Mountain Wind Winter

Entire Work

Work Text

Like a bullet from a gun,

Across the evening sun,

Along each tired eye,

Silent and swift,

Or sometimes adrift

The mountain wind goes by.

Through the sleepy valleys,

And the village alleys,

Seeing the last man heave a sigh,

Breaking the silence,

With the dark alliance,

The mountain wind goes by.

Through the maze of pine,

Tiredness not its sign,

Witnessing the jackal’s cry,

Sometimes pleasant,

Sometimes turbulent,

The mountain wind goes by.

Along the golden rays,

With nature telling its ways,

And hearing the breakfast fry,

On the faces of the folk,

Like ice in a cloak,

The mountain wind goes by.

It was my night in the hills,

(And still remembering the midday stills),

To again taste the essence of it, I try,

To again feel the freshness,

To again savour the innocence,

As the mountain wind went by.

~The Mountain Wind, Vasudev

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

"Supination is a type of what?""Rotation.""Good. Where are pivot joints located?""Uh...the hip?""Nope. The shoulder. Here's an easy one: How many lobes are in the left lung?"Silence took over the room. "Uh, three?"Elestren couldn't help but allow the flashcards to drop from her hands, her eyes exasperated. "You told me you would study, Ava! What happened?!"The girl in front of her threw her hands up defensively. "The girls were too loud last night! They were so excited about meeting the dock foremen that I couldn't focus on anything!"Elestren shoved the cards back to her friend. "You always jabber about those stupid men. Can't you make time for one night to not talk about them?""I can't. Not when Rob Lucci gets brought up." Ava's features transformed, almost like she was daydreaming. "He's such a dreamboat. His hair, his eyes, his arms, that mouth--ah!"Elestren pinched her on the arm. "No man is allowed to take away your focus, especially a man you've never met! You made a promise to take charge of the medical unit when I transferred back home! How do you expect to get better at this when-"Footsteps interrupted Elestren's ranting. A flash of short, dark hair peeked around the corner of the office. "Jettie says we hit the road in forty."Ava squealed and leapt out of her chair, racing toward the elevators. Elestren yelled after her, "You better have the next four chapters memorized by tomorrow!" Ava made no inclanation she heard her as she fled to her room to get ready.Marin smirked at Elestren's evident frustration. "How's studying going?"Elestren stretched her limbs. "Not good." A small smile appeared for the first time that day. "You sure you want to be in charge of the kitchen?"Marin giggled. "Sorry. Food is more my art of choice. The human body is yours." She reached behind her and retrieved a dress from the hallway. "I think this one might suit you better than the purple one I gave you yesterday."Elestren's smile faded once more. "Do I have to?""Yes." Jettie's flittery voice carried down the hall, making both girls flinch. "No snark, Elestren! We must look our best for first impressions! The good men of the Galley-La company deserve it!"What the good men of the Galley-La company deserved was a swift kick in the uprights, Elestren thought internally. All the good they did was invade the minds and hearts of her hospitality crew. The sooner they got through introductions, the sooner the girls would get over their pivotal highs and lusts.Elestren stood up and snatched the light blue dress from Marin's outward hand, grumbling under her breath as she stomped to the elevators, Marin at her heels.
~
The clock from one of the higher towers chimed throughout the city. It was already 12 o’clock—time was going by fast today. Elestren ruffled the dress, trying to ignore the scratchy fabric that brushed her legs. She would have loved to wear shorts; Jettie just had to make such a fuss about appearances. Her discomfort would be short-lived. They were only to drop off the lunches and kits and get back to the hospitality center before the hour had passed.Elestren focused on the sun on her bare shoulders, sizzling her skin. She could taste the salt air, inhale the harsh wind that cooled the heat of the sun. She loved days like today—the weather transitioning into late summer, autumn just on the cusp of the cliff, waiting its turn to roll over across the town.
Dock One was coming into view. The girls' chattering beside her was increasing in excitement. Infatuation from the girls aside, Elestren couldn't help but be curious about it all as well. It was a treat to be able to see the Galley-La shipwrights in action—perfecting their duties, hands and voices busy. It wasn’t unusual to see crowds already forming outside the gated entrance every day. There had to be good reason the town admired them so much.Elestren didn’t know much of the shipwright crew. She heard some gossip and rumors float around the office, mostly squealed chatter about a specific shipwright and how handsome or strong he was. From how the girls talked, you would have thought they were celebrities.
Elestren never understood the fantasies of the girls, but she did respect the men. These were people—working people who took care of the city. They had jobs to carry out. If it weren’t for them, Water 7 would be demolished into the ocean, not any different than some of the ships that washed up outside the city. She didn’t know the men very well—save for Mayor Iceberg and Paulie. She would see them once a month for the town meeting, Paulie sitting for the shipwright president position. Elestren didn’t favor Paulie much; he was brazen and outspoken, and made it his mission to pester everyone who crossed him. Elestren had half a mind to drive her foot into his front teeth if she wasn’t so concerned about moving up in the medical department.
Paulie deserved to be humbled. The rest of the men, she hoped, were opposite of him.The hospitality group made their way around the crowds, pushing toward the front. Elestren surveyed the sights beyond the gate as the doors opened for them. She had never seen the dock in its full glory before; she was mesmerized by the hundreds of men bustling about, set to their own role of work.Sounds of hammering, sawing, shouting masculine voices, smells of smoke and sawdust filled the air. It was truly a sight to behold. Elestren had never seen so many rough drafts of ships in her life. Some had bases made of steel, some of wood, some with icons on the front, some carved to different shapes.
Elestren moved on her own accord, allowing herself to venture off from her group and toward a nearby station. Some men were discussing the outline of a planned ship, a blueprint laid out between them. Elestren listened to them talk, astounded by the knowledge they possessed. It was like listening to a different dialect. The group of men briefly looked up, distracted by Elestren’s hovering nearby. Embarrassment flooded Elestren, giving them an awkward smile.
“Sorry! Didn’t mean to intrude!” she said, putting her hands up.The men didn’t seem bothered, giving her variations of warm smiles.
“Not intruding at all, miss. Is there something we can help you with?” one of them asked.Elestren started to shake her head but paused.
“What’s the ship you are planning to build?”
The men broke into smiles, voices clambering over the other to invite her into their small circle, showing her their blueprint. Elestren couldn’t help but share the enthusiasm with them, excited to hear what they had to say.
She had never seen men show such outward excitement or passion before until she had moved to Water 7. Even then men back on her home island never displayed such explicit emotion. She enjoyed the men she had met, their faces bright even when they disagreed on something.
Elestren had only been amongst their group for no more than fifteen minutes when she had heard her name being called. She raised her head from hunching over the blueprint, looking behind her.Marin was seen waving. “Tren! Over here!”Elestren had completely forgotten about her own group’s mission. She cleared her throat and gave the men a sad smile.“Sorry. My own duty calls. Goodbye!” She waved and turned to catch up with Marin. The men smiled back at her, giving her a wave and departing words back.
Marin gave her a smirk. “You’ve gone and made Jettie look bad, Tren. Now she won’t give us supper.”Elestren snorted at her sarcasm. “How ever will be bear the starvation?”The group wasn’t far from where she was; the port shared by the first dock was just a few yards away. Jettie was seen talking to Paulie, and Ava and Nessa were already making themselves busy fawning over two of the other shipwrights.
As Marin and Elestren approached, Jettie let out a noise of relief. “There you are, Tren! We can't spend our time dilly dallying now! We need to make sure all the lunches and kits get to everyone!” Elestren knew the look in her eye too well by now—there was no question she would get her share of Jettie’s wrath when they got back to the HC.
Elestren put on her best smile. “I’m sure we’ll manage the time, Jettie.”Jettie didn’t have time to give one of her snarling “Snark!”s like she usually did; Paulie was quick to cut between them, facing Elestren. His lip was quirked up, typical cigar wedged by the corner of this mouth. “Tardiness isn’t accepted ‘round here. Don’t matter if you’re a nurse or a shipwright. You ought’a know better, Tren, giving your poor director a scare.”
Elestren knew she had done worse and got less of a punishment for it; Jettie just wanted to look good in front of the men. She still took the challenge, raising her head up in defiance to him. “Thank goodness I don’t follow orders from the likes of you. Who cares about a little lateness when it’s us who come bearing gifts?”
Elestren tried to sound polite as possible. She didn’t want to embarrass Jettie again, but civilities were needed for their position. It was Paulie had no great desire for civilities, especially when his eyes locked onto Elestren’s bare legs, growing three times their size. He quickly glanced at the other girls too, the cigar nearly dropping from his gaping mouth.“What do you think you’re doing dressing like that?! Wearing such scandalous clothing on shipwright property should be illegal!”His voice carried, making the girls nearby cringe from his humiliating words. Elestren clenched her fists as Paulie continued. She was happy she snuck her spandex shorts under her dress. “You should be ashamed of yourselves! Such a tasteless dress code will not be tolerated from-“Paulie suddenly let out a surprised grunt and went flying. He hit a nearby gate, crumpling against the iron and moaning painfully. All eyes locked onto where he had just been standing, seeing Elestren with her foot in the air. It was the look on her face that made everyone take a short inhale; brutish rage had never been a good look on her, especially now.“Elestren!” Jettie squeaked out, horrified at what she had done.Elestren ignored her. She strode over to Paulie’s body and grabbed him by the collar, forcing his face close to hers. She reveled at the blood seeping from his nostrils.“You listen to me, you heartless ape. If you ever utter a single demeaning word to those girls again, I’ll make sure to surgically close that mouth from your slimeball of a face so you have no choice but to smoke your cigars from every other cavity on your body!”
Elestren gave him a sturdy shake, making Paulie wheeze out a breath.
“Do I make myself clear?”Paulie let out a string of indecipherable words, but Elestren thought she might have heard something along the lines of “no problem”.It was good enough for her. She let him drop from her hands, turning on her heel to walk back to the girls. They all stood gathered into each other, fear and mild adoration on their faces.
Marin gave her a grimace. “Damn, Tren. You could’ve impaled him on that gate.”
Elestren flipped her hair off her shoulder. “We’re nurses, one of you could save him. It would serve him right anyway.”Jettie’s growling was advancing on their group. “You insolent brat! What do you think you’re trying to accomplish by committing violence against the vice president?!”
It would be fair to dismiss her back to HC, but seeing as Elestren represented the medical unit, she couldn’t just leave. They still had their job to do. But Elestren did feel some guilt for acting rash; their hospitality center wouldn’t prosper if she continued to be brash against their clientele.
Elestren took a deep breath, trying to center herself.“My! What a powerful kick you have there!” a booming voice exclaimed. The girls looked behind them. Four brawny men of different heights stood around them. One had a mustache with sunglasses; the second was an older man with a beard and chest tattoos—he was currently laughing in joy. The third man had on suspenders and a wife beater, with long black hair and a cute pigeon on his shoulder. The last man stood a little behind the former man, a Galley-La ballcap hiding his face. What drew Elestren in was his nose, protruding from the shadows of his face. It was long and square. These had to have been the foremen of Dock One; no other group exuded as much respect or esteem like the four in front of them. The shirtless, oldest man let out a hearty cackle again. “I’ll say! Never seen Paulie get his ass handed to him by a lady in so long!”
Jettie fell all over herself, sneaking a hand up to unbutton the top of her blouse. “Oh, foremen! It’s an honor to have you all here today! I hope we aren’t delaying or interrupting any of your work!”
The man in sunglasses spoke, his booming voice giving away his identity of the statement from earlier. “Not at all, Miss Jettie. Glad to have our new hospitality center paying a visit!” The girls behind Elestren had started giggling to each other quietly. Jettie introduced the foremen--Lulu, Tilestone, Lucci, and Kaku. As she introduced the girls last, the men seemed to close in on Elestren, smiles adorning their faces, much to her chagrin.“The kicker!” Tilestone had cackled out, shifting a huge hammer on his shoulder to shake her hand.
“Pleasure’s all mine, Miss Elestren. Do you play football?” Lulu asked. Elestren recognized Rob Lucci's name. He was handsome, just like the girls had repeatedly made known, yet Elestren couldn't help the contempt that sparked inside her toward him. He was an enigma. He hadn’t shaken her hand like the others, his eyes hard and observant. Elestren was a little intimidated by his cold nature but refused to let him know that. To beat the awkwardness, her eyes glanced to the pigeon on his shoulder. She smiled at the small tie it wore.“What a lovely bird,” she commented. The bird shifted. “Thank you.”Nothing could have prepared Elestren for that. She nearly jumped out of her bones hearing the scratchy voice come out of the bird’s beak. She looked back and forth between Lucci and the pigeon, unsure of herself.“Ah, don’t be alarmed, but I think your bird spoke.”The bird tilted its head. “I did.”
So she hadn’t been hearing things! Elestren's face broke into a smile as she began laughing.“What a neat trick!” she exclaimed. She eyed Lucci curiously. “Can I pet him?”“Only if you’re gentle,” replied the bird. Elestren couldn’t be upset by Lucci’s lack of speaking; having a talking pigeon seemed wildly more interesting. As Elestren stroked the pigeon, she marveled at the little coos that came out of the bird.“Does he have a name?”
“Rob Lucci.”
Elestren snickered. “I meant you, sweet pigeon.”
The pigeon tilted its head at its owner, meeting Lucci’s eyes. They seemed to have some sort of telepathic conversation before they both turned to look back at Elestren.“Hattori is my name. But I speak for Lucci.”
Elestren met Lucci’s cold eyes. “Are you nonverbal?”
“Something like that,” Hattori replied for him.Elestren hummed in thought. Her final opinion of the man would be on the backburner for now; any charm he contained only resided in the small bird on his shoulder. She smiled sweetly at both of them. “It’s nice to meet you.”Elestren looked over to the back left of Lucci, wanting to meet the last man in the group. He was talking to Nessa, who was chattering away to him. What Elestren hadn’t counted on was meeting Kaku’s eyes immediately despite their conversation; his eyes were glued to her.
Hardly anyone made Elestren take pause; even conventionally attractive men deserved a glance but not a stare. For Elestren, she found herself awestruck at the sight of Kaku. She could stare at him forever. As Nessa noticed Lucci by himself, she made haste to him, leaving Kaku to stand awkwardly alone. Elestren's feet worked on their own accord, dragging her body with her as she magnetized herself to stand in front of Kaku.
He approached her timidly, meeting her halfway.“Hello,” he greeted.Elestren prided herself on her judgment of character. Kaku was handsome and tall, just like the others, but his face and countenance were different. He was sweet. He was gentle. She knew this already.Elestren smiled shyly, a blush creeping up her cheeks. That was a first for her. “Best for last. You must be Kaku.”Kaku’s ears became red, his shy smile mirroring hers. “It’s nice to see you—uh, meet you, rather. Sorry, you haven’t said your name yet.”
Elestren held her hand out, giving him her name. Kaku eagerly took her hand in his, eyes locked onto hers. She glanced down at their joined hands, smirking to herself when Kaku quickly shook them, remembering niceties.
“I’m sorry. I’m acting like a fool,” he said.“You aren’t at all. It’s sweet.”Elestren was surprised to see his ears turn an even deeper shade of red, if that was possible.“You, uh, you have a very impressive kick,” Kaku said, wearing an earnest smile. It suited him. “I’ve never seen someone stand up to Paulie that way.”Elestren let herself laugh. “I’m glad you foremen at least appreciate my effort in humbling your vice president.”“I’m sure whatever he said to you, he deserved the repercussions.”
Elestren snorted, a small flicker of embarrassment at the unladylikeness. “You have no idea.”Kaku shared a secret smile with her. “Oh, I just might.”Elestren couldn’t help but smile warmly. She liked Kaku; he was her favorite of the men.
Kaku's eyes were a deep, dark brown--almost black in the shadows. He studied her face, his smile enhancing his features. "I don't think I've ever seen you around town before. Are you new here?""Sort of. I've been here about four months. My home is on Drum Island." Kaku raised his eyebrows at her. "Only four? I'm surprised I don't recognize you. I feel as if I know mostly everyone in Water 7." "That obvious, huh?" Elestren chuckled nervously, her cheeks warming again. She supposed she did spend most of her time cooped up in the office studying her medical books, save for the occasional night out on the town with Marin and the girls. If she had gotten out more, there could have been the chance of crossing paths with Kaku much sooner than now. "Not at all!" Kaku said, quickly backtracking. "I just meant, uh," his smile turned shy again, "I would have recognized you. You tend to stand out among the others."Elestren found herself inhaling sharply at the way his eyelids drooped, his smile soft and cheeks pink. Was he flirting with her? She snorted defensively in response. "No doubt there I suppose. I almost killed your vice president after all." Kaku laughed, Elestren indulged it. He had a rather nice laugh--joyous and a bit growly, like he wasn't accustomed to it often. Elestren hoped she could make him laugh more.
