been able to meet a few people. So-Min had been just like he had expected, sharp, distant, with eyes sucking in all detail. She was not the kind of person who got friendly in a hurry, but there was something about her that made him curious. That had been what she said to him yesterday when she was silent, burrowing a thread of friendship through the chaos. It became his compass point as he fought his way through the snarl of rumors and preconceptions. And then there was Min-Ho. He was a guy who was absolutely the opposite of So-Min in the best possible way. He was warm, friendly, and he always had a joke or a light-hearted comment to keep things from becoming unbearably heavy. As they talked, Seo-Joon felt as if he was not wholly alone in this school. Min-Ho told Seo-Joon in no uncertain terms that he was someone who really wanted to make sure Seo-Joon didn’t feel out of place. He recognized So-Min and Min-Ho by their lockers, which is exactly the same as yesterday: So-Min leans against a metal one with crossed arms and an expression that looks content amidst such chaos; the other side looks peaceful too. Min-Ho is busy straightening his flannel shirt while sitting back casually on it.Seo-Joon felt a glimmer of relief. He wouldn’t have to start out this day all by himself. Walking right up to them, waving his hand and saying hello helps to take away any embarrassment that a mini breakfast buffet may cause.“Hey,” he responded, trying not to sound like they were very close friends.Min-Ho looked up first; his dark brown curls bouncing as he grinned widely. “Yo, Seo-Joon! How’s life?”So-Min just barely looked up from her phone, but she nodded briefly. Although one might not have been able to read her mood at this point in time, there was something about being so comfortable that gave off good feelings regardless.“I’m managing to survive,” Seo-Joon responded with a small laugh. “And you guys?”Min-Ho would’ve been lying if he said he could teach himself to be more serious and So-Min still only stared up at him for half the time. But the corners of her lips curled in faint amusement.“I’m doing what I can,” she muttered as her eyes remained firmly on the phone.Their friendship was infectious enough to make Seo-Joon chuckle. They clearly felt at ease with themselves, and for the first time since entering Haneul Academy, Seo-Joon had a sense his footing might just begin right here. But as soon as they began to speak again, a loud voice came down the corridor, breaking through the rumble of conversation about them and shaking the very air. It was impossible to ignore.“Yo! New kid!”Surprised, Seo-Joon turned and opened his eyes. The speaker was a guy with a short, fiery red mullet and black roots that screamed attention. He had a rough-sounding voice, filled with energy; it was impossible not to notice him. With a cocky grin, the guy strode up to them wearing baggy jeans, an oversized T-shirt, and Jordans. A slit in his left eyebrow gave an air of danger, and an unmistakable wild energy shouted that Seo-Joon recognized immediately as trouble.“Hey, so you’re the new kid?” said the grinning guy as he came closer.Seo-Joon was not quite sure how to react, chewing that question over. “Yeah, that’s me.”Almost before Seo-Joon could say much more there was a sharp slap to his back, so hard that he almost lost his step. "I'm Joon-Woo," the other boy said, his smile mischievous yet filled with self-confidence. "You need to brace yourself. In fact, it's like a circus here and I am the lion-tamer."That transformed how Seo-Joon perceived these people. Joon-woo was a name that traveled rapidly throughout the school, even if you didn't seek it. He was a mix of praise and complaints to people--depending on who you asked. The son of a former rapper and a former convict of drug-related charges, his looks screamed bad music, his temper screamed something worse. There was no telling what this guy might do. Seo-Joon thought: "This chap isn't the kind you just meet, he's the kind that happens to you." Then Seo-Joon said nothing more.So-min's expression remained the same, but a smug smile appeared at the corner of her mouth. "Great," she snorted under her breath, completely unimpressed by Joon-Woo's action.Min-Ho, however, laughed, obviously greatly amused by the wild energy that Joon-Woo emitted. "Hoo boy! Here we go. I suppose you've met Joon-Woo," Min-Ho said with a knowing smile on his face.Joon-Woo gave Min-Ho a look out of the corners of his eyes, mischievously. "You sound like that's a bad thing.” Trust me—if there wasn't me, this school would be even drier." He clapped Seo-Joon on the back again, grinning. "You'll get used to it."Seo-Joon raised an eyebrow, at a loss for how to deal with this character. "Really?"“Oh, you will," Joon-Woo said, "You'll see. Stick with me, child. I'll teach you how to have fun." He hung his arm over Seo-Joon's shoulders. According to Seo-Joon, that was a movement that was almost too haphazard. But So-Min's eyes said to him: "Joon-Woo, sometimes I think YOU should be scolded for not being serious."
