Work Text

With Chimney's help Buck was able to get the perfect date night planned. A date that will hopefully reconnect him and Tommy. Buck can't live without the older man anymore. Tired of crying himself to sleep. Tired of his heart hurting everyday.  As planned Chimney drove Tommy to the basketball court. Athena made sure she was assigned to patrol the area so another cop doesn't arrest them. Buck set up a picnic, or as a picnic can get with a small folding table and chairs, in the middle of the court. He made all of Tommy's favorite foods and bought his favorite wine. Buck closed his eyes and asked all the romance and love deities for a little help to make this work.  It needed to work.  Buck was standing next to the table waiting for Chim to bring Tommy. He had the music playing softly to try and calm his nerves. They made him wait a half hour. By then his nerves were close to shot. To his surprise Chimney had Tommy blindfolded as you guided him to Buck. His brother-in-law left without a word. "Tommy." Buck spoke softly. The older man quickly tore off the blindfold.  "Evan? What is this? Where is Howie?" "He left. He was helping me by bringing you here because you wouldn't come otherwise. This is a date. Yes, I know it's Valentine's Day but that has nothing to do with this. Please sit." "Evan--"  "Please, Tommy." Buck begged. He was desperate to keep Tommy from walking away, again. Tommy let out a sigh before moving to sit down. He was shocked to see his favorite meal when Evan uncovered the plates. He can see how much work Evan put into all of this. It was nothing if not perfect. Tommy ignored the little voice in his head telling that Evan is perfect and he was a goddamn fool to walk away.  The music filled the silence between them. Buck glanced at Tommy every few seconds. Tommy kept his gaze on his plate. It would be too much temptation if he looked at the blond that stole his heart.  When they finished eating, Buck started a new song. This one was carefully picked. He had searched for days to find the one song that said everything he wanted Tommy to know how he felt about the breakup.  Buck stood up and held out his hand to Tommy.  "Please." "Just this one." Tommy stood. He allowed Evan to pull him from the table.  The older man was equally surprised that Evan allowed him to lead and by the choice of the song.
I pretend that I'm glad you went away

But these four walls close in more every day

And I'm dying inside

And nobody knows it but me
Buck kept his eyes on Tommy. Wanting to see every emotion. Tommy wanted to look away, but couldn't. Instead he focused on the song.
Like a clown I put on a show

The pain is real even if nobody knows

And I'm crying inside

And nobody knows it but me
This next part had become Buck's favorite.  Tommy now remembers the lyrics to this song. He knew what was next and tried to steel himself from feeling anything. But sadly it was a losing battle.
Why didn't I say the things I needed to say

How could I let my angel get away

Now my world is just a-tumblin' down

I can say it so clearly but you're nowhere around

The nights are lonely, the days are so sad

And I just keep thinkin' about the love that we had

And I'm missing you

And nobody knows it but me
Tommy hates seeing tears in Evan's eyes. They were meant to have laughter fill them. Instead he was the cause of the pain and sorrow in those blue eyes. He reminded himself that he can't be Evan's last.
I carry your smile when I'm broken in two

And I'm nobody without someone like you

I'm trembling inside and nobody knows it but me

I lie awake, it's a quarter past three

I'm screaming at night if I thought you'd hear me

Yeah, my heart is calling you

And nobody knows it but me
Buck's nerves went up another level. The song was coming to an end. He was scared over what would happen when it did.
How blue can I get, you could ask my heart

But like a jigsaw puzzle it's been torn all apart

Billion words couldn't say just how I feel

A million years from now, you know, I'll be loving you still
The breath caught in Tommy's throat at that last line. A small smile formed on Evan's lips. The small voice kept chanting 'I told you so'.
The nights are lonely, the days are so sad

And I just keep thinkin' about the love that we had

And I'm missing you

And nobody knows it but me

Tomorrow morning, I'm a hit a dusty road

Gonna find you, wherever, ever you might go

And I'm gonna load my heart

And hope you come back to me
Neither heard the end of the song when Tommy finally gave in and surged forward, claiming Evan's mouth. He can't walk away again. Can't bring himself to break Evan's heart again. Break his own heart.  Buck wrapped his arms around Tommy's neck, hands gripping the short hair. He let out a moan when Tommy gripped his hips to pull him closer.  "Don't make me arrest you two." The sharp voice caused them to break apart.  "Athena." Buck smiled at his pseudo mother. "We weren't going to do anything that would get us arrested." "Uh-huh. It's getting late. Clean up and go home." "Yes, ma'am."  "And Kinard?" "Sergeant?" "You better apologize for breaking his heart. Do it again and they won't ever find your body. Understood?" "Yes, ma'am." Tommy knew that was not idle.  "Good." Athena turned her gaze back to Buck. "See you for Sunday dinner, baby." Buck shook his head as she walked away. He gave Tommy one more kiss before moving to clean up. Tommy helped and even carried the table and chairs for him. Together they loaded up the jeep.  "Do you want me to take you home?" "Nah, I'm driving." Tommy snagged the keys with a kiss. He knew just where to go. He plans on continuing this date.  Buck was surprised when Tommy drove them to the theater they were supposed to go to on their first date. He let Tommy take his hand to guide him to the building. Tommy paid for the tickets to two different movies. His pilot wouldn't let him pay for anything. The whole time through the first movie Tommy whispered his apologies. He also held Evan's hand through both movies.  Buck prayed to not wake up if this is a dream.  Later, Tommy drove them to the loft. He spent the whole night curled around Buck. And when Evan woke the next morning Tommy was still there.  That morning the date didn't end. It just got hijacked by Tommy Kinard. Buck didn't have a problem with that as along as Tommy didn't leave him again.  Every date after they would take turns picking a song to dance to. ~Fin~