Lucci began approaching the two of them out of Elestren’s peripherals. She hadn’t realized their hands were still clasped together until her arm fell to her side, void of Kaku’s warmth. Suddenly very nervous, she cleared her throat and excused herself back to her team.
Elestren made sure to keep her hands to herself the duration of the visit. Time was running short, and she had already made a mess of her first impression. Once lunches and first aid kits were given out, and once she gave the dock men a nervous speech about their mission as a hospitality center, the group said their goodbyes and finally made their way back to their unit.
As Elestren waved goodbye to the dock men, her smile turned nervous as she met Kaku’s eyes again. He waved in return, his smile sweet. Marin bumped her shoulder against Elestren’s as she witnessed the exchange.“I can guess which dock man is your favorite,” she teased.Elestren scratched at the lace on her dress again. “Don't know what you mean.""He is very cute. I think there's a connection there."Elestren couldn't help but feed into the comment. "You think so?""Oh come off it. You didn't see the way he practically melted when you smiled at him?"Elestren wet her lips, swallowing hard at the idea of Kaku liking her. He was handsome. But more than handsome, he was soft and kind and gentle. A triple threat to her nervous system, she was sure. Would this make things hard on her? She couldn't be distracted by men now. She was doing so well apart from her peers; she needed a clear head and no connections when she left to go back home. Her people needed her. Her words from earlier rang through her head. No man is allowed to take away your focus.
It was still true. A man couldn't distract her, not now, no matter how soft or kind he was. Elestren realized she had been quiet for a while. She scratched her cheek nonchalantly and gave Marin a cheeky grin. "Pigeons don't melt, last time I checked.”Their laughter echoed off the buildings as they drew near to the HC.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The sun felt nicer on top of the new ship they were building, reflecting the warmth that the wind couldn’t seem to hold onto. It was still blinding through Kaku’s hat as it covered his face.
Their break had been lengthened that day, something about a visit from the new hospitality building and their directive team. Kaku really didn’t mind the extra time; he rarely got a few precious minutes to himself nowadays.Kaku shifted where he lay. He could hear Lulu and Tilestone somewhere below on level ground, talking loudly to each other over the wind. He briefly considered going back to the condominium and taking a proper rest. Their work was mostly done anyway.
Movement shuffled to his left: the sound of flapping wings. Kaku relaxed once again at the familiarity. He had forgotten about his comrade beside him. He let his mind go back to his subconscious wandering, trying to summon back the small crafted daydream. There had been an abundant forest full of trees, large enough to climb. He was alone, the trees a blur in his vision as he sped and weaved through the openings, leaping and climbing to his heart’s content. He was searching for… something. He wasn’t sure what that something was, but he knew he was closing in on it, and it was happening soon.
The chase was beautiful. He enjoyed the solace behind his hunt. He could do as he pleased and could take his time with it. He knew whatever he was searching for was waiting for him at the end of the infinite forest. His chest was tight with adrenaline, his legs winding up to leap several yards to the next tree. He didn’t seem exhausted from the journey; on the contrary, he never felt more alive. It was as if the search was strengthening him, amping up his diligence and mobility in order to complete his end goal. And he would complete it—without a doubt. Kaku’s eyes fluttered softly, slipping further into his peaceful slumber.“AYYEE! KAKU! LUCCI! COME ON DOWN! HOSPITALITY IS HEREEE!”It was nice while it lasted. Tilestone was too loud for his own good, the stupid bastard. Kaku really should have escaped to the condo when he had a chance.Despite the call from below, Kaku didn’t rise just yet; the sun was much too enticing to waste. He stretched his legs out a little longer. He slowly removed his cap from hiding his face, squinting against the harshly bright light. Lucci had yet to open his own eyes, choosing to keep them closed.
Kaku stretched and cracked his neck back to life as he surveyed the newcomers below.“How many of them?” Lucci mumbled lowly.“Four.”Hattori ruffled his feathers against a small current of wind as Lucci continued to rest his eyes.
“Anyone stand out?”Kaku’s eyes traced the group. “No one worth our time. Looks like it’s mostly women.”Lucci didn’t reply; Kaku knew what he was thinking anyhow. The meeting was a good distraction to gather more intel. Blueno’s shift at the bar wouldn’t start until two o’clock; it was a good time as any to meet up and spread out their search.“C’mon you two! Get down here!” Lulu’s booming voice called up to Kaku and Lucci.Kaku acknowledged Lulu with a wave of his hand as Lucci huffed an annoyed breath and sat up. “That oaf is trying my patience.”
Kaku couldn’t find it in him to disagree. He liked them well enough as coworkers, but that’s all they stayed. He longed for the next four years to hurry on by so he could be rid of the discordant shrills of the two burly men.
Despite the annoyance, Kaku straightened. “Might as well get it out of the way now.” Lucci rolled his shoulders and stood up with Kaku. They exchanged a look with the other before leaping from the large ship, landing skillfully to the ground.
Lulu and Tilestone were finishing packing up their equipment. The latter looked up and smirked at the two men in front of him. He nodded his head in the newcomers’ direction. “Looks like Jettie went and got herself a handful of beauties for the new hospitality center! I haven’t seen such lovely ladies in all my years here at Water Seven.”Lulu let out a hearty laugh. “Just what this town needs, more young ladies to block our front entrance!” He rubbed his chin in thought. “Although it would be a nice change of scenery to the fucked up pirates we encounter on the daily.”Kaku conjured a smile, fitting in. “For all you know those girls could be pirates in disguise, Lulu.”Tilestone let out a laugh. “Wouldn’t that be a sight, lad! A handful of beautiful pirate ladies!”
Lulu snickered and looked over his shoulder at the group. “Looks like Paulie beat us to the punch. Hope he doesn’t scare the girls off with his foolery.”
Kaku drew his eyes over to the crowd, noticing Paulie standing rather haughtily in front of one of the girls. He couldn’t make out the girl’s expression, but Paulie’s folded arms and tight shoulders told Kaku everything. Paulie liked to berate anyone within earshot—women, men, it didn’t matter. Kaku wasn’t a great fan of the vice president, but he knew he had to keep up appearances. Working with him didn’t mean he had to like him.Kaku looked back at the girl. Even from a distance, she was pretty--hands on her hips, hair blowing in the wind. He realized he didn't recognize her at all. Kaku let his eyes drift down her bare legs. Many pretty girls hovered by the dock yard; it was nothing new. Most of them came to get a glimpse of Lucci or Paulie, the two favorable of the dockmen. Kaku, being the youngest, wasn't a fan of the attention much, but it was amusing to see Lucci having to bear most of it, the man itching to get away every time. The girl Paulie was talking to was certainly beautiful, and Kaku couldn't help but feel a small pang of jealousy at the attention Paulie was receiving. The man was nothing short of an idiot; it was a wonder he got any women to flock to him at all.Kaku's internalizing was interrupted as he watched the girl clench her fists at Paulie. She seemed angry. Just as Kaku thought it, he watched as the girl hiked up one of her legs and thrust it into Paulie’s face. He shot across the yard toward the iron fence, slamming his back into it and sliding down onto the ground. Lulu, Tilestone, and Lucci all looked over to the scene, their bodies rigid from shock.Kaku parted his lips and glanced back at the girl, a rabid expression on her face. Holy shit. He blinked, stunned into silent adoration.Lulu shifted in his spot, his head turning to Tilestone. “Did she just..?”
“Good God almighty. I think she did!” Tilestone replied, letting out an explosive laugh. The girl stormed over to where Paulie lay on the ground, pulling him up by his collar. She gave him a hard shake, muttering something into his face. Kaku felt something turn in his chest at that. It was amusing to see Paulie get what he deserved, but seeing a pretty girl do it was... oddly refreshing. She dropped Paulie back to the ground and sauntered back to her group.Lulu whistled low. "Well I'll be. That one's got some fire!"Kaku's eyes flickered briefly to Lucci, trying to gauge his reaction. The man's eyes were watching the girl, his face holding his aloofness, yet his eyes were fractionally more alert than normal. Kaku noticed a hair of amusement hidden behind his eyes and something else undecipherable. Perhaps Lucci was just as taken back as Kaku was."Guess that's our cue for introductions!"
Lulu grabbed his tool kit and walked with Tilestone toward the group.
Kaku walked alongside Lucci, his eyes glued to the girl. He could feel sweat trickle under his neck; upon closer inspection, she was in fact too pretty. While Tilestone and Lulu took charge, Kaku felt himself fade to the back. He wasn't sure why he was feeling so sheepish all of the sudden; he was talkative by nature, it shouldn't have been a problem to take the lead in socializing. For some reason, he couldn't be in the girl's sights just yet. He needed to be observant. Who was to say she was a problem for them? What if she tried something like she did with Paulie? He kept his eyes shadowed underneath his hat, honing in on his surroundings. His group was introduced as a whole, and soon the girls were being introduced. Half the men crowded around the pretty girl, their laughs and voices excited.Kaku tried to look more open. It was hard to juggle his civility with his wariness, especially since one of the girls from the group came up to talk to him."Hi Mr. Kaku, I'm Nessa!" she said cheerfully.Kaku smiled politely, returning his hello. He didn't miss the way her eyes darted once in a while to Lucci. It wasn't quite a big surprise. Most women were too scared to approach Lucci, choosing Kaku as a default to get close enough to him. Kaku wasn't interested in the girl named Nessa either; much of his attention had become hooked into the pretty girl just a few feet away. She was talking to Lucci, or rather, Hattori, petting his feathers. Her eyes were bright and lively, far more interested in the bird than the man.Kaku realized Nessa had said something, making him turn to look at her again. "Apologies. What did you say?""Oh! I was just asking if you knew if Lucci is seeing anyone! I heard something recently about-"Kaku's eyes drifted back to Lucci and the girl. He noticed the girl looking around aimlessly, her lively eyes inattentive to Lucci's glare. To Kaku's growing surprise, she seemed almost indifferent to his comrade, almost bored of him. That was certainly a first; even Lucci seemed a bit nonplussed that she wasn't fawning over him. Kaku didn't want to think himself pleased by this, but he was slightly pleased nonetheless. The girl finally met Kaku's eyes. He watched her face light up, her eyes glowing brightly, brighter than the sun. Kaku couldn't help but flush at the look she was giving him. It was the same look most girls gave to Lucci or Paulie. He was never on the receiving end of that look.It was a beautiful look. It made him feel on top of the world, like he was invincible, like no one else mattered.Kaku didn't register Nessa's absence as the girl began walking toward him. The whole world seemed to fade out of his peripherals as the girl became his main focus. He greeted her quietly, hoping his voice didn't waver. The girl smiled sweetly. "Best for last. You must be Kaku."Best for last? Him? He was awfully aware of the sweat producing on the insides of his hands as he reached one out for her to take. He bumbled out something polite, tripping over his words. God, he was making himself look bad. She was so calm and composed, everything he should have been. He even forgot to shake her hand once it was clasped in his. Her skin was smooth, cool against his warm callused one."I'm sorry. I'm acting like a fool."Her smile seemed genuine. "You aren't at all. It's sweet."Jesus. Kaku needed to change the subject lest he become more of a floundering fish in front of her.Conversation flowed easily with Elestren. She was personable and charming yet unpredictable. Kaku liked her a lot, but he wasn't sure what to make of her. This was the same girl he watched shove her foot between Paulie's teeth; surely it wasn't her first time doing this to someone. How could she stand there after doing that and be so... so... unaffected? So beautiful?Kaku kept his face neutral despite his racing thoughts. Perhaps it was a cover of some sort. Was she a spy? Some sort of counterintelligence sent by the government to make sure CP9 was doing their job? It had only been a year since arriving in Water 7; it seemed too early for a report. He decided to test her. It would be best to figure her out now while she was new to town."I don't think I've ever seen you around town before. Are you new here?"Elestren shrugged. "Sort of. I've been here about four months. My home is on Drum Island."Drum Island was a good cover; away from most other islands on the Grand Line. She wasn't slick. "Only four? I'm surprised I don't recognize you. I feel as if I know mostly everyone in Water 7."Elestren's smile turned embarrassed. "That obvious, huh?"Quite obvious."Not at all!" Kaku replied, his features becoming sly and knowing. " I just meant I would have recognized you. You tend to stand out among the others." He was trying to be subtle, but the message was sent. He watched Elestren's cheeks turn pink, her bright eyes widening slightly. She became frozen in her spot.
Got her.
Elestren then snorted loudly and rolled her eyes. "No doubt there I suppose. I almost killed your vice president after all."Kaku wanted to tighten his grip on her hand, to let her know she couldn't change the subject that easily, not when he just found her out. But he could feel the others' eyes on the pair of them, observing.Kaku decided to play along, tilting his head back and laughing gleefully at Elestren's joke. Elestren's smile became genuine again, the blush still on her face. Kaku didn't want to admit it, but it strongly suited her.It was a shame she was what she was.Lucci was approaching the two of them, joining into their circle. Elestren's interest seemed to drop immediately. "Uh, excuse me, gentlemen. I should get back to the others for now." She gave Kaku a warm smile. "It was nice meeting you, Kaku.""Pleasure's all mine, Elestren."Kaku waited until she was a good distance away before murmuring under his breath to Lucci. "Be wary of her."Lucci glanced at him, waiting for him to continue."Something isn't right. She could be a spy."Lucci glanced to Elestren's back before giving a subtle nod. The both of them rejoined the rest of the foremen, blending into the conversation being made.Kaku never let Elestren out of his line of sight. He watched her carefully throughout the afternoon; she filled an effortless role of self-assurance and sweet impeccability to all she interacted with. Kaku was impressed by her dedication; every word she spoke was intricate and graceful. He found himself straddling the line between disappointment and turmoil--despising the idea of her possible role in the government yet wishing on every star out there that she was as saintly and pristine as she seemed to be.The hospitality group said their goodbyes, waving to the foremen as they departed through the dock's doors. Kaku allowed himself to wave goodbye to Elestren, noticing she singled him out with one of her award-winning smiles. The sounds of girlish laughter carried on the wind, even when they were out of sight. Kaku took a deep breath in and out, sucking fresh oxygen into his lungs. The air felt clearer now, no longer putrified by the essence of pretty spies and saccharine words. The men got back to work for the time being, a welcome distraction for Kaku. He needed to think about something else, needed to purge his mind of the meeting. It had only been a few minutes of silence before Paulie came back from his condo, sporting a thick ice pack on his face and emitting a sour aura.Tilestone cackled at the goggled man. "Welcome back, Toothless Wonder!"Paulie shot a nasty glare up at Tilestone, revealing a gap in his bared teeth. "You shut your mouth, you bastard! This isn't a joke!""It isn't?" Lulu questioned. "You look like a fucking Jack-O-Lantern, boy!"Paulie grit his teeth at the two cackling men in front of him. "Laugh all you want, I don't care. That undomesticated little bitch is gonna pay for doing this to me!" He rounded on a small table of blueprints and kicked it, sending supplies everywhere. "Holed up in that stupid office all day and she forgets all her manners!"Lulu couldn't help himself. "Not as hole-d up as that gap in your mouth!""That's it!"
As Tilestone and Lulu nearly fell in their hysterics, Paulie quickly pulled out his rope and began twisting it into action, planning to hurt his coworkers. Lucci was quicker, pummeling into Paulie's body and pinning him to the ground with his foot. His arms held the tangled rope he had rounded in the moment."Calm down, Paulie," Hattori spoke firmly from Lucci's shoulder. "You're becoming unreasonable.""I'm unreasonable?!" Paulie snarled as he stole the rope from Lucci's hands. "Those two beef-heads are the ones who fanned the flame! And that damn brute Elestren had started it-""Quite the contrary," Kaku cut in, staring his eyes down on Paulie. "You were the one who started it. Elestren responded how she saw fit."Kaku never engaged with Paulie's childish tantrums, but it made something inside him itch at the obnoxious way he was speaking. The man was three years older than him yet seemed much younger in mentality. Kaku wished he would just shut up for once.Tilestone hummed out a dangerous noise. "Ah, best you listen to him, Paul. Talkin' that way about Kaku's belle is sore sportsmanship."Kaku's head snapped up at the large man, his eyes wide with shock.Paulie turned his head from the ground to face Tilestone as well. "What're you jibber-jabbering about?""Ah, I forgot! Your ass was out stone cold during introductions!" Tilestone laughed and gave the blonde a wide smirk. "Our young Kaku is sweet on the new doctor!"
Kaku blinked, features frozen over. How did they deduce such a thing about him? Did they understand what he was capable of? He was being reduced to something small, something merely human, joking at his expense about finding a pretty girl enjoyable. It was torture, it was—