He gave her a happy grin that seemed to dance with playfulness. “Nah, I’m good. Seriousness is overrated.”He then turned back to Seo-Joon. “So, whatcha say new kid? Are you ready to survive this week with the rest of us?”So-Min and Min-Ho looked at Seo-Joon for a moment before they turned back to Joon-Woo, who gave them an uncomprehending smile. But the minute he spoke the words, he exhaled. Now he felt deep inside that he didn’t have much choice.“You see?” Joon-Woo said, smugly. “You're already beginning to fit in.”As the group hurried off to class, Seo-Joon realized that he had somehow landed in the midst of a small, unruly friend group. It wasn’t gangbangers; So-Min was the type of cool-headed tough and sharp-witted girl who liked softness to hard, Min-Ho steered calmly through life, and now there’s Joon-Woo. It didn't fit, but at the same time it did."Whoa, Black Betty!" Joon-woo commented, his teeth flashing ever so briefly as if under some kind of pressure. It wasn't much, but now there was something else.A sarcastic reply came out of So-Min's mouth. The remark triggered laughter from Min-Ho."Wow," Joon-Woo said, itself almost a bordering-on-stupid story.Although it wasn't much in any one specific thing, it was still enough. For the first time, Seo-Joon grew curious about whether he was not as alone at this place as he thought. Maybe, for all of this, he might even be able to belong here. And so, for the first time, the bell of class will eventually ring and make him smile a little. Just a little. But it might not be impossible that Haneul Academy holds no good for Seo-Joon.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Seo-Joon put on a pair of new shoes and a windbreaker. His fingers ran through the blades of grass slowly on his way to football practice. The first day on the field, in this aspect, there is a different quality of energy-more intense and more requiring. First two days were made up mainly of introductions, simple drills. Now things are serious. No more just attending practice like he used to. Today was about proving that he belonged here though. Seo-Joon felt that familiar nervousness of excitement knotting in his diaphragm. This was not the kind of nervousness which arose from doubt. It was the pressure of expectation, and knowing that he had to do better than his best. He was new here, and other people were already noticing him. But not in the way he wanted it to be. The fact that he was the principal's son followed him like a silent accusation, and he felt already the inquietude of these people around him speaking in whispers. They were all curious for some reason; some were even skeptical in a way, as if he were some kind of cliché. But Seo-Joon was not interested in that, he was here for one thing, football. He was not going to let who his father was define him, and only on the field could he show the world that.“All right, fellows!” Coach Han's voice cut through the team's chatter. He was at the edge of the field, his presence stopping any unnecessary noise or trouble. “Today's practice is for everyone to be together. It’s not always being a lone alpha wolf, it is about how you fit in with your fellow. You may be the best player in the world, but unless you know how to cooperate closely with your comrade-comrade, then no use whatever to me.”Seo-Joon swallowed and his nerves spiked as Coach Han’s eyes swept across the team; a silent challenge hung in the air. A no-nonsense kind of guy, the coach demanded results and wouldn‘t put up with anybody's slack. Seo-Joon didn't know this, but he was about to have his work cut out for him. "You’ll be practicing in pairs today, the people I call are partners!" Coach Han continued firmly in a voice that had strength to it from start to finish. After a deep breath he took, he scanned the field. "Seo-Joon!" The coach's gaze landed on him. Seo-Joon felt the pressure hitting him squarely in his chest. "You're with Hyeon-Ju."Seo-Joon blinked. Hyeon-Ju? The name had come up a couple of times, always in the context of high praise, but he hadn't yet had a chance to speak with the man. Looking around, Seo-Joon tried to spot him in the crowd of players. Then, there he was, Hyeon-Ju was walking toward him, his tall frame cutting through the group like a sharp knife. It was easy the way he moved, an easy swagger that made him stand out even more than his height. The soft black surf-cut hair of Hyeon-Ju hung slightly over his brown eyes as he walked along. He was at ease too, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth like he was already in the midst of a joke. Dressed in simple training clothes—a black, baggy shirt and grey sweatpants. His presence on the field stopped people in their tracks—literally, heads spun around involuntarily as though drawn toward it."What's up?" Hyeon-Ju called as he approached Seo-Joon, calm and genial in his voice. "You're Seo-Joon, aren't you?" Seo-Joon nodded, extending a hand. "Yes, that's me. I guess today we're partners."He shook his head with a touching smile. “You play often?” Hyeon-ju asked. Seo-Joon raised an eyebrow, wondering if it was a public challenge, “I play, but usually lowkey.”