The flight to Sumeru was safe and easy for the group. Although traveling in a large group like that proved to have more moving parts than Wriothesley had originally anticipated. He was forever grateful at the fact Chevreuse took charge in making sure Sigewinne was taken care of. Wriothesley had enough on his plate making sure Navia was comfortable in the travel time. When they landed, two friendly familiar faces greeted them. There was no holding Sigewinne back as she ran into the embrace of Dehya and Candace. The duo was so excited for their friends arriving in their home nation, they agreed to drive all the way to the airport and all the way to Port Ormos.“I'm so happy to see you both!!” Navia chirped in delight. She joined Sigewinne in hugging the two tightly.“Oh Navia, you're literally glowing! How far along are you now? Was the flight comfortable enough for you? Do you need a break before we leave for the port?” Candace asked, pulling away slightly to admire her friend. The two had gotten close over the years.“23 weeks now… she was really well behaved on the flight thankfully. Didn’t kick my bladder the entire time. Don't worry about me too much this trip… I promise if something is wrong I will voice it.” Navia chuckled softly.“Thanks for picking us up guys. It's great to see you both again, it's been a while.” Wriothesley smiled as he approached the heartfelt reunion. “We can't wait to see Port Ormos.”Neuvillette nodded in agreement from beside him. Between Neuvillette, Wriothesley and Clorinde they had all the bags wrangled together. Chevreuse had taken some now that Dehya had Sigewinne. After all, Navia never traveled lightly. The drive was long but the sights were worth it. Sumeru was a very limited driving nation, only having three or four major roadways. No cars were in town, just large parking structures outside of city limits. They wanted to keep the pollution to a minimum and keep their rain forests as beautiful as possible. It was mid afternoon when they arrived at their hotel in Port Ormos. They rented a whole private house owned by the hotel, having such a large group. The luggage was safely loaded into their temporary abode. The port was a bustling city, filled with shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment.“So!” Dehya smiled happily as she set down Sigewinne’s backpack on the couch. “If you're up for it, Candace and I wanted to go on a shopping trip! There's tons of artisans that specialize in making baby toys and clothes and such! However, if todays been too much already, you can say no.”“I’d love to!” Navia said cheerfully.“We can take home whatever you find.” Clorinde kissed Navia’s forehead.“Care if I join you guys?” Chevreuse asked.“Please do…” Candace smiled.“Do you boys want alone time?” Navia grinned. Neuvillette blushed at what she was implying, knowingly implying, in front of everyone.“Sige, you wanna go shopping with Cici and Via or stay here with me and Papa?” Wriothesley asked, squatting down to Sigewinne’s level.“Can I go shopping? I wanna pick stuff out for Carole.” Sigewinne asked sweetly.“Of course you can!” Wriothesley ruffled her hair. He stood back up and fished out his wallet from his back pocket. He handed Clorinde his credit card. “Try to keep it within reason is all I ask.”“Thank you, handsome.” Clorinde pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. “We’ll meet up for dinner like planned?”“Have you heard from Cyno and Tighnari?” Neuvillette asked.“Yeah they're enroute to the port. Should be arriving in a few hours.” Wriothesley confirmed. “We’ll meet you for dinner then. Call if you need anything, love you all.”The girls left the hotel, heading into the city to go explore and shop. The boys had time to burn before Cyno and Tighnari joined them. They would be in Port Ormos for the evening, taking in the new city before heading back to Sumeru city for the rest of their trip. With the time of year it was, the port was filled with floral vendors and exhibits, drawing Navia and Clorinde to the port before they returned to the city to rendezvous with the rest of their friends.Neuvillette and Wriothesley quietly got their family’s belongings sorted and placed throughout the large house. It was a relaxing, small activity to do while they unwinded from the long adventure to the neighboring nation. Somehow it grounded both of them in reality and cut through the vacation fuzz of their mind.Neuvillette had sat down on his and Wriothesley’s bed in the back of the house. Wriothesley had picked this particular hotel suite for more than just having plenty of space for 10 people. It was quiet, in a more secluded side of town and it gave them a chance to have their own bed for a change. Not that Wriothesley was complaining… he loved sleeping in a group like that but occasionally, like this, he liked to have his husband all to himself.“Hey baby…” Wriothesley said softly. Neuvillette looked up from checking his phone on the edge of the bed. Wriothesley was instantly entering his space, placing his hands on his husband’s knees and pressing a soft, tender kiss to his lips. Neuvillette gasped softly in surprise but leaned into the loving gesture. His phone was tossed somewhere on the bed as Neuvillette wrapped his arms around Wriothesley’s neck. His hand slid up into the soft salt and pepper locks, carding through them at first but tugging softly by the end. Wriothesley hummed into the kiss, slowly pushing Neuvillette back on the mattress and crawling on top of him. When Neuvillette’s back hit the cushiony mattress, he felt Wriothesley’s tongue sweep past his bottom lip. His lips parted, letting the dark haired man’s tongue slip into his mouth. Wriothesley took his time, savoring his husband’s mouth. A soft nip to his bottom lip was the parting gesture, leaving Neuvillette panting beneath the larger man.Wriothesley pressed firm, loving kisses down his jaw line to his neck, biting teasingly where his shoulder connected to his neck. Neuvillette gasped, arching off the bed slightly as his back bowed.“You up for it, sweetness?” Wriothesley asked breathlessly.“When it comes to you, I'm always up for anything.” Neuvillette expressed, heat laced in his voice. Wriothesley jutted his hips down into Neuvillette’s, grinding them together. Even through the layers of clothing, Neuvillette could feel just how little it took for Wriothesley to become fully erect. It made the low simmer of lust ignite in his lower belly.“The things you do to me…” Wriothesley murmured lowly. He worked diligently to unbutton Neuvillette’s fitted shirt, nibbling at every inch of exposed skin.Neuvillette’s moans were quiet, sweet hums as love bite after love bite was left on his pale skin. Wriothesley had worked off his shirt in nearly record timing and was now working on his belt. He latched his mouth onto one of his nipples, sucking hard to illicit a sinful sound from Neuvillette. The light haired man choked down a loud moan, trying to be mindful of the fact they weren’t in the comforts of their own home.“Don't hold back on me now.” Wriothesley teased, finally pulling his lover’s belt off. “We will be fine… no one else is here and it's a very quiet part of town.”Wriothesley pulled Neuvillette’s pants off in a swift motion. He withdrew himself off the bed as he pulled his own t-shirt off. He instructed Neuvillette to move to the edge of the bed, adjusting him so that his ass was partially off the mattress.Wriothesley sank to his knees and threw Neuvillette’s long legs over his shoulders. From his point of view, this was the most exquisite sight in the universe. His husband above him, hard and leaking and he had perfect access to his twitching entrance. He reached into the back pocket of his jeans, pulling out a small bottle of lube he had stashed there prior to pinning his husband to the bed. He quickly unsnapped the lid and poured a generous amount into his hand, working it up his fingers.“Please Wrio…” Neuvillette whimpered, panting slightly in anticipation. His thighs trembled, a shiver running down his spine as he peaked between his legs at his husband preparing his fingers.“Please what?” Wriothesley grinned wolfishly from below. “I gotta say I have quite the view right now…”“Touch me… please….” He whined, bucking his hips off the bed slightly. “Admiring isn't what I need right now, it's your touch…”Wriothesley hummed in thought. He could tease Neuvillette endlessly but they were a little short on time. And it had been a while for both of them. With a deep rumble in his chest, he leaned forward. He licked a broad stripe from Neuvillette’s entrance over his perineum over his balls and up his shaft, taking his cock into his mouth when he reached the tip. Neuvillette damn near came by the sensation alone.A finger prodded at the tight ring of muscle as Wriothesley worked Neuvillette’s entire length down his throat. Wriothesley sucked on the hard member with hollow cheeks. He could taste the precum drip onto his tongue every time he withdrew it from his mouth.A hand landed in Wriothesley’s hair, tugging softly at it. The other held tightly onto the comforter of the bed. Neuvillette bit his lip, trying to starve off the orgasm that had already crept up on him. It had been a long while since he was intimate with just Wriothesley and his husband knew how to pick him apart so well that he was on the edge quickly. Usually they were all intimate with each other or, as of late, they just exchanged small touches as Navia hadn't been in the mood much as of late. Not that anyone was complaining.Neuvillette was pulled out of his thoughts as a finger sank deep inside his entrance. Wriothesley’s fingers were long and thick, filling him the moment they penetrate. One was enough to nearly send him back over the edge.He gripped the sheets tighter below him as the finger prodded directly into his prostate. Wriothesley wasn't teasing him at all… he was trying to send him over the edge.“You know what I want, baby…” Wriothesley grinned as pushed in a second finger. Neuvillette’s eyes rolled to the back of his head as both fingers prodded at his most sensitive spot. His husband pressed suckling kisses across Neuvillette’s cock.“No, I want you inside first.” Neuvillette moaned. “Please, I want to cum around your cock!”“Since we are a little pressed for time today.” Wriothesley smirked. He lifted from his knees and slowly unzipped his pants. They dropped to the ground, his boxers not far behind. Neuvillette unconsciously licked his lips at the sight of his naked husband. Even after all these years, Wriothesley was the sexiest man Neuvillette ever laid eyes on and he couldn't get enough of the nude man between his legs.Wriothesley spread lube across his throbbing length, hissing slightly from the friction. He was hard and aching… how could he not be after having his husband’s cock in his mouth?Neuvillette adjusted himself so he wasn't at the edge of the bed. He tucked a pillow under his hips as Wriothesley crawled on top of him. He was boxed in by his husband who looked at him very hungrily from above. Wriothesley looked at him like he wanted to devour him. Those lust filled eyes carried heavy promises to come.Neuvillette wrapped his legs around Wriothesley’s hips and pulled him close. Wriothesley pressed the head of his cock to the bottom man's tight entrance. He pushed into him slowly, giving Neuvillette a chance to adjust to the large intrusion.Neuvillette moaned as each inch entered him. It was agonizingly slow. By the time Wriothesley finally filled him, he was already close to the edge. His husband's thick cock nearly crushed his prostate at every push and pull. It set the sensitive bundle of nerves on fire.“How do you feel, baby? Because fuck…” Wriothesley groaned. “Neuvi, you feel so fucking good around me.” Neuvillette was so warm and tight around him. He definitely wouldn't last long at all.“Very full…” Neuvillette panted. His chest was rising and falling heavily. “Move beloved. I told you I wanted to cum with you inside me…”“You want it hard and fast or slow and deep?” Wriothesley groaned as Neuvillette squeezed around him. He had to be milking his cock on purpose and the sensation nearly made Wriothesley’s eyes roll back.“Hard and fast. I can take it.” Neuvillette tightened around him hard enough to cause Wriothesley to squeeze the bottom man’s hips in a punishing grip. Neuvillette may have hand shaped bruises in the morning.Wriothesley left one more hickey on Neuvillette’s chest before he pulled back slightly and adjusted his grip. He pulled back until it was just the tip inside Neuvillette then pushed all the way back in with a fluid motion. It punched all the air out of Neuvillette’s lungs. But Wriothesley gave him no time to recover, keeping up the brutal pace. With the way he was going, Neuvillette was going to cum untouched. Every time he pulled out and pushed back in, Neuvillette saw stars. He was so, so full. His cock was heavy in his entrance, pressing down on his most sensitive places in a building rhythm.“Wriothesley!” Neuvillette moaned. He had precum leaking onto his stomach, the tip flushed. He hasn't let go of sheets the entire time.“You getting close?” Wriothesley asked with a grunt. He could feel Neuvillette getting tighter (was that even possible?) and his breath getting heavier. The pace changed, Wriothesley grinding in slow and deep. He reached down and took a hold of Neuvillette’s leaking cock. He squeezed beneath the head, swiping his thumb through the precum beading. It was all the touch Neuvillette needed to fall over the edge. He cried out as he came, painting Wriothesley’s hand and his stomach white. It made his vision blur, hot heat filling his body. His body tensed, his insides throbbing around Wriothesley’s cock.Wriothesley didn't stop his thrusts, groaning and rocking through the bottom man's orgasm. His entrance felt so damn good but he needed a little more to fall over the edge. He moved back to a punishing pace, driving Neuvillette into a state of overstimulation. Tears gathered in the corner of Neuvillette’s eyes as he was fucked way past his orgasm. He was a moaning, whining, sobbing mess beneath Wriothesley.A dozen more thrusts and Wriothesley’s body tensed. His orgasm washed over him hard, sending full body shivers down his form. Neuvillette would definitely be full and leaking for a few days by how much he came.Wriothesley peppered kisses across Neuvillette’s face as he came down from his high. It would definitely take him a little while to come back to reality with how far Wriothesley pushed him into overstimulation.Wriothesley had barely pulled out to begin cleaning up when there was a knock at the door. He swore under his breath and yelled that he would be there in a moment. He quickly cleaned up Neuvillette then himself. He threw on his clothes before heading to the door.On the front steps stood Cyno and a blushing Tighnari with his ears tilted down and backwards. Wriothesley had an inkling why the Valuka Shuna was looking shy.“Glad you guys made it down here safe.” Cyno smirked. “I see you got… alone time.”“Damn it you heard didn't you?” Wriothesley sighed.“Just Nari did.” Cyno said.“I didn't mean to…” Tighnari murmured. “I have really good hearing and well… Neuvillette and I have something in common. We aren't quiet when we orgasm.”“Sorry about that. It's been a while for all of us.” Wriothesley rubbed the back of his hand anxiously.“No need to be sorry.” Cyno reassured. “We are all grown adults in relationships. We all have sex. It's all good, glad we didn't interrupt part way, ya know?”“If you two would like to come and hang out in the living room, I just need to make sure Neuvillette is coming back to reality okay.” Wriothesley stepped aside and let the two into the small living room of the hotel suite. He rushed down the hallway to find Neuvillette asleep in the bed, half covered like how he left him. He was completely oblivious to the fact anyone was ever at the door or his partner’s brief departure.Wriothesley sat on the edge of the bed, gently running a hand down Neuvillette’s bareback. The light haired man stirred easily, being a light sleeper by nature. He turned to his back and smiled up at his husband.“Welcome back to the world of the living.” Wriothesley chuckled. “You feeling okay, Neuvi?”“More than okay.” Neuvillette smiled. “Someone was at the door?”“Yeah Cyno and Tighnari made it out here.” Wriothesley said. “Tighnari also… heard… a little bit.”Neuvillette’s entire upper body flushed red. He sat up on his elbow. “I think we owe them dinner…”“We can swing that.” Wriothesley laughed. He kissed Neuvillette’s forehead softly. “Do you think you're able to get out of bed and get ready?”“Give me a few moments.” Neuvillette said softly. “I’ll be out shortly.”Wriothesley nodded and returned to the living room where their friends were. They chatted while they waited for Neuvillette to appear, who did about 20 minutes later. He was tying his long hair up as he greeted their friends. They left the hotel suite and hit the streets of Port Ormos. Wriothesley sent a text to Clorinde to see where they were, and to make sure his credit card didn't hit the limit. He knew how Navia got while shopping. They went down to main street and towards the light house on the pier. Clorinde’s text said that they were at a playground near the lighthouse so Sigewinne could play with some local kids. Neuvillette snuck a few photos of Sigewinne sliding down the tall slide as they approached. She hadn't even noticed her fathers or uncles approaching, too busy playing with a small group of kids around her age.“Cyno! Nari!” Navia chirped happily, pouncing on the two Sumeru boys as they approached.“Hey there, Navia… did you get to shop with Dehya and Candace?” Cyno asked, hugging back.“Yes! Oh there's so many cool shops down here! I can't wait to see what Sumeru city has to offer as well!” Navia cheered.Tighnari pulled back in the hug and observed Navia. His tail swished behind him as he looked her over. “Was the flight okay? Is it too hot out here for you? Baby treating you okay?” He fretted.“Flight was fine… don’t worry Nari, between the boys, Clorinde, Candace and Dehya I am beyond hydrated. Carole and I are doing perfect. I appreciate the concern.” Navia grinned at the fretting fox examining her.Over the past four years, Navia and Clorinde have gotten as close with the Sumeru gang as the boys were. Navia messaged Candace, Dehya and Tighnari almost every single day. Clorinde had gotten close to Alhaitham and Cyno as well as Marina’s partners. Chevreuse was slowly making her way into the circle of friends as well. It was their chosen family after all.Clorinde came over and ran a hand down Wriothesley’s back softly. “Did you two figure it out?” She asked teasingly.“If you're asking if we humped, you are correct.” Wriothesley smirked as Neuvillette flushed beside him.“Good work.” Clorinde grinned. “I couldn't tell who was more pent up between the two of you.”“Between cases and work and school and life, none of us get an opportunity to often anymore.” Wriothesley laughed. “Want us to create a diversion so you can sneak off with Navia?”“Won't be necessary.” Clorinde shrugged. She patted both Neuvillette and Wriothesley on the shoulder and walked off, leaving her statement to their imagination.“Yo, we got reservations in a half hour, how long of a walk is it?” Chevreuse asked.