Kaku’s paused, a brilliant thought coming to him. Of course. Of course, this was what he needed to do. It all made sense. It almost worked in his favor.

Allowing the confusion to subside, a modest blush came over Kaku’s cheeks. He laughed nervously at the men.

“Cmon, Tilestone. You know that’s not true.”

Tilestone took the bait, waggling his thick eyebrows at him. “Don’t be coy, lad! You picked a delightful girl!”

“Aye! Very strong minded!” Lulu added with a wink. “And a kicker at that.”

Kaku huffed out another chuckle, rubbing his neck timidly. “Well, I don’t know, she doesn’t seem very interested-“

Tilestone and Lulu protested his modesty, exclaiming how truly wonderful Elestren was. Kaku half-heard them, his eyes riveted on Lucci’s hard expression, eyes riotous under his aloof state.

Kaku kept his stare light, hoping to communicate to Lucci about his formidable plan. It would help set the tone for blending in more; what better way to blend in than add some excitement and drama into the mix?

There was no harm in it. It would work.

Paulie interrupted Lucci and Kaku’s telepathic conversation by forcing his body out from under Lucci’s foot.

“No,” he rumbled out. “Kaku, I forbid you to have any kind of contact with that girl. She’s a villain, a right detestable beast!” He wobbled to his feet and pointed a finger in Kaku’s direction.
“She may be easy on the eyes, but you don’t know her like I do. She’s got no kind of ladylike behavior within a hair on her head! You saw what she did to me! She’s brash and rude and completely-”
“I’ve heard enough,” Kaku said, voice firm and unyielding. He met Paulie’s stubborn glare.

“I met her too. What I saw of her I liked. I have no intention of backing down, Paulie. But I suggest you be intuitive with this.” He took a step forward, challenging the man before him.
“Back off of Elestren.”
The room was quiet for a moment. No one was sure what to do or how to respond to Kaku’s sobering severity. Paulie finally let out an embittered grunt and left the yard, hands quick to light up a cigar.

Lulu and Tilestone stayed still while they spoke up, commenting and praising Kaku’s boldness against the vice president and his chivalry standing up for his woman.

Kaku took in a subtle breath, eyes going back to Lucci again. He didn’t seem harsh in his stare anymore, but he still seemed conflicted about Kaku’s brazen choices.

He would explain to his comrade what he was doing later. Lucci would understand and be supportive, like he always had been to him. Their mission would still be completed in a timely manner, and this new connection would help make Kaku more approachable to others.

And the bonus? He got to have a beautiful woman on his arm now.

Sweetest of the flowers a-blooming

In the fragrant vernal days

Is the Lily of the Valley

With its soft, retiring ways.

Well, you chose this humble blossom

As the nurse's emblem flower,

Who grows more like her ideal

Every day and every hour.

Like the Lily of the Valley

In her honesty and worth,

Ah, she blooms in truth and virtue

In the quiet nooks of earth.

Tho' she stands erect in honor

When the heart of mankind bleeds,

Still she hides her own deserving

In the beauty of her deeds.

In the silence of the darkness

Where no eye may see and know,

There her footsteps shod with mercy,

And fleet kindness come and go.

Not amid the sounds of plaudits,

Nor before the garish day,

Does she shed her soul's sweet perfume,

Does she take her gentle way.

But alike her ideal flower,

With its honey-laden breath,

Still her heart blooms forth its beauty

In the valley shades of death.

