His home had always been cold and empty. He was an only child, meaning most of the time, he was looked after by house elves while his parents were elsewhere. If he was being honest, he was glad that they were away so much because even though his mother was the kindest soul he’d ever known, his father wasn’t, and that was a problem everyone had chosen to look past in that household.Like one time, he remembers that he’d gone outside and brought one of the peacocks in so they could play together inside. The bird ran around and destroyed a vase. That was the first time he could recall that he was beat. His mother held him and told him that it was alright, brushing it off by saying “Daddy just got a little angry”. He was 6.Another time, he was running about at one of his fathers events, hosted at their house. He had just saw another kid his age, Vincent Crabbe, and they played tag. Draco tripped over a chair and cried as his knee stung. His mother comforted him and took him to his room to calm down. After the gala, his father stormed up, rage in his eyes, saying that Malfoy men didn’t run around carelessly and that they most definitely didn’t cry.But he wasn’t a man, he was an 8 year old boy who happened to love running and had big feelings. His mother sat in his room after, wiping the tears.
“It’s okay darling, I’ll have an elf fetch us a healing paste” she said softly “Wipe your eyes, dear”
“Malfoy men don’t cry.” He said, remembering what his father said and wipes his eyes
“You’re not just a Malfoy though, are you? You’re also a Black, and they can cry, they can feel. Don’t forget that, my little dragon”~~3 years had passed since then, and Draco had grown with the beliefs of his father, but also his mother, secretly telling stories of Noble House of Black. It was August 16th, 15 days until he got to go Hogwarts. He’d always been excited to go, his mother told him stories of all the things she used to do at her time there. Stories and stories filled with people he’d vaguely heard of — he’d heard her say something about an Alice, and how her boy was probably in her year.He was sat on his bed, picking out his favourite black dress robes for his trunk when the room door opened.“Hello darling, how’s packing going?” His mother asked. He’d insisted on packing himself to give the elves a little break, and Narcissa let him, but she probably came up to check he hadn’t forgotten any clothes.“It’s going great, mother” he smiled
“I’m glad your so excited” she smiled backHe nodded “I’m sure I’ll make all kinds of friends, and I want to be in Ravenclaw!”
“Ravenclaw?” She looked unsure for a second but continued with her calm demeanour “it suits you, you always were smart”He continued to pack whilst chatting to his mother, only missing his books - which they would buy the next day.~~After his mother had left, a pecking interrupted him from folding his shirt. On his window ledge stood a medium sized, honey brown owl. He opened the window and took the paper from its beak.‘Hey Draco,
How’s packing going? I’m so excited for Hogwarts, 2 weeks is too long
T’Theodore Nott, his best friend, his only friend. Their fathers thought it would be good for 2 Noble houses to fraternise with eachother, and so they told the two boys to be friends.Luckily for them, him and Theo became fast friends, and they always sent owls in the evening.‘To T,
I hope we’ll be in the same house. Also, I’m going to get the rest of my supplies tomorrow, what about you?’He sent off the owl with the new price of paper in its mouth. It arrived about 4 minutes later, with another peice of parchment in its mouth.‘To D,
I’m already packed and I’m hoping for Slytherin. Also, my father said they let us choose, something about a hat deciding our houses’Draco read it and scribbled out another response.‘To T,
Yeah, my mother said that too, it’s sounds so crazy. She also said that the Potter boy will be in our year’‘To D,
I saw it on the Daily Prophet, he’s going to be at Diagonal Alley soon - perhaps you’ll see him? Anyway, I’ve got to give my father’s owl back before he notices.
Night’‘To T,
Perhaps I will see him. Goodnight’Draco had heard of the mystery that was: Harry Potter. The boy who lived. After Potter had defeated Voldemort, no one knew where he was sent to live. However, they’d spotted him in public last week with Hagrid and wrote articles upon articles about him.Draco thought Harry was really cool. Perhaps they would be friends.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
When Draco woke up to a knock on his door, he opened it and saw Dobby standing outside.“Good morning, Master Draco! Dobby has brought clothes for you to wear for today,”
“Thank you Dobby, I really appreciate it” Draco smiled at Dobby and took the clothes. That day was a big day, shopping for his books, and probably the last day before Hogwarts that he’d spend outside with his mother. After he’d eaten his breakfast, him and his mother took the Floo to Diagonal Alley. They went to a robe shop first, so she could look around for a bit, and then they went to the ice cream parlour, as it was a particularly warm day.Later on, they went to Flourish and Blotts to find his books for the first school year. He walked in and went to grab a book, A Beginners Guide to Transfiguration, another hand reached to do so too.Draco handed the book to the other person, a brownskin boy with dark brown eyes and short afro hair.“Sorry about that” Draco smiled politely
“No, your fine” the other boy said
“Are you going into first year too?” Draco asked
“Yeah, I’m Blaise Zabini, you are?”