“We should head off.” Cyno confirmed. “It depends mostly on how busy the streets are but with the festival we shouldn’t risk it.”Wriothesley called for Sigewinne, who was delighted to see her fathers and uncles. They made their way through the crowded streets to Djafar’s cafe. It came highly recommended by their friends. The large group sat at one of the outdoor tables and talked the night away, enjoying the new cuisine and drinks Sumeru had to offer. The sun was long below the horizon when they finally made their way back to the hotel suite.Crossing over the bridge to the entry of the hotel, they heard a loud boom. Wriothesley froze, not sure of what the sound was. It came again shortly after. “Look daddy!” Sigewinne called, pointing over the side of the bridge towards the heart of downtown Port Ormos. In the distance, fireworks burst in a bright rain of color over the river. A small closing ceremony for the festival. Wriothesley bent low to the ground, offering Sigewinne to jump on his shoulders for a better view. She scrambled up, holding onto him as she watched the colors fracture the starry night.Neuvillette came up beside them on the bridge, resting his head on one of Wriothesley’s shoulders as they watched the display. Slowly the others joined them. Navia wrapping an arm around Wriothesley’s broad back. Clorinde stood behind Navia, resting her head on top of her wife’s head. Chevreuse joined Navia’s side. Cyno and Tighnari sat on the bench behind them, snapping photos of the happy family enjoying the festival fireworks. Dehya and Candace held hands as they watched quietly from the edge of the bridge near the hotel. It was a happy moment, one that Wriothesley, Chevreuse and Clorinde would hold onto for a long time. A moment that would get them through the dark. When the fireworks ended, they made their way inside the hotel suite. One by one they fell into their temporary beds. The Fontainians were exhausted from their busy day and travel. It was a short getaway, jam packed with a lot of activities and friends to visit. Even with the loaded schedule, everyone felt more relaxed than they had been in a very long time. The sun came up a lot faster than anyone wanted it to. They groggily got up, gathering what little they unpacked and got ready for the day. Their next stop was Sumeru city. They needed to drop their stuff off at the other hotel there then they were off to Gandharvaville for the day. Sumeru City was as bustling as they all remembered. Street vendors called for passersby to come visit their booth. Street performers danced and played instruments nearby. Shoppers scurried around the large pathways in search of their necessities. The hotel was at the far end of the city, near the pathway to Gandharvaville. Like Port Ormos, it was a private secluded area where they had a large house to themselves. Wriothesley had planned ahead, knowing most of them would bunk with the Fontainians… out of convenience more than anything but also quality time.Their bags were discarded in their final home for the trip. Tighnari had suggested that they pack towels, water and some snacks. They rest briefly before heading out to Gandharvaville. They took it slow, giving Sigewinne and Navia breaks in between the trek from the hotel to the tree house filled forest. Tighnari had promised it would be worth the hike. The only ones who knew where they were going were Cyno and Tighnari after all, not even Dehya and Candace knew where exactly they were going. They met Collei at the entrance to Gandharvaville, greeting the group cheerfully. She joined them as they hiked the secondary short path to their destination. Tighnari had led them down to a large waterfall nearby, the river cutting through the large forest community. It wasn't roaring but instead tranquil. The waterfall had a wonderful background sound. This was the destination that was the surprise. It's hidden in plain sight. Even Dehya and Candace hadn't seen this place before. The river was shallow near the banks and only about thigh deep at the deepest. Plants and flora bloomed all around the hollow that housed the falls. The river was filled with fish. Small animals used the river as their waterhole, food source and home. You couldn't tell the city was within walking distance from here. This is where they spent the day. Spear fishing, collecting plants, Tighnari explaining different applications to the flowers and herbs they picked, swimming in the shallow water and resting. It was a day spent in nature, one the family rarely ever had. They stayed in the hollow past dark, cooking the fish they caught on an open fire. They stayed a little longer, watching the stars in the pure night sky. With so little light pollution this far in the wilderness, the stars shone with a brightness that they didn't get in Fontaine unless they were in the mountains. They packed it up when Sigewinne was fast asleep in Clorinde’s lap. She had been splashing in the water all day and gathering plants, soaking up every word Tighnari and Collei told her about the species of flora she had in her hand. Such a busy day left the little one exhausted.Clorinde and Dehya took turns carrying Sigewinne back to Sumeru City. It was a peaceful quiet night. The forest was laced with sounds of nocturnal animals and bugs. Collei, Cyno and Tighnari stayed the night in Gandharvaville, promising to meet them all in the morning for breakfast when the group was reunited. Wriothesley carried Navia back to the hotel on his back. She was exhausted from the warm day and was just too tired to walk back. Boy was she grateful that she weighed practically nothing to Wriothesley.Morning came faster than anyone would have liked. Candace however, was already up making breakfast for them. She had snuck off to the market early that morning to surprise everyone. Navia was more than delighted to wake up to fresh food! There was a knock at the hotel suite door shortly after breakfast. Kaveh and Alhaitham were there to greet their friends. They weren't able to make it out to Port Ormos or with them to the forest the day prior due to their work schedules. But the next two days, they were spending time with their friends from abroad. It brought back memories from what felt like centuries ago for both Wriothesley and Neuvillette. They spent the day shopping around treasure street. Navia, after all, was the queen of shopping. By the time they made it to the grand bazaar, Navia had bought enough stuff to fill an entire extra suitcase. Shopping was her favorite pass time after all, and Carole gave her even more reason to shop.Nilou spotted them in the grand bazaar, practically jumping off stage and running over to her friends. She greeted each of them, hugging Sigewinne extra tight. She very rarely joined them on their trips to Fontaine to see the others, only really seeing Sigewinne and her parents via video chat or through pictures.“Oh I missed you little one.” Nilou gushed as she brushed Sigewinne’s hair back into place. “You're growing up too fast! I remember when you were a baby coming to a show for the first time.”“I missed you too, Auntie Nilou!” Sigewinne smiled.“Have you been getting the pictures we've been sending?” Neuvillette asked.“Oh yes!” Nilou smiled. “I appreciate that you keep me in the loop even after all these years.”“Of course… you're part of our Sumeru family after all. You helped keep Marina and Winne safe and sound.” Wriothesley smiled.“All I did was dance.” Nilou laughed. “Which… Nari, are you still up for helping me out tomorrow?”“Of course… I've been practicing.” Tighnari smirked. “Although I do think Kaveh is a better dancer than me at this point. He's taken the role of helping me out very seriously.”“Would you like to come up too, Kaveh?” Nilou offered.“I'm alright.” Kaveh waved off the offer. “I’d rather be in the crowd watching with everyone. The stage isn't particularly for me.”“Someones modest.” Tighnari teased. “For the first time ever.”“We get to see the show tomorrow right?” Chevreuse asked the others. “Wriothesley said the first time he saw Nilou’s performance it was life changing. I've been looking forward to seeing it myself.”“We will be in the crowd for sure.” Clorinde confirmed.“I think we plan on coming down here after we visit the Akademiya tomorrow.” Wriothesley said, thinking back on how the vacation was planned.“Yes, tomorrow morning we go to the Akademiya for a full tour and then we come back here for the show. Then after the party at Lambads to send you all off.” Alhaitham confirmed.“Nilou, if you'd like, we are all going to Alhaitham and Kaveh’s house after this to play cards. You're more than welcome to join us.” Cyno offered.“As much as I’d love to, I need to finish preparing for the show tomorrow.” Nilou smiled. “But I will see you all tomorrow at the show and afterward!” Alhaitham and Kaveh’s home was packed to the gills with people. Pedestrians walking by probably heard all sorts of sounds. Laughter. Small arguments. Victory calls and more. The large table in the dining room, once covered in books, now housed Clorinde, Chevreuse, Cyno, Tighnari, Kaveh and Dehya. They were in their third round of Genius Invokation TCG, Cyno’s favorite game and one that swept the Sumeru friends by storm. Neuvillette had picked it up over the years, so he was watching the game, more as a score keeper and assistant to Chevreuse and Clorinde. For Chevreuse and Clorinde, they had only learned how to play recently and needed the extra assistance to challenge the formidable Cyno.Candace, Sigewinne, Wriothesley, Alhaitham and Navia were in the kitchen. They had lively discussions as Candace and Alhaitham taught Sigewinne and Navia how to make baklava. It was mundane moments like this Wriothesley adored. Watching their blended family form memories like these. Everyone was content, the worries of their lives gone in the confines of the warm, lively space.By the time the baklava was finished, Cyno was pouting at the table, upset about his second defeat in a row by Clorinde. Beginners' luck he claimed. Little did he know that playing any sort of game with Clorinde was an automatic loss. She was far too competitive to allow anyone to win besides her… well except maybe Navia. Even if she barely knew the game she would figure out how to win within the first couple of rounds. They stayed late in the night, playing games and chatting until Sigewinne was fast asleep in Neuvillette’s arms. He rocked her softly, more out of habit than anything. They said their goodbyes, excited to see each other in the morning as it was. The group returned to their hotel suite, leaving Kaveh and Alhaitham alone in their home that was much too quiet now. When morning came, they reunited in front of the Akademiya. Alhaitham offered them a full tour, with some persuasion from madam Faruzan who was still infatuated by Sigewinne’s intelligence. They found Alhaitham and Kaveh talking to Faruzan in the main lobby of the Akademiya. Kaveh waved the group over.“Hey you guys!” Faruzan greeted warmly. “I'm so glad you guys are spending your last day in Sumeru wandering the halls of our esteemed institute!”“You sound like you're the grand sage. Do you want my job? I’ll happily go back to the scribe.” Alhaitham raised a brow at the enthusiastic woman.“Oh no, I am more than happy being a professor.” Faruzan reassured. “Let me be proud of our institute! Its one of a kind and the best in the world after all!”“It's endearing to see you so excited to lead our little one around.” Clorinde smiled. “But it will be quite a few years before she's able to do an exchange, if that's what she chooses to do.”“I go to a really cool academy now!” Sigewinne chirped. “I think when I'm old enough I wanna come here! As long as daddy, papa, Cici and Via are okay with it and Carole can come visit me at least once!”“I think that can be arranged.” Dehya smirked at the little one's parents, ruffling her hair.“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. We have a little bit of time before Carole is even born.” Navia said. They chatted for a few more minutes in the lobby before Wriothesley’s phone rang. The only reason he answered it was because it was the Chief. The man knew they were on vacation, a boundary he wouldn't even cross unless it was an emergency. Wriothesley excused himself from the group and answered the call.“Hey, Chief… is everything okay?”“Captain…” The Chief’s voice was tense. “I'm sorry for bothering you on vacation, I really am… but there's an emergency case. I need you to look at it immediately.”“Yeah we head to the airport in the morning. I can look when we return to Fontaine.” Wriothesley said.“No.” The Chief’s tone left no room for argument. “It needs to be looked at as soon as possible. Wriothesley this is bad. This involves your whole world. This case could be bigger than the Doctor’s case.”“Chief, just tell me what's happening.” Wriothesley demanded.“There are three victims… that appear to be connected to your team. You will see when I send you the file. But homicide didn't connect the dots until this final victim appeared. Captain Letelle has offered his sincerest apologies. The team should have connected the dots before…” Chief paused for a moment. “Before a new missing person was filed.”“You think they are connected?” Wriothesley asked.“Yes we do. That's why I need you on this immediately. It's a strict classification. Keep this on the confidencial side where possible. Keep me in the loop. The files will be sent to your email in a few minutes.” Chief explained.“I’ll get the team together now and look over everything now. I'm sure Cyno will be fine with me commandeering his office.” Wriothesley said, approaching the group again.“Ask his opinion on the case. It may come in handy.” Chief said. “I look forward to hearing your opinion.”The call ended and Wriothesley reentered the group. All eyes were on him, confused looks littering them all. He felt his phone buzz in his hand before he could even slide it in his back pocket. It was the case file arriving in his work email.“I hate to do this but we have a case.” Wriothesley said, almost sheepishly.“Is it that bad that our personal vacation time got interrupted?” Clorinde asked.“However bad you're thinking, increase it by ten fold. I don't know many details but from what it sounds like… we are in for a hell of a case.” Wriothesley sighed.“Come on… let's head to my office.” Cyno offered. “We can catch up to the rest of the group later on.”Before they could head out, Wriothesley pulled Dehya aside to whisper in her ear, “Protect my family at all costs. I trust that you can?”“Ah…” Dehya chuckled. “I got ya boss… consider it done.”They arrived in Cyno’s office a short time later. He locked the door behind him after he confirmed it was fine he heard the case. The file was forwarded to Cyno’s email and was pulled up on the large screen on his office wall.“Okay…” Wriothesley sighed. “We are gonna be learning details together on this one. Chief didn't give me much to go on besides this is probably the worst case Fontaine has faced yet.”“Well let's get started then.” Chevreuse said. She flipped through the documents in her hand, each person having a copy.“First victim is a 17 year old female.” Wriothesley said. Cyno pulled up the crime scene photos. The body was posed, a leaflet of paper in the center of her chest. “Cause of death was smoke inhalation. Coroner’s report says her eye was removed… antemortem. Her hair was cut and dyed postmortem.” The girl in the photo was eerily similar to Chevreuse. Long hair dyed purple with white highlights around the face. Eye removed and sewn shut. Even her body type was nearly identical to Chevreuse; thin and shorter in height.“Shit…” Chevreuse was ghost white looking at the screen. “That… that's me?”“It does look awfully like you. And the smoke inhalation death cannot be a coincidence given the fact your rifle’s specialty is fire rounds.” Clorinde said.“Second victim is a 23 year old female.” Wriothesley started as Cyno moved to the next photos in the file. The body was identical to the first… posed with a leaflet of paper on her chest. She was found in a park beneath a tree, just like the victim prior. “Cause of death was a heart attack induced by electrocution.” She had burn marks littered across her entire body, likely from some sort of high voltage cattle prod. “Coroner report states her shoulder was completely dislocated and clavicle was broken antemortem. Her hair was colored postmortem.” Like the first victim, her hair was dyed purple but a much richer color. Her hair was pulled back into a low ponytail, like the one Clorinde wore daily. She was tall and thin, just like Clorinde.“Those were my injuries after operation: DOCTOR. And I use electricity in my pistol and in my shoes to run faster.” Clorinde grimaced. “Heart attack is my most common risk every time we lift our restrictions.”“So the unsub knows you guys well… well enough to know your injuries you've sustained over your missions.” Cyno added.“It also looks like they're getting more personal with each kill. More time is being spent.” Chevreuse pointed out. “First victim had 2 days between being reported missing and appearing in the park. Second victim was reported 5 days before being discovered.”“Well… there's more.” Wriothesley sighed. He had peaked enough ahead to know what was in store. “The third victim was a 32 year old male. Cause of death… inconclusive due to the number of fatal wounds.” The next images were gruesome. Enough that Clorinde, who was usually pretty stoic at work, gasped in response. The body was discovered in a field, same posing, same paper. But the damage… the similarities…“Based on what the coroner could figure out… most damage was antemortem.” Wriothesley grit his teeth. The victim was covered in burn marks… likely from cigarettes. He was covered in slash marks and wounds, even some tattoos being completely cut off his body. Puncture wounds on his side looked to be done by nails, the ribs underneath broken by blunt force. Evidence of sexual assault but no DNA found. Worst of all… his heart was cut out.“It's like looking in a fucking mirror.” Wriothesley mumbled under his breath. The man had black and silver hair… even the cow licks were identical to Wriothesley’s hair. They even had two matching tattoos on their arms. Both were large, bulky builds. This is what he could have ended up like if his sister didn't save him all those years ago.“The difference in time being reported missing and being found is… 10 days…” Chevreuse said. “I hate to be the one to say it but I think you may be the primary target here captain.”“I wouldn't be so sure.” Cyno chimed in. “Missing person report on the next page… a 27 year old female. Who does it look like to you three?”“Fuck.” Clorinde growled. “It's Navia isn't it?”“My best guess.” Cyno admitted. “He's never changed the victim's eyes. I'm not sure how he's finding such perfect victims to mimic you all but I'm sure it's been in the works for a long time. These are disturbingly premeditated. He has to have some sort of large work area, a way to hold victims and it's secluded enough he hasn't been caught yet.”“You think its a he huh?” Chevreuse asked. “You're right… They truly are like us physically. These are essentially our dopplegangers. Similarities I'm not even sure we know the full extent of yet.”“He has no pattern in keeping victims besides the fact that it's increasing. So we have no idea how long we actually have to find her.” Wriothesley admitted. “That's worrisome to me right now. It's such an unknown variable that is usually pretty in place by this point in a budding serial killer.”“I don't think he's budding. I think there are other victims out there in your cold case files somewhere. This is way too personal and planned to be a first time kill. Have you ever heard of a first kill being smoke inhalation? That's a challenging cause of death that can definitely backfire. It takes practice. The first victim was certainly not his first ever kill.” Cyno pointed out.“Has anyone else read the notes left on each victim?” Clorinde asked. “These… Did we ever release documents from the Doctor’s case?”“No, we never made any of them public due to their disturbing nature. We didn't want a copycat. They are locked in our archives.” Chevreuse confirmed. “Only approved members of the special forces can even access the case now. I built the firewall around that case myself. It's impenetrable.”“I read through most of those notes myself over the years.” Wriothesley started as he flipped through the images of the notes left on the bodies. “These… were not among them.”The notes left were graphic. They indeed looked authentic from the Doctor, the handwriting being very distinct. But these were notes about Marina’s genetic mutation… day by day.“How long was she experimented on again?” Cyno asked.“7 days.” Clorinde sighed. “So there should be a total of seven lost documents. We are looking at three of them.”