The Lily of the Valley, Paul Laurence Dunbar

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

It had been a few weeks since meeting the foremen of Dock One.A few weeks since her encounter with Kaku. The hospitality center was now open and in the full swing of things, each department bustling with people and tourists in need of supplies and resources. It was a nice change of pace for Elestren and the girls, who dedicated themselves to their assigned roles. It was especially beneficial for Elestren. She would never admit it to anyone, but Kaku invaded her thoughts often. Since the introductions, she seemed to catch herself day-dreaming about the square-nosed man more often than not. It was a distraction to her work. As soon as she became aware of him plaguing her thoughts, she pushed him aside and tried to focus on the present, brows furrowed and cheeks hot.She doubted she would see Kaku or the others often; they each had a job to do. The shipwrights seemed to have a lengthier amount of work anyway; why would they use their spare time traveling across the town to go to the hospitality center?Elestren couldn't fall into the same trap the other girls around her seemed to be stuck in. She had to get as much experience as possible in the clinic; she couldn't afford the time to daydream or wishfully think about the men on the other side of the city.It had been almost four hours of running around and giving free clinicals, and Elestren’s legs and hands were exhausted. After her 5 o’clock left for the day, she got up and stretched her sore muscles, trying to shake off the pain in her wrists. She hadn’t eaten since lunch and was itching for some sunlight.Cracking her neck, Elestren locked the clinic door behind her and made her way to the cafeteria in search of Marin.
Marin looked about as exhausted as Elestren, her arms and clothes powdered with flour and other bits of food. Seeing her friend, Marin gave a tired smile.
“How’d clinicals go?”
Elestren hummed in reply, sliding into the kitchenette beside her and stealing a small morsel from a leftover pan of apple pie. "Went as expected. Had to turn away some people until tomorrow." She sighed, reaching for more apple pie. "How'd it go here?""Fantastic. Lots of tourists. I didn't expect Water 7 to be such a hotspot for vacations, but I can see why!" Marin took off her apron and used it to wipe the grime off her arms. "I need a shower and a drink.""Ugh. Sounds heavenly."The two girls quietly shared the apple pie before Marin smiled playfully. "Ya know, that one dive bar downtown is having a dance theme tonight."Elestren chewed in consideration. She let Marin speak while she debated her answer. "It's a popular bar; a lot of the tourists were telling me about it. There's a three-day special for anyone who brings a partner, 25 percent off anything on tap!"Elestren liked the sound of that. She wasn't much for beer, but the discount seemed good enough for anything. Besides, she couldn't back out now. She needed to get out more, needed to see more of the city. It would be great to get away for one night of fun.“Sounds good to me!” She dusted her hands on her scrubs, shoving her way off the stool and toward the elevators. "Meet you in the lobby at quarter til 7!"
~
The bar was crowded. The air was pungent with heavy bassed music, the sweet aroma of cheap beer, sweaty bodies, and something greasy and salty. It reminded Elestren briefly of home, when the fishermen would smoke the fish over big piles of burning wood. She remembered rubbing the fish in thick salt and other spices with the other families.Nostalgia making her somber, she allowed Marin to take the lead toward the bar counter. They pushed through the crowds of bodies, avoiding getting splashed by bottles and cups alike while trying to squeeze into an open space.Observing the crowds was a great distraction. The people who weren't crowding the counter were all out on the main dance floor, dancing and moving with a partner. The energy all over the room was electric, making Elestren excited to be out there dancing herself."Thank God the girls aren't old enough to be here!" Marin yelled over the music.
Elestren smirked at her friend. "Do you think that's ever stopped them before?"Marin cackled as the bartender came to stand in front of them at last. He was a large man with hair shaped into horns, amusing the girls greatly. He smiled at the girls.
"What'll it be, ladies?"Marin ordered a local brew called Stout Yagara with an orange slice inside. Elestren ordered something sweeter, some kind of brown ale called Yomitee Snare. As the girls gave their IDs, they turned around to watch the patrons dance. Some were professional, gliding around the floor with expert precision. Some were bouncing around on the balls of their feet, enjoying the rhythm. The girls’ drinks were placed in front of them, the bartender sliding some straws in between.”You ladies touring?”
“No, sir,” Marin spoke. “We’re locals now! We help run the new hospitality center up the road!”
The bartender rubbed his chin. “Makes sense.”Elestren blinked at his comment, searching for her wallet. “Pardon?”“Your drinks were paid for before you even ordered. Said it’s from one hard worker to another!”Marin and Elestren followed the direction he nodded in, their faces lighting up upon seeing the Dock One foremen.Elestren noticed Kaku’s absence sooner than she would’ve liked to admit.”How thoughtful!” Marin exclaimed. She turned to Elestren. “Let’s go thank them!”Elestren followed her friend to their booth, her eyes searching the crowds for Kaku’s familiar ballcap and ginger hair.Lulu and Tilestone were louder than the music, greeting the girls happily. Lucci and Paulie sat on the other side of the booth, both looking unamused. Elestren made brief eye contact with Paulie, noticing the bruising around his mouth with a little guilt.”Fancy seeing you ladies here!” Lulu said, taking a swig of his beer.”We decided to take a night off,” Elestren commented, raising her glass to them. “Thanks for the drinks!”
“Our pleasure!" Lulu moved down farther into the booth. "Care to join us?"Elestren gave a polite smile. "Oh no, that's quite alright! We don't wanna-""Sure!" Marin cut in, plopping down next to Lulu. Elestren smiled awkwardly, noticing Lucci give more space on his side. She took the spot next to him, swirling her drink tentatively."So, uh, where's Kaku tonight?"Lulu smirked. "He's not quite old enough to utilize the discount here."Elestren paused taking a sip, panic settling in. "How old is he?"Tilestone gave a hearty laugh, slapping Lulu on the back of the neck. "Don't go scarin' off potential dates, Lu!" He gave Elestren a wink. "He's nineteen."While Lulu gave a chuckle at Elestren's expense, Marin shot her eyebrows up. "Not quite drinking age then.""Aye. But Blueno don't mind him stopping by now and then! Us dock men get off free in some spaces!"
Elestren gave a small breath of relief, joining in on the laughter. She had assumed Kaku was older with how mature he was. She hoped he would come by tonight, if only for a little while. She took a small sip of her drink, finally trying the flavor. A smoky, sweet substance melted over her tongue, the brew strong and yeasty in the aftertaste. It was delicious.Elestren felt eyes on her. She turned her head and met Lucci's aloof stare. She blinked, eyes drifting to his empty shoulder. "Where's Hattori?"Lucci looked to Lulu to answer the question. "Prob'ly off flying around the city. This place is too crowded and loud for a bird. Best to have him elsewhere when we come for drinks!"Elestren hummed in thought, listening to Marin excitedly discuss the hospitality center's opening day. As she listened, she let her eyes go toward Paulie again. He was chewing the straw from his drinking glass, eyes downcast to the table. Elestren felt another pang of guilt ring through her. Was he still upset about the kick? Had she hurt him that badly? She wanted to send a message across, but hadn't realized it affected him so strongly. An upbeat song came blasting through the bar's Den Den Mushis, making another wave of lively energy raise everyone to their feet. Lulu grabbed Marin's hand. "Let's go dance, sugar!"Marin was swept to the floor, her laugh blending in with the music and other voices. Elestren smiled instantly, the energy infecting her as well. She turned to Lucci nervously. "Uh, you wanna go dance?"Lucci gave her a blank once-over, the small shake of his head final as he turned to take a sip of his whisky."C'mon Lucci! Indulge our new doctor just this once! She ain't got a partner!" Tilestone encouraged.Elestren didn't care much to dance with Lucci either after that, but she wasn't going to back down. Going a more playful route, Elestren gave a smirk in Tilestone's direction. "Maybe he doesn't know how and doesn't want to embarrass himself."Fanning the flame, Elestren patted Lucci on the shoulder condescendingly, making him glare icily down at her. "That's okay, Mr. Lucci. I won't tell the girls back home about your poor dance skills."Tilestone erupted with laughter, almost knocking his drink over. Paulie even seemed to crack a smile, raising his head up from his arm. Elestren took a small sip of her drink. "I'll go ask Lulu and Marin if they don't mind a third-"Elestren let out a squawk as her body was suddenly seized out of the booth and dragged toward the dance floor. She thought for a moment that some invisible force was moving her until she came face to face with Lucci's angry eyes. Once she got her bearings, Elestren smiled innocently up at the man as he twirled her out and back in."Glad to see you rise to the challenge, Mr. Lucci," she commented as she put her arms around his neck. Lucci put his hands on the small of her waist, thumbs digging into her skin as he lifted her into the air. Elestren yelped at the sudden change and Lucci's roughness, giving him an irate glare when he set her down."I was only teasing you. No need to get the claws out, sir."The edge of Lucci's mouth quirked up, the gesture gone as soon as it came. He continued his patronizing stare into her eyes as he twirled and danced with her. Elestren knew he was trying to intimidate her--the reason unbeknownst to her. He wasn't as much of a gentleman as she thought he might be; whatever attracted girls to him had to have been the pretty face alone.Rising to his silent challenge, Elestren didn't falter in her movements or her eye contact. Two could play at that game; if Rob Lucci was trying to scare her, he was not going to get the results he wanted. Elestren kept up with his timing and pace, thankful she had learned to dance at a young age; it seemed to have prepared her for this exact moment in time. One of Lucci's hands grazed her hip accidentally, but Elestren knew better. Her lip pulled up in a snarl, stepping hard on one of his feet "accidentally." Lucci also knew better, mouth tugging up again for another fleeting moment. The song was coming to an end at last, Lucci taking initiative and charitably dipping Elestren. She closed her eyes, allowing herself to finally relax in his arms. Her comfort was short lived, yelping again when Lucci gave her side a hard squeeze. He received another harsh glare as he lifted her back upright."That's quite enough from you," she growled, fixing her dress. She raised her chin, eyes narrowed. "I suppose your dance skills aren't too bad, but your chivalry could use some work. Thank you for the dance."Lucci gave a nod of his head, following Elestren back to their booth. Marin and Lulu were still out on the dance floor waiting for the next song. Lucci slid back into the booth and downed the rest of his whisky, settling back into his broody, quiet self.Elestren still wanted to dance, but Lucci was no longer an option lest he throw her too hard and send her flying through the window. She turned to look at Paulie, who was back to sulking into his drink. Elestren supposed this was a good opportunity to apologize for her behavior the other week."Paulie, wanna dance?"Paulie's head looked up, not expecting the request. He blinked a moment before taking a swig of his drink and standing up to follow Elestren to the dance floor. It was a slower song, much to Elestren's relief. She wouldn't be tossed around like a doll or have to talk loudly over the music. As Paulie gathered her to him, they began a slow sway to the music. Elestren tumbled over the words in her head, debating what she wanted to say to him. She opened her mouth to speak when Paulie beat her to it."I wanna talk to you 'bout something."Elestren blinked. "What is it?"It was Paulie's turn to look conflicted. He gave a tired sigh. "Eh, look. It's about Kaku."Well that was not what Elestren had in mind to talk about. "What about him?""He's just...," Paulie paused before continuing. "He's a kid, ya know? He has a lot to learn about being a shipwright. He doesn't have time to worry about relationships or girls or-""What are you saying, Paulie?" Elestren interrupted, eyebrow raised. "Is there a problem with me finding him likeable?""No, but-""But what?"Paulie gave an exasperated breath out. "You ain't girlfriend material! Kaku's a nice kid, and if you plan on wasting his time or the shipwrights' time by being a distraction, it would be better to sever ties now."Elestren inhaled sharply, the words hurting her more than she let on. She dropped her arms from Paulie's shoulders, taking a step back from him. Paulie realized his mistake, stepping forward. "I-I wasn't trying to--look, you misunderstand me. I just want you to be careful. The things you do, the stuff you wear, you need to-""Maybe it's you who needs to be careful," Elestren growled, fists balling up angrily. She no longer felt remorse about kicking him; maybe he needed a repeat of what happened to really get him back into shape."May I cut in?"Elestren glanced over to the familiar voice, spirits rising at once upon seeing Kaku's friendly face. He had come! Her souring mood dropped at once, forgetting all about Paulie."You may," Elestren answered, putting her hand into Kaku's outstretched one. Some resistance came from behind her, seeing Paulie tighten his grip on her arm. While Paulie and Kaku seemed to have some kind of telepathic battle, Elestren spoke up, her voice stern."Let go of my arm, Paulie."Paulie didn't seem like he wanted to back down. Kaku advanced forward, sidling in front of Elestren and blocking Paulie from her glare. "Paulie," he said dangerously. "I'd be very careful about your next move."It almost sounded like a threat. Elestren watched as Paulie let out a furious scoff and unhanded her arm, turning on his heel and steering toward the bar's exit.Elestren let out a tense breath as Kaku slid in Paulie's spot, circling his arms around her and whisking her around the dance floor. His friendly smile was a sight for sore eyes, making Elestren smile in return."I'm so glad to see you," she admitted shyly.
Kaku's smile grew. "Figured you'd be here with all the celebration going on." He let his smile turn concerned. "Are you okay?""I think so," she replied. "Much better now that you're here." Kaku gave a charming smile at her words. "I'll make sure to keep it that way for as long as I can." Elestren believed him wholeheartedly. Kaku kept her on the dance floor as long as she liked, twirling her and spinning her to her heart's content. The distraction kept her attention away from the dark-haired man slipping from her booth and leaving the bar, her wallet in his pocket, making his way to Iceberg's office.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Kaku opened the door to the back patio, bringing Elestren a bottle of water. He sat down next to her on the bench she was perched on and gave her a small smile. "Didn't know you were such a lightweight or I wouldn't have ordered you more drinks."Elestren giggled, pressing the cold bottle to her flaming cheeks. "I usually don't drink socially, but I suppose I got carried away tonight." Her smile turned embarrassed. "I'm sorry to keep you from your friends."Kaku rested his elbows on his knees. "I see them every day. They'll be alright without me." He shot her a wink. "Besides, why leave a pretty girl like you out here by herself?"Elestren became giggly again at his compliment, hands fumbling with her water bottle.Kaku couldn't help himself, he liked seeing her lose her composure a bit too much. The drunken blush she was wearing fit her well, making her face glow against the outside lights.
Kaku knew he was overdoing it on the compliments; he was waiting for her to let something slip. Even if nothing happened tonight, surely something from her ID would give them a hint as to who she was. Kaku wondered if it was too much to wish she was just a regular girl, caught at the wrong place at the wrong time. He didn't want to remove the possibility, but it would be a sore disappointment if she was deceiving him.Elestren took small sips of her water, shiny eyes looking over at Kaku. He smiled at her. "So, what inspired the name' Elestren?'"Elestren chuckled shyly, her hands fidgeting with the bottle. "My mother was traveling to Drum Island while pregnant with me. The plan was to have me once she and my father hit town, but I came too soon. Delivered me right in the dead of winter in a nearby forest. The only spot not covered in snow was on a bed of fresh winter irises." She smiled warmly at the memory.Kaku watched her reaction. She seemed to get teary-eyed, eyes drifting off to look elsewhere. "I don't have very many memories of my parents, but it's a nice one to think about when I feel like I don't know them. Or myself."
Kaku blinked softly. "What happened to them?"Elestren swallowed. "They died when I was twelve. It was the very start of the epidemic, and doctors were scarce. It was just a matter of waiting for them to die."Kaku continued to watch her dab her eyes, sniffing silently. As he reached into his jacket to get a handkerchief, he thought about her memory. It was a very sweet one; despite her drunken state, it seemed to elicit a reaction out of her. He couldn't possibly assume she made it up or was faking her reaction."Seems like you really miss your parents," Kaku observed, allowing Elestren to take the tissue from him. "It's a beautiful story behind your name.""Thank you," she replied, giving him a watery smile. "I do miss them often. What about your parents? Any memories?"Kaku wasn't expecting the question. He paused, suddenly unsure of himself. He looked away from her and tried to juggle around some words. Should he fabricate a story? Was it worth the trouble going into some elaborate scheme off the top of his head? He was a good liar, but he didn't have the skills for improvisation.Elestren could sense the uncertainty. "I'm sorry. You don't have to answer that.""It's alright. I just-" Kaku stuttered, trying to meet his dilemma halfway. "I never knew my parents. I don't know if they're alive or dead.""Oh," Elestren answered, her small voice empathetic. "I'm so sorry."Kaku wasn't sure if he liked that response. Feeling scrutinized, Kaku cleared his throat. "Don't be. It's been long enough now that I don't care to find out. Life has moved on, and I'm happy with my situation." He managed a smile. A weird feeling was bubbling in his gut at being vague in his answer, but he didn't want to dwell on it. He needed to make sure Elestren did most of the talking.Elestren hummed at his answer. "I guess that's one way of looking at it." She smiled back. "You seem to look at a lot of things positively.""I do my best."Just then Elestren shuddered, hands coming up to rub at her arms. Kaku was glad for the reprieve of conversation, quickly removing his jacket and putting it around Elestren's shoulders."You're such a gentleman despite your age," she giggled, pulling his jacket closer around her.Kaku was taken back by the statement, laughing in spite of himself. "Have you met many scoundrels out there in my age group?"Elestren joined his laughter. "No! You just--you're chivalrous. Lucci seems older than you and even he doesn't have the manners you seem to excel in."Kaku hummed out. "Lucci is just quiet.""And handsy," Elestren added, her brows furrowing.Kaku paused, his own eyebrows knitting together. "Handsy? What do you mean by that?"Elestren flushed at the question. "Sorry. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. My drunkenness has removed my filter.""Did he do something?""Well," Elestren hesitated. "No. He didn't do anything. He was just a bit rough when dancing with me, that's all."Kaku reserved to dwell on that thought for later. He knew Lucci would never act out; he was always calculated in every move or word he spoke. But if Elestren had provoked him, he would need to confront Lucci about it.
The back door swung open, letting out the chattering and music from inside. Elestren's friend had opened the door, her eyes widening at the sight of them."Oh! Am I...interrupting something?" she asked, giving Elestren a cheeky grin."No!" Elestren stuttered out, standing up from the bench. "No. We were, uh, well, I needed some air from all the dancing and drinking."Kaku couldn't remember her friend's name. He stood up regardless, giving the friend a shy smile. "I hope the guys aren't too mad about leaving them behind.""They aren't at all!" the friend said. "Actually, they wanted to turn in for the night. Early day tomorrow for all of us."Kaku checked his watch. It was getting late; it was a quarter til midnight. Elestren gave a sigh, beginning to slip off Kaku's jacket and hand it to him. He wasn't sure why--perhaps it was Elestren's disappointment--but Kaku's mouth was opening before he could stop himself."Why don't I walk you two home?"Elestren gazed up at him. "Are you sure? You don't need to! Marin and I can make the journey okay!"Kaku refrained from looking smug. "I need to keep up that reputation of 'chivalrous despite my age', don't I?"The beaming smile on Elestren's face was well worth it. The friend, Marin, Kaku noted, looked just as delighted. "That would be very chivalrous of you, Mr. Kaku!"

The walk home wasn't long in distance, but they took their time all the same.Marin walked ahead of them, obvious in her plot of giving Kaku and Elestren alone time during the trek. Kaku was semi-grateful; he wasn't too modest to admit to himself that he wanted more time with Elestren. The silence between the two of them was comforting. Kaku thought back to the memory of Elestren's parents and her confession of watching them die. He watched many people die throughout his life, whether it was by his hand or someone else's; it became second nature to him. He found himself wondering what it would be like to watch a loved one die from sickness. It had to have been quite devastating for Elestren, unable to do anything about it.Kaku remembered being the age she had been. At twelve years old, he had finally succeeded in utilizing all of the six powers. It had taken him a little longer than the others to learn them, but they had made him stronger than the rest; just as good as Lucci. While he had been equipped to handle one's life in his hands, Elestren had been suffering the death of her parents.
They both had faced sacrifice--one taking, one letting go. Kaku wasn't sure if that made him better than her, or her better than him. Perhaps they were more alike in some strange way. Life was a feeble thing, it didn't matter if it was a captain of the marines or a parent to a small child. Death was stronger, no matter what.Kaku snapped out of his thoughts when Elestren huddled closer to him, knocking her arm against his. "Berry for your thoughts?" she quietly asked, keeping their conversation away from listening ears.Kaku exhaled a small laugh. In another world, he would have loved to be honest with her. He liked that she was being honest with him, even if she was most likely a spy. She was a nice spy, a pretty spy. If she was with the government, it would make things a little easier as far as jobs go. They might cross paths or work together depending on the mission. But that was an awfully big assumption, even for Kaku."If it's not too weird to say, I was really moved by the story of your parents," he said, deciding to say part of the truth. "I think I might envy you a bit."Elestren's smile was sympathetic. "I'm happy it moved you, but please don't envy me. We both suffered the loss of our parents in our own way, with little to no memories of them." She knocked against his arm again. "Maybe it's the sadness you envy, since I knew my parents and you didn't know yours." Her arm tangled itself into his, curling around his elbow. "It's okay to feel sad about not knowing your parents, Kaku. You're allowed to feel that way."Kaku didn't want to describe the new swarming feeling inside his belly as turmoil, but it was making him feel things nonetheless. Sadness didn't have room in his life; and yet, a hollowness he never felt before was beginning to ache. How could this happen? How could this random girl he had only met a few weeks ago suddenly say something so provoking to him? How could she tell him what to feel and know he would respond to it? He disliked the raw awareness that was thrust upon him. He almost wanted to puke, to purge it out of his system for good.Did she have a devil fruit? Did its magic allow others to feel an emotion by her orders? He resented what she did to him; it almost could be hatred, but Kaku knew better. All Kaku could do was smile as tenderly as he could, hoping it was convincing to the pretty girl against him.Silence took back over their walk, but it wasn't as comforting now. He wanted to be alone with his thoughts, away from pretty mind-readers and her friends. It was a chore to keep any kind of emotion at bay, but it was drilled into him since he joined CP9 to be stone cold. Reacting was prohibited. It shouldn't put his job in jeopardy, but now he wasn't so sure.To his immediate relief, Kaku was finally standing outside the hospitality center. Marin was quick to jog back inside, waving to Kaku over her shoulder. "Thanks for the walk home! Good night!"Kaku was left alone with Elestren. She untangled their arms, her hands fidgeting nervously again. Kaku smiled down at her, her shyness still as sweet as ever. He liked that he made her nervous, despite her tendency to make him just as anxious with her words."Thank you for making sure we got back safely. And thank you for spending time with me tonight," Elestren murmured. "You're very kind.""It was my pleasure."Elestren pulled Kaku's jacket off and handed it to him. "I hope work goes well for you tomorrow. It's supposed to be raining all week.""We have a garage for those kinds of conditions," Kaku explained. "But I hope work goes well for you too."Elestren smiled one last time before turning and making her way to the front doors. Kaku watched her for a moment, her hair waving in the gentle breeze that floated by. She really was beautiful."Elestren!"She turned immediately, as if expecting him to say her name. Kaku swallowed, nerves frazzled. "Are you busy this Saturday?"Elestren blinked, cheeks reddening again. "I have clinical rounds until seven-thirty." Kaku felt mild disappointment at that, but paused when she gave a sweet smile. "But I have Sunday off."Kaku's smile hadn't felt so genuine in so long.

