Sam wasn’t exactly sure how he ended up here—sitting across from Colby at a dimly lit rooftop restaurant, fairy lights twinkling above them, a candle flickering between their plates. The city skyline stretched behind Colby, casting a soft glow over his face. It was almost… romantic. And that was the weird part.It had started as a joke.Colby, scrolling through Instagram, had groaned dramatically. “Dude, Valentine’s Day is such a scam. Everyone’s either in love or pretending to be.”Sam smirked. “You sound bitter.”Colby rolled his eyes. “I’m just saying, why should couples get all the fun? We should just take each other out. Avoid the whole ‘being single on Valentine’s Day’ thing.”Sam had shrugged. “Yeah, sure.”And now? Now, they were actually on a date.Colby smirked as he swirled the straw in his drink. “Didn’t think I’d be such a good date, huh?”Sam rolled his eyes but couldn’t help smiling. “You planned this way too well, dude. Like… reservations? Rooftop views? Candlelight? What, are you trying to impress me?”Colby leaned forward, resting his chin on his hand. “Is it working?”Sam swallowed. There was something in Colby’s gaze—mischievous, teasing, but also… soft.He cleared his throat and took a sip of his drink. “I mean, the food’s good.”Colby chuckled. “Admit it. Best Valentine’s Day ever.”Sam huffed but clinked his glass against Colby’s. “Fine. Best date I’ve had in a while.”Colby grinned, clearly satisfied. “Good. ‘Cause next year? I’m going even bigger. Maybe Paris.”Sam scoffed. “Yeah, okay. Like we’re flying to Paris for a fake date.”Colby just smirked, his eyes glinting in the candlelight. “Who said anything about it being fake?”Sam froze, his heart doing a weird little flip. But before he could respond, Colby popped a fry into his mouth and changed the subject, as if he hadn’t just dropped that bomb. And suddenly, Sam wasn’t so sure this had been a joke after all.