“When we return tomorrow, we need to start combing through the Doctor's old files. We need to confirm this isn't something we just missed. And if they're not from the case…” Wriothesley paused.“I’ll ask Candace if she can locate the old lab.” Cyno announced. “Her and Dehya know the desert well enough they are the best bet to find it. What's the status of the Fontaine lab?”“It was demolished after we cleared it out four years ago alongside the safe house. Nothing but debris now.” Chevreuse said.“If you’ll allow me, Captain Wriothesley… I'd like to come back to Fontaine with you guys. Assist in the case.” Cyno offered.“That would be appreciated if Sumeru can spare their General Mahamatra.” Wriothesley sighed. “We are biting off a bit more than I expected when we received this call today. I totally get why Letelle offered his entire team and resources to assist us.”“We should head to the grand bazaar.” Clorinde stood up. “We need to tell the others what's going on. We don’t know if Sumeru is entirely safe right now and…” She bit her lip. “I… I know they’re strong and can handle themselves fine but…” She looked at Wriothesley with sad eyes he's only seen a half dozen times. “Wrio we have a lot more to worry about this time around. We have a baby on the way and Sigewinne to protect now. We can't go in guns blazing anymore. We can't let them out of our sight.”“Hey they're okay, Rinde.” Wriothesley took her hand. “Dehya is watching them. That's what I whispered to her before we came here. Maybe we can see if she would be willing to return to Fontaine with us. If not we’ll figure it out. They’ll be safe.”“I need to call Charlotte and make sure she stays in Liyue until this blows over.” Chevreuse realized. “Capt… care if I bunk at your place until we finish this case?”“Yeah of course. It may come in handy for us to be all in one place… I have a feeling we will be having a lot of long nights.” Wriothesley sighed. “Alright… I’ll call the Chief and give a preliminary report. As soon as we land tomorrow we need to head to the office. I want all of us going through the Doctor’s files to make sure these notes are newly found. We’ll start rebuilding each victim's final paths and see if there's any overlap and I'm going to see if we can interview anyone close to the missing girl. Anything to add?”“I can set up a program in the office to go through the Doctor’s files. I can search by keywords. There's over 50 boxes of just notes in storage and all of them should be scanned in. I can take charge of confirming all notes are scanned in and all that.” Chevreuse said.“I’ll call and see where everyone is at.” Clorinde stepped out of the locked office.Wriothesley made the call to the Chief while Cyno handled deleting the files from his computer and shredding the print outs. This case was highly classified, no trace could really be left behind in Sumeru. The rest of the group had made their way through the Akademiya and were in the grand bazaar. The police investigators hadn't realized how close they were cutting it for Nilou’s performance. When they arrived, Dehya gave Wriothesley a questioning look. He did owe them an explanation.“I'm so glad you guys made it!” Nilou called out, waving to the officers as they approached.“I was starting to get worried.” Neuvillette smiled, leaning into his husband as a hand ran across his lower back.“Yeah, is there somewhere private we can all talk?” Wriothesley asked. The crowd was filing into the audience as show time approached.“Follow me…” Nilou smiled. She led the large group backstage to her dressing room. She wasn't sure what was going on for sure but she knew it was absolutely serious. “Hey Sigewinne.” She kneeled down to the little one. “Why don't we go make sure everything is prepared backstage? We’ll be right in the line of sight and then we can come back!”“Let's make sure your show is perfect!” Sigewinne smiled and took Nilou’s hand. They stepped out of the room and Wriothesley sighed. Dehya stood near the door and kept watch over Sigewinne nearby.“So here's the situation…” Wriothesley started. “We are all in danger.”“Well that ominous.” Navia chuckled nervously.“No Via…” Clorinde stepped up. “This is bad. Extremely bad. We are returning to duty the moment we land in Fontaine tomorrow.”“The case has now started. There's three victims so far and one missing person. Each victim so far is representing a member of team Cerberus. By representing I mean they're almost identical to us in look and they're being murdered in ways very… personal to us.” Wriothesley said. His tone was heavy, trying to convey the seriousness of the situation.“The first victim represented me. They had their eye cut out and sewn shut. Cause of death was smoke inhalation. I am the member of the team who specializes in exploding flame rounds and fire.” Chevreuse explained.“Second victim was representing me.” Clorinde sighed. “Their arm, clavicle and shoulder were broken. Cause of death was a heart attack via electrocution. My pistol is designed for electric shock and I use it to run faster if a perp is escaping. Those were also my injuries in the final showdown with Dottore.”“Third victim represents me.” Wriothesley scratched the back of his hand anxiously until Neuvillette forced it into his own hand. “Cause of death was unknown due to the extent of damage to the body. But it was more than likely his heart being cut out of his chest. He had similar marks I bear due to my childhood. Some marks I got while working on operation: DOCTOR. We even had matching tattoos…”“There's a missing person right now.” Cyno added. “We believe they will represent Navia. Time is of the essence here and no one is safe. I've volunteered to return to Fontaine to help catch this unsub in a timely manner and as an extra resource. This case is going to be challenging and there needs to be as much man power as possible.”“I’ll cover any paperwork you have here if you give your captain's duty instruction.” Alhaitham said. “And I will be available by call if you need advice or a new point of view.”“I have a favor to ask.” Cyno looked at Candace. “Do you remember where the old lab is in the wastelands?”“Not an exact location but I'm sure it can be found.” Candace nodded.“It needs to be located. There were notes left among the victims. Notes from the Doctor describing Marina’s experimentation. These documents are not among the recovered ones from the Fontaine lab. It's possible there's more out there we don't know about.” Cyno explained.“Consider it done, general.” Candace smiled. “I will also check out the dummy lab we found Tighnari in as well.”“I can accompany Candace in the desert. Madam Faruzan will be more than willing to help as well. We can pilot Mehrek into smaller areas for a more thorough search.” Kaveh offered.“I'm coming with Cyno back to Fontaine.” Dehya announced from the doorway. “I can help with the case or be a bodyguard for Navia or Sigewinne. Truly, whatever is needed, I will be there for.”“I'm coming along too.” Tighnari smiled. “I can assist wherever I'm needed but most importantly I want to help. Collei can lead the forest rangers while I'm gone. Having the Doctor involved in this case to some capacity means we need as many of us that were in the original case as possible.”“Good point Nari… we should pull the names of everyone who ever had a role, no matter how big or small, in the operation and have background checks pulled or fully monitor them for suspicious activities.” Cyno said.“We greatly appreciate all of the support.” Wriothesley smiled. “This case is definitely going to be challenging. The special forces homicide team hasn't found a single connection yet. Letelle is a smart man… good at what he does. Has many more years of experience on us. So we are basically working from the ground up on this one.”“We know there's a lot more at stake this time.” Clorinde stepped forward. “We have Sigewinne to worry about and Carole on the way. The case will be handled swiftly so it is tried before we all leave for a while. But… this does mean we will need to set some rules into place for safety measures. We can discuss it more when we are back home safe. Just know that until we figure out who this is or what their true target is… everyone needs to be as cautious as possible.”“We’ll be okay, Rinde.” Navia smiled, trying to reassure her wife.“Swat will clear our home shortly before we land to make sure it's safe. Sige’s school has already been made aware of the situation and I'm sure the district attorney is already aware.” Wriothesley promised.“Let's head out to the audience.” Neuvillette suddenly chimed in. “There's no use mulling over potentials right now. Lets enjoy our final hours in Sumeru, we are safe here among friends. The show is going to start shortly anyway.”Team Cerberus nodded in agreement. They did their best to compartmentalize things enough that they could enjoy the short time they had remaining on vacation. Horrors that await them are on the horizon… it wasn't a crime to live in the beautiful moments they had in their hands now. They filed out of the back stage, filling their seats in the audience. Sigewinne took Navia’s hand as she passed, excited to watch the show.Nilou’s performance was everything Wriothesley remembered. She had only improved her craft over time. Her dance was light, airy, filled with emotion. She pulled Tighnari on stage half way through. He joined in her dance, gliding across the stage with her in hand. Sigewinne was mesmerized by the dancing, her eyes never leaving the stage the entire act. When the curtains fell, the large group stood up and cheered, giving a slight shock to the audience. Back stage, they could hear Nilou’s soft giggles of delight. She was probably blushing. They all met at Lambad’s after the show. A celebration of their time in Sumeru, their friendship and another wonderful show by Nilou. It seemed on the outside, everyone had forgotten about the doom looming on the horizon. Kaveh had to be carried home by Alhaitham by the time they closed the place down. One too many glasses of wine. Tighnari slipped back to Gandharvaville. He had to prepare for the leave of absence. Cyno went to his office to prepare. Dehya had all she needed, being a nomad herself for the most part. They retired back to the hotel suite for the night, Sigewinne barely awake anyway. Navia settled her into bed and tucked her in. Everyone went to their beds to settle in for the night. They were flying back to Fontaine very early in the morning.Neuvillette woke up when he felt the bed go cold. He sat up in bed, realizing his husband was no longer in the room with him. He could hear Navia and Clorinde asleep nearby and Chevreuse’s loud snoring in the other room. With a soft sigh, he left his final bits of sleep behind and checked on everyone. When everyone was asleep in their beds with no sign of Wriothesley anywhere, he almost went into a panic. One last place to check… the outside patio. When Neuvillette went to pull the door open, he realized it was unlocked. Quietly, he opened the door and pressed it close. Hidden in the shadows of the outdoor patio, Neuvillette saw Wriothesley leaning on the railing, staring off into the jungle below.“Beloved, what's wrong?” Neuvillette asked softly. “It's been a long time since you snuck out of bed like this.” His voice was laced with concern.“Sorry…” Wriothesley smiled weakly at his husband, almost looking like a sad puppy. “I just… couldn't sleep and the fresh air was helping me calm down a bit.”“Anger or anxiety?” Neuvillette asked. He gently coerced Wriothesley to face him, the dark haired man’s back now pressing against the railing.“Anxiety… the walls felt tight so I came outside.” Wriothesley admitted. “This case is… something else. I kept trying to come up with ideas on who the hell could be behind this. They know so much about us all. It could be someone we arrested but team Cerberus has made over 300 arrests since we joined the force. All our pasts are so broad that it could be literally thousands of people and I have zero criteria to narrow the search down. The more I thought about it the more I added onto the suspect pool and its not helpful at this point and-,”“Darling.” Neuvillette put his hands on Wriothesley’s face, forcing a sharp shutter from his spine. “You are spiraling. It is okay… you do not need a suspect pool this instant. Tomorrow we will be back in Fontaine. You will have unlimited resources at your disposal. You can narrow things as you go. Please do not drive yourself mad tonight over it.”“Neuvi there's a missing girl out there. If I dont figure this out fast she's gonna die.” Wriothesley’s voice was barely above a whisper.“And Chief and Captain Letelle are working on that as we speak. There is nothing we can do until tomorrow. And it isn't just you. You have the best team in Fontaine. They will help you catch the culprit. Until then all you can do is prepare your war face.”Wriothesley looked down at the ground, his eyes seemingly darker than usual. This case was eating him alive already. He knew keeping what happened at Lambad’s was going to freak everyone out… hell it freaked him out. But this was Neuvillette… his partner… his safe space. He told Neuvillette everything on his mind. He trusted all his partners wholly. But was this too much?“It… took me some time to figure out what the purpose of all this was. Why were we receiving this message? What was the point of the murders when no demands were made? Who was the primary target?” Wriothesley pulled out his phone from his pocket. “Well… I got the answer while we were in Lambads.”Neuvillette took the phone from him cautiously. It was an unknown number, a Fontainian one. It was a simple message with 3 photo attachments following.“What are you willing to lose, Captain Wriothesley?” was what the text message had said. Below were the three photos. All photos were brand new to both mens eyes. They had no idea how any of them even existed. The angles felt unnatural. It felt like it was from a camera, not a surveillance still image. The first one was of Marina and a young Sigewinne, talking outside near the police station. It was the day Marina gave up Sigewinne to the police station and she ended up in the family’s care. The second picture was Clorinde and Navia leaving the doctor's office after the most recent ultrasound for Carole, shortly before they left for Sumeru. The third photo was Neuvillette on a jog one morning with Chevreuse, the photo appearing to be from their college days. All different timelines… but all of the people Wriothesley cared for more than anything.“You're the primary target.” Neuvillette put the pieces together. “The victims representing all of you is to get under your skin.”“And the fact the third victim bore the marks from my childhood abuse. They could have easily been shot in the chest like I was in the last mission of operation: DOCTOR like the others had been.” Wriothesley pulled Neuvillette into a soft hug. He needed to be grounded before he said the next part. “I… traced the phone number. I wanted to see if it would help me narrow my suspensions down.”“And? Who does the number belong to?” Neuvillette asked, face buried in the other’s shoulder.“...My father…” Wriothesley sighed. “Didn't even know people still knew his name but yeah… even the area code is that of where I grew up.”“How did they find that out? I don't even know your parents' names, and we have been together almost a decade now.” Neuvillette raised a brow.“Well it is a public death certificate so if you know what you're looking for it wouldn't be too challenging to find. Nor is it an incredibly common name. It's also very rural out there as you know… most people don't have cell phones. This one appears to be a burner, offline now I can't trace it. But it's definitely a taunt.” Wriothesley closed his eyes. “Whoever I pissed off really wants me to feel it.”“Well we will make sure justice is delivered.” Neuvillette reassured. “Have you told the others about this yet?”“No… I played it off when Clorinde asked. I will tell them tomorrow. I didn't want to ruin our last night here. All hell is going to break loose the moment we land tomorrow. For christ sake we have SWAT going through our house beforehand and we have friends coming back with us as essentially bodyguards. I'm considering bringing home our service pistols. This isn't going to be an easy case and I won't take our safety lightly.” Wriothesley pulled back slightly to look Neuvillette in the eyes. “No matter what happens I will protect our family.”“I know you will Wrio.” Neuvillette kissed him softly. “You are our protector after all.”Neuvillette pressed another firm kiss to the other’s mouth, trying to portray as much love and faith in his partner’s abilities as he could. He knew Wriothesley would solve the case. He knew all would be okay. What he didn’t know at that time was how much they would actually end up losing. What he didn't know was the psychological warfare that was about to erupt back home. What he didn't know was the phantom of all of their pasts would reap which was theirs. What he didn't know was their lives would be forever changed by this new operation… change in ways operation: DOCTOR couldn't even imagine. As of the moment they would land in Fontaine, operation: REPLICATOR would be in full swing. It would shake the nation, police force and the family to their core. It would reshape the past, present and future for every single person involved. If they would have known… they would have savored their final fleeting moments in Sumeru. If they would have known… only if…
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