The lights inside Iceberg's administrative building were blinding. Kaku rolled his neck, checking his watch. It was approaching the afternoon, and Kalifa was taking her sweet time getting here. If she didn't arrive in the next fifteen minutes, Kaku would need to let Lucci take on the responsibility of getting Elestren's wallet.Three minutes later, Kalifa's heels were heard clicking down the hallway, announcing her approach. Finally. Lucci and Kaku stood up from the chairs, silently waiting for her.Lucci wasted no time, taking a swift look around. "You got a place we can talk?"Kalifa gestured toward one of Iceberg's meeting rooms, the two men following her and locking the door behind them. Kalifa took out the small wallet and placed it into Kaku's open palm."What did you discover?" he asked.Kalifa gave a sigh. "Nothing worth being wary of. She isn't a spy at all." Another adjustment to her glasses. "She's your average plain Jane. Lived in Drum Island her whole life, fought the resistance against Warpol like everyone else and decided to come here." She gave Kaku a chastising look. "You know I had to do her background check for the hospitality center, right? If I thought she was one for concern, I would have found her out by now."While relief filled his chest, Kaku stayed stoic. "She seemed awfully fidgety when talking to us," Kaku replied, folding his arms. "Made me wonder if there was a reason behind it."Kalifa smirked subtly. "You ever think maybe she likes you and that's why she's nervous?" She mirrored Kaku, folding her arms over her files. "You two don't know anything about women.""This isn't a joking matter," Lucci spat. "She's not a plain Jane, she's intuitive and observant. Dismissing it as just a girl's foolish crush is a rookie mistake. If she were a spy and we didn't clock it, we would've looked bad to Spandam." He shoved his hands in his pockets. "Kaku merely wanted a lead. We followed his gut."Kalifa didn't respond at first, shifting in her spot. "I wasn't trying to offend anyone." She cleared her throat, trying to stay on business. "Like I said, she's as safe as they come. You don't need to worry about her."Lucci took that as their cue to leave, turning on his heel and heading to the door. Kaku stayed behind a beat. "Thanks," he replied lowly to Kalifa, following after Lucci. Sensing Kalifa's hesitance, Lucci stopped, standing still at the door. "One more thing. Do we have a lead on Nico Robin? Or the prints?"Kalifa dropped her gaze down to the files in her hand. "Not yet. Iceberg is vague about such details, and I-"Lucci rounded from the door, making Kalifa flinch at the hard look he was giving her. "It's been a year. You're telling me your incompetence has grown since then?"Kaku glanced at Lucci. Kalifa straightened. "I don't have access to many of his files, you know this. Gaining trust is important if we must try to get any access to information at all.""You have more access to everything since you're the goddamn secretary. You really haven't found anything out since being here?"Kalifa scratched her arm. "There's a good chance Iceberg has an accomplice, someone he trusts to have the prints, or at least the knowledge of the location. That's all I've gathered thus far. Nico Robin is more of a needle in a haystack. She's laid low for several years. Our best bet is checking every pirate crew that crosses this territory." Her glasses were adjusted again, nervously. "I don't mean to disappoint you, Lucci.""Hurry it along," Lucci ordered, hand unlocking the door. "We don't have that long to get everything we can." Kaku followed Lucci out into the hall, leaving Kalifa behind in the office space. As the two of them stepped into the elevator, Kaku finally spoke. "I understand time is of the essence, but you don't have to be cruel."Lucci kept his eyes straight ahead. "She has more free time than we do. And screw her morals on trust, she can easily break into Iceberg's safe. She's done worse for far less in past missions."
He rolled his shoulders back, careful not to move Hattori too much. "Fortunately now that we don't have the interference of a possible spy, our job will be much easier. You can stop pretending to like her."Kaku didn't reply. He didn't want to go against orders, but he couldn't cancel on his afternoon plans with Elestren.Lucci could see right through his partner. "Are you still keeping up the act?"Kaku thought about his next few words. "It might be beneficial to keep some kind of connection going. People won't tend to suspect us if a potential relationship is blossoming."Lucci didn't give his reaction away, staying quiet for a moment. Kaku was second-guessing himself; perhaps Lucci thought he was falling victim to Elestren's charms. Kaku still had a level head in the game. He wouldn't let her get in the way of his job. He knew what was at stake. Before the bell dinged for the ground floor, Lucci spoke at last. "Stay diligent in the mission. That's all I'll say on the matter."It was good enough for Kaku. They were partners for a reason; he was sure Lucci wouldn't doubt him. They exited the building, both turning in different directions, one toward Dock One and the other toward the hospitality center.
~
The wind was tantalizing against Kaku's features, re-energizing him and raising his mood. He skillfully hopped the buildings' rooftops, closing in on his destination. As he swiftly flipped off the building across the street, he landed gracefully in front of the entrance. He brushed back his windblown hair, fixing his ball cap.He didn't want to appear nervous, but he knew the adrenaline racing through his blood wasn't just from the jump. He took a deep breath in and entered the hospitality center, hoping he looked composed and relaxed. The living quarters above the center weren't very big; the hall was much smaller than the hallway from Iceberg's admin building. Kaku swallowed thickly as he made his way to the fourth door on the left, reaching under his ball cap and wiping away some fallen sweat.Elestren answered his knock, her expression still in duress from a few days ago."Look what I found," Kaku said cheerfully, presenting her wallet to her.Elestren gasped sharply, snatching her wallet out of his hand. "You found it! I can't believe it! Where? Where was it?"Kaku strolled into her flat, smile a bit haughty. "Blueno said he found it under the counter during one of the weekly cleans. It could have fallen out of your bag and got kicked underneath from the crowd of people last week."Elestren sighed as she rifled through the wallet's contents, making sure everything was in it. "It makes no sense. I could have sworn I had it in my purse the whole time. I didn't even pay for anything! I only used it to get my ID out!"Kaku shrugged. "Things work out in mysterious ways. The good news is that we found it! You won't have to stress about it anymore."Elestren finally smiled, relaxing for the first time since she discovered her wallet missing. "You're right. Thank you so much for bringing it back! You're a real hero." She grabbed Kaku's arm and squeezed gently.Kaku smiled back. "I do my best." He nudged her arm in turn. "You ready to go?""Ready as ever!" She slipped her wallet into her purse and followed Kaku out the door. "So where's this special place you're taking me?""You'll see," Kaku said, leading her out of the lobby and into the outside air. Kaku stretched his arms a bit, along with his legs; he would need the extra elasticity if he was going to be carrying more weight."Is it a far walk?" Elestren asked, watching him stretch. "I think we have some bicycles in the storage room.""No need for bikes when I'm around," Kaku replied, giving her a smug grin. "Just hop on my back!"Elestren blinked. "I don't understand.""You will soon enough," Kaku said as she climbed on. "Just hold on tight, and try not to scream if you can help it.""Scream? Why would I scr-EEEEK!"Kaku took off like a flash, feet hitting the pavement faster than raindrops. He wasn't as fast as he usually was in the shave power, the added weight of Elestren slowing him down. But he was undeterred as he built up for his massive first lunge toward one of the buildings. He felt his body begin to wind, the familiar pull and spring forming inside his calves and quads. Pushing down into his feet, he sprung into his moonwalk power, agilely leaping toward the rooftop.Elestren squealed at the jump, pushing her face into Kaku's shoulder to muffle the scream.
Kaku surged through his moonwalk across rooftops, his smile wide and carefree. He could still feel Elestren hiding her face. "Open your eyes, Elestren!""I-I'd rather not!" she yelled shakily back over the whistling wind.Kaku laughed. "I won't drop you! I promise! You have a great view from up here!"Kaku leapt from each of the rooftops, some making him fly for longer periods of distance. He noticed Elestren finally open her eyes when she let out a squeaky gasp and tighten her hold on him. They finally had reached their destination for lunch, Kaku slowing down his jumps and taking a small bound toward the pavement. He landed sturdily on his two feet, becoming lots gentler as he maneuvered Elestren’s shaky body from around his torso.
Elestren’s hair was wind blown, and Kaku chuckled as he helped her smooth it back to normal.
“S-So, the rumors are true,” Elestren panted out.
Kaku raised an eyebrow at her. “What rumors?”Elestren wobbled a bit on her feet, taking Kaku’s hand when he offered it to her. “People calling you the ‘Mountain Wind’. They said you can fly long distances and land powerfully.” Her smile was weak. “I just thought it was a metaphor for having cold skin or something.”Kaku couldn’t help himself; his laugh echoed off the stone buildings. He had never heard someone word the metaphor like that—it was a wonder that Elestren could make something so light of a strong nickname. It was amusing yet sweet. Kaku hadn’t laughed, really laughed, at something in so long.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Elestren had never seen so many options for sushi.
Kaku had chosen a great place for them to have lunch, claiming it was one of his favorite places to eat in Water 7. Elestren was nervous about trying new foods, but as soon as their trays came out, she was quick to pick up her chopsticks and try some of Kaku's first.Bursts of savory and sweet melted on her tongue, paired magnificently together. Kaku chuckled at her reaction. "Told ya the Gunkan was delicious.""I believed you the first time," Elestren teased, taking another off his plate.Kaku copied her, taking one of her Nazerushi. He examined it first. "I don't think I've tried one of these before. You said this is popular on Drum Island?""Oh yes! We start pickling the fish for it during the harshest winter months, then we prepare it for the Winter Solstice festival. It's considered a delicacy for big events." Elestren fondly remembered hating the acidic smell as a kid once the fermenting lid was taken off.She watched Kaku take a bite, smirking when his eyebrows raised and hid behind the brim of his Galley-La cap. He wrinkled his long nose. "Well, not my cup of tea. But I'm sure Drum Island prepares it better than here."Elestren took a bite herself and ruminated on it. She could taste the familiar ginger and sake, frowning slightly at what was lacking. "Could use some more salt, and the rice definitely could have been cooked longer with the kombu."Kaku gave her a small smile. "You seem to know your stuff very well."Elestren returned the smile. "A Drum Island native should always be strict with a cultural delicacy like Nazerushi. It's our pride and joy!" She picked up another roll, softening her features. "What about you? What kind of foods are popular in your home?" She paused in thought. "Now that I think about it, I don't think I ever asked you where you're from."As she chewed, she waited for Kaku to answer. Kaku seemed to hesitate, that same look on his face from the night at the bar: like he was trapped in a corner. Elestren blinked at him, wondering why he appeared so reluctant. Why was he afraid to tell her things about his life?Trying not to assume the worst, she cleared her throat and shifted minimally in her seat. "Can I ask you a more honest question?"Kaku's eyes met hers. "Of course."She tried to find her words carefully. "Are you not used to telling people about yourself?"Kaku looked away from her again. "I...am. But not for the reason you may be thinking.""I do believe you're a modest guy," Elestren said, smiling briefly before turning somber, "but I fear I'm upsetting you by asking questions about your past. It makes me wonder if something I said or asked has invaded your privacy."Kaku sighed and moved his sushi around his plate, not quite seeing the rolls. "I admit, I am a very private person. I'm not used to someone being so--adamant about wanting to know me personally. Only very few people have gotten that privilege."Elestren supposed she understood to a degree. But was it a crime to want to know the person you're potentially interested in? Had he ever encountered a woman who liked him enough to ask about him? She wanted to know more, wanted to know everything about him--well, anything he would giver her anyway. But the last thing she wanted was to make him uncomfortable.Perhaps he valued trust quite a bit more than others. This was a good thing, Elestren decided. He was cautious about who he let in his life. She and Kaku had only met less than a month ago; why should she rush things?Elestren straightened, more confident in her resolve. "I'll be honest as well. What I've seen of you I really like, and it's only made me desire to know more of you. However, I can see your privacy is of utmost importance. I'd be happy to learn more about you in a way that makes you happy and won't cross any boundaries."Kaku's expression was hard to read. His eyes seemed blank yet held an underlying tone of surprise. Elestren wasn't sure why he reacted that way; did what she say make him upset again? Was she chipping away at any remaining trust he had in her?Suddenly afraid of that answer, Elestren was quick to speak. "What if I ask some general questions and you can pass if they're too personal?"Kaku blinked, snapping out of his reverie. "Oh. Uh, sorry. I didn't mean to zone out there." He conjured up a friendly smile. "Okay, let's do that!"Elestren was unsure of Kaku's authenticity. If she had upset him, he should be honest about it. However, since she had suggested the little game, she couldn't back down now. Swallowing down her worries, Elestren thought up some questions."What's your favorite color?"Kaku was quick to answer. "Blue."This encouraged Elestren. "Favorite food?""Castella.""What's that?""It's a type of dessert." Kaku smiled sweetly. "I think I know where I'll take you on our next date."Elestren stopped breathing. Date? He considered this and their next a date? Elestren's face began to burn up, fumbling to get a quick sip of water. Kaku seemed visibly amused by her new reaction, making Elestren more flustered. "O-Okay, uh, favorite hobby?"Kaku rubbed his chin. "I like jumping around the town rooftops. It's quite grounding for me, especially after a long day of work. But I also don't mind fishing here and there."Elestren smiled, happy he wasn't being as vague anymore. "Sounds fun to me. What games did you used to play as a kid?"Kaku went blank again in record timing. "Pass."Elestren took note of it; she didn't want to have to avoid questions about his childhood, but maybe she could rephrase her questions more pleasantly. "Sure. Uh, when's your birthday?""August 7th."Elestren and Kaku spent the rest of their afternoon playing the game, one asking while the other answered. Sometimes Elestren would answer a question he passed on, and Kaku would take over asking questions.Elestren knew Kaku was a bit on edge from some of the questions he passed; it made her feel worse when he would tense up and go blank, like a robot. She wished she never had suggested the game to him; it was almost worse to have him snap into a state of friendliness on command. He seemed uninterested in doing it, more so less interested in her. They walked from the restaurant back toward the hospitality center, Kaku agreeing to wait for Elestren's squeamishness of heights to settle before hopping with her from building to building. As they walked in silence, a break from questions, Elestren decided it was a good time to share her thoughts."Uh, Kaku?"Kaku paused his walking, looking down at her.Elestren struggled with what to say, her hands smoothing down the skirt of her dress. "Look, I know some of my questions made you upset. I'm sorry if it seemed like I was prying into your personal life. If this makes you want to keep your distance from me, I won't be mad at you." Feeling tears prickle at the corners of her eyes, Elestren quickly looked to a flower cart a few feet away, trying to focus on the colors and not her building emotions.Kaku shifted in her peripherals. "Keep my distance? Why on earth would I do that?"Elestren forced her eyes to meet his worried ones. "I can see that you...tend to go elsewhere when I say something provoking." She watched Kaku's expression flicker into something a little perplexed, but there was a battle of trying to keep the stoicism at bay.She sighed. "I hadn't taken into account that your past is a vulnerable topic of discussion. I suppose that's my fault for being blind. I can do most of the talking if it will make you more secure in our...friendship."Kaku's throat bobbed against his jacket collar. He blinked down at Elestren, making her observe his features closely, anything to make her not dwell on the pounding in her chest or the possibility of losing him so soon like this.Kaku had long eyelashes, something she never noticed before. He also had a small dash of light freckles dusted along his long nose. It was charming, seeing these features up close. It was a wonder the girls didn't fawn over him instead of Lucci; he was lovely.Kaku's eyes hooded slightly, a small exhale leaving his lips. "Why don't I take us somewhere?"Elestren's brows furrowed. "Where to?""Trust me," Kaku murmured, brushing a piece of hair back behind her ear. Elestren stopped breathing; the light brush of his hand against her had made something foreign and riotous unlock within her chest. It was bubbling up her throat and almost came bursting out of her mouth, but her lips stayed clamped shut. Squealing and giggling like the girls did back at the center would be a sure fire way to lose Kaku for good.Elestren sighed out, drifting toward Kaku's lowered back. She did trust him; she'd trust him with anything. As Kaku zipped past the flower stand, he launched them toward a different direction, hopping off the buildings. Elestren shut her eyes, trying to breathe against the cord-like snap of wind zooming past her. As they came to a slow a few minutes later, Elestren opened one eye to see their approach of the shipyard.
It looked like a different section she hadn't been to yet. The ships and boats that lined the perimeter were all finished, their coats shining and bodies massive. Kaku leapt onto a big wooden one, helping Elestren climb off his back like before."Where are we?" she asked."The ships we finished that are used for sale. Some were based on requests and some were from blueprints invented by Paulie or Iceberg." He smiled as he looked around the one they landed on. "This one I helped finish when I first got hired. It's my favorite design thus far."It was a beautiful ship. It was sturdy and rigid, needing only a finishing touch of life by its buyer. Elestren never considered sailing through something hazardous like the Grand Line; she would leave that to the professionals. But it would be fun to be aboard a ship and see what adventure had in store for the crew.Elestren joined Kaku as he sat down on the main deck. He fidgeted with a lace on his sneaker; Elestren could only assume he was summoning an answer for her from earlier. She listened to the slight whistle of wind blowing around them and the distant squawking of sea birds. It was peaceful up here, away from people and responsibilities.Kaku finally spoke, his voice softer. "I'm sorry I've been vague in my answers. I've never been great with sharing details of my life. Not just with you, but with the other foremen as well. I-" He paused, looking out at the waves surrounding the island, "I was taught at a very young age to be scarce with reactions, words, body language, facial expressions, what have you. It's often been a challenge for those I....wish to grow closer to."He took another pause, mentally sorting something out in his head. When he looked at her, his smile was somber. "I like you too. A lot. I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt on how I talk about my past. But, I don't think I can get on that level of vulnerability quite yet." He scooted closer to her. "You just might have to be okay with me being vague on most of my life. That alright?"Elestren blinked in wonder, nodding her head as she considered his answer. "Yes. I can respect that. Do you want me to stop asking you questions?""No, I really liked our game," he replied, his smile bigger. He knocked into her arm playfully. "Why did you think I would keep my distance after all of our encounters together?"Elestren swallowed, her chest tightening. "I-I'm not sure. I just like talking to you, and I like learning about you and what you have to say, and I-I-. . ." She trailed off, embarrassment catching up to her tenfold. "I'm rambling."Kaku let out a pleasant laugh, reaching into his pocket and giving something to her. Elestren gawked at the pretty flower; it was one from the flower cart back in town, one of the bright colorful ones. She hadn't seen him take one as they ran past it."I like talking to you too, flower."Elestren bit down on her cheek to keep from smiling like an idiot, eyes watery as she gave Kaku a squeaky thank-you.Kaku laid down next to her, folding his hands behind his head, his eyes gazing at her. "So, what's your favorite color?"Elestren kept her eyes on the flower, missing the stars in Kaku's eyes. "Lavender."
~
Elestren rubbed her hands on her shorts, palms sweaty from Paulie's glaring. He was placed directly across from her, eyes digging into her skin like she was offending him--which was likely given the length of her shorts. Paulie had been acting weird all month; Elestren wasn't sure what his problem was. If he wasn't making her feel self-conscious of her outfit, he was making her feel awful about hanging around Kaku.It had to be what he was upset about. She didn't see why he cared so much. Kaku was only two years younger than her; it wasn't such a vicious age gap. But Elestren knew it wasn't just about age. Paulie had some kind of vendetta against her spending most of her time with one of his dock men. It was most peculiar. She could only assume it was his duty as lead foreman to make sure his workers stayed focused on their job; the reason was weak at best.Iceberg and his blonde, leggy assistant entered the office to begin the monthly town meeting; Elestren let out a breath at finally being rid of Paulie's harsh glare. She tried to focus on Iceberg's words as he greeted everyone."Good evening, everyone. I'll keep this short and concise as it is late in the day and everyone still needs to get home for dinner." His assistant handed him some notecards. "Some current updates and announcements: the small area of land by Zone 4 was approved for public Yagara recreation, and while the bylaw is passed, we still need some volunteers to oversee that area to make sure it's keeping safety regulations. Any zone leaders want to volunteer for that?"Iceberg continued to push through the announcements, making sure everyone was up to date on locations and new bylaws. Iceberg finally took a breath and became a little more serious in countenance.