“Draco Malfoy”
“What house are you hoping for, Draco?”
“Ravenclaw, what about you?”
“Me too, maybe we’ll be in the same house,”
“Maybe we will” Draco said as he picked up the book and his mother tapped him on the shoulder.“Draco, isn’t that the Potter boy?” She saidA small crowd had formed by the back of the shop, where the ‘History of Magic’ books were. By the shelves stood a thin, tan boy with quite wavy hair and a large lightning shaped scar, running down his eyebrow to his cheek on the left side of his face. Harry Potter.“Wow, that really is him!” Blaise said in awe
“Think we’ll get to talk to him?” Draco said
“I doubt it boys, and perhaps he just wants to feel like a normal young boy today, not a celebrity. Look how nervous he looks” Narcissa saidAfter a while, they got all their books and decided to leave the shop. Draco and Blaise parted ways and then he went home with his mother.“Think I’ll get to be friends with him?” He asked
“Your a wonderful boy, Draco, of course he’ll want to be friends with you” she smiled~~The two weeks passed by quickly and suddenly, it was the day before Hogwarts. He and Theo sent odd everyday, talking about their excitement and promising to sit together on the train. He was getting ready for bed — at 9 o’clock because he wanted an early night — when Dobby came up, saying that his father requested his presence downstairs. It never went well when his father called him down. He crept down the stairs gingerly and walked to his father’s study.“Good evening, father”
His father nodded at him “Draco, you are going to Hogwarts tomorrow”
“I am, yes”
“I wanted to say, I don’t want to hear any problems from you. No detentions, no trouble, no bad grades. I’ve taught you well and you’re representing the House of Malfoy when you’re outside.” He paused “Any foolishness and I’ll send you straight to Durmstrang.”
Draco only nodded.
“Normally, you get to choose what house you want. Do you know which one you’re choosing?”He wasn’t sure if that was a rhetorical question or not so he just shook his head.
“You’re choosing Slytherin, just as all the Malfoy’s before you. Do not bother come home if you get anything as stupid as HufflePuff or Gryfindor”
“Is that all?” Draco asked
“It is, I shall see you in the morning”
“Goodnight father”As Draco walked away, he let out a small smile. His father looked down on Gryfindor and Hufflepuff, but he didn’t say anything about Ravenclaw. He still had a chance, a small chance to be what he wanted.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Draco always wanted to go Hogwarts, he wanted to leave the cold, quiet confines of Malfoy Manor as soon as he could. The only thing he didn’t want to leave was his mother, the one good thing about his home.
They walked up to platform 9&3/4 20 minutes early, so he stood by his mother and father, staring at the train.
“I’ll miss you mother,”
“I’ll write to you every month, darling. I promise, it’ll be just as fun as my stories” she smiled
He smiled back.In the distance, he saw Theo approaching from the entrance of the platform, waving him over.“I best be going now, so me and Theo can get a good seat” he announced to both his parentsNarcissa kissed him on the cheek, Lucius only nodded at him.
“Remember what I said yesterday, I only speak once” he said coldly
“Don’t forget to write back,” she called, lightening the moodDraco nodded and walked off, pulling his suitcases behind him as Theo called his name. They walked into the train, quickly finding an empty compartment. They heard the train make a loud noise, and then it was moving off, closer and closer to Hogwarts.~~It had been about 5 minutes of talking when the door opened, and Blaise walked in.
“It’s you again,” he smiled at Draco “Can I sit?”
“Of course,” Draco smiled back
“What’s your name?” Theo asked
“Blaise Zabini, you?”
“Theo Nott” he repliedAll 3 of them talked about things they wanted to do at Hogwarts, Quidditch and the amount of classes they had.It wasn’t long before the door opened again and 3 girls walked in. The first girl was slightly tan, with a beauty spot on her cheek and short, black hair falling around her neck. The two other girls basically looked the same, dark blonde hair, stopping mid-torso with emerald green eyes.“Can we sit here? All the other places are full” said the black haired girl
“Sure, I’m Theo.”