When the plane landed in Fontaine, tension and worry laid thick in the air. It was almost suffocating. Wriothesley, Clorinde, Chevreuse, Cyno and Tighnari went straight to the police station. They were officially on the clock and it was a race against time. Navia, Neuvillette, Sigewinne and Dehya went back to the house. Wriothesley had told everyone about the text message he received the night prior, contributing heavily to the tension. The other main contributor was a voice message left at the Chief’s desk. They were waiting to listen to it in full but the little they heard before they boarded the plane was disturbing.Navia carried a half asleep Sigewinne into the house as Dehya and Neuvillette wrangled in everyone's bags. She carried the little one to her room. The flight was very early and the vacation was very relaxing but tiring, especially for the busy 7 year old.“Hey Winne…” Navia whispered. “Why don't I put on a movie and you can rest okay? I’ll come get you when lunch is ready in a few hours.”“Mmm…” Sigewinne rubbed her eyes as she was placed into her bed. Navia tucked Sigewinne into bed and sat on the edge, trying to find something for her to watch. “Via can I ask a question?”“What's on your mind, Bun?” Navia smiled.“Something bad is happening isn't it?” Sigewinne asked softly.“Unfortunately yes…” Navia sighed. “That's why Aunt Dehya is with us and Uncle Cyno and Nari are here. But you don't need to worry about a single thing.” She kissed Sigewinne’s forehead. “Daddy and Cici won't let anything bad happen to any of us. They're gonna work hard to figure out what's going on.”Sigewinne gave a sleepy nod before smiling up at Navia. “Daddy and Cici will make sure we are ok. They’re super heroes…”Navia nodded in agreement before putting on a movie for Sigewinne. She settled into bed and drifted in and out of sleep shortly after. Navia kissed the top of her head before returning downstairs to check on Neuvillette and Dehya. They had loaded all the bags into the living room.“She tucked into bed?” Dehya asked as Navia came down. She nodded in confirmation. “So what can I do to help? Seriously… anything you guys need.”“It's okay to rest.” Neuvillette chuckled.“Not really the thing I'm into.” Dehya laughed. “Can I see the nursery?”Navia led her upstairs to the painted nursery. There were tons of boxes around the room, the furniture waiting to be put together. “We really shouldn't have put off all of this.” Navia sighed.“What building furniture?” Dehya raised a brow. “I'm gonna take a wild guess here and say that was supposed to be Wriothesley’s job?”“I, unfortunately, am not the best with my hands.” Neuvillette admitted, joining the girls upstairs.“Well, I can tell you right now that all three of us disagree with that.” Navia smirked, making the light haired man blush.“Not what I meant Via.” Neuvillette chuckled. “I unfortunately am not a builder. I wish I was but alas…”“Well where's your tools? I can have at least the rocking chair built by lunch.” Dehya offered. “Please… I insist. I do better with tasks than laying around relaxing.”“Let me go get them.” Neuvillette said before going back downstairs to the garage.“Thank you…” Dehya smiled warmly at Navia.“Whatever for?” Navia asked. “If anything we should be thanking you. After all, you left your home at the drop of a hat just to help us out. Literally risking your life to protect our family.”Dehya took Navia’s hands softly. “No Navia… Thank you for letting Candace and I be a part of your life. Texting us updates or letting me come here… keeping us in the loop. It means so much to us.”“Of course… Dehya you’re family.” Navia chuckled. “Literally one of my best friends. I am so thrilled to have you here with us… even if it's a really shitty situation to be in. I'm so happy you're one of our protectors.”“Still, it means so much to me. Let me help where I can. Building things, chores, cooking… whatever makes your guys life easier.” Dehya pulled her into a hug. “I wish I could have been there for Marina when she was pregnant with Sigewinne. I don't want to miss that with you and Carole.”“I'm here to say, Sigewinne is thrilled to have you around.” Navia said. “I promise… I am not pregnant enough to not do chores or cook or anything. But I greatly appreciate you helping out with the nursery. Wriothesley was supposed to build everything with Clorinde after we came back but this definitely was an unexpected turn.”“Don't worry, I got you.” Dehya smirked. Neuvillette came up the stairs with the small tool box and a bar stool from the kitchen for Navia to sit on.Dehya accepted the tool box and got to work on the rocking chair. Neuvillette handed her pieces as she needed them. The chair was built in less than an hour, Dehya immediately starting on the next project of the crib.“So… what are your guys' theories on what's going on?” Dehya asked.“To be honest… I have no idea.” Navia shrugged.“Based on what we know, which is bare details at this point, it could be anyone within the justice system. Anyone in the police force, special forces, district attorney, courts or advocacy center. It could be anyone they arrested who was recently released from custody. It's just… worrisome for me that Wriothesley seems to be the main target in all this.” Neuvillette sighed.“I think out of any of them, I'm least worried about them being after Wriothesley.” Dehya admitted. “From the moment I met the guy, I knew he was a fighter. A warrior if I was honest. He would be a fierce leader among the desert tribes. If anyone can take this, it's him.”“It's just not fair though.” Navia chimed in. “He's been through enough. More than enough… I wish he could just live his life and be him without constantly being on guard.”“Unfortunately, some of us are destined to fight most of our lives.” Dehya offered a sad smile. “And I can confirm, both siblings were destined to that life. As are myself, Candace and Cyno. There's nothing we can do about it besides fight and win every single time.”“We’ll get through this… together…” Neuvillette smiled. “We will be there for all three of them when they win.” While the others went home, Wriothesley, Clorinde, Chevreuse, Cyno and Tighnari arrived at the police station. There was so much to be done and such little time. Chevreuse, Cyno and Tighnari went straight to the archives to confirm all of the Doctor’s notes were scanned into the system so she could write the program. Confirming if those notes were new or leaked was essential. If they were leaked, it cut out a large portion of the suspect pool. If they were new, it made it a whole lot bigger and meant they most likely missed a member of the Doctor’s network. Clorinde and Wriothesley had a meeting with the Chief and Captain Letelle. Both men were waiting when they arrived at the office. Wriothesley took a seat with Clorinde right beside him. “So… what's the current status?” the captain of Cerberus asked the other captain.“I spoke with the boyfriend of the missing girl last night. They've been through it…” Letelle sighed. “I wish I would have recognized the signs sooner and called you guys on the case way sooner. This girl has been missing for 3 days already and with no pattern, I'm not sure if we are looking for a body or alive victim.”“What can you tell us about her?” Clorinde asked.“Victim is age 28. It was her boyfriend of 5 years reporting her missing. She is originally from Mondstandt but moved to Fontaine when she was a child. The disturbing part to me is that…” Letelle took a deep breath. “When she disappeared, it was the first time she had left the house in nearly two weeks. She had just miscarried their child. She was 20 weeks along.”“Shit… that's terrible.” Clorinde sighed. “And way too close to how far along Navia is for my comfort.”“Do you know her last known whereabouts?” Wriothesley asked.“The supermarket. My team is there now getting the security camera recordings and her vehicle towed. If there's any witnesses, they will find them.” Letelle confirmed. “You’ll be first to know when they return to the station and turn everything over to the crime scene investigation unit.”“What about the voicemail left this morning?” Clorinde inquired.“I believe you heard part of it this morning?” Chief asked. The others nodded. “Brace yourselves… I have no idea yet who made this message or how they got to my direct line. Cyber crimes is investigating into it now.”The Chief hit play on the answering machine. It was a staticy, distorted voice. It almost sounded like a child. “Roses are red, violets are blue… once there were three and now there are four! Does that make you nervous?” There was a long, sickening laugh. “Then four will turn into five. Then five to six. But one day, I will get my prize. Oh yes…” A deep, dreamy sigh. “There's one body I'd love to have to myself. Oh my dear, dear Captain Wriothesley. I’ll be with you soon my dear. I do hope I have your blessing Chief. So sincerely. I can't wait to get what I want… soon… SOON.” the receiver clicked, the phone call ending.“So it is me afterall.” Wriothesley groaned. “They have made 0 demands… is this simply psychological warfare?”“It seems like it is.” Chief admitted. “Captain Wriothesley I am hesitant to keep you leading this case.”“There's no one else who can catch this guy except Captain Wriothesley.” Clorinde put her foot down. “All of us have a very complicated past, especially his. And no one knows this team better than him.”“I do think there's a demand being made.” Letelle piped up. “The demand is Wriothesley. Plain and simple.”“Yeah well that's not a demand we can give into.” The Chief sighed. “If ANYTHING is discovered… I want to be the first to know.”All three officers saluted their Chief and headed out to their respective offices. Clorinde and Wriothesley began mapping out the final path of each of the first three victims and then the disappearance spot for the fourth. There was virtually no pattern. The only thing they had gathered was that there was a large comfort zone around the city. It only narrowed out the rural areas of Fontaine. The crime scene investigation team gave a report to Wriothesley that stated they were working on all sorts of DNA or evidence. The camera footage showed very little. It was a large van that pulled up behind the parked car with the victim getting out. When it pulled away, she was gone. No license plate. No photo for a mug shot. Only a black and white grainy image of a van.Clorinde and Wriothesley went down to the archives to help the others sort through boxes. They had only found a single notebook that wasn’t scanned in so far. The notebook had nothing to do with Marina’s experiment however. They still had over 40 boxes to go through.Hours upon hours passed filled with reading, coffee runs, and take out containers. By the time midnight rolled around, Chevreuse groaned loudly and flung back against the ground. She ran a hand over her face.“What's up Chev?” Wriothesley inquired.“Phantom eye pain from all this reading.” Chevreuse sighed.“I think it's time to call it a night.” Clorinde said softly.“I agree…” Cyno murmured from the corner. Tighnari was curled up asleep beside him, his tail curled around his hip and using Cyno’s thigh as a pillow. They packed up shop for the night… they would be back in the morning anyway to finish up where they left off with the remaining boxes. As expected, the house was dark when they arrived back. Chevreuse instantly collapsed on the couch, exhausted from reading so much that day and going over evidence. Dehya was long asleep on the other couch, barely groaning an acknowledgement the others got home safely. Cyno and Tighnari slipped out to the back of the house, having a small area set up for them earlier that day courtesy of Dehya and Neuvillette. Their combined efforts moved some of Sigewinne’s toys back upstairs, moved a mattress from storage into the area and curtains hung for some sort of privacy/protection from the sun in the sunroom.Clorinde went into their bedroom while Wriothesley slowly creaked Sigewinne’s room open. He saw her fast asleep, clutching onto her favorite bunny plushies. Wriothesley smiled warmly at his sleeping daughter. As much as he wanted to go tuck her in or tell her he's home safe, he silently clicked the door shut and joined Clorinde in their bedroom.Neuvillette had woken up when Clorinde had entered, greeting Wriothesley when he joined them. Navia remained asleep, being a heavy sleeper by nature and extremely exhausted lately. Wriothesley barely even took off what he was wearing, opting to sleep in his boxers. Clorinde wasn't fairing much better, barely throwing on a tshirt and panties.“Rough day huh?” Neuvillette smiled tiredly.“Rough isn't the word I'd use.” Clorinde mumbled as she spooned Navia from behind.“More like… draining. No new leads. Read a whole lot of fucked up shit from the Doctor. Only dead ends and disturbing information.” Wriothesley yawned as he curled up against Neuvillette.“Would it be beneficial if I joined you tomorrow to read through documents or to help in any way?” Neuvillette asked, running a hand through Wriothesley’s hair.“‘Fraid not sweetness…” Wriothesley slurred tiredly. “You rest up here and take care of Navia and Sige…”“I think you need rest more than I.” Neuvillette whispered as he kissed his husband's forehead. He made a hum of acknowledgment before drifting asleep. When the sun came up, none of the officers wanted to rise from their beds. The beds were warm and safe and provided the land of sleep. Outside of the beds was cold and harsh and required reading more demented shit the Doctor wrote about. Being thorough with the notes was what was killing them right now. Wriothesley preferred the measure twice, cut once method so they were reading through a majority of the notes to confirm it wasn't what they were looking for and the program would be set up to confirm it through the digital archives… just in case there was an error.By 10am, they were back in the police station in the basements. The archive was located underneath the offices, connecting to the nearby morgue. It was cooler down there with no windows. The silence was eerie. Especially with the nature of the notes they were reading through. The team of 5 tackled the final remains of the boxes. It took the entirety of the day but it was confirmed when Chevreuse ran the program checking the digital files. The notes being left with the victims were not any part of the Doctor’s case. They were brand new. That meant the suspect pool got even larger and they missed someone in the network. This time however, Marina wasn't around to lead them directly to the answer.Cyno reached out to check and see if Candace’s team had made any sort of progress. They were still hiking through the desert, approaching the wastelands. The officer’s decided to come back the next day with fresh eyes. It wouldn't do them any good speculating when they were tired. Chevreuse was still struggling with phantom eye pain. She wasn't sure if it was from all the reading or the fact it usually gave her some issue when she thought long and hard about the Doctor’s case. They got home earlier than the night prior, arriving back shortly after 8pm. Navia offered to cook them some dinner before they all passed out, the group gladly accepting. They were pushing themselves hard but it was required of a case like this. After all, life hung in the balance. But burn out was rapidly setting in as well as frustration.Sigewinne had practically begged Wriothesley to read a story to her before bed. He accepted without hesitation. While exhausted, he always had time for Sigewinne. She had picked out a fantasy novel about dragons to be read to her. Wriothesley tucked her into bed, sitting on the edge and getting comfortable to read to her.Downstairs, Clorinde was helping Navia clean up the kitchen while Cyno and Tighnari were showering. Neuvillette sat at the counter, chatting with the girls while reading over a case file for a court case coming up. Dehya was in the living room folding some laundry with Chevreuse asleep on the couch nearby.Wriothesley’s phone started ringing on the counter near Neuvillette. Seeing it was the Chief, he knew it was important. However it was getting late and the detectives had only been home for a few hours. He passed the phone over to Clorinde nearby.“Good evening sir.” She said softly. “Apologies, Wriothesley is upstairs reading to Sigewinne. Do you want me to go get him or pass along a message?”“I'm sorry to do this, Clorinde, I truly am.” The Chief’s voice was tight, strained even. “But I need you guys back in… we have a body.”“It's her isn't it?” Clorinde asked, already knowing the answer.“Yes… it is the missing girl.” The Chief practically whispered.“Alright. We will head out shortly. Do you need us in the office or crime scene? Only team Cerberus or our diplomats as well?” Clorinde asked.“Crime scene. It is up to you guys who go but… someone needs to see the crime scene before it's only in photographs. He's upping the ante. This isn't just a crime scene, this is a performance for whoever this is. I'm speculating here but I believe he killed this girl shortly after that taunting message was left. No new missing person reports as of now.” Chief replied.“It will be simply Wriothesley and I then.” Clorinde said. “Please send us the location and we will be there as soon as Sigewinne is asleep.”Clorinde hung up the phone and when the location of the scene came through, she practically flew up the stairs. She took a deep breath outside of the door before calmly entering. Sigewinne didn't need to see the freak out on her face.Wriothesley looked up from the book. Sigewinne was mostly asleep, only opening her eyes slightly when Clorinde entered then cuddled right back into her plushie. Based on her facial expression alone, Wriothesley knew what was wrong. He slipped a bookmark in the page and kissed the top of Sigewinne’s head. The lamp was clicked off and they quietly left the room. Clorinde pulled him into their bedroom and closed the door.“Wrio.” Clorinde’s voice was laced with hurt. “The missing girl's body was just found.”“Fuck…” Wriothesley ran a hand through his hair. “We didn't make it in time… shit…”“Wriothesley.” Clorinde’s voice alone snapped him out of his thoughts. “The body was found in the sunflower field outside of town.”Wriothesley’s eyes darkened. Not many people outside the family knew that spot's meaning. It was where Clorinde had proposed to Navia and the location where Neuvillette and Wriothesley got married. It was all done privately. It represented a very happy place for team Cerberus and finding a murder victim who looked exactly like Navia was a clear message of torment.Clorinde and Wriothesley threw on the base of their uniforms before driving out to the location of the crime scene. When they arrived, Clorinde realized what the Chief meant by upping the ante. The crime scene was staged to look like a wedding. A large backdrop by the altar. Rose petals along a sheer fabric trail. A set of 10 chairs lining the altar. Where a priest would normally stand laid the victim. Her hands were crossed over her chest. Underneath her hands was a leaflet of paper like the others. She was identical to Navia. Her signature curly blonde hair, a yellow sun dress that Clorinde wasn't fully convinced it wasn't pulled directly from Navia’s closet, and was surrounded by yellow rose petals instead of the red that was the rest of the scene. The victim had small cuts all down her thighs and arms. They almost replicated self harm marks that Navia had scarred on her body. The Chief approached Wriothesley and Clorinde as they finished speaking to a crime scene tech. He looked as tired as the others. This situation was grim. The only good thing right now was there was no new missing person reported. Could the killer be taking a break?“Did you call Emilie in yet?” Wriothesley asked.“Yes, she's currently setting up the autopsy room. She said to meet her Tuesday at noon for her full report. That was the fastest she can do.” Chief confirmed.“That’ll be fine… She's basically going to have to work the next 48 hours to get that result anyway.” Clorinde sighed.“How many people were at your wedding? Who knew about it and the proposal?” Chief asked.“Only 6 people were at the wedding… Myself, Neuvillette, Navia, Clorinde, Chevreuse and Charlotte. We posted pictures on social media and we have photos at our desks. It's not a secret per say. Just… a quiet location.” Wriothesley admitted.“The only ones who knew I proposed to Navia here are the same people really.” Clorinde said. “But this is definitely a startling wake up call.”“Crime scene investigation techs will wrap up everything we need here. You have a meeting scheduled with the coroner and if she gets results faster she will let you know.” Chief motioned towards their car. “Go home and get some sleep. I’ll make sure the entire file is in your email by the morning. Do you have a plan for tomorrow?”“Going through the Doctor’s network and seeing where we could have possibly missed someone. Then possibly talking to the district attorney if I have enough evidence to get background checks done on everyone who ever even looked at the case.” Wriothesley explained. The Chief nodded in approval and sent the couple off. It was late and they had already worked a full day. Yes, they needed to work hard on what was going on and to solve the case. But they would also miss evidence and not be on top of their game if they were exhausted. They returned home to a quiet house and crawled into bed with their partners. Sleep hit them instantly. Morning would come early anyhow. The team returned to the office the next morning, being joined by Cyno. Tighnari opted to stay home to spend time with Sigewinne, Navia, Neuvillette and Dehya. They pulled up all the boxes of arrests and evidence from the Doctors case and a clean white board. They spent the day rebuilding the network to see where they possibly even missed. Thankfully, the Doctor kept very detailed records of everyone that ever worked for him.Piece by piece, file by file. They built the network back from scratch. They weren't 100% sure it was a missing person within the network, but the fact the Doctor’s notes from Marina was worth rebuilding and looking into the network. The district attorney agreed that they had enough to pull background checks on everyone involved in the case. The warrant would be signed the next morning when the judge arrived. For today, they just worked on the list of everyone to pull. They went home at a decent time, listening to the Chief’s advice to take a little time to rest. They had dinner as a family for the first time since they returned from Sumeru. It was back to reality for everyone the next day. Neuvillette had trials to prepare for. Navia had appointments filling her day, interviews needing to be done. Dehya and Tighnari would join them at the office after they drop Sigewinne off at school. Cyno would be joining team Cerberus every day from here on out.