"Moving onto what has been on everyone's mind, let's discuss this year's Agua Laguna storm." There was a small ripple around the room as everyone adjusted in their seats and muttered in troubled voices."I'm sure most of you have noticed the tides have been more distant this last week. Our weather expert has predicted that the storm should hit in about a month. It is crucial that we give everyone options for shelter. That being said," Iceberg's eyes looked over to Jettie and Elestren, "staff at our new hospitality center have made adjustments for the upcoming storm." Iceberg gestured for the two ladies to stand.Jettie stood up to address the room, giving a brief speech on what rooms would be available in the higher-level lodging, along with the extra safety rooms for overflow. Elestren stood awkwardly next to her, smoothing down her shorts again. As Jettie began going over provisions, donations, and the need for volunteers, Elestren accidentally met the eyes of Iceberg's assistant. She was already looking at Elestren, her eyes calculating and observant.Elestren blinked, suddenly unsure of herself. She didn't know many of Iceberg's staff; he had many people he relied on. The blonde assistant seemed to be his shadow through everything, hardly making herself known without him. Elestren wasn't sure why she was looking at her so coldly now.Jettie was finally done speaking and took a seat, bringing down Elestren with her. She was slightly grateful; she had been too distracted by the assistant to think about the world around her. She settled back against her chair as Iceberg went over a few more shelters and tips for preparation of the storm. After leaving room for questions at the end, the meeting was finally over.Elestren stood and followed Jettie toward the exit when a flash of blonde appeared in her path, making her screech to a halt.A manicured hand was thrust toward her. "You must be Elestren, the hospitality nurse. I've been wanting to properly meet you for some time."Elestren blinked, her reflection in the assistant's glasses appearing small and frightened. She clasped her hand into the assistant's. "Yes, that would be me." She tried a meek smile. The assistant's returned smile was much more convincing. "Kalifa, Mayor Iceberg's secretary. I've heard many things about you."Anxiety sparked into Elestren's veins. "Ah, let's hope Iceberg has good things to say."Kalifa was not amused; Elestren felt worse at making the joke. "I don't think he knows much of you." Her smile turned wicked. "But I know others that do."Elestren blinked again, taken back by the cold yet friendly exterior of the assistant. She was less sure of her personality upon meeting her. Did she know something about her that she herself didn't? Was she trying to intimidate her?"Kalifa," came a gruff voice to their left.
Iceberg approached the two of them, petting something small and white in his breast pocket. "I need lists of shelter options printed out for the town bulletins. And bring me a cappuccino. Extra foam and-""-Two sugars. Right away sir," Kalifa finished as Iceberg disappeared into the hall. Kalifa adjusted her glasses, her smile polite. "Looks like that is my cue to leave."Elestren tried to smile a bit more genuinely. "No problem. It was nice meeting you.""You as well, Elestren." Kalifa's heels clicked as she turned to head into the hallway.Elestren was left with more questions than answers as the assistant left her standing there. As much as she wanted to believe in the good of people, she felt somewhat hesitant on the intent of her new acquaintance. She wasn't sure what she wanted from her.
~
The advancing approach of the Agua Laguna storm had turned the town into a frenzy.People were stocking up on plywood, rocks, nails, food, storage bins, portable fire pits, lighters and fluid, blankets, and the like. It was as if everyone was preparing for an apocalypse.Elestren would have worried more if she wasn't so busy with preparing the hospitality center for tourists and locals to stay for a while. The sign-up sheets had been filled up within two days, and the overflow rooms were almost too full. Families with small children were prioritized, along with the volunteers helping with overflow.Elestren rarely had clinic duties during the few weeks; not counting the hundreds of tetanus shots given, she was mainly assisting Jettie with bigger task work or helping the girls in their departments. There was no time for any kind of leisure or nights off; the main focus was to get the hospitality center as ready as it could be.Meal plans were made and scheduled for the treacherous week of waiting. Elestren and Marin had slaved over pots and pans for three days straight; boiling hot water couldn't wash out the grease stains left behind on their shirts and pants. The recreation and clothing departments weren't as hectic as the week of the Agua Laguna was approaching. But that didn't mean things weren't hectic as it was. They were now in the final two-day stretch; the storm would hit any hour, and time was precious. Elestren felt pulled in every direction. She, Marin, and Ava tried to get provisions under way while Jettie managed and directed the lodging with Nessa.Elestren, arms full of fresh bedding, leaned against the wall of the elevator, closing her eyes for a moment to catch her breath. She was getting lightheaded; she wasn't sure when she had a drink of water last, let alone food. She remembered drinking coffee that morning before the demands of the day caught up to her.As the doors opened, Elestren wobbled slightly as she balanced the load in her arms. She strained her neck around the pile to see where she was going, nearly colliding with someone on the other side of her. She struggled to keep hold of the bedding, the other person clasping onto her arms to steady her."Sorry!" she wheezed out, hoisting the load up higher. "If you're looking for lodging, it'll be on the fifth floor! Miss Jettie is checking people in now!""Is that you, flower?" a familiar voice questioned.Elestren nearly dropped the bedding again, spirits rising as Kaku's sweet face came into view. God, how she missed that face."I'm so glad it's you!" she exclaimed. She missed seeing him the last three weeks. The busyness had kept her from seeing him, and she was due for some much needed time with him. "What brings you here? Are you staying in the lodging?""Let me help you with that," Kaku offered, taking the bedding and holding it effortlessly. Elestren led the way for him as they walked. "The dock condominiums are far up enough to give us shelter from the storm. That's where we'll be setting up camp.""Looks like you lucked out," Elestren said, wiping her forehead. "We had to turn away a lot of people today. It's full everywhere else." Elestren felt her heart sink again at remembering the panic on everyone's faces. Some had to scramble for extra train tickets to get to a safer island. She rubbed her arm, trying to push the guilt away. "Are you volunteering?""No. Goodness, I hope I don’t sound horrible saying that,” Kaku replied, pausing to give her a shy smile. "I mainly came by to see you. I missed seeing you lately."Elestren wanted to knock the bedding out of his hands to give him a big hug. It was such a sweet gesture to come see her before the storm, knowing there wouldn't be many chances of seeing each other in the aftermath. Her cheeks became warm. “I missed seeing you too. It’s been such a long-“”There you are!” came a shrill voice down the hall.
Elestren tried not to groan as Jettie came jogging to meet her. “We need more blankets for the fourth floor! The last of the sheets were used to mop up the leak in the lobby!” She let out an angry growl. “Damn this rain.”Before Elestren could react to her report, Kaku peeked over the bedding. “There’s a leak in the lobby?”Jettie made a noise of exclamation at seeing a dock man in front of her. “Mister Kaku! What a wonderful surprise!” Her brows furrowed, fussing at the bedding in his hands. “Why do you have so much bedding? Is Tren slacking in her duties?”Elestren made a noise of complaint, her face boiling at the blame being thrust upon her.
“Not at all, ma’am,” Kaku answered with ease. “I’m here to volunteer!” He shot Elestren a secret wink before continuing. "Elestren was showing me where to take all this bedding. As soon as I’m done I’ll come look at that leak for you! It might be an easy fix.”
Jettie fell over herself in a fit of nervous giggles. “You’d do that, Mister Kaku? You’re such a gentleman! You’re truly our savior!”
Kaku gave her a charitable smile. “Just here to help, ma’am.”
Elestren barely heard Jettie mumble more orders for her before she scurried off elsewhere. She was fixated on Kaku’s face, watching his shining-armor smile fade gradually. She felt embarrassed. “I’m sorry I dragged you into my mess. You don’t need to help if you have other things to do today.”Kaku turned to look at her, his mouth twitching up into a smirk. “You’re not dragging me, I offered. Besides,” his smirk grew, “I’m here for you, aren’t I? It’s worth it.”Elestren swooned internally. Kaku was so great at making her feel special—effortlessly so. She shyly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and wobbled ahead, feet unsteady.”We aren’t far from the lodging on this floor. Just around the corner.””Lead the way, flower.”Elestren stumbled over her feet again, missing the small smile directed at her back.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Kaku didn't really miss her.He might not have been used to such sweet company in a while; and she was pretty; and she made him feel like he was born of the sun; and she asked him lots of intricate questions to get to know him better; not to mention she was such a kind person. But he didn't miss her.Elestren was becoming a problem. Kaku enjoyed her, thus becoming too dependent on her to entertain him. Why should he consider going to visit her with the storm coming? Why should he consider going to visit her in general? Kaku couldn't stray from the mission, physically or mentally, Lucci often reminded him.He needed something else to keep his mind from wandering. He was doing fine before meeting Elestren, what was a few weeks without seeing her?
Kaku could feel something inside him twinge. It had been almost a month since he'd seen her last, which had made him face his predicament at hand.He didn't miss her.He just...needed to get out of the condo. He would be cooped up in here with the other foremen for the next few days, and it made sense to consider getting some fresh air.Standing up from his spot on the sofa, Kaku put on his sneakers and left his dorm. He mapped out where he would go in his head--he'd hop around town, check to see how people were faring the advancing storm, maybe get some sushi to-go, then head back to the condos before evening hit. It seemed like a good plan; it would get him out of his head.Kaku passed Lucci on the way to the elevators, the dark-haired man removing his hat and shaking the rain from it."Where are you off to?" Hattori asked from his shoulder, shaking his feathers."Need some air. I'll be back in a jiffy." Kaku pressed the elevator button, sensing Lucci's eyes on him. Kaku turned to look back at his comrade, seeing the indifference in the man's eyes.Lucci didn't have to say it; Kaku knew what he was thinking.Kaku refused to be defensive of where he spent his time. And why should he be? He wasn't going to see Elestren; Kaku didn't have anything to defend. He would prove him wrong when he returned in less than an hour.As the elevator doors closed, the last thing he saw was the subtle squint of Lucci's eyes. Kaku rolled his shoulders. He was sensible and responsible; he wouldn't let his comrade down.
~
Kaku knew the minute he hopped the town buildings that his legs would carry him to the hospitality center. He shouldn't have caved to temptation. Now he couldn't leave; the sweet girl ahead of him had him in her clutches. Shifting the bedding in his arms, he forced himself to swallow down his guilt and disappointment. He could still get back to the condo before the evening. Once the leak in the lobby was tended to, he could say goodbye and head back. Elestren might be sad, but he knew she wouldn't be too upset with him. She was kind and forgiving. Perhaps he would kiss her hand or call her by his little nickname so that she would blush that pretty rose color again, give her something to think about during the storm.Elestren unlocked a door farther down the hallway. It was a huge room, bigger than a presidential suite, with an extra sliding door in the back that extended the space. Kaku followed Elestren to the sliding door while looking around. "This an extra lodging area?""Yes. This is usually where we'd hold recreational activities, but we need all the space we can use." Elestren slid the door to the other side, walking toward various stacks of towels and blankets. "We can set the bedding here. We'll start setting up once Jettie gets the rest of the volunteers together."Kaku obeyed, careful not to let any of the bedding fall from its height. Elestren took some of the blankets and extra pillows onto the ground, arranging them into a small nest. She contemplated how her makeshift bed, talking to herself lowly as she sat on her knees and sorted her arrangement.Kaku blinked down at her, eyes darting away swiftly and turning around to face the other wall.He was a gentleman. He would never dare look at a girl longer than necessary, whether she wanted him to or not. He wasn't going to start now, especially when said girl was on her hands and knees fixing a bed space, the arch of her back putting her in a particularly compromising position. But he had seen her regardless, just enough to make a hot, lingering flush crawl up his neck and to the tips of his ears. He felt suddenly too warm in his jacket, itching to take it off and throw it. He needed to get the hell out of this room."I think I'll head to the lobby and look at that leak," Kaku said a bit too loudly, forcing himself to move his feet."Oh right. Thanks again for offering!" Elestren called after him, oblivious to the internal disgust Kaku was feeling. He didn't let himself breathe until he was behind the elevator doors by himself. He let out a small sigh, taking off his ball cap and fanning his hot face. He felt like a proper creep. How could he think of Elestren like that? He hadn't dwelt on the idea of her being promiscuous in any way; she hadn't given him reason to, and even then, Kaku had self-control. He wanted to respect her.Yet, something had triggered inside of him at the sight of her position. He wanted to keep looking, he wanted to stare. He wanted to...to-The ding of the elevator floor cut Kaku's impulsive thoughts from festering. Slamming his ball cap back on, Kaku tried to look resolute as he stiffly marched to the main lobby. He refused to let his mind wander. Elestren hadn't meant to do it on purpose; she was doing her job. And he had a job to do as well. Once the leak was fixed he would get out of there and back into his room, away from the pretty girl and the overflowing piles of bedding.
~
Kaku managed to seal off the leak before it turned worse. The rain had started coming down in droves since he arrived at the hospitality center, and with the winds picking up, it seemed like Agua Laguna arrived a couple days early.Kaku watched sheets of rain pelt the windows, his resolve to leave slowly draining away. He shouldn't be outside in the middle of this weather; despite his strength and endurance, he didn't want to end up swept under a high tide. He might have to stay inside the center until the worst of it was over. This realization made Kaku feel disappointment in himself. Why hadn't he just taken his walk like he planned? Why did he have to go right into the open trap? Why couldn't he seem to control himself around her?Perhaps she did have some kind Devil Fruit he didn't know about; one that broke down even the strongest wills of men. He would need to confront Kalifa again, make sure he was the one to go through her background file to know everything. He couldn't bend to her will so easily like this.Swallowing hard, Kaku turned on his heel and made his way to the front entrance. Damn the storm and hide tide, he would brave the winds and rain until he got back to the condos. He overstayed his welcome here. It would satisfy Lucci to know he kept his word as well; he didn't think he could be on the receiving end of his scowls any longer."Hey! How was the leak?" Elestren's voice called to him from behind. "Was it as bad as Jettie made it out to be?"Kaku slowed down his walking. He could hear her footsteps approaching him. Luck wasn't in his favor tonight. He sighed and rubbed his neck, wondering how he would convince her to let him go. He turned and gave her a hesitant smile."It wasn't bad at all. Just needed some sealant and it was good as new."Elestren's smile was relieved. "Ah, good." She eyed the door behind him and frowned slightly.
"Don't tell me you're going out in that storm?"Kaku held back a breath. "Well, I didn't want to overstay my welcome. Besides, the guys would worry about me if I didn't return like I promised.""I see." It was Elestren's turn to hesitate, fidgeting with some papers in her hands. "Well, the weather's getting pretty bad. I would hate to send you out only for you to get hurt or swept away." She came closer to him. Kaku tried to keep his resolve steady; no amount of doe-eyes or sweet words would entice him to stay any longer than necessary. She blinked her lashes up at him, concern swirling through her irises. "Can't you stay until the worst of it has passed? We have a Den Den Mushi here you can use to call the foremen so they know where you are."Kaku's throat bobbed, hand coming up to scratch his neck. She was making this hard for him to say no; her Devil Fruit spell was working its magic. "I- I don't know, flower. I really should-""Please, Kaku? Just for tonight? You can leave tomorrow if the weather permits it. I don't want you getting hurt."Kaku wouldn't get hurt; he was too fast for any kind of injury to take place. He looked into her eyes again, a grave mistake. Her pretty, gentle eyes were pleading, practically begging for him to remain inside the building. His stomach tightened. Damn it. Why did she have to be so sweet-looking like this?"Alright, I'll stay. But for tonight only."Elestren broke into a huge grin, her hand reaching out to caress his arm. "Thank you, Kaku. I'll get you that Den Den Mushi right away!" She turned on her heel and scurried off to retrieve the phone. Kaku rubbed his forehead. Lucci was going to kill him.
~
Kaku stared at the small snail in his hand, the eyes slanted into a frown. "I should have guessed you'd be with that girl. What kind of idiot takes a walk during a hurricane?""The weather got worse, I had no choice. Besides, they had a leak they needed fixing," Kaku sighed. Hattori's voice wasn't as chastising as Lucci's could be, but it didn't make it better to still hear Lucci voice his thoughts through the bird. The snail scowled deeper. "Well aren't you just the chivalrous knight in shining armor?"Kaku felt coals in the pit of his belly start to simmer, frustration and humiliation igniting up to his chest and making him bite his tongue from yelling at his partner. Why should he be so angry with him? He though Lucci trusted him.The Den Den Mushi made scuffling noises, and the snail's eyes became wide, Tilestone's boisterous laugh coming through the receiver. "Don't let Lucci rain on your parade, Kaku! We know you're in the best of hands! You take as long as you want over there!" The snail winked before more scuffling and background voices filled the receiver. The snail went blank, silence taking over.At first, Kaku thought maybe they hung up. But the snail was still active, blinking attentively. It started to scowl again, deeper than the last time."You lied to me."Kaku sat up straight at hearing Lucci's quiet, seething tone. He lowered his voice as he answered. "I didn't lie to you. I said I needed some air. That was the truth.""What are you earning through being with her? You don't need to see her every day, she isn't your girlfriend."Kaku hated the way Lucci was talking to him. He wasn't a petulant child; he was only keeping shelter from the storm. "I know this. Why don't you trust me? I'm not straying from the mission.""You're becoming distracted," Lucci growled lowly into the speaker. "That girl is keeping you from working.""She isn't," Kaku assured, trying not to give away his frustration. "What work would we need to do during the storm anyway? We can't go anywhere; everyone is shut up in their homes or in shelters. The best option for us right now is to follow suit and wait out the storm."Lucci was silent on the other end.Kaku sighed again, hating to be the voice of reason for Lucci's lack of judgment. His voice became quieter. "I'm not naive, Lucci. I won't get caught up in something I can't untangle myself from."The snail blinked for a minute, the scowl gradually turning into an indifferent expression. "See that you don't."The click of the phone was deafening in the room.
Kaku sighed, massaging his temple as he stood up to place the Den Den Mushi back on the small office table. He felt angry with Lucci’s disappointment, but felt more angry at himself. He thought he had earned Lucci’s trust after training in Cipher Pol for so long, but it seemed one little slip up had him doubting his partner. Kaku rolled his shoulders and left the office, back a little straighter. This wouldn’t cloud his judgment. He knew himself, he knew his limits. He wouldn’t let a girl affect his role in the mission. The girl in question was standing by the wall outside the room, fingers tapping against her legs. At Kaku’s reappearance, she stood up from the wall and faced him. Kaku tried to summon a smile, but paused at her expression.Elestren seemed upset. “Look, I’m sorry. I feel as if I got you in trouble with the guys. If you’d rather get back to the condos, I can find some kind of transportation for you.”Kaku wanted to chastise her for going back and forth in her decisions. If she feared he would face consequences, why would she beg for him to stay like that? What good did it do? Kaku knew he couldn’t be brash with her; it would make things worse. He tried on a smile, albeit a tight one.“Well, I couldn’t say no to you. You were only looking out for me-““Please don’t do that.”Kaku blinked. “Do what?”Elestren’s brows furrowed. “Pretend to be chivalrous. You’re allowed to be upset with me.”Before Kaku could rationalize an excuse, he tilted his head. “No I’m not.”“Yes you are. Why do you choose to do the opposite of what you're actually feeling?”Kaku didn’t like how the kindness in her eyes made him rise to the challenge. He hated that she saw past him somehow. “To be logical. If I decided to do what I was actually feeling, then I wouldn't be the great person you think I am, now would I?"Kaku knew he was starting to become mean. He had yet to show this side to her, but he didn't care right then. She was being stubborn too; he didn't need her down his neck like this.Elestren didn't let him faze her. She raised her chin defiantly at him, the hurt evident in her eyes. "Maybe you shouldn't keep up appearances then.""Maybe I won't.""Wonderful," Elestren said coldly. "I'll start for you. Get out of my hospitality center." With that, she turned on her heel and marched back toward the elevators.Kaku stood there alone, the howling of the rain and winds picking up outside, matching the turmoil in his chest. He couldn't seem to move. He should have been relieved that she released her hold on him; he could get back to the condos and be in Lucci's good graces again. Then why wasn't he leaving? Why did he suddenly feel so dissatisfied with how he handled things? It was one thing to have Lucci disappointed in him. It was something else entirely to have Elestren disappointed in him.Remorse seemed to sink its claws into Kaku's chest; Elestren's disappointment seemed to matter much more than Lucci's right then. Why was that? Why did it matter so much? Kaku swallowed hard, chest tight and muscles tense. He didn't just make her disappointed in him; she was kicking him out. He had hurt her.He briefly thought of the conversation back in the dive bar.