“I’m the same,” Hyeon-Ju chuckled even more. “But I always want to see how people deal with the heat.” A glance that said it all. “Are you ready to show Coach what you can do now?”Seo-Joon felt a twinge of the challenge simmering in his heart. One thing was clear, Hyeon-Ju was not simply here to go through the motions; he had come here to win. This made Seo-Joon even more determined to prove himself. The two of them jogged over to the coach, where the team was already assembled. Coach Han was arranging things again, and as soon as Seo-Joon and Hyeon-Ju arrived they were called to another drill.“Today we are going to work on passes, communication, your sense of where each other is going...” Coach Han began. “You pair off for one-on-one plays. You two will start this off!” He said, pointing at Seo-joon and Hyeon-Ju. “Now show us some trust. Let’s see how well you can communicate and how quickly you get into sync.”Seo-Joon lined up with Hyeon-Ju, took a deep breath. Despite the intensity of practice, he mustn't falter now. If he was going to shine in this crowd, he had to stay focused.“Ready?” asked Hyeon-Ju, his voice quiet but full of power."Ready," Seo-Joon said, finding himself; the heart races. A line of adrenaline ran through his veins. Football wasn't to be just simply a game for him-it was the chance for him to shine. He was not interested in any whisperings or suspicions right now. This was the time for him to show that he belonged. The first pass came fast, indeed so fast that Seo-Joon hardly had time to respond before the ball lay at his feet. Hyeon-Ju's mode of action was fast, sharp and instinctual. Whatever he did was done with no self-doubt in him nor even a moment's hesitation. You could tell that this man had been playing football a long time. His understanding of the game, the way he moved-everything about him was precise.Seo-Joon returned the ball with equal precision, but just as he did so, Hyeon-Ju took a quick move at him, closing down his space. Seo-Joon had to up his game, matching Hyeon-Ju’s intensity as he sidestepped, trying to keep control of the ball.Once more the ball shot off its place on his foot, this time toward the goal. Seo-Joon watched as Hyeon-Ju was already on the move, after it in a sprint that was almost unbeatable for speed. The two of them were in lockstep, silent, each anticipating the other's move without needing words-just instinct. No thought, only action.Hyeon-Ju threw himself forward, hammering the ball past the keeper into the back of the net with a quick, sure kick. The sound of the ball hitting the net rang through Seo-Joon’s chest; he stood there in the quiet for several seconds."Nicely done," said Seo-Joon, though his voice strained compared to the spirit that was boiling inside him.Hyeon-Ju turned and glanced back at him, eyes shining with disillusionment. “If you want to keep up here, be quick or you'll get left behind."Seo-Joon grinned. “I’m keeping up.”The next few minutes were a blur of quick passes and intense footwork. The two moved together, their partnership growing ever stronger. The game's pace picked up, and Seo-Joon felt the rhythm germinating between them. It wasn't just about a ball-essentially they were building a friendship in front of everyone's eyes. Without saying a word, they matched each other's actions, providing that kind of naturalness which made it seem like they had planned the entire suite in advance. When Coach Han tooted the whistle, signaling an end to the drill, Seo-Joon was panting for breath and his shanks were burning. But there was another scent in his nostrils, an adrenaline high from the depth of the game.Coach Han surveyed the team, his eyes lingering on the two. "Good work for both of you," he said. “You two really have something going on here. It's just that it's not only about the shots. It's also how you push each other to get better. You two should use this alliance to work harder."As they made their way from the field, Seo-Joon felt the tiredness settling into his body, his legs aching with fatigue. But he also felt something else, a wave of satisfaction that didn’t only come from this fight to prove himself any more. It was the birth of something.Hyeon-Ju slapped him on the back. “Not bad, Seo-Joon. Pretty good.”Seo-Joon nodded, the quiet flames in his heart still not dying. This was only the start.