“We meet with Emilie on Tuesday… She already asked to move the meeting from noon to 10 am so I'm hoping she has some answers for us.” Wriothesley said.“Oh shoot that reminds me.” Navia ran a hand down her face. “I have an appointment on Wednesday morning.”“I will not be able to attend… we have a lot to do to prepare for nobleman Raphael’s trial.” Neuvillette said with sad eyes.“Would… would I be able to?” Tighnari asked, ears pinned back a bit embarrassed.“Would you like to go?” Navia smiled warmly at her friend. “We’d have to go directly after dropping Winne off at school.”“I'd love it more than anything.” Tighnari smiled.“Send us any news… we will likely be interviewing someone or talking evidence over.” Clorinde asked Tighnari.“Of course I will.” Tighnari was just thrilled to be able to help his friend out. He knew how much Navia loved Carole already and how desperately she wanted to maintain a healthy pregnancy. And with everything going on with her partner’s, it wasn't the easiest task to maintain her stress and keep it low. Especially when a random stranger looking exactly like her was murdered in the place her partners got married in and she was proposed to. Tuesday arrived and Emilie had called team Cerberus down to the morgue for the report. She had worked endlessly, collecting as much evidence as she possibly could and gathering every detail she could from the body she was autopsying. She was waiting outside of her office when Wriothesley and his team arrived.“Thanks for making this a top priority Emilie.” Wriothesley greeted.“What do you got for us, Doc?” Chevreuse asked.“Please… come inside.” Emilie held the door open to her office. “Honestly, if this case wasn't already in your guys hands, I would be demanding the Chief to get this to you ASAP.”The four piled into the office and Emilie handed Wriothesley a file. The captain flipped through it with a confused look. He handed it down to Cyno who shared the same confused expression.“I assure you my findings are correct.” Emilie closed her eyes. “The poor girl.”“So what levels were in her system? Can you tell the drug was?” Wriothesley asked.“Cause of death was drug overdose. The dose in her blood stream was triple the lethal dose. Based on the marks i found they were injected intravenously. Lab results proved the drug was sinthe.” Emilie reported.“So they know a lot about us, but not fine details. At least in this situation. Maybe they know the least about Navia?” Clorinde added.“I'm assuming based on the prior victims and this one, Navia at some point made an attempt on her life?” Emilie asked.“She did in high school after her father died. But it wasn't… that. Please keep this confidential but she took all of her anxiety meds. She immediately threw them up, her body's natural response, and called me. She went to therapy and turned out okay after some medicine switched up. She has NEVER touched a hard drug. I'm unsure if the culprit did it on purpose or if it is a hint towards something else.” Clorinde sighed.“Hold on… we had a sinthe case recently didn't we?” Chevreuse asked.“It was the one with nobleman Raphael and Pierre.” Wriothesley closed his eyes in thought. “That case goes to trial soon too. And we never caught the sinthe dealer.”“The sad man.” Clorinde groaned.“We’ll have to pull that case from the archive before we head upstairs.” Chevreuse said. “We’ll add it to the board with the Doctor’s network. We always felt drugs were involved in his network… maybe the sad man is the part we are missing all along.”“We need to bring up Marina’s personal journals too.” Cyno added.“Clorinde, text Dehya to see if we can get the two at the house too. We will look into it further when we are home tonight.” Wriothesley asked. “What else do you have for us Doc?”“Same as usual… hair dye and styling post modem. Cuts along her arms and thighs were antemortem. And as you saw…” Emilie turned away, looking through the glass window of her office into the morgue. “She had a full hysterectomy performed on her postmortem.”“Can we ask your opinion on how you feel about this case Doctor Emilie?” Cyno asked. “You've seen all four victims, been in this longer than any of us have. And your insight is invaluable to us right now.”“I think you're looking for someone who has been troubled their whole life. There's no remorse in any of these killings. They’re bold… they’re likely strong. The lightest victim was the first one and even she was over 130 pounds. The heaviest was the third being a 260 pound male. There's too much control over the victims. If you're looking for a pair, one is definitely a silent partner. My money would be on a single male perpetrator.” Emilie said. “My opinion is they are likely a closested male who likely saw you in your past and wanted our dear captain Wriothesley either romantically or physically or both.”“Shit that could go all the way back to my prison time.” Wriothesley sighed.“If anything else comes up, please alert us immediately.” Clorinde said. “We have a lot of work to do with this information.”They thanked Emilie for her time and hard work. They went to the archives to pick up the needed boxes of evidence to take to their office. Cyno stopped them at the door.“I need to know where your guys' heads are at.” Cyno said. “This is a lot. No doubt about it.”“My head is worried about Navia.” Clorinde admitted. “I feel as if this victim was chosen to provoke that response.”“What's running through my mind right now is Navia needs to be with someone at all times. Based on what our current theories are, I do feel as if Sigewinne is safe from being a target. I am not withdrawing the police presence from her school. But if this is someone who is connected to the Doctor, she is safe.” Wriothesley said.“I do agree with Wriothesley. The network had a great respect for Marina and wouldn't dare go after Sigewinne. From what we know, Dottore conditioned his employees to basically be at her beck and call and never to disrespect her.” Chevreuse observed.“I agree with the fact that Navia needs an escort at all times. The fact the victim had miscarried her child prior then a total removal of her reproductive organs is too close to home. Especially since it is the child Wriothesley fathered. If it is alright with you, I think Dehya will be ideal to stay by Navia’s side. Nari is strong yes but Dehya is a child of the desert like myself. She knows how to fight if it comes down to it. Nari will stay with Neuvillette when needed or go to Sigewinne.” Cyno suggested.“That sounds fine to me.” Clorinde agreed.“As long as everyone is protected I'm good with whatever.” Wriothesley said. “I think I may petition the Chief if we can bring home at least one of our service weapons.”“I think it would be wise. Especially Clorinde’s pistol. That would be the best fit.” Cyno added. They stacked the needed boxes into Wriothesley’s arms and headed up the stairs to the main lobby. It sounded… panicked. Chaotic. Emotional. There was a lot of commotion. Shouting. Commands. Something was definitely wrong. Something terrible was happening.“Cyber crimes hurry up-” It sounded like the Chief was yelling. It was a tone the elder officer never used. “Where the hell is Chevreuse?! We need her and need to get Wriothesley out!”“Chief, what's going on?” Chevreuse called calmly as she exited the stairs. The rest of the team was right behind her.“Chevreuse we are getting hacked and we need you. Where is your captain- FUCK.” Chief didn't move fast enough when Wriothesley turned the corner. His whole world went still. The edges of it went black. His heart was in his throat. It felt like a mix of it beating so fast it may explode and not beating fast enough to push the blood through his body. He didn't even realize he dropped the stack of boxes on the floor. The police station was under a cyber attack. A hacker of sorts had taken over the entirety of the network. On every screen, a horrendous video was playing from the dark web. A video that they all had thought was long deleted. On every computer, tablet and television connected to the network played a video from Wriothesley’s childhood. Chevreuse had personally made sure his parents' snuff room was taken off the web when they first were in the academy… he knew this video shouldn't be appearing and yet here it was.Officers were gasping at the scene unfolding. They did their best to avert their eyes or cover their ears but it was so loud. They couldn't avoid it. No one should have been subjected to watching it.“Mama, I'm sorry!” A small Wriothesley cried. “I’ll be good, I’ll be good, I’ll be good!” He pleaded and pleaded with a woman behind him. He was tied down onto a table, partially nude. He was barely 9 years old. Locked in the hidden area of the basement where his parents filmed videos. He couldn't even remember what he did to upset his mom but it had been something to enrage her. She took it out in that particular video… his most popular video among his parents' clients. It was one filled with slaps, cigarette burns and the worst burn he had ever experienced… a sugar based hot wax poured along his tail bone onto his buttocks.Wriothesley bolted out the nearest door, the one to the center courtyard the cops use for lunch breaks. He needed air. He needed out. He needed to hide away. Every single member of the police force had just seen him being abused by his parents. Abused wasn't the right word… tortured was. How could he save his reputation from this?“Cyno, get everyone to the main lobby and lock all doors. No one can leave at this time. If there's a video playing, unplug it or break whatever screen it is. Its heavy duty glass, should be soundproof.” Clorinde commanded.“You heard the Dualist, everyone OUT INTO THE LOBBY! Unless you are helping Chevreuse get our server back, get out!” The Chief’s voice boomed above the video volume and the chatter. His voice broke the spell and everyone piled into the relatively small lobby. The receptionist had already unplugged everything out there, acting out of survival instincts when the videos started. Clorinde went outside to the courtyard with Wriothesley. She had barely caught him as he collapsed in a corner. She hauled him over to a bench. He was breathing erratically. His eyes had a shell shock stare. His entire body was shaking. He was deep into a PTSD flashback, likely reliving what he went through on that video. All Clorinde could do is talk to him, try and pull him out.Chief, Chevreuse and 3 members of the cyber crimes team took the charge at their respective computers. They were determined to get their network back safely and recover any lost data. Chevreuse was focused on following the trail of whoever did this. They were good… she helped build the firewalls and safety systems within the special forces’ network. And yet… they had so many VPNs running she couldn't even trace what nation it was coming from.“Chief!” A deep voice called from down the hallway. Arriving from the district attorney’s wing were Neuvillette and Tighnari. The Valuka Shuna had his ears pinned flat against his head. He had exceptional hearing from his genetic modifications and the sound of his friend crying in pain was rattling him. Neuvillette was right behind him, looking furious and worried at the same time.“Nari, I need you to do something.” Chevreuse called for him in a calm voice. She pulled her headphones from off her neck and handed them over. “Put these on, they are noise cancelling. I need you to go through and unplug ALL technology. If you can't turn it off, break it.”“Is this going on in the district attorney’s office too?” Chief asked, slightly flabbergasted.“Yes. Her Justice has already evacuated everyone to the courthouse across the park, it is not over there.” Neuvillette reported. “Where is my husband? How the HELL did someone get this video and how long until I can push the death penalty in the case?”“Slow down there, Neuvillette.” Chief grunted. “We have no idea who this is but it is likely the replicator. Chevreuse herself said this video should be gone so we have no idea.”“Whoever it is, they’re extremely fucking talented and should be recruited as a member of our team if they weren’t a evil bastard.” One of the members of the cyber crimes team said. “This level of hiding and this level of take over is hostile. I think the only person I've ever met who could do such a thing is Chevreuse. This person is dangerous…”“Neuvi! Nari!” Navia panted, running from the advocacy center. Tears were streaming down her face. Dehya was hot on her trail.“We have all parties in the advocacy center pooled into Navia’s interview room. Soundproof with no screens. The children didn't see anything.” Dehya reported.“Dehya, can you please double check the whole building including the basement? I need to make sure all people are in one of the three meeting areas.” Chief requested.“Got you boss.” Dehya nodded and set off. Tighnari got to work handling the screens needing to be turned off.“Where?!” Navia called out in between her huffs. “Where is Wriothesley?!”“He's outside in the courtyard. Clorinde is with him.” Chevreuse said. “Go, get out, you guys don't need to hear your partner like this.”Even as screens shut off, the haunting image of Wriothesley being tortured by the person who was supposed to nurture him remained. It ripped Navia’s chest open. Neuvillette bit the inside of his cheek to prevent the tears. He had never seen any image of Wriothesley’s family, or his husband at that age. This wasn't how he should have seen it for the first time. His husband should have never been forced to see his past like that again. Neuvillette knew that was one of the scars Wriothesley couldn't stand seeing and now he understood why.Neuvillette grabbed Navia’s hand and pushed the door to the courtyard open. Out there, Wriothesley’s head was in his lap, hand covering his face. He was shaking and crying softly. Clorinde held onto him, trying to talk him down from the flashback.Neuvillette rushed over and wrapped himself around Wriothesley’s other side, doing the same as Clorinde. It had been so long since he had an episode like this. They had never witnessed one so severe at that. Their normal comfort tactics simply weren't working this time. Wriothesley just sobbed into his lap and shook.“I… I have an idea.” Navia said gently. She pulled a chair from a table nearby and sat in front of Wriothesley. She gently pried Wriothesley’s hand from his face. It took some coercing, some patience but eventually his hand left his face. His eyes were glassy, like he wasn't even in his mind right now. Slowly, she pulled his hand closer to her and pressed his palm flat against her round belly. She adjusted it a few times before settling on a place.Wriothesley felt every sensation from that day. He heard the boiling wax nearby. Smelled the musty, old basement that he was in. He could taste the blood in his mouth from the hard slap his mother gave him from crying too much. He could feel his skin on his behind burning, a scar he would forever have. But worse… he saw the pleasure on his parents face as he was used. Tortured for a profit. Tortured because they simply could.Reality hit him like a brick when he felt something softly brush against his hand. He knew the sensation… one he has become so fond of feeling. His head snapped up and looked in front of him. His hand was against Navia’s belly and he had felt Carole’s kick against his hand.“Welcome back, love.” Navia smiled warmly, eyes bright with tears.Clorinde and Neuvillette sighed in relief and squeezed Wriothesley tight. They whispered their own welcome backs and sobbed onto the other man’s shoulder. Wriothesley’s eyes cleared as he came back to reality.“I…” Wriothesley’s voice died in his throat a few times. “I cannot believe this is happening… did… the entire police force see me being tortured as a kid?”“Unfortunately… so did the advocacy center and the district attorney.” Clorinde mumbled.“Did they catch him?” Wriothesley asked.“Chevreuse is chasing him down as we speak. Don’t worry, our friends are taking care of the situation and we aren't going anywhere.” Neuvillette promised, brushing Wriothesley’s hair out of his face.“I just…” Wriothesley chuckled sadly. “I can't believe this is happening…How do I come back from this?”The couples sat outside talking for a long time, trying their best to comfort Wriothesley. However, nothing could take away the pain they all felt in that moment. The Replicator was out for more than blood… he wanted everything the family had to offer. Mind, body and soul. The Chief came outside what felt like an eternity later. He offered a troubled but sad smile to them as he approached. He pulled up another chair next to Navia.“The network is back in our hands.” The Chief started. “Chevreuse said that there's a lot of missing data but cyber crimes and tech are currently pulling the back ups. Chevreuse is hunting down whoever did this.”“What time is it?” Navia just realized. “We need to pick up Sigewinne!”“No need…” Chief smiled. “Dehya headed there a little while ago. She's probably back at the house already. Cyno and Tighnari offered to stay with Chevreuse and help with the clean up of this mess. You all need to head home.” He handed Clorinde over two sets of car keys. They went out the side exit, usually only meant for emergencies. But Wriothesley couldn't walk through the police station at this time. He felt raw… broken. A way he hasn't felt in years. He felt slightly guilty for letting this have such a big effect on him. It was exactly what the Replicator wanted. But out of all the videos his parents made of him being tortured or assaulted, it had to be that one. The realization was also beginning to hit him that this is how Navia and Neuvillette had seen him for the first time as a child. When they arrived home, Dehya kept Sigewinne distracted in her downstairs play area. Being who she was, Sigewinne already had an idea that something was very, very wrong but let it be until later. The family hauled Wriothesley up to their room. He needed to relax and from experience, they knew it was better when he was in a safe space of his and this was a very familiar one to him. When they entered the room, Wriothesley went over to the large walk in closet and grabbed a box from the farthest corner. It was small and metal, like a fire proof safe. He sat on the edge of the bed and opened it.“I guess I shoulda done this long before now…” Wriothesley admitted. “But I didn’t… fuck…” He looked away, tears being forced back. “I didn't want you guys to have a different picture of me… a new perception.”“Wrio, it's okay.” Clorinde sat beside him and took his hand. “They won't. You aren't a kid anymore. You're our partner and let's be honest here… they saw much worse today then they're gonna see in that box.”With her encouragement, Wriothesley handed a small stack of photos to Navia and Neuvillette to shuffle through. Some were him as a child, some of Marina growing up, some even featured Clorinde as a young child. They appeared happy but it felt… superficial. The smiles felt forced, ungenuine. It became apparent in the last photo they viewed… a family portrait.“Wriothesley…” Navia’s eyes softened. “You were the cutest kid…”“You can say it.” Wriothesley said, a little smaller than his voice usually is. “I am the identical copy of my dad. I know I am.”“It's…” Neuvillette failed to find the words. “A strong family resemblance. I wouldn't say identical. You have a much kinder smile and softer eyes than he does.”“You and Marina coulda been twins if she wasn’t so much taller than you.” Navia joked.“Wriothesley was the runt up until age 14.” Clorinde smirked.“Yeah I hit puberty and was prison strong.” Wriothesley rolled his eyes.“I simply don't understand how parents could be so cruel to such innocent children…” Neuvillette murmured, the words falling from his mouth but were meant to be an internal dialogue.