"Are you okay?"

"I think so. Much better now that you're here."

"I'll make sure to keep it that way for as long as I can."

Kaku clenched his fists by his side. He was an idiot. Who cared if Lucci was mad for him staying at the hospitality center? He was safe and sheltered, and he was stuck in a building with a pretty girl who cared too much about him. What was there to be upset about?Leaving seemed so irrational now, a mere secondary thought to what was now a priority in Kaku's mind. He straightened considerably and rolled his shoulders back. He walked briskly to the elevators, pressing the button to the fifth floor. He would keep his word on two things: dropping appearances, and keeping Elestren happy for as long as he could.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

The wind whistles eerily, as the storm approaches,

it gradually encroaches, taking over

like some unscrupulous military machine,

giving way to no one,

just charging along at a fierce pace,

buffeting anything that gets in the way.

It cannot turn back, not once it's committed.

The oncoming storm whips it into swirls of forceful energy,

it is uncontrollable.

This wind brings with it a follower.

The rain.

Battering and pounding on the rooftops,

lashing against the windows,

drumming a rhythmic revelry.

Here is a temper at full spate, caring not one iota

for the damage inflicted on man or beast or their environment.

Then suddenly, the sky starts to brighten,

the clouds part and the sun peeps through.

The storm is passing, and all is fresh and clean.

The rain's work is done,

and the elements are at peace once more.

----- CHAPTER BREAK -----

Deep breaths. Deep breaths.Elestren could feel the frustrated tears come welling back up. She leaned against the hallway and tried to swallow down the lump in her throat. She couldn’t face the hoards of people she was sheltering right now. She hated being so vulnerable like this, especially when she had work to get done. Why did he have to be so mean?If this was anyone else, Elestren would have rolled her eyes, dismissed their attitude and carried on with her day, maybe give some of that attitude back.
But it wasn’t just anyone. It was Kaku. Kaku was charming, friendly, and charitable. He didn’t seem to have a mean bone in his body. And yet, he had done a full 180 as soon as he had hung up the phone.Had something happened to make him so angry? Did she do something wrong by convincing him to stay at the center? She did admit, it was a bit selfish on her part to keep him from going back to his condo, but she did have his best interest and safety in mind.Elestren blinked ahead of her, focusing on nothing as her mind raced. She couldn’t get Kaku’s eyes out of her head—the subtle flicker of annoyance, his smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

He had been annoyed with her.

