Not all Starfleet officers were wolfbonded, of course, nor even most. Among some it was even a point of pride that they were not. Much easier to fit into an established ship or station and crew, they could claim, without the "complication" of a wolf. Wolves had their own ideas of status, and important connections. Claimed priority in where to den (quarter) and with whom. Then, the complexity of placing wolves with especially strong pair-bonds, or litter-sibling ones, or for that matter deep enmities. That did make choosing personnel more difficult.It was convenient that Chakotay's bondwolf was a female. She could be expected to jostle with Mollie about leadership, in a manner wolves of disparate sexes might not. But Mollie would soon have pups, her first litter. From what Kathryn had been told by others who had strong-willed sisters, that would add mother-angry strength to her. And the new pups would be a reminder of Mollie's status.With luck, Mollie would agree to go on suppressants for a time, after. Breeding season could reinforce pack bonds, but also had the potential to fracture them.Had Chakotay's wolf been his brother, there might have been pressure from the wolves themselves to set his role as her first officer in a manner that aligned with pack.