“Welma and Montgomery.” Wriothesley said flatly. “Parents of Marina and Wriothesley. Buried in a potter’s field after they were brutally murdered by their own flesh and blood.”“It was a long time ago, Wriothesley. You've more than repaid your sins.” Clorinde reassured. The man nodded numbly. He continued answering his partners questions until he was too tired to continue. Clorinde first woke up when she felt the bed shift drastically. Someone had left their nest. Maybe it was just Navia going to the bathroom again. Or Neuvillette getting a drink of water. She waited patiently for them to return but when no one did, she sat up to investigate. The person missing from bed was Wriothesley, the other two remaining fast asleep beside her.Silently, she crept out of bed and down the hallway in search of Wriothesley. When he was nowhere to be found on the second floor, she went downstairs in her search. The study door was closed. That door usually remained open at all times unless they were actively going over a case, which they have not done in that room in over four years since they brought Sigewinne home.Carefully, she opened the door and peaked in. Wriothesley was sitting at his desk, swiveling side to side slightly in his chair. He stared intently at a photo in his hand. He didn't even know Clorinde came into the room until she spoke.“It's been a while since this has happened.” She said softly. She approached the sitting man cautiously, not knowing if he was having an anxiety attack, a mental spiral or an insomnia spell.“Just… couldn't lay there anymore.” Wriothesley admitted. “Kept thinking about today.”“That's reasonable. Today was a lot. Between our meeting with Emilie and what happened… you should probably take tomorrow off.” Clorinde said.“No.” He said firmly. “We have a bad guy to catch. We need to put a stop to him as soon as we can. I don't want this carrying into our personal lives anymore than it has.”“These things happen, Wrio. Yes… it sucks. Yes, that was a really shitty time and place to relive those memories but I can assure you, not a single officer, attorney or advocate will think differently of you.” Clorinde gently took a hold of his face, forcing him to look at her. “Because by god, you are a strong man. A man they all should aspire to be like.”“Thanks Rinde…” Wriothesley said halfheartedly. “It’ll be… different.” He looked back down at the picture in his hand. A photo of a young Wriothesley, Clorinde and Marina. “I think back on it more than you think… What would've happened to all of us if Rina and I didn’t have abusive parents? Would all of us be where we are now? Would we have this family?”“I think fate would have brought us together at one point or another.” Clorinde reassured. “Wrio… There's something I need to say. I said it to you earlier but you were so deep into an episode I don’t think it was heard.”“I'm all ears, sweetness.” Wriothesley leaned his cheek into her hand, giving her his full attention.“I'm so proud of you.” Clorinde smiled. “I can remember back to when we met. I chased a bully away from you who was picking on you from your burn marks on your arm. You clung to me ever since.” Wriothesley chuckled fondly at the memory. “From being a small bullied kid to a shy, anxious teenager to a man who leads the entire police force of Fontaine by example. Wrio you should be every single person's hero. You started from nothing… fuck you started half buried in the ground and yet you let NOTHING stop you. You are a special forces captain leading the most elite team in Fontaine. You are a husband and loving partner to not one, not two but three of us and you make sure every single one of us knows how much you love us. You are a father to our perfect daughter and soon to be our second perfect daughter. You are a great friend to so many.” She brushed a lock of his hair out of his face and behind his ear. “You do not give yourself enough credit. Be kinder to yourself.”“All of that feels like a lifetime ago.” Wriothesley laughed. “Thank you Clorinde… for always being there for me. You always know what to say.”“I have nowhere I'd rather be than by your side.” Clorinde smirked. “And Navia’s. And Neuvillette’s. Archons I have no idea when all of our relationships blurred together but it's just so right. What's better than having a bombshell wife and two handsome boyfriends?”“At some point, we gotta upgrade from boyfriend status.” Wriothesley teased. “I mean we all have kids together now, we all are married to each other just separately per the law.”“I think that can be discussed.” Clorinde retorted. “But for now, we should really go back to bed before Navia wakes up and realizes both of us are gone. Poor thing will get worried and cry and wake Neuvillette up.”“I should bring her home flowers tomorrow. I gave her so much of my anxiety when I put that baby in her.” Wriothesley joked.“You should. Or bring her cake she will lovingly accept both.” Clorinde pulled Wriothesley up from the chair he was sitting in, setting the photo in his hand on the desk. Before she could pull the door handle to open it, Wriothesley spun Clorinde around so they were chest to chest. He tilted her chin up and pressed a loving kiss on her lips. A small gasp escaped her as she leaned closer to Wriothesley. Her arms looped around his neck. He pulled their hips flush together. Wriothesley tilted his head, a better angle to deepen the kiss. The next thing Clorinde knew, her back was pressed against the door. Wriothesley hiked one of her legs up, supporting her as she wrapped her legs around his hips.Wriothesley ground his hips into hers teasingly. He bit down slightly on her lower lip. Clorinde moaned in the kiss, giving Wriothesley an opportunity to slip his tongue into her mouth. Slow and teasing strokes, soft and steady. It was like they had all the time in the world. Clorinde’s hand feathered through Wriothesley’s hair, pressing him closer to her. She bucked her hips against his.One hand went to Wriothesley’s shoulder. The other dipped low between them, grabbing at Wriothesley’s cock. He let out a soft groan before pulling away from the kiss. They both gasped, trying to suck in oxygen they were denied.“Fuck… thats embarrassing…” Wriothesley mumbled under his breath.“It's okay Wrio…” Clorinde panted. She let go of his soft cock and placed it on his other shoulder. “We haven't exactly had a relaxing week nor a relaxing day. Your body is tired and stressed.”“Can I make it up to you, beautiful? When this is over?” Wriothesley offered.“I’ll hold you to it.” She kissed his cheek softly. “Plus it would be unfortunate if Sigewinne woke up and heard us.”“Good point.” Wriothesley sighed. He set Clorinde back on the floor. Back upstairs to bed they went. The next day, Cyno, Clorinde and Wriothesley arrived at the office a few hours after Chevreuse. Chevreuse came in early to check on how progress on finding the hacker was coming. Tech and cyber crimes took shifts throughout the night to continue tracking him down, it was her time to take over. The others added to the Doctor’s network, trying to place the drug dealer ring and explore that angle. It had to be somewhere in the other case or the other journals.A little before noon, Navia poked her head into the Cerberus office before waltzing in. She carried take out containers into the office. Tighnari was right behind her carrying coffees.“Hello my loves!” She chirped happily. “We brought lunch! Neuvi and Dehya should be coming down here soon!”“Baby, are you sure you wanna eat lunch in here?” Clorinde asked, concerned. She motioned to the large board filled with crime scene photos behind her. “We kinda have some… unsavory photos up right now.”“I had a child tell me yesterday all the things their uncle promised to do to their own mother if they ever came forward with the abuse they were receiving. A dead body doesn't freak me out, the living does.” Navia countered.“I sometimes forget that out of the four, Navia has the most disturbing job.” Cyno commented.“But it does good things. Brings sick people to justice.” Tighnari pointed out.“And the captain of the special forces division: child crimes adores me.” Navia added. “Chrissy is a wonderful cop who shows no person mercy.”“Chrissy is a great captain, honestly the reason you two get along so well is youre the same person in different fonts.” Wriothesley said, snatching his cup of tea from Tighnari. “How did the appointment go, sweetness?”“Hold on! Let's wait for Neuvi and Dehya!” Navia huffed.Chevreuse requested her food as she monitored her program, trying to untangle the web of trails left behind. The others talked for a short time before Neuvillette and Dehya finally appeared. They apologized for their tardiness, getting caught up with a conversation with Her Justice, the district attorney herself, Evangeline.“So, the appointment went great.” Navia smiled happily as everyone finally began eating their lunch. “She's healthy, has a strong heartbeat and is the perfect size for 24 weeks! Well, almost 25 now.”“That's wonderful! Did you bring photos?” Neuvillette asked. Navia passed him the ultrasound photos from her purse.“Thank you for letting me tag along.” Tighnari said shyly. “I also am sorry if I freaked out the staff.” Cyno raised a brow at that comment. “They weren't really prepared to see a fox man.”“To be fair Nari, I'm pretty sure half of them just wanted to see if your tail was as soft as it looks.” Navia smiled.“It is as soft as it looks.” Cyno smirked while Tighnari’s face turned red.“So what's going on with all this? Rebuilding the network?” Dehya asked, gesturing to the board filled with information on the Doctor and the network.“We’re trying to figure out if we missed a drug ring somewhere in the network. We can't find any information on if we arrested anyone in the drug ring or what's going on. We think it has something to do with another case involving a mysterious drug dealer nicknamed ‘the sad man’.” Clorinde explained.“You guys arrested two major drug rings in the Doctor’s case.” Dehya raised a brow. “Remember? The arrests were made while you all were in Sumeru while we got Tighnari back. Alhaitham read and documented those notes when you were in the hospital.” Dehya paused. “Also I thought you guys caught ‘the sad man’?”“No, we caught the other two players, nobleman Raphael and Pierre, their trial should be like… next week.” Wriothesley said, Neuvillette confirming.“We didn't see anything about the drug rings in our archive or our system.” Chevreuse raised a brow. “We confirmed all but a few files were scanned in and those had nothing to do with the drug ring.”“Maybe we missed something… I'll call Alhaitham in a while. Based on the time, he's in a meeting currently.” Cyno hummed in thought. “If anyone can remember, it's him.”“Uhhhhh… Wriothesley…” Chevreuse raised her hands from the keyboard. Her expression was startled. “I have a location.”“That was faster than expected.” Clorinde commented.“Yeah because I didn't track him. He basically gave up his location.” Chevreuse’s eyebrows knotted together.“We’re going straight into a trap aren't we?” Wriothesley asked.“We definitely are.” Chevreuse confirmed. “It's… the old warehouse we arrested Vacher in too. What a welcome…”“Okay, here's the plan.” Wriothesley started. “We go in solo with crime labs and uniforms nearby in case. Bring weapons as we aren't sure what's going to happen inside. Chev, you’ll be on ground scoping this time in case. Just… gut feeling. Cyno, are you good with lead? You're the lightest on your feet.”“Consider it done.” Cyno confirmed.“Great. Chev will be at your back followed by Rinde and I'll bring up the rear. We go in precautionary, slow and steady and stealthy. I'll let the Chief know while you all gear up.” Wriothesley explained, followed by a ‘yes sir’ from the rest of the team.Clorinde, Cyno and Wriothesley said goodbye to their partners and friends. When everyone left the Cerberus office, Navia and Neuvillette watched their partners walk away. “I feel… wrong about this.” Navia practically whispered.“It will be ok, dear.” Neuvillette reassured. “And do not worry… we still have our friends with us.” He motioned towards Dehya and Tighnari waiting for them nearby. The warehouse was worn by time. This particular unit hadn’t been used up until recently. Purchased in cash approximately a month ago per the owner. It was dark inside, the only window blacked out. They chose to breach via the side entrance, picking the lock instead of breaking the door in.Cyno went first, Chevreuse using her scope to confirm it was safe up ahead. The warehouse was like a maze, filled floor to ceiling with massive shipping boxes. This is what they expected it to look like when they had originally come to arrest Vacher. Clorinde pressed an ear to a box, no sound inside. Chevreuse confirmed no heat signature found through the boxes but seemed to be someone in the middle. As they worked through the maze of boxes, they heard a song playing. A sad ballad played on the violin was heard nearby. Chevreuse confirmed the heat signature was laying down, not moving. They approached, slowly. As they exited the maze of boxes, nothing could have prepared them for the sight. A large cement block perched in the center of the warehouse, almost in a ritualistic altar fashion. Papers and photos littered the floor and boxes forming a wall around the center. On the concrete slab in the center lay a person, unmoving and skin so pale it bordered translucent. Chevreuse approached slowly and pressed 2 fingers against her neck.“No pulse, still warm.” She reported.Wriothesley leaned down and picked up a photo from the floor. He had to stifle the gasp that almost escaped him. It was a photo of him walking Sigewinne to school. It looked relatively recent too. Upon further observation, all the photos were of… them. Team Cerberus. Their family. Even their friends. Intimate moments, family time, on the clock duties all photographed and printed before them.“Captain.” Clorinde called. “You need to see this.”Wriothesley snapped out of it and approached the body laying in the center of the room. They appeared to be female but the face was covered by a mask that appeared to be crying. She wore a long black dress that was far too familiar to them all.Chevreuse took a picture of the scene before nodding to Wriothesley. The mask needed to come off. If this was who they thought it was representing, it changed the whole case. If this victim represented who it was appearing to without the mask, the family was in a lot more danger than the originally anticipated. It wouldn't be just fear tactics soon if it was true. Wriothesley already had an inkling it wouldn't just be mental warfare for long anyhow.Pulling a glove from his coat, he carefully lifted the mask and slid it to the side. All four of them swallowed their gut wrenching reaction as it moved away. There, sitting in the center of this warehouse, was a woman holding a photo no one had seen before. No note. Only a single photo. Special, framed and held tightly in her fingers like it was for a funeral.A woman with a long black dress, short black and gray hair, different colored eyes and a gunshot through her forehead. Holding a photo of a sleeping Marina in a rocking chair holding a baby Sigewinne wrapped in a blanket. The next victim, with no missing person reports, represented Marina… the Queen of the Doctor’s network.
----- CHAPTER BREAK -----
The crime scene investigation teams filed into the clearing warehouse. The final count was 300 boxes. Most filled with blank pieces of paper as they ripped apart the warehouse. The victim’s fingerprints were taken and rushed to the lab for identification. There was no missing person report, they had no idea who this person was before them. All they knew was she looked just like Marina. They didn't even know if they were Fontainian. There were no traps. No gags. Just… a discovery. It felt like an elaborate stage performance. Box by box, the warehouse was emptied. Crime scene investigation took thousands of photos, collected over 200 pieces of evidence before the body was moved to the morgue. Emilie would do an autopsy the next day. Not even the murder weapon was found. The fact this victim was far from what they expected threw the entire investigation off track. No one expected Marina to be replicated. The next logical copy would have been Neuvillette or even members of the Sumeru crew who assisted with the original operation. After all, they were working off the theory that this was within the Doctor’s network. Would someone within the network really do something so horrendous to their Queen? How did they get such a photo of Marina? They would have to speak to Dehya or Candace when they had the chance.Team Cerberus left the warehouse to return to the office. They had a meeting with Alhaitham coming up that evening to see what he remembered about the notes. While they went to the warehouse, Letelle’s team turned the archives upside down looking for the missing evidence in the Doctor’s case files. Wriothesley and the team felt like they were missing multiple boxes. After all… who had made the arrests while they were in Sumeru? Even the Chief couldn't remember. Four years and a countless number of cases caused memories to blur within the police force.“The notes I read in the hospital after the case?” Alhaitham recapped over the video chat. “I had an entire bag full of journals and papers. Topics ranged. What specifically were you looking at?”“Anything you remember.” Cyno said.“Some involved chemical breakdowns of drug formulas he was working on. Tighnari was the one who ended up figuring out those compounds and breaking down the euthanasia drug compound. Some notes were about his business transactions. Some were simply diary entries. All equally disturbing.” Alhaitham explained.“Was there anything about the drug rings?” Clorinde asked.“Some bits and pieces of it within the business logs. All of those were archived before we even set foot back in Sumeru. I remember an officer asking the Chief about logging them among the others. I left them with that officer as directed.” Alhaitham reported.“Do you remember the officer’s name, badge number or appearance?” Wriothesley asked.“No unfortunately it was too long ago. I remember information better than people I'm afraid. But it was a uniformed officer, I think he was trying for a promotion within the special forces so he was working hard.” Alhaitham shrugged. “Ask Nari if he remembers anything about the chemical compounds. I will ask Kaveh if he remembers anything. They should be returning to Sumeru city tomorrow afternoon. They found some flash drives in the old lab. Nothing at the dummy lab I'm afraid. No notebooks either. He did a good job covering all his tracks.”“Let us know when they return safely.” Chevreuse said before ending the call. They were back at square one. This case was frustrating. They felt like rats trapped in a maze being experimented on. They had no idea where the exit was or their prize. But they felt like they were being hunted and often felt trapped. They all took the next day off, per the Chief’s order. They needed to feel human, even if it was a little bit of time. Navia and Neuvillette took the day off as well. Sigewinne was more than thrilled to have her two fathers walk her to school for the first time in a very long time. The family spent the day playing board games with their friends from abroad and talking theories in small increments. Stepping back from the case could often give them a new point of view. When they picked Sigewinne up from school, she insisted they have a baking and movie night. Navia was more than on board.By 9pm, Sigewinne was fast asleep, tucked between Wriothesley and Clorinde. Her arms were holding tight onto Wriothesley’s arm, using him as a sort of pillow. When he was able to softly withdraw himself, Clorinde took their sleeping daughter upstairs to tuck into bed. Navia and Neuvillette sat at the other end of the couch. His eyes were closed, resting against Navia’s shoulder as he lazily rubbed over her baby bump.It was soft… mundane. A moment that settled the insanity of their case. Where they felt normal… like a family. Not like they had some of the most demanding and stressful careers they could have ever imagined. It was a fleeting moment fueled by their love for each other. Wriothesley was sitting at his desk going through some of the background checks that had come back. Chevreuse was across the park at the courthouse with Neuvillette, testifying in the case against nobleman Raphael and Pierre. Clorinde was reading through some of their previous arrests looking for connections. Cyno was down the hall in a conference room speaking to his officers in Sumeru for updates.Tighnari tapped on the office door before peeking in. When Clorinde waved him in, he entered. He handed a large stack of paper to Wriothesley. He sat on the chair nearby, his tail wagging in interest.