Elestren’s stomach began to hurt. It wasn’t such a bother that he was annoyed; it was the idea of him trying to act like he wasn’t. She didn’t want him to pretend with her. If he had to pretend to not be annoyed with her, what else was he pretending to feel, or not feel?
The door next to her opened. Elestren struggled to lift her eyes to whoever it was that was talking to her.
She blinked heavily at Ava. “What did you say?””Jettie said to get some extra chairs from the dining hall. Apparently some of the kids on level five want to build a fort!"Ava thought the idea was charming; Elestren couldn't help but feel irritated. At a time like this, kids wanted to build forts?Biting her tongue, she followed Ava to the elevators. She tried to summon some fake happiness back, if only to make herself look more composed for the people. They deserved someone who was happy to help them in a crisis—to be authentic in their hospitality. As Elestren and Ava grabbed carriers for the chairs, a vicious wind chose that moment to knock against the doors, water sloshing against the windows and hurling its winds to and fro. Both the girls flinched at the loud noises. They picked up their pace back to the elevators. They didn’t want to remain on the main level longer than they had to be.A horrifying thought came to Elestren as the elevator began to lift them up. What if Kaku didn’t get back to the condos safely? The weather was getting worse by the hour; sending anyone out would be a death sentence.
Elestren could feel her stomach tying in knots. Perhaps she had been too careless in her anger; kicking him out of the building had been a mistake. If he was badly injured or even killed, it would be her fault. Swallowing hard, she tried to remain neutral as the elevator doors opened. Elestren would help Ava get the chairs into the lodging space, then she would hightail it to her Den Den Mushi and check in with the foremen to make sure Kaku got back safely.Elestren didn't quite register the sounds of children squealing or giggling fits of laughter. She followed behind Ava as they opened the lodging doors and gaped at the scene before her.The entire space had turned into multiple tents and forts for everyone inside, including the adults and small families. Countless children were chasing someone around the room, clambering all over him and fighting to get on his back.Elestren felt her throat begin to squeeze. It was Kaku.Kaku had grabbed a couple kids around him, holding them tightly as he ran up the walls and leapt to the other side, earning more squealing laughter from the children. Elestren watched him effortlessly hop from wall to wall, reminiscent of some kind of limber animal. It reminded her of the simple afternoons she spent with him, holding onto his back as he bounded from rooftop to rooftop, his hands tight on her legs.
Elestren took her eyes away from the scene to look around the room. Some of the adults and parents watched the fun obstacle taking place, smiles contagious. The room wasn't cluttered like the other lodging spaces; the tents and forts made enough room for everyone to have their own private section. Elestren blinked in wonder. Had Kaku helped rearrange this room?Ava glanced back at Elestren, giving her a look of wonder. Elestren couldn't summon a proper smile; she couldn't do anything except stare and gawk at everything inside the room.
She had been so cruel. She didn't deserve to face Kaku after what she had said, but more so now that he stayed and kept everyone in high spirits during the frightening storm. She was an idiot. The girls carefully wheeled in the extra chairs. Elestren made sure her back was to Kaku so she wouldn't have to face him just yet. It didn't seem to matter; Kaku was already approaching them to help get the chairs set up.Elestren turned right as Kaku moved in for a stack, forcing her to become chest to chest with him. She gasped lightly and backed up, hitting the cart behind her and staring wide-eyed at the sweet man. Kaku paused, one arm on the stack of chairs, almost barricading her to her spot. She watched him blink softly down at her, overwhelming her with his sweet presence yet again.Kaku had a couple beads of sweat running down his temple from the play and exertion. He looked lighter, more relaxed and open. Elestren thought he looked so incredibly handsome in this moment; something in the atmosphere shifted at this untamed yet calm demeanor he had. Elestren swallowed hard, cheeks going ablaze as she tried to open her mouth to speak."Hi," she said inaudibly, voice creaking like a sick frog.Kaku's smile was like a breath of fresh air, a warm hand coming up to brush away a small piece of hair on her forehead. "Hey, flower."Elestren melted into his touch, the nickname making her heart skip.
~
Elestren's eyes couldn't seem to blink as she watched Kaku entertain the kids, afraid she would miss a moment of this beautiful exterior he was showcasing. She tried to focus as she and Ava made sure everyone had what they needed for the night, making lists of things they would need to bring up soon. Elestren reviewed the lists, forcing her eyes away from Kaku, who was throwing a small kid into the air and catching them. It was amazing how well Kaku fit into the current role; what made Elestren so flustered was that he seemed to be actually enjoying himself. There was no trace of annoyance or obligation in his eyes as he played with the children.Elestren felt sweat accumulate into her palms. Did he feel obligation with her now? Did he always feel that way?As if sensing her immediate discomfort, Kaku's long legs carried him to her side. He had turned his ball cap backward, his light hair sticking through the opening. He looked youthful this way, more endearing. It made her nervous. She held her breath as he peered down at her, her eyes studying his, searching for an ounce of irritation or burden hidden beneath his irises. His eyes gave nothing away. Elestren's eyes flickered to his mouth when it began to turn up into a small smile."You alright, flower?"Elestren swallowed hard, hands clamming up around the lists in her hands. "I'm alright." She huffed out a breath, overwhelmed with how anxious he made her. "I, uh, I'm getting some more provisions for everyone. Do you...need anything? Are you hungry?"Kaku tilted his head in thought. "Now that you mention it, I'm starving. Some water would be wonderful as well."Elestren nodded fervently, scrambling for her pen and adding another tally to food and water. When she looked back up to Kaku, she watched him step closer, his eyelids hooding. Something in her belly flipped at the look he was giving her. She stayed attentive to him, watching to see what he would do or say next."Mind if I tag along with you? It could take a while. You might need some help."Elestren tried to keep herself from shuddering at his low murmur. What did that mean? Did he want to talk? She supposed they did need to talk about their argument and her reaction. Elestren felt that belly-flipping motion ignite inside of her again. She didn't know what the hell that expression he was giving her was. It put her on edge; but not in a threatening way.Out of her peripherals, she noticed a couple children come running up to the two of them, clinging to one of Kaku's long legs and giggling excitedly."Mr. Kaku! Mr. Kaku! Can we play the wind game again? Please?"Kaku took his gaze off Elestren to chuckle and ruffle the kids' hair, stooping down to get on their level. "I'm afraid I'll need to eat something so I can get strong for games again." He gestured to the chairs and blankets being set up. "But I'll make you a deal. If you help build some new ships until I get back, I'll make sure you're first in line!"The kids' disappointment didn't last too long. They smiled widely and chattered excitedly as they ran to help with the blanket forts, or the "ships" as Kaku called them.Elestren blinked in wonder. "You're very good at that."Kaku raised up to his full height. "At what? Making deals?" he teased.Elestren couldn't help but return his lopsided grin. "I meant with the kids. You're very-" she paused, trying to find the right word, "-good." It wasn't the word she wanted, but nothing else seemed to suit what he was.Kaku gave a chuckle. "I wouldn't say I'm that good.""I think you are," Elestren countered. "You're very good. And kind. And..." She trailed off, lowering her eyes to the ground as the argument from hours ago resurfaced. And I'm not sure if you're being that way because you have to be.Elestren couldn't meet Kaku's eyes, even when he stepped closer again and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. His touch made her skin vibrate pleasantly. He made her feel so many things in such a short amount of time--from happy to angry, from angry to worried, from worried to flustered. It would almost be whiplash if she didn't find him so lovely.Kaku gently took the same hand that touched her and placed it under her chin, raising her eyes to meet his again. His smile was twice as gentle. "What if I make you a deal as well?"Elestren's eyes fluttered as he held her with his palm. "I'm listening."Kaku's thumb brushed along her skin. "You feed me, and I'll spend the rest of Agua Laguna here with you. I'll do whatever you ask of me."Elestren blinked. Was he serious? Did he really want to be here with her? Elestren couldn't hold back her skepticism. "All of that for just a meal? I'm afraid what I'll be doing pales in comparison to what you've done for me.""But it doesn't really," Kaku said, his smile growing. "This is a hospitality center. You're taking care of me and keeping me safe." He trailed his hand up along her jaw and pinched her earlobe playfully, earning him a light gasp. "If I help out, I suppose it's in my best interest to make sure I take care of you and keep you safe as well."Elestren felt jittery; if Kaku didn't have his hold on her, she feared she would float away.Kaku had gotten closer; she practically had to crane her neck back to look up at him. His fingers tangled into the hair behind her ear, twisting the locks near the nape of her neck. Her mouth parted at the intimate gesture, watching his eyes hood into that intense look he had given her before. He was never so physical like this with her; this was uncharted territory. It made Elestren's thighs go up in flames, making her breath falter and try to squeeze itself back into her lungs.Kaku's voice lowered. "We'd be helping each other out, sharing the benefit. Doesn't that sound good, flower?"Elestren wanted to squeal and shriek, desperate to expel the high energy and pent up tension lodged inside her sternum and belly. What was happening? What was he doing? Was he trying to convince her to let him stay? He didn't need to put on such a performance for her; she already wanted him to stay. What frightened her the most, though, was that there wasn't any lingering doubt or deceit in his eyes. He was doing this of his own free will. He was doing it on purpose.Did he have any idea what he was doing to her? Making her feel?Kaku's smile morphed into a playful smirk, long lashes blinking slowly. Elestren felt her eyes widen. He knew; he fucking knew what he was doing. Elestren sucked in a harsh breath through her teeth, eyes darting away quickly. She couldn't stand to meet his gaze knowing he was trying to seduce her, knowing it was working.Kaku wasn't having it. His large hand spread along the back of her head, cradling it carefully while he maneuvered her to look him in the eyes again. When his tongue stuck out to lick his lips, Elestren snapped. Her face was on fire as she let out a strangled squeak and wrestled out of his hold. She took several breaths, trying to get a hold of herself. She scanned the room quickly to see if anyone had seen what he reduced her to, if anyone had picked up on the way her skin prickled and crackled like kindling in a furnace.Deep breaths. Deep breaths. No one seemed to notice their private moment, much too busy within their tents and forts of comfort. Elestren sighed a breath of relief, trying to clear her mind. She thought back to Kaku's suave words, his request still hanging in the air. A plaguing thought crossed her mind right then, making the tense flutters and blush disappear as soon as they came."Would it be a true benefit? Or are you not the good man I think you are?"It seemed like a mistake to remove the playfulness from the atmosphere between them, but Elestren needed to ask it. She needed to know if this was real, if what he was doing was because he wanted it. Was all of it pretend? Was he obligated yet again by her?Kaku was deathly silent. Elestren waited for his reply; she'd wait forever if that meant he said something worthwhile, something honest for once.It was a couple minutes later when Elestren felt Kaku's hand brush her arm. "If it's you, it's a benefit. You're worth all of it."Elestren turned around quickly, needing to see his face, needing to see it for herself. Kaku gazed down at her, eyes devoid of the intensity he captured her with before, his irises now a soft dark brown. His features looked nervous, almost embarrassed with the switch in mood. Elestren wasn't too concerned about his comfort right then; she wanted his authenticity. She craved it.Elestren cleared her throat. "I can take you to the main kitchen for some food." She grabbed the chair carriers next to her. "I'll show you the way."With Ava gone, Elestren greatly underestimated the weight and bulkiness of two carriers. She struggled clumsily with holding the both of them at the same time. When Kaku took the reins and gathered the carriers from her, Elestren let him. She gave him a small smile of thanks and opened the door for him.
"I'll try not to keep you too long. I know the kids will be wanting to have you back."Kaku gave her a small grin. "Don't persecute me, but I didn't choose to stay here during a storm for the kids."Elestren stared at him a bit too long, forcing her eyes away and walking ahead of him down the hallway. She missed the smile on the man's face, too focused on the hall in front of her.

Elestren finished cleaning the kitchen while Kaku ate, piecing together what she wanted to say to him.She knew she had to apologize, but she knew she needed to express how upset she was with the idea of him holding back emotions from her. It was one thing to not share parts of his past, but another thing to withhold emotions. Especially since she suspected he had some feelings for her.Kaku cut into her internalization. "Why don't you come sit down, flower?" He gestured to the stool beside him. "You haven't touched your food yet."She was sure she was hungry; she still had yet to eat anything since that morning. The recent events of the day had ruined her appetite momentarily, but now that things were on the rise, her stomach decided to let out a hollow growl.Elestren set down the cleaning cloth in her hand and placed herself next to Kaku, picking up her fork and taking tentative bites. Kaku kept his eyes on her. "Something on your mind? I can practically see steam coming out of your ears."Elestren began her vicious cycle of thinking again while she chewed. When she swallowed, she threw care to the wind and decided to just speak her mind. "I feel terrible about our argument from hours ago." She folded her hands in her lap, trying not to fidget. "I know I was angry with you, but it wasn't fair to kick you out of the center, especially during a storm as bad as this one. I-" she gave a pause, forcing her eyes to Kaku's, "-I'm sorry I treated you like that. I should have been kinder."Kaku watched her for a moment, his face unreadable. He took a deep breath and slid his eyes to the plate in front of him. "I should be the one apologizing. You were right about everything. I shouldn't pretend to be a certain way if I do not feel it." He glanced sideways to her hands in her lap. "You see me as this wonderful and good person, and doing anything to hinder that would be devastating."Elestren's eyebrows furrowed as she watched him. "That doesn't mean you aren't allowed to be irritated with me or those around you." She fidgeted with her shorts. "I want you to be yourself, not what others expect you to be.""It's not that simple," Kaku replied, turning his fork over in his hand. "I have certain expectations for myself, and if I let my emotions get in the way, I won't have good judgment."Elestren considered what he said. "I'm sure that's smart to do, but ignoring your emotions completely can be just as detrimental.""It isn't the same," Kaku countered, the irritation evident in his eyes.Despite defensiveness coming up, Elestren was happy he was being honest. She tilted her head a little closer to him. "Why not? You saw what happened this afternoon when you pretended not to be upset with your circumstances. I'm not saying there isn't a time and place for emotions, but you don't have to deny yourself to feel."Kaku didn't respond to that, choosing to take a few more bites of his food and drink some water.Elestren wished he would speak so she didn't feel the need to fill the silence. Was anything she saying making an impact on him? Did he understand where she was coming from? She reached for her fork, gathering food to lift to her mouth when Kaku finally spoke.
"I...don't find it easy to be real with others." Kaku took a small breath, eyes searching the air for words. "It’s much easier to just be what people need me to be rather than find the time to be vulnerable.”Elestren felt a small twinge of sadness bloom inside her chest at those words. She was sure he was being honest, but he was so nonchalant about saying it—like it was ingrained into him over the years. Elestren reached a hand out and placed it over his empty one. He glanced at her.”It would all be for nothing, Kaku. You can only do so much of that before you lose yourself entirely.”
Kaku let out a small laugh, finding her seriousness about it amusing. “Would that be such a bad thing if the job gets done?”“If you desire for whatever’s between us to go farther, then yes.”Kaku wasn’t expecting Elestren to say that, much less herself. His eyes widened minimally, hand jolting out from underneath hers like she had set him on fire.
Elestren wanted to berate herself internally for letting something like that slip. She was getting flustered with how careless he was in his resolve, she couldn’t help but think about what the future held between the two of them. Did he really like her like she thought he did? Was he pretending about that too?
Swallowing hard, Elestren kept her eyes steady, a flush growing on her neck.”I remember you saying before that you liked me despite your trouble with revealing details of your past. I still respect that, but now that obligation has come up, I’m starting to wonder what your motives are with being involved with me.” She kept her eyes steely. “Did you mean it when you said you liked me?”Kaku didn’t take his eyes away from her, meeting the challenge. “I did.””Then your vulnerability is on the line. At this point, you should consider if I’m worth the trouble, or if it will make things worse in the end.”Elestren anchored herself to Kaku’s stare, hoping her glassy eyes didn’t reveal her pain. It seemed cruel to put him in this situation so early in their friendship, but even if they remained friends and didn’t become lovers, he still needed some vulnerability in their connection.
Kaku’s face was unreadable. Elestren tried to keep from shaking him, willing him to be vulnerable to her face. Her hands fidgeted in her lap, holding her breath. Would he cut things off? Had she been too forward in this? She needed to know.
Kaku leaned away from her, taking a slow deep breath. Elestren wasn’t sure if that reaction was good or bad. She wished he would give her something. Maybe he made up his mind already and was debating how to let her down gently.Elestren swallowed, an idea coming to her. “Do you wanna go somewhere?”Recognizing the repeat of his own words, Kaku blinked at her, mouth twitching up momentarily. “Where to?”Elestren stood up from the stool, her hand out to him. “Follow me.”