“Draco”
“Blaise”“I’m Pansy,” said the black haired girl
“Astoria” said the shorter blonde girl
“Daphne” said the taller oneBy the end of the train ride, everyone was laughing together. When they were led off, Draco watched as all the older years walked into moving carriage which looked like it should be attached to a horse.“How is it moving?” Blaise asked Percy, the Prefect who walked infront of them
“Thestrals, they’re only invisible to those who haven’t witnessed death.” He answered
“Why are we walking in the opposite direction to them?” Draco asked
“You’re going to go by ferry. All first years do, but don’t worry, next year you’ll go by carriage” Percy saidThe girls got into one ferry, and the boys got into another, with a boy called Crabbe.
“My dad said a hat decides what house you get into” Crabbe said
“My mother said the same” Blaise replied
“It all seems so bizarre, doesn’t it?” Draco said~~A teacher called McGonnagall told them to get into lines and wait to get sorted. All the first years got into alphabetical order. Blaise automatically went to the back of the line, as his last name started with ‘Z’. Draco went infront of Theo, and Pansy went behind of him. Infront of Draco was a girl with hair as blonde as him, and behind Pansy was Harry Potter. In the line, everyone made their way into the hall, the older years were already seated and watching them. The headteacher, Dumbledore, an old man with a glint of excitement in his eyes made a long speech, and then got out the sorting hat.“Lavender Brown” Dumbledore called
A girl with loose, curly hair walked up to the stage. The hat had barely touched her head before shouting, “Gryfindor!”
She smiled and walked over to the Gryfindor table, sitting next to a tall ginger boy“Cho Chang”
A tallThe hat was rested on her head and he could hear her murmuring to the hat and then it yelled, “Ravenclaw”“Vincent Crabbe”
The hat touched his hair, and quickly shouted “Slytherin!”“Seamus Finnegan”
“Gryfindor!” The hat called after a while on his head.“Hermione Granger”
A small girl with large bushy hair and light brown skin sat under the hat. She remained there for 5 minutes, quietly bargaining with the hat before it screamed “Gryfindor!”“Daphne Greengrass”
The hat barely hovered over her head, “Slytherin!”
She smirked and met her sisters eyes, nodding her head before walking over to her table.“Astoria Greengrass”
She sat under the hat for a while, nervously tapping her feet. “Ravenclaw!” Astoria looked at her sister and walked to the other side of the hall, where the Ravenclaws sat.Gregory Goyle”
“Slytherin!” That hat yelled.“Luna Lovegood”
The girl with white-blonde hair skipped up the steps, humming to herself. She spoke to the hat, talking to it as if it was just a normal person, and like it was a normal conversation. She didn’t speak particularly quietly but it wasn’t too loud either.
“Ravenclaw!”“Draco Malfoy” the Dumbledore saidHe walked up the steps and sat down, catching Theo’s eyes before the hat was pulled on his head, obscuring his view of the hall.
“I was told I get to choose,” he whispered “I’d like to be Ravenclaw”
“It is true what was said, yet I cannot put you in that house”
“Why?”
“It isn’t the place for you, you need to be elsewhere”
“Isn’t the place for me? How do you know?”
“I can’t tell you, but what I can say, is that you’re better off in SLYTHERIN!” the last word was a yell, and the hat was finally removed from his head. He made his way over to Astoria, sitting beside her.
The Gryfindors glared at him angrily, like the expected this, but it didn’t make them any less disappointed.“Theodore Nott”
Draco watched from the table as Theo talked to the hat. He smirked as the hat yelled out “Slytherin!”, and he sat next to Draco.“Pansy Parkinson”
From where he was sat, it looked like quite a heated discussion Pansy was having with the hat. She talked and talked until the hat spoke out loud. “Gryfindor!” Pansy’s eyes widened and she walked silently to the table, where everyone —but the curly haired girl from earlier— gave her dirty looks. The Gryfindors hated the Sacred 28.“Padma Patil”
“Ravenclaw!” The girl smiled, as if she had expected this, and gave her sister a reassuring thumbs up before walking off.“Parvati Patil”
“Gryfindor!” The girl looked shocked and upset, as if she had not expected this, being separated from her sister.“Harry Potter”
The whole hall went silent in anticipation, and McGonagall smiled as if she expected him to be in her House, Gryfindor. Everyone watched as he mumbled to the hat, and a collective gasp ripple throughout the hall as the hat declared him a Slytherin.
He watched the hall nervously as he slowly walked over to his table, seeming aware of the eyes on him. McGonagall and Dumbledore looked slightly disappointed and Gryfindor table watched Harry in disdain.“Dean Thomas”
“Ravenclaw!” The hat yelled out soon after the hat was placed on the boy’s head.“Ron Weasley”
“Gryfindor!” The hat yelled as soon as it touched his ginger hair. He smiled proudly at the freckled, ginger girl behind him, most likely his sister, before walking to the table. He sat inbetween two older older, also ginger boys, most likely his brothers. How many siblings did this guys have? Draco watched as he moved up, to make space for his sister, who was currently walking up the stage, if got into Gryfindor. If, being the keyword.“Ginerva Weasley”
Dumbledore called her up and she sat down proudly, like she expected to be in Gryfindor too, with the rest of her brothers. The hat brushed against her head.
“Slytherin!”
She looked just as upset as Pansy had been, avoiding her brother’s look of hatred. If only her and Pansy could swap.“Blaise Zabini”
“Ravenclaw!” The hat called
It suited him, Draco thought, Blaise did seem really smart for his age.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
Draco was sat on the Slytherin table, where the chatter had eventually died down when Professor Dumbledore rang a bell to start his speech. “Everyone, I would like to welcome you to get another year at Hogwarts, and those who are new, I hope you enjoy it here. Everyone will be given their new timetables soon,”The speech droned on and on, so he decided to examine the teachers, a frail and shaky man, wearing a turban; Professor McGonagal; a giant with long curly hair and an even longer beard and then Uncle Severus. He’d grown up with him as his godfather, and he visited a lot to talk to his mother, give him gifts and tutor him in Potions — the class he would teach him this year. Dumbledore continued on.“ Please welcome the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher: Professor Quirrell!” Dumbledore announcedProfessor Quirrell looked nervous and shaky as he stood up and the school applauded for him. Dumbledore let the clapping subside before continuing to speak.“May I just add, the curfew for first to fourth years is 8pm, and for fifth onwards, 10pm. And this year, no student is permitted to be at the forbidden forest, or the third floor corridors at any given time.” He spoke loudly, so that whole hall could hear “That is all for tonight, I shall let you all eat now”And with that, food appeared on the tables, roast meat, pumpkin juice, fruit tarts, ice cream. Draco watched Harry, he looked excited, as if he hadn’t seen such food before. Surely he had thought, being a hero had to of made him rich enough for dinners like that.Across from him sat the upset ginger girl from earlier, and Daphne, whom he met already on the train. She comforted the crying girl, also looking a bit sad. Both had been separated from their siblings, and Draco wondered if it was really that bad — as an only child, he didn’t know how he’d react, but he felt bad for the Weasley girl.Him and Theo talked to eachother for the rest of the dinner, until the Prefects came to lead them up to their dorms.~~“Each door will have either 3 or 4 names engraved on it, that will be your room, and who you share it with” the 6th year said to the crowd of young Slytherins, letting them go up the stairs to check.“I think we’re down there” Theo said and dragged him to the end of the hall, where Draco could see someone standing, checking the doors too.Harry Potter.Harry looked over the doors, and then walked up to them. “You guys are Draco Malfoy and Theodore Nott?”“Just Theo” he smiled“Yeah, we are. Why?”“We share a dorm,” Harry pointed to one on the far end and smiled at Theo “Nice to meet you, Theo”They set up their things, filled their wardrobes with clothes and brushed their teeth, ready for bed. It was nearing 11 by the time they’d all finished.“So, Harry, how is it being famous?”“Well, I didn’t really know about it until last month”“Oh, why?”“I was raised in the muggle world, I thought I was just another orphan” he shrugged“So you were raised by a random muggle family?”“My aunt and uncle— I hate them, I’m so glad I got to come here” Harry rummaged through his drawer “besides, look what I got!”He jumped up and wrapped something invisible around him — it looked like he was miming putting a scarf on — and then Harry disappeared too.“What is that?!” Theo watched in awe“I don’t know, I found it last month in Diagon Alley.”“An invisible cloak, those are really hard to come by, Potter. You payed for that?” Draco said“Borrowed it” Harry winked