“Sorry it took me a while.” Tighnari smiled. “Collei sent me all my notes from the Doctor’s case. This is all the notes I made about compounds and the breakdown of Marina’s euthanasia drug. I did find some that could be considered a street drug but I think they are incomplete. I think the Doctor kept things secret.”“I appreciate you getting this to us.” Wriothesley said. “I’ll take it down to Emilie when we go down to get the preliminary report. See what she can make out of these partials. Maybe one is similar to the Sinthe she's been finding.”“Of course, I hope it helps.” Tighnari looked at the bulletin board. “Any updates on who the victim is or anything?”“We are waiting on Emilie to call us down for a preliminary autopsy report. As far as identification, finger prints, dental records and DNA are already being searched. Hopefully we get a result soon.” Clorinde reported.“If there's anything else I can bring you, let me know.” Tighnari stood up. “I'm going to go check on Cyno before returning to the courthouse to wait for Neuvillette to be done.”Tighnari exited the office as the Chief entered. “Hey, I know Chevreuse is next door testifying, but Emilie has some reports she needs to give you now. Heads up, she's still gowned up. Everything is still set up.”Clorinde and Wriothesley followed the Chief’s instructions and headed downstairs to the morgue. They passed through Emilie’s office into the autopsy room. Wriothesley’s nose wrinkled at the smell, something he’d never gotten used to even after all these years.“Thank goodness.” Emilie sighed. “I've been waiting for you both to arrive. Sorry to call you at such short notice, you need to know information on this Jane Doe.”“Of course, what's going on Doctor?” Clorinde asked.“Well I'm not fully done with the autopsy yet.” Emilie gestured to her gown, face mask and gloves. “But this victim is different. This is the victim you should be paying attention to.”“Give us the low-down.” Wriothesley said, crossing his arms and giving her his full attention.“Cause of death was gunshot to the back of the head.” Emilie began. “Close range, execution style. Same as the others, hair dyed and cut postmortem. However this is new. She has colored contacts in. Her eye color is naturally pink. She appears to have albinism.”“The eyes were always how we matched the victims. Does she not represent Marina?” Clorinde pondered aloud.“I'm still searching for her identity so once we know who she is, we can answer that question.” Emilie closed her eyes. “She… suffered. My best guess is the killer had her for days prior to her death. Malnourished… dehydrated… likely kept alive simply to toy with. Her organs were relatively healthy so she was likely fit and athletic prior to her capture.” Her eyes locked onto the body on the table. “Jane Doe here was likely a trial run for most of the causes of death. Signs of electrocution. Signs of smoke inhalation. Signs of strangulation. I'm waiting for toxicology to come back but there are likely drugs in her system.”“You're holding something back, Emilie.” Wriothesley raised a brow. “It's okay. I know she looks like Marina. Just tell me what you found.”“It's not that I'm being sensitive to you per say, captain Wriothesley.” Emilie sighed. “It's more of… sympathy. And more for the victim.”“Ah you saw the video didn't you?” Wriothesley groaned as she nodded.“Know that I don't see you differently. I've seen my fair share of torment. But even the strongest men have fragile parts.” Emilie shrugged. “But since you should know and shouldn’t wait for my formal report. There is some… other DNA evidence. She was sexually assaulted repeatedly. And there was quite a bit of DNA left behind so I am running that now. Also managed to pull a fingerprint from her inner thigh.”“Are you running it or has it been sent out?” Clorinde asked.“I'm running it myself. Should have it fully read by the end of the week.” Emilie reported.“Sorry to do this Doc but I need it faster.” Wriothesley smiled at her sheepishly. “After she's identified of course.”“Yeah, yeah…” Emilie waved him off. “I’ll get a coffee after I scrub out and pull an all nighter or two. I’ll have her identified by the end of the day.”“You're the best Doctor.” Clorinde thanked. Sure enough by the end of the day, Emilie had the newest victim identified. She was a trainee at the police academy, her finger prints being on record as part of the orientation. However, her identification chart seemed to be partially deleted. Only a name, her prints and emergency contacts remained. Chevreuse saw no signs of corruption in her file… could it have been sloppy admin work? Or did the police academy face the same hacker as they had?Vivian. A trainee who was lost in the system. How did no one report her missing? How did no one notice the absence of a prosperous future police officer? They did daily attendance checks in the academy, unless they were in between their semester.Letelle set off to let her next of kin know of her death. Hopefully they agreed to come in for an interview the following day. Chief called the general at the police academy to get information pulled on what Vivian was like. Team Cerberus would bring justice to this officer who was taken too soon. The next morning, Wriothesley was staring at the board with the Doctor’s network rebuilt across it. He was patiently waiting for the victims parents to arrive for him to interview. He had been standing there a while before Cyno stepped up beside him.“If you think any harder… smoke is going to start pouring out of your ears. What's going on?” He asked.“I feel like we are missing information we shouldn't be missing. I can't figure out where the hole in this layout is. It had to be when we were in Sumeru but we were so frantic at that point in time and I was injured. I hardly remember it.” Wriothesley sighed.“I may have a solution to that.” Cyno said. “I asked Candace to search through my files in Sumeru. She should be reaching out shortly.”“You kept duplicates?” Clorinde asked.“I did, however everything is on paper. I rarely have the time or manpower to do all the fancy archiving you do.” Cyno sighed. “So she's been going through everything I have through the night while Alhaitham and Kaveh figure out that flash drive they found.”“I seriously don't know what we’d do without you.” Chevreuse remarked.10 minutes later, Dehya entered the office on a video call from Candace. “Yo boss.” She greeted. “Candace has some good news.”“Hello everyone.” She waved sleepily on the other end of the video call. “I apologize. It took me longer than expected to find the correct boxes. But indeed here they are.”“How many are there? Are they the drug ring arrests?” Clorinde asked.“Around three and a half boxes of information here. All about the drug rings. These are what Cyno asked me to find.” Candace confirmed.“Who were the arresting officers on the files?” Wriothesley asked.Candace shuffled some papers. “Badge number is… 562? Does that mean anything?”“Chev, look up every badge that looked up the Doctor’s file in our system over the past year.” Wriothesley requested. She instantly went to her computer to compile the information. “Candance, is that the number on all of the arrests?”Candace looked through a few more papers and nodded. “Yes, all have the same number but no name. Is that normal?”“Yes, that's how we process everything internally. We only add our names to public records really.” Clorinde confirmed. “Wriothesley you know the number don't you?”“Yeah… yeah I do. I need Chev to confirm my theory though.” Wriothesley’s jaw tensed. He knew. He knew that badge number well. It was on multiple reports against him in the past. It was a number that only got upgraded over time.“Holy fuck.” Chevreuse ran a hand down her face. “Guys this is bad. Our files were edited and likely that's where all our missing reports are. How the hell did I miss this before? Was it during the cyber attack?”“Badges Chevreuse.” Wriothesley demanded.“Badge 1062, badge 962, badge 862 and badge 362. How the hell did a uniform get into the special forces database? They're not cleared.” Chevreuse stated.“Do these numbers mean something?” Cyno raised a brow.“Yes, badges starting in 10 are captains. 9 is their second in command or right hand, 8 is their third or left hand. The lower the number, more entry level. Team members in the special forces match their captain's identification, but their first number represents their position. Second number always represents their captain.” Clorinde explained.“Candace, thank you for your help.” Wriothesley said. His teeth gritted a bit. “Without you, we wouldn't have found the killer this fast.”“Wait, you know who it is?” Dehya asked.“Yep… time to go confirm my theory.” Wriothesley’s eyes narrowed. He left his office with Chevreuse and Clorinde in tow. They went into the homicide special forces office and found Letelle, encouraging him to follow. They went down the hall to a labelless office, once home to the financial crimes unit. The door was locked.“Why are we here?” Letelle asked“Because I know where the evidence we are missing is.” Wriothesley jiggled the door knob roughly.“Hold on, I’ll go grab the master key from Chief to open-,” Letelle was cut off by Wriothesley kicking the door in. “Or… that works…”“You've never seen the captain when he's pissed, have you?” Chevreuse raised a brow at Letelle, who looked like a deer in headlights.Wriothesley stepped into the office that hasn't been used in nearly four months. Dust was collecting on the abandoned desks and computers. It was frozen in time, identical since the day the officers abandoned it. Next to the furthest desk was a large filing cabinet, locked with a padlock. Wriothesley pressed his foot against the bottom of the cabinet and pulled the drawer hard. With his brute strength, weakened by time metal gave. The drawer to the filing cabinet opened with a brief fight. Inside, laid the missing paperwork. The entire drawer was filled with the arrests and evidence from the Doctor’s drug ring. It was all the missing files that should have been in the archives all this time.“The badge numbers.” Clorinde closed her eyes and took a shaky breath. Everything had clicked into place for her. “Do you think all three were involved?”“No.” Wriothesley shook his head. “But this… this confirmed who our killer is. Fuck how did I miss it? Personal vendetta against us. A deep seeded hatred and jealousy. The knowledge of the cases. The hacking skills necessary to pull this off.”“Wriothesley, what is happening?” Letelle demanded.“I know who we are looking for.” Wriothesley put the files back in the drawer. “The Replicator is the former captain of the financial crimes unit of the special forces… It's Ray.”“He can't be doing it alone.” Chevreuse chimed in. “He had the hacking skills, yes but not to do what he did. His right hand, she could. Easily. I knew her in college and she was basically rewriting the text book on computer software building. Plus she knew our system well enough and my signatures. And she's just crazy enough to help Ray with this.”“And being demoted to financial crimes from the child abuse team was a fall from grace for her.” Clorinde added. “Silent partner… like Emilie suggested.”“Shit. He's the rookie cop who harassed you when you first started too, right?” Letelle asked. “I remember he was always in the Chief’s office bitching about you one way or another. Or he would be constantly looking for you when you were working cases.”“Ding Ding Ding. Then I got him put back on a beat because he punched me in the face during an arrest. Then I advocated for his badge to be stripped when he unlawfully arrested a civilian.” Wriothesley sighed.“This can't be because you made him not be a cop. It's gotta be deeper.” Chevreuse said.“Hell if I know. The man hated me since the academy.” Wriothesley shrugged.“Captain, you have to meet with the victim's family in 5 minutes.” Clorinde reminded.“Okay here's the plan. Letelle, can you let the Chief know who we are looking for and ask him to issue a BOLO. Then can you ask Chrissy why she demoted Catalina both officially and unofficially?” Wriothesley asked. The other captain saluted his comrades and went off to handle his mission. “Clorinde, I want you to interview with me. Chev, can you and Cyno monitor us? Then search for whatever happened to his left hand officer? He was fired alongside the rest of them but I need eyes on him too.”They left the abandoned office behind, moving the evidence back into the Cerberus office where they can be gone through thoroughly. Clorinde and Wriothesley briefly discussed a plan for how to interview the grieving parents. Cyno and Chevreuse disappeared into the monitoring room for the interview.Vivian’s parents sat on the couch in the private interviewing room. The box of tissues between them was halfway gone already. Both the father and mother’s eyes were bloodshot from tears and likely lack of sleep. They had lost their only child and it was devastating to them. Ever since Wriothesley and Clorinde became parents, interviews like this have forced them to take a deep breath before entering. To disconnect their own lives from their jobs. To solve the case and yet maintain comfort and sympathy towards those hurting.Clorinde and Wriothesley slowly entered the interview room. The parents stiffened, trying to gain some composure back. Wriothesley and Clorinde sat on the couch across from them, offering sympathetic smiles.“Thank you for coming on such short notice, we are sorry for your loss.” Clorinde began.“I’m captain Wriothesley and this is special forces officer Clorinde. We are the team investigating your daughter's case.” Wriothesley introduced.“Captain Wriothesley?” The mother blinked. “You're the special forces captain of the elite team right? Vivian always spoke of your work.”“That is me.” Wriothesley confirmed. “She was in the police academy, correct? What semester?”“Her final semester. She had told us when she was enrolling that you were doing special courses to induct officers right into the special forces. Vivian wanted to be a captain so badly. It was her lifelong dream.” The father fought back tears.“I do hand select the next members of the police special forces. I… I wish I could have seen her through the trials.” Wriothesley was beginning to struggle to separate his personal and work life in this interview already. Was the victim chosen because she was interested in the special forces?“Can you tell us when the last time you saw Vivian was? Last time you heard from her or where she was going?” Clorinde asked.“Maybe two weeks ago? After the semester ended. She wanted to celebrate passing all her classes and getting the ones she wanted for her final semester. She planned on going on a hiking trip in the mountains to the north.” The mother explained.“She's been camping since she was a little girl. We went at least twice every summer since she could walk. Vivian loved the outdoors… she was so experienced. We didn't think the next thing we’d hear was her being…” The father broke into sobs, his wife holding him close.Clorinde gave them a few moments to gather themselves. “Has anyone new just entered her life? A new boyfriend or classmate or anything?”“No, she never dated. Too dedicated to her career. Friends were… sparse. She kept to herself often, needing time to study or work out or be outdoors.” The mother confirmed.“Is there anything you can remember that would give us insight into who she was?” Wriothesley asked.“She was a reserved girl. Only got loud when it was required. An easy child.” The father dried his eyes. “Vivian had a heart of gold. She would help anyone who ever needed it.”“Even a stranger?” Clorinde asked.“She’d give them the shirt off her back if that's what they needed.” The mother choked up a bit. “That's why she wanted to be a police officer. To help people the best she could.”“She wanted to become a captain of a special forces team. To make the biggest impact. She knew it was a daunting goal, a hefty one with many obstacles but Viv was determined to get there no matter what.” The father said.“Did she have any health conditions?” Clorinde asked.“Yes, albinism. It didn't hinder her really. Some light sensitivities, prone to sunburns, etc. She wore blue contacts most of the time but with the red underneath most people assumed she was just pale with lilac eyes.” The mother explained. There were short two taps on the one way mirror. Chevreuse was trying to pull them out of the interview. Wriothesley and Clorinde thanked the parents for their time and encouraged them to reach out if they remembered anything or needed anything. The officers were ushering the parents out of the interview room when the mother paused.“I almost forgot.” She shuffled through her purse, withdrawing a picture. “I brought this for you to keep.” The mother offered it to Wriothesley.“Thank you ma’am.” Wriothesley smiled and took the picture. “As soon as we have the person who did this to your daughter in custody, we will contact you. Emilie will also be reaching out soon to see where you’d like Vivian sent for her funeral.”“If you need anything, please… reach out. We are here as support as well. There's resources to get you both through this difficult time. And do not worry about expenses… The funeral is paid in full.” Clorinde said. The parents broke down, hugging both the officers tightly as they sobbed. After they saw the parents out, Wriothesley actually looked at the photo in his hand. The air was stolen from his lungs. Seeing her for the first time, what she looked like, the pieces fit into place better. The young girl indeed had lilac eyes with her contacts in. She was pale, slender and tall. She had long white hair with soft blue streaks through it. If Wriothesley didn't know better, this was Neuvillette’s sister.“Clorinde.” Wriothesley’s tone was tense. “Where is Neuvillette right now?”“Should be in court.” She raised a brow. He handed her the photo. “Oh… oh fuck.”Wriothesley bolted to the monitoring room. Before Chevreuse could even talk, he showed them both the photo. “Marina wasn't the intended here. Its Neuvillette. It was all to throw us off.”“The trial should be ending today.” Chevreuse jumped up. “Come on, let's get to the office then over to the court.”They rushed to the team Cerberus office to place Chevreuse’s tablet and the photo. To their surprise, Tighnari was waiting in the office. He seemed upset, his tail swaying side to side and ears flattened. He was supposed to be with Neuvillette at the courthouse.“Nari? What's wrong?” Cyno asked.“Well, court was wrapping up and I was waiting outside the room for Neuvillette. An officer approached me and told me I needed to leave immediately. When I told him I was a diplomatic guest and had authorization to be there, he told me to get out before it got physical. Well I refused and he grabbed me by my ear. I left after that.” Tighnari explained.“Oh, Nari, are you okay?” Cyno asked softly as he inspected his partner.“Yeah… it just hurt. You know how sensitive they are.” He said softly.“Did you happen to catch a badge on them?” Wriothesley asked.“Yeah… 352.” Tighnari huffed.“You two got your guns?” Wriothesley looked at Chevreuse and Clorinde. Both nodded, confirming their service pistols were on their persons.Cyno quickly explained the situation to Tighnari as the others bolted towards the exit through the district attorney’s office. Between the police station annex and the court house was a small park. A lot of people used it to take their lunch breaks, have a moment of clarity before or after a trial and to meet up with old colleagues. A relatively straight shot across the footpath was the courthouse.Wriothesley burst through the doors out into the park. Within a few yards into the footpath was a large fountain surrounded by benches. Beyond the fountain was the courthouse, covered by trees on the opposite sides. The captain paused near the fountain, thinking he heard a rustle of leaves nearby. To his left, he barely saw a hand on the ground near a thick grouping of trees. He knew that ring from anywhere.“NEUVILLETTE!!!” Wriothesley screamed. He pictured the worst, his dead husband behind that tree. His legs carried him faster than they ever had before. His knees were buried in the ground as he landed beside his husband.Neuvillette opened his eyes slowly when he felt Wriothesley beside him. He offered a weak smile. “Darling… am I dreaming?” He murmured. His words were slightly slurred.“Fuck, thank the archons Neuvillette you’re alive!” Wriothesley had tears sliding down his cheeks. He examined the fallen man briefly as he ripped the jacket off his harness to tuck under Neuvillette’s head. “Baby what happened?”“Pulled out here when court adjourned.” He closed his eyes but took Wriothesley’s hand giving a weak squeeze.“Take your time baby.” Wriothesley encouraged. Clorinde and Chevreuse had cleared the area, making sure it was safe. “Rinde, call for an ambulance now. Give my badge number, our team, anything to get them here faster. Chev, call Chief.”The girls set off on their tasks as Cyno and Tighnari joined them. Tighnari pulled his backpack off of him and pulled a first aid kit out. He got to work bandaging up the gash on Neuvillette’s forehead, which would likely need stitches and definitely caused a concussion.“Wrio, it's Ray.” Neuvillette confirmed. “Behind a mask… but I knew that voice. The mask… it looked like the Doctors.”“I know it is. We already have a BOLO out on him. I’ll catch him, and by gods he is going to pay for what he's done.” Wriothesley practically growled.Neuvillette’s suit was in ruins. His jacket was discarded and thrown at the roots of a different nearby tree. Buttons were ripped off his shirt. A large laceration down his side that Tighnari would focus on next. Neuvillette’s knuckles were bloodied from fighting back. A nail had been ripped off his left hand, likely lost in the tussle. The button on his trousers was lying nearby. It connected what Neuvillette truly had fended off.“He didn't… he tried…” Neuvillette murmured. “I got a good punch or two in… should have DNA under my nails.”“That's good Neuvi, you did so good, I'm so proud of you.” Wriothesley whispered to his husband. He pressed a soft kiss to his uninjured temple. Sirens were approaching in the distance. “But we need to get you to a doctor and make sure you're going to be ok. You're probably going to need a few stitches baby. You definitely have a concussion.”“Come with?” Neuvillette asked with blurry eyes.“Nothing in this world would stop me from coming with you.” Wriothesley promised. “Then Clorinde will be right behind us.”“Navi…?” He asked.“We’ll see her at home baby. She's gonna go get Sigewinne with Dehya.” He looked at Clorinde, giving her a nod to communicate with Navia on what's happening and what needs to be done. “They’ll make sure the house is quiet and comfortable for you, promise sweetness.”The ambulance arrived, Chevreuse guiding them from the park's edge to where Neuvillette was. He was loaded into a stretcher after Tighnari swabbed under his nails. He and Cyno would take that to Emilie before they went to the hospital to rejoin them. Wriothesley joined them in the ambulance, Chevreuse and Clorinde following close behind. Wriothesley waited patiently for the doctors to come get him from the waiting room. They had to run tests before they could begin treating him for his injuries. Clorinde stuck close to Wriothesley. The anxiety was basically seeping out of his pores. The lobby was quiet. Chevreuse pulled them both close to talk.“Well before all this happened.” Chevreuse sighed. “I pulled you guys out of the interview to tell you I found Ray’s previous left hand officer. And he's doing 10 years in jail. You’ll never guess the charge or arresting officer.”“Drug charges?” Clorinde asked.“Possession and distribution on a large scale. Sinthe.” Chevreuse confirmed. “Arresting officer was the Chief of police.”“The Chief hasn't made an arrest in over 10 years.” Wriothesley scoffed. “How did anyone even process paperwork like that?”“Because the original arresting officer was a uniformed officer. But a certain hacker changed it when our system was hacked.” Chevreuse sighed. “I'm going to have to fix so much paperwork when this is done. Thankfully I’ll have more than enough time while you two are on leave in a few months.”“Yeah we’ll have just enough time to get all the evidence processed for this case and trial before we all go on leave.” Clorinde said. “Unless something gets delayed or Carole wants to arrive earlier than expected.”“We’ll catch him within the next day or two.” Wriothesley said confidently. “He's at his end game. We’re so close, he's afraid. Especially now that we know it's Ray. I've always been able to read the bastard like a book. But I have a feeling he has a few more tricks up his sleeve.”“Probably part of the reason he hates you.” Chevreuse teased. “So when did you two meet? The academy? That's the earliest memory I have of him.”“Yeah, the academy. I have no idea where he went to college. But when we met in the academy, he kinda treated it like a jail yard. Challenge the biggest man to a fight to establish dominance and he happened to choose me. I laid him flat on the ground without even batting an eye. I'm assuming that's when the grudge began but only he can say for sure. It's hard to reason with a crazy murderer.” Wriothesley shrugged.Soon, Cyno and Tighnari arrived. They had handed off the evidence to Emilie for her to process. The DNA sample would be incredibly helpful when prosecuting the case later on. The medical staff had already documented the injuries Neuvillette had sustained. When the case went to trial, it was going to be a short one. The evidence was beyond damning. The doctors called the small group back once Neuvillette’s testing was done an hour later. Wriothesley instantly rushed to Neuvillette who was more coherent than before. He had some of the blood cleaned up from his wounds. He was waiting for the numbing medication to be in full effect to receive his stitches. The medical staff left them alone to discuss the events prior.“I'm sorry they wouldn't let us back until now, baby.” Wriothesley practically whispered. He brushed a long strain of white hair out of Neuvillette’s face. “How are you? Not in pain right?”“No, they gave me pain medication.” Neuvillette said weakly. “The doctors said I should be alright to leave after I receive some stitches. Nothing is broken and the concussion is mild. Just a few stitches needed in my side and my temple. I will be fine in a few days with some rest.”“Oh baby…” Wriothesley took his hand and kissed it softly. “We’ll take you home after this and make sure you're safe tonight.”“Neuvi,” Clorinde took his other hand. “Can you tell us what you remember?”“When court was adjourned I left the courtroom. I didn’t see Tighnari at all. A masked officer grabbed my arm and pulled me outside. When he spoke I realized who it was.” Neuvillette explained. He rested his head on Wriothesley’s shoulder. “He forced me out of sight in the trees. It appears he's been bulking up. He's stronger than I remember him being when he was part of the police force. But…”“It's okay, sweetness. We’re here now. Take your time.” Wriothesley encouraged.A few moments later, Neuvillette continued. “He told me to take my clothes off. I obviously told him to leave me be. He tried to pull my suit off of me. I fought back as hard as I could. I eventually got pinned to the ground and got caught on something sharp.” He gestured to his side wound. “Before he could manage to do anything, someone sat down at a nearby bench talking. I’m… unsure who but they truly saved my life. He punched me in the head and ran off. I think I lost consciousness for a few moments. Next thing I knew I heard you nearby. You know the rest.”“You did well fighting back, Neuvillette.” Cyno complimented.“I got the DNA sample to Emilie as fast as I could. She is rush processing it and will send the results to you as soon as she can.” Tighnari confirmed. “And I'll stay with Neuvillette while he heals. I'm sorry I left to begin with, Neuvillette. He had forced me out as well. I should have fought harder.”“That would be wonderful, to have you by my side. And please Tighnari, do not blame yourself. You had no idea what was happening and are a victim in this as well.” Neuvillette smiled softly.“Captain, the Chief just arrived in the lobby with Her Justice.” Chevreuse said, reading a text message on her phone. “They would like to see us briefly before coming back.”“Is it okay if they come back, Neuvi?” Wriothesley asked. “If you don't want them to, I will send them off.”“No it's alright. Her Justice is likely worried about me. We were supposed to have a meeting after the trial ended but I obviously didn't make it.” Neuvillette sighed.Team Cerberus left the hospital room to greet their leaders in the lobby. Alone in the hospital room was Neuvillette, Cyno and Tighnari. Neuvillette did his best to relax, the medicine helping him along the way. Tighnari doted on him, checking him over and assuring the doctors were taking his treatment seriously. While the others were away, a nurse knocked on the door before entering. She didn't introduce herself. Didn’t greet anyone. Just… came in and roughly grabbed Neuvillette’s arm with his IV port.“Ma’am.” Cyno spoke up. “He's already received medication. What are you trying to give him?”“Doctors orders.” The nurse said harshly. Inside the vial was a thick green liquid, a medication Tighnari recognized immediately. Before the nurse could try again, Tighnari was between her and Neuvillette. He had roughly shoved her against the wall and gripped her wrist so tight the needle filled with the mysterious medication fell and shattered on the floor.“Nari what are you doing?!” Cyno exasperated.“That medication is the euthanasia drug Marina created.” Tighnari growled. His tail was bushy and tense, his ears pinned as he growled. “She's trying to kill Neuvillette.”Neuvillette instinctually pulled his arm close to protect himself, wide eyed at what was happening. The commotion was heard by the others as they arrived back in the room.“Tighnari, what are you-” Chevreuse was cut off.“Catalina?” Wriothesley’s eyes narrowed. “Clorinde, cuff her immediately. Catalina, you are under arrest. A uniformed officer will read you your rights on the way to the station.”“This is the missing right hand?” Cyno asked. “How did she end up here? As a nurse of all things?”“Ray was too soft to finish the job.” She spat. She tried to wrestle away from Tighnari but the man stood strong. Clorinde approached and took over, putting cuffs tight around her wrist.“Clorinde, take her to the uniform officer waiting outside. Tell them to put her in our interrogation room. I’ll handle her once I make sure Neuvillette is alright.” Wriothesley instructed. When the room finally settled, the attention returned to Neuvillette. He greeted the new members and explained what had happened to him. He was slightly shaken at the new events.“Oh, Neuvillette.” Evangeline looked at him with soft eyes. “I knew something was off when you didn’t come back after the trial. I had already contacted the Chief when he got the call from Chevreuse.”“I'm sorry for worrying you, Her Justice.” He offered a gentle smile. “I’ll be alright. Superficial damage.”“You need to focus on you. Take some time off.” She said firmly. “I need a doctor's clearance before you return.”“Ah well, not too fond of being here as of now.” Neuvillette partially joked.“You are numbed already, correct?” Tighnari asked. Neuvillette nodded in confirmation. “I can stitch you up if you'd rather.”“That would be ideal.” Neuvillette admitted.“I’ll go get a suture kit from someone.” The Chief grunted before stepping out of the room. Tighnari took over Neuvillette’s care under the watchful eye of the Chief and Her Justice. Team Cerberus took their leave, Cyno opting to stay behind in case Tighnari or Neuvillette needed him. Once Wriothesley was away from the others, his mask dropped. He was furious. First, his husband is assaulted and damn near raped. Next, he's almost drugged and killed. Tormenting him was one thing, tormenting his husband was another. And that crossed a line for him. Ray would pay for what he did.The team arrived back at the police station as the sun set. The sky was a dusty pink and orange as dark crept forward, swallowing the light. Wriothesley told Chevreuse and Clorinde to monitor… he was going in solo to interview. There was no deal on the table. She had fully admitted what she had done and her intentions. Now, he just wanted to know where Ray was.“I didn't expect to see you on the business end of a needle near my husband today.” Wriothesley said nonchalantly as he entered the interrogation room. “Nor was I pleased about it.”“Since when do I give a fuck about your opinion?” Catalina raised a brow, leaning back in her chair.“Since I am now the one who holds your life.” Wriothesley sat down across from her. “Cause right now, I have you on charges of cyber terrorism, child pornography and attempted murder. Oh, and you know… the five counts of third degree murder. Either way, I have full justification to either let you rot in a cell until you die or let you hang until your neck snaps with the death penalty.”“Oh please.” Catalina rolled her eyes. “You're too soft. Being an ex-convict yourself, you don't charge that high.”“For you and Ray, I'm more than willing to make an exception. There is no redemption for you. There is no help. What you did was unforgivable to every degree. And if i'm honest… I'd rather not have to worry about you and Ray another day of my life.” Wriothesley’s eyes narrowed. “And the Duke gets what the Duke wants.”“I don't think you have the balls.” Catalina taunted. “You didn't even fight Ray back. You never confronted him. Honestly I think you're all bark and no bite.”“Mhm, yeah, sure think whatever you'd like.” Wriothesley shrugged. “You should be more worried about yourself right now. Or is it you're worried about Ray?”“Why would I worry about him? He's a big boy.” She scoffed.“Because you're tired of cleaning up his messes. The hacking? All you… yet I'm sure he will take the credit for you. Didn’t he do that multiple times on your team? Ya know… before I had his ass demoted to a lousy beat cop writing tickets.” Wriothesley smirked.“He didn't deserve that!” She snapped.“So… what's your twos deal? Lovers? Besties? Oh archons please don't tell me siblings.” Wriothesley asked.“Mind your business.” She sneered.“This is my business now.” Wriothesley glared. “Especially because I am very unforgiving to those who hurt my partners. Especially to those who attempt to kill my husband.”“You wouldn't know a hard life if it bit you in the ass. Oh wait… I think there's a video on that.” Catalina snickered.A fist landed on the table, denting the metal deeply. It made Catalina squeak in surprise. “I have had more than my fair share of torment. My own fair share of blood and pain. My own battles, and I won each one of them. Now.” He grabbed her hand cuffs and pulled her close to his face. “I'd suggest you tell me where Ray is or this is going to get ugly. You know as an ex member of the special forces this interrogation room is special for a reason.”“You wouldn't.” Catalina’s eyes widened.“I would. Without a second thought. There are no cameras here for a reason.” Wriothesley grinned. “Now talk.”“You know…” Catalina sighed. “You two have a lot in common.”“Like what?” His eyes narrowed.“Your love for the color red for one.” She grinned.Wriothesley paused. His eyes widened. He understood exactly what she was conveying to him. He dropped the cuffs and bolted out of the interrogation room, instructing a guard to get her to a maximum security cell to await trial. He pulled Clorinde and Chevreuse back to the Cerberus office.“Chev, I need you to log into your dark web browsers and go to my parents' snuff room.” Wriothesley instructed.“Uh… sure capt’.” Chevreuse looked confused before heading to her computer.“What's your thought, Wriothesley?” Clorinde asked.“Our favorite color is red. Well… not a true statement on either account. But my parents torture room was painted red. The video leaked. Call it a gut feeling.” Wriothesley tried to explain. He scratched the back of his hand as he waited for Chevreuse to pull up the website feed.Soon, he was looking at a way too familiar page. A page that used to house incredibly horrific videos of him and his sister. A site once washed away from the internet but was now in full swing. Every video that their parents ever posted was back, featuring a new one.“This… isn't possible.” Chevreuse’s voice quivered. “Those videos should be gone. Catalina is in custody. How is he doing this?”“They set it up before the assault happened. Click the new video.” Wriothesley said. Chevreuse did as she was told.A new video appeared on the screen, a wide shot of Wriothesley’s childhood home’s secret basement room. Still filled with torturous devices, a sharp scraping of metal against metal was heard nearby. 15 seconds in, Ray sat down in front of the camera with a heavy huff. He looked different than he had the last time they all saw him. His hair was long and shaggy. His beard was long and unkept. He looked like a wild man living in the wilderness more than a former police captain. Blood spatter appeared on his jeans. He wiped sweat from his brow line.“Hey there, Captain Wriothesley.” The man grinned. “I’m guessing by now you found the remains of your husband. I didn't get very far with him… unfortunately you solved my puzzle a little faster than I expected. No matter…” Ray let out a dramatic sigh. “None of them is what I want. I have a certain want that needs to be saturated but I simply cannot find the substance to do so. Sinthe didn't do it. Killing didn't satisfy me. I thought maybe banging that pretty husband of yours would be but he's pretty feisty. Truly a underappreciated quality.”“If you're seeing this, I'm assuming Catalina has been captured as well. Smart girl… gifted beyond the archons wildest dreams. But stubborn, arrogant… her own narcissism got her caught. I however, am not going down that easy.” Ray laughed.“You have 5 hours from when you view this video. Oh don’t worry… I'm watching closely. I have eyes and ears EVERYWHERE. I know your every move. Within 5 hours I want you here captain Wriothesley. I don't care if you come alone or armed to the nines. It doesn't matter. Because I simply want you. Your life to be exactly.” Ray disappeared from camera view. He returned a moment later, carrying a young child with him. They were bound and gagged, tears staining their face.“I will not touch him until 5 hours from now. If you're late, I begin to show the boy what your mother did to you. But if you do arrive in time it's simple.” Ray got close to the camera. “Captain Wriothesley in place of the boy. I can't wait to see you, my dear Duke.”Manic laughter was echoing as the camera went dark. The team was silent for a short while. It was Wriothesley who broke the silence.“If I'm what he wants, he can have me.” Wriothesley sighed. “Little does he know… I know how to outsmart him.”“Do you have a plan?” Clorinde raised a brow.“More than a plan. C’mon… let's head to the main conference room. I’ll explain everything. We have less than an hour and a half before we need to leave. This time, we’re going to show him why I'm the second in command to the Chief